  • Rian Johnson Has ‘Conceptual Ideas’ for ‘Knives Out 4’

    [ad_1]

Rian Johnson has some “conceptual ideas” for a fourth Knives Out movie.

As the latest entry Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery debuts on Netflix, the 51-year-old director has already turned his attention to what’s next for his whodunnit franchise, and while Johnson does have some ideas for the fourth film, he has emphasized they are not “concrete” concepts.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson said: “I have some basic, elemental, conceptual ideas. Like, ‘Okay, it’d be interesting if it were this kind of thing’ kernels.

“I don’t have actual concrete ideas. I don’t have a theme yet. I don’t have a location. It’s really pretty vague, and I feel like it’s good to kinda keep it vague until I’m ready to actually sit down and write it.”

While he is working on a fourth Knives Out movie, Johnson wants to direct at least one original picture before returning to his whodunnit franchise.

The Star Wars: The Last Jedi director explained each Knives Out film is a product of its time, and so the next movie’s plot and themes can not be rushed.

He said: “Part of making these movies, for me, is reacting to the present moment, not necessarily with current events or politics or culture specifically, but in terms of what we’re all feeling in the world at that moment.

“I like that these movies are not timeless, per se, and that they all have one foot in something that is common to all of us in our present moment.”

“So, yeah, I don’t know. I have a vague notion, but trying to keep it vague until it’s time to actually do it.”

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he tries to solve the murder of Monseigneur Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin) in a small parish.

While priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) appears to be the likely culprit, Blanc is adamant there is more to the case, and soon finds his intricate investigation begins to spiral out of control when Wicks seemingly returns from the grave.

Wake Up Dead Man also stars Jeremy Renner as town doctor Nat Sharp, Daryl McCormack as aspiring politician Cy Draven, Kerry Washington as lawyer Vera Draven, Cailee Spaeny as concert cellist Simone Vivane, Glenn Close as devout churchgoer Martha Delacroix, Thomas Haden Church as groundskeeper Samson Holt, Andrew Scott as author Lee Ross and Mila Kunis as police chief Geraldine Scott.

While Johnson will return to Knives Out eventually, the Looper filmmaker previously insisted no one other than himself would write or direct a new entry in his franchise.

He told Variety: “I don’t see it as IP. Each Knives Out film is something I want to make. If that stops being the case, we won’t do another one.”

Johnson added he was not interested in “milking” Knives Out, and instead only wanted to expand on the series if he had the right story to tell.

He said: “It’s not about milking a franchise. It’s about making something good again. The rest is noise.”

  • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Review: The Best Avatar Yet?

    [ad_1]

James Cameron is in no hurry. This guy has been working on Avatar in some shape or form since at least 1994, and the two Avatar sequels for the last 16 years. Compared to all of that, Avatar: Fire and Ash’s 197-minute runtime is like a drop in the ocean where Payakan (The Mighty Tulkun) roams. If spending three hours and 15 minutes in a theater intimidates you, stay home and look at social media on your phone.

It will be your loss. Avatar: Fire and Ash weds the best of cutting-edge moviemaking technology with old-fashioned Hollywood storytelling for a tale of the wild frontier (in space) told in high frame rate 3D instead of three-strip Technicolor. It’s got incredible visuals, jaw-dropping action, two pairs of mirrored heroes and villains, talking alien whales, and a space witch who entrances a man with interstellar LSD. It basically puts every other large-scale blockbuster of 2025 to shame.

I write all of this as someone who enjoyed but did not adore either previous Avatar film. Of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water I wrote that “if the story occasionally seems a bit all over the place, well, there are worse things in the world than a filmmaker throwing every last morsel of creativity into his work.” Fire and Ash was the movie where this franchise finally clicked together for me, where the weight of all those decades of work off-screen — not to mention all the groundwork Cameron has laid on screen with his enormous cast — really paid off emotionally. By the end of the film, when three characters (who I will not name) were doing something absurdly cool yet incredibly intense (that I will not describe) my heart was practically in my throat.

I will note here that I only saw The Way of Water once, and I did not revisit it before Fire and Ash and I had no problem re-acclimating to the otherworldly climes of the faraway planet Pandora and the various factions fighting over it. That includes human Marine turned Na’vi warrior Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) , his Na’vi wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their kids, including reckless Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), sensitive Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) and youngling Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss). The Sullys also care for a human orphan named Spider (Jack Champion), who is the biological son of Jake’s arch-nemesis Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), Jake’s former commanding officer (and former human) who he killed in the first Avatar.

In The Way of Water Quaritch was resurrected in a cloned Na’vi body, which he now uses to pursue Jake and his family across the Pandora. This time out, he partners with Varang (Oona Chaplin), the feral leader of a fire-worshiping clan of Na’vi. While the previous Avatars mostly depicted Pandora’s alien residents as fractious but largely well-intentioned, Varang’s ash people are straight-up mean, and her collaboration with Quaritch scrambles the allegiances at play in Cameron’s sprawling story even further.

    20TH CENTURY STUDIOS

    20TH CENTURY STUDIOS

Cameron has once again surrounded that story with an astounding array of visual imagination, so much so that sitting here not long after the movie I’m struggling to remember all of the most interesting elements. There are new alien creatures to admire, like undersea monsters that are best described as squid sharks. There’s new technology and gadgets as well; bigger and more complex warships and exo suits. The amount of sheer imagination on display — much of it tossed off amidst massive set pieces or dialogue scenes — is staggering. I cannot imagine the amount of time and effort that went into designing the look and function of a human transport with wheels that can rotate inside their wells so it can swivel at will, and this vehicle appears onscreen for maybe — maybe! — 20 seconds.

The Fire and Ash press screening began with a recorded message from James Cameron insisting that despite its computer-generated imagery, the Avatar movies are the work of legions of artists. (At least as he defines these things, this is not an animated feature.) Behind-the-scenes footage showed Worthington and Saldaña performing in “The Volume” with little dots all over their faces side-by-side with their Na’vi characters in order to showcase the extent to which the cast’s acting comes through on the big screen in their alien counterparts.

There might be a bit of Mr. Cameron doth protest too much here (obviously there is a ton of digital artistry on display) but whatever alchemy of technical wizardry and human input makes it, the Na’vi are truly remarkable creations — and their performances are genuinely affecting, from Neytiri’s grief over her fallen son to Varang’s lust for power to Kiri’s wonder at the power of Pandora’s “Great Mother” spirit, Eywa.

Every time one of these Avatar movies comes out, everyone jokes about how they’re gussied-up cartoons and people online joke about how no one cares about them. Then the film actually arrives in theaters and it’s epic and exciting and gorgeous and heartbreaking. Would I be interested in a James Cameron motion picture not set on Pandora? Absolutely. But after Fire and Ash, which really might be my favorite of the Avatar films to date, I’m also okay if he just stays on Pandora forever.

  • Disney Plans Live-Action ‘Gaston’ Film

    [ad_1]

With Disney rapidly running out out animated movies to remake in live-action, they’re apparently turning to … animated movies they have already remade in live-action.

Deadline reports that Disney is currently developing a live-action film based on Gaston, the villain from Beauty and the Beast. Dave Callaham, whose writing credits include Mortal KombatShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is working on the latest draft of the screenplay. (According to Deadline, “Kate Herron and Briony Redman penned a previous draft.”)

Disney first made their animated version of Beauty and the Beast in 1991. Their remake followed in 2017. In that movie Luke Evans played Gaston, with Josh Gad as his comic sidekick LeFou. The movie was an enormous hit, grossing $1.26 billion worldwide.

Shortly after the film was released there was talk of making a Disney+ television series about Evans and Gad’s Gaston and LeFou. But the show never actually went into production.

READ MORE: The Best Netflix Movies of 2025

Deadline writes this new Gaston will not involve Evans. Instead, it is “a new and original version with a new actor, and that the film will have ‘swashbuckling’ tones to it.”

Should this new project go into production, it would follow the playbook set down a few years ago by Disney with their recycling of 101 Dalmatians. Having already made a live-action Dalmatians back in 1996, they instead made a live-action prequel film specifically about Cruella De Vil, 2021’s Cruella starring Emma Stone in the title role.

Whether he can sustain his own film or not, the Gaston character has become one of Disney’s most popular villains. He has his own restaurant in the Fantasyland area of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and videos of the character interacting with park guests have gone viral online.

  • Great Rob Reiner Movies to Watch on Streaming

    [ad_1]

The entertainment world is reeling from the shocking deaths of TV star and film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. At this point, the facts of the case as they are known so far are almost too horrifying to contemplate.

Whatever happens in the investigation into the Reiners’ deaths, this much is true and will remain true forever: The first decade of Rob Reiner’s work behind the camera is about as good of a start to a filmmaker’s career in Hollywood history. Thankfully, many of those movies he made in the 1980s and ’90s are available to stream at home right now. (Many but not all; if you want to watch The Sure Thing, you might need to find a physical copy.)

Here’s a rundown of six Rob Reiner favorites — including his most recent comedy, which was just added to streaming in the last few days — that you can watch at home right now in tribute to one of the most versatile and reliable American directors of the late 20th century.

    This Is Spinal Tap

Reiner wasted no time making an impact on Hollywood; his feature directorial debut essentially invented a comedy subgenre. There were fake documentaries before This Is Spinal Tap, but few as convincing in their conjuring of a reality and everything in it. Reiner directed the film and co-starred as bumbling documentarian Marty Di Bergi, who follows “England’s loudest band” Spinal Tap (Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer) as they embark on a disastrous tour of America. While Spinal Tap was not a massive hit in its initial release, it became one of the definitive cult classics of the 1980s, not to mention one of the funniest films of all time.

This Is Spinal Tap is currently streaming on HBO Max.

    Stand By Me

Reiner named his production company, Castle Rock Entertainment, after the setting of his iconic coming-of-age drama, based on the short story “The Body” by Stephen King about four young men — Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell — who set off to locate the dead body of a missing boy. One thing that unites all of Reiner’s best work regardless of genre is his deft touch with actors, thanks to his own experiences in front of the camera. In Stand By Me, he helped his quartet of young leads deliver four of the best child performances in film history, and he rounded out his terrific cast with more great actors like Kiefer Sutherland, John Cusack, and Richard Dreyfuss as the narrator and the older version of Wheaton’s Gordie Lachance.

Stand By Me is currently streaming on Netflix.

    The Princess Bride

Like This Is Spinal Tap, Reiner’s The Princess Bride was only a mild box-office hit in its initial theatrical release. Time and countless cable viewings gradually transformed it into one of the most beloved children’s films of the 20th century. A kindly grandfather (Peter Falk) reads a story to his sick grandson (Fred Savage), which turns out to be the adventure of the brave Westley (Cary Elwes) to rescue his beloved Buttercup (Robin Wright) from the clutches of a gang of crooks, including fast-talking Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) and sword-wielding Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin). Although ostensibly a film for kids, it has all the wit, romance, and swashbuckling excitement their parents could ever wish for.

The Princess Bride is currently streaming on Disney+.

    When Harry Met Sally…

One reason why it took Reiner a long time to get his due: Unlike some auteurs who rework the same themes and ideas over and over again, he was never content to repeat himself ad infinitum. For example: In between a post-modern fairy tale and a dark psychological horror film (Misery, one of his most underrated films), Reiner directed maybe the definitive romantic comedy of the late 20th century, When Harry Met Sally… Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star as the title characters, who keep bumping into each other, always as friends, but then gradually begin to contemplate a more serious relationship. It’s now one of the most imitated and quoted films of the 1980s, and definitely worth a revisit if you haven’t seen it in a while.

When Harry Met Sally… is currently streaming on Starz.

    Albert Brooks: Defending My Life

Reiner met comedian and filmmaker Albert Brooks in high school, back when Brooks was still named Albert Einstein, and the two maintained a friendship that lasted well over a half a century. When the time came for a career-retrospective documentary about Brooks, the task fell to Reiner, who assembled an affectionate and comprehensive portrait of his pal and pioneering comic filmmaker. In addition to great archival materials, the film features extensive conversations with Brooks and Reiner. It’s so fun watching them kibbitz about their lives and Brooks’ work, you might not want the doc to end.

Albert Brooks: Defending My Life is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues

Reiner’s final film as director was released just a few months ago. Spinal Tap II was already a nostalgic trip back to his directorial debut, and a reunion with the stars of This Is Spinal Tap. Now, given Reiner’s death, it will play even more melancholically. Reiner directed and once again played documentarian Marty Di Bergi, who tracks down the former members of Tap and chronicles their preparations for a contractually-mandated reunion concert. Spinal Tap II is a long ways from the original film, but it’s a sweet and funny victory lap for a great director who certainly deserved one.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is currently streaming on HBO Max.

  • Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Adds Beloved Villain to Monsterverse Movie

    [ad_1]

As production continues on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, a new key plot detail for the upcoming Monsterverse movie has finally been revealed, confirming the titular duo’s next formidable opponent. The next installment is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027, three years after The New Empire’s theatrical debut.

What villain has been added to Godzilla x Kong: Supernova?

In a new listing posted on the Writers Guild of America West page as part of writer David Callaham’s feature writing credits, it has been confirmed that SpaceGodzilla will be making its official Monsterverse debut in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. The said kaiju is expected to serve as the new sequel’s main villain.

SpaceGodzilla was first introduced in Toho’s 1994 movie Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. The character is described as a mutated clone of the king of the monsters. It was created by Kensho Yamashita and Hiroshi Kashiwabara. After its feature debut, the extraterrestrial monster was next seen on the TV show Godzilla Island in 1997. The upcoming Monsterverse sequel serves as SpaceGodzilla’s second major appearance in a movie.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is being directed by Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) from a screenplay written by Dave Callaham. The cast will include Golden Globe nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Legion), Jack O’Connell (SAS: Rogue Heroes), Delroy Lindo (Sinners), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Alycia Debnam-Carey (Fear the Walking Dead), and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), with Stevens reprising his role as Trapper from 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The film is reportedly featuring “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise began in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, which starred Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Due to its success, it was followed by several sequels, including 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and The New Empire. At the moment, Legendary is also producing a spin-off series with Apple TV, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is slated to return for a second season.

  • Supergirl: Major Character Confirmed to Appear in DCU Movie

    [ad_1]

It’s unknown just how many cameos the upcoming Supergirl might have, but thanks to star Milly Alcock, we do know one major star will be appearing in the upcoming DCU movie.

What character is set to appear in Supergirl?

Speaking during a press conference on the upcoming movie, Alcock (who stars in the film as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl) was asked about the hardest scene to film. Alcock then revealed that the scene in question was with David Corenswet’s Superman, revealing he’ll be in the movie in some capacity.

“Oh my god, it was… It was with Superman. And I wasn’t in the suit, and I was speaking… A different language. A different language,” Alcock replied (via GamesRadar+). “Yeah, that day was really hard, it was, like, 2 degrees. He jumped right in the deep end. Yeah, that was a hard day. The whole scene was in Kryptonian. The whole scene was, yeah… Yeah, Kryptonian.”

The news is perhaps not too shocking, as Alcock also appeared at the end of Corenswet’s Superman. However, it does reveal that the familial pair will once again come together for something in the upcoming movie, although it’s unknown as to what their scene will be.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. The film stars Milly Alcock, who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El and will be written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn of the project in 2023. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

  • The Old ‘Street Fighter’ Doesn’t Need a Remake Because It’s Already Good

    [ad_1]

I don’t have a lot of memories from my childhood birthdays. But I vividly remember my 14th birthday party.

My parents took me and a dozen or so of my best buddies to Movie City 5 in East Brunswick, NJ to see Street FighterFor a video-game loving child of the 1990s, the Street Fighter movie was a pop-culture event somewhere on magnitude of a Squid Game/Stranger Things crossover. This wasn’t just exciting; it was important. It was the culmination of something. It was an action movie starring one of the hottest action stars at the time, Jean-Claude Van Damme, plus the great Raul Julia, a favorite amongst ’90s kids thanks to the two live-action Addams Family movies, as M. Bison.

And the Street Fighter movie was written and directed by Steven E. de Souza, the guy who wrote CommandoDie Hard, and The Running Man. It was like God himself had seen it in His almighty beneficence to create a movie as a birthday gift for me personally. There was no conceivable scenario where Street Fighter didn’t instantly become an all-time favorite.

Or so me and my buddies thought. I remember the movie, but what I really remember is the drive home from the theater, in which a bunch of befuddled high-school freshman all simultaneously came to the stunning realization that a movie they really wanted to see could turn out to be a total piece of s—.

READ MORE: The Worst Movies of the Year

Julia was sort of funny, we all agreed, but what was going on with Van Damme? Some of the characters looked reasonably close to their counterparts from the game, but others were just … odd. (Who was the shrimp who played Ken? Why was Chun-Li a TV reporter? Why did Dhalsim have clothes and hair?!?) The film’s plot involved a civil war in the Asian nation of “Shadaloo.” The street-fighting tournament of the game was nowhere to be seen.

Accordingly, while the film concluded with a Street Fighter II-esque brawl between Van Damme’s Guile and Julia’s Bison, the film wasn’t exactly the non-stop martial-arts spectacular we expected. The fights was intermittent during the first two acts, and a lot of them were brief and awkwardly assembled. (It’s always a good sign when your movie has five credited editors, right? Quantity over quality!) Forget about de Souza’s action movies, my peer group had already discovered Jackie Chan, John Woo, and the burgeoning world of ’90s Hong Kong action. Compared to the caliber of martial arts we’d come to expect by the mid-’90s, Street Fighter just didn’t measure up.

The world largely agreed. The film did okay at the box office but was lambasted by critics. It went down in history, along with Super Mario Bros., as the early proof that Hollywood did not understand video games and was utterly incapable of successfully adapting one to film. 30 years later, Paramount has produced a full-scale Street Fighter reboot, one that at least based on the first trailer, really embraces the game’s fight-heavy structure and colorful 16-bit aesthetics.

The excitement around the new Street Fighter’s first teaser and over-the-top (but game accurate) character designs gave me the itch to revisit the 1994 film for the first time in a while. My expectation was I’d be groaning and laughing inside of ten minutes and eventually turn it off in favor of a better film.

That’s not what happened at all.

Okay, I did laugh — but mostly at material that was intended to be funny. Today you would never see a big-screen adaptation of a coveted IP with this much disdain for its source material. As a Street Fighter-loving kid, that annoyed me to no end. As an adult, I really admired de Souza’s IDGAF attitude toward the whole thing. He refused to take this nonsense seriously for even one single second, and all of the overt, intentional mockery of the concept played really well for me now — at least as compared to that first viewing 30 years ago. (Oy.)

The centerpiece of that material is Julia, who is great as M. Bison. Wikipedia (which is never wrong) tells me he took the role because his kids were Street Fighter II fans. That may be. But he was also totally on board with de Souza’s approach — namely to turn M. Bison in to a figure of outright comedy. Take, for instance, his line readings in this scene. (Also: Watch the way he replaces his work evil dictator hat for his casual evil dictator hat.)

Incredible stuff. There are only a few people in the history of cinema who could successfully deliver a line like “Tell you what: After I’ve crushed my enemies, we’ll see about getting you published. That should cheer you up, eh?” Raul Julia was one of them.

Did I mention M. Bison’s command console for world conquest looks like the Street Fighter II arcade cabinet? I had no memory of this, but boy did it make me laugh.

Van Damme is hilarious too, although admittedly that’s for more unintentional reasons. He uses this strange voice; very quiet and whispery, almost like a bad comedian’s impression of JCVD doing Dirty Harry.

It makes absolutely no sense … but when I noticed that Guile’s uniform has a big U.S. flag on the shoulder (he’s got a flag tattoo on his shoulder too), and I realized we’re meant to believe this man is a red-blooded American, I suddenly hit upon the notion that Van Damme thinks he’s speaking with an American accent. Which really unlocked the whole performance for me. (That final scene also shows that while the character designs weren’t strictly faithful, by the end of the movie most of the key Street Fighter II fighters had basically evolved into their signature looks.)

I do hope the new Street Fighter is good. I am sure it will take a more dutiful approach to its source material — as all adaptations of big IP do in the 2020s. The financial rewards of these projects are too enormous to task any risks whatsoever. When fans revolted against the look of Sonic the Hedgehog in the first Sonic movie trailer, and then Paramount responded by totally redesigning the character, and then the film became an enormous hit (with two sequels and a TV spinoff and counting), that doomed any chance of getting a weirdo, winking, self-satirizing adaptation like 1994’s Street Fighter any time soon.

Maybe that’s why I had such a positive reaction to the movie this time around. It’s got a very similar vibe to the 1960s Batman TV show, which embraced and also gently poked fun at the absurdity of its premise as well. And sure, if that was the only adaptation of Batman in live-action, maybe it would look a little smug and annoying. But in a world where there are half a dozen gruff big-screen Batmen to choose from, the Adam West Batman is a delightful alternative.

That’s how I look at Street Fighter (1994) now. Those who demand an “accurate” adaptation will have one next fall. The rest of us will have Raul Julia showing off briefcases full of money with his face on it, hissing lines like “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday!”

  • The First ‘Street Fighter’ Trailer Is a Blast of ’90s Nostalgia

    [ad_1]

The original Street Fighter movie from 1994 was … not great. The characters were not especially faithful to the classic fighting game series and the story was reworked to make it a low-grade Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle. (JCVD played Guile.) The film, the great Raul Julia’s last before his death (giving it his all as M. Bison), did okay at the box office but it has not exactly aged into a ’90s classic.

The new Street Fighter film almost looks like an attempt to correct that. It’s set in 1993, with a story (and character design) that could have been ripped straight out of the old Capcom arcade games. Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken (Noah Centineo) are brought in to a new fighting tournament where they will meet all the classic characters from the Street Fighter franchise, including Jason Momoa as Blanka, and WWE’s Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns as Guile (with a massive flattop haircut) and Akuma, respectively.

The first teaser for the film just debuted and it is quite an object. Behold:

There are also a whopping 17 different character posters each more ’90s-tastic than the next.

    Street Fighter: Character Posters

The new movie of Street Fighter hits theaters next October. The first posters are here, and they really look like the classic game.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!

Street Fighter is scheduled to open in theaters on October 16, 2026.

  • The Worst Movies of 2025

    [ad_1]

It is a film critic’s pleasure and privilege to make a list of the ten best movies every year. (I enjoy it so much, I make a list of 20 favorites.) Some disagree with me, but I think it’s also the film critic’s responsibility to make a list of the worst movies as well. (I do not enjoy this one quite as much, so this list will just be 12 titles, thank you very much.)

Writing 2024’s worst-of list, I wrote “hopefully 2025 will bring better-looking movies, if not more entertaining ones. That doesn’t seem like too much to ask.” What the batch of films below presupposes is … maybe it was?

As a great of a year for cinema as 2025 was, there were some undeniable low points as well. Bad streaming titles, bad big-screen blockbusters, bad musicals, bad sequels, bad live-action remakes, bad action movies, and bad sci-fi disasters where Ice Cube saves the world with the help of Amazon Prime’s remarkably affordable and speedy shipping. (These are hypothetical examples, obviously, not based on any specific motion pictures about Ice Cube using an online retailing giant to defeat an alien invasion.)

With the good comes the bad. That’s another reason why worst-of lists are valuable. Can you ever truly recognize and appreciate the great moments in life without the horrible ones to compare them to? Maybe. Am I just trying to justify lashing out after the pain from watching these crummy movies? I mean who‘s to say? Certainly not me.

  • Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson to Return For New ‘The Hunger Games’

    [ad_1]

While the next Hunger Games movie is a prequel, it will be a sequel of sorts as well.

According to online reports (including in Variety), both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return for an appearance in the upcoming Hunger Games film Sunrise on the ReapingThe film takes place 24 years prior to the start of the main Hunger Games film franchise, which starred Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark.

The new film follows their future mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, who was played in those earlier films by Woody Harrelson. He will be played as a younger man in Sunrise on the Reaping by Joseph Zada.

READ MORE: The Best Movie Posters of 2025

Though I possess zero insider knowledge of the Sunrise on the Reaping film, I do possess the ability to look at Wikipedia. And on the Wiki page for Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping novel, it says (spoilers, potentially) that following the main events of its story…

In the epilogue, set after the original series, Haymitch tells Katniss and Peeta about his past…

Sunrise on the Reaping will be the sixth Hunger Games film. Like all but the first installment in the franchise, it is directed by Francis Lawrence. Its script is by Billy Ray, whose history with The Hunger Games also dates back to that first film from 2012.

To date, the five previous Hunger Games movies have grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. Here is the new Hunger Games’ official synopsis:

THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to open in theaters on November 20, 2026.

  • Steven Spielberg Teases Mysterious New UFO Movie With Cryptic Billboards

    [ad_1]

Steven Spielberg fans are clamoring for clues online after a handful of mysterious billboards promoting the legendary director’s forthcoming UFO film popped up in New York City and Los Angeles this week.

Spielberg’s UFO film isn’t due to hit theaters until next summer, but we’ve got our first taste of what the vibe will be, and so far it’s all very mysterious and spooky.

The billboards, one of which went up in Times Square, simply read, “ALL WILL BE DISCLOSED,” alongside Spielberg’s name and next to an image of an eye peeking through the reflective silhouette of a bird of some sort.

What does it all mean? Beats me! But I’ll be eagerly seated in the theater when the movie drops on June 2, 2026. I’m a sucker for early Spielbergian alien flicks such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, as well as his later sci-fi swings, from A.I. Artificial Intelligence to War of the Worlds. So far, this one appears it will be a callback to the darker, more eerie tone of his early forays into otherworldly science fiction.

READ MORE: The Best Sci-Fi Horror Films Not in the Alien Franchise

Based on a story by Spielberg himself, the screenplay was promisingly penned by the director’s longtime collaborator David Koepp, who also co-wrote the scripts for Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds.

In June, Koepp spoke to Deadline about his process collaborating with Sipelberg on the film, which wrapped shooting in the spring and the title for which has yet to be publicly revealed. The movie reportedly filmed under the code-name “Non-View.”

“What he does so brilliantly is he combines a vast spectacle with really honest human emotion—unlike, I think, any other director. It’s a very emotional experience, this movie. [Steven] wrote it up in a treatment, 40 or 50 pages, said, ‘Read this and tell me what you think.’ So I did and I said, ‘I think it’s great. I would do this and move that,’” Koepp shared.

“Then we started the process. So he came up and wrote the whole story, and I wrote the script. But he was constantly involved in the script, changing lines and things [like that]. He was the most involved on this as he’s been on any movie I’ve written for him to direct,” the screenwriter added.

John Williams did the musical score for the upcoming UFO film, which also features a stacked ensemble cast: Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell, Colman Domingo and Even Hewson are all set to star in the film.

  • Steven Spielberg UFO Movie Gets First Look, Potential Title

    [ad_1]

Steven Spielberg‘s mysterious UFO movie is officially beginning its marketing, showing off the first look of the film and potentially revealing its title.

What do we know about Steven Spielberg’s UFO movie?

A new billboard for Spielberg’s next movie has appeared in New York City. The billboard doesn’t show much aside from what looks to be a child’s eye flipped upside down. The billboard also teases the film’s release date, June 12, 2026, and either shows a brand new tagline, or the potential title of the movie.

The new tagline/title on the billboard notes “all will be disclosed,” leaning into the mysterious UFO/alien setting of the film. When flipped upside down, users noted that the billboard appears to show the mysterious character looking up.

Check out the new billboard for the movie below:

Spielberg’s untitled UFO movie comes from a screenplay written by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp, based on a story by the Oscar-winning filmmaker. The film’s star-studded cast includes Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Eve Hewson (The Perfect Couple), and Noah Robbins (Fly Me to the Moon).

It is produced by Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger for Amblin Entertainment, along with Chris Brigham. This marks Spielberg’s first sci-fi movie since directing the 2018 film adaptation of Ready Player One.

This will be Spielberg’s latest directorial feature project since helming 2022’s The Fabelmans, which was loosely based on his early life. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Williams), and Best Supporting Actor (Judd Hirsch).

  • Michael B. Jordan’s Thomas Crown Affair Adds Aubrey Plaza & More To Cast

    [ad_1]

The cast of Michael B. Jordan’s planned The Thomas Crown Affair adaptation is gaining some big names, including Aubrey Plaza.

Who has joined the cast of Michael B. Jordan’s The Thomas Crown Affair?

In a recent interview with Variety for their Awards Circuit podcast, Jordan revealed that Plaza, Ruth Negga, and Papa Essiedu have all joined the film. The trio of stars will join Jordan, Adria Arjona, Lily Gladstone, and Kenneth Branagh in the upcoming movie, making it one of the most star-studded casts for a film we’ve seen.

Currently, it’s unclear what everyone’s exact roles will be, outside of the fact that Jordan is set to star as the titular Crown.

“I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination,” said Jordan. “The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance. Ruth Negga is the queen. We’ve got an incredible cast — Aubrey Plaza, Kenneth Branagh, Paapa Essiedu.”

The upcoming heist movie is written by Drew Pearce and Wes Tooke, based on a story by the original movie’s writer Alan Trustman. It is produced by Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, along with Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff. Trustman has also signed on as an executive producer. Charles Roven has also joined the project as a producer.

The original film came out in 1968, and starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the leading roles. A 1999 remake of the movie was also released, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.

“An adventure of a millionaire playboy who steals a priceless work of art and then strikes up a fiery romance with the brilliant female insurance investigator who is on to his game,” a description of the 1999 movie reads.

  • Scream 7 Gets Great News from Matthew Lillard Following Test Screenings

    [ad_1]

Scream 7 has received some great news from Matthew Lillard.

Scream 7 arrives in United States theaters in February 2026 from Paramount Pictures. Directed by Kevin Williamson, the movie stars Lillard, Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Isabel May as Tatum Evans, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, Joel McHale as Mark Evans, and more.

What did Matthew Lillard say about Scream 7?

Speaking with ComingSoon in an exclusive interview, Lillard said that Scream 7 is “testing through the roof” following some test screenings.

He explained when asked about how it feels to come back to the Scream franchise and work with Williamson again, “It was awesome. The reality is that I remember where I was when I got the phone call. I remember in the park, exactly where it happened. Seeing the phone call from Kevin Williamson. We had seen each other at a party like three weeks beforehand at Mike Flanagan’s house. I was like, ‘What is he calling me for? That’s so strange.’ He was talking about going in and doing Scream 7. And even at the party, he was like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to go shoot the movie, I’m going to direct it.’ I was like, ‘That’s incredible.’ And he never mentioned anything. But we got on the phone and was like, ‘Do you want to come back and play with us?’ I was like, ‘You bastard, you could have said something like three weeks ago!’

“Look, I’m excited. What I’m most excited about is I think the movie, with Kevin involved and with Neve back — listen, I love the Radio Silence guys. I thought Melissa Barrera was fantastic. But I’m excited to see where this new iteration of Scream goes. The movie is testing through the roof, I think people are going to love it, and I think fans are going to lose their minds. It’s very fun.”

The official synopsis for Scream 7 reads, “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.”

Scream 7 will be released in United States theaters on February 27, 2026.

  • Jason Bateman Reacts to Fans Thirsting Over ‘Zootopia’s Nick Wilde: ‘Weird’

    [ad_1]

Jason Bateman is peripherally aware of your freaky Nick Wilde fanfics, ya filthy animals.

The Zootopia star, who voices the witty and charming fox in the film franchise, was recently asked about fans who thirst over his animated anthropomorphic character, and his response was a mix of concern and pride.

Chatting with entertainment website vt. during the Zootopia 2 press cycle, Bateman and co-star Ginnifer Goodwin participate in a true or false segment, during which Goodwin asked him about his character’s, um, sex appeal among certain fans.

“Nick Wilde has a Reddit thread full of people debating whether he’s hot or not,” Goodwin posed, to which Bateman confirmed, “This is true. My daughters told me this. It’s very weird. I guess it’s flattering.”

“Where did it come from though? I guess, are they saying the fox itself is handsome?” the actor continued.

When the interviewer clarified it’s a combination of “the attitude, the voice and the eyes,” Bateman smirked and agreed, as did Goodwin and fellow co-star Ke Huy Quan.

In a separate interview with ScreenRant, both Bateman and Goodwin were asked about WildeHopps, a popular fan ship — which is when fans fantasize about two fictional characters being together romantically, even if they’re aren’t canonically a couple — between Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps.

There are entire fanfics, social media pages, Reddit threads and even fan-made webcomics (including a particularly controversial comic titled I Will Survive, infamously known among fans as the “Zootopia abortion comic” — I’m not kidding) dedicated to the pair’s unofficial relationship.

While Bateman wasn’t aware specifically of the whole WildeHopps phenomenon before, he sure is now.

Meanwhile, Goodwin isn’t “sure how I feel about” the ship or fans who are convinced Nick would be the “perfect boyfriend.” “It’s very confusing for me,” she joked.

While the concept may be confusing for its lead stars, Nick Wild and Judy Hopps are hardly the first anthropomorphic animated animal characters to spark the flames of obsession among some fans, and they certainly won’t be the last.

Some popular anthro characters often considered sexy or attractive among adult fans include fellow Disney fox Robin Hood, The Bad Guys’ Mr. Wolf, Lola Bunny from Space Jam (OK, valid) and Shadow the Hedgehog. (I guess it doesn’t hurt that the latter is voiced by Keanu Reeves in the third Sonic movie. They knew what they were doing there.)

Zootopia 2 is now playing in theaters nationwide.

  • Macaulay Culkin Has a Great Idea for a ‘Home Alone’ Sequel

    [ad_1]

Home Alone is a classic for good reason. The 1990 Christmas movie is a staple during the holidays thanks to its cozy setting, hilarious hi-jinks and nostalgic atmosphere, as well as fantastic performances from a stacked cast including Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Catherine O’Hara, John Heard and, of course, Macaulay Culkin.

The former child star even has an idea for a potential modern Home Alone sequel, and honestly, it’s not too bad.

Variety reports that during a recent appearance on his A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin tour, the actor revealed his clever proposal for a sequel, sharing he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to reprising his iconic childhood role, though it would have to be done “just right” to work.

“I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out … [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in, and he’s the one setting traps for me,” Culkin revealed.

“The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” Culkin added of his elevator pitch, saying his character would have to “‘get let back into his son’s heart’ kind of deal.”

While diehard fans of the first two films would likely enjoy seeing Culkin back in action as Kevin McCallister, it doesn’t seem like director Chris Columbus is too eager to return to the McCallister family.

“I think Home Alone really exists as a … you know, not as this timepiece, but it was a very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,” Columbus told Entertainment Tonight back in August.

“I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone, yeah,” he added.

  • Kraken Trailer: Fearsome Sea Monster Is Unleashed in Horror Movie

    [ad_1]

Samuel Goldwyn Films has shared the official trailer for Kraken, the upcoming Norwegian monster horror movie. It is currently expected to make its U.S. debut sometime next year.

“In the film, Johanne is a marine biologist who is doing research on a fish farm in Vangsnes, a rural community located by the fjord, when she encounters several strange occurrences. Along with the brutal deaths of two local teenagers, all signs are pointing to the deep fjord; can there be more to the depths than the eye can see?” reads the official synopsis. “At the bottom of Norway’s deepest fjord rests a mythical monster as large as a mountain, with a myriad of arms ready to crush and devour anything they can grab.”

Check out the Kraken trailer below (watch more trailers):

What happens in the Kraken trailer?

The video introduces a marine biologist who investigates the brutal deaths of two local teenagers, which are somehow connected to the fjord. The trailer also teases how the monster was made by a greedy corporation that disrupted the fjord’s ecosystem for the sake of making profits. The ensemble cast includes Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Jenny Evensen, and Steinar Klouman Hallert.

Kraken is directed by Pål Øie, with Vilde Eide writing the film’s screenplay. The suspense action thriller is produced by John Einar Hagen and Einar Loftesnes, with Sveinung Golimo serving as an executive producer. Also leading the creative team is Sjur Aarthun, who has taken on the role of the film’s cinematographer and editor.

  • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ May Be the Final ‘Avatar’ After All

    [ad_1]

James Cameron has made three Avatar movies to date, and if it was up to him, he’d make more of them for years and years. He’s previously said he intends to direct a fourth and fifth Avatar movie, and he’s even suggested he has ideas for a sixth and seventh movie beyond those — although at 71 years old, it might be wishful thiknking to imagine he might be around and productive enough to make four more  of these things.

But Avatar movies cost a ton of money to make and if they don’t perform, the fate of the franchise could be in jeopardy. During a wide-ranging interview on The Town podcast, Cameron conceded that there is a world (not called Pandora, obviously) where the new Avatar: Fire and Ash is the final entry in the franchise.

“I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money,” Cameron said. “The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?”

READ MORE: James Cameron Says His Spider-Man Is The Greatest Movie He Never Made

Cameron shot most of the live-action and motion-capture footage for the second and third Avatars simultaneously; that’s not true of the next movies. Likewise, the second film, Avatar: The Way of Water, left a lot of unresolved storylines to continue in Avatar: Fire and Ash. In contrast, Fire and Ash has a lot fewer cliffhangers according to Cameron.

“There is one open thread, and if it ends there theatrically, I’ll write a book,” Cameron said on The Town. (James Cameron Avatar books sound kind of great, to be honest.)

Unless he changes his plans, Cameron committing to one Avatar really means committing to two Avatars, because he has said Avatars and are meant to go together like The Way of Water and Fire and Ash  which also means committing most of his 70s to making these things. It also means 20th Century Studios (AKA Disney) would be committing hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars on these twin projects. After The Way of Water, I assumed Cameron would be making these movies until he merged with the Tree of Souls some day. Now … I’m not so sure.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to open in theaters on December 19. After that … only Eywa knows.
