  • An Editor’s Review Of The Woman In Me by Britney Spears

An Editor’s Review Of The Woman In Me by Britney Spears

    [ad_1]

My childhood belongs to the Spears family. Jamie Lynn starred in one of my favorite shows, Nickelodeon’s
Zoey 101, as the title character, while Britney was the soundtrack of my adolescence.

Growing up, I’d sing “Toxic” at the top of my lungs. And the
Circus and Blackout albums endlessly circulated through my iPod Nano. Britney’s denim outfit alongside Justin Timberlake were one of the most popular couple’s costumes every year.

And as I grew older, I was stunned by the truth that came out about the realities of Britney Spears’ life. Once the world’s sweetheart, she was constantly ridiculed online and began posting seemingly out-of-character Instagram videos. The world started paying closer attention, and the #FreeBritney movement began.

“I don’t think people knew how much the #FreeBritney movement meant to me…And the fact that my friends and my fans sensed what was happening and did all that for me, that’s a debt I can never repay”

Fans of Spears’ were told that the star’s erratic behavior may have be due to her father’s, Jamie Spears’ conservatorship that granted him control over Britney’s estate and personal affairs. A legal battle ensued, and in November 2021, Britney Spears was officially free.

“The conservatorship was created supposedly because I was incapable of doing anything at all…So why was it that a few weeks later, they had me shoot an episode of
How I Met Your Mother and then sent me on a grueling world tour?”

Considering the horrors of Britney’s conservatorship, the harrowing legal trial, and all she’d endured, you might assume the harsh online criticism was over…You’d be wrong, because that’s the American public: ever-present, ever-hypercritical.

    Which is why
everyone had to read her debut memoir, The Woman In Me, it’s such a cultural phenomenon. We know the Britney Spears of the tabloids and the stage and the trial, but we’ve never heard her story from her perspective. Which is why I had to read it myself.

@yourbestfriendjoshua These are the biggest BOMBSHELLS about Britney Spears’ time in the 13+ year conservatorship, in her own words…🤯🤯🤯 #britneyspears #omg #justiceforbritney ♬ Biggest BOMBSHELLS in Britney Spears memoir – Joshua Pingley

What’s glaringly obvious from the book’s first paragraph, is that Britney must have had a strong hand in writing it. The sentences are quite simple, and this isn’t to insult her writing because I believe she’s got a fantastic story, but you can tell a professional writer did not write this. I was able to read 288 pages in only a few hours total!

Britney is clearly traumatized from a whole host of situations: her father stealing her money, being overworked and stay captive inside all day, her family turning on her for the sake of conservatorship, and the fact that Justin Timberlake wanted her to go through an at-home abortion so the public wouldn’t find out.

@betches This Britney and Justin tea is too piping hot to deal with! ☕️ #britneyspearsmemoir #britneyandjustin #justintimberlakebritneyspearsbreakup #thewomaninmebritneyspears ♬ original sound – Betches

She details her life in an honest and open manner that we’ve never seen before: her abusive marriage with Kevin Federline, how Justin Timberlake cheated on her multiple times, the abortion, the conservatorship, and her relationship with each family member including Jamie Lynn.

It’s genuinely haunting to hear the torture and abuse that she’s endured so far in her life, but also helps you understand Britney. While her Instagram posts may be off-putting to some, she’s lived so much of her life under the control of others.

“I would go to sleep early. And then I would wake up and do what they told me again. And again. And again. It was like
Groundhog Day. I did that for thirteen years.”

But there are happy moments captured by Spears as well: her love for her children and her fans, her dedication to performing and the albums she loved writing. And then there’s her account of regaining her sense of self.

Now, we get to see Britney as she’d like to be seen: a strong performer, a loving mother and friend, and someone who deserves to live her own life on her own terms.

You don’t always get a firsthand glimpse into the life of one of the most famous pop-stars in the world…so when you do, you read their memoir.

  • Timbaland has apologised for saying Britney Spears needs a ‘muzzle’ – but why are men so scared of women speaking their truth?

Timbaland has apologised for saying Britney Spears needs a ‘muzzle’ – but why are men so scared of women speaking their truth?

    [ad_1]

Seeing as Britney had spoken out about ways that her body and mind were controlled by her father’s conservatorship, not to mention the toll a secret abortion had on her, it’s even more hurtful that words of physical restraint like “muzzle” were used. She fought hard enough to be free, and men who are supposed to support her are still talking about holding her back. It’s an example of a larger problem – men using misogynistic language to limit women’s power when it comes to their story, their bodies, their sexuality.

Since then, Timbaland has taken to TikTok to apologise for his words. “I’m sorry to all the Britney fans, even to her,” he said, calling attention to how inappropriate the word “muzzle” was. Obviously.

“I’m sorry, because muzzle was — no, you have a voice. You speak what you want to speak. Who am I to tell you what not to speak? And I was wrong for saying that. I was looking at it from a different lens and what I am is a reconcile person. I’m not a person who takes sides… I apologise to the Britney fans and her.”

In direct response to allegations of the sexism around his “muzzle” comment, Timbaland said: “And, uh, yes, you know, about respecting women, hell yeah.”

While we respect the public apology and all, it’s very disappointing and rather telling that it was necessary in the first place. Considering the fact that Britney’s memoir specifically describes her being institutionalised unneccessarily as a means of control, why would anyone see fit to use the word “crazy” to describe her? It’s infantilising, it’s insulting to her mental state – it’s demeaning to a woman who has fought for her mental and physical freedom.

Britney’s book was her opportunity to offer her side of the story when it came to her relationship with Justin Timberlake, after years of his narrative being used to further his career. The fact that a collaborator (of both Britney’s and Justin’s, we might add) chose to make disrespectful, misogynistic comments about limiting her freedom to speak proves how much further we have to go when it comes to empowering women to speak their truth about their relationships and bodies.

    Kevin Winter

What we would like to see is men – inside and outside of the music industry – putting their “respect for women” into practice, and into their words. Calling out sexist and abusive behaviour, not contributing to it. Empowering survivors of abuse like Britney Spears, not tearing them down to further their own patriarchal agenda. Believing women, not suggesting they’re speaking out for money and fame.

While an apology is great and all, each of Timbaland’s words carry a lot of weight. Perhaps he should choose them more carefully next time.

  • Why We Can’t Leave Britney Spears Alone

Why We Can’t Leave Britney Spears Alone

    [ad_1]

When teen Spears is questioned by Daly about her sexy schoolgirl outfits (wholesome, when you consider how routinely other interviewers asked her about her tits), she sounds like any normal teen whose parents don’t want them to leave the house wearing eyeliner. “All I did was tie up my shirt!” she says. “I’m wearing a sports bra under it. Sure, I’m wearing thigh-highs, but kids wear those—it’s the style. Have you seen MTV—all those [women] in thongs?”

Even though her brand was endorsed by adult male record executives, it was also adult men who then punished her for it. “I was never quite sure,” she writes, “what all these critics thought I was supposed to be doing—a Bob Dylan impression? I was a teenage girl from the south. I signed my name with a heart, I liked looking cute. Why did everyone treat me, even when I was a teenager, like I was dangerous?”

We tend to think she lost that All American Girl status when she started losing her mind, but from my seat, after reading The Woman In Me, that part of her story makes her more like us than ever. What woman wouldn’t go insane, given the circumstances? All of the harmful gender dynamics that defined the early aughts happened to not-famous girls and women too. I’ll never forget the first time I was sexualized by an adult man as a child; it wasn’t pleasant, but it also wasn’t recorded on TV and presented as cute. In The Woman in Me, Spears remembers appearing on Star Search, where host Ed MacMahon asked her, “You have the most adorable, pretty eyes—do you have a boyfriend?” She was ten at the time.

The inability to be free, to be yourself, to feel like you’re enough, is the great feminine problem. It’s humbling to know that the most famous pop star of her generation doesn’t get to rise above that, either. Even her dating history is somewhat sympathetic—an older guy with a girlfriend creepily sneaks into her house to kiss her when she’s in high school; another guy cheats on her (Justin Timberlake) and then makes critically-acclaimed art about how actually he was wronged; a predatory scumbag (Kevin Federline) cons her when she needs love most.

The best and most devastating parts of the book come when Spears pulls back from the details of what happened, diving into her emotions and taking her power back. It’s strongest when she explains the female rage behind the decision to shave her head, a move that was mocked and ridiculed in pop culture for decades.

“Shaving my head was a way of saying to the world: Fuck You. You want me to be pretty for you? Fuck you. You want me to be good for you? Fuck you. You want me to be your dream girl? Fuck you. I’d been the good girl for years, I’d smiled politely while TV show hosts leered at my breasts, while American parents said I was destroying their children by wearing a crop top, while executives patted my hand condescendingly and second guessed my career choices even though I’d sold millions of records, while my family acted like I was evil. I was sick of it.”

We’re fucking sick of it too, Britney. That’s why we’re buying your book.

  • “We Were All Over Each Other”: Britney Spears Recounts Two-Week Fling With Colin Farrell In New Memoir

“We Were All Over Each Other”: Britney Spears Recounts Two-Week Fling With Colin Farrell In New Memoir

    [ad_1]

Revelations from Britney Spearss love life continue to roll in thanks to pre-release copies of The Woman In Me making their way into the media universe. Colin Farrell, you’re up.

“Brawl is the only word for it—we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight,” Spears writes of their short-lived romance in her memoir, which Time obtained ahead of its official October 24 publication date.

Spears and the actor briefly connected in 2003 shortly after her very public breakup with Justin Timberlake, whom she called her first love. During her relationship with Timberlake, from 1999 to 2002, Spears became pregnant and then got an abortion at Timberlake’s urging, and was later broken up with via text message and subsequently portrayed as “a harlot” in the singer’s “Cry Me a River” music video, all of which she writes about in the forthcoming book.

Elsewhere in the memoir, Spears writes that Timberlake slept with “six or seven girls” in the weeks after their relationship “officially” ended, so she went out to have a little fun of her own in the midst of her heartbreak. “He was a girl’s dream,” she said of Timberlake. “I was in love with him.”

She writes that a “club promoter” friend set her up with Farrell, and they had a “two-week brawl.”

The two attended the premiere of Farrell’s movie The Recruits together, where Farrell insisted they weren’t dating and Spears reportedly dipped as soon as the cameras were gone.

“We’re not dating,” Farrell said at the time. “She’s a sweet, sweet girl. There’s nothing going on—just mates.”

Later that year, Spears would tell W Magazine, “Yes, I kissed him… He’s the cutest, hottest thing in the world—wooh!… But it was nothing serious.”

In her book, per Time, Spears writes of Farrell “for a brief moment in time, I did think there could be something there. The disappointments in my romantic life were just one part of how isolated I became. I felt so awkward all the time.”

“As I had before when I’d felt too attached to a man, I tried to convince myself in every way that it was not a big deal, that we were just having fun, that in this case, I was vulnerable because I wasn’t over Justin yet.”

Representatives for Britney Spears and Colin Farrell did not immediately return requests for comment.

  • Britney Spears Admits To Cheating On Justin Timberlake With Dancer

Britney Spears Admits To Cheating On Justin Timberlake With Dancer

    [ad_1]

More bombshell revelations are rolling out from Britney Spears’ upcoming memoir.

Just days after fans were surprised to learn the pop star had an abortion when she was dating Justin Timberlake, The Sun reported the book also addresses a longtime rumor that she was unfaithful during her relationship with the singer.

In “The Woman in Me,” Spears reportedly confesses to cheating on Timberlake with dancer and choreographer Wade Robson.

She said she cheated on Timberlake after finding out that he had slept around behind her back.

“We were out one night and we went to a Spanish bar. We danced and danced. I made out with him that night,” she shared of her brief fling with Robson, who later famously accused Michael Jackson of sexually abusing him as a child in an HBO documentary.

The “Toxic” crooner said that Timberlake subsequently “agreed to move past” her cheating, adding that she was “loyal to Justin” for years “with that one exception.”

Spears went on to claim in the book that Timberlake was also unfaithful during their three-year long relationship.

She wrote that the Grammy winner cheated on her with “another celebrity,” but refused to spill the woman’s name because she is now “married with children.”

Though the “Gimme More” singer didn’t cough up a name, eagle-eyed fans have since speculated that the unidentified woman could be singer Nicole Appleton from English girl group “All Saints” after an old newspaper clipping began making rounds across social media.

The clipping showed Timberlake and Appleton in the back of a car together after a boozy night out in 2000.

Spears, 41, and Timberlake, 42, became one of Hollywood’s most famous couples when they dated from 1999-2002.

Gossip that Spears’ infidelity ended their relationship kicked off after Timberlake released the hit breakup tune “Cry Me a River” following their split.

A woman with blonde hair was notably featured in the song’s music video, leading to speculation that Spears had stepped out on Timberlake.

Spears later welcomed two sons — Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17 — with her second husband, Kevin Federline, whom she married in 2004.

Timberlake went on to tie the knot with actor Jessica Biel in 2012. The pair share two sons; Silas, 8, and Phineas, 2.

On Tuesday, People revealed another major tidbit from Spears’ memoir. In the book, she alleges that Timberlake convinced her to get an abortion during their relationship because he “wasn’t happy” about her pregnancy and thought they were “too young.”

“I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby,” Spears reportedly wrote. “I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

She added: “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

Spears’ memoir, “The Woman in Me,” is due to be published Oct. 24.

  • Revisit the time Britney Spears called out ex-Justin Timberlake for using her for ‘attention and fame’

Revisit the time Britney Spears called out ex-Justin Timberlake for using her for ‘attention and fame’

    [ad_1]

In the ever-evolving saga of Britney Spears’ life, there have been countless twists and turns. One of the most intriguing chapters involved her high-profile relationship with Justin Timberlake, which ended in a messy and public breakup in 2002. Over the years, Britney has accused Justin of using her name for “attention and fame.” Let’s take a throwback journey to revisit the time Britney Spears called out her famous ex for exploiting their past romance.

The Cry Me a River controversy

The drama between Britney and Justin reached its peak with the release of Justin Timberlake‘s hit song Cry Me a River. The song not only featured an uncanny lookalike of Britney in its music video but also contained lyrics that strongly implied infidelity on her part. This ignited a media frenzy and fueled rumors that she was the cause of their breakup.

ALSO READ: ‘I always expected us to have a family…’: Britney Spears reveals she aborted Justin Timberlake and her baby because ‘he didn’t want to be a father’

In 2011, Britney Spears opened about the controversial music video during an interview with Rolling Stone. She revealed that Justin had called her, ostensibly to discuss reconciling, but also dropped the bombshell that she would be featured in the video. The decision to include her was presented as a minor detail, which she initially didn’t object to. However, as the video was unveiled, Britney had regrets. She stated, “I should’ve freakin’ said no to this shit!” In her view, it seemed like a “desperate attempt” to sell records. Despite her reservations, she acknowledged Justin’s cleverness, saying, “That was a great way to sell the record. He’s a smart guy.”

Accusations of using her name for fame

Justin Timberlake (INSTAGRAM & IMDB )

Fast forward to 2022, and Britney Spears revisited the issue on her Instagram, in a post that has since been deleted. She pointed out the parallel between her mother, Lynne Spears, releasing a memoir and Justin Timberlake releasing his debut solo album. She accused them both of using her name to gain “fame and attention.” This marked a rare and direct accusation against her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, for capitalizing on their past relationship to boost his career.

It’s worth noting that in early 2021, Justin Timberlake issued an apology, acknowledging that he had “benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.” This apology was a part of a broader reckoning within the entertainment industry regarding the treatment of women.

In conclusion, the drama between Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the early 2000s and its subsequent revisitation in 2022 highlights the complex dynamics of fame and relationships in the public eye.

Britney Spears Had an Abortion After Justin Timberlake Said He “Didn’t Want to Be a Father,” Memoir Reveals

    [ad_1]

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were the couple the whole world was talking about when they dated from 1999 to 2002, and two decades later, the former Mickey Mouse Club costars are making headlines once again.

Spears’s memoir, The Woman in Me, doesn’t hit shelves until next week, on October 24, but the revelations from the book about Spears’s life are already coming fast and furious. In a newly revealed passage from the book, Spears writes that she became pregnant with Timberlake’s child while they were dating. She got an abortion at Timberlake’s urging, she writes, according to a brief quote published by People.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy,” she wrote of the pregnancy. “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.”

“But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

“If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it,” she wrote of the abortion. “And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

“To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life,” she wrote of the abortion.

Spears eventually had two children with ex-husband Kevin Federline, 18-year-old Sean Preston and 17-year-old Jayden James. Her sons currently live in Hawaii with Federline. Spears and Timberlake began dating when Spears was 17 years old, and Timberlake was 18.

Vanity Fair has reached out to representatives for Spears and Timberlake for comment, as well as The Woman in Me publisher Simon & Schuster.

Rachel Bilson Remembers Botched Attempt At Flirting With Justin Timberlake

    [ad_1]

Actor Rachel Bilson says she once tried ― and failed ― to charm pop star Justin Timberlake back in the early 2000s.

The star of “The O.C.” explained how things went awry during an episode of the “Broad Ideas With Rachel Bilson” podcast, where she gently blamed co-host and fellow actor Olivia Allen for ruining her chances with the “Bye Bye Bye” singer.

“In our day, [Timberlake] was very big, right?” Bilson said. “Like the biggest. Sorry, no disrespect — he’s still very big. We were all at a party or something, and he was there, and I was so obsessed with him.”

Allen remembered Timberlake being drawn to her pal, explaining, “We were kicking it with him. We were making friends with him. [Bilson] went up to him, obviously, or he came up to [her].”

Allen recalled that she was fueled by a little too much liquid courage, saying she “got drunk and embarrassed” herself while trying to get JT’s attention.

“You want the truth. I was drunk and I [sat] in between them,” she revealed. “I was just drunk and wanted to keep talking to him.”

“There was no room. Olivia planted herself [between us], squeezed herself [in],” Bilson remembered.

However, a closer look reveals a heartwarming interaction that was far from confrontational.

Viral VMA video: A deceptive first impression

A viral video captured backstage at the 2023 VMAs seemed to depict Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake in a tense moment. The rapper, aged 28, and the “Mirrors” singer, aged 42, appeared to be engaged in a heated exchange. However, a reliable source has revealed that this initial impression was far from the truth.

According to a source People, “He said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you,’ and she said, ‘No, no, this doesn’t count, this doesn’t count. We gotta meet proper.’”

Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake’s friendly exchange

In the video, Megan Thee Stallion was seen having her hair touched up backstage when Justin Timberlake, along with his *NSYNC bandmates, walked by. What initially looked like tension turned out to be a friendly interaction. Megan waved an enthusiastic finger at Timberlake, who responded with a warm smile. Joey Fatone, a member of *NSYNC, was also seen sharing a laugh. The insider says that Megan was actually expressing her desire to meet Timberlake in a less chaotic setting, saying, “No, no, this don’t count, this don’t count. We gotta meet proper.’”

Justin Timberlake, on the other hand, reunited with his former *NSYNC bandmates, including Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Lance Bass, to present Taylor Swift with the award for Best Pop Video.

Taylor Swift, the recipient of the award, couldn’t contain her excitement upon seeing the *NSYNC reunion. She expressed her joy, saying, “I had your dolls. Like, are you doing something? What’s going to happen now … They’re going to do something, and I need to know what it is.” Swift also thanked the band, saying, “You’re pop personified, so to receive this from your golden pop hands is really … it’s too much. Thank you for the friendship bracelets.”

Netflix’s Reptile follows an aging detective who gets sucked into a mystery after the death of a local real estate agent. Although it sounds simple enough, the incident is getting to our detective, and everyone’s a suspect. The film stars the likes of Benicio del Toro, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Silverstone.

The movie also marks the directorial debut of Grant Singer, a noted music video director. You can watch the film’s trailer below:

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and by doing so dismantles the illusions in his own life.

Olds will recognize that del Toro and Silverstone are reuniting from the ’90s classic Excess Baggage. Del Toro had this to say about working with his former co-star again:

It was great reconnecting with her. She’s smart and she had great ideas. Alicia brought everything we wanted for the character and more.

Del Toro also spoke about the environment of the production itself.

The collaboration was a lot of fun. Once we knew where we needed the story to land, then the question becomes, ‘How do we get there? How do we make it interesting?’ We did research and tried to make it as real as possible. We talked about movies and storytelling with certain films as references. One that comes to mind is In Cold Blood.

Reptile premieres on Netflix on October 6

This Might Be the Most A-List Bridal Party of All Time

    [ad_1]

It would appear that Nina Dobrev, Justin Timberlake, Chelsea Handler, and NBA player Meyers Leonard all broke the number-one wedding etiquette rule and donned white for a ceremony. It’s cool though: it was at the request of the bride and groom.

The celebrities were among the wedding party at the Los Angeles nuptials of celebrity fitness trainer Ben Bruno and Nicole Bruno on July 22. The stars were invited, but bread was not: Nicole is the head honcho of gluten-free wellness blog NoBread.com. She is also an angel investor, according to People.

Dobrev posted a photo of the 10-person wedding party with the couple at the center of it all, beaming in all-white outfits. “Same time next week?” she asked in the caption.

Among other guests at the celebration, which was held at the Hotel Bel Air, were model Kate Upton and Timberlake’s wife, Jessica Biel. Ben shared a photo of himself as the filling in an Upton-Biel sandwich, captioning it, “What guys THINK is going to happen to them when they start lifting weights (i.e. attract girls).” The next photo in the carousel features the groomsmen, Timberlake included, fondling his arms. The caption continues: “what REALLY happens: a bunch of dudes complimenting you on your biceps.”

Fellow bridesmaid Kat Silver shared a snap on her feed of the bridesmaids relaxing barefoot in their full-length gowns at the hotel’s bar, drinks in hand.

Several of the attendees, including Upton and Handler, are clients of Ben’s, and have even shared testimonials on his website.

Dobrev was also tagged last week in a photo from fellow bridesmaid Mary Miller’s bachelorette party, proof that wedding season is truly upon us, even for celebrities.

  • What’s With Our Need For Nostalgia?

What’s With Our Need For Nostalgia?

    [ad_1]

I grew up during Disney Channel’s golden era — you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was the when Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs) were at their prime and peak Disney TV starring the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, the Sprouse twins, and more. In hindsight, it was wild. There has never been such a hotbed for stardom since Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera were all on the Mickey Mouse Club.

And, yes, as I continue growing up I miss having these lighthearted shows and movies to watch. Every so often, my roommates and I will binge Disney movies like
High School Musical or classics like The Princess Diaries. But lately, there’s been a shift.

Has anyone noticed that we as a society are lacking a little…creativity? I mean, sure, it’s completely normal to crave a little dose of your childhood here and there — who isn’t comforted by memories of your life before you had an overwhelming sense of anxiety. But I almost feel as though we’ve gotten
too comfortable with bringing back the old.

Some of the nostalgia-inducing events are
exciting. Think: the fervor for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour or The Jonas Brothers’ The Tour, where they play all of their old songs spanning their entire career. It’s exciting and it’s a good way to get fans of old and new in the room.

We’re also in an era of reboots galore. Take a short glance at any of your streaming platforms and you’ll see a lot of familiar titles. Former early 2000s favorites like
Zoey 101, iCarly, and That’s So Raven are finding themselves back on our television screens. And if you think that’s all…oh, boy.

Some reboots are reimaginations of the show…like
Gossip Girl with a new cast and fresh, young faces. While others are continuations of the show just in the future – think iCarly and Zoey 101 (the reboot being Zoey 102).

    And then, there’s Disney.

Disney is constantly trying to get the older generations into theaters, not only with Marvel, but with live action remakes of our favorite films. Over the past decade, we’ve seen versions of
Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and most recently, The Little Mermaid. And while I surely will watch out of curiosity and lack of alternatives, I’m always left feeling a little underwhelmed.

    Nostalgia-core is literally
everywhere. It’s in the way we dress, with Y2K trends consistently leading the pack. People are preferring jelly shoes and mini skirts over any other decades-inspired trend. But when do we border the line between nostalgia and overdoing something?

Maybe it’s because we went through a global pandemic for so many years, we are craving stability and childhood…going back to our roots and finding comfort in what we know after a lot of uncertainty.
Watching reboots of your fave show or movie can feel like the adult version of a pacifier.

Or maybe it’s because we have completely lost identity in today’s society…where we can’t thrive on anything but the past. Unoriginal ideas cycling back into the trendscape just because we can’t think of anything new.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. If something is getting those viewers in and bringing in the money, why wouldn’t they keep rebooting shows? Why wouldn’t Disney just make live action versions of their entire filmography? That way, they can release one original and make it really amazing in the interim.

One thing I know for sure is that trends recycle all the time. There was a time not so long ago where anything low-rise was considered a fashion crime and you wouldn’t dare wear Crocs out of your house unironically. But in the early 2000s, and subsequently in 2023, you would be considered right on trend.

And while the Disney films will always be successful in some capacity, I don’t know if every show needs a reboot. Some shows ended where they ended, and that’s how it should stay. Honestly, I feel like I’m getting bored too easily, I already know the plotline of everything coming out!

    With popular shows like
Succession and Ted Lasso in their final episodes forever, we are met with the realization that we will soon run out of original content if we keep rebooting everything. And yes, I get that a reboot is still somehow original if it’s a continuation of the series…you know that’s not my point here.

So, I’m left with the question: when is it time to let the past be….the past?
