    Friends remains one of the most rewatched—and highly quoted—sitcoms of all time. But some of its 10 seasons have aged poorly since the series ended in 2004, a fact star Jennifer Aniston pointed out in a recent interview.

    “There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive,” she told the Associated Foreign Press (via Yahoo). “There were things that were never intentional and others…well, we should have thought it through, but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now.” 

    While promoting Murder Mystery 2, her upcoming Netflix sequel with Adam Sandler, Aniston spoke of the ways “comedy has evolved,” saying, “now it’s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life.”

    Despite the show’s beloved status in TV history, many of its story lines veered into territory that’s become less widely accepted with time—including a multitude of homophobic and fatphobic jokes.

    One of the show’s creators, Marta Kauffman, has acknowledged that her series was a product of its time. Last year, she told the Los Angeles Times she regretted the near-erasure of Black characters on Friends, and said that she’d given her alma mater, Brandeis University, $4 million to endow a professorship in its African and African American Studies department. Kauffman then appeared on the BBC World Service show The Conversation and apologized for misgendering the character of Chandler’s trans parent, Helena. Kathleen Turner, who played the role, said in 2019 she wouldn’t have taken the part today because there are other “real people able to do [the part].”

    Although Aniston wasn’t asked about any specific episodes, she did defend her show by asserting that bigots were often the punch line. “You could joke about a bigot and have a laugh. That was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were, and now we’re not allowed to do that,” Aniston said. “Everybody needs funny! The world needs humor! We can’t take ourselves too seriously. Especially in the United States. Everyone is far too divided.”

    Jennifer Aniston revealed that her frequent co-star Adam Sandler does not approve of her romantic life.

    The Friends star made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to promote Murder Mystery 2, her new film with Sandler, and she revealed that the comedian can’t help but tease her over her taste in men. The two stars first met at Jerry’s Famous Deli on Ventura Boulevard when they were just 20 and 22 years old. And when asked if they’ve given each other advice over the years, she said, “If I get anything from him, it’s, ‘What are you doing?’ Usually based on someone I’m dating…[he says] ‘What are you doing? What’s wrong with you?’” After a brief interlude during which she and Fallon attempted to do their best Sandler impressions, the actor added that she “very much love[s] to take care of” the Billy Madison star when they work together. “He’s so concerned with taking care of everybody else, which he really does, and he doesn’t take care of himself. I’m sorry to call you out on national television, Adam, but you have to know this,” she explained. Aniston added that she keeps “a little arsenal of herbs in my trailer and I make him smoothies when I can and give him all sorts of Chinese herbs when he is exhausted. I’m like the mobile pharmacy. Yeah, I’m the set medic.” 

    The actor showed her support for Sandler in another way over the weekend, attending the Mark Twain Prize ceremony on Sunday night in Washington, D.C. where he was being honored for his achievements in comedy. She told Fallon of the experience, “It was more emotional than I expected because I hadn’t been to the Kennedy Center before. So that was my first time.” When the talk show host noted that Sandler even dressed up for the occasion, the actor joked, “He kind of looks like he’s just playing dress up. He kind of just seems very uncomfortable.” During the ceremony, Aniston and fellow longtime Sandler collaborator Drew Barrymore gave a little performance during which they shared all of the benevolent things the Big Daddy star has done for them over the years, which turned out to be exactly the same list of things. They joked that perhaps they don’t need Sandler after all. “We should do that movie that you and I have been talking about,” Aniston said, to which Barrymore replied, “You mean the one where we don’t need that goofy boyfriend?”

    Sandler and Aniston’s latest project is the sequel to their 2019 Netflix original by the same name, catching up with their characters Nick and Audrey four years after the first film. According to the film’s synopsis, the duo are now “full-time detectives struggling to get their private-eye agency off the ground.” Aniston added during her interview with Fallon, “When you meet back up with us, we’re not doing that great. So we get invited to a wonderful wedding of someone wonderful, we say, ‘We need a break, we need a vacation.’ And that’s where our mistakes happen.”

So I was just stuck with being on Instagram. It doesn’t come naturally.”

    “I’m really happy that we got to experience growing up, being a teenager, being in our 20s without this social media aspect. Look, the internet, great intentions, right? Connect people socially, social networking. It goes back to how young girls feel about themselves, compare and despair,” she told the publication.

    John Aniston, a veteran actor known for his work on the daytime drama “Days of Our Lives,” has died, his daughter, actress Jennifer Aniston, shared on Monday.

    He was 89.

    “You were one of the most beautiful humans I ever knew. I am so grateful that you went soaring into the heavens in peace – and without pain. And on 11/11 no less! You always had perfect timing,” Jennifer Aniston wrote in a statement shared on Instagram. “That number will forever hold an even greater meaning for me now.”

    The “Friends” star began her post by writing “Sweet papa…⁣ John Anthony Aniston.”⁣

    The actor appeared in numerous TV series and nearly three thousand episodes of “Days of Our Lives” over the course of his long career.

    “I’ll love you till the end of time,” Aniston concluded her caption. “Don’t forget to visit.”

    Aniston was born John Anastassakis on the Greek island of Crete in 1933. He emigrated to the US when he was 10, and his family shortened their surname to Aniston.

    Before he became a soap star, Aniston served in the US Navy and appeared in an off-Broadway musical, Soap Opera Digest reported.

    He got his big break when he was cast in the long-running soap “Love of Life” and later “Search for Tomorrow.” But he didn’t become a household name until he joined “Days of our Lives” in 1985 as “romantic villain” Victor Kiriakis, a criminal with a penchant for charming the women of Salem, Illinois.

    Kirakis, like Aniston, hailed from Greece but was much more sinister: He was a mobster who ran a prostitution ring in town. Over the course of the series, Kiriakis experienced several changes of heart and bounced back and forth between his lawbreaking gangster persona and loving family man hoping to win back his adult children. All told, Aniston appeared on the series on and off for 37 years.

    During his stints on soaps, Aniston opened a restaurant in New York, divorced his first wife, Nancy Dow, and married costar Sherry Rooney and moved to Los Angeles, according to a 1986 Soap Opera Digest profile of Aniston.

    Aniston was surprised his daughter planned to follow him into show business. In a 2019 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Aniston said he found out his daughter had been calling his agent to ask for auditions while he was appearing on “Search for Tomorrow.”

    “I told her, ‘You don’t want to be in show business. Show business stinks,’” he said. “I tell everybody who wants to be an actor, don’t be an actor, be something else. Because if my telling (them) to stay out of show business is gonna keep them out, they shouldn’t be in it in the first place.”

    Of course, Aniston’s daughter didn’t listen, and went on to star in one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, and become one of the most famous actresses in the world.

    In a 1990 interview with E! News alongside his daughter, Aniston offered both fatherly praise and sobering guidance: “Jennifer is a natural talent,” he said to his daughter’s embarrassment, but reminded her that talent doesn’t always result in a long career.

    But Aniston’s own career in soaps lasted more than 50 years, and in June, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Emmy at the Daytime Emmy Awards. He didn’t attend the ceremony, but his daughter toasted him in a moving speech.

    “For over 30 years, his dedication to (“Days”) has gained him respect and admiration of his fellow actors, deep friendships and thrilled millions of fans around the world,” she said. “His career is literally the definition of lifetime achievement.”

    Jennifer Aniston has opened up about the struggles she faced while trying to have a baby, and is also hitting back at the tabloids who relentlessly pontificated on the status of her uterus.

    “It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,” the actor said in an interview with Allure magazine for its December cover story.

    Aniston, 53, is best known for her role as Rachel Greene on NBC’s smash sitcom Friends. The series skyrocketed her to fame, which came with the unfortunate scrutiny and rumours about why she was not having children.

    For years she was accused of prioritizing her career over starting a family, and the tabloids kept their eyes fixated on her waistline, trying to determine if her midsection was growing.

    “It was absolute lies, (the) narrative that I was just selfish, I just cared about my career,” she told Allure.

    “And God forbid a woman is successful and doesn’t have a child. And the reason my husband left me, why we broke up and ended our marriage, was because I wouldn’t give him a kid,” she said, addressing the rumours that Justin Theroux divorced her in 2018 because she wouldn’t have a child with him.

    The truth, said Aniston, is that she was going through some “hard s–t” in her 30s and 40s, trying every possible means to conceive a child.

    “All the years and years and years of speculation … it was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it,” she shared.

    Aniston, currently starring in the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, explained that she was infuriated by all the speculation over her body, which led her to write an opinion post for HuffPost in 2016, taking the tabloids to task for fixating on her stomach.

    “For the record, I am not pregnant,” she wrote for HuffPost. “What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of ‘journalism,’ the ‘First Amendment’ and ‘celebrity news.’

    “The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty.”

    She told Allure she “got so frustrated.”

    “Hence that op-ed I wrote,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’ve just got to write this because it’s so maddening and I’m not superhuman to the point where I can’t let it penetrate and hurt.’”

    She said she never spoke out about her challenges with IVF because “I feel like there’s so little that I get to keep to myself.”

    She said by speaking about it now, she feels “like I’m coming out of hibernation. I don’t have anything to hide.”

    It’s not the first time Aniston has gotten candid about her frustration with the media. In 2017, she told Glamour magazine that if she could ban any one word or phrase from tabloids, it would be “a picture of me with a hand over my stomach, saying ‘Finally Pregnant!’”

    Despite everything, Aniston told Allure, “I have zero regrets.”

    She added that she’s “proud of my wrinkles and grey hair,” and that she’s in a great phase of her life. The pressure to have children has passed, which she said is very freeing.

    Jennifer Aniston shared some of the details from her difficult fertility journey for the first time, but clarified that she is ultimately happy that she didn’t have kids and put her energy into her career instead.

    The Friends star revealed in Allure‘s December issue that she tried for many years to conceive, but “it was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road.” That challenging road involved multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF, all while the tabloids furiously speculated about whether or not she was secretly pregnant. Aniston continued, “All the years and years and years of speculation…It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.”

    But while the moment for her to have children may have passed, the actor confirmed, “I have zero regrets.” She added, “I actually feel a little relief now because there is no more, ‘Can I? Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.’ I don’t have to think about that anymore.” But Aniston noted that tabloid headlines regarding her decision whether or not to have a child were hurtful, what was equally painful was “the narrative that I was just selfish.” She said, “I just cared about my career. And God forbid a woman is successful and doesn’t have a child. And the reason my husband left me, why we broke up and ended our marriage, was because I wouldn’t give him a kid. It was absolute lies. I don’t have anything to hide at this point.” Aniston explained, “I got so frustrated.     Matthew Perry is admitting that he experienced the final moments of his life-changing “Friends” career much differently than his castmates.

    In an excerpt from his new memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” obtained by BuzzFeed News, Perry reflected on the lack of emotion he felt the moment the last episode of the beloved sitcom wrapped.

    The final scene of the series features all of the main characters in one of the show’s most popular sets — Monica’s (Courteney Cox) apartment.

    In the emotional scene, movers are clearing out the rest of Monica’s belongings as the characters reflect on all the memories they’ve had in the now-empty space. The tension of the scene is broken by Perry’s snarky Chandler, who gets the final line in the series.

    When Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) asks if everyone has some time to get some coffee — an activity the group of friends often did at their hangout spot Central Perk — Chandler hilariously replies: “Sure! … Where?”

    “It was January 23, 2004,” Perry recalls in his memoir. “The keys on the counter, a guy who looked a lot like Chandler Bing said, ‘Where?’”

    “‘Embryonic Journey’ by Jefferson Airplane played, the camera panned to the back of the apartment door, then Ben, our first AD, and very close friend, shouted for the last time, ‘That’s a wrap,’ and tears sprang from almost everyone’s eyes like so many geysers,” he writes.

    But Perry says he wasn’t feeling the waterworks.

    “We had made 237 episodes, including this last one, called, appropriately enough, ‘The Last One.’ Jennifer Aniston was sobbing — after a while, I was amazed she had any water left in her entire body. Even Matt LeBlanc was crying,” he writes. “But I felt nothing.”

    “I couldn’t tell if that was because of the opioid buprenorphine I was taking, or if I was just generally dead inside,” he adds.

    Perry has been open about the substance abuse problems he had throughout the filming of “Friends.” In 2013, he revealed on ABC News that he struggled with depression, alcohol and prescription drug abuse throughout his tenure on the show.

    “Mostly it was drinking, you know, and opiates,” Perry said at the time. “I think I was pretty good at hiding it but, you know, eventually people were aware.”

    Apparently, those who were aware included his co-star Aniston, who, Perry revealed in October, confronted him about his drinking.

    “Yeah, imagine how scary of a moment that was,” Perry told Diane Sawyer. “She was the one who reached out the most. I’m really grateful to her for that.”

    In his new memoir, Perry said that, after the final episode of “Friends” wrapped, he decided to go for a walk with the rest of the cast, crew and his girlfriend at the time around the Warner Bros lot. His final moments with those whom he worked with for so long echo the numbness he felt while others mourned the end of the iconic sitcom.

    “We said our various goodbyes, agreeing to see each other soon in the way that people do when they know it’s not true, and then we headed out to my car,” he concludes in the except.
