  • A New ‘Jackass’ Movie Is Coming This Summer

    Jackass is back.

    The surprise announcement was made by the group’s onscreen leader (and off-screen co-creator) Johnny Knoxville, who posted an image of the group’s logo, along with the date June 26, and a caption confirming a new film is coming this summer.

    “Well a wang dang and hot damn doodle, we are starting the year off with a bang,” Knoxville wrote. “We wanted to let you know that this summer Jackass is back!! We will see you in theatres June 26th. More to come but wanted you to hear it from us first!!”

    The previous Jackass movie, Jackass Forever was released in early 2022. Before that it had been a dozen years since a Jackass movie, 2010’s Jackass 3D. But the most recent movie got some of the best reviews of the group’s now 25+ year career doing masochistic stunts and pranks, and grossed $80 million in theaters at a time when people were really just starting to come back to movie theaters after the pandemic.

    The fourth film marked the first in the series without stars Ryan Dunn (who passed away in 2011) and Bam Margera (who was fired during production). It also was the first to add new members to the group, including Rachel Wolfson, Zach Holmes, and Sean “Poopies” McInerney. It remains to be seen if all of the troupe’s additions will be back for this film.

    Jackass debuted as a television series on MTV in October of 2000. Following several seasons of big ratings, the concept was transferred to theaters, starting with Jackass: The Movie in 2002. Between the four main films plus the spinoff Bad Grandpa (starring Knoxville disguised in old man makeup), Jackass has grossed more than $570 million worldwide to date.

    Jackass 5 (or whatever it winds up getting called officially) premieres in theaters on June 26.

  • MCU Fans Worried Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Will Die After DC Casting

    Some MCU fans are convinced that Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes won’t be making it out of Avengers: Doomsday alive.

    Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the movie will be released in United States theaters later this year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is scheduled for 2027.

    Why do MCU fans think Sebastian Stan’s Bucky will die in Avengers: Doomsday?

    It has been confirmed that Stan will reprise his MCU role as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in Avengers: Doomsday, though whether or not he’s also part of the cast for Avengers: Secret Wars remains to be seen.

    In light of the news that Stan is now in talks to play a character in Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2, also known as The Batman Part II, many Marvel fans are now convinced this means Bucky will die in Doomsday.

    The logic behind this reasoning seems to be that Avengers: Secret Wars and The Batman 2 will be filming at the same time. While this very well may be true, it’s still entirely possible that Stan could appear in both films. Avengers: Doomsday, in comparison, began filming at the end of April 2024, and production lasted all the way to mid-September. The entire ensemble cast was not on set during that whole time, meaning Stan could theoretically do both projects.

    For now, MCU fans will have to wait until December 18, 2026, to see who survives Doomsday and who doesn’t. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027.

    As for The Batman 2, that movie — which is part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga — is scheduled to be released between Doomsday and Secret Wars on October 1, 2027. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne, while Scarlett Johansson has also been cast in the film.

  • The Official X-Men ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Teaser Debuts Online

    At this point, we’ve got the pattern. Each week, a new Avengers: Doomsday teaser has debuted in theaters in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash. For a couple of days, you can only see it in the theater (or on social media in extremely grainy bootleg copies). Then it comes to the internet in full HD. Wash rinse repeat.

    The first teaser revealed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers would be back in Avengers: Doomsday, despite his supposed retirement in Avengers: Endgame. The second featured Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who we already knew was one of the main Avengers returning for this fifth Avengers movie.

    The third teaser is the most intriguing so far, as it features the returns of Fox X-Men stars Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops — who is seen wearing the character’s classic ’90s Jim Lee-designed costume for the very first time.

    In case you missed them, here are the two previous Avengers: Doomsday teasers.

    Although not shown in the first teaser, the returning X-Men cast for Doomsday also includes Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine.

    Additional confirmed stars beyond Evans, Hemsworth, and the cast of the X-Men franchise include Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, the combined casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Robert Downey Jr. as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Doom. Based on the size of the list alone, I have to assume this film is 14 hours long.

    Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026.

  • James Gunn’s Unique Take on Supergirl Compared to Guardians

    Supergirl is similar to Guardians of the Galaxy because it does not “religiously” follow its source material, DC head James Gunn says.

    The upcoming DC Universe blockbuster will be loosely based on author Tom King’s 2022 comic run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Gunn has now explained the movie will be like his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, as Supergirl will retain the “core” of King’s original story, while also venturing into new territory.

    Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, the 59-year-old filmmaker said: “I think it’s a space fantasy, which is like Guardians in a way, but it’s based on the Tom King book, but it doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there.”

    He added: “We’re not adapting Woman of Tomorrow religiously. We’re taking elements of it […] The tone and the general approach and the structure are inspired by it, but we are not telling that story.”

    The Superman director noted he was “really excited” for people to see Supergirl and Milly Alcock as the titular Kryptonian heroine.

    He added: “It’s going to be awesome”.

    The first trailer for Supergirl introduced a bruised, world-weary Kara Zor-El (Alcock) as she drifts through space, haunted by Krypton’s fall and numbing her pain on her 23rd birthday. When she crosses paths with the vengeful Ruthye (Eve Ridley), flashes of lost worlds, brutal fights, and a tease of Lobo (Jason Momoa) set up a cosmic revenge story that promises a harder, sharper edge to the DCU.

    The upcoming movie, which lands in cinemas in June 2026, also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Emily Beecham as Alura and David Krumholtz as Zor-El.

    The official synopsis for Supergirl reads: “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

    Supergirl director Craig Gillespie previously teased the film was “really an anti-hero story.”

    Speaking with media after debuting the first trailer for Supergirl, Gillespie said: “This is really an anti-hero story.

    “She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”

    Gunn added Supergirl was not perfect “at all.”

    The Peacemaker creator said: “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all … Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

    There are only 19 film genres.

    (At least according to Letterboxd.)

    The over 1.13 million movies in the fabulous and fabulously nerdy movie database and social media app can be sorted by genre. Letterboxd recognizes 19 different ones: Action, adventure, animation, comedy, crime, documentary, drama, family, fantasy, history, horror, music, mystery, romance, sci-fi, thriller, TV movie, war, and western.

    Within each genre you sort the titles according to your individual rating, by overall popularity, or by the average rating from all users — which gives you the top-rated film according to Letterboxd in all 19 different genres. Note that it’s also possible to sort multiple genres at once. So if you want to know what’s the top-rated action musical, for example, you can do that. (The answer, by the way, is The Blues Brothers.)

    But I’m getting ahead of myself. Today we’re just going to find out the single best movie (or at least the highest-rated movie) in each of the 19 individual Letterboxd genres. As you’ll see, some movies appear multiple times; one appears three times. That’s because some movies exist within multiple genres — like The Blues Brothers, which is an action movie and a musical. I could have excluded previously mentioned movies in the interest of getting a broader range of titles, but I decided that would just be fudging the truth. Better to give an accurate reflection of the films that Letterboxd users hold most dear in all of their 19 different genres. And here they are…

    Tom Cruise wants to make history by shooting the first movie in outer space — but political turbulence may be keeping him grounded.

    According to insiders, the Mission: Impossible star is facing major delays… because he doesn’t want to ask Donald Trump for help.

    Politics in Orbit?

    “To make this movie, you need NASA coordination,” one source tells #ShuterScoop. “And Tom didn’t want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You need federal government permission.”

    Cruise has famously kept his politics private, even declining a Kennedy Center Honor from Trump in 2019, reportedly to avoid making a statement.

    “He’s never alienated his fan base by getting political — and doesn’t plan to start now,” the insider added.

    Trump Wants In — Literally

    “Tom doesn’t want politics interfering with the project,” the source explained. “But that’s creating tension behind the scenes.”

    Space Delays + Stunt Concerns

    Even with NASA and SpaceX reportedly on board, the movie is stalled — with insurance concerns, production risks, and the danger of filming in space piling up.

    And Cruise’s legendary daredevil energy may not be helping.

    “Tom’s made no concessions to age. He’s in insane shape and pushing himself harder than ever,” a source said. “It’s almost like he’ll kill himself to stay on top.”

    Still a Go?

    NASA has previously expressed public support. In 2020, former administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation.”

  • 10 Remakes That Changed Genres From the Original Film

    The double-edge sword of remakes: The reason you make one is to capitalize on an audience’s familiarity with a beloved property, but you also can’t make something that feels too familiar, or that same audience will think they’ve seen your new movie already and they’ll pass on buying a ticket. As a result, there’s a push and pull going on behind the scenes of every remake, with their creators weighing how close to stay (or how far to stray) from their source material.

    When filmmakers lean toward the latter, you get titles the like ten on the list below — which all qualify as remakes, but are also so different from the movies that inspired them that they technically belong to an entirely different genre than their cinematic predecessors. Some go even further; they’re set in different countries and different time periods. One or two openly mock the movie they are based on. Sometimes they feature people bursting into song just for kicks. (When I burst into song just for kicks I get arrested. When A Star Is Born does it, it wins Oscars! That doesn’t seem fair at all.)

    A significant number of these remakes prove the malleability of their source material; some samurai movies worked equally well (or better) as westerns, for example. Others backfired spectacularly. (Just because your not-very-scary horror movie is beloved by fans of so-bad-it’s-good nonsense does not mean it deserves a full-bown comedy remake.) But they are all notable because they turned an old movie into a new film a totally novel way.

  • Netflix May Have Small Theatrical Window Plans for Warner Bros. Movies — Report

    Netflix‘s plans for movies after its projected acquisition of Warner Bros. still remains up in the air, but a new report suggests that the streamer has plans for some very small theatrical windows.

    What are Netflix’s reported plans for WB movies’ theatrical windows?

    In a new report from Deadline on the theatrical return for the Stranger Things finale, it’s noted that those in Hollywood remain wary of Netflix’s plans for WB movies once they acquire the company. Deadline notes that, although Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has said nothing will change, sources note that Netflix have been “proponents of a 17-day” theatrical window for films.

    The move, should it come to fruition, is one that Deadline notes would “steamroll the theatrical business,” with the report mentioning that companies like AMC believe a 45-day window is a line that cannot be crossed. While no confirmation of any theatrical window exists, Deadline has reported multiple times through December that Sarandos is a big fan of the 17-day window structure.

    Although rumors suggest Netflix will be shrinking the theatrical windows for films if and when it acquires WB, Sarandos himself has said otherwise. Following backlash on the idea of a shorter window and concerns about Netflix’s proposed acquisition of WB, Sarandos has said that it’ll be business as usual when it comes to how WB works.

    “There’s been a lot of talk about theatrical distribution, so we want to set the record straight: we are 100% committed to releasing Warner Bros. films in theaters with industry-standard windows,” said Sarandos when Netflix announced the acquisition.

  • Ryan Coogler Reveals Cancelled ‘Black Panther’ Plans

    Ryan Coogler wanted Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter to feature in Black Panther.

    The 39-year-old director revealed that when Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger and Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue were confirmed to be the antagonists of his 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, Coogler had also pitched the Spider-Man villain to be the big bad for Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa to face off with.

    However, Coogler explained he had to drop Kraven the Hunter after Sony Pictures — who owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and his villains — rejected his pitch, as the studio had plans to produce their own spinoff flick about the character.

    During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler said: “When I took that job, Joe Robert Cole, who’s my co-writer on both the Panthers, [he] had been working with Marvel and they had a line, so when I showed up, it was like, ‘Hey, we have our villains. Our villains are Klaue and Erik Killmonger.’ That had been decided upon.

    “The outline of villains was Klaw and Kilmonger, but they weren’t sure. They weren’t sure. Klaw felt slightly modular to them, and obviously, it was the great Andy Serkis, so I’m hyped to work with him … I’m a big Spider-Man fan, especially Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Kraven is in that. He’s also great in the books.

    “I was like, ‘Yo, can I have Kraven in the movie?’ They were like, ‘We don’t think so, but let us check.’ So, they hit Sony, and Sony was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ They came back to me like, ‘Yo, we can’t do it.’ So, I was like, ‘Okay.’”

    Black Panther follows T’Challa (Boseman) as he returns home to Wakanda to claim the throne after his father’s death and step into his role as king.

    When a powerful outsider (Jordan) challenges his rule, T’Challa must confront his nation’s past and decide what kind of leader – and hero – he will become.

    Following the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — which saw Letitia Wright’s Shuri take on the mantle from T’Challa after Boseman passed away from colon cancer in 2020 — Coogler confirmed he was working on the third instalment.

    Speaking during the Sinners panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, he teased: “If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny.’ But we’re working on it hard. So it’s next. Yes, it’s the next movie.”

    Coogler also confirmed he was writing a role for Denzel Washington for the third Black Panther film.

    Speaking on the 7pm in Brooklyn podcast, the director said: “Denzel is family at this point. I’ve been trying to work with him since day one.

    “I think he’s the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture, forget about it. I’ve been talking to him about this for a long time.”

    Four of the Twilight movies have found a new streaming home.

    Based on the popular book series by Stephanie Meyer, the Twilight Saga film franchise began in 2008. There are five films that are part of the series in total, including 2008’s Twilight, 2009’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon, 2010’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 2011’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

    Where can four of the Twilight movies now be streamed?

    The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 have all found a new streaming home, as they’re now all available to stream on HBO Max.

    The first Twilight movie, meanwhile, is available to rent or purchase on digital streaming services such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.

    There’s been some talk about rebooting the Twilight franchise, with Lionsgate Television having announced that a TV show is in early development in 2023. There hasn’t been much news about the project since then, however, though it is worth noting that Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment recently released all five Twilight movies in theaters this past fall.

  • The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ X-Men Teaser Reveals Dr. Doom’s Plan

    The following post contains spoilers for the third Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Can you spoil a trailer? Debatable. But we’re warning you anyway.

    The first Avengers: Doomsday teaser reintroduced Steve Rogers. The second focused on Thor and his daughter, Love. The third … is all about the X-Men.

    While it mostly features Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, the part that really has our attention is the stuff with Cyclops, played by James Marsden, and finally wearing his classic Jim Lee X-Men costume in live-action for the very first time. The trailer shows Cyclops screaming in rage, unleashing a massive optic blast, surrounded by the ruins of the X-Mansion. Look closely and you’ll even see the legs of a massive Sentinel robot.

    In a surprise pieces of news, the rumors about acclaimed director Jordan Peele entering the world of the MCU got a new update.

    What’s the latest Jordan Peele MCU movie rumor?

    In a recent post on X from Cosmic Marvel, it was noted that insider Daniel Richtman said that Marvel Studios is eager to have Peele direct a movie set in the MCU. While a rumor like that has been around for some time, Peele’s own production studio, Monkeypaw Productions, chimed in.

    The production company simply quoted the news, replying with an emoji of a pair of eyes looking on. The quote tweet quickly sent fans theorizing as to what it could possibly mean. Peele’s name and the MCU are no strangers to being connected, with the Get Out director having been a long-time wished for director to head up a superhero film.

    While some fans of Peele’s work don’t want him making a film that isn’t an original project, many seem to be happy. There have been rumors floating around for some time that Peele and Marvel Studios have been speaking with one another, although it’s unclear exactly whether or not we’ll ever see Peele directing a movie set in the MCU.

    Peele broke out into the world of directing with 2017’s Get Out, which quickly catapulted him into superstardom. After that, he directed 2019’s Us, as well as 2022’s Nope. He’s currently working on a new project that remains mysterious.

    There are big, swings from auteurs like Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg. (I’d say they’re taking big original swings, but The Odyssey was written, y’know, 2,700 years old.) There are up-and-coming directors like Zach Cregger trying their hands at major horror IP. There are pedigreed sequels to beloved franchises like Toy Story and The Avengers. There’s the new version of Street Fighter featuring WWE Champion Cody Rhodes sporting the most magnificent flattop in cinema history. And then there is whatever Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu have cooking with Digger. (Tom Cruise is Digger! Who is Digger? He’s Tom Cruise!)

  • The Worst Blockbusters of 2025

    No matter how often people repeat the old mantra that quality trumps quantity, Hollywood remains insistent: Actually, quantity is better.

    2025 showed the limits of that strategy. Yes, some of the year’s big movies delivered their required doses of excitement and humor. James Gunn’s Superman was a fresh new take on the oldest comic-book superhero. Of course, James Cameron once again bombarded moviegoers’ eyeballs with intergalactic spectacle, this time with Avatar: Fire and Ash. And if you want to call Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another a blockbuster — and its budget certainly places it in the blockbuster category — then there wasn’t a better movie period in 2025 than a blockbuster.

    But in movies as in life, bigger is not always better. And in 2025 a lot of the bigger movies were not only not better, they were substandard. Like, really, really stinky and bad. Awful even! Today we are ranking the ten worst blockbusters of 2025 from the vaguely tolerable to the ones that should get buried in that landfill in New Mexico where they dumped all the unsold copies of E.T. for Atari.

    It must be noted here that the term “blockbuster” originally meant a massive financial hit; the sort of movie that drew lines around the block. But let’s face it: No one lines up for movies anymore, and some of the biggest movies never play in theaters in 2025. So I’m instead going to define “blockbuster” here more in terms of sheer size and ambition. These were the films that aspired, financially if not creatively, to a certain level of scope and budgetary excess.

    Again, we’re looking at those only films that landed on the wrong side of the quality over quantity divide. These ten films had quantity for days. Quality? Not so much.

    Directed by David Freyne, the romantic drama-fantasy stars Miles Teller; Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner. The film became available to stream at home via VOD on December 23.

    Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

    The sequel to 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s follows former night guard Mike and his little sister Abby as they uncover more disturbing supernatural history about the haunted animatronics at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and encounter the vengeful spirit of a little girl named Charlotte.

    Directed by Emma Tammi, the horror film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace and more. The film became available at home via VOD on December 23.

    Goodbye June

    Goodbye June follows four siblings as they grapple with grief, family tensions and reconciliation when their ailing mother’s health takes a turn for the worse during the holiday season.

    The Christmas family drama film was directed by Kate Winslet and stars Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, Johnny Flynn, Helen Mirren and Winslet. The film begins streaming exclusively on Netflix beginning December 12.

    Sentimental Value

    In Sentimental Value, two estranged sisters reconnect when their famous but indifferent father, who is a famous director, recasts one of his daughter’s roles in his next movie with a young Hollywood starlet instead. The film explores generational trauma, artistic legacy and grief.

    The Danish-Norwegian drama directed by Joachim Trier and starring Renate Reinsv, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning became available to stream via VOD on December 23.

    Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere

    Based on the Warren Zanes’ book of the same name, his biographical musical drama chronicles a specific moment in the career of New Jersey rock legend Bruce Springsteen, specifically the time he spent crafting his raw 1982 album Nebraska amid his personal struggles with family trauma and mental health, as well as his battle for artistic control against his label at the time.

    Starring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, the Scott Cooper-directed musical biopic became available to watch at home via VOD on December 23.

    Avatar: Fire and Ash includes a crisis lifeline in the end credits for a good reason.

    James Cameron and 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash, also known as Avatar 3, opened in the United States this past weekend. The sequel to Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprise their respective roles as Jake Sully, Neytiri, and Colonel Miles Quaritch.

    Some Avatar audiences have noticed that there’s a suicide prevention hotline in the closing credits of Avatar: Fire and Ash. While this confused some and led others to make jokes, there’s actually a good, narrative-related reason as to why this is in there.

    Why is there a crisis lifeline in the end credits of Avatar: Fire and Ash?

    In the first half of Avatar: Fire and Ash, there’s a scene where Jake and Neytiri’s Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) briefly puts a gun to his head and considers pulling the trigger. This is shortly after he gets into a fight with his father, as both of them are still in various stages of processing the death of Jake’s son/Lo’ak’s brother Neteyam (Jame Flatters).

    Filmmakers are strongly encouraged to include suicide prevention hotline numbers or other resources whenever a project, be it a movie or a TV show, addresses this subject matter. Per the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, “We do know that suicide on screen can cause significant distress, and can, in some cases, lead to vulnerable viewers becoming suicidal. If you’ve lost a loved one to suicide, struggle with suicidal ideation or have attempted suicide in the past, you deserve a heads up so you can make the best decision for yourself. If you need to give these shows or movies a miss, there’s no shame in that! Self-care means checking in with yourself about how you’re feeling and what you can cope with, and making the best decisions for you.”

    Avatar: Fire and Ash is now playing in theaters.

  • ‘Anaconda’ Review: A Horror of a Comedy Movie

    Is Anaconda the first Hollywood movie to include an on-camera discussion of IP? The heroes of this meta-reboot of the campy ’90s horror movie are wannabe filmmakers who acquire the remake rights to Anaconda because, as one character puts it, “that’s all big movies are” now.

    The moment is meant as a meta-joke, of course. We’re only watching this new Jack Black and Paul Rudd buddy movie because someone in Hollywood thought the Anaconda IP was strong enough to pull viewers into theaters to watch it. But that line plays more like tragedy than comedy, since it’s a tacit acknowledgement that basically the only way Hollywood will make a comedy these days (or any genre, for that matter) is by awkwardly shoehorning some IP into it.

    It’s not enough to make a movie about funny people with recognizable desires and relatable problems anymore. You’ve got to find a way for those people to solve those problems by fighting a giant CGI snake while making desperate quips about how the snake is actually a metaphor for something.

    Those snake-fighting scenes are all the more disappointing because Anaconda’s earlier ones before the jungle antics (and IP exploitation) are pretty promising. They introduce a cast of friends from Buffalo led by Doug (Black), who grew up wanting to become a major movie director but eventually settled for a humble life as a husband, father, and wedding videographer who injects all sorts of inappropriate movie references into his work over the objections of his clients. Doug’s boss tries to convince him to accept his fate by insisting “This is a B, maybe even a B+ life!”

    If only Anaconda were a B, maybe even a B+ movie. Unfortunately, Doug’s childhood bestie, a struggling Hollywood actor named Griff (Rudd), returns home for Doug’s surprise birthday party with a present: The recently acquired rights to the underlying Japanese novel that inspired 1997’s Anaconda, which starred Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube as the members of a film crew who travel to the Amazon to make a documentary about an indigenous tribe and instead wind up targeted by the local wildlife.

    Griff believes that with the Anaconda rights and less than $50,000 they and their two other childhood buddies — drug-addled Kenny (Steve Zahn) and recently divorced Claire (Thandiwe Newton) — can finally make their cinematic dreams come true. The quartet heads to Brazil where they hook up with an eccentric snake wrangler (I’m Still Here’s Selton Mello) — and accidentally get mixed up with a beautiful young woman (The Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melchior) on the run from some tough dudes who want control of a gold mine.

    Why, if the entire budget of your film is less than $50,000 and your cast and crew consists entirely of five people, you would go all the way from Upstate New York to the Amazon to shoot your Anaconda remake is never explained. But pretty much nothing in the film from the moment Black, Rudd, and company touch down in Brazil makes any sense. The audience is simply expected to go along with the ludicrous series of events that follows, which does indeed include the crew encountering an actual oversized snake. (Apparently Anaconda was more accurate than any of us ever realized.)

    The notion of a bunch of losers coping with an intense midlife crisis through moviemaking is an absolutely valid one for a comeddy. Unfortunately, it would require a script that spends more than just its first couple of minutes considering its characters as human beings. Once Griff, Doug, and their colleagues get to South America, all of the weightier ideas take a backseat for a series of toothless moviemaking spoofs.

    In a world where the lacerating corporate filmmaking satire The Studio already exists, broad jokes about wacky animal trainers and ego-driven actors trying to influence their projects to benefit their own roles just won’t cut it. (Anaconda was co-written and directed by Tom Gormican, whose previous movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, was another winking cinematic caricature with a great premise and an underwhelming execution.)

    All four leads are very game to look very silly, and I applaud them for that. I can hardly blame them for signing on to this project, as awkwardly constructed as it may be. There are so few big-screen comedies of any kinds made these days, that you take the work wherever you can get it.

    Anaconda’s early scenes, set in Buffalo and seemingly shot there, look appropriately shabby; the interiors are cluttered and drab, and filled with overexposed daylight pouring in from unshaded windows. For a couple of minutes, Rudd and Black’s characters get to act like authentic friends who’ve lost touch and reconnected over their mutual love of movies, over this art form’s power to tell stories that unite people in the dark through their shared connection and humanity.

    Then they go and run from a CGI snake for an hour. One sad I thought had watching Anaconda: If this is the only stuff modern Hollywood makes now, would these aspiring auteurs even want to work there anymore?

    RATING: 4/10

    For those of us Olds who remember life in the 20th century (or even life in [shudder] the 1980s) the fact that the 21st century is already 25 percent complete is slightly unfathomable. (Remember: Although most people and all Y2K-compliant computers celebrated the new millennium on January 1, 2000, the 21st century technically began one year later, on January 1, 2001. And now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to push my glasses up the bridge of my nose, straighten my bow tie, and very carefully adjust my pocket protector to ensure it is properly secured.)

    While the state of movies (and especially movie theaters) does not look especially healthy at this exact moment, the first 25 years of the 21st century were overloaded with an endless supply of modern classics in just about every imaginable genre, and even a few new genres that had never existed before. (What do you think the Lumière brothers would have thought of screenlife films? How would Thomas Edison have reacted to the notion of a legacyquel? These are fun questions to ponder.)

    As we careen toward the second half of the 2020s, let’s take a look back at the best movies of the century to date. And just because it has a nice ring to it, let’s make it the 21 top films of the 21st century. That pleases my OCD. Bear in mind that these choices represent just one pathetic film nerd’s opinion of course; your own list might look entirely different.
