Gujarat Election Exit Poll 2022: Date, timings, where to watch live streaming, and other details

Gujarat Election Exit Poll 2022: Gujarat Assembly election is being held in two phases, with the second and final phase concluding today (December 5). In the first phase, the election was held for 89 assembly segments. And in the second and last phase, which is currently underway, 93 assembly constituencies are up for grabs.

Gujarat Election Exit Poll Date and Timing: 6:30 pm, December 5

The Election Commission (EC) has directed that the exit polls cannot be broadcast or published between 8 am on November 12 and 6:30 pm on 5th December.

Himachal Pradesh went to polls in a single phase on November 12.

“Section 126A of the R.P. Act 1951 prohibits the conduct of Exit poll and dissemination of their results by means of print or electronic media during the period mentioned therein, i.e. between the hour fixed for the commencement of poll in the first phase and half an hour after the time fixed for the close of the poll for the last phase in all the States,” the commission said.

Gujarat Phase 1 Voting

Gujarat Phase 1 voting was held on December 1. Over 63 per cent turnout was recorded, which is lower than the number in 2017. The highest turnout was recorded in Narmada (78.24 per cent) followed by Tapi (76.91), Navsari (71.06), Morbi (69.95), Valsad (69.40) and Dangs (67.33). The lowest voter turnout was recorded in Botad 57.58 per cent.

Gujarat Phase 2 Voting

Gujarat Phase 2 polling is underway for 93 seats. Among the key seats going to polls in this phase are Ghatlodia, Vadgam, Viramgam, Gandhinagar South, Godhra, and Mahesana. BJP CM Bhupendra Patel is contesting from Ghatlodia while Hardik Patel is fighting from Viramgam, and Alpesh Thakor is from Gandhinagar South. Congress’ Jignesh Mevani is contesting from Vadgam.

Gujarat elections 2022 phase 2: PM Modi, Amit Shah cast their vote in Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast his vote in Ahmedabad today. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also vote from Ahmedabad. While Prime Minister Modi voted from Ranip, Shah will cast his vote from the Naranpura locality. The Prime Minister urged people to come out and vote in large numbers in phase 2 of voting in Gujarat.

PM Modi exercised his franchise at Nishan School in Ahmedabad’s Ranip. The PM tweeted, “Urging all those who are voting in Phase 2 of the Gujarat elections, particularly the young voters and women voters to vote in larger numbers. I will be casting my vote in Ahmedabad at around 9 am.”

Meanwhile, CM Bhupendrabhai Patel, Congress leader Bharat Solanki and BJP leader from Viramgam Hardik Patel have already cast their votes.

Besides PM Modi and Shah, other prominent people who will cast their vote today are Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel, Gujarat Congress chief Jagdish Thakor, former deputy CM Nitin Patel, former CM Shankersinh Vaghela, AAP CM candidate Isudan Gadhvi and cricketers Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and Irfan Pathan. Vadodara’s royal family and Congress leader and MP Shaktisinh Gohil will also cast their votes on Monday.

The second phase of voting is currently underway in Gujarat across 93 constituencies spread across districts such as Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Aravali, Anand, Chhota Udaipur, Kheda, Patan, Dahod, Mahsagar, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Panchmahal and Vadodara.

Around 2.51 crore voters are eligible to vote in this phase of the Gujarat elections. Of these, 1.29 crore are men, 1.22 crore are women and 894 are from the third gender, as per Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat P Bharathi.

Gujarat elections phase 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will cast their votes today. The Prime Minister will cast his vote in Ahmedabad’s Ranip locality whereas Shah will cast his vote in the Naranpura locality of the city.

The second phase of voting in Gujarat will begin today across 93 seats in central and north Gujarat to decide the fate of 833 candidates. In this phase of voting, total of 2.51 crore voters– including 1.29 crore men and 1.22 crore women– are eligible to cast their vote.

Top 10 points to know

– Prime Minister Modi is a registered voter from Ranip and cast his vote from the locality in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and previous elections. The constituency falls under the Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad.

– Besides Modi and Amit Shah, CM Bhupendrabhai Patel, former deputy CM Nitin Patel and several other union ministers will also exercise their rights on December 5.

– PM Modi met his mother Heeraben on Sunday and spent nearly 45 minutes with her before leaving for the BJP Gujarat headquarters.

– The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have fielded candidates in all 93 seats whereas the Congress is contesting on 90 seats.

– The Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) has fielded 12 candidates whereas the Bahujan Samaj Party has 44 candidates.

– Key constituencies in this phase are CM Bhupendrabhai Patel’s Ghatlodia constituency in Ahmedabad, BJP leader Hardik Patel’s constituency Viramgam in Ahmedabad, Alpesh Thakor’s constituency Gandhinagar South and Jignesh Mevani’s constituency Vadgam in Banaskantha.

– Other constituencies include Jetpur (Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly Sukhram Rathva) and Vaghodia (BJP rebel MP Madhu Shrivastav).

– Average voter turnout stood at 63.31 per cent in the first voting phase, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

– In the 2017 Assembly elections, the BJP won 51 seats, Congress 39 and independent candidates bagged 3 seats.

– The BJP bagged 37 seats in central Gujarat while the Congress got 22. The Congress secured 17 seats in north Gujarat whereas the BJP bagged 14.

Gujarat Assembly Election 2022: Gujarat goes for the second round of voting on December 5, which will take place across 14 districts in the north and central Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Gandhinagar. The results will be announced on December 8.

The BJP and AAP have fielded candidates in all 93 of the seats that will vote in the second phase of elections, while the Congress has named candidates in 90 and has formed an alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in three of them.

Gujarat Assembly Election 2022: The second and final phase of the Gujarat Assembly election will take place on Monday, December 5. More than 60 per cent of eligible voters turned out for the first round of voting on Thursday. This time around, there are a total of 1,621 candidates running for the state’s 182 constituency seats.

In the second phase, 93 assembly segments, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Gandhinagar constituencies, across 14 districts in the north and central Gujarat will go to polls on Monday.

Gujarat, which has been ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1995, will see a triangular fight between the ruling party, the Congress, and the new entrant the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been aggressively campaigning in the western state.

The second round of voting will start at 8 AM and end at 5 PM.

There are a total of 2.54 crore eligible voters, and the second round of voting will take place at 26,409 polling places. To ensure smooth polling, the Election Commission (EC) will deploy over 84,000 polling personnel and 29,000 presiding officers across 14 districts.

Maninagar, a BJP stronghold and the home district of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Ghatlodia and the state capital of Gandhinagar, are some of the seats that are anticipated to see the most intense competition on December 5.

Gujarat Assembly Elections 2022: EC urges voters to come out in ‘large numbers’ during phase II polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) appealed to the voters in Gujarat to come out in ‘large numbers’ during phase II of the state’s local assembly elections to ‘compensate’ for low voting in the first phase.

ECI made this announcement after it observed that, after the conclusion of the Gujarat assembly elections’ phase I, the state witnessed a relatively low average voter turnout of 63.31 per cent in 89 seats. This was lower than the 66.75 per cent recorded in phase I of the 2017 state elections with the same constituencies.

Sheyphali Sharan, DG Election Commission of India, in a Twitter post, said, “Urban apathy continues unabated from Shimla to Surat. ECI appeals to voters of Gujarat to come out in large numbers during the second phase to compensate for low voting in 1st phase”

Polling for the first phase in 19 districts of Saurashtra, Kutch and south Gujarat was held on December 1, 2022. The fate of 788 candidates was sealed in Electronic Voting Machines.

Fourteen constituencies recorded more than 70 per cent voting. Dediapada in Narmada district recorded the highest 82.71 per cent voting, followed by Kaprada in Valsad district which had a turnout of 79.57 per cent. Gandhidham’s seat in the Kutch district recorded the lowest turnout of 47.86 per cent.

District-wise, the tribal-dominated Narmada district recorded the highest average turnout of 78.24 per cent, followed by Tapi with 76.91 per cent. Navsari district recorded an average 71.06 per cent voting, the EC said.

Botad district recorded the lowest average voter turnout of 57.58 per cent. Amreli followed closely with 57.59 per cent turnout. Surat district recorded 62.27 per cent voting and Rajkot 60.45 per cent.

In 2017, the final voter turnout (for both phases of elections) was 68.41 per cent.

The second phase of 2022 elections for the remaining 93 seats with 833 candidates in the fray will be held on December 5, and votes will be counted on December 8.

A total of 26,269 ballot units, 25,430 control units and 25,430 VVPATs were used.

Mahesana Election 2022: Former Dy CM Nitin Patel’s turf set for a triangular contest

Gujarat’s Mehsana, which is one of the 182 Legislative Assembly constituencies of the state and is one of the seven Vidhan Sabha seats, is set for a triangular contest among Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. Voting will be held in two phases on 182 assembly seats in Gujarat.

Mehsana Assembly constituency’s polls are widely gaining people’s interest because of several reasons. One of the reasons is the absence of Former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, whose influence is believed in the Mehsana district. On the other hand, the AAP’s entry could be another reason as it is contesting elections in Gujarat for the first time.

In Patel’s absence in this election, BJP has given the ticket to Mukesh Patel in his place. On the other hand, Congress has named PK Patel as its candidate and the Aam Aadmi Party has placed its bets on the Patidar face.

Mehsana district, which is considered to be the centre of socio-economic and political activity of North Gujarat, is also famous because Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s village Badnagar comes in Mehsana district only. There are seven assembly seats in this Mehsana district.

The BJP, after the 2017 Patidar agitation, had suffered huge losses as Patidars, Thakors, Chaudharys and Patels decide the victory or defeat in the Mehsana district. Moreover, as per past elections, many veteran leaders had been seen trying their luck from the Mehsana assembly seat, the headquarters of the district.

BJP, which had won the Mehsana assembly seat in 1990, has mostly remained in the possession of the region. Nitin Patel, who was the first Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, in the 2012 and 2017’s assembly elections won this seat.

Following Patel’s absence, as per several media reports, many people had opined that BJP may be harmed in Mehsana due to Nitin Patel not contesting the election. Patel, in 2017 had beaten Congress’ Jivabhai Patel.

Patel’s recusal from the contest, along with former CM Vijay Rupani, has signalled that the BJP in the State wanted to turn the page on the last few years and usher in a new generation of leadership. However, in all such cases, it is easier said than done on the ground therefore when it came to selecting a candidate for Mehsana, Patel’s replacement Mukesh Patel was selected.

In the Mehsana assembly, around 23 per cent are Patidar voters, 16 per cent Thakor, 6 per cent Muslim, 11 per cent Dalit, 14 per cent in other backward classes (OBC), 4 per cent Kshatriya and 12.9 per cent in other caste people are likely to exercise their rights.

Rajkot West, Gujarat Election 2022: The Rajkot West assembly seat is a bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it has never lost an election from here since 1980. Even before that, the seat was with Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the predecessor of the BJP.

Many top leaders from the saffron party have represented this seat in the Gujarat Assembly. Among them are Narendra Modi, Vajubhai Vala, and Vijay Rupani. Modi won this in February 2002 in the by-election.

Vajubhai Vala, now Governor of Karnataka, held this seat from 1985 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2014. After Vala was appointed as Governor in 2014, Vijay Rupani contested from here and won the seat twice – in 2014 and 2017. Rupani served as the chief minister from August 2016 to September 2021. He succeeded Anandiben Patel.

In the 2017 election, Rupani secured 60.67 per cent votes against Congress’ Indranil Rajguru who could manage only 35.89 per cent votes. Rupani had defeated Rajguru by nearly 54,00 votes – higher than the margin recorded in 2012. In 2012, Rupani won this seat by 23, 740 margin. This time, Rupani is not contesting the assembly election, while Rajguru has been fielded by the Congress from Rajkot East.

Ahead of the election, Rupani said that he served as the chief minister for five years and now the responsibility should be given to new workers. He said he won’t contest the poll and will work to make a chosen candidate win.

This time, the BJP has fielded Darshita Shah from Rajkot West, who will be taking on Dinesh Joshi of AAP and Mansukh Kalariya of the Congress.

Rajkot West is an assembly segment of the Rajkot Lok Sabha constituency, where the BJP has been in power since 1989 except for one term (2009-2014). For BJP, Shivlal Vekaria won the Rajkot parliamentary seat in 1989 and 1991, and then Vallabhbhai Kathiria held this seat from 1996 to 2009. Since 2014, Mohanbhai Kundariya of the BJP has been representing the seat in the Lower House.

Rajkot West will vote in the first phase on December 1.

Ghatlodia Election 2022: It’s a battle of prestige for Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel

Ghatlodia Assembly Election 2022: BJP’s sitting chief minister Bhupendra Patel is contesting from the Ghatlodia assembly segment, which is part of the Ahmedabad district and falls under the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. Gandhinagar has been the bastion of the saffron party, which has retained this seat since 1989. BJP stalwarts like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Amit Shah have represented Gandhinagar in the Lok Sabha.

Patel, who was a surprise pick to replace Vijay Rupani as the chief minister just a year before the election, is up against Amee Yajnik of Congress and Vijay Patel of the AAP. Yajnik is a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. Dominated by Patidar and Rabari communities, Ghatlodia voted for the BJP in the previous election despite a massive agitation – against the government – led by Hardik Patel.

The Patidar reservation movement in 2015 was the biggest agitation that the BJP government had faced in its nearly three-decade rule in Gujarat. Then Chief Minister Anandiben Patel was the MLA from Ghatlodia. In the next election held in 2017, she vacated the seat for Bhupendra Patel, who won the election by almost the same vote share.

In 2012, Anandiben defeated Congress’ Ramesh Patel by over 1.10 lakh votes. She got 74.51 per cent vote share while Patel could manage only 21.31 per cent votes. In 2017, Bhupendra Patel defeated his Congress rival Shashikant Patel by a bigger margin. While the BJP leader got 175,652 votes with 72.65 per cent vote share, the Congress candidate secured 57,902 votes by 23.95 per cent vote share.

This was a humiliating defeat for the Congress by any measure as it could not capitalise on the anger and momentum created by the Patidar agitation. The protest was also against the then-sitting chief minister Anandiben Patel. But the BJP outmaneuvered the Congress by changing the candidate to beat anti-incumbency.

Considering the history and legacy of this assembly seat, Patel will have to win this election by an almost similar margin and vote share. So far, it looks like there is no major threat for him as Hardik Patel, who led the Patidar protest, is now campaigning for the BJP – and two challengers from the Congress and AAP are yet to create their base.

Ghatlodia will go to polls in Phase 2 on December 5.

Gujarat assembly polls: The campaigning for the first phase of elections in 89 of the total 182 seats in Gujarat came to an end on December 29. The first phase of elections will take place on December 1. The remaining 93 seats will be decided in a vote on December 5.

The Gujarat assembly elections will feature 1,621 candidates. A total of 788 candidates will run for the 89 seats up for election in Phase 1, including 70 women and 339 independents. Similarly, 833 candidates will compete for the 93 seats in Phase 2. In the second round, there are 69 female candidates and 285 independents.

Gujarat Assembly Elections 2022: The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday sounded the poll bugle for Gujarat – the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The commission announced the dates for assembly elections, which will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be held on December 1, while the second phase on December 5. The results will be announced on December 8.

Gujarat elections: Here’s all you need to know

Number of constituencies

Gujarat has 182 assembly seats out of these 13 are reserved for SCs and 27 for STs. The highest number of seats is in Central Gujarat (61), followed by Saurashtra-Kutch (54), South Gujarat (35) and North Gujarat (32). In the last poll, the BJP did well in South and Central Gujarat, while Congress gained space in the rest two regions.

Electorates and polling booths

The total number of electors as per electoral rolls is 4,91,17,308. Of these, 4,90,89,765 are general voters while 27,943 are service voters. This time, the commission will set up 51,782 polling booths, 3.29 per cent more than what was in the last election held in 2017.

Key parties in the fray

The fight is expected to be between the ruling BJP and the Congress. However, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) aggressive campaign is likely to make it a trilateral contest. The AAP’s claims that Congress could not defeat the BJP in the past 27 years and there is no visible sign that it will is gaining currency among the people. For BJP, which has been in power in the state for the last 27 years, the biggest challenge would be to quell anti-incumbency. Besides these three, five more parties are in the fray – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).

How parties fared in the last election

The BJP had won 99 seats, 15 less than what it had got in 2012. The Congress had bettered its tally to 77 seats, 16 more from the previous election when it could manage only 61 out of 182 seats. In the last election, the BJP secured 49.1 per cent votes while Congress had to settle with 41.14 per cent votes. Two seats had gone to BTP, one to NCP and three were independents.

Documents needed at the polling booths

For identification of voters at polling stations, voter will have to present their election photo identity card or any other i-card – approved by the EC – along with the photo voter slips. Voter can carry Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, driving license, MNREGA job card, bank and post office passbooks, health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of the Ministry of Labour, smart card issued by the Registrar General of India under the National Population Register, pension document with photograph, service identity cards with photograph issued to employees by governments – central, state, PSUs, Public Limited companies – and official identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs.
