    If you’re seeking a portable sauna, you could go with either brand.

    Both brands make a far infrared sauna that is designed to be packed up and stowed away when not in use. They both use a mat-and-dome design with their own sets of pros and cons. For example, Clearlight’s (called The Curve) includes an amethyst infrared PEMF mat that you can use with or without the dome. Sunlighten’s (called the Solo System) is a little less design-friendly, but it includes chromotherapy lighting.

    Just note that our pricing guidance flips here: Clearlight’s portable far infrared sauna is less expensive (quoted at $2,899) than Sunlighten’s (quoted at $3,199).

    If EMFs are a concern, you could go with either brand.

    Both Clearlight and Sunlighten’s saunas use third party testing to ensure the EMF (electromagnetic field) levels of their heaters are less than 1 mG. And both brands test for ELF (extremely low frequency) radiation, which many other sauna brands don’t mention.

    If outdoor use is your goal, go with Clearlight.

    None of Sunlighten’s sauna options are intended for outdoor use, and doing so will likely compromise your warranty.

    Clearlight, on the other hand, offers outdoor-specific models of their Sanctuary Series. They use mahogany on the inside and a more durable engineered wood on the outside for weather protection. Clearlight’s regular cabinet saunas are also cleared for outdoor use as long as you use them with their waterproof cover and live in an environment that doesn’t drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

    A classic makeup artist trick is to highlight the cupid’s bow. The cupid’s bow refers to the dip in your upper lip, so that your top lip resembles a bow. Highlighting the area cheats the appearance of light and adds dimension. Think about it: Areas of the face that catch the light are the areas that are more prominent, such as the nose and cheeks.     When you hear “highlight” most folks think of well, highlighter. And while you can totally use this handy makeup product to pull off the trick, highlighters are usually shiny or sparkly. For those of us who stick to a minimalist makeup look, just a light shade of concealer does the same thing. 

    According to celebrity makeup artist Mary Irwin, any lighter color will add that faux volume. For example: “You can use concealer in a slightly lighter color to define,” she says.

    All I do is blend a very small amount of concealer on my cupid’s bow and along the top lip line. I personal love both rms Beauty UnCoverup Natural Finish Concealer and Rituel de Fille The Ethereal Veil. They’re creamy, easy to blend in, and come in a variety of shades.

    After, I’ll fill in the lips with a nude-pink lip color (or whatever natural hue work for you) and a swipe of lip balm. I always opt for lip balms with fatty acids, lipids, and humectants.     “There are far more studies on regular saunas, but so far, studies on infrared saunas imply that the benefits may be similar,” says Tanmeet Sethi, M.D, a board-certified Integrative Family Medicine physician and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “[And] the benefits of a regular sauna are vast and quite impressive.” 

    Sethi explains that most research on saunas comes from Finland, where sauna usage is a part of their culture. “Benefits are mostly through the mode of improvement in cardiovascular health through reduction in blood pressure, improvement in endothelial function, reduction in inflammation, and improved arterial compliance,” she says. 

    Per Sethi, these benefits are linked to better sleep, cardiorespiratory function, improved immune system health, lower risk of neurocognitive disease, and “even improved pain and muscle recovery after injury.”

    “I think of it as a way to get cardiac exercise without movement, which is really an exciting prospect for those with less mobility,” Sethi adds. 

    Some of the most impressive results of tested sauna usages include improvement in all-cause mortality2, which Sethi explains as “your overall chance of living longer.”

    “The absolute risk reduction [in this study2] is 18% and relative risk reduction 40% for those who sauna versus those who do not—that is impressive,” she emphasizes.

    First thing’s first: Anyone, regardless of age, can benefit from a simple cleanse, moisturize, protect regimen. “Sunscreen is a must from birth onwards,” notes board-certified dermatologist Rebecca Marcus, M.D., founder of MaeiMD. “And antioxidant protection can benefit those at any age.”

    Board-certified dermatologist Loretta Ciraldo, M.D., FAAD, agrees: “If the advice is what we dermatologists recommend—washing your face with gentle cleanser at least once, preferably twice a day, and using SPF 30 to 60 when outdoors—this is something that I support, and it is really never too early to start this,” she tells mindbodygreen.

    It’s when pre-teens start to dabble in potent, photosensitizing actives—acids, retinols, and the like—that they start wreaking havoc on their skin barriers, she adds. However, depending on when a child hits adolescence, a derm might actually recommend these stronger ingredients to target specific skin concerns (namely, acne). 

    “Some 11 year olds are already experiencing skin changes associated with puberty, in which case retinoids and other acne-fighting ingredients are indicated,” notes Marcus. So the answer is a resounding it depends, but kids should always get the green light from a derm before slathering on potentially-irritating ingredients. 

    Now, things get tricky when it comes to hydrating, collagen-promoting ingredients—think peptides, growth factors, etc. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that these ingredients are receiving more air time on social media and reaching a younger demographic—after all, true skin longevity starts with early prevention methods! And while they don’t carry the same irritation potential as retinoids (assuming you use a high-quality formula), they also aren’t really that necessary for a much younger age group. 

    “We start to lose collagen in our 20s1, so that would be a good time to start using more advanced actives, such as peptides and growth factors, which function to help stimulate collagen,” Marcus says. When you’re very young and your skin is already chock-full of collagen, there’s not much to replenish. 

    Sorry to say, an 11-year-old slathering on an innovative peptide-infused formula is likely just wasting money (a lot of money, given the steep price tags on some of these innovative, biotech-derived confections). The serum will hydrate their skin, no doubt, but they don’t necessarily need the collagen-restoring capabilities those peptides provide. 

    An early adolescent would fare far better with focusing on sun protection (and perhaps acne, considering the skin starts to produce more oil due to hormonal changes), waiting until young adulthood when collagen maintenance becomes front and center to use specific antioxidants, retinols, and other collagen-stimulating actives.

    Things have not changed in the last few decades. The CDC reports that falls continue to be the source of health complications1 for elders 65 years and older. More than one out of four older people falls each year.

    Over the course of 27 years, I’ve developed methods to help thousands of people get up and down safely in my therapeutic yoga practice.

    Since we do yoga primarily on the floor, that means that each student of mine has had to get some experience moving down to and up off the floor independently. I like to make sure that every person that I work with can move down to the floor and then get up off the floor with as much grace as possible.

    The most effective method that I use to do so is called the Therapeutic Sun Salutation©. I teach it to everyone—young and old, fit or frail. Everyone that I encounter gets their own version of this important practice.  

    I especially love this practice because once a client learns how to use it, they can reduce their risk of being stuck on the floor in the event of an accidental fall. They can also use it to check in with their body and do a self-assessment of how well they are moving and functioning in that moment.

    The research involved assessing the levels of both vitamin D and CRP in over 5,000 Irish adults over the age of 50, accounting for any confounding variables. Their analysis, revealed that participants who were deficient in vitamin D had a higher status of CRP.

    “In conclusion, older adults with deficient vitamin D status had higher levels of inflammation as measured by CRP,” the study authors write, adding that given inflammation is an important pathological driver of chronic diseases of aging, plus the fact that research shows vitamin D therapy can reduce inflammation in some disease settings, “optimising vitamin D status could represent an effective low risk/low-cost pathway to modulate inflammation in community dwelling older adults.”
