A definite perk of the job when you’re a beauty editor is getting to try endless products. It never gets old, although honestly, it can make you a little fickle. I’ve leap-frogged through foundations, moisturisers, mascaras and brow pencils. But one product I’ve never strayed away from, is the £3 liquid eyeliner I picked up in Boots when I was a teen.
From then on, winged liner became my default and in the (many) years since, I’ve perfected a trusty quick cat-eye that brings me more beauty compliments than any other hair or makeup flex.
Many other liquid eyeliners have passed my desk over the decade I’ve been doing my job, but no matter how bougie, hyped, celeb-endorsed or TikTok-approved they’ve been, I’ve never been swayed.
So, let me tell you about my OG favourite and why I love it. Collection’s Fast Stroke Eyeliner is a game-changer for the slickest flicks. Rather than the felt-tip format that many other liquid liners take, this features more of an ink pot and quill solution. The weighted lid helps to effortlessly guide the liner up, across and around the contours of your lash line, then out for a crisp wing. And, since you’re able to dip the brush in and out of the pot, you have much more control over how loaded it is and – like a mascara wand – you can decant the excess off on the neck of the pot, to tailor how much you apply.
The nib offers unmatched precision and it’s less flexible than others I’ve found, so it won’t bend and splay, which is the death knell for non-bulky lines. So, if you’ve found you’ve never really been able to get on with the felt tip liners (I count myself one of those people), it offers a more manageable option, at least for my skill set.
The pigment is a deep, carbon black that gives stunning definition and we haven’t even got to one of the best bits yet – the price tag. For less than £3, Fast Stroke easily stands up against some of the most expensive and high-profile liquid liners I’ve tried.
So, yep, others have tried, but none have surpassed my beloved Fast Stroke.
