    Broccoli City Fest returns to the nation’s capital this weekend for two huge days of music.

    Broccoli City Fest returns to the nation’s capital this weekend for two huge days of music.

    This year marks the very first time the festival will be held at Audi Field in Southwest D.C.

    “It’s really exciting to be at this new venue,” festival co-founder Jermon Williams told WTOP. “You think of the growth over the years from when we started at The Bullpen then over to St. Elizabeth then over to RFK (Stadium) and FedEx (Field), then back to RFK the last two years. So moving over to Audi Field has really been about enhancing the fan experience. We wanted to revolutionize and redefine what it meant to experience a festival.”

    While he remains grateful to Events DC for the recent years spent on the RFK Stadium’s grounds in Northeast, Audi Field offers the festival plenty of new opportunities from both a production and amenities standpoint.

    “Audi Field is state of the art and we’re actually able to utilize the stadium and the perimeter around the stadium,” Williams said. “The Jumbotron, those big screens, being able to set up the festival so the experience is comparable to an award show where you’re seeing the interaction of the talent backstage. … Also just the facilities, providing our patrons with air-conditioned bathrooms and seating — I don’t think we’ve had a seating option in 11 years.”

    It kicks off with a pre-party on Friday at Echostage hosted by nine-time Emmy nominee Issa Rae.

    “She’s hosting and we’re super excited about that,” Williams said. “Anybody can go.”

    The official two-day music festival arrives on Saturday with three-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion headlining a star-studded lineup of PartyNextDoor, Lil Yachty & The Concrete Family, Fridayy and Teezo Touchdown, all hosted by Desi Banks, Funny Marco, Bryson Tiller, Trapsoul Karaoke and introductions by Rae.

    As if that wasn’t enough, Sunday brings a second day of music headlined by four-time Grammy nominated rapper Gunna and this year’s Best New Artist Grammy winner Victoria Monét on a stacked bill with rising stars like Sexyy Red, Key Glock and many more, all hosted by Joe Kay of Soulection Radio.

    How does Broccoli City always have a knack for finding “the next big thing” of artists?

    “It starts with us just being fans of music culture in general,” Williams said of his fellow co-founders Marcus Allen and Brandon McEachern. “When you’re a fan there’s that natural desire to discover new music for me. I think also having a great team that shares in that passion, a younger great team, because now we’re able to get real-time advice and insight on new artists. Beyond your headlining acts it’s always about how you’re filling out your lineup.”

    As a result, attendance has grown along with the festival’s reputation over the past decade.

    “I would go back to the precursor to Broccoli City Fest, which was an Earth Day block party we did in L.A. called Global Cooling which had Kendrick Lamar as an opening act, we did 500 or 600 people there,” Williams said. “Fast forward to B.C. Fest, the first iteration in 2013 we ended up doing 5,000, then 2016 jumped to about 13,000, then in 2018 to about 30,000. … This year we’re looking at 25,000 each day, so 50,000 total, so we’re super excited.”

    As The Associated Press’ music writer, Maria Sherman has seen more than 40 concerts during the first half of 2024. Here are some picks for the best shows … so far, excluding any one-off performances that cannot be repeated, and where you too can catch these artists.

    Bad Bunny, “The Most Wanted Tour”

    March 14, Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena

    Bad Bunny’s show begins with a symphony, transitioning into the unmistakable strings of his monster hit, “Monaco.” “The Most Wanted Tour” highlights El Conejo Malo’s fifth solo album “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” (“Nobody Knows What Will Happen Tomorrow”) and his past reggaetón hits, too.

    HIGHLIGHT: There is one moment that can only be described as equine.

    OPENER: When you’re one of the biggest artists on the planet, do you really need an opener? Bad Bunny didn’t.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: This particular run of shows has come to an end, but here’s a reminder to catch him next time he’s in town.

    Olivia Rodrigo, “GUTS World Tour”

    April 5, New York’s Madison Square Garden

    Rodrigo’s spirited punky-pop warms an arena, as does her irreverent charms and Disney-informed dancing. If women performing their rage has fallen out of vogue, Rodrigo has brought it back, full force.

    HIGHLIGHT: For the fans of her big-hearted ballads — in one moment, she’s lifted into the air and circles the arena in a purple crescent moon to slow things down.

    OPENER: The Breeders — fronted by the Pixies’ Kim Deal — legends of ’90s college radio and indie rock. There’s something completist about hearing an arena discover “Cannonball” for the first time, a song that no doubt inspired Rodrigo’s music.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Rodrigo heads back to the U.S. this month with a new opener, the U.K. hyperpop producer PinkPantheress, before the Breeders return for two final nights in Los Angeles.

    Brutalismus 3000, “AMERIKATRÄUME”

    April 11, New York’s Knockdown Center

    Every generation gets the Crystal Castles it deserves. Or in less niche language: This Berlin duo brings humor to their music, which veers from hyperactive techno to German Neue Deutsche Welle in their acquired-taste electronica. The shows are sweaty, and no matter your age, you will be the oldest person in attendance.

    HIGHLIGHT: The duo samples Dido’s soft-pop hit “White Flag,” while waving a white flag. It works.

    OPENER: The techno-punk LustSickPuppy, whose abrasive rave music is presented as a kind of nightmarish clown show.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Brutalismus will be hitting a few festivals in Europe this summer and fall.

    Nicki Minaj, “Pink Friday 2 World Tour”

    May 1, New York’s Barclays Center

    She will run on club time, and she will not disappoint. Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday 2” is almost a retrospective of her chart-toppers, shifting alter-egos with incredible ease.

    HIGHLIGHT: At this particular show, Minaj brought out Cyndi Lauper to duet “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” after 1 a.m.

    OPENER: Monica has joined Minaj for this tour, and in Brooklyn, Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa opened the show.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Minaj is hitting the European festival circuit this summer, then heading back to the U.S. in September.

    Sum 41, “Tour of the Setting Sum”

    May 6, New York’s Brooklyn Paramount

    Canadian pop-punk band Sum 41 has called it quits — and they’re going out in a blaze of glory, a farewell tour that has the immediacy of their youth.

    HIGHLIGHT: Sum 41 does not want to exit quietly — they prove their endurance with an explosive set, fireworks and mosh pits and all. There’s also a giant, blow-up skull.

    OPENER: The Interrupters, a ska-punk band that revitalized the genre, are worth arriving early for. At future dates, Sum 41 will be joined by Gob, Pup, Neck Deep and the Bronx.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Sum 41 is zigzagging across Europe and North America through early 2025.

    Megan Thee Stallion, “Hot Girl Summer Tour”

    May 21, Madison Square Garden

    Not every artist can sell out Madison Square Garden on her first tour, but Megan Thee Stallion is not every artist. On her stage, Megan is an athlete and a dancer who delivers her fierce bars with an incredible crispness.

    HIGHLIGHT: “WAP” is a can’t miss moment, of course — particularly if Cardi B makes a surprise appearance, like she did at MSG.

    OPENER: Tennessee rapper GloRilla, who was most recently featured on the great, braggy “Accent” from the headliner’s third album, “Megan.”

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Europe will get to catch her in July, before she heads back home for a few festivals.

    The Rolling Stones, “Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds”

    May 23, East Rutherford, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium

    The Rolling Stones ran through 60 years of hits across two hours, including cuts from their first album of new material in nearly two decades, “Hackney Diamonds.”

    HIGHLIGHT: When it comes to The Rolling Stones, the entire show is the highlight — but for this audience, it was likely the rollicking rendition of “Wild Horses.”

    OPENER: The soulful Jon Batiste, an award-show staple for a reason.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: The Stones’ North American tour continues through July.

    George Strait

    June 8, MetLife Stadium

    They call him the King of Country for a reason. Live, George Strait can transform his one-off stadium shows into a honky-tonk; he performs with a big band and a lot of heart.

    HIGHLIGHT: The closest a person can get to levitation is singing along to “Amarillo by Morning” in a stadium of tens of thousands.

    OPENER: Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town, with Stapleton joining Strait for a new song called “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame.”

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Strait has a two more stadium dates in July — in Detroit and Chicago — and another in December, in Las Vegas.

    Governors Ball: Chappell Roan, Sexyy Red, SZA, Peso Pluma

    June 7-9, New York’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park

    Summer festivals across the United States tend to have similar lineups. Governors Ball, arriving early in the season, sets the tone.

    HIGHLIGHT: Now is the time to run, don’t walk, to see Chappell Roan. And learn the “Hot to Go” dance.

    OPENER: Sexyy Red’s frisky rap is hard to deny.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: Many of these artists will be hitting festivals in North American and Europe this summer. In fact, if you want to catch SZA, Sexyy Red and Chappell Roan in one go, consider Lollapalooza in August. Pluma is currently on his “Éxodo Tour” across North America, running through October.

    CLAMM

    Feb. 18, Melbourne, Australia’s Northcote Social Club

    In the search for thrilling, cathartic underground music — particularly of the indie variety — look no further than the rich scene of Melbourne, Australia. CLAMM, the punk trio, brings a controlled aggression to their live show. It is ferocious noise punk that hits like inhaling hand sanitizer — stinging alert their audience with clever agitation.

    HIGHLIGHT: Later this month, CLAMM will release a new record, “Disembodiment.” Live, they’ve begun performing the chant-along opening cut, “Change Enough.”

    OPENER: At this particular show, the Aussie indie band Scott and Charlene’s Wedding and the rapper Mulalo. A genre-diverse club show is a life-affirming club show.

    SEE IT YOURSELF: CLAMM are headed to Europe for a series of dates this July, and back to Australia in August.

    Everyone has been on our girl Megan Thee Stallion for every little thing, and with her newest self-titled album, MEGAN, she continues to shut all the haters down. With what she has gone through these past couple of years, we can’t help but always want to support our girl, and you know what? She makes it really, really easy to love her, especially with this newest album.

    So, we heard a couple of songs from MEGAN before its release, ‘BOA,’ ‘HISS,’ and ‘Cobra,’ which set up what was expected from the album, and we instantly knew we wouldn’t be disappointed. It doesn’t matter if you hit shuffle, click a random one, or start with the first one on the album; this album will be your fave release of the year. With this album, we have 15 brand-new tracks, and as we said, it was hit after hit after hit.

    We just had a lot of fun while listening to MEGAN; we went from dancing to crying to dancing again. Which made it harder when picking our faves, but honestly, we can’t stop listening to ‘BOA,’ ‘Where Them Girls At,’ ‘Moody Girl,’ ‘Mamushi (feat. Yuki Chiba),’ and ‘Otaku Hot Girl,’ but don’t tell the rest of the tracks. And though we weren’t surprised at the Anime references, we were still shocked at the beginning of ‘Otaku Hot Girl,’ if you haven’t listened to it and are a Jujutsu Kaisen fan, you’re gonna love it. We also really liked the diverse collabs she had on the album; we love hearing familiar voices, as well as falling in love with people we might not be familiar with.

    Megan Thee Stallion Proved Once More She Really Is the Anime It Girl

    On June 28, 2024, Megan Thee Stallion released her third studio album, Megan, which predictably took off all over the internet. One song in particular among the album’s sixteen tracks made anime and manga fans everywhere perk up their ears—and that’s track seven, “Otaku Hot Girl.”

    Megan Thee Stallion has never made a mystery of her love for anime and manga, so much so that she’s known for posting pictures of her cosplaying popular characters from her favorite shows and fans throw anime plushies on the stage at her concerts. She even hosted the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2024.

    And as it happens pretty much every time a woman expresses a passion for something that is considered to be a hobby reserved for men—as if that’s even a thing—she has been met with some criticism among all the love and adoration, with some ignorant people accusing her of being a fake fan as if she hasn’t time and time again mentioned this particular art form in her music. 

    “Otaku Hot Girl” silences all those critiques in perfect Megan Thee Stallion style, with a song where anime references are an integral part of the lyrics—or better yet, the real heart of the song. So here’s a complete breakdown of them all, to truly get just how brilliant they are.

    The intro and sampling

    It all starts before the song even begins. The intro samples the music that plays during the mid-episode commercial breaks in Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the most popular shōnen of recent years—adapted from the manga of the same name by Gege Akutami—and also one of Megan Thee Stallion’s favorites. 

    There will be plenty more references to JJK throughout the song, with another one being right in the intro with a spoken bit by actor Adam McArthur, who voices the anime’s protagonist Yuki Itadori in the English dub. He reprises a line spoken by Yuuji during the first season of the show, changing it so that it doesn’t mention actress Jennifer Lawrence but “Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion”.

    “Can’t touch me like Gojo”

    The chorus opens up with a line that has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it, “Ay, can’t touch me like Gojo”. It’s yet another reference to Jujutsu Kaisen and arguably its most popular character, Satoru Gojo, known in-universe as the strongest sorcerer currently alive. To make pages and pages of explanations short, what makes Gojo so strong is his cursed technique, called Limitless, which essentially manipulates and distorts space. 

    Anything that approaches Gojo slows down continuously and never reaches him unless he decides he wants to be touched, and Megan Thee Stallion says that she’s exactly like him—nothing hits her unless she wants it to.

    “White wig on, bitch, I’m finna go Gojo”

    Satoru Gojo’s looks are iconic, with his head of white hair being immediately recognizable both on the page and on screen and his blue eyes—which hold another element of what makes him so strong, the famed Six Eyes—famously drowning all of Studio MAPPA’s animation budget, as fans like to joke.

    “N- bow down when I pop out like Sukuna / Eatin’ these rap bitches, that get me booted up / Switchin’ my flow up, it feel like it’s two of us / If I let Tina out, that’s a coup de grâce”

    Ryomen Sukuna is the great big villain of Jujutsu Kaisen—a sorcerer from the Heian era so strong and so ruthless that he became a cursed spirit known as the “King of Curses”. Skunk’s fame is so terrible and widespread in the jujutsu world that pretty much all characters fear him to some degree, which is what Megan Thee Stallion is evoking in the first line.

    Plus Sukuna is always lounging around like he’s on a throne, and I’m sure he expects people to bow down to him (MAPPA)

    Then she continues with a reference to both the way Sukuna found himself sharing a body with Yuki Itadori—aka Yuji eating more and more of Sukuna’s cursed fingers—and also probably to what is speculated to be Sukuna’s cursed technique, which fans suspect could be something that has to do with cooking and eating food.

    Finally, she also references the fact that there are indeed two people inside Yuji Itadori’s body—one being Yuji and one being Sukuna, who doesn’t come out often but wreaks some serious havoc those times he does.

    “Sexy jutsu, I feel like Naruto”

    Naruto is a pillar of the shōnen genre and another one that Megan Thee Stallion has previously referenced in her work. In this particular line, she’s mentioning one of the most famous abilities of the show’s protagonist Naruto Uzumaki, which he actually created himself—the sexy jutsu, with which he transforms into a beautiful woman so that he can prank or distract other men.

    “Fighting demons in my head like I’m Itadori”

    Back to Jujutsu Kaisen, Megan Thee Stallion is once more referencing Yuji Itadori and the fact that he shares his body—and his mental space—with Sukuna, a literal curse, who often taunts him from inside his own head.

    “I’m not finna argue with a Sasuke avi’”

    The “avi” is an avatar, in this case of Sasuke Uchiha, another major character in Naruto whom Megan Thee Stallion has already mentioned in some of her previous songs. In this particular line, though, she is referencing how Sasuke, who is a character loved far and wide, is also particularly liked by anime elitists or newbies—the same people who question whether or not she is a real fan and with whom she has no interest discussing since she doesn’t need their approval to validate her love for anime.

    “He don’t run from me / ‘Cause he wanna get caught in my domain expansion”

    Probably my favorite reference of the entire song, Megan Thee Stallion is once more drawing from Jujutsu Kaisen. This time it’s the domain expansion, which is the most powerful technique a sorcerer can learn and one that very few of them, like Satoru Gojo and Sukuna, can master—the domain expansion creates a barrier that is infused with the sorcerer’s cursed technique, improving their performance and guaranteeing them a hit on their enemies as long as they stay inside the domain.

    “Hoes want my technique, couldn’t be like me / With a Sasuke sharingan”

    The final anime reference of the song returns to Naruto and Sasuke, who has inherited his family’s powerful eye technique, the Sharingan. This technique grants the user a wide range of abilities, which can be broadly divided into seeing other people’s chakra and copying their techniques and also hypnotise other people to do what the Sharingan user compels them to.

    Since the Sharingan can’t be learned but it’s something that people usually inherit at birth, Megan Thee Stallion is using it to remark how everything about her, from her rap style to her persona, can’t be replicated—she is simply born with it.

    From the moment Megan Thee Stallion crowned summer 2019 “Hot Girl Summer,” each subsequent summer has fought to earn its own moniker. And just before the solstice, Charli XCX came to claim the crown with her album BRAT. The very instant the neon green album cover made its way to our Spotify feeds, it was clear it would be an instant classic.

    And now, after sitting with the album for a few weeks — and blasting it through my headphones like armor against the heatwave — it’s undeniable that these timeless tracks will define summer 2024. So everyone, like your pilot after a flight, I’d like to be the first to welcome you to BRAT summer.


    Let’s be clear: BRAT summer is an extension of the summer of
    gay pop. Look at the charts, and you’ll discover that many of this summer’s favorite earworms are made by and for the gays. Happy Pride from the queer community! Songs like “Good Luck Babe!” by our favorite performer Chappell Roan [who we interviewed here!] and “LUNCH” by alt-pop queen Billie Eilish are proudly queer anthems that aren’t going anywhere all summer and beyond. And while Charli isn’t queer herself, she’s a cornerstone of the queer music community. Her impact on the gay music scene cannot be ignored — she did the soundtrack to the lesbian cult film Bottoms, for goodness sake. And that’s to say nothing of her years making gay pop bangers before Jojo Siwa crowned this the summer of the genre.

    Think of it like the parents who get citizenship in a country because their children were born there. For many queer folks, Charli is mother, and her music is directly influenced by and produced for LGBTQIA+ audiences. She follows a tradition of other hyperpop divas who have become icons in the queer community. Madonna. Kylie Minogue. Lady Gaga. Charli XCX.

    Though for too long she was relegated to “gay famous” — aka only a household name to queer people and mostly unknown to mainstream pop charts — everyone has finally caught on. So if you’re new to Charli standom, welcome to a party so fun you’ll never want to leave.

    BRAT is Charli’s seminal work — no wonder this is the record drawing the most public intrigue and influence of her career. She teased the album for months. With interviews, campaigns, DJ shows, and even announcing a joint tour with Troye Sivan, Charli was telling us to get ready for BRAT summer for months. For a while, some even wondered if it would live up to the hype. Luckily, it has exceeded it.

    In her cover story interview for THE FACE magazine, she described
    BRAT as “irresistible club pop made by a dyed-in-the-wool party girl.” And she delivered on her promise. BRAT is infectious and instantly timeless. It’s party fodder that’s surprisingly poignant. It’s not just an album, it’s a lifestyle. And everybody’s going to be living it all summer long.

    Already,
    BRAT has brought back partying. Even The New York Times has caught on — they recently published an article on partying in the new age. It included items like social media etiquette and not taking off your shoes in someone’s apartment. Overall, it feels like a treatise on BRATty behavior.

    Bring back indie sleaze

    Every year since the pandemic, fashion blogs have been predicting the return of indie sleaze. This Tumblr-era aesthetic reigned during the height of the early 2010s party girl era. It was characterized by cigarettes, ripped tights, and smudged eyeliner. It was embodied by Tumblr icons like Alexa Chung and the rest of the “rockstar girlfriend” set. And, in recent years, many of its markers have returned.
    Arctic Monkeys put out a new album. Everyone is preoccupied with It-Girls again. But Indie Sleaze as an aesthetic has failed to regain its grip on the youth culture.

    However, BRAT might be singlehandedly bringing back that vibe. It makes me want to put on a crop top and buy a choker. It makes me yearn for American Apparel days and wearing Doc Martens to the club. The #CleanLook aesthetic is out. Dressing for the most feral night of your life? In. Call it inner child healing and go full tilt into Tumblrcore.

    Add one more accessory to your outfit before leaving the house

    Allegedly, Coco Chanel once said: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” Clearly she was not a BRAT. Instead, add an accessory to your look each time you leave the house. Being a BRAT is about being over the top. It’s about buying the rhinestone and bedazzled tourist caps when you’re on vacation. It’s about giant sunglasses at night. It’s not just about accessorizing, it’s about
    over-accessorizing.

    My rule of thumb is to pick a go-to accessory and exaggerate it as much as possible. For example, if you love a funky earring, commit to the biggest, most outrageous earrings you can find. Personally, I adore rings, so this summer, I’m literally stacking every ring I own every day. If my hands weigh as much as my head, I’m doing it right.

    Don’t sleep in your makeup — but make it look like you did

    The cardinal sin in beauty is sleeping in your makeup. You run the risk of clogging your pores, activating or worsening acne, causing premature aging, drying out your skin barrier, and irritating your dermis. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You’re also missing out on all the potential benefits of your nighttime skincare routine when your skin needs the TLC the most.

    Being a BRAT might be about being booked and busy, but it’s also about keeping yourself at your best to do it all over again tomorrow. So, no, don’t use BRAT summer as an excuse to sleep in your makeup, but use it as inspiration to
    look like you slept in your eyeliner.

    I’m talking thick brows, smudged eyeliner, smoky shadow, and finger blush. Apply with no caution whatsoever, and you have the look.

    Say yes — to everything.

    Consider that one Jim Carrey movie
    Yes Man. When he’s bound to say yes to everything, hilarity ensues. In real life, the same is true. Doing it for the plot, as the kids say, can open doors you never expected. In the winter, I’m protective of my boundaries and selective about what I do. In the summer, I’ll take any opportunity to be outside.

    An extension of this rule is keeping the conversation open. Don’t just ask people what they’re doing, ask them if you can tag along. You’ll be surprised how often they tell you that the more, the merrier.

    Don’t flake

    Saying yes to plans is a commitment. But it’s not very BRATty to cancel at the last minute. Once you affirm plans, respond to a Partiful invite, or slide up on someone’s story about a house party, you’re bound to it. Even if you only go for a moment, show your face, and leave, it’s better than flaking completely.

    Dance!

    In the song “girl, so confusing” (not the version with Lorde, but we’ll get there), Charli says: “Think you should come to my party and put your hands up!” The queen has spoken — y’all better put your hands up.

    It might seem like a given since we’re talking about parties, but people don’t want to clock in and dance anymore. It’s time to break the cycle. This summer, let’s make a pact to actually dance at parties. No more standing on the walls, trying to look cool and nonchalant. Being a BRAT is about being chalant.

    Think Troye Sivan in his icon run of music videos last year. I want to channel “Get Me Started” energy to every song on
    BRAT. You don’t have to have full choreo, but let the music move you, for goodness sake! That’s what it’s for.

    Especially if they’re playing throwback 2000s and 2010s recession-pop

    BRAT at the club (you should be), it’s best paired with recession pop. Play Charli mixed with the greats and their own pop bangers. BRAT is influenced by the music of the past decade. And considering Cahrli has been making music that whole time, BRAT is an homage to this era. The best way to pay it respect is by

    Pregame with sad girl music

    A BRAT is complicated. They contain multitudes. They’re complex and layered. Behind the party girl exterior is a deep yearning that can only be soothed by sad girl music. If you’re watching
    Lana Del Rey’s Coachella 2024 performance on YouTube before going out, congratulations, you’re a BRAT.

    I personally find that starting the pregame with Phoebe Bridgers, moving on to Billie Eilish, and ending with Charli sets the perfect mood. You have to work your way up to Charli. You have to emotionally earn it.

    Wired headphones forever

    The above is true when you’re alone, too. Listening to music in your headphones, it better be either La Del Rey or Charli this summer. But the headphones themselves matter. Until they make neon green skins for your bulky wireless Airpods, wired earphones are the official choice for a BRAT summer. Whether you choose the classic Apple earphones or trendy ones like the Koss vintage-inspired earphones,
    as long as they have a wire, you’re good.

    Ponder the meaning of life

    “I think about it all the time, that I might run out of time,” ponders Charli on BRAT. “My career feels so small in the existential scheme of it all,” she ends the song, “i think about it all the time,” before leading into a song of the summer, “365.” Clearly, her career means something — both to her and the culture. And it’s a sign to us all. It’s normal to ponder the meaning of life, to spiral at the club, to have an existential crisis in the car on the way home. As long as you show up and dance.

    Take digitals. Post the good, bad, and the ugly

    Every other year comes a photo trend. During Tumblr, it was the Polaroid camera. For the past few years, it’s been the disposable. Now, it’s the digital cameras. While we don’t have to bring back Facebook albums compiling every photo from every night, I shudder to recall that dark time, digital cameras offer both whimsy and functionality. Just don’t dilly-dally before sharing with your friends.

    It’s also about being real online and offline. There’s no room for shame or regret when you’re a BRAT. So post every pic, even if your eye is half closed — in fact, that makes you seem cooler. Like, wow, you’re too busy living your super cool and awesome life to stress about your photos. And I’ll be in the likes of all your photo dumps and stories because BRATs support BRATs.

    No beef. Work it out on the remix

    Undoubtedly, the most viral storyline from the BRAT rollout came a few weeks later with a remix. Many had already speculated that the song was about Cahrli and Lorde’s purported beef. After years in the industry, the two kept being compared to each other and Charli has spoken out about these comparisons before. While they weren’t fighting it out on Instagram Live, the fans hyped up this so-called rivalry. It finally seemed like Charli was addressing it in “girl, so confusing,” a song straight out of the
    Barbie soundtrack (which she also worked on).

    So, imagine all of our surprises when Lorde and Charli worked it out on the remix. Released days after the initial album, “The girl, so confusing version with Lorde” was a surprisingly vulnerable and completely powerful move to end this alt-girl beef. Lorde hopped on the track to talk about her insecurities and the defense mechanisms we make to protect ourselves and hurt other people. I almost cried to that heavy pop beat. And Charli wouldn’t have it any other way.

    In a world filled with nonsensical (though entertaining) feuds like Kendrick and Drake, this summer is about working it out on the remix. It’s about supporting other BRATs. And inviting that girl you think hates you to your party. Truly iconic.

Just a little under five years ago she was performing the same song for a sold-out crowd at Warehouse Live, a venue that held around 1300 people in the ballroom. Friday evening, she returned to Houston, this time performing at her first or two sold-out shows in the 19,000 seat Toyota Center. The MC, dressed in a form fitting white jumpsuit made to mimic the scales of a snake, bounced across the stage while pointing out people in the pit below her.

    “I see a lot of familiar faces! I’m so happy to be home. Houston I love you.”

    The Hot Girl Summer Tour is the first headlining tour for hometown MC Megan Thee Stallion performing at 35 stops in North America and Europe with opener GloRilla. Upon announcement extra shows were added to Chicago, Atlanta, and here in Houston because of high demand. The announcement of sales happened amongst media speculation that the MC would not be able to sell out arenas and didn’t have the catalog for a tour of this magnitude. To that the MC had one response via twitter which she reiterated on stage Friday night.

    “This is a special night. This is night one of the motherfucking 100% sold out hottie tour in Houston, Texas. Y’all know what we’ve been through. I love y’all. I appreciate y’all. I respect y’all. And I’m grateful for y’all.”

    Megan Thee Stallion career trajectory is hard to comprehend, with the rapper first releasing music via Soundcloud in 2016 to now selling out arenas throughout the country. Since that time, she has experienced the incredible highs of stardom like creating music with Beyonce, picking up major brand deals for imprints like Revlon, racking up multiple awards and nominations including three Grammys, an appearing in movies and television. Those highs are accompanied by some lows, ranging from the typical artist’s experience to some extreme depths. While battling your original record label is run of the mill for an up-and-coming artist losing your mother/mentor/manager, being the victim in a high-profile shooting, and becoming a lightning rod for internet speculation and gossip is more than most people can handle. But handle it she has which is evident by the announcement of her new self-titled album and successful tour. Her show gives the same familiarity as that Warehouse Live showing from years ago but on a larger scale with Megan truly making fans feel her presence. Whether dancing alongside fans, stopping the show to sign autographs, or just cracking jokes with the audience, Megan exudes an infectious charm that keeps her people coming back for more.

    Megan is undeniably Houston and, after running through “Southside Royalty” from her 2022 album Tramazine she brought out Lil Keke, Slim Thug and Bun B. They weren’t the only guests on the lineup as GloRilla returned to the stage to perform their latest single “Wanna Be” to the screaming crowd. The two both have energetic shows that truly complement each other, and the roar of the crowd echoed throughout the building when the two appeared onstage together. GloRilla’s opening offers the same appeal as Meg’s with the MC winning over the crowd with her personality alone. The MC ended her set with a dance off where members of her stage entourage laughed as they jigged across the stage.

    “Megan, I just want you to know that you are one of the realest ever,” GloRilla smiled as she walked away from the stage after their duet.

    Megan has experienced a lot since entering the world of entertainment. The tour is a display of not just what Megan has become over a brief period but glimpses into what more she is capable of as an artist, The Hot Girl Tour returns for its second night Saturday.

    The calendar has turned to June, which means Megan Thee Stallion is ready to usher in 2024’s Hot Girl Summer.

    The Grammy Award-winning rapper brought her headlining tour to Raleigh, North Carolina’s PNC Arena Tuesday night.

    Following GloRilla’s opening act, Megan performed a lineup including hits “HISS,” “Savage,” “Cobra” and “Body.”

    Atlanta officials were slowly repressuring the city’s water system Saturday after corroding water pipes burst in downtown and Midtown, forcing many businesses and attractions to close and affecting water service in area homes.

    The city was handing out cases of water and setting up portable toilets at several fire stations and first responders were checking high rise residences to see if the elderly or other vulnerable residents were OK.

    “Water is a valuable, critical resource and cities can’t function and lives can’t function without it,” Mayor Andre Dickens said during a news conference Saturday. “It’s absolutely at the top of our list.”

    On Friday, May 31, Eminem released his latest single, ‘Houdini,’ which is featured on his upcoming album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady,’ per Billboard.

    In the early hours of Friday morning, Em also released the official music video for ‘Houdini’ via YouTube. Furthermore, the video featured star-studded cameos from the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Pete Davidson.

    Despite the star-studded appearances, one figure who wasn’t featured in the video caught the attention of the masses.

    About a minute and eight seconds into the track, Em named dropped Megan by rapping:

    “If I was to ask for Megan Thee / Stallion if she would collab with me / Would I really have a shot at a feat?”

    Social media users reacted to Em’s bar about Meg in The Shade Room’s comment section. Many appeared conflicted about whether the rapper was showing Megan love by requesting a feature. Or, if he was dissing her with a double entendre of her being shot in her foot in 2020, per The Shade Room.

    Here’s What’s Recently Been Going Down With Meg

    Megan Thee Stallion has yet to publicly react to Eminem name-dropping her. As The Shade Room previously reported, earlier this week, the 29-year-old’s lawyers responded on her behalf to a harassment lawsuit filed against her in April.

    The lawsuit was filed by the rapper’s ex-photographer, Emilio Garcia, who accused Meg of having sex in front of him and creating a “hostile, abusive work environment,” per The Shade Room.

    Furthermore, the photographer alleged that Megan prohibited him from speaking out about his grievances before his payouts from her decreased, and he was wrongfully terminated.

    Meg’s lawyer initially responded by calling the lawsuit an “employment claim for money,” per The Shade Room.

    Then, earlier this week, Meg’s lawyers officially responded to the suit in a court filing, per The Shade Room. The attorneys asserted that Garcia is a “con artist” whose suit is “fabricated.”

    Additionally, the attorneys reportedly shared that they believe the suit was wrongly filed in California and are requesting the case be transferred to a federal court.

    In the words of Renee Rapp: “Can a gay girl get an amen?”


    In the song “Not My Fault,”
    Renee Rapp teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion on an unapologetically gay anthem for the major motion picture, Mean Girls: The Musical. The song starts with the now-iconic clip from the original movie in which Cadie confronts Janice with the accusation: “It’s not my fault you’re like, in love with me or something.”

    Since
    Mean Girls dropped in 2004, there have been many think pieces about Janice’s role as forming the caricature of early-2000s red-scare lesbian panic. That was the year after Madonna and Britney shocked the world by kissing on the VMAs stage. It was four years before Katy Perry solidified her stardom with her hit “I Kissed A Girl.”

    Sapphic stars had, of course, achieved fame and success before — in the 90s, having a k.d. Lang poster in your room was the equivalent of listening to
    Girl in Red (we’ll get to that) — but queerness was still othered. For better or worse, Glee wouldn’t toxify our airwaves until 2009. And queerness was something to be whispered about, especially sapphic relationships — which went either ignored or fetishized.

    Now, in 2024, having an explicitly queer song leading a major studio film shows a seismic sapphic shift. Janice is no longer at the fringes of the film’s plot. And the implications of having a lesbian play Regina George? Yes, a gay girl can get an amen from me.

    Renee Rapp is just one of the young, sapphic popstars gracing the airwaves today. In those toxic early-2000s, a popstar’s success depended on how well their sexuality could be marketed by and to men. Hindsight has us reckoning with the
    egregious objectification of Britney Spears and her peers in recent years. But now, with social media, the biggest popstars have more control over their image and have achieved success by unapologetically marketing to women — 2023 wasn’t the year of the girl for nothing.

    The biggest stars in the world are leveraging predominantly female audiences —
    Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and even male pop giants like Harry Styles. And now the queer girls are taking over by singing not just about girlhood, but explicitly about sapphic desire. Within this zeitgeist, they’re remaking what it means to be a girl for everyone. No longer is it about appealing to the male gaze, it’s about identifying with people who make you feel seen and follow your interests unapologetically. This message is resonating with the straights and sapphics alike. Particularly on TikTok, it’s causing some to realize they’re not as straight as they thought.

    From Gay-Famous to Mainstream-Famous

    There’s long been a category of celebs who are irrefutable icons in the queer space but who go largely ignored by the mainstream music crowd. Think Troye Sivan. He’s been gaymous since his first album,
    Blue Neighborhood. Close to a decade later, he’s finally broken through to the mainstream. Traversing from queer subculture to mainstream pop culture usually takes years. What’s exciting about the latest class of girls who like girls is that they’re starting their careers with mainstream recognition — and a lot of that is thanks to TikTok.

    From young artists coming out in the past few years to emerging artists branding themselves as queer from the get-go, queerness is no longer relegated to the sidelines.

    However, niche queer music communities are alive and well. It’s how “do you listen to
    Girl In Red” became code for asking if a girl was queer. And it’s why, on TikTok, algorithms are leading individuals to queer content creators and suddenly realizing they, too, are queer. “If TikTok is showing you this, you might be gay,” read a wave of videos during the pandemic. And for many people, TikTok was right. Perhaps this surge of sexual awakenings has something to do with a new generation looking for queer representation in music. And finally, finally, it’s here.

    Perhaps this is what Jojo Siwa was talking about when she declared in her now-notorious interview that she was the harbinger of “gay pop.” When she said in an interview that she “wanted to start a new genre … called ‘gay pop,’” she might have been onto something. She later clarified that she didn’t mean she invented the genre, but wanted to be part of brining it mainstream. “There’s so many gay pop artists … but I think that those gay pop artists do deserve a bigger home than what they have right now,” she said.

    Fortunately for Jojo Siwa, she’s getting what she wanted — gay pop artists are getting way bigger platforms. Unfortunately for Jojo Siwa, it’s not her.

    Femininomenons

    Take Coachella 2024. It might as well have been Pride. One of the hottest queer moments was the rise of Chappel Roan. Bard of bisexuals everywhere, Chappell Roan has been giving gay girls infectious pop hits since 2020, with “
    Pink Pony Club,” the lead single of her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

    After her Coachella set and her viral summer single “Good, Luck Babe!” — a song about a queer girl who leaves the singer for a man — Chappell is one of the biggest rising stars to emerge from the desert, the people’s princess. Roan’s album is full of soaring pop bangers that put queerness at the center. The opening track, “Femininomenon” is a neologism Chappell created that combines “feminine” and “phenomenon.” The songs that follow are about coming of age, coming into one’s queerness, and discovering one’s whole self — themes that have earned her a cultish fanbase and a viral
    Tiny Desk Concert, the hallmark of any true indie artist.

    Other
    femininomenons are shaking up the industry scene across all genres — both on and off stage. Billie Eilish has been a global megastar since she was only a teenager. After coming out as bisexual in 2023, Billie made headlines at Coachella for her undeniable queer energy. Having a Grammy-winning pop superstar be openly queer is a sure sign that the tide is changing. Especially since, after penning the song that defined girlhood last year — “What Was I Made For?”, which won Song of the Year at the Grammys for Barbie — her new album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, features songs like “Lunch” about queer desire.

    Billie isn’t the only established young female singer to explore queer themes in their music and videos. Singers like Madison Beer, who was discovered in 2012 at the age of 13, has since come out as bisexual and talked about songs on her new album that are inspired by relationships with women. And these go beyond the lyrics.

    Her newest single, “Make You Mine,” is accompanied by visuals inspired by emblematic bisexual film,

At this year’s Grammys, Bridgers issued a direct FU to the straight male gatekeepers of the industry, using her way with words to say: “the ex-president of the Recording Academy, Neil Portnow, said that if women want to be nominated and win Grammys, that they should “step up” … To him, I’d like to say, ‘I know you’re not dead yet, but when you are, rot in piss.’”

    Boygenius

    Comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, Boygenius is a collaborative project of Sapphic singers singing rock bangers. The 2024 Grammys saw them winning in traditionally male categories such as best rock song and best rock performance for their single “Not Strong Enough,” as well as best alternative album for their debut studio album,
    The Record.

    Ethel Cain

    Another for the sad, ex-Tumblr girls, Ethel Cain’s melancholy melodies are finally gaining mainstream attention. Ethel Cain’s character says Southern gothic fantasy of Hayden Anhedönia, a 24-year-old artist whose stage persona is much like character-based singers of yore — think Marina and the Diamonds. The world she creates in
    Preacher’s Daughter and her other work is similar to the dark fantasies of Lana Del Rey. And similarly, this world is about chasing freedom above all else.

    “I want some variation for the trans experience as depicted in trans art,” Anhedönia told
    Billboard in 2022. “Ethel Cain the character is trans, but I didn’t make it a big part of the story because to me, being transgender is kind of boring. It’s like, ‘I have brown hair, I’m transgender’ — it’s very ‘whatever,’ you know? Ultimately, it’s not about the identity itself, it’s about the freedom to be whatever you are.”

    MUNA

    MUNA is an indie-pop comprised of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson who have been gaymous since their

    debut album in 2017. Thanks to collaborations like “Silk Chiffon” with Phoebe Bridgers and features in queer films like
    Alex Strangelove, they’ve been reaching an increasingly mainstream audience with their infectious gay pop bangers.

    Remi Wolf

    With multiple viral hits under her belt and one of the most impressive voices on the pop scene, Remi Wolf is the coolest Gen Z stars out there. Her eclectic style, genre-bending sound, and energetic stage presence make her a certified superstar. And her indiscriminate use of pronouns in her music solidifies her as a bisexual superstar.

    Girl in Red

    Girl in Red used to be an IYKYK niche music act known pretty much only by girls who like girls. If she came up on your Spotify algorithm, it was trying to tell you something. But she has since exploded and become an indie-pop darling — even collaborating with pop princess, Sabrina Carpenter on “ You Need Me Now?”

    Madison Beer

    Like Billie, Madison’s latest phase feels more herself and unrestrained. A child of the Tumblr days, it’s no surprise that she’s drawn to queer ephemera like Jennifer’s Body. As she blossoms as a musician, let’s hope we hear more sapphic themes in her lyrics.

    Megan Thee Stallion Keeps Up Her Snake Motif With “BOA,” A Pro-Gwen Stefani, Anti-TikTok Single

    Either Megan Thee Stallion is in bed with the U.S. government, or she’s genuinely sick of TikTok and the low-grade “talent” it furnishes. Whatever the case, a noticeable portion of her latest snake-themed single (following “Cobra” and “Hiss”), “BOA,” takes aim at the app with lines like, “Bitch, your time up, why is you not clockin’ out?/Doin’ shit for TikTok (yeah), bitch, I’m really hip hop” and “I ain’t need to make no TikTok/Bitch, your time up.” Alas, those quick to write people (or things) off as being practically “over” expose themselves to what Megan’s frequent cohort, Cardi B, once said on “Champagne Rosé”: “They say my time is tickin’/These hoes is optimistic.”

    What’s more, considering that Megan recently trolled the likes of Nicki Minaj on “Hiss” for, among other things (like having a sex offender husband), being the sort of territorial rapper who insists there’s no space for other women in the rap game, these lyrics feel a bit hypocritical. But who can blame Megan, really, for attacking the upstarts on TikTok who have no polish whatsoever, let alone anything resembling freestyle prowess? Thus, as though to remind “TikTokers” what the real meaning of “tick tock” is, Thee Stallion samples from Gwen Stefani’s lead single (and her first as a solo artist) from 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby., “What You Waiting For?” 

    Throughout the original version of this signature song, Stefani famously chants, “Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock” in between saying such self-deprecating things as, “Take a chance you stupid ho” (a pretty standard part of any woman’s internal dialogue in a society that places all emphasis on looks and money). That’s essentially what Megan, as a devious video game character in The Curse of the Serpent Woman, is daring three teenage friends to do as they embark upon the task of (as Lana commands) playing a video game. And take a chance they do—on ignoring the very clear disclaimer at the beginning of the game that reads: “The way you die in the game is how you die in real life.” 

    Unfazed by the warning, Jayden (the player who got the game from the “dark web” in the first place) carries on, his two other friends joining him with mostly blasé interest…until the game actually gets started and the stakes are suddenly very high. Various intercut scenes of Megan in “alternate dimension”-style (a.k.a. video game-y) settings then ensue—you know, so as to be able to showcase her body-ody-ody in varying scantily-clad degrees. The most scantily-clad being perhaps when she’s wearing next to nothing…apart from a plug-looking hookup in her back while she’s set against, appropriately, a The Matrix-inspired backdrop.

    When she’s not doing that, she’s playing the “Serpent Woman” in question, killing these teenagers willy-nilly ‘cause, like Taylor said, “Don’t say I didn’t, say I didn’t warn ya.” Within the video game universe, Megan’s alter ego rides around on a giant boa constrictor, and also uses a Jafar-esque snake staff to vaporize one of the teens, searing a hole right into his stomach that almost compares to the one Helen Sharp (Godie Hawn) gets in Death Becomes Her

    As established at the beginning of the video, the narrative takes place in a late 90s/early 00s era (ergo, The Matrix-alluding visual), not just evidenced by the gaming equipment, but the set design of each teen’s room. The only thing missing from the girl’s room, perhaps, is a poster of someone like Enrique Iglesias. And, speaking of that last name, director Daniel Iglesias Jr. is sure to imbue the “BOA” video with plenty of slick POV shots to make the viewer occasionally feel like they’re playing the game too. Except with the benefit of not having to die the same way that these unfortunate teenage souls do. Though Jayden could have been finished off in a worse way than getting his face sat on by Megan. 

    As for the only female player/last woman standing of the trio, she’s already stopped playing the game, having grown bored enough to move on to tinkering with Snake (which was first released in 1997) on her Nokia. That doesn’t stop “Serpent Woman” from once again leaving her 0s and 1s realm long enough to approach the girl in her room and wield her boa to do what it does best: constrict. Coiling all the way around the girl’s torso and squeezing her until she explodes into bloody oblivion. 

    In short, Megan clearly isn’t hiding how much contempt she has for youths right now—particularly “TikTok teens.” But then, perhaps the underlying message is that some form of brain-draining, time-sucking apparatus—whether smartphones or video games—has existed in every era since the invention of the screen came to roost. Even so, Megan makes it apparent that TikTok appears to be the most nefarious and eye-rolling iteration to date. So it is that she directs her comment, “Bitch, your time up” not just, presumably, at Minaj (along with the lyric, “Post a picture, bitches call me mother/Now who’s sonnin’ who?,” which could be a reference to Minaj announcing, “All these bitches is my sons”), but at the app that has captured so many American hearts of a certain generation. Until now, as it faces an imminent ban.

    On May 6, the Hot Girl released her infectious “I Think I Love Her Freestyle,” a one-minute freestyle set to the backdrop of Gucci Mane’s iconic 2010 rap hit, for her new series, Megan Mondays.

     

    Donning a white “Girl” crop top, an iced-out chain, and red headphones, Megan went in on the beat, letting the world know just how dope of a rhymer she is.  

    “Show a new b**ch that ain’t Megan coded/ Show a beat I was on and ain’t rode it, if she think she the sh*t, I’m the colon,” the star, real name Megan Pete, rapped in one line of the buzzing song. 

    Later in the energetic freestyle, the Grammy winner gave a nod to legendary model Naomi Campbell and bragged about her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Southern University.

    In 2021, the “WAP” hitmaker graduated with her degree in health administration from the HBCU.

    “Catwalk, b**ch, I feel like Naomi/ The way I play n***as, I need me a Tony/ Good brain, graduated, top of my percentile,” she rapped with confidence and flair.

    The Hotties Are Buzzing About More Than Just The “Cobra” Rapper’s Latest Release

    On May 3, the hip-hop star unveiled the cover art for an upcoming project, reminiscent of a Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat video game cover for Playstation. Megan sported attire akin to the iconic Street Fighter character Chun-Li in the photo.

    “Are you ready to play,” the rapper captioned the unique cover art.

    Some fans wondered if it was another diss track geared at Nick Minaj, whom she previously took aim at in her January released freestyle titled, “Hiss.”

    Other users accused her of “copying” the Queens-bred femcee.

    “Definitely copying Nicki whether y’all say its “Anime” or not. We’ve seen this before and Onika is the father,” the netizen wrote. 

    Fans defending the Houston native said the artwork was a clear reference to the rapper’s love for the anime character Boa Hancock of One Piece, a popular Japanese anime series. 

    “Am I tweaking or is this a Boa Hancock reference from One Piece.”

    “IS THIS BOA HANCOCK COSPLAY? OH MEG!”

    Some users were eager to know if the project was a forthcoming single or album.

    Megan Thee Stallion first teased the tour on social media last week. The three-time Grammy winner is headed on a 31-city trek with Glorilla as a special guest. The Detroit gig on Saturday, May 18 is set for Little Caesars Arena at 7 p.m.

    The Hot Girl Summer Tour is Megan Thee Stallion’s first-ever headlining tour across the globe and we’ve been waiting patiently for this day since 2020 when “Savage” kept us hype during the pandemic.

    The international run kicks off on May 14 in Minneapolis and stops in Detroit, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Las Vegas, and more before hopping across the pond to Scotland, England, France, Germany, and Ireland.

    The tour announcement comes on the heels of Thee Stallion’s latest single “HISS” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February. It also became the first-ever solo female rap song to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, giving Megan the record for the biggest first week for a solo female rap song in history.

    It’s the second track released via Megan’s independent music and entertainment entity Hot Girl Productions following her deeply personal track “Cobra” in November of 2023.

    As Cardi B continues her single-drop journey for 2024 (continuing to tease fans with the promise of a long overdue second album), she follows up the Missy Elliott-sampling “Like What (Freestyle)” with “Enough (Miami).” Opening the track with the repetition of “yeah” in a manner that harkens back to how she sounds at the beginning of “WAP,” Cardi says pretty much the same thing she does on “Like What (Freestyle)” about being superior to all other bitches and having more money than they do as well. The only marked distinctions between the two tracks (apart from beat) might be that Coach is name-checked in one, and Van Cleef in the other.

    Both songs also mention Cardi’s “opps” “linking up” to conspire against her. In “Like What (Freestyle),” that sounds like, “First, that bitch hate me, then this bitch hate me/And somehow, they link up and they become friends, like, how?” In “Enough (Miami),” it becomes: “I see my opps linkin’ up, I’m like, ‘What in the fuck?’” Many believe Cardi is alluding to City Girls’ JT (which seems to add up via the song being titled “Enough [Miami]”—from whence City Girls hail, plus JT’s “other half” is Yung Miami) after the latter blatantly shifted to Team Nicki despite working with Cardi on 2019’s “Twerk.”

    As for the visuals that accompany “Like What (Freestyle)” and “Enough (Miami),” the latter goes in an even more no-frills (and no clothes) direction (thanks to help from Patience Harding, in what marks her first music video in the role of director). Because at least “Like What (Freestyle),” directed by Cardi’s baby daddy a.k.a. “BD,” Offset, has an actual, tangible set. Even if it’s “just” a house. Albeit a lavish one. In “Enough (Miami),” Cardi takes the route that many rappers and pop stars alike before her have: going for the all-white backdrop (with some black and beige ones thrown in between). It’s a tradition that’s been employed by artists like Crystal Waters with “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless),” MC Hammer with “U Can’t Touch This,” Warrant with “Cherry Pie,” Madonna with “Human Nature” (and, more germinally in her career, “Lucky Star”), Taylor Swift with “Shake It Off” and, to Cardi’s chagrin, Nicki Minaj with “Barbie Tingz.” And then, most recently of all, there’s been Miley Cryus’ rash of no-frills videos featuring only stark white or black backdrops, which we saw appear in “River,” “Used to Be Young” and, most freshly, “Doctor (Work It Out).”  

    And yet, per Cardi, she had the song (somewhat) ready back in January of 2023, which would have given her plenty of time to create a decent music video concept for it. But maybe what the lack of concept (apart from Cardi “looking hot” in a bunch of different couture outfits) says more than anything is that nothing is actually going on in the song—apart from the repetition of her usual profanities and insults, as well as flexes about how much money she has, and how embarrassing everyone else is for being poor. Something Cardi’s cohort, Megan Thee Stallion, got across quite effectively on Traumazine. And yes, Cardi uses a Megan Thee Stallion collaborator, OG Parker, for co-production on the track, with its beat being catchier than the lyrics themselves (though one does admire the Seussian stylings of Cardi rapping, “One bitch, two bitch, old bitch, new bitch/None of y’all bitches not gon’ do shit”). 

    Some might say that the lack of “plot,” so to speak, has more to do with putting a spotlight on the “striking” visuals Cardi is presenting with her body and clothes alone. However, if that’s the case, then why not go another similar route to the aforementioned Megan Thee Stallion in her “Body” video, during which, despite the spartan backdrops and non-narrative, she was able to at least bring back memorable choreography, in addition to providing her viewers with cameos galore throughout the video. In fact, it seemed Megan was pulling inspiration from more artful videos of the late 90s and early 00s, including Hype Williams’ “What’s It Gonna Be?!” by Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson. 

    The trend in, let’s say, “lackluster” video concepts that have no narrative, but rely, instead, only on a lot of changing “looks” to distract the audience from no “there” being there has likely been compounded by both the pandemic and social media. It was during the former that musicians were forced to scale way back in terms of resources that could create grandiose concepts (see: Charli XCX’s “Claws” video). And perhaps seeing that one didn’t really need to keep bothering with much in the way of bombast (why not save budgets for something else?) since people’s expectations had already been so lowered, the necessity gave way to becoming increasingly the norm.

    As for social media’s influence, the fact that the masses have been able to contribute to the everyman aesthetic of banality over the years—reaching an apex with TikTok videos—has surely played some part in trickling back into the mainstream. Although Cardi could have delivered a much more elaborate music video (e.g., some kind of riff on Miami Vice or Scarface), she chose to keep it simple, relying, as is the stripper’s way, on her body to be the main attraction.

    The result is a music video that’s indistinguishable from most others (whether from Cardi B herself or any of her contemporaries), as viewers are made to keep forgetting what the pinnacle of the art form was ever like before this period of low budgets and laziness (at least storyline-wise). Gone are the days of “telling a tale” à la Britney Spears’ “Lucky” video. And when any attempt at story is made, it simply takes from some already well-known pop culture reference (as is the case with Ariana Grande’s “we can’t be friends [wait for your love]” video). Something Cardi B didn’t even feel obliged to do with this particular single.

    Look, concerts are great. I would love to see my entire Spotify Wrapped lineup live. And I’ve spent thousands of dollars on Harry Styles alone — judge me if you want, I don’t plan on stopping. But my wallet isn’t as enthusiastic.


    That’s where the beloved music festival comes in. It’s the best opportunity to see a bunch of artists in the span of a few days. You either love them or you’re not built for them…and I fall somewhere in between.

    A music festival is the equivalent of an appetizer sampler; you get to see some artists you normally wouldn’t spend money on, and you also get some of your classic favorite artists all on the same lineup. For example, I went to Firefly Music Festival to see Billie Eilish…and left loving The Killers.

    Now that the weather is getting warmer and we are increasingly more open to the idea of leaving our homes, festival season is quickly approaching. Coachella, one of the world’s most famous (and potentially overrated) festivals, occurs every year in April and kicks off a slew of fun music festivals to attend.

    The only issue is: how do you choose the best music festival for you? With over 50 festivals listed already this Spring and Summer 2024, it can be hard to choose. I like to check out the lineups and see which festivals have the most new artists for me to discover. Then, I take a look at where they’re happening and make my decision from there.

    I’ve rounded up a few festivals happening in the US in 2024 that are both newsworthy and will get you to see the most relevant artists in the industry. Enjoy the food, the shopping, the arts, and the acts!


    M3F Fest

    Where? Phoenix, Arizona

    When? March 1-2, 2024

    Who? Dominic Fike, Duke Dumont, Hippo Campus, Gorgon City, SG Lewis, Dayglow, DRAMA, and more.

    What? A music festival thrown by non-profit, The M3F Fund, where 100% of proceeds go to charities like Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Arizona Helping Hands, and more. It’s a great way to give back while having fun with your friends and family, and their lineup is always good.


    Coachella

    Where? Indio, California

    When? April 12-14 + 19-21, 2024

    Who? Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat, Lil Uzi Vert, John Summit, Dom Dolla, Jon Batiste, Bleachers, No Doubt, J Balvin, and more.

    What? The festival where spotting an influencer or two will be the highlight of your trip. You probably won’t make out with Timothee Chalamet, but you definitely will eat some overpriced food. However, you have to go to Coachella once in your life. This year marks the reunion of No Doubt — and perfect timing, since TikTok has revived their music for Gen Z.

    Who? Noah Kahan, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Young the Giant, Girl in Red, and more.

    What? A great mix of indie and rock acts spread throughout the weekend. I would travel far and wide to see Noah Kahan ahead of his summer arena tour, and this is a great excuse to do so.

    What? One of the most diverse music festivals in terms of genre…Hangout Music Festival has everything- from popular EDM acts to country to pop. It’s also one of the few tour dates Lana Del Rey has right now, so go see her while you can.

    When? June 9-11, 2024
