Dior Has the Best Makeup Staples—Take It From Me, a Major Makeup Lover

    [ad_1]

I love makeup more than most people do, which is evidenced by the number of makeup looks that I try on a regular basis for my stories. I feel incomplete if I haven’t created a makeup look for myself—it’s one of my favorite things to do.

After trying so many different kinds of makeup, I know that some makeup brands simply live in a whole different universe—that’s how good they are. Dior makeup is one of those brands. Every Dior product I’ve tried has been a major success for me, whether that’s one of its airbrush-esque foundations or a glowy lip gloss. Below, I’ve rounded up my favorite Dior products, and I saved the best ones for last.

  • Underlashing is the best thing you’ll ever try on your lashes

Underlashing is the best thing you’ll ever try on your lashes

    [ad_1]

Fine, I’m done gatekeeping. Underlashing is the ultimate secret to my most natural looking XXL fluttery eyelashes. I like the idea of falsies, but sometimes I think that they can look a little too bold or too loud on me, but once I found this underlashing trick, I haven’t looked back.

Underlash Technology™ is not new but has become very popular the last few years. Lashify, a British underlash brand were actually the inventors of this technology, they also currently hold 316 patents and 46 registered trademarks so I went straight to the experts and asked Jill Medicis, a LashifyPro® Senior Educator on everything you need to know about this epic eyelash technique that might just convert you for ever.

    What is underlashing?

As the name suggests, underlashing is less about giving you colossal lash effect, but more about enhancing your eyes naturally. The technique is simple and involves applying a razor-thin false lash (either styled as a strip or cut up as clusters), underneath your natural ones as opposed to the traditional way which would usually go on top. This will in turn give you beautifully subtle and almost undetectable, wispy lashes in a matter of seconds.

Jill Medicis tells me: “Our patented Underlash technology is when the Gossamer® Lash is applied to the underside of the natural lash rather than the top to create a seamless, undetectable finish. By applying to the underside of the lash you no longer have to worry about any additional makeup being applied to cover any strips or bands. This also allows you to achieve the most natural lash look.”

    How to do the underlash?

To pull it off seamlessly, you’ll need the right products. Most importantly a gentle underlash glue specifically designed to be eye-friendly. The good news is that underlashing is super easy to do at home for yourself. Lashify have also created an extra strength bonding glue that can allow underlashes to last upwards of seven days.

To apply the Lashify underlashes Jill says: “Lashify Gossamer® Lashes are applied to the underlash by applying our flexible, damage-free bond to the natural lash like you would mascara then applying the Gossamer Lashes by looking down into a mirror. All of our Gossamer Lashes are made of Korean PBT Silk, making them vegan and cruelty-free as well as virtually weightless so this application will cause zero damage to the natural lashes.”

Seems straight forward? Here is an universal step-by-step guide on how to do underlashing from home:

    1. Start with clean, dry lashes.
    2. Apply the underlash glue like you would your mascara on the lashes you are planning to cover with the falsies and let it get a little tacky.
    3. Using a mirror and your trusty applicator tool, position the underlashes (wether a strip or clusters) beneath your natural ones. Begin at the outer corner with the largest ones and work your way inwards.
    4. Gently press the underlashes in place, making sure they’re secure.
    5. Allow the glue to dry completely, which usually takes a few minutes.
    6. Once dry, you can apply mascara to blend your natural and false lashes, creating a seamless finish

  • Wednesday Addams makeup is trending on TikTok – here’s how to do it

Wednesday Addams makeup is trending on TikTok – here’s how to do it

    [ad_1]

With Halloween round the corner and ‘goth glam’ still a TikTok make-up sensation, Wednesday Addams’ makeup continues to be an inspiration to us all. Spurred on by last years Netflix series, aptly titled Wednesday in which Jenna Ortega plays the main character, her smudged black eyeliner and deep plum lip colour is en pointe for those of us yearning for a grungier make-up look that’s more than a smokey eye.

With TikTok videos aplenty showing us how to achieve the trend, user @melybaby.1 gives a detailed account of how to recreate Wednesday’s look with a light foundation, contoured cheeks and a soft red eyeshadow shade underneath her eyes to create the illusion of under eye bags. She then completes the look with soft brown eyeshadow to create a smokey eye, black winged eyeliner both on her eyelid and underneath her eye, and finishes off the look with a plum lip colour.

    TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

    Wednesday Addams step by step:

If you prefer easy instructions, we asked make-up artist Ciara O’Shea, to break down Wednesday’s look so you don’t even have to leave this page to perfect your macabre make-up mood.

Step 1: “Start with a matte primer to give the skin a velvety finish before applying a matte foundation and working in a powder foundation – I’d recommend MAC’s studio fix powder foundation. The idea here is to have a beautiful matte opaque and flawless base so keep each layer light and considered for the best finish.”

Step 2: “The quickest way to get the eyes done is to use a cream eyeshadow like Victoria Beckham’s EyeWear sticks. Use them all over the eye and under the lower lash then get a soft blender brush and smoke it out around the eye and up to the browbone. Next take a black eyeliner (Glamour suggests ByTerry Crayon Blackstar Eyeliner) to the root of the lower lashes and outer corner of the top lashes and keep it soft and gentle, nothing too harsh. Finish with lots of light layers of mascara – Clarins Wonder Perfect 4d is a lengthening mascara that’s fantastic for this.”

Step 3: “Give the cheeks a soft contour using a product like Makeup by Mario’s Soft Sculpt Shaping Stick that helps create that ‘hollow’ effect on cheeks and has a matte finish then add your lip in a rusty, plummy shade – 19/99 Beauty Tinted Balm in Terra is perfect.”

The actual products used on set

If accuracy is important to you and you want the ‘exact’ replica of Ortega’s look, the hair and make-up artist used on Wednesday – Tara McDonald revealed exactly what products she used to beauty expert Cat Quinn.

“I’m the first person to tell you Jenna Ortega’s exact lip colour in Wednesday,” Quinn claimed. “Makeup designer Tara McDonald told me exclusively that Wednesday is wearing a MAC lip pencil in Nightmoth (£18) with clear [lip] balm.”

    TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

In follow up videos, Quinn revealed the products that Ortega uses under her eye, including MAC script (£17) on the top and under her eye, MAC carbon (£17) to act as an eyeliner, and smudged MAC carbon and glitch in the matrix (£17) on the top lash line to create a smokey eye look.

    TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

As for freckles and contour, Quinn says McDonald used a sheer tinted foundation as Ortega’s base so not to cover up her natural freckles. She then used MAC sculpt powder (£18) and MAC shadowy powder (£18) to create the “half dead” look.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Now all you need to do is nail your braids, fold your arms and channel your best ‘dead to me’ look.

  • These Gucci Beauty Products Are the Height of Quiet (and Affordable) Luxury

These Gucci Beauty Products Are the Height of Quiet (and Affordable) Luxury

    [ad_1]

The catchphrase of the moment is “quiet luxury.” In case you haven’t heard of the term, it’s all about opting for luxurious items that don’t immediately scream designer. In other words, we’re forgoing logo bags and obvious labels in favor of tasteful, high-quality pieces that an untrained eye might think nothing of.

Yes, it all sounds very Waspy, but quiet luxury is actually an easier aesthetic to obtain than you may think. I’m here to tell you that the easiest way to participate in the quiet-luxury trend is through beauty products.

Beauty products are the perfect way to add a bit of bite-size luxury into your life at a more manageable price point. Let’s be honest. Given the current economic climate, many of us can’t afford to splurge on investment pieces from quiet-luxury mecca The Row (as much as we might like to). A high-quality lipstick or a long-lasting perfume is a much more realistic way to tap into the trend.

As I’m trying to add some luxe beauty products into my own life, I’ve turned my attention to Gucci. Gucci’s beauty selection is one of the best from designer brands. Think gorgeous, vintage-inspired packaging, highly efficacious formulas, and branding that doesn’t feel over-the-top. Below, find my curated Gucci beauty edit. The best part? Everything on this list is under $100, and many items are under $50.

  • Taraji P. Henson On Aging: Skin Care Tips, Spa Days & More

Taraji P. Henson On Aging: Skin Care Tips, Spa Days & More

    [ad_1]

When I sit down with actor, filmmaker, and mental health advocate Taraji P. Henson, I’m prepared to talk about changes. This series, after all, is meant to highlight how beauty icons have evolved over the years and what they’ve learned along the way. And we certainly talk about the shifting beauty landscape, the skin and hair care tips she’s learned, and the memories that stand out (like her affinity for blue eye shadow).

But to Henson, beauty surrounds not only what matures but what actually remains constant in her life—namely, her 40-year friendship with Tracie Jade Jenkins, who serves as the executive director of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation

“I think we were married in a past life,” Henson jokes during a fireside chat at the recent Women’s Mental Health & Empowerment Summit hosted by Kate Spade New York. As the two creatives recount how they met—and remained “soul mates”—throughout the years, they represent just how high true friendship can lift you up. (And on a beauty-related note, social connection can even facilitate faster wound healing.)

“All humans want to be seen,” Henson tells me after the summit. “We want to be seen, we want to be heard, and we want to be loved.” And when you have someone who truly sees you through all the natural shifts that life brings? Well, that’s a beautiful thing.

So, if you take one piece of advice from Henson (in addition to her healthy aging tips below), it’s to call a friend today. If anything, your skin will glow for it.

    [ad_1]

A good nude lipstick is notoriously challenging to find. Nudes are tricky—you want a nude lipstick to flatter your skin color and undertones while adding a little extra something to your overall makeup. Too often, nude lipsticks can have the opposite effect of what you want—the wrong color may wash you out, clash with your skin, or make your lips look like they’ve disappeared. This is especially an issue with non-inclusive shade ranges.

That’s why opting for lipstick lines that offer extensive shade ranges is so important, especially when you’re looking for a nude. CTZN Cosmetics makes some of the most inclusive nude lipsticks out there, and it shows—all you have to do is look at the wide range of celebrities who use CTZN lipsticks.

Celebs like Beyoncé, Megan Fox, SZA, and more are counted as fans of CTZN’s Nudiversal Lip Duo. The lip duo, which is lipstick on one end and gloss on the other, comes in 25 nude shades meant to flatter all skin tones. Keep reading for the exact shades celebs go for.

Coven nails are the quiet way to lean into your dark witch era

    [ad_1]

If you’d never considered coven nails before, you might be more on board now. That’s because, word has it, when the world around us is looking pretty bleak (see: cozzie livs) we tend to turn to the the supernatural and all things occult for a little escapism.

It’s maybe why burning sage or cupping crystals is looking a lot less woo-woo – it’s worth a go, right? Or perhaps its why #witchtok has provided a safe haven (ahem, coven) for literally billions of us on TikTok. It’s probably also why the grunge and goth girl aesthetic has exploded because if we don’t have the funds to be “that girl” we can be “alt dark witch girl” all for the price of a kohl liner, and feel like we’re raging against the machine while doing it.

Whatever the case, it seems that being able to stare at teensy wiccan symbols on top of our fingernails is the mini daily distraction we’re craving because we’ve started noticing coven nails everywhere. They’ve been manifested in multiple different ways, too. Alongside stars, moons, chains, pentagons and celestial skyscapes, we’ve seen crack and schism nails, eclipse nails, ombre black nails and mist-effect manis all feeding into the trend. So, whether you want to make your witchy intensions known, or keep it a little more mysterious, there’s a design for you.

  • I’ve tried hundreds of eyeliners as a beauty editor and nothing beats the £3 fave I found aged 14

I’ve tried hundreds of eyeliners as a beauty editor and nothing beats the £3 fave I found aged 14

    [ad_1]

A definite perk of the job when you’re a beauty editor is getting to try endless products. It never gets old, although honestly, it can make you a little fickle. I’ve leap-frogged through foundations, moisturisers, mascaras and brow pencils. But one product I’ve never strayed away from, is the £3 liquid eyeliner I picked up in Boots when I was a teen.

From then on, winged liner became my default and in the (many) years since, I’ve perfected a trusty quick cat-eye that brings me more beauty compliments than any other hair or makeup flex.

Many other liquid eyeliners have passed my desk over the decade I’ve been doing my job, but no matter how bougie, hyped, celeb-endorsed or TikTok-approved they’ve been, I’ve never been swayed.

So, let me tell you about my OG favourite and why I love it. Collection’s Fast Stroke Eyeliner is a game-changer for the slickest flicks. Rather than the felt-tip format that many other liquid liners take, this features more of an ink pot and quill solution. The weighted lid helps to effortlessly guide the liner up, across and around the contours of your lash line, then out for a crisp wing. And, since you’re able to dip the brush in and out of the pot, you have much more control over how loaded it is and – like a mascara wand – you can decant the excess off on the neck of the pot, to tailor how much you apply.

The nib offers unmatched precision and it’s less flexible than others I’ve found, so it won’t bend and splay, which is the death knell for non-bulky lines. So, if you’ve found you’ve never really been able to get on with the felt tip liners (I count myself one of those people), it offers a more manageable option, at least for my skill set.

The pigment is a deep, carbon black that gives stunning definition and we haven’t even got to one of the best bits yet – the price tag. For less than £3, Fast Stroke easily stands up against some of the most expensive and high-profile liquid liners I’ve tried.

So, yep, others have tried, but none have surpassed my beloved Fast Stroke.

  • A Global Artistry Director Told Me Her Best Tricks for A+ Eyeliner

A Global Artistry Director Told Me Her Best Tricks for A+ Eyeliner

    [ad_1]

I reached out to Sarah Tanno, the global artistry director of Haus Labs, for the scoop on everything you need know about eyeliner pencils. As expected, she not only spilled her personal product preferences but also gave us some helpful guidance on how to go about selecting the right products. “I like eyeliners that have a liquid-like texture that don’t dry too fast, but when it does dry, won’t smudge or move out of place when set,” says Tanno. “The formula is very important when it comes to finding a long-wearing, non-irritating eyeliner.” Her go-to pick is Haus Labs’ Optic Intensity Eco Eyeliner ($22).

Its formula is clean, vegan, and cruelty-free in addition to being waterproof and safe to use on sensitive eyes. “I love that there’s a brush on one end so you can really create the perfect line with precision,” she says of the product. It’s available in matte and shimmer finishes across 13 shades, and Tanno shared her favorites: Black Onyx Matte because it produces bold pigment while being gentle on the waterline, White Onyx Matte to brighten the eyes when applied to the waterline, and Deep Coco Matte because, “not only is it a gorgeous rich brown for the eyes, [but] it also makes a great lip liner!” Discovering a multipurpose product makes it that much better.

  • Are these Drunk Elephant B-Goldi Bright Drops the skincare-makeup hybrid we’ve been waiting for?

Are these Drunk Elephant B-Goldi Bright Drops the skincare-makeup hybrid we’ve been waiting for?

    [ad_1]

Applying directly on my cheekbones and other areas like I would with a highlighter, I blended in the drops until they created a subtle hydrated shine. The product gives an understated gold tint rather than the bronze of their D-Bronzi drops which I think I’d favour. Overall, I could definitely see this being a great glowy primer for those wanting a more shimmery finish and equally a more subtle alternative to highlighter. Though these are definitely multipurpose drops, the key with them really seems to be to create a cocktail situation with your other products, so I’ll be mixing it directly with my moisturiser next in hopes of an effortless natural glow!

I’m a dry-skinned gal, so anything that can boost glow, I’m on board with. This offers up radiant halo skin without being super glittery which looks a lot more natural. I tried it straight onto bare skin and loved how juicy my complexion looked, but in the future, I’ll be adding a couple of drops into my foundation to give me some extra coverage as well.

I love that while it’s on your skin making it look gorgeous it also gets down to business with some hard-working skincare ingredients. Niacinamide boosts skin hydration and balances excess oil, while diglucosyl gallic acid targets inflammation and hyperpigmentation.

In some ways this product is a hard one to explain. If you’re expecting to get a strobe-like highlight, then the B-Goldi Bright Drops isn’t for you. Instead, it’s more of a complexion enhancer with good-for-skin ingredients such as niacinamide. I mixed the B-Goldi Bright Drops into my normal face serum to make my skin look more luminous and alive on a day when I felt I looked particularly tired.

I also dabbed a little on the tops of my cheekbones. Having used the D-Bronzi Drops before, I was expecting a more noticeable difference to my skin. I liked the fact that the Bright Drops imparted a subtle glisten rather than a wet-look finish and it looked really pretty by day. But for a going out look I think I’d like a little more sheen on my skin

  • I’ve been wearing a £205 lipstick for a week. Is it really worth it?

I’ve been wearing a £205 lipstick for a week. Is it really worth it?

    [ad_1]

So did I feel expensive wearing a £205 lipstick? The easy answer is yes. Chanel 31 Le Rouge is weighty to the touch, smells of money (well, gardenia, but you know what I mean) and looks like the type of product your cool graphic designer boyfriend would appreciate.

But is it worth it? That’s harder to answer. Remove the rose-tinted glasses and £140 is slightly obscene for just a lipstick case, no matter how beautifully crafted, especially in the cost of living crisis. I also have to admit that the refills (£65 each) are unnecessarily costly, given they are twice as expensive as that of a regular Chanel lipstick refill.

That said, however, there’s no denying that the psychology of luxury will make Chanel 31 Le Rouge catnip for die-hard beauty and fashion fans. The fact that each shade captures a moment in Coco Chanel’s life means it could even be considered a purse-friendly second best to the iconic tweed jacket, where every stitch speaks to the heritage of the House.

But maybe there’s also something more meaningful at play here. At the launch, a fellow beauty editor took a long time swatching each shade until she’d found the perfect one. When I asked her about it, she explained that this lipstick is so special, she’s going to save it for her wedding day and then hand it down to her future daughter or daughter-in-law on her special day.

Perhaps this is a more practical way to look at the Chanel 31 Le Rouge lipsticks – as a purchase to mark a milestone or a special occasion rather than something that’s going to loll around on the bottom of your everyday makeup bag.

I remember when my great aunt died she left me her beautiful powder and rouge compacts. All were in pristine condition, the metal intricately embossed with art deco designs, and refillable in an age when soothing your eco conscience wasn’t even a consideration. With magpie keenness, I was desperate to play with them as a child and remember the care she would take pulling the compact out of her handbag for a delicate midday top up.

Maybe Chanel 31 Le Rouge is the chic, modern-day equivalent of those compacts – an heirloom beauty product that stands the test of time.
