Fallout’s Costume Designer on Creating Its Ghoulish Characters

Fallout’s a pretty good show, and one of the big reasons why is the ever-reliable Walton Goggins. As the Ghoul—or Cooper Howard, once upon a time—he’s a menace to Lucy and everyone else throughout the season, while being enjoyable to watch both in the irradiated present and the pre-nuclear past. Creating him and others like him took some time, partially because they are and aren’t like anything else you’ve seen before on TV.

Will the Fallout TV Series Radiate the Tone of the Video Games?

Talking to Polygon, associate costume designer Amy Westcot explained how the costuming team concepted different “ghoulness” stages, of which there are “so many different degrees.” In the games, ghouls can exist as an average person with the right meds, otherwise they become Feral and attack basically anything that moves. They’re that world’s zombie equivalent, just in two different flavors where one is “kind of on their way out” and considerably deadlier. But watching ghouls go from normal to Feral isn’t a pleasant experience, one the show’s creators clearly wanted to make as clear as possible.

For the show, keeping the ghouls in a mostly human state was “super important,” particularly as it pertains to their humanity. Westcott revealed the costuming department worked hard with the textile team to make sure they looked right for their age while still garnering sympathy from the audience. “These were people once, and that was important to remember—even the Feral ghouls,” she noted. “They were supposed to be in rags, but…you get some remnant that they were a person once, and I think that we all empathize with them as well.”

In the case of the Ghoul, Westcott said that he couldn’t help but be the least grotesque of the bunch we see. Throughout the season, we see him guzzle down those aforementioned meds, which enable him to “still [have] his wits about him” and stand out from the other ghouls. He’s not fully one way or the other, but it was vital to have him seem like a regular (albeit irradiated) person while also “at a stage of ghoulness, [he just] couldn’t be Feral.” With a second season in the cards, it may be that he ends up sliding closer into Feral territory.

8 Things We Liked, and 2 We Didn’t, About Fallout

Throughout its first season, Fallout tees up what seemingly are a bunch of mysteries that are either not connected at all or by the loosest of threads—why is the Ghoul so fascinated when he learns Lucy’s full name? What’s going on with dwellers from Vault 31? How did Moldaver make her way from the pre-war days to lead the New California Republic, and just what did she need from Wilzig the Enclave defector? What really happened to Lucy’s mom, and will she be able to save her dad? Will Maximus be able to make his way back to Lucy—and away from the Brotherhood once and for all?

All this smashes together in the finale (appropriately called “The Beginning”) to reveal that actually everything is much messier, more personal, and interconnected than anyone thought. As Lucy comes face to face with what was always her goal from the moment she left Vault 33, we and she alike get to learn, thanks to a flashback to Cooper’s perspective, that it was Vault-Tec itself, spearheading a conglomerate of multiple pro-war companies, that fired the first bombs that set off the apocalypse, ensuring their products would be used. Also, along the way, Vault-Tec froze all of its managers—from the lowest assistants to the highest bosses—to control the world that came after the fallout and ensure that capital remains in their own hands. And not only that, we’ve met a bunch of those Vault-Tec staffers throughout the season, like Betty, and of course, Hank himself—revealed as the assistant to Cooper’s wife, Henry, in pre-war times.

It does a lot to make clear the way the show views Fallout’s world, while once again putting all three of the main characters together, if not ideologically or geographically, in just how related to all this mess they each are.

Okay so maybe don’t hit Kyle McLachlan with the CG-deaging-ray but still, in spite of that, it all works!

Must-Watch Horror Movies In Recent Times

Even if the horror genre may not be the strength of the Indian cinema industry, there have been instances where filmmakers have created works of art that have withstood the test of time and continue to live on in viewers’ minds long after watching. So who says one cannot turn to Bollywood when looking for horror movies?

Stree (2018)

One of the most iconic Hindi movies in recent times, Stree with Shraddha Kapoor in the titular role made waves with their story.

Based on the well-known Indian folktale of an evil spirit that hunts men and kidnaps them at night, it follows Rajkummar Rao and his friends as they navigate the haunted town of Chanderi. The mystery behind the spirit is for you to watch and find out!

Tumbbad (2018)

A critically acclaimed Bollywood horror movie, Tumbbad is a must-watch. The movie examines what happens to a village when they break a long-standing taboo and go inside the tomb of a village deity. The film broke new ground when it comes to Bollywood horror, and does justice to the genre.

Pari (2018)

A supernatural horror film starring Anushka Sharma in the lead role it follows the journey of a man named Arnab. When he saves Ruksahana, who he finds trapped in a house under mysterious circumstances and frees her, things start to act up. A horror movie in its true sense, anyone watching is in for a spooky ride.

Ghoul (2018)

Though not a movie, this mini-series when watched at a stretch can feel like one. Based on an Arab folklore monster, it follows Radhika Apte a young interrogator as she quests for the truth at a military detention facility.

When a new prisoner at the detention facility displays unsettling behaviour, her mission becomes increasingly intriguing. Definitely, a must-watch that will have you hooked from start to finish.

Laxmii (2020)

Laxmii starring Akshay Kumar tells the story of Asif, a man grounded in science and reasoning who gets possessed by a transsexual spirit. When the vengeful spirit takes over Kumar’s body, a dark social secret is revealed.

However, the humorous punchlines, amusing responses and conversations, and sometimes comedic paranormal activity provide the right balance of fun. Laxmii is a must-watch for those of you see seeking a frightening movie that offers an engaging blend of scares and laughs, with an important social message.

Bulbbul (2020)

This supernatural thriller, may not exactly have the typical horror elements from jump scares to unrealistic ghosts, but it is full of mystery and folklore. This fable tells the story of Bulbbul an enigmatic woman, who is battling a traumatic past.

As supernatural murders of men plague her village, the connection between the two comes to light to deliver a relevant and important social message.

Ghost Stories (2020)

An unconventional horror film, that is divided into four segments, Ghost stories are full of recognisable horror film tropes. When four award-winning directors – Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar come together the end result deserves at least a watch. Full of mind-bending moments, Ghost stories definitely make the cut.

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship (2020)

This horror-thriller film follows Vicky Kaushal, who s tasked with solving the mystery of the unexplained stranding of the Sea Bird, an abandoned and derelict ship, on Mumbai’s coastline.

However, when he realises that there may be more truth to the ominous tales about the ship, things start to act up taking you on a journey of all things spooky. With brilliant acting by Vicky Kaushal and a decent storyline- the movie makes for an engaging watch.

Roohi (2021)

Rajkummar Rao returned with another horror-comedy titled Roohi, which promises the right balance of shivers and laughs. Roohi follows Rao and Varun Sharma’s characters Bhawra and Kattani’s shenanigans as they move about their hometown of Bagadpur. When they realise one of the girls is possessed by an evil spirit, laughter and panic break out taking the audience on a wild spook-filled journey.

Bhoot Police (2021)

If you’re too scared to watch a horror film, but want to venture into the genre, what’s a better way than a horror-comedy that has more smiles than spooks? Bhoot Police follows ghost-busting brothers Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor who are assigned a seemingly ordinary case of hunting down spirits in a village. However, when they realise this case is much beyond the ordinary, chaos ensues. A journey of fits and giggles, the movie has a small share of scary moments.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)

A sequel to the original iconic horror-comedy-thriller with the same name, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is an exciting watch. With me we’re elements of thrill, the movie follows Kartik Aryan and Kiara Advani who cross paths and visit an abandoned, haunted haveli. With ghostly encounters, well-helmed comedy and great acting from the ensemble cast, the film comes pretty close to the original which almost attained cult status. A must-watch for all horror-comedy lovers.

Phone Booth (2022)

Adding to the list of horror-comedy movies, are Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khattar and Siddhant Chaturvedi starrer Phone Booth. It is full of madcap moments, with characters rooted in horror movies. In totality, it’s wacky, wild and weird, and has everything you need to have a good time.

Bhediya (2022)

Finishing off the list is Bhediya– a movie that is releasing soon! Starring Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan, the movie is the third installment of Dinesh Vijan’s horror universe which also consists of Roohi and Stree. Varun Dhawan plays a man who transforms into a shape-shifting werewolf, and the trailer promises some good twists and turns. If you’re looking to get the horror experience on the big screen, bookmark Bhediya’s release date to get the complete experience!

Horror movies are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they come with so much variety that it demands you to try them. Whether you’re more of a horror-comedy, giggles and ghosts kind of person or a full-blown horror with jump-scares individual, there’s something for everyone!
