The shooting happened around 6:12 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the intersection of Broad Street and Packer Avenue, police said.

When officers got to the scene, they found a 22-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest, torso and arm, police explained. He was taken to a nearby hospital by medics where he was pronounced dead around 6:48 p.m.

A second man, 23, was also found suffering from at least two gunshot wounds to his torso, according to police. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

According to Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small, investigators have found 21 spent shell casings that appear to be from at least one semi-automatic weapon.

Officials explained that they also found a loaded magazine at the scene.

A four-door sedan was found still running with at least 15 bullet holes in the driver’s side and rear windshield, Small said.

Cameras nearby captured some of the incident, Small said. The vehicle hit by gunfire continued to drive half a block before it turned onto Broad Street and crashed into a parked car.

Small said that a woman was in the parked car when it was hit, so she was taken to police headquarters to be questioned as a witness.

There were also several witnesses at the scene when police got there who are being questioned by investigators, Small said.

The shooter, or shooters, were allegedly last seen in either a silver or dark-colored small SUV that was traveling northbound on Broad Street away from Packer Avenue, Small said.

  • Couple flees gun violence in US—now they’re thriving n Europe

After experiencing a drive-by shooting in Kansas City, 37-year-old Sam Correll decided he was “just done” with the U.S. It was the summer of 2024, and 60 days later, he and his partner, 29-year-old Spencer Claiborne, had sold their home in Missouri and moved to Europe.

They are among more than 1,000 Americans who have expatriated over the past year—a phenomenon that has been on the rise since the beginning of the year. Roughly 1,285 U.S. citizens left the country in the first quarter of 2025, according to a report from CS Global Partners, which analyzed statistics from the U.S. Federal Register. That is about 102 percent more than in the last quarter of 2024.

Should Americans continue to leave the U.S. at that pace, 2025 could mark a record in the number of U.S. citizens relocating abroad—an exodus that could put the country’s economy in trouble.

Leaving the Midwest for a Small Country in Europe

Correll and Spencer had considered leaving the U.S. for a while before the event that prompted them to decide the time had come for their big move.

“I was actually at a cheesecake factory picking up a piece of cheesecake to take to a friend in the hospital, and there was a drive-by shooting during prom season,” Correll said. “I got knocked over from the stampede of kids running away from the shooter outside. And I was just there, like, ‘What are we doing? It’s time for a change,’” he said.

Correll and Spencer swapped Kansas City—the city of the Chiefs and Taylor Swifts, as their European friends know it—for Albania, a country that was not on their radar when they started their search for a new home away from home.

“We went to Portugal, Malta, Italy, Spain, the U.K., and had a great time, but we didn’t really click with a specific city or anything,” Correll said.

Then they learned that Albania offers Americans 12-month visa-free travel on arrival. “It’s a really, really easy destination to leave and then figure it out as you go, as opposed to someplace like Portugal or Italy.”

That made the difference for Correll and Claiborne, who were able to depart their previous life behind quickly—leaving their first home, which they had bought in Kansas City in 2019.

“It was a historic stone cottage that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we really poured a lot of heart and soul into,” Claiborne told Newsweek. “I like to say it was like a child. We had finally gotten it all finished and it was exactly what we wanted—and that was the point in which we were selling,” he said.

Claiborne was a little hesitant at first to let it all go, “Like, man, we just spent all this time and effort and energy to make our house perfect,” he said. “But I wasn’t going to let that hold us back.”

Now Claiborne, who is talking to Newsweek from their sun-kissed terrace in Albania with views of the sea, “can’t imagine a better place to live.

Striking Out on Their Own—by Helping Others Do the Same

Both Correll and Claiborne left good jobs behind—one was a tech consultant working with global companies, the other sold accounting software and helped large companies implement enterprise systems.

But one of the things they love about living in Albania is that the work culture there is not nearly as demanding as in the U.S.

“The U.S. is just so work-oriented. You wake up before the sun rises, you get in your car, you commute to work, you work, and then you go home after the sun sets, and maybe you have a couple hours of television,” Claiborne said.

“And I think as I got more into the kind of rut and routine of a corporate career, I realized that’s not something that was going to make my soul feel happy for another 30, 40 years,” he added.

The lower cost of living in Albania, as well, has helped to make up for some of that lost income.

While Claiborne and Correll worried about taking a pay cut and striking out on their own, they found something they love doing in Albania: helping others who might want to leave the U.S. through their company, Smile Abroad.

They started with an idea to open a dental tourism business there, but that quickly morphed after they realized, through Facebook and Reddit, “the sheer number of people that were feeling similar to the way that we were feeling, especially as this year progressed and as the new administration came into power,” Correll said.

The couple has been receiving five to 10 calls a day for months from people seeking urgent assistance in “getting out” of the U.S. A Reddit post discussing their experience moving to Albania has garnered nearly 500,000 views as of now.

Through the business route opened up by their new initiative, they were able to apply for residency. “It’s very straightforward for Americans. The requirements are very minimal, to be frank. It’s a very easy path,” Correll said. “This is up to the immigration office, but oftentimes Americans are issued five-year residency permits upon their first application.”

    Thriving in a Different Culture

Correll and Claiborne have been pleasantly surprised by Albania, a place where the first question someone asks you upon meeting you is not, “What do you do?” they said. They have found the peace of mind they were seeking in disconnecting from the U.S., which now feels a world away.

“I think I was having a conversation the other day with an Albanian friend of mine trying to explain the concept of food deserts, which is something that we have a lot in America, where there’s no grocery store, no access to fresh food within walking or driving distance of a lot of homes,” Claiborne said. “That’s just not a concept here in Albania. There’s fresh fruits, fresh veggies.”

The couple have found a thriving community of digital nomads and expats, and they have been trying to mingle with the locals.

“It’s also been wonderful to disconnect from the noise and the chaos that’s going on in the United States,” Claiborne said. “One of the things I like to tell people when they have a consultation call with us is that, after you get out, a lot of people do what we did—which is you kind of sleep, you kind of hibernate for like a month,” he explained.

“And then you come out of the fog and you’re free from the noise. You can hear fireworks in the distance without ducking, thinking it’s gunshots. And you can kind of relax and enjoy life. And so that’s definitely been what I think we’ve gained from this.”

Surprisingly, both think they have been made more patriotic by living in Albania. “Hearing our language teacher talk about how, during communism, it was the voice of American news, the Radio Free Europe, that alerted them to the fall of Yugoslavia. You know, it’s really opened my eyes to the good that America and Americans do and have done across the globe,” Claiborne said.

But neither is thinking about going back to the U.S. anytime soon. “I think prices are too high. Of course, never say never, but I’m very happy being in Albania now,” Claiborne said.

“I very much appreciate and love the country that I was born in, but it’s in a dark spot right now. And for my mental health, at least, it’s not a place that I want to be,” Correll said.

Read the full interview with Sam Correll and Spencer Claiborne:

What is your name, and what do you do?

Claiborne: My name is Spencer Claiborne. I am 29 years old and I am now a relocation consultant helping people move to Albania. Before this, when I lived in the United States, I sold accounting software and helped large companies implement enterprise systems. So quite the career change.

Correll: I’m Sam Carell. I am 37 years old. I was a tech consultant in the U.S. working with global companies, building their websites and the back end of that sort of thing. And since moving to Albania, I still do a little bit of that, but we are largely helping people relocate to Albania.

When did you decide to leave the U.S.?

Correll: We had thought about this for a few years. We’d talked off and on, we wanted to look for something new. In late 2023, early 2024, we took a three-month scouting trip throughout Europe. We dove into YouTube and decided, these are potential countries we might find a home in. We went to Portugal, Malta, Italy, Spain, the U.K., and had a great time, but we didn’t really click with a specific city or anything.

“It solidified, at least for me, that we definitely wanted to leave the Midwest, but we didn’t have the right spot yet. So we went home. After being there a couple of months, I was actually at a cheesecake factory picking up a piece of cheesecake to take to a friend in the hospital. And there was a drive-by shooting during prom season. I got knocked over from the stampede of kids running away from the shooter outside. And I was just there, like, ‘What are we doing? It’s time for a change.’ And I think that really was a springboard for us to, like… Take action, list our house, and leave. And 60 days later, we were in Albania.

Did you have any reservations about leaving the U.S.?

Claiborne: No, not really. My family was very supportive. But we had a home in Kansas City which we had bought in 2019, and it was our first home. It was a historic stone cottage that during the COVID-19 pandemic, we really poured a lot of heart and soul into. I like to say it was like a child. And so, we had finally gotten it all finished and to be very, very nice and just exactly what we wanted. And that was the point in which we were selling.

“I think I was a little hesitant, like, man, we just spent all this time and effort and energy to make our house perfect. But I wasn’t going to let that hold us back. I think that was basically it, honestly, is the house. But I’m much happier here. I can’t imagine a better place to live, being able to wake up and look at the sea.”

Now you’ve set up a business to help other Americans move to Albania. When did you realize there was a market for this?

Claiborne: Our intention wasn’t to build a business to help Americans move abroad. We actually started a business to help people with dental tourism in Albania, and we still do that. Hence the name [of our website] Smile Abroad, it was going to be about dental tourism. But it really morphed into something more than that when we realized, especially through Facebook and Reddit, all the sheer number of people that were feeling similar to the way that we were feeling, especially as this year progressed and as the new administration came into power. That they really wanted to get out.

“And what makes Albania uniquely attractive, especially for Americans, is that they can get 12 months visa-free travel on arrival. So it’s a really, really easy destination to leave and then figure it out as you go, as opposed to someplace like a Portugal or Italy, where you have to do a lot of work in the States, a lot of coordination before you even land. For a lot people, this has been an urgent concern. And Sam has been taking five, 10 calls a day for months now from people that really need urgent assistance in getting out.

What have you gained from this move?

Correll: I can tell you what I’ve lost, and that’s about 70 pounds. Definitely peace of mind, happiness. Look, I was having a conversation the other day with an Albanian friend of mine trying to explain the concept of food deserts, which is something that we have a lot in America, where there’s no grocery store, no access to fresh food within walking or driving distance of a lot of homes. That’s just not a concept here in Albania. There’s fresh fruits, fresh veggies.

“I think we’ve also found a community of a lot of other nomads and expats and local friends. And also just, it’s been wonderful to disconnect from the noise and the chaos that’s going on in the United States. One of the things I like to tell people when they have a consultation call with us is after you get out, a lot of people do what I did, which is you kind of sleep, you kind hibernate for like a month. And then you come out of the fog and you’re free from the noise. You can hear fireworks in the distance without ducking thinking it’s gunshots. And you can kind of relax and enjoy life. And so that’s definitely been what I think I’ve gained from this.

Claiborne: The U.S. is just so work-oriented. You wake up before the sun rises, you get in your car, you commute to work, you work, and then you go home after the sun sets, and maybe you have a couple hours of television. And I think as I got more into the kind of rut and routine of a corporate career, I realized that’s not something that was going to make my soul feel happy for doing, you know, for another 30, 40 years.

“And while I definitely worry sometimes about taking a pay cut and striking it out on our own and doing our own thing, I have been much more satisfied with both the ability to help people really transform their lives by moving abroad and by the wonderful work-life balance that’s offered here in the Mediterranean. And also the lower cost of living here in Albania helps make up for some of that lost income.

Would you ever consider going back to the U.S.?

Claiborne: I’m never gonna say never, we have a long life ahead of us. And I love America. I think moving to Albania has actually made me more patriotic and more appreciative of America and what it stands for across the world. You know, hearing our language teacher talk about how during communism, it was the voice of American news, Radio Free Europe, that alerted them to the fall of Yugoslavia. It’s really opened my eyes to the good that America and Americans do and have done across the globe. That being said, in the near term, I don’t see returning. I think prices are too high. Of course, you know, never say never, but I’m very happy being in Albania now.

Correll: I very much agree with that. I’m not gonna write it off. Like, I very appreciate and love the country that I was born in, but it’s in a dark spot right now. And for my mental health, at least, it’s not a place that I want to be.

  • Tactics used in the Michigan church attack resemble a new ‘hybrid threat’ meant to maximize damage, security expert says | Fortune

The suspect in the attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Mich., appeared to use a multiple tactics designed to increase chaos and create a “fatal funnel,” according to a security analyst.

Donell Harvin, a homeland security and public health emergency expert at Georgetown University, told CNN on Sunday that the attacker may have conducted pre-operational surveillance and come up with a plan that maximizes fatalities and damage.

“This looks like a relatively new type of what we call hybrid threat where not only you’re vehicle-ramming to maybe get some chaos but you’re also shooting into a crowd—and may have, it seems, potentially started the fire,” he added.

According to local law enforcement, the suspect crashed a pickup truck through the front door of the church, where hundreds of people were worshipping, then got out of the vehicle and started shooting with an assault rifle.

Moments later, police arrived on the scene and shot the man, who died and was later identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old from the nearby city of Burton.

The church was also set on fire, and U.S. law enforcement officials told NBC News that as many as three improvised devices were found at the scene. Michigan State Police bomb squad also responded to the attack.

“That all creates chaos,” Harvin told CNN. “It could create what we call a fatal funnel trying to drive people towards one location.”

The FBI said Sunday evening that it was leading the investigation and considers the case an “act of targeted violence.” The ATF said the suspect appeared to use gasoline to set the church on fire. Some possible explosive devices were found, but the ATF declined to say if they were used to start the blaze.

According to the New York Post, Sanford was a Marine Corps veteran who had served in Iraq. Police have not yet determined a motive or if he was connected to the church.

So far, at least four people have died from the attack, excluding Sanford, and several more are injured. Police said two of the victims were shot.

It was the latest attack on houses of worship recently. Earlier this month, a suspect set fire to a synagogue in Florida. In August, two children were killed during Mass at the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis. In July, two women were fatally shot at a church in Lexington, Ky.

“PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote on social media on Sunday.

  • Gunman sets Michigan church on fire while killing at least 2 people and injuring several others | Fortune

A gunman opened fire inside a church in Michigan during Sunday services before apparently setting the building ablaze, killing at least two people and injuring several others before police shot him, authorities said

Hundreds of people were inside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township when a 40-year-old man rammed a pickup truck through the front door, then got out of the vehicle and started shooting, Police Chief William Renye told reporters. Police believe he “deliberately” set the building on fire.

After the suspect left the church, two officers pursued him and “engaged in gunfire,” Renye said. The man was killed.

Flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the church for hours before the blaze was put out. First responders were then sifting through the wreckage.

“We do believe we will find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was,” Renye said.

Police initially said that nine people were injured. When Renye later announced that one additional person had died from a gunshot wound at a hospital, he did not say whether that person had been included in the number of injured.

The motive was not yet clear

Police said they did not yet have a motive for the fire or shooting. Investigators are searching the suspect’s residence in nearby Burton. Authorities did not provide any additional details about the suspect, including whether he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, widely known as the Mormon church.

It was the latest of many shooting attacks on houses of worship in the U.S. over the past 20 years, including one in August that killed two children during Mass at the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis.

President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the shooting. In a social media post, he applauded the FBI, who local authorities said are sending 100 agents to the area, for responding.

“PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote.

The church building, circled by a parking lot and a large lawn, is near residential areas and a Jehovah’s Witness church. It is in Grand Blanc Township, a community of roughly 40,000 people outside Flint.

    Tight-knit church community

The impact spread quickly to neighboring communities, including the small city that shares a name with the township.

“Although we are two separate governmental units, we are a very cohesive community,” said city of Grand Blanc Mayor John Creasey. “This sort of thing is painful for our entire community. I’m struggling to digest all that has happened, and my heart goes out to all of the affected families.”

Timothy Jones, 48, said his family is part of another Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation, or ward, about 15 minutes away, but that his children were at the Grand Blanc Township ward the night before the shooting for a youth fall festival. He and his family moved to Flint two years ago in large part because of how strong the faith’s community is in the area.

As people in his congregation got word of the shooting from texts and phone calls during their own Sunday service, the church went into lockdown and police came as a precaution, he said. His children were “frantically, just trying to get word that people were okay.”

Sundays are “supposed to be a time of peace and a time of reflection and worship,” Jones said. Yet in the wake of violence at other houses of worship across religions, a shooting “feels inevitable, and all the more tragic because of that” he added.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement that her heart was breaking for the community. “Violence anywhere especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” she said.

The shooting occurred the morning after Russell M. Nelson, the oldest-ever president of the faith, died at 101. The next president is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, per church protocol.

“The church is in communication with local law enforcement as the investigation continues and as we receive updates on the condition of those affected,” Doug Anderson, a spokesperson for Utah-based faith said in a statement.

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”

Some striking nurses at nearby Henry Ford Hospital left the picket line and ran the short distance to the church to help first responders, Teamsters Local 332 President Dan Glass said.

“Human lives matter more than our labor dispute.” Glass said.

  • Memorial garden honors teen shot and killed outside Roxborough High School

A new memorial garden has been planted in memory of a high school student who lost his life to gun violence.

Saturday marks three years since 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde was shot and killed outside Roxborough High School, right after a football scrimmage.

He died in his mother’s arms, and the shooting devastated the community.

School leaders said they wanted to reclaim the space where the shooting happened and transform it into a meaningful tribute for Nicolas.

The shooting happened on September 27, 2022, around 4:41 p.m., near the Roxborough High School football field, police said. When officers got to the scene, they found five shooting victims.

One of the victims, Nicolas, was pronounced dead shortly after at an area hospital, police said. Four other victims, all teenagers, sustained gunshot wounds ranging from graze injuries to more serious leg and arm injuries.

  • Trump calls Kirk ‘martyr’ as his wife forgives shooter | Fortune

President Donald Trump proclaimed Charlie Kirk a “martyr for American freedom” in a memorial ceremony to commemorate the political activist as Erika Kirk said she forgave the man who gunned down her husband.

“On that day, this evangelist for American liberty became immortal,” Trump said Sunday before tens of thousands of mourners inside the State Farm stadium in Glendale, Arizona. “He’s a martyr now for American freedom.”

Trump described how Kirk would ask him to fly across the country to appear at his events with little notice.

“You never wanted to let Charlie down,” Trump said. “He worked so hard you just didn’t want to let him down.”

But Trump also angrily attacked liberals and pledged to continue investigations of groups he accused of fostering violence.

“He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them,” he said. “That’s where I disagree with Charlie. I hate my opponent. And I don’t want the best for them.”

Trump also invoked one of his final exchanges with Kirk to support his long-threatened plan send in federal forces to crack down on crime in Chicago. “We’re going to have Charlie very much in mind when we go to Chicago,” he said.

“The depraved assassin” has been charged with Kirk’s killing, Trump said. “God willing he will receive the ultimate punishment.”

Moments earlier, Erika Kirk, vowed to continue her husband’s legacy, enrolling more campuses and students in the conservative movement he founded.

Kirk eulogized her husband in a tearful speech near the end of an hours-long memorial service for the conservative activist who was killed on Sept. 10. The service was heavily focused on Kirk’s Christian faith.

One of the most powerful moments came in Erika Kirk’s remarks, when she offered not a political message, but one of faith and forgiveness.

“I forgive him,” she said of the man who killed her husband. “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and it’s what Charlie would do.”

Throughout the service, Vice President JD Vance and other cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, focused on Christianity and how their faith aligned with Kirk’s, a notable blending of government and religion.

Kirk, newly named the chief executive officer of Charlie Kirk-founded Turning Point USA, said she was committed to the same campus events and debate he used to galvanize young conservatives and challenge liberal orthodoxy.

“Everything that Turning Point USA built through Charlie’s vision and hard work, we will make ten times greater through the power of his memory,” she said.

Kirk, 31, was killed on Sept. 10 during a debate at a Utah university, leaving behind Erika, and two young children, as well as the Turning Point USA organization he founded. On Sunday, he was lionized as a Christian martyr and patriot committed to free expression and challenging liberal orthodoxy.

Supporters vowed Kirk’s legacy would continue — growing bolder in the wake of his death. Turning Point has reported thousands of inquiries from people interested in starting high school and college chapters.

Kirk rose from a teenage political activist to a conservative influencer and standard bearer for MAGA youth, his surge in popularity intertwined with Trump’s political fortunes. He founded Turning Point with the goal of fighting liberal ideology on college campuses and propelling conservatism, and it’s now one of the most powerful conservative lobbying networks in the country. Turning Point USA grossed nearly $85 million in revenue last year and had chapters on over 3,300 college and high school campuses, according to its 2024 tax filing.

Kirk was also a relentless champion of Trump — even through his 2020 election defeat, as he helped chart the president’s return to power and gave guidance on policies and appointees.

Kirk’s get-out-the-vote efforts last year helped Trump’s improved showing among young voters and helping him flip Arizona back to Republicans in 2024.

In the days since Kirk’s killing, Trump and top Republicans have criticized left-wing rhetoric for helping foment violence, and pressured the Walt Disney Co., the parent of ABC, to sideline comedian Jimmy Kimmel for making critical comments about Kirk. The administration has moved to target left-leaning groups with racketeering probes and the potential loss of their tax-exempt status.

Erika Kirk heralded the First Amendment as “the most human amendment. We are naturally talking beings. Naturally believing beings. And the First Amendment protects our right to do both.”

  • Charlie Kirk memorial expected to fill football stadium in Arizona, with Trump and prominent MAGA figures paying tribute | Fortune

President Donald Trump and prominent members of his “Make America Great Again” movement will pay tribute Sunday to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whose slaying has marked a signal moment in America’s fraught political atmosphere.

The memorial service for Kirk, whom Trump credits with playing a pivotal role in his 2024 election victory, is expected to draw tens of thousands of mourners, including Vice President JD Vance, senior White House officials and young conservatives shaped by the 31-year-old firebrand.

Kirk’s assassination at a Sept. 10 appearance on a Utah college campus has set off a fierce debate about violence, decency and free speech in an era of deep political division. The shooting also has stirred fear among some Americans that Trump is trying to harness outrage over the killing as justification to suppress the voices of his critics and political opponents.

The service will take place at State Farm Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals west of Phoenix, where Kirk’s Turning Point organization is based. Security is expected to be tight, with a similar level of federal law enforcement presence as for the Super Bowl or other high-profile event.

Comments about Kirk have become a Trump administration target

Trump has blamed the “radical left” for Kirk’s death and threatened to go after liberal organizations and donors or others whom he feels are maligning or celebrating Kirk’s death.

He criticized House Democrats who voted against a House resolution that praised “the life and legacy” of Kirk, which passed the Republican-controlled House on Friday.

“Who could vote against that? All (Republicans) were saying was ‘Please condemn the assassination of a human being,’” Trump told reporters. “And (Democrats) said, ’No, no, we’re not going to do that.’”

Dozens of people, from journalists to teachers, already have lost their jobs as prominent conservative activists and administration officials target comments about Kirk that they deem offensive or celebratory. The retaliation has in turn ignited a debate over the First Amendment as the Trump administration promises retribution against those who air what are seen as disparaging remarks in the wake of Kirk’s death.

ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show off the air indefinitely following backlash from affiliated broadcasters and the Trump-appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission over the comedian’s remarks about Kirk.

The State Department also has warned it would revoke the visas of any foreigners who celebrated Kirk’s assassination.

A 22-year-old Utah man, Tyler Robinson, has been charged with killing Kirk and faces the death penalty if convicted of the most serious charges. Authorities have not revealed a clear motive in the shooting, but prosecutors say Robinson wrote in a text to his partner following the shooting that he “had enough” of Kirk’s hatred.

Kirk’s legacy of conservative political influence

Turning Point, the group Kirk founded to mobilize young Christian conservatives, became a multimillion-dollar operation under his leadership with enormous reach.

The tens of thousands expected to fill the stadium in Glendale for Kirk’s memorial is a testament to the massive influence he accumulated in conservative America.

Kirk was a provocateur who at times made statements that some called racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant and transphobic. That has drawn backlash from conservatives who view the criticism as cherry-picking a few select moments to insult the legacy they see of an inspirational conservative leader.

Kirk was a MAGA celebrity with a loyal following that turned out to support or argue with him as he traveled the country for the events like the one at Utah Valley University, where he was fatally shot. Kirk grew the organization, in large part, through the force of his personality and debating chops.

Arizona is the adopted home state of Kirk, who grew up outside Chicago and founded Turning Point there before moving the organization to Phoenix. Vance, who has said Kirk’s advocacy was a big reason Trump picked him to serve as vice president, transported Kirk’s casket from Utah to Arizona aboard Air Force Two the day after his death, and he later served as a guest host of Kirk’s podcast.

Scheduled speakers at the service include Trump, Vance, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Donald Trump Jr., right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson and White House aides Stephen Miller and Sergio Gor also are slated to speak.

Longtime worship leader Chris Tomlin will provide music, along with other big names in contemporary Christian music, including Brandon Lake, Phil Wickham, and husband-and-wife duo Kari Jobe Carnes and Cody Carnes.

Kirk’s widow, who has been named Turning Point’s new leader, also will speak. Erika Kirk pledged in an emotional speech days after his death that “the movement my husband built will not die.”

“I just feel like I’m just surviving in this world. He was my everything,” Staley said.

“My son was innocent. He bothered nobody.”

She said the four arrested in his death targeted him and that he was a regular at the corner store where he was shot.

“Why guns? Why kill innocent people?” she asked.

“He was just walking inside of a store. They had no reason to rob him. If they wanted to rob him, he would have given them his jewelry.”

On Saturday, she joined other community members in a march down University Boulevard in Melbourne, holding signs and calling for an end to gun violence.

Just a few weeks ago, a two-year-old girl named Bles’syn lost her life in a shooting, while both of her grandparents were shot and survived.

“Us as a community, we’re losing too many people,” said organizer Quamel Wynn.

“It’s a big issue for me because I live it, this is where I’m from. I have brothers, I have sisters, I have nieces, I have nephews, I have cousins, I have friends. So something that happens to them, it affects me.”

Melbourne Police are still searching for answers in the toddler’s slaying.
