Want to search out ghosts in these local haunted cemeteries? Greenville, SC, and several places in the Upstate are home to some seriously spooky cemeteries with ghost stories to go along with them. When a place has a troubled past, that usually means the alleged presence of spirits is inevitable. The Upstate has seen its fair share of disturbing things.

Here are some of the creepiest haunted cemeteries to explore that might just give you the heebie-jeebies.

Old cemeteries can be a peaceful place to stroll through and ponder what life was like for those at rest. They can also be a place filled with stories of sickness, poverty, and unrest. These stories are the ones that allegedly create the spirits that haunt us to this day.

Some places are more filled with unrest than others. The Upstate seems to be full of places where some “spirited fun” might be found. Either way, at the very least it’s a place to get some fresh air where there won’t be a bunch of the living to deal with.

Haunted Cemeteries Near Me: Upstate, SC

Blast Battle Ground Cemetery – Gaffney, SC

On a cold January Morning in 1781, the British troops on the battlefield met with a deadly outcome. There at what is now known as the Cowpens National Battlefield, 135 men died in a battle that only lasted an hour. Nearly twice that many were injured and most likely succumbed to their injuries later. A place that saw so much bloodshed is bound to have reports of mysterious happenings, and this place is no exception.

Visitors report seeing injured men coming towards them, muttering things that would be said during the war. Some have even reported hearing the sound of gun blasts. Even if you don’t get a visit from an injured soldier, a trip to the Cowpens National Battlefield would still make a cool history lesson.

Cemetery Hill – Spartanburg, SC

The term “Rest in Peace”, was something a bunch of the residents at Cemetery Hill didn’t find to hold true. The expansion of the Charleston and Western railroad lines through downtown Spartanburg had an obstacle to deal with. The “Freemans Cemetery”, also known as the first Black cemetery in Spartanburg for freed slaves.

The cemetery was near where West Main Street crosses the train tracks that ultimately overcame the obstacle. In 1900 the graves were moved to Cemetery Hill where the freed slaves could maybe finally find their restful eternity.

We’re not sure if they were successful, but there’s only one way to find out.

Iva Cemetery – Iva, SC

Just walking past this cemetery at sunset is enough for visitors to invite a visit from a male apparition. It is said he follows you until you turn to look at him.

Magnolia Cemetery – Spartanburg, SC

The oldest cemetery in Spartanburg sits quietly behind the Krispy Kreme in Spartanburg. Just driving past it gives me the heebee jeebees, If you are braver than I am and decide to venture back there, just be sure not to spit out your watermelon seeds.

The ghosts don’t mind. Actually nobody probably minds. It’s just another one of those wacky laws on the books that aren’t worth the trouble of addressing. But just to be safe, stick to seedless watermelon should you plan a picnic at Magnolia Cemetery.

Oakwood Cemetery – Spartanburg, SC

The most infamous of cemeteries in the Upstate and one of the most haunted places in the state of South Carolina is Oakwood Cemetery.

Two of the residents of Oakwood are rumored to still make their presence known to this day. A woman and her child are regularly seen by visitors. She’s commonly referred to as “The Lady In White”. People say they experience a feeling of pain and anguish when she appears. That she is doomed to search for her son. He’s there though and he likes to play tricks on people who come to visit his grave.

I’ve read that the mother was visiting a grave at the cemetery and the little boy fell to his death there, back behind the potters’ field portion of the grounds.

In order to make room for railroad development in 1914, over 314 gravesites were moved here from Magnolia Cemetery. This only added to the unrest at Oakwood Cemetery. If you wander during the day back behind the potter’s section, you might come across the entrance to a strange tunnel.

Macabre things have occurred in modern years at this cemetery. Things we won’t mention here, but for this reason, we don’t suggest you visit here at night.

Haunted Cemeteries Near Me: Greenville, SC

Duncan Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery – Greenville

Once touted as one of the most haunted places in Greenville, the remains of this cemetery are now on display in the parking lot of a new Walmart Market. Reports of children’s laughter and bouncing balls were popular with people who would visit this cemetery prior to the clearing out and development of the property.

I’m not sure if what has transpired would make the possibility of an encounter more or less likely. A trip to this centuries-old cemetery is definitely interesting, and you can always grab some milk and eggs while you’re there.

New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery – Tigerville, SC

This small church burial ground is the resting place for over 100 people. Some of them interred as far back as the turn of the last century. There are lots of stories on the internet of people experiencing odd things here. From the unexplained sounds of rustling in the surrounding woods to an apparition forming from a man’s pipe smoke, the grounds of this cemetery are a hotspot for hauntings.

Springwood Cemetery – Greenville

This cemetery dates back to 1829 and many prominent people from Greenville’s history are here. The cemetery began as a family-owned plot of land in the 1700s to be used as a gravesite. Later on, more acres were added, including a public African-American section around 1863.

While there have been rumors of eerie occurrences for years, like footsteps and the laughter of children absent any living children nearby, perhaps one of the more creepy aspects of this cemetery is that there are more than 2,600 unnamed graves with no headstones. Other sites are simply marked with very little information like “Two little children. Names unknown. Found in the old vault. 1912.” Some suggest that these may have been children of sharecroppers but no one really knows for sure.

I stumbled across the story of Fannie Heldmann. Fannie’s father, George, a prominent businessman in Greenville, arranged for her to marry his business partner. Fannie is said to have “gone insane” while planning her wedding (which she clearly was not happy about). One night in 1889, she slipped out of her bedroom, walked down to what we know as Falls Park, and drowned herself in the Reedy River. Her grave is marked with an enormous concrete angel. Fannie’s unsettled spirit haunts the cemetery. I’ve yet to visit at night, so if anyone would like to join me, I’ll be waiting in the car!

How These Businesses Are Using Halloween to Scare Up Extra Revenue

Fresh flowers typically means Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, but this year, UrbanStems, an online flower delivery company, is trying to convince its customers to send a bouquet for Halloween too.

On October 1, the Washington, D.C-based business unveiled four new designs of pink, red, and orange roses, mums, and calla lilies that each come with a custom tarot card.

UrbanStems CEO Meenakshi Lala knows that most people “don’t wake up in October and say, ‘Hey Halloween is coming. I should be sending flowers to mom,’” but she is betting on a shift in spooky season spending. As more consumers shell out for gifts and home decorations, instead of just candy and costumes, UrbanStems is offering a limited-edition collection of moody florals.

“Halloween has grown far beyond the trick or treating,” says Lala. “It’s become, I think, one of the biggest cultural moments of the year.”

She is not the only executive making that calculation. This Halloween, candy companies, chocolate makers, and all the usual pumpkin spicers will not be the only businesses angling for boost. Plenty of other businesses have found ways to channel the macabre and capitalize on the holiday fervor. The founders and CEOs of these unlikely holiday beneficiaries say Halloween has become a multi-billion-dollar opportunity to drive sales with limited-edition products and boost brand recognition with Instagram-able moments.

This boost could come at a particularly beneficial time. Shoppers have grown increasingly sour about higher prices from tariffs and a weaker job market. Last month, consumer sentiment fell near a record low. After the University of Michigan released its latest survey, Elizabeth Renter, a senior economist at NerdWallet, wrote in an analysis, “You have to go back to the Great Recession to see economic vibes this bad.”

Despite the foul mood, Halloween remains a bright spot that consumers are willing to open their wallets for. Americans are expected to spend a record $13.1 billion on Halloween this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. That’s up from $11.6 billion last year. More than half of people said they planned to decorate their home or yard, and a quarter said they will be attending a haunted house.

Some of those thrill seekers will be driving through one in Rockaway, New Jersey where Streamline Car Wash hosts its annual “Screamline Haunted Car Wash” The small business’s Halloween tradition started five years ago and has grown to include more than two dozen actors, animatronics, fog machines, and a light show. Last year, people drove from as far away as Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, says co-owner Adam Gilbert. The event even attracted a few influencers, whose videos racked up millions of views and hundreds of thousands of shares.

“It was crazy,” recalls Gilbert, who says about 1,000 cars turned out in a single night last year with the line stretching into two neighboring towns. This year, to better handle that level of demand, Streamline is offering timed tickets for $40, not including fees.

While the car wash turns a profit on its haunted house (Gilbert declined to specify how much), the biggest benefit has been exposure. Plenty of those visitors return for actual car washes, adds Gilbert, who typically sees an uptick in sales and unlimited memberships in the months following the haunted house

“It’s our biggest advertisement of the year,” he says.

Coconut water brand Vita Coco is also thinking beyond its core products this Halloween. The New York City-based company dropped mystery kits filled with Halloween costumes for Labubu dolls. The free perk for loyalty members prompted more than 4,000 people to join the brand’s loyalty program and sold out within less than a minute.

“We noticed people on social talking about dressing up their Labubus for Halloween, so we figured, why not create some costumes ourselves?” Vita Coco chief marketing officer Jane Prior wrote in an email to Inc. “The response blew us away.”

Still, founders and CEOs should remember that moments like Halloween “are not dollar for dollar instant gratification,” says Lala. “You have to continue winning that customer back with every transaction.”

That’s why UrbanStems is already working on a new seasonal floral drop for Thanksgiving.

Seven Modern Classic Movies To Rewatch For The Ultimate Fall Vibes

The time has come! The leaves are changing colors, the stores are starting to smell like cinnamon, and everything pumpkin is available at our fingertips! All of this could only mean one thing, and it’s that our favorite way to end our day is with one of these movies for the foreseeable future!

Halloweentown (1998)

You simply can’t go through the fall/Halloween season without watching Halloweentown. It would be borderline criminal. There is nothing quite like the music that plays when the Cromwell kids first enter Halloweentown, seeing Debbie Reynolds be the greatest movie grandmother of all time, or seeing the quaint town of St. Helens, Oregon, transform on screen into our dream location.

Practical Magic (1998)

This movie is as close to perfect as a movie has ever been. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman light up on screen and bring such warmth and whimsy into the film. This movie features the best song placement in our memory with ‘This Kiss’ by Faith Hill, and features a quote we have lived by ever since. So remember, always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.

Knives Out (2019)

A murder mystery featuring Chris Evans as the villain, Daniel Craig as the detective, and a career-high performance from Ana de Armas? Count us in! This movie does a perfect job at keeping you guessing, yet if you watch it again, you will see each clue that led up to the reveal clear as day. It’s the ideal fall family watch with a star-studded cast.

Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice is synonymous with the spooky season. Like clockwork, the calendar turns to October and we are set ready to sing along to some Harry Belafonte and remember what sparked our love for obscure art and tiny replicas. Beetlejuice has become a cultural mainstay; you can’t go into any Halloween section without seeing the face of Michael Keaton looking back at you, as it should be.

Twilight (2008)

It is officially Twilight season! We have ‘Eyes on Fire’ by Blue Foundation on repeat, we are relishing in the rainy days, and we are falling right back into a time when the only choice we had to make that held weight was if we were Team Edward or Team Jacob. This movie launched the careers of some of the best working actors today, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, so technically, we have Stephanie Meyer to thank for the best Batman movie!

Hocus Pocus (1993)

We know we said Beetlejuice is synonymous with spooky season, but Hocus Pocus gives it a run for its money! From the endless quotes that have become a normal part of the cultural zeitgeist to the Sanderson Sisters being on every piece of merch imaginable, there is no escaping what a timeless film Hocus Pocus has evolved into.

Scooby-Doo (2002)

Scooby-Doo may just be the best casted movie of all time. They nailed every single role and crafted the world of Spooky Island in a way that made it feel real. We still think not making Spooky Island into a real amusement park was a miss of epic proportions. We actually are going to go watch this movie right now, and relish in what masterpiece it is.

There are, of course, the option to cosplay as any of the characters from the movie. But here are just a few more <em>K-Pop Demon Hunters-</em>inspired costume ideas for you to consider this Halloween! </p> <h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soda-can-x-ramen-cup">Soda Can x Ramen Cup</h5> <p>Our first costume idea inspired by <em>K-Pop Demon Hunters </em>is a soda can and ramen cup duo. We all know the Saja Boys’ iconic ‘Soda Pop’ jingle by heart at this point. And we can only hope that there’s no shortage of soda can costumes out there. You can grab a partner and dress them up as Huntrix’s ramen cup, found in one of the most meme-worthy scenes ever. It’s almost like you’re preaching to your friends. It’s that back-of-the-bar-room vibe where it almost feels like a bunch of Shakespeare nerds are getting together.”</p> <p>A graduate of Texas State University, where he studied acting, Herrera says a “party animal instinct kicks in” for the drunk actor that makes acting become “like second nature.”</p> <p>“As an actor, you’re always in your head about something…And then, as soon as you get five shots of tequila in your body, all that goes out the window, the confidence level goes up, and you’re like, ‘You know what? I don’t care. I’m just going to be me. I’m going to be as authentic as I can be. I’m going to nerd out about Shakespeare, or I’m going to nerd out about Halloween, and I’m going to take you guys along for the ride,’” says Herrera. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Drunk Dracula</em> returns to Houston for Halloween. <span class="image-credit"><span class="credit-label-wrapper">Credit:</span> Travis Emery</span></figcaption></figure> <p>In honor of Halloween, the ensemble will take audiences on a drunken ride through Bram Stoker’s 1897 vampire tale <em>Dracula</em>.</p> <p>“We have the book that we reference, and then the drunk actor has the freedom to mess around with it,” says Herrera. “And there’s a lot of inclusion of pop culture references. We stay with the times, with the zeitgeist, and what’s currently trending, and we have a lot of fun with it.”</p> <p>For his own take on the Transylvanian bloodsucker, Herrera says he found inspiration in Stoker’s source material and every single film he could get his hands on featuring Dracula. He also pulled from some unexpected places.</p> <p>“A little bit of my own twist into it is pulling from a lot of performers, like I pull from Michael Jackson and Prince and anybody who has stage presence, because with a character as iconic as Dracula, you have to command the room,” he says. “I think leaning into campiness has done wonders for the production, because at the end of the day, we’re all being silly, and we’re all portraying these heightened versions of these characters. But at the same time, I’ve taken bits and pieces from every iteration of the character.”</p> <p>The production marks Herrera’s second year in the role of Dracula, and he says the show developed something akin to a cult following last year.</p> <p>“I didn’t know so many people were into vampires,” says Herrera. “We had a lot of people come see the show multiple times, and then they’d bring their friends, and they’re really there for the vampire. They’re there to see some blood sucking and get hypnotized. And by the end, you won’t know who’s bit or not bit,” he says with a laugh. “It’s fun connecting with the audience that way, and that’s essential—to make them feel included, even people in the back rows. To give them a memory to leave the show with.”</p> <p>The result of it all is a show that can be completely different from night to night, with Herrera saying there is “a lot of unpredictability to it.”</p> <p>“You never really know what kind of performance you’re walking into. The configuration of the cast, whoever the drunk actor is, it always changes. It’s almost like you’re preaching to your friends. It’s that back-of-the-bar-room vibe where it almost feels like a bunch of Shakespeare nerds are getting together.”<o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> A graduate of Texas State University, where he studied acting, Herrera says a “party animal instinct kicks in” for the drunk actor that makes acting become “like second nature.”<o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> “As an actor, you’re always in your head about something…And then, as soon as you get five shots of tequila in your body, all that goes out the window, the confidence level goes up, and you’re like, ‘You know what? I don’t care. I’m just going to be me. I’m going to be as authentic as I can be. We stay with the times, with the zeitgeist, and what’s currently trending, and we have a lot of fun with it.” </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> For his own take on the Transylvanian bloodsucker, Herrera says he found inspiration in Stoker’s source material and every single film he could get his hands on featuring Dracula. He also pulled from some unexpected places. <o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> “A little bit of my own twist into it is pulling from a lot of performers, like I pull from Michael Jackson and Prince and anybody who has stage presence, because with a character as iconic as Dracula, you have to command the room,” he says. “I think leaning into campiness has done wonders for the production, because at the end of the day, we’re all being silly, and we’re all portraying these heightened versions of these characters. But at the same time, I’ve taken bits and pieces from every iteration of the character.”<o:p/> </p> <p> The production marks Herrera’s second year in the role of Dracula, and he says the show developed something akin to a cult following last year.</p> <p>“I didn’t know so many people were into vampires,” says Herrera. “We had a lot of people come see the show multiple times, and then they’d bring their friends, and they’re really there for the vampire. They’re there to see some blood sucking and get hypnotized. They just soak it up.”<o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> But even if you’re not royalty for the night, Herrera says you may still find yourself in Dracula’s crosshairs. <o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> “As Dracula, drunk or not, I like to lurk around the audience. And by the end, you won’t know who’s bit or not bit,” he says with a laugh. “It’s fun connecting with the audience that way, and that’s essential—to make them feel included, even people in the back rows. To give them a memory to leave the show with.”<o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> The result of it all is a show that can be completely different from night to night, with Herrera saying there is “a lot of unpredictability to it.”<o:p/> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal"> “You never really know what kind of performance you’re walking into. The configuration of the cast, whoever the drunk actor is, it always changes. When you purchase your ticket, you’ll have to choose a time to ride the train. </p> <p>The train is completely decked out with a huge skeleton face that shoots out smoke from the mouth. It’s so cool. The premise of the ride is that you are searching for missing college students and that aliens or zombies or something else got them in the woods. It’s really dark so they can move with ease. The train will stop along the way with scenes set that involve flashing lights, a gun fight, and fireballs. It’s very well done in terms of theatrics. No one jumps onto the train, and the theatrics are all on the right side of the train if you want to get closer to the action. </p> <p>The ride is about 20-25 minutes long. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Things to Do at Tweetsie Railroad During the Ghost Train </h2> <p>The park’s carnival rides are all open – the Ferris wheel, tornado ride, spinning cups, planes, the drop tower, and a few others that I don’t know the names of. The arcade is open as well plus there are some spooky-themed shows. </p> <p>The Boneyard has an Enchanted Forest, which is a little scary as some characters will jump out at you and a chainsaw guy may try to chase you. There’s a lady with a crocodile, too, which I found pretty fun. There were tons of families there with smaller kids who are braver than us. There was literally a dad pushing a stroller through the Enchanted Forest, who my daughter and I almost ran into on our way out being chased by the chainsaw guy. We are kind of easy to scare.</p> <p>One thing that my daughters and I absolutely loved were the dance parties with Bigfoot and other Halloween-ish characters. They were so much fun! You can also trick-or-treat throughout the park, and Tweetsie has bags available for guests. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">What ages are best for the Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad?</h2> <p>This will depend entirely on how scared your kids get and what freaks them out. There were lots of kids on the actual train ride and throughout the park. </p> <p>The train ride is very dark and very loud at times. The whistle is loud, the fireballs are loud and bright, the gunshots are loud. We loved all of this but your kids may find it too overwhelming.
