  • Body ‘dumped’ near New Found Gap in Smoky Mountains, NC cops say. Three charged

Three people have been linked to a body found “dumped” along a scenic road through the Great Smoky Mountains, according to police in western North Carolina.

Investigators suspect the man was killed late Dec. 19 or early Dec. 20, in nearby Cherokee, which is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The Cherokee Indian Police Department says it was alerted by a vague tip “about a person being shot at an unknown location, by an unknown person.”

“Through the investigation it was determined that Thomas Pheasant Jr. was shot and had sustained multiple gunshot wounds at a residence,” Cherokee police reported in a Dec. 24 news release.

“The victim’s body was taken from the residence and dumped near New Found Gap. The body was located and recovered.”

Timothy Jason McCoy was named a suspect in the killing and arrested, police said. McCoy is charged with homicide in first degree, assault with deadly weapon and assault by pointing a gun, police said.

A motive was not released and investigators have not revealed how McCoy was linked to the shooting.

Two other people are accused of being accessories: Derrick Jenkins and Victoria Thompson are charged with accessory after the fact and obstruction of governmental functions, police said.

Investigators did not provide specifics of where the body was found, but New Found Gap is a low point in the Smoky Mountains and the overlook is a popular tourist destination in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The gap is accessed by a Newfound Gap Road, which connects Cherokee to Gatlinburg on the Tennessee side of the park.

The shooting happened at a home on Galamore Road, a rural dead-end just south of the park’s North Carolina boundary, maps show.

Cherokee is about a 180-mile drive northwest from uptown Charlotte.

West Palm fatal shooting: Man, 22, faces murder charge after July shooting outside Northwood nightclub

Police: Cellphone records placed suspected gunman at shooting scene

Investigators say the fatal shooting occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on April 2, 2022, during an apparent drug deal in the parking lot of the Parkside Residences apartment complex on the 5500 block of North Haverhill Road, near 45th Street.

A witness who identified himself as a friend of Cambridge told investigators he and Cambridge had arranged to meet with a group of men that night to sell them codeine cough syrup. Codeine is an opioid medication that is used to treat mild to moderate pain and is considered addictive.

The witness said two men exited a Chevy Malibu shortly after arriving at the apartment complex and approached a Corvette driven by Cambridge. Another man remained in the Malibu’s driver seat. A conversation over the transaction took place at the rear driver’s side of the Corvette, the witness told investigators.

The witness said the two prospective buyers then brandished firearms, prompting him to flee on foot. He described hearing gunshots and returning to find Cambridge lying on the ground.

Cambridge, 26, died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his lower back and left shoulder, police said.

During the subsequent investigation, the witness provided police with Instagram accounts for two potential suspects. Police used the social media accounts to identify Johnson and the Malibu’s driver. The witness later identified Johnson as one of the two men who brandished a firearm, police said.

Cellphone records placed Johnson near the scene at the time of the shooting, according to the arrest report.

  • An infant dead on the 405; a man slain; a fatal crash: Police connect 3 separate crime scenes

An infant dead on the 405; a man slain; a fatal crash: Police connect 3 separate crime scenes

The death of an infant on the 405 Freeway near Culver City may be connected to a Topanga-area slaying and a deadly crash in Redondo Beach, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Monday.

Officers were dispatched to the 6200 block of Variel Avenue in Woodland Hills around 7:35 a.m. Monday, where they found an unresponsive man in his 30s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives later learned of two incidents that had occurred earlier in the morning and might have ties to their homicide investigation, LAPD said.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers were called to the northbound 405 Freeway near the Sepulveda Boulevard/Howard Hughes Parkway exit, according to the California Highway Patrol. An infant girl about 5 or 6 months old was found in the roadway, and a 9-year-old girl was found on the right shoulder.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene, and the girl was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries. A 911 caller reported seeing a black sedan near where the girls were found, according to City News Service.

“At this time, Valley Bureau Homicide detectives are working with the California Highway Patrol on the incident involving the two children and believe it is connected to the Topanga homicide scene,” LAPD said on X.

In a further twist, the LAPD and CHP are collaborating with the Redondo Beach Police Department to determine whether the two violent scenes are connected to a fatal car crash in the beach city that involved a black sedan, L.A. police said.

The collision occurred around 5 a.m. Monday when a female driver crashed into a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

CBS News reported that detectives identified a suspect in their investigation as the mother of the children found on the freeway and the wife of the man found in Topanga.

The LAPD did not confirm this information when reached by phone.
