Sonder, a short-term rental company and former Airbnb rival, abruptly went out of business after Marriott ended its licensing deal on Nov. 9 — leaving guests scrambling as they were told to vacate their rooms immediately, according to accounts shared with CBS News and on social media.
Paul Strack, 63, visiting Boston from Little Rock, Arkansas, told CBS News he received an email from Marriott on Sunday about his Sonder stay, but he initially mistook it for a scam. The email said that Marriott’s agreement with Sonder had ended, and that “we are unable to continue your reservation beyond today.”
“[W]e are kindly requesting that you check out of the property as soon as you are able,” the email read, according to a copy obtained by CBS News.
Because he had mistaken it for spam, he ignored it. But on Monday, after exploring Boston and returning to the family’s accommodation at the end of the day, Strack found his room’s door wide open and his family’s belongings packed up and left in a hallway.
“Even our dirty clothes and toiletries were packed up, and our laptops were in plastic bags,” he told CBS News.
Sonder on Monday said it would wind down operations immediately, and that it expects to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to liquidate its U.S. assets. The company describes itself as a global operator of “premium, design-forward apartments and intimate boutique hotels serving the modern traveler” that has faced financial challenges related to its agreement with Marriott, which the hotel chain terminated on Sunday.
“We are devastated to reach a point where a liquidation is the only viable path forward,” Janice Sears, interim chief executive officer of Sonder said in a statement Monday. “Unfortunately, our integration with Marriott International was substantially delayed due to unexpected challenges in aligning our technology frameworks, resulting in significant, unanticipated integration costs, as well as a sharp decline in revenue arising from Sonder’s participation in Marriott’s Bonvoy reservation system.”
“We explored all viable alternatives to avoid this outcome, but we are left with no choice other than to proceed with an immediate wind-down of our operations and liquidation of our assets,” she added.
Strack, who said he’d booked Sonder residences in the past, and until recently had enjoyed the experiences, was frustrated by his subsequent interactions with Marriott personnel, which he called “not helpful.”
Marriott did not immediately respond to CBS News’ request for comment on its communications with Sonder guests after ending the partnership.
Marriott recommended he stay at a nearby property for the remainder of the family’s stay, according to Strack, which he estimated would have cost around $700 a night.
Ultimately, the family spent their final night in Boston in the room that they had been kicked out of.
“We got back to our room and we stayed in it last night, even though technically we probably were not supposed to,” he said.
When the Marriott Marquis Times Square opened in 1985, its soaring atrium and glass elevators were meant to feel futuristic and help reinvent a faded Times Square. Nearly four decades later, stepping inside still carries that sense of spectacle.
Architect John Portman, a pioneer of the atrium hotel style, designed the Marquis to operate as a self-contained city. Watching the elevators glide up through the 49-story atrium still feels both retro and timeless, like something—somehow—out of both “Bladerunner” and Frank Lloyd Wright’s sketchbook at once.
The 8th floor of the New York Marriott Marquis features modern seating areas that overlook the hotel’s soaring atrium.
This year marks the New York Marriott Marquis’s 40th anniversary. Since opening in 1985, the hotel has stood as both a symbol of Times Square’s revival and a practical home base of sorts for travelers who want to be in the center of it all, but with all the predictability of the Marriott brand.
It’s no surprise then that last year, it had the most redemption stays in the Marriott portfolio globally (this includes redemptions with points and Free Night Awards from co-branded credit cards and other perk programs).
In a pricey city like New York, using points or free night awards here makes sense: guests can rest their heads just footsteps from Broadway theaters, Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park. Then wake up, glide serenely down a capsule elevator in the vast hotel’s atrium, and head to the M Club lounge on the 8th floor for waffles and scrambled eggs.
The M Club lounge at the New York Marriott Marquis provides an elevated space for Marriott Bonvoy elite members and guests who book access.
Reserved for Marriott Bonvoy elite members and guests who book access, the lounge feels like a quiet perch above Times Square, serving elaborate breakfast buffets (decent food—but plenty of it!), coffee and light fare. For families, it’s a convenient spot to fuel up before exploring, but for business travelers, it doubles as a serene place to answer emails and read the news.
A recently renovated guest room at the New York Marriott Marquis overlooks Midtown Manhattan. The hotel has nearly 2,000 rooms and suites.
Upstairs, close to 2,000 guest rooms continue the theme of breathing space in the middle of Midtown. Standard rooms have king or double beds and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the city. Suites add separate living areas and generous square footage. For many travelers, the size of the rooms is what makes the Marquis stand apart from the typical cramped Manhattan hotel.
Visitors walk through Times Square outside the New York Marriott Marquis, located at West 46th Street and Broadway.
And then, there’s the proximity to Broadway. Without even hailing a cab, you can descend right into the bustling, historic theater district. The Marquis’ location makes this aspect of your stay feel almost small-town in scale, or like you’re walking onto a movie set; it’s so convenient. On the sidewalks, theatergoers line up shoulder to shoulder for a shows, but you can mosy your way there, no long taxi rides across town or $75 Uber rides from Brooklyn. For many members, that cost-effectiveness makes the Marquis one of the smartest and most popular redemptions in New York City.
One night I walked a block from the Marquis to see The Outsiders at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on West 45th Street. Within minutes I was in my seat without ever calling a cab. That kind of seamless shift from hotel to show feels like pure New York magic.
Dining holds up too. On the 8th floor, Revel & Rye feels tucked in and intimate, with low lighting, leather seating and a menu of American comfort food and whiskey-forward cocktails.
Revel & Rye at the New York Marriott Marquis offers a cozy atmosphere with low lighting, leather seating and a menu centered on American comfort food and whiskey-forward cocktails.
Sharing the floor just off the atrium is the Broadway Lounge brings more energy with New York–style dishes and floor-to-ceiling windows looking directly onto Times Square.

Come holiday time, the New York Marriott Marquis pulls out all the stops. Its 25 Days of Festive Fun events run from December 1 to 25 with carolers in the atrium, cookie-decorating workshops, Santa-approved rooms, the Very Merry Santa Brunch—which tends to sell out quickly—and Christmas trees in your rooms upon request.
And of course, step outside and you’re a short walk from the Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, the Rockefeller Center tree, and Bryant Park’s Winter Village for skating and shopping.
A Santa-approved guest room at the New York Marriott Marquis features holiday décor, including a Christmas tree, garlands and festive accents, as part of the hotel’s annual holiday programming upon request.
The Marquis has also made its way into pop culture. One of its high-floor hospitality suites—typically used for events and connected to guestrooms on either side—was used as a filming location in HBO’s Succession. The suite doubled as a Manhattan penthouse in the series’ final season, adding to the hotel’s lore as both a stage for travelers and a backdrop for New York stories.

Forty years in, the New York Marriott Marquis is part of Times Square’s identity. It is a spectacle when you want it, convenience when you need it, and still one of the most popular places in the world to cash in your points.

Some American Express members are being targeted for a 35% transfer bonus to Marriott. Normally you can transfer 1,000 Membership Rewards points to 1,000 Marriott points. Under this promotion you’d receive 1,350 Marriott points.
The Fine Print
Our Verdict
Previous transfer bonuses for Marriott have been:
Even with the transfer bonus this isn’t worth considering as American Express MR are much more valuable than Marriott points.
Marriott International is being taken to task after the hotel chain suffered multiple data breaches that exposed sensitive information for more than 344 million customers around the world. First, Marriott agreed to a settlement of with a group of 50 US attorneys general. According to Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, 131.5 million hotel customers in the states had their information compromised in the attacks on the hotels.
Second, a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission will require Marriott and its Starwood Hotels & Resorts subsidiary to implement a new information security system to protect against future data exposures. The FTC agreement includes measures such as data minimization, account review tools for its loyalty rewards programs and a link for guests to request deletion of their personal information.
Today’s settlements center on three separate data breaches at Marriott and Starwood between 2014 and 2020 that allowed malicious actors to access passport information, payment card numbers, loyalty numbers, dates of birth, email addresses and other personal information. But cybersecurity issues have been an ongoing concern for these two businesses over the past decade. Hackers used “social engineering techniques” to access an employee computer and steal about . Marriott was also part of a larger attack in 2019. Starwood was victim of discovered in 2018; the company faced a fine of about in the UK for that incident.
It’s now possible to transfer Marriott points to Starbucks Stars at a rate of 1,000 Marriott : 100 Starbucks stars. Marriott isn’t the most valuable currency, but Starbucks is even worse when you consider this transfer rate.
As a reminder Starbucks stars can be redeemed for the following:
25 Stars: Customize your drink
100 Stars: Brewed hot or iced coffee or tea, bakery item, packaged snack, and more
200 Stars: Handcrafted drink (Cold Brew, lattes, and more) or hot breakfast
300 Stars: Sandwich, protein box, or at-home coffee
400 Stars: Select Starbucks merchandise
I don’t think transferring makes sense unless you have a small amount of Marriott points and don’t plan to use the program in the future.

Solved: Problem booking Air France/KLM with Virgin points
Virgin points are often the cheapest option for booking Air France or KLM flights. The problem comes in after you click through to book the flight… after you enter each passenger’s information… after you enter your credit card details. When you click to actually finalize the booking, the system thinks for a little while then decides “no soup for you!” with a message that says “Sorry, there are no longer seats available on your chosen flight. Andrew Warren and Ava Dash at the Save Venice Ball. Marcy Swingle
It’s Friday night, and a highlight of the gala season is on the calendar: Save Venice’s Un Ballo in Maschera, an event I always look forward to. The glitzy soirée, which focuses on raising money dedicated to the artistic preservation of Venice, Italy, is, fittingly, held at the Plaza Hotel. While the non-profit organization hosts several galas, the New York iteration is always special; this year, it fell on Friday, April 12.
Tonight’s date is Ava Dash, one of my best friends and, luckily, one of those girls who is surprisingly easygoing, because we both ended up last-minute winging our looks for the evening—shockingly enough, they worked out quite well, if I do say so myself. When I say I was texting my salesperson at Saks at 5 p.m. looking for the perfect McQueen blazer, I’m not exaggerating. Luckily, Ava and I had a good starting place, as Julian Polak of Maison Spoiled texted Ava and me photos of sparkling diamond options to tie our outfits together, and base the looks around—I ended up basing my look around a white gold-and-yellow diamond brooch Julian picked for me.
For Ava, I pulled a vintage, circa-1980s couture Calvin Klein marigold gown from my late grandmother’s collection, and tied the look together with tan Rachel Roy shoes and a bejeweled Judith Leiber monkey bag. Sometimes I do miss being in fashion, because I always love when my girlfriends let me style them. A few photos later, and we hopped in an Uber and were off to the Plaza.
Ava Dash. Matteo Prandoni/BFA.com
We arrived just in time for the last moments of cocktail hour, and my inner Kris Jenner came out, making sure Ava, the 24-year-old daughter of Damon Dashand Rachel Roy, was photographed by everyone.
Now, onto the actual event, which was sponsored by Oscar de la Renta and the Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel. The sold-out event, themed La Primavera and attended by over 400 guests, raised more than $1.2 million for the preservation of historic art and architecture in Venezia.
As someone who has attended charity galas since I was 14 years old, I’m confident that I know a thing or two about how to do them right. The key to this event was the backdrop, which meant having it decorated and transformed into a Venetian garden by Save Venice co-chair and event engineer Bronson van Wyck and his team, Van Wyck & Van Wyck. With Bronson on decor, there isn’t much left to worry about, especially with Nathalie Kaplan’s consultancy agency, NGK Global, handling logistics. She’s the queen of these society charity galas, which are her speciality. And with corporate sponsors like Chaneland Gucci, the night was bound to be a success.
Ivy Getty, Emily Ratajkowski and Nicky Hilton. Matteo Prandoni/BFA.com
Aside from Ava, of course, some of the other best-dressed attendees included Tina Leung (in an Oscar de la Renta Barbie-esque sheer crystal top and pink silk bow dress),Di Mondo (in a blue hydrangeas-covered creation with butterflies and a matching mask),Ivy Getty(in a sheer, embellished Oscar de la Renta gown and Bulgari jewels) and Natalie Jackson (in a classic black Vivienne Westwood gown and over-the-top butterfly mask). And let’s not forget about van Wyck’s peacock cape. Other fashionable attendees included Emily Ratajkowski, Jenna Lyons, Nicky Hilton Rothschild, Anna van Patten, Julian Schnabel, Huma Abedin, LaQuan Smith and Ezra J William, to name just a few.
After the cocktail hour came to an end, Ava and I headed to our seats for the dinner.Laura KimandFernando Garcia, the co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, presided over the Ceremony for Outstanding Masks; Jordan Roth, Andy Yu and Lisa Sher-Chambers won the three prizes.

It was an incredibly, glamorous evening, and in the midst of the festivities, I caught up with Ava on what she’s up to right now.
Observer: What’s the latest with you?
Ava Dash: I just moved back to New York. After graduating college at LMU in L.A., I’m excited to be back in the city and focusing on modeling as well as television projects.
What’s next for you, career-wise?
I recently worked with PETA, launching a campaign advocating for the welfare and well-being of animals. This has always been a priority to me, and working with their team has taught me so much. I am also very grateful to have just signed with a new modeling agency in New York City.
Why the switch from L.A. to New York?
I was born in New York and I moved to L.A. with my family when I was 14 years old; I did high school as well as college there, and was ready for a change. I wanted to elevate my career and experience my 20s in the city. The experiences that I can have in New York City, I just wasn’t having in L.A.. The New York lifestyle is so spontaneous; I was walking around Soho with friends and kept running into people we knew, adding to our group, and a magician stopped us and did an impromptu show. This type of thing never happens in L.A., where you’re just driving from place to place.
What’s your favorite part of New York?
Being able to walk around and meet new people. The feeling of endless possibilities drew me back to the city where I was born. Literally whatever you’re into, you can find the best of it in this city.
We’re at Save Venice—what other charitable causes are important to you?
The well-being of children is the most important. My mom and I co-authored a young adult novel [96 Words for Love, published in 2019] and gave the proceeds to girls rescued from sex trafficking in India. I am also very passionate about the well-being of animals, and have traveled to Thailand to work at a sanctuary for rescued elephants.
Ava Dash, Andrew Warren, Julia Moshy, Sarah Shatz and Natalie Jackson. Deonté Lee/BFA.com
What has been your favorite part of the night thus far?
I love people-watching and seeing how people come together for a theme. There is so much devastation that happens in Venice every year, so I am proud to be a part of a community that cares about this cause.
The event was beautiful! The food was delicious, the drinks were flowing and I love that the dance floor was packed throughout the night. It seems like everyone enjoyed themselves in helping to raise money for the historical and fabulous city of Venice.
Rate the decor one to 10?
It’s quintessential old school New York—9/10.
Who’s best dressed that you’ve seen tonight
Me!
I must ask—boyfriend or single lady?
Single lady! Trying to channel my inner Carrie Bradshaw with my recent move.
Well, on that note—anyone you’d immediately say yes to going on a date with?
Update 4/11/24: Deal is back through 5/23/24, this time it’s for 10%, up to $57 max cashback.

Earning a hotel credit card welcome bonus is the fastest (and most effortless) way to achieve free shelter for your upcoming travels. So in the supremely rare instance when a travel credit card offers a bonus worth potentially thousands of dollars, it’s worth writing your mother about.
American Express and Marriott just yanked the shroud from two such limited-time offers.
Normally, welcome bonuses of this size are guarded by daunting spending requirements. But if you can manage to funnel just $1,000 per month through a credit card, you’ll earn either bonus without an issue. And you’ll have those points in hand just in time for sun and fun.
Here’s what you need to know about these new offers—and whether a Marriott credit card is a good fit for your travel style.
Increased offers for American Express Marriott credit cards
Through May 1, 2024, two Marriott credit cards are offering elevated welcome bonuses:
As you can see, these limited-time bonuses are far better than the previous offers—and you can bet your bottom dollar that they’ll crash back down to earth after May 1.
What can you do with these Marriott Bonvoy points?
Depending on how you use your points, you could squeeze thousands of dollars in free travel from either of these bonuses. You can redeem your rewards for over a week at many nondescript roadside Marriotts (think Courtyard by Marriott, TownePlace Suites, SpringHill Suites, etc.), or you could splurge on a glitzy weekend at a five-star resort.
For example, the Ritz-Carlton Naples on the gulf coast of Florida is a super popular summer destination. In early July, rooms cost over $1,200 per night. But you can book a weekend stay for 178,000 Marriott points (plus ~$100 in taxes and fees) for the same dates. That’s a value of 1.4 cents per Marriott point, which is a great deal.
You would more than enough points to book this trip from opening the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card and meeting its minimum spending requirement. In other words, you’ll could get nearly $2,500 in value from a single credit card welcome bonus.
If your idea of Naples is more Aperol Spritz and the world’s best pizza, we’ve got you covered. How about five August nights in Italy at the Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo? With the fifth night free benefit Marriott offers on award nights, it’s within reach with the welcome bonus plus the spending you would do to earn it:
Again, that’s over $2,000 in value (2,144 euro=$2,323 at time of publication) for a single bonus plus the associated spending. Fortune Recommends staff have stayed at this hotel and can vouch for both the incredible views and the bracing coffee served for one euro at the stand right outside the hotel.
American Express stipulates that you can only earn the welcome bonus on each of its cards once per lifetime (which typically means seven years in Amex-speak)—so it’s important to get the biggest bang for your application. These temporarily-increased bonuses are the perfect time to open either of these cards.

Amex Marriott credit cards offer more than just a shiny bonus
These increased welcome bonuses are incentive enough to kick the tires on either of these cards. But you’ll likely find that they’re worth keeping around, even if you don’t frequent Marriott properties. Using the best benefits even once or twice per year can deliver enough value to offset each card’s annual fee.
Here’s a quick rundown of each card:
