  • Summer’s Ending: Here’s Your 2024 Summer Playlist

    Summer’s Ending: Here’s Your 2024 Summer Playlist

I hate to say it…I hate to even acknowledge it…but it’s the truth: the summer is ending. Sure, the solstice technically goes until late September, but we know the real summer ends after Labor Day.

And while we soak up these last few peaceful weeks of Summer Fridays and vacations on the beach, the looming threat of the fall and colder weather is quickly approaching. We avoid the very thought of it like the plague.

But, I want to make the most of the end of summer 2024. When you look back at it, we’ve had a crazy summer in terms of pop culture:
the rise of Chappell Roan, the reign of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poet’s Department, Charli XCX teaching us what it means to have a BRAT Summer, Billie Eilish’s enormous hit, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER,” and of course, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please” to soundtrack our summer.

Yes, the pop girlies have ruled the scene this summer…alongside major country vibes with albums from Zach Bryan, hit songs like “The Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, and even fresh country additions from Lana Del Rey and Quavo with their single “Tough.”

The Song of Summer 2024 may forever be up for debate, with a few top contenders already mentioned. Former President Barack Obama just released his Summer Playlist, and it got us thinking.

What I’m looking for are songs that are perfect for closing out the summer. Different from my usual Weekend Playlist, these songs aren’t necessarily new…but they’re still astonishing.

Some were released this year, and some just perfectly embody the end of the summer. If you’re already feeling a tad nostalgic and blue about summer 2024, here’s a playlist that’ll help you feel better:

    “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter

Let’s start it off with Sabrina, who is becoming one of the biggest pop stars in the world as we speak. Her new album —
Short ‘n Sweet, out August 15 — and she’s somehow still eligible for Best New Artist at the Grammy’s this year?

“Espresso” is an awesome start to the playlist because it also kicked our summer off with a bang. With fun little lyrics like “that’s that me espresso,” we can’t help but hit replay each time the song ends.

Spotify says, “Since June, the song has spent 20 days at #1 on Spotify’s global charts – topping 25 regional charts in countries like Australia, Malaysia, Jordan and Singapore.”

    “HOTTOGO” by Chappell Roan

It’s the summer of Chappell Roan, we can’t even lie. Her insane rise to superstardom deserves to be marked in history books. Thousands flock to see her perform at festivals before it gets too tough to buy her tickets on Ticketmaster.

With hit songs like “Good Luck, Babe!” and “HOTTOGO” from her album,
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, have certainly soundtracked our summer. She’s one of the most exciting artists we’ve seen in forever, so of course we had to include this banger.

Spotify data says, “The song saw its biggest spike of the summer on June 10 (globally), the day after her
Gov Ball set in New York City.”

    “Back On 74” by Jungle

This song is viral on social media because of its feel-good vibes. I love any Jungle song this summer because they keep it lighthearted, with a bit of a nostalgic, retro feel to their sound.

It’s an exceptional mix of modern and classic, and “Back On 74” delivered fantastic energy all summer long. If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that Jungle can make a cohesive album throughout.

“Guess (Remix)” by Charli xcx and Billie Eilish

We are totally having a BRAT Summer, and when Charli and Billie collabed on this “Guess” remix…the world felt it.

When two representatives of today’s culture and music industry come together to create a fun, sexy track that combines pop and electronic music in the best way…it just works. This remix is like a shock of energy to the system from the second you turn it on.

Especially with Eilish and Charli having such huge summer albums, this feels like an acknowledgement that the music industry is going to be okay…and they’re in complete control.

“BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish

Obviously, we had to mention Billie Eilish’s solo work: her third album,
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, is a complete masterpiece. A how-to on production and high-quality vocals, Billie Eilish and her brother, FINNEAS, are up there with the best — and youngest — singer-songwriter-producers in the industry.

“BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is one of the singles on the album. A viral success that constantly tops charts and breaks records, this song is nothing short of sensational. It’s proof that Billie gets better with age, using all of her knowledge so far and channeling it into her latest album.

According to Spotify, “Billie had a refreshing return to tempo this summer with this breezy summer hit. A leading track from her third studio album, the song reached a fever pitch after a poignant performance at the summer games closing ceremony – quickly rising to #1 on Spotify’s global charts with over 678M streams and counting.”

“She’s Gone, Dance On” by Disclosure

Year after year, Disclosure gives us countless dance tracks to highlight our summers. They’re highly regarded in the house industry as juggernauts who know how to get people up and dancing.

“She’s Gone, Dance On” was previewed at
Coachella by Dom Dolla, as the American Royal Couple — Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift — danced in the crowd. Shortly after, the song was released to the public and we haven’t stopped listening to it since.

    “360” by Charli xcx

Again, we can’t mention a Charli remix without an original
BRAT song. “360” is an introduction to what it really means to have a BRAT Summer. It’s carefree, fun-loving, and club-ready.

It makes us want to let loose and forget about our problems for a while. Charli XCX has started a movement, and solidified herself as our fearless BRAT leader.

“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey

There seriously hasn’t been a time this summer when I’ve been out at a bar and this hasn’t played. I would be biased if I didn’t include Shaboozey’s song in this playlist, because it truly has been everywhere. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is his follow-up after a massive feature on Beyonce’s
    COWBOY CARTER.

Spotify data suggests that since June, the song has hit #1 on Spotify’s Charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and the US and has been #1 on Billboard for six weeks so far. It reached #1 on Spotify’s US Chart for the first time on July 4th, proving it to be the perfect summer holiday anthem.”

What the song does well is capturing everyone’s attention early on and opening up into a full-out stomp-and-holler country song that we all love. It’s a
summer of country for a reason, and this is great for country fans and non-fans alike.

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

And we’re back with another Weekend Playlist! Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever grow tired of making cute little playlists for everyone to enjoy, but truly it never gets old. Especially when each week there’s new music released by artists everywhere.

Instead of searching through countless Spotify and Apple Music New Music Friday playlists and checking social media for the hottest new tracks, I collect the best of the best to make it easy on you. Yes, I do all the hard work and you just sit back and enjoy.

As we soak up the last few weeks of sunshine and Summer Fridays, there’s nothing you need more than new music to get you through. And, as promised, we have a whole playlist’s worth of new music released today, August 16.

So, if you’re ready for the weekend already like I am…here’s a new playlist filled with new music! As always, let’s get listening.

    Hozier- “Nobody’s Soldier”

There isn’t much to say about Hozier’s angelic vocals that hasn’t been said already. He’s lyrically complex, weaving tales and transcendentalism into his music with every new single. Now, he’s here with a trilogy of singles and each is more delicious than the next. My personal favorite, however, is “Nobody’s Soldier.”

Almost gospel, Hozier builds this dynamic track into a crescendo of vocals, heightening beats, and an orchestral backing that makes this perfect. It’s equal parts stomp-and-holler and indie folk, everything you love about Hozier…but refined, mature, and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.

Tiesto, AFROJACK, MC Ambush- “Light It Up”

We needed a huge EDM song for the playlist this week, and a few major names in house music stepped up for us. “Light It Up” is high energy from the very start, perfect for your pregames or when you need to get amped up. Seriously, this song is made for the club.

Tiesto and AFROJACK are two of the biggest DJ’s out there right now, which is why this collaboration is all the more exciting. They know what they’re doing, and it shows with this track.

Duke Dumont, Clemintine Douglas- “Ain’t Giving Up”

High energy and house driven, Duke Dumont has always made bangers. However, by adding Clemintine Douglas’ strong, electrifying vocals makes this track all the better. It’s great for clubs or intense workouts, getting your heart pumping as Douglas reiterates that she isn’t giving up on her lover.

Duke Dumont is a titan in the electronic dance industry for a reason, and they’ve remained relevant by creating refreshing, yet consistent music. “Ain’t Giving Up” reminds us the summer isn’t truly over, and we can’t get enough of this track already.

    Post Malone, Jelly Roll- “Losers”

And so the summer of country music continues with Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion album out today. He’s got collabs with major country hitters on this album like Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, and more. But specifically, we’re here to talk about “Losers” featuring Jelly Roll.

A feel good song, “Losers” blends the voices of the two and melds them into one silky song. It’s reminiscent of slow summer days spent with friends and family, and the perfect addition to this playlist.

Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars- “Die With A Smile”

They’re baaaaaack. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars are household names when it comes to music, we’ve basically grown up listening to them. Any song they have is guaranteed to be a hit, so when they come together…it’s magic. “Die With A Smile” is a sign of the times for the duo…both a culmination of their vocal power and ability to write a hit track no matter what.

Expect this one to be a radio favorite, as both musicians are giving us all they have. It’s a mellow, yet hard-hitting ballad that brings out the best in both of them. It’s ethereal the way they can work with each other’s voices so well, but that’s what you get when you’ve conquered your respective sides of the industry.

    Elle Darlington- “summer crush”

Fun-loving, an easy listen, bubblegum bedroom pop. That’s what Elle Darlington delivers with “summer crush”- it’s a catchy song about a summer fling…and every time I hear an Elle Darlington song, I’m reminded we’re in good hands when it comes to pop music. Darlington is like a breath of fresh air, and “summer crush” is reminiscent of a young Ariana Grande.

You’ll find yourself easily dancing along to “summer crush”, singing “I don’t wanna be alone” over and over with her. Again, summer isn’t over until we say it is. This song was made for the sunshine and good vibes.

Foster the People- “Paradise State of Mind”

In their first album in three years, Foster the People hasn’t missed a beat (literally.) “Paradise State of Mind” leans heavy on the synthy, indie sound that we know and love, while transporting us throughout a groovy, well-produced track. It’s one of my favorites on the album for a reason.

The eponymous track is a statement: they’re back and they’re better than ever. It’s a mixture of 70’s sounds with extremely modern twists. A thrilling listen til the very end.

  • Fred Again.. Concert Review: You’ll Want to See Fred Again and Again and Again and Again

Fred Again.. Concert Review: You’ll Want to See Fred Again and Again and Again and Again

“Fred’s fans are the best in the world,” said Leif Vollebeck, the opener for Fred Again..’s 3-show run at Stanford’s Frost Amphitheater. “They love music so much.”

Undoubtedly, that was the energy at Frost. Even in the heat, music fans came in droves to watch Gen Z’s favorite DJ spin songs about loneliness and love and turn them into communal artifacts.

Three nights at the 8,000-person capacity Northern California venue sold out in mere minutes, so it’s no wonder the crowd was worked up into a frenzy for Fred. Some concert-goers were experienced Fred devotees who had seen him 45+ times. Others were experiencing Fred Again.. for the first time. But when the lights came on, and Fred took the stage — starting the show simply sitting at a piano with a mic — multiple cameras projected his face onscreen. We were enraptured as if it was the first time.

Perhaps this is part of Fred’s charm: his ability to make every show feel like your first, which goes to explain his meteoric rise to fame and his cultish following of music lovers.

But just how did this DJ take over the internet and go from small shows to headlining stadiums seemingly out of nowhere?

Fred Again..’s Meteoric Rise: How did Fred Again.. Get So Famous?

It’s hard to believe that Fred Again..’s landmark Boiler Room performance was only two years ago. Boiler Room is to EDM artists and DJs what Tiny Desk is to indie and alt performers — it can change your life overnight.

But that’s not to say that Fred is an overnight success. He’s been working on his music since he was a kid. It just didn’t always sound like this.

Before shifting to pop music and later EDM, Fred Again.. was a classical composer. Yup — the man making beats on a computer studied classical music. But it’s this bedrock, not to mention classical music’s discipline, the precision, and technical skills that are drilled into you (I’ve seen Whiplash), that gives him a solid foundation in the genre.

It also doesn’t hurt that his vision and his sound were supported by none other than Brian Eno — his godfather. That’s right, Fred Again.. is a nepo baby. His family are wealthy British old money and while his parents aren’t in the creative industries, he’s related to the creators of the James Bond franchise.

If this surprises you, it’s because Fred manages to stay humble and down to earth. While I love some nepo babies’s eccentricities — Dakota Johnson talking about her need for 10 hours of sleep is unforgettable — Fred.. has built a dedicated fanbase by putting his head down and churning out song after song.

But how did he transition from classical music to the DJ scene? With Brian Eno as his mentor, he’s always been immersed in the music industry and collaborated with megastars in pop music. He’s listed on the credits for people from Ed Sheeran to Skrillex. These aren’t just business relationships, they’re friendships that he maintains today. With those accolades and a fine reputation, he became a massive name behind the scenes while building his own audience.

During the early days of the pandemic, his expertise at forging connections was channeled into livestream DJ sets. It can be tough to sustain the energy of a DJ set when there’s no real audience, but Fred’s enthusiasm and genuine joy on stage can’t help but draw people in. Even over livestreams, it’s contagious.

Dropping new tracks about COVID during the pandemic made Fred Again.. a household name — literally. By the time people were finally venturing out of their homes, he was booking impressive gigs like Coachella. Playing Coachella as your first US show is unheard of. But this supercharged his rise to superstardom. Combined with the now-legendary Boiler Room set around the same time? The rest is history.

Where to see Fred Again.. — And how to get Fred Again.. Tickets

Cut to: 2024. With his unconventional background, it should be no surprise that Fred Again.. continues to take audacious risks. And they’ve all paid off. And rejecting industry norms makes him even more GOATed to Gen Z fans who are disillusioned with industry politics and crave artists who feel real.

Instead of tours and frequent collaborations, he does is pop up shows. Everything Fred Again.. does feels instantaneous — even if they take months of planning.

Take his upcoming show at the LA Memorial Coliseum, for example. Announced just days before curtains, Fred Again.. sold out the 77,000-capacity venue close to instantaneously. Despite the detailed planning, he teased the performance just days before announcing the show. The June 14th show is his first stadium show ever and according to Fred’s social media it promises to be “the maddest live show we’ve ever tried to do so far.”

It follows another landmark show for the DJ, who recently played San Francisco’s Civic Plaza with frequent collaborator and mentor — Skrillex. As the largest public space in San Francisco’s downtown, Civic Plaza has a 20,000 capacity. The entire crowd was alive with Fred’s incandescent energy. Especially when he brought out surprise guest, Anderson .Paak to perform their brand-new song, “places to be.”

The June 12th show might also include surprise guests from collaborators and friends. But even if it’s just Fred.. and his decks, there’s nothing like his presence on stage. And after seeing him once, you’ll want to see him Again, and Again, and Again.

  • Introducing The Real Becky Hill

    Introducing The Real Becky Hill

TW: This article contains mentions of sexual assault.

A few months ago, I sat with Becky Hill backstage before her sold-out Brooklyn Steele performance. As we chatted about her collaborations and the struggle of being taken seriously as a solo artist, I could feel Hill’s passion. She’s an artist who takes her craft very seriously, someone who’s both humble and fiery all at once, with a voice that can bring an entire room together.

Now, as I sit listening to Becky’s album a month before it’s released into the world for the critics and fans to pick apart and devour, I remember her desire to create real drum and bass music. I remember her promises of a record in the works, but I had no idea that it would be so powerful. The new album in question, Believe Me Now?, is a perfect summation of Becky Hill’s already illustrious career.

Sure, she was discovered on season one of The Voice UK, but she’s also the only Voice contestant to score a #1 UK single. Despite mega-hit features on essential chart-topping house tracks like “Crazy What Love Can Do” with David Guetta, “Lose Control” with MEDUZA and Goodboys, “Gecko (Overdrive)” with Oliver Heldens, and “HISTORY” with Joel Corry…Becky Hill’s voice has been the main event- deserving of shining on its own, and not just because a male DJ is attached to the track.

Which brings us to now: the release of her third and resoundingly best album, Believe Me Now? The album pushes boundaries: intertwining her classic, beloved drum-and-bass style with powerful ballads, sprinkling in her classic dance club roots with honest, vulnerable lyricism. It’s a sign of maturity and growth as a vocalist that Hill digs so deep within her songs, reflecting on heartache, love, and all the struggles she’s endured throughout her life.

Songs like “Swim” will be instant favorites for those who love Becky’s classic upbeat dance moments…but songs like “True Colours” give us a glimpse into a darker time where Hill details her experience with being sexually assaulted and her healing process.

Believe Me Now? proves that Becky Hill indeed is a voice of our generation. She’s left it all on the table, showing her real self with no holding back, no bull…just Becky. The album rips her away from “The Voice contestant” or “feature artist” and into a realm of her own: one where we know who the real Becky Hill is and her music alone is what matters.

And 2024 just may be her year: with the new album coming out May 31 and a US tour looming in November…we’re ready to see what else Becky Hill has in store. It feels like she has it all figured out in terms of who she wants to be as an artist and who she is as a woman…which is why Believe Me Now? is an instantaneous classic. You can listen to the album here:

Ahead of Becky Hill’s album release, I spoke to her about the real Becky Hill, dealing with her trauma, and more. Check it out below!

PD: The title of the album, Believe Me Now?, seems to serve the message that you’re not messing around, you’re the real deal. Do you think your voice has finally been heard? Is this album the real Becky Hill?

BH: Ah thank you so much! so lovely to speak to you guys again & I’m so glad you like the album!! This album has definitely felt like the coming of age of a lost girl that’s grown into a woman! I feel the most collected & comfortable in my own skin, like the hard work I’ve put into my career is finally starting to pay off & this album really reflects where I am in my life!

PD: From starting on The Voice to now, what have you learned about yourself as an artist and a songwriter?

BH: I guess before The Voice I was used to writing songs on my own in my bedroom & when I joined the music industry I started writing with other people. When lockdown happened I wasn’t sure if I could even write songs on my own anymore but I absolutely could. I wrote a couple of drum & bass songs on my own (“Hold On” – Netsky & “Here For You” – Wilkinson) & when starting this next album I wasn’t sure if I still had things to say, but I definitely did, they just grew with me. This album showed me how lonely I’ve been feeling & actually, on the business side of things, how determined I am to continue & build on the success I’ve had so far.

PD: The track “True Colours” written with Lauren Aquilina is about your experiences with sexual assault. I know it can be difficult to open up about traumatic experiences in your music, but what made you do it with Believe Me Now?

BH: I had taken all the steps of healing that I needed. I confronted the rapist, told my old friends, reported it to the police, had my old friends validate & apologize to me & now release a song about it. It’s felt like the final piece to the puzzle, being able to talk about something I used to feel so much pain & shame around & now to have released all that & show the world there was never anything for me to feel ashamed of in the first place has been so powerful. I spoke to my therapist about it last week, I guess I didn’t realize how much it had affected me speaking about it, she called it ‘the shame hangover’ & promised me that this was going to help others. “Self Esteem” is on the record too who has been dealing & talking about her experiences of sexual assault for a while now, so it’s been incredibly useful to have another artist to guide me through publicly speaking about such a sensitive subject.

PD: These feel like some of your most emotionally vulnerable records…and yet you balance them perfectly with dance and house elements. Growing up in the dance community, what about it inspired your career?

BH: Thanks!! That’s exactly the angle I was trying to create when making this album! It was the stories that my brother would tell of going to raves & having the best nights. The emotions I would feel that I didn’t know I had at such a young age that dance music would give me. The community of friends I had that were all so passionate about new releases on labels & artists & festivals. I loved all of it. It felt at its most prolific at the time I was discovering myself & my own taste in music. Dance has really changed my life, soundtracked it & taught me so much

PD: This album showcases Becky Hill alone, not just who you can be on a collaboration. What was important to you while making this album and creating more solo work?

BH: I guess I’ve always had different battles. Being a contestant on The Voice, or being a feature artist or not being able to release a song without having a feature on my record. I wanted to create a fully deep rooted dance pop album that showed I didn’t need anyone else featuring, that I could be a dance artist in my own right & that us girls can do it just as well, if not better than the boys!

PD: Your headline tour starts in June. What are you most looking forward to?

BH: Playing the new stuff!! I’m so glad I get to go out with new singles that people may not have heard already & show them the new stuff! The best part is seeing streams go up after gigs which shows that people want to listen back at home too, such a great feeling & I can’t wait to see everybody having a great time, that’s what my summers all about!

  • EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: R3HAB Talks Collaborating With Jason Derulo & More

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: R3HAB Talks Collaborating With Jason Derulo & More

When R3HAB and Jason Derulo first stitched their music together on their first collab, they knew they had something special. Six years ago, two idols in their respective genres decided that not only could they make good music together with R3HAB’s remix of Derulo’s “Goodbye”…but they instantly understood this was the start of a lasting relationship where they’d create hit after hit for years.

    Two years later in 2020,
R3HAB hopped on Derulo’s “Take You Dancing” for another official remix…and then again in 2024, he hopped on “Spicy Margarita.” Now, we have the first official original release from Jason Derulo and R3HAB with their sexy pop-dance record, “Animal.”

“Animal” is the perfect song to dance to with your friends this summer. When you pair Jason Derulo’s dreamy vocals with R3HAB’s proven ability to create a hit house track, you know you have a masterpiece on your hands. You can listen to the track here:

For the past 15 years, R3HAB has honed his craft and seemingly perfected the art of the remix. He’s breathed new life into songs by the biggest artists in the world: Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Sia, and many, many more. And it’s not because of luck, R3HAB has spent years perfecting his style of progressive house music.

He has a discography that most artists can only dream of…and as time goes on, he shocks listeners with new production styles that will always be replay-worthy. His innovation in production and creating music is what makes him special, a highly revered DJ in the industry who can twist any old track into a club-worthy dance bop.

R3HAB’s accolades go far beyond his official remix stamps- he’s a dynamic live performer who plays some of the biggest festivals in the world to crowds of tens of thousands, he garnered 1 billion streams on Spotify in 2023
alone, and deservedly is #14 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ List.

But the thing about R3HAB is that this isn’t the end of his career by any means. He
continues to wow his audience with every new release, every live performance, and every remix. There’s no sign of stopping R3HAB.

After his release of “Animal,” I got the chance to speak with R3HAB about his iconic career and the creation of the track. Check it out below!

PD: Congratulations on “Animal” with Jason Derulo! This is your fourth collaboration together…how did you two start working together?

Jason and I have had a great run with remixes over the last six years, starting with “Goodbye” with David Guetta and Nicki Minaj. Our musical styles complement each other well, so we followed up with my remix of “Take You Dancing.” Since then, we’ve been trying to find the right record.

PD: “Animal” is the first new record you two have done together. How did you two end up making the record?

We tossed ideas back and forth for a long time until we landed on “Animal.” We instantly felt this song would be a perfect match for Jason’s pop style and my dance production.

PD: You’ve performed at some major festivals like Coachella and Tomorrowland. What are your favorite tracks to perform live?

I love to play unreleased music, there’s a special feeling about bringing a record fresh off the press after a long studio session and seeing the crowd react to it. Contrasting the new energy, I always enjoy including some R3HAB classics like “Karate”, “Flashlight” or “Tiger”.

PD: You’ve been massively successful in your remixes…with official mixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, and more. What’s your production process like when going into a remix?

Every song tells a different story and as a remixer my goal is to find a new way to tell it without ruining it (laughs). My production process relies on a selection of sounds from the original record and landing on the first idea, which is fundamental for the remix. I always make sure there’s a R3HAB electronic element attached to it.

PD: What’s one song you’d like to remix next or a collaboration you’d like to do?

I’ve been loving late 1990s / early 2000s records, and have a lot of fun incorporating them into current sonic ideas. Records like “All Around The World” and “Rock My Body” fit this concept. I love the way fans of the original song get to feel some nostalgia while making new memories.

PD: What’s next for you this year?

Festival season has just begun and I’m really hyped for the summer shows around the corner. I’ve been working on a lot of new music and can’t wait to share it in the coming months. Stay tuned!

  • Introducing Miami’s Hottest DJ: Amal Nemer

Introducing Miami’s Hottest DJ: Amal Nemer

Whether she’s remixing classic club hits like Mary J. Blidge’s “Family Affair” or creating fresh beats of her own, fans can’t help but dance to Amal Nemer’s music. Delving into her music career only three years ago, Amal Nemer quickly became highly sought after thanks to her natural ability to create house music that is entirely refreshing and her own.

Miami is no stranger to house music…Home of mega events like Miami Music Week and Ultra, where the best-of-the-best flock to perform on one of the biggest stages of their career. The city buzzes with electronic music weekend after weekend, so the crowds aren’t impressed by just any performer. Amal Nemer is different.

She can seamlessly make any type of house music- from Afro house to melodic house to techno – Amal leaves people wondering if she really can do it all. Previously a computer hacker in another life, Amal Nemer’s technological prowess helps her make flawless beats. Winning over the hearts of Miami may have looked easy for her, but she’s gaining recognition all over the world for her music.

With new single, “Yo Tengo Los Poderes”, Amal Nemer is gearing up for a new era of dominance. The single leans heavily into the drum and bass factor that’s popular amongst house icons like John Summit, but has Amal’s flare and personality that makes it an absolute hit. You can listen to “Yo Tengo Los Poderes” here:

Her latest single, “Get In” has every bit the energy and excitement as her classic work. It goes beyond the usual house song, and it’s hot from the very start. With a slew of singles and a new album potentially on the horizon, Amal Nemer is definitely one to watch moving forward.

I got the opportunity to speak with Amal about her new era. Check it out below!

PD: Your recent single, “Yo Tengo Los Poderes”, is the start of a new era for you. What inspired this new era and what can fans expect?

AN: The song is about no matter if I’m in love or not, I still have the power, and this was inspired by a past relationship I had. I think fans can expect me to continue to pull inspiration from moments in my life.

PD: Since moving to Miami in 2020, have you learned anything about the music industry or your style that surprised you?

AN: I learned everything about the industry from Miami and the people I’ve met and connected with, this city gave me everything I stand on today as I discovered this amazing world of beautiful music and people who love to dance.

PD: What’s your advice for someone looking to break into the dance community and create music like you do?

AN: To go out party first and take in all the different experiences of this scene, you need to become a true fan to be able to succeed, at the end of the day if you can’t enjoy this culture, then what’s the point?

PD: You didn’t always want to make music as a career. What got you into the scene and who has influenced your sound the most?

AN: It started with me just playing music that I liked for friends at our house parties off my phone, and then a friend told me I should try DJing. When I touched the mixer for the first time, I couldn’t think of doing anything else, I was in love and i’ve been obsessed ever since.

A bunch of artists across many genres initially inspired me from Chus+Ceballos, The Martinez Brothers, Solomun, Karol G, Dua Lipa, and the list goes on. I love to pull inspiration from a variety of genres.

    C/O Listen Up Biz

PD: If you could pick three words to describe your music, what would they be?

    AN: Authentic, Powerful, Addictive

PD: What’s inspiring you while writing and creating music right now?

AN: It comes to me randomly, i could be training, out at a party, with friends or family. Once an idea comes to me, I write a few notes on my phone then all I can think about is getting back home to work on it.

PD: What’s next for you this year?

AN: My true goal is to make sure everything I work on is slightly better than the last, so I continue to learn and push myself. I hope when people hear my music or see me play live, it brings smiles to their faces.

  • Coachella Is So Back: 5 Performances I Wish I Saw Weekend One

Coachella Is So Back: 5 Performances I Wish I Saw Weekend One

I hate to say it, but all good people admit when they’re wrong. After attending
Coachella in 2022, I saw a dying franchise desperately trying to retain its grasp on relevancy. With lackluster Californian crowds who only go for the festival name and not the names headlining, outsiders often wonder why artists treat this as a Mecca for music.

Long gone are the days when girls’ outfits were chosen with Tumblr shots in mind. The bohemian chic style that Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus, and other attendees made famous began as “Coachella style.”

And when I got a taste of the coveted festival, I was beyond underwhelmed. Sure, the rich and famous were within reach…but I couldn’t have felt further away from them. I ended up with dust in my lungs and a week’s worth of exhaustion.

    Celebs stopped attending
en masse, the non-festival influencer events like Revolve Festival rose in popularity, and it became abundantly clear that no one cared about the music…it was all about their Instagram posts.

But what I’ve learned from live-streaming Coachella 2024 — and pouring over my social media and consuming every single piece of Coachella content there is — is that Coachella is back in a major way.

Sure, the festival is designed to give you an intense bout of FOMO…but all I kept hearing was how bad everyone thought the lineup was. How no one of note would be in attendance this year. How Coachella was surely done for…until it wasn’t.

It’s been every bit as star-studded and shocking as earlier years. We’ve had earth-shattering performances, surprises left and right, and even reunions…not to mention the iconic
    American Royal Couple sighting.

We had 5-star performances from headliners like Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat. Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo via their supergroup, Anti Up, confirmed rumors of a joint album.

After spending the weekend across the country on the wrong coast sobbing to my friends that I opted not to go this year, I put together my must-see lineup.

Here are the five performances I would’ve attended at 2024 Coachella Weekend One.

    Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan’s sheer star power has truly been surprising me. With a devout fanbase (just watch her set), you’ll immediately realize that we’re dealing with someone who is about to break through to a different level of stardom.

During her set, you’ll hear essential songs like “Good Luck, Babe!”, “HOT TO GO!”, and “My Kink is Karma.” But what’s more impressive is her stage presence, the way she commands the crowd in avant-garde makeup, big hair, and a bigger personality.

Songs like “Good Hurt” saw a 160% increase on Spotify…Don’t sleep on Chappell Roan. Before you know it, she’ll be performing at a much bigger stage.

Everything Always – John Summit & Dom Dolla

Not enough is said about a house music set at a festival. Sure, the headliners are great and deliver us our fix of rock, pop, or soul. But it’s always been the DJ’s who have my heart at the end of the night. They know how to get you dancing, to feel the beat down to your soul, and forget for a while.

We saw a lot of technical difficulties and underwhelming sets from various artists this weekend…but John Summit and Dom Dolla delivered a borderline flawless collaboration that perfectly exhibited both their greatest hits and EDM essentials.

There’s nothing better than watching an artist truly having fun on stage…so when two friends, Dolla and Summit, come together to display some of the best techno house out there, they do not disappoint.

Soon to be the pregame track for many, Dom Dolla and John Summit are two of the biggest names in house for a reason.

    No Doubt

Two words: jaw dropped. Coachella’s Main Stage has reunited long lost bands and supergroups like Blink-182 and Swedish House Mafia…but few have No Doubt’s impact.

After a year of music domination on TikTok, Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, and Adrian Young took the stage to bring punk rock back in all its glory. In their first performance since 2015, this band has the exact same 1995 energy when they released “Just a Girl.”

Bringing out Gen Z’s very own punk pop princess, Olivia Rodrigo, was a passing of the torch in many ways. Stefani and Rodrigo belted “Bathwater” side by side as Rodrigo sported low rise cargos and an “I <3 ND” tank. “Bathwater” saw a 430% increase in streams on Spotify following the performance.

Perhaps the most impressive performance comes from Stefani, who at 54 years of age pranced and throttled around the stage full force. Stefani embodied a whirlwind tornado that gave more stage presence and energy than a 19-year-old. She went full punk rocker mode, and it was gorgeous.

    Sabrina Carpenter

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n-SDAxb_tQ

I keep reminding my readers that Sabrina Carpenter is the one to watch this year. She’s got all the ingredients of your classic popstar: proven vocal talent (even a stint on Broadway with Renee Rapp in Mean Girls), the opener for Taylor Swift’s legendary Era’s Tour, a past love triangle scandal with aforementioned Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, and the latest It Boy, Barry Keoghan, falling over his feet for her.

Her Coachella performance only solidified that I’m right. Carpenter understands her audience, and knows how to bring in more fans. She’s candidly witty, overtly sexual in her euphemisms, and yet exudes an innocence and honesty in her music.

For the first time on a Coachella stage, Carpenter was able to belt out her emails i can’t send album. This tell-all set of songs details her relationship with Bassett, her perspective on the backlash, and shares refreshing insights into her life.

She had the cinema, the vocal ability, the wow-factor. No notes.

    Lana Del Rey

And while many prominent publications and, most notably, the Recording Academy will continue to turn their noses towards the genius of Lana Del Rey, the world watched anyway. Del Rey’s music has inspired the careers of thousands of budding artists, and it’s rare that she gets such a massive platform to perform it.

Arriving via motorcade, Lana Del Rey took the stage to perform hits like “Summertime Sadness”, “Ride”, and “West Coast” while dancers twirled from poles and swirled around Del Rey.

With guests like Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, and the one-and-only Billie Eilish, Del Rey flawlessly integrated tracks like “Ocean Eyes” and her own “Video Games” into her set.

Many will criticize the microphone issues or the lack of energy from the crowd (all factors that were out of the headliner’s control)…but it’s overwhelmingly clear from Lana Del Rey’s performance that her star far outshines any technical difficulties.

  • Madonna and Improv Influence Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?”

Madonna and Improv Influence Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?”

For a minute there, Ariana Grande had a reputation for releasing new music as frequently as Rihanna once did (the singer-turned-makeup mogul could formerly be relied on for an album a year). That reached an apex in the time period between summer of 2018 and winter of 2019, when Grande famously released the one-two punch of Sweetener and thank u, next in the span of six months. Part of that rapidity stemmed from being creatively inspired by the storm of personal events that transpired in the months after Sweetener’s release, including the death of her ex, Mac Miller, and her breakup with then fiancé Pete Davidson (who Grande put on the map, dating-wise). Grande’s prolificness didn’t let up in 2020 either, when she gave the world a prime example of “pandemic pop” in the form of the Positions album.

Soon after the release of that record, Grande announced her engagement (again) to “celebrity (a.k.a. luxury) realtor” Dalton Gomez. This was also after the news that she had been cast as Glinda in the film version of Wicked (because turning musicals based on movies into musical movies is all the rage now). A project that also consumed her enough for her to announce that she would not release new music until production was over. Now, going on four years since Positions was released, Grande is ready to reintroduce herself. And, of course, throw some shade at one of the latest scandals to have affected her “brand” in the headlines: that she’s a homewrecker willing to wreck a home for someone who looks like Ethan Slater, her co-star in Wicked (who, appropriately, plays a munchkin with a crush on her). As for Slater’s high school sweetheart, Lilly Jay, the two divorced soon after the announcement of Grande’s relationship, with Jay commenting, “[Ariana’s] the story really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.” And yet, even to Jay, Grande would likely quip, “Yes, and?” That two-word phrase being most known for its association with improv philosophy until now.

What’s more, the “and what?” (just a synonym for “yes, and?”) vibe of it is also associated with another pop star. The mother of all pop stars, as it were: Madonna (someone Ari is no stranger to collaborating with). Because, indeed, it isn’t just the sound of the song that emulates Madonna’s house-inspired “Vogue” stylings (something Beyoncé also wanted to resuscitate recently with “Break My Soul” [cue another “Queens Remix” instead featuring Ariana and Madonna] and Renaissance as a whole). It’s also the “I don’t give a fuck what you think” aura that Madonna has exuded, specifically, since 1985, after nude photos of her from her pre-fame days were sold to Playboy and Penthouse. Rather than cowering in shame or “apologizing,” as was usually the case in those days, Madonna was the first woman to stand up for herself in such a scenario and say simply, “So what?” Deciding that what she did for money before she was famous was her own business, and she oughtn’t be judged for it, even if the photos were splashed across these glossy men’s magazines for all to see. This unprecedented reaction on the part of a slut-shamed famous woman prompted the iconic New York Post headlines: “Madonna on Nudie Pix: So What!” and “Madonna: ‘I’m Not Ashamed,’ followed by the subtitle, “Rock star shrugs off nudie pix furor.” (Both front pages that would be “arti-ified” by Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.) With those simple two words, Madonna paved the way for Grande’s own: “yes, and?”

Of course, the danger of that is how people will now start using it to justify objectively egregious acts, like, say, murder (just imagine how bad “yes, and?” would be received if Israel suddenly started adopting it as its mantra while bombing Palestine, or if Russia did the same in its actions toward Ukraine). And yes (not to be confused with yes, and), we do live in a society where certain kinds of murder are glorified, even applauded (see: Gypsy-Rose Blanchard). Certain kinds of grotesque behavior in general, mostly related to the debasing things people will do for money. One might even say, in her allyship, Grande is ultimately hollerin’ for a dollar when she says, “Boy, come on, put your lipstick on (no one can tell you nothin’).” Because obviously it benefits her makeup brand’s sales to encourage all genders to wear it. Being an “ally” in the process is just an added bonus.

In addition to alluding to her “homewrecking” ways (though nothing will ever compare to the homewrecker’s anthem that is Marina and the Diamonds’ “Homewrecker”), Grande also references her body being commented upon back in April of 2023. When she chose to respond to the wave of comments about how “thin” and “unhealthy” she looked with a video. One in which she stated, “I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what [Billie Eilish had a similar, blunter statement to make on “Not My Responsibility”]… You never know what someone is going through. So even if you are coming from a loving place and a caring place, that person is probably working on it.” This comes back again in “yes, and?” when she sings, “Don’t comment on my body, do not reply.” Not to mention the Britney-centric declaration, “Your business is yours and mine is mine” (it all has the decidedly tongue-in-cheek tone of Spears’ “Piece of Me” video).

Grande’s positivity doesn’t extend just to the body, but also to finding light in dark situations (a running motif in her work since Sweetener, when she repeated, “The light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole” on “The Light Is Coming”). Thus, she urges, “Yes, and?/Say that shit with your chest.” In other words, stick out your chest with pride (another subtle gay allyship allusion), hold your head high, etc. Grande then adds, perhaps anticipating the fallout for daring to live one’s “most authentic life,” “Be your own fuckin’ best friend.” It’s a sentiment that echoes the sologamist verse on “thank u, next” (indeed, Ari appears to want “yes, and?” to make even more direct reference to that track when she sings, “Keep moving like, ‘What’s next?’). The one that goes, “I ain’t worried ’bout nothin’/Plus, I met someone else/We’re havin’ better discussions/I know they say I move on too fast/But this one gon’ last/‘Cause her name is Ari/And I’m so good with that.” As she also seems to be on “yes, and?”—even if currently “riding the dick” that is Ethan Slater’s. A tabloid tidbit she addresses with, “Why do you care so much whose dick I ride?/Why?” Probably because celebrity worship/envy and the according “need” to know everything about their personal lives has been an ongoing part of our culture at least since the dawn of film.

In truth, celebrities would probably be a bit disappointed if no one cared whose dick they were riding, but that’s another story/psychological analysis. Besides, no one wants to “overthink” too much with a song like this playing, its infectious house rhythms (ready-made for striking poses on the ballroom dance floor courtesy of production from Grande, Max Martin and ILYA) likely to infiltrate LGBTQIA+ spaces the world over in no time.

To be sure, the release of new Ari music always feels best at the beginning of a year, as thank u, next did. Punctuating it with so much initial hope before people start to notice a few months in that shit is not only still the same, it’s probably getting worse. To which government officials might riposte, “Yes, and?”

  • Four Artists To Watch For In 2024

Four Artists To Watch For In 2024

Whether you are ready or not, we are officially in 2024. It’s okay if you’ve already abandoned your overambitious resolutions for more plausible goals — or if you’ve just given up entirely. There’s always next year.

But if there’s one constant, it’s listening to music. If Spotify Wrapped taught me anything, it’s that I really can make it through anything with the right soundtrack. We’re edging closer to awards season, which means everyone is looking for the best of the best. Our inner critic comes out and, suddenly, we’re all members of the Recording Academy.

With the 2024 Grammy’s right around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hits from yesteryear. But I’m already looking ahead to the new year of music. And it’s time to recognize artists who are about to have a huge year. Some of them may be familiar names and hopefully, others will become new favorites of yours.

Regardless, there have been four artists who stuck out to me this past year. These artists aren’t new per se, but they’ve skyrocketed with recent success leading the charts, making an impact on pop culture, and featuring prominently on Spotify playlists. Each artist has been selected because they have the It Factor — and finally everyone is seeing it.

Here are the four artists to watch in 2024!

    Sabrina Carpenter

    Sabrina Carpenter via GRAMMY.com

    Sabrina Carpenter press

Carpenter fell headfirst into a love triangle scandal alongside pop queen Olivia Rodrigo and her castmate, Joshua Bassett. In 2022, she released her fifth studio album, emails i can’t send, which solidified her as a certified pop songwriter who has every “It” factor you look for in a young starlet.

Her sound can span genres- with synthy, sexy pop/R&B blends like “bet u wanna” to stomp-and-holler-inspired “Already Over.” Her take on heartache and the increased public scrutiny is both refreshing and witty.

After opening for Taylor Swift this year and going viral for her “Nonsense” outros, and most recently performing for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, it’s hard to imagine that this is the last we’ll see of Sabrina.

    Noah Kahan

    Noah Kahan

    Noah Kahan

    Asyia Marotta

A favorite here at Popdust, Noah Kahan has perfected that aforementioned “stomp and holler” sound. After a year of country-folk renaissance, Kahan’s Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) deluxe edition released in 2023 and continuously broke records…leading to collaborations with artists like Post Malone, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, and Lizzy McAlpine.

With a sold out stadium tour on the horizon, Kahan is skyrocketing. His storytelling through music is unmatched- painting pictures of woeful hometown memories, heartache, loss, anxiety, and more.

His self-deprecating humor and appreciation for success make Noah Kahan who he is. A longtime advocate for mental health, Kahan started The Busyhead Project to raise money for the cause. He has us in the palm of his hand, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

    Dom Dolla

    Dom Dolla

    Dom Dolla

    donslens

In the world of Electronic Dance Music, Dom Dolla is a trailblazer. He’s spent the year performing to crowds of tens of thousands of people at festivals and headline shows, and releasing some of the biggest EDM mixes of the year with “Eat Your Man (feat. Nelly Furtado)” and the disco jam “Saving Up.”

He’s one of the most exciting producers for a reason: a chart topper who knows how to reach the ears (and hearts) of fans of house and EDM, and new listeners alike. He’s found new ways to incorporate sound bytes, big drops, bass, and classic tech-house style and create a league of his own.

Whether he’s remixing classic tracks like “Black Betty”, playing his own tunes, or performing B2B sets with a fellow hot topic, John Summit, the “Rhyme Dust” creator is one-of-a-kind. Nominated for his first GRAMMY for his remix of Gorillaz “New Gold” with Tame Impala and Bootie Brown, Dom Dolla is your EDM artist to watch.

    Renee Rapp

    Renee Rapp

    Renee Rapp

    Erica Hernandez

You may know her as Leighton from Max’s Sex Lives Of College Girls…or as Regina George in the 2024 remake of Mean Girls. But Renee Rapp is a whirlwind of a pop-R&B artist who knows how to make flawless music. She’s gathered a passionate fanbase behind her to prove it, and after her most recent album, Snow Angel, we’re dying to know what’s next.

2022 was huge for Rapp, with her Snow Hard Feelings tour accompanying the album. She’s the talk of the town, weaving tales of unrequited love, belting ballads of heartache, and balancing them out with punchy pop tunes that are worthy of a repeat.

She’s the face of both cinema and music right now, with a versatility of creativity that so few can achieve. It would be a mistake not to include her on our artists to watch this year, because we know Renee Rapp is only getting started.

  • FEATURE ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Yolanda Be Cool

FEATURE ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Yolanda Be Cool

In 2010, Matthew Handley and Andrew Stanley came together over their love for multi-cultural music and sounds, combined it with their disc jockey prowess, and delivered us perhaps one of the most iconic debut tracks of all time: “We No Speak Americano.” It was an instantaneous smash hit, selling over 5 million copies and topping the charts worldwide.

“We No Speak Americano” with DCUP under their label, Sweat It Out, was unlike anything we’d heard in the disco-funk dance world. It sampled the 1956 Italian classic, “Tu Vuò Fà L’Americano” by Renato Carosone and, like all good tracks, made it into its own unique experience. It was the song that won them a 2010 ARIA for “Best Dance Release”, and certified them as exciting beat-makers and collaborators who had loads to offer.

A once-in-a-lifetime duo, Yolanda Be Cool went on to release albums like
Ladies + Mentalmen and Je Suis Music, which re-introduced listeners to electro swing mixed with house that made you genuinely want to dance. The pairing stole the hearts (and ears) of fans and new listeners alike by combining all of your favorite parts of EDM- tribal tech, minimalism, house, disco- and blending them seamlessly together.

They’re industry risk takers, who were so inspired by Chris Lake’s style that they tapped into their craft to create the hit “Segunda” for him. You may see them touring performing B2B sets alongside fellow Australian native FISHER, where attendees rave about the high energy setting and consistent flow of jam-worthy beats. Never slowing down, Yolanda Be Cool continued to take it a step further with their new record label, SWEATRZ.

After releasing their single “Hip Trumpets” under SWEATRZ, Yolanda Be Cool is gearing up for another massive year. The song is everything you love about Yolanda Be Cool and more. It’s a sign of their growth and confidence as producers and DJ’s, an indication that this pair is not going anywhere. Listen to “Hip Trumpets” here:

We spoke to them on their live sets, the new label, and much more below! Check it out.

PD: You both came together over your love of Brazilian music. Can you talk a bit about that story?

We’ve always just loved quirky music and baile funk is a perfect example of this. Matt lived in Brazil for a year and came back broke and Andy had lots of good DJ gigs and hooked Matt up and then we just started playing together….so you could say Matt’s broke-ness from a year in Brazil brought us together 🙂

PD: How did that love inspire your big track, “We No Speak Americano?”

Well…..Americano is obviously in Italian, which is a Latin language, as is Portuguese so there’s that but i think more to the point… we saw the opportunity to take such an iconic original sample from the 1950’s in Italy and flip it in a way that would make sense for modern dancefloors. When we sent it to our Italian DJ friends, they thought it was funny and told us how their grandma used to play the song to them in the kitchen when they were kids.

PD: You’re under a new label, Sweatrz Records, and you’ve released your new track “Hip Trumpets” with KVISION! Has being under a new label changed anything about your production process or the music you’re making?

Well….we started SWEATRZ with our buddy Paluma to have an outlet for the more raw underground side of house music. We still have Sweat It Out and Club Sweat and have music coming on both and we also love working with other labels like Black Book and Club Bad. We basically just jump in the studio and make whatever’s inspiring us….and then we think of the label to send it to after based on what labels we think would dig it.

PD: You created “Segunda” for Chris Lake. What was the collaboration process like between you all?

Well..we played with Chris in Seattle last year at the Black Book party and we loved how eclectic his set was and set the goal of making a song that was true to our sound, but would go off in his sets. When we finished Segunda we sent it straight to him and he loved it. We worked on the breakdown a bit more off the back of his feedback and then he gave it the greenlight and we were stoked.

PD: More recently, you’ve been performing B2B’s with FISHER. What can fans expect from those sets?

Well, we’ve always jumped around with our DJ sets because we love so much music but artists and producers and labels we’re loving right now go from the more minimal tech stuff like Rendher and Kidoo to more house-y 90s kinds stuff like Jansons and Sally C to the more tribally tech stuff from people like Andruss, Harvy Valencia and Marco Lys with labels like Solid Grooves, PIV, Black Book and Hot Creations always providing the goods of course along with SWEATRZ, Club Sweat and Sweat It Out.

PD: What are your favorite songs to perform live?
Well, we love playing and testing out the stuff we’ve been working on in the studio. We have a collab with Paluma right now that’s coming out on SWEATRZ soon and it goes off so we’ve been loving playing that. It’s called “Get Into It” and rocks. Also loving Mele’s new single Jozi to the D.

PD: What’s next for you this year?

We have a bunch of shows in Aus and the US and stopping by Amsterdam for ADE which is always exciting. Then we have heaps of new music coming on the labels including the single we mentioned with Paluma which we’re really pumped on.

    SEE THEM LIVE:

Sat, Dec 2 – Confessions Nightclub – MacKay

Sat, Dec 9 – Pointers – Auckland, NZ

Sat, Dec 23 – Nice Club (BOYANA) – Canggu, Bali

Tues, Dec 26 – Northies – Cronulla, NSW

  • Jauz Is Back For More With New Album, Wrath of the Wicked

Jauz Is Back For More With New Album, Wrath of the Wicked

At 26, Sam Vogel has solidified his name as a prominent producer and DJ…creating tracks under the stage name, Jauz, Vogel has a reputation for his pulse-racing, energetic live performances that mesh big sounds, vibrant visuals, and Jauz’ signature hits. At just 17, while many of us were in high school, Jauz was watching his music career blossom into the genre-bending, bass-loving DJ he is today.

His 2018 album, The Wise & The Wicked, which topped the iTunes Dance charts within 90 minutes of its release. Fans were keen to loving his emphasis on the bass, drums, and synths on chart-dominating singles like “Feel The Volume” and “Rock The Party.” It felt like the then 21-year-old Jauz couldn’t possibly perfect his already perfect sound…until now.

He’s constantly crafting music that shows his growth and exudes confidence in his abilities to stay true to his sound while revealing new, previously unknown paths in house music. This past summer’s EP, Rise of the Wise, gradually easing listeners into a swell of house music curated towards Jauz’ subtle sonic changes. Yet, this isn’t the last we’re hearing from him this year.

He’s played at some of the biggest festivals in the world like Ultra, Tomorrowland Belgium, and more. He’s done his own headline tours with quick sellouts and large crowds. But just a few months after the release of his previous album, Jauz is here with the second part: Wrath of the Wicked.

The yin to Rise’s yang, Wrath of the Wicked is more of a fraternal twin. Polar opposite in style and genre, you can hear the clear difference in Jauz’ music throughout both albums. It’s an impressive showcase of his range- able to create any sort of electronic dance music and have it make sense.

Wrath of the Wicked is a solid continuation of its predecessor, Rise of the Wise…and this time around Jauz is a bit more confident, has an even cleaner sound, and delves into true dubstep, edgier music. Emphasizing his two favorite production instruments, the bass and the drums, singles like “Dreaming” and “Choppa” are essential Jauz tracks. You can listen to the new album here:

Alongside this album is the Wise/Wicked tour, where fans will have the ultimate choice: attend either the Wise or the Wicked show (or both!) for two completely different concert experiences.

While Rise was more of an album to showcase all Jauz has learned and grown to become…Wrath was exclusively for the fans. We spoke to Jauz about how these two albums came together and the new tour below!

PD: Congrats on Wrath of the Wicked! Was a second installment of Wise & The Wicked always the plan?

Yeah for sure, eventually that was definitely always my goal. Once the 5 year anniversary of TWATW started to come around, I realized that it was probably the right time to revisit the idea of making the follow up..

PD: Did you have these songs for Wise & The Wicked or are some newly produced?

Other than the “Super Fly” VIP, which technically is essentially a remix of a song from the first album, they’re all brand new. The oldest song in here I started maybe a few years ago. But I definitely feel like you can tell in the album the progress I’ve made as an artist and producer. I hope at least!

PD: How do the two albums fit together? Is it a continuation of the first or more of its own body of work?

I knew this time around that I wanted to give more attention to each “World” from the original story, which is why I thought it made more sense to put out two separate “follow up” albums this year, “Rise of the Wise” which came out in July, and now WOTW. They’re both completely different from one another and really dive deep into the “worlds” I originally envisioned when writing the first album.

PD: Five years later, has your production style changed at all and are you drawing inspiration from new places?

My style has definitely grown and evolved, but I also feel like it still sounds like the same “me” that I was when I wrote the first album in a lot of ways. That’s always my goal at least, is to always keep learning and growing and changing but also still making sure that the songs I write still feel like me at the end of the day.

PD: You have a super interesting tour concept with 2023 Wise/Wicked…where fans can choose to go to the “Wise” or “Wicked” shows for different experiences. Can you tell us about those shows and what to expect at each?

If you listen to each album, I think it’ll give a pretty clear concept of what each show will be like. The “Wise” shows will be focused on the techier, housier music I’ve been exploring a lot over the last few years, where the “Wicked” shows will be dedicated to the full octane, super heavy bass music that a lot of fans are excited to hear. My goal is that fans will want to go to both shows, since they’re going to be completely different experiences from one another!

PD: What tracks are you most excited to play live?

That’s a tough question. I just put out like 15 songs between these two albums, so I don’t know if I could pick just one from all of those! I will say though, “Lights Go Out” from the album I put out in July is still one of my all time favorites I’ve ever made.

  • The Unstoppable Chris Lake

    The Unstoppable Chris Lake

In terms of electronic dance music, Chris Lake is a bit of a juggernaut. He has no problem finding ways to innovate house music, constantly churning out hit track after hit track, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry, and giving us the soundtracks to many nights out on the dance floor.

His success is a result of his mastermind in the production studio, curating beats and sounds and blending them with strong vocals to give us hits like “Turn Off The Lights”, “Delirious” with Steve Aoki and Kid Ink, and even remixing Portugal The Man’s “Dummy.” He’s a prolific career includes a GRAMMY nomination, several #1 hits, and a repeat name on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down soon.

He’s had a busy year- touring across the globe and performing at some of the biggest festivals and selling out two nights at the Brooklyn Mirage, doing B2B sets with fellow house-dominator FISHER, even debuting their Under Construction brand…where they design their own stages and perform memorable sets.

Chris Lake has the ability to turn any song into a chart-topper…but his recent collaborations with Aluna have made even casual listeners a fan. Starting with “Beggin’”, which quickly amassed over 30 million streams globally, felt like the meeting of two titans in house music. Adding Aluna’s sultry vocals to “Beggin’” and mixing it with a heavy drumbeat, you won’t want to stop dancing until the song is over.

Now, they’re back to give us more with “More Baby!” A track perfect for your nights out, your workouts, and anything in between- the high tempo and Aluna’s mesmerizing voice makes you ready for whatever life throws at you. A duo for the ages, Chris Lake and Aluna prove they can make a hit…and another hit….and another. You can listen to the track here:

Chris Lake continues to set the bar higher and higher, and Popdust got the chance to talk to him about the tracks with Aluna, his Under Construction Brand, and more. Check it out below!

PD: Congratulations on “More Baby!” As your second single with Aluna following “Beggin”, do you guys now have a production process?

CL: Not one that we recognize no. We do have plans to get in the studio more though. We’ve only had a limited amount of sessions in the studio unfortunately. But, we’ve made two bangers so something is working.

PD: What inspired you both to work together again? Is this the last Chris Lake and Aluna track we’re getting?

CL: We did both of the tracks around the same time earlier this year. It was just difficult for us to release both of these around her album which had already been scheduled a long time previously.

PD: You’ve been working on your Under Construction Brand with FISHER. How did that start and what was it like creating it?

CL: At the root of this we’re just mates that love music and the few times we have played music together people have loved it. We’ve just essentially reacted at each stage to the last party and said –let’s do this next time– and at one of those points we decided to start the Under Construction Brand. Honestly all we care about is having a laugh and having a party that we have all our friends and family at. It’s not all just about what the crowd sees but there is also a whole party going on behind the decks too which is just as memorable for us.

PD: You both have been performing B2B sets as well, with an Under Construction event coming up in LA. How do you blend your sounds together during these shows?

CL: That is a good question. I don’t know. I guess we just have a synergy musically. I trust him and he trusts me. Most of the time we don’t have any plan we just follow each others lead and see where it takes us.

PD: You’re also the founder of Black Book Records. What was it like starting your own label and what do you look for in artists you sign?

CL: I am. I love that label. At the root of it it was an outlet for me to release my own music but more importantly, now it’s an avenue to develop and release music from new and exciting talent and it’s something that all of us at the label take very seriously. It’s our passion to release music that excites us and help expose and grow artists that we sign to a wider audience both through the success of the music itself and through the events they are abel to play off the back of those releases.

PD: You’ve got a few live performances to end the year. What are your favorite tracks to perform live?

CL: There’s loads. I still get the greatest kick from playing “Turn Off the Lights” because its still probably my biggest record and I’m proud of how it turned out and the reaction I get at my shows. It makes people happy which makes me happy too.

  • How INNA Created Her Album, Just Dance, In 16 Days

How INNA Created Her Album, Just Dance, In 16 Days

INNA knows how to create a masterpiece – and quickly. In just 16 days, INNA and her team isolated themselves from the rest of society and made an entire body of work. They toyed with sounds and mixed electronic and deep house vocals to create Dance Queen’s House: an anthology of albums called Just Dance that compile 16 days-worth of well-rounded EDM tracks.

To make an album is impressive, but to complete a collection of music in a little over two weeks is almost unheard of. It speaks to INNA’s dedication to her music and how easily creating quality house music comes to her. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, with a natural talent that shows through in her music.

With previous success in her single “Hot,” and collaborations with Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Flo Rida, and Sean Paul, INNA’s new album has been highly anticipated. Just Dance is every bit as exciting as promised. The future is bright for INNA, who never fails to create a stellar track.

INNA spoke exclusively with Popdust about creating Just Dance, her time on The Voice, and her future plans:

Your new album Just Dance is the third album from your Dance Queen’s House Project, which you created in 16 days – what was the writing and recording process like for you?

It’s already a tradition to end the year with a Dance Queen’s House session: 16 days, a lot of music, friends, colleagues, producers and songwriters from Global Records. I’m sharing my passion for music with a lot of surprises and 8 episodes on my YouTube channel with the entire experience. And of course, a new album with the songs produced and written in DQH. I’m happy I’m able to do what I love and that I get to release an album every year. At the beginning of this year, I released the first part of my album “Just Dance” and on the 14th of April, the second part of the album will be out!

You’ve notoriously collaborated with J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Flo Rida, Pitbull and more. Is there anyone you want to work with in the future?

I’m super grateful for everything I achieved in my career, and of course, for the collaborations. There are lots of other artists I admire and I hope I will get to work with. Actually, this year I will have some collaborations I am excited for. Stay tuned!

What has been your favorite memory while with Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation?

The entire experience was amazing: first of all, I appreciated that the album got signed with ROC Nation and I felt special and appreciated. I got to meet the team, a lot of artists during the ROC Nation brunch, and had an intense media tour. It was truly amazing!

Your YouTube channel has over 7 million subscribers, where you not only post your music videos, but vlogs that help your fans connect with you! The most recent vlogs were about making part two of your Just Dance album. What’s the most fun part of making the vlogs? Will there be more in the future?

Usually, I’m doing the vlogs during Dance Queen’s House. But I also have “on the road” videos from my tour around the world, and behind the scenes from shootings and official videos. Subscribe and have fun!

What was your favorite part about making your Just Dance album and how was creating part two different from part one?

Both parts of the album were created during Dance Queen’s House, so the process was the same: intense and fun, with a lot of inspiration and fresh vibes from Alex Cotoi, IRAIDA and Marco & Seba, the creative team behind the album.

What are your favorite tracks off Just Dance?

From the first part of the album “Just Dance”, my favorite song is “We Should Get Lost.” From the second one, stay tuned!

Do you have any plans on touring in the future?

Right now, I’m in Mexico. I’ve just finished performing at a festival in Veracruz. Unbelievable experience! And this spring and summer are full of shows in Turkey, Finland, Romania, Latvia, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, UK, Morocco, and many more to be added to the list. Hope to see you at my shows!

You know that one person you can call at any time, for any reason, and they’ll always be there for you? That’s the underlying message within “I’ll Be Around,” Elderbrook and Amtrac‘s stunning new collab.

Individually, the two are no strangers to infusing soft and sensual elements into their music. And together, they’ve produced what we can only describe as a transformative sound.

“I’ll Be Around” kicks off by introducing its ethereal and melancholic chord progression. Before long, Elderbrook’s distinct, feathery vocals swoop in like a warm hug right when you need it the most. “I’ll be there when you need me, like a light in the evening, by your side when you’re sleeping,” he croons.

Esteemed house music duo Walker & Royce have released Just What the World Needs, a stunning EP.

Out now via their own Rules Don’t Apply imprint, the two-tracker features Mindchatter and VNSSA. Just What the World Needs flaunts Walker & Royce’s dynamic production chops and ability to create masterful and emotive soundscapes.

“Same Way Down” is a dreamy and introspective song with Mindchatter’s distinct vocals, which float atop soaring chords and a slow-burning beat. On the flip side of the coin is “Outer Space,” where VNSSA stuns in a quirky house banger with spacey synths and pumping basslines.

  • Hayden James Gives ODESZA’s “The Last Goodbye” a Stunning House Makeover – EDM.com

Hayden James Gives ODESZA’s “The Last Goodbye” a Stunning House Makeover – EDM.com

This week ODESZA surprised fans by dropping an official remix of “The Last Goodbye,” the titular track from the duo’s Grammy-nominated album of the same, produced by none other than Australian house music virtuoso Hayden James.

James’ upbeat rework of the soulful track is a funky re-imagination that sublimely reflects the intention and theme of ODESZA’s original. While “The Last Goodbye” is a powerful electronic record sampling Bettye LaVette’s 1965 song “Let Me Down Easy,” James transforms it into a decidedly house track—and a dancefloor filler.

  • I Want More! My Night Raving With Moore Kismet

I Want More! My Night Raving With Moore Kismet

Before this past Saturday, I never labeled myself a die-hard EDM fan – Not sure I’d call myself one even now. Still, without a doubt, I’m grateful I was introduced to Moore Kismet and the other awesome DJs featured during the show at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Let’s just say Moore knows how to curate a good time, and I’ll be checking for their next NYC show.

Hold Up – WHIPPED CREAM, Big Freedia, Moore Kismet, UNIIQU3 (Official Audio)

Did I mention that this insanely talented DJ is a mere 18-brilliant-years-old?

My crappy playlist from my freshmen year of college can’t compare to their amazing setlist. And if this is where they are now, imagine where they’ll take their music in the coming years.

After just one show, it’s clear Moore Kismet has confidently crafted their sound. Their mastery over brass and bass-synth is out of this world. So much so that I went home that night and dove head-first into all things Moore Kismet.

    PARALLEL HEARTBREAK (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)

Their debut album, Universe, was released when they were only 17. This album is packed with genre-blending tracks and wild fusions of soundscapes that will liberate you on the dancefloor or while you’re jogging on treadmill at your gym.

Their music takes you to another place where you’re free to ditch your inhibitions, be your true self, and merge with the bass-filled melodies for a night of audio pleasure.

“I can’t believe we’re out past midnight,” – My twenty-eight-year-old roommate screamed in my ear

I may have been older than most concert-goers, but I danced ‘til my feet hurt. And I was sweatier than I like, but the feeling of being out of my apartment and moving to a bass-heavy beat was worth it.

Needless to say, I can’t wait for more from Moore Kismet!
