Camping Coastlines: A First Timer’s Beach Camping Realizations

    [ad_1]

To cap off March, my wife and I went on a beach camping trip at Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort—our first time roughing it instead of opting for a proper room or a nipa hut. This was partly because we wanted to go to the beach and partly because we wanted to get our money’s worth out of the tent we bought late last year. Great way to hit two birds with one stone, right? If you’re looking to go camping for the first time as well, here are some tips and realizations from our sandy overnight escapade.

Depending on where you are going, you won’t need to go all-in with camping equipment

Due to excitement, I spent a few weeks before the camping trip going on online shopping platforms and adding every camping related item I could find into my cart. Mini charcoal grills, extremely compact butane stoves, folding tables and chairs, hammocks, tarpaulin buckets, stackable camping cookware and utensils, fairy lights, power stations, and portable fans. You name it, it was in my cart. Thankfully, my wife knocked some sense into me with some pretty good arguments. First, I’m going to have to carry most of what we bring—equipment and food—into the campsite. Second, it’s only going to be an overnight trip, so most of these items won’t even see much use. Third, I’m going to have to stow these into and out of the car, and into and out of our third-floor apartment up three flights of stairs. Fourth and last, we will need to find long-term storage for these items in our apartment. And just like that, the desire to buy more was gone.

True enough, upon arriving at the campsite and pitching our tent, I realized I did not really need all those equipment. A tent, two chairs, a small folding table, a regular-sized butane stove, two rechargeable flash lights, two small rechargeable fans, and a self-inflating mattress—these were the things we already had and were all the camping things we really needed on the trip. For cookware and utensils, we brought what we already owned. Stilts had the rest of the things we needed, including grills and mood lighting.

Where and when you pitch your tent matters

Tree cover is a precious resource when beach camping. Having some shade can be the difference between your tent feeling warm and feeling like an oven. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you set up camp somewhere where you can chill away from direct sunlight. It’s also important to point out that the depth of the sand and the substrate should also be taken into account. In our case, although we were able to pick a shaded area for our camp, our tent stakes were barely long enough to reach the soil underneath the sand. This resulted in a longer setup time as strong gusts of winds from the sea were threatening to blow our tent away.

Additionally, consider pitching your tent earlier in the morning or later on in the day. Trying to set up a tent as huge as ours in the middle of the day was not a fun experience. In fact, I think I got sunburned more from pitching and taking down the tent than actually being in the water. Pitching your tent earlier on is also better as you will have first dibs on the optimal camp site and view.

Beach cooking and eating hits different

Pork chops, steaks, and veggies just hit different after a long day of hauling things, setting up camp, and frolicking in the water, especially if you grill them over charcoal. If it’s your first time trying to get charcoal going for a grill, then here are some tips. Take some brown paper bags and cardboard with you to serve as kindling; crumple these into a cone; and then in your grill, stack your charcoal around this cone, leaving just a tiny gap where you can light the kindling on fire. Once the kindling seems about to run out, begin gently fanning your charcoal mound to get the embers going. Your good to go once you see most of the charcoal smoldering on their own. Otherwise, feed more kindling and keep fanning the flames as necessary.

To keep food fresh until it is time to cook, I recommend investing in a good quality ice chest. Make sure to fully freeze your meats beforehand as well. On the day of your trip, pre-cool the chest with ice or cold water for a few minutes, dump any liquids out, and then transfer your meats from the freezer to the chest. Make sure to put in plenty of ice cubes as well to keep temperatures as low as possible for as long as possible. You can also freeze your drinks and keep it cool all throughout the day using this method.

    Keep your tech minimal

I originally planned on bringing a Macbook onto the beach for when I wanted to chill while binge-watching online videos. I then figured that an iPad would suffice as an entertainment device since I won’t be needing to type anything anyway. Ultimately, I decided that the vivo V30 Pro review unit we had was plenty big and plenty loud for multimedia viewing, as well as doubling as a potent camera. I also brought along a power bank to keep our fans, lights, and phones topped up. Not only will being a tech minimalist mean less things that need to be hauled into and out of the beach, but also less things you’ll have to worry about being stolen when you’re not within eyesight of your tent.

Writing this a few days after our trip made me miss the whole experience. The serenity, cool sea breeze, and far-from-work atmosphere was a much needed respite from the hustles and bustles of the metro. It’s an experience I would recommend to anyone, especially those on the fence if camping is right for them. If yours truly—a perennial office worker who loves sleep, comfort, and convenience—can find enjoyment in camping along a coastline, then most likely, you will too.

  • Test Drive: Ford Territory Titanium X

Test Drive: Ford Territory Titanium X

    [ad_1]

A year after its launch, the Ford Territory Titanium X continues to be a serious contender in the compact crossover SUV segment. Here’s our take on this ‘techie’ vehicle.

    Design 4.5/5

The front fascia of the Ford Territory Titanium X commands attention with its hexagonal grille. Flanked by sleek LED headlights, its daytime running lights (DRLs) create a striking signature. The substantial bumper adds ruggedness without compromising elegance.

Moving to the side profile, character lines flow gracefully, emphasizing the sleek silhouette. Prominent wheel arches and black cladding contribute to its robust appearance, with 19-inch alloy wheels completing the look. The rear design is clean and uncluttered, with LED taillights wrapping around the corners and a subtle roof spoiler adding a sporty touch.

Stepping inside the cabin reveals an interior with a tasteful mix of soft-touch materials and leather, creating a premium feel beyond what’s expected in this segment and price range. Storage options are plentiful, with cubbies and cup holders scattered throughout the cabin, perfect for stowing away drinks, phones, and other essentials. For longer trips, a hidden compartment under the cargo floor provides additional storage space.

    Equipment: 4.5/5

Ford hasn’t skimped on equipping the Territory Titanium X — in my opinion, surpassing category standards. It comes with a panoramic sunroof, a fully digital instrument cluster that can be customized to display various driving information, and a large touchscreen infotainment system. The system is user-friendly and responsive, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for generally seamless smartphone integration, although I experienced occasional glitches with Apple CarPlay dropping the connection when moving between cell sites or in areas with poor signals.

The Territory Titanium X boasts a number of thoughtful convenience features. I particularly appreciate the built-in air anion generator with PM2.5 monitoring, which offers the health benefits of reducing allergens and pollutants, neutralizing odor, and improving alertness. The power liftgate for hands-free access to the trunk is also a great add-on.

Safety is obviously a top priority for Ford, and the Territory Titanium X is well-equipped in that department with six airbags, anti-lock brakes with traction control, hill launch assist and rollover mitigation, and a security alarm system, among others. An advanced driver-assist technology suite comes standard, including a high-definition 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, tire pressure monitoring, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and collision mitigation system. These features can help prevent accidents and give you peace of mind on the road.

    User Experience: 4/5

Climbing into the Territory Titanium X reveals a spacious and comfortable cabin. The front seats offer ample support and adjustability, perfect for long drives. The driver’s seat even comes with 10-way power adjustments and lumbar support for added comfort. Both front driver and passenger seats are ventilated, keeping you cool and dry in the sweltering summer heat.

On the road, the Territory Titanium X delivers a smooth and quiet ride. The cabin is well-insulated from road noise and wind, making for a peaceful driving experience. The 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged engine provides sufficient power for daily commutes and highway cruising. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is generally smooth on long stretches but can be hesitant at low speeds and in stop-and-go traffic. To manage expectations, it is best to remember that the Territory Titanium X seems to prioritize a comfortable and composed ride over responsiveness and sporty handling.

The Territory Titanium X also boasts several features that enhance the user experience. The available ambient lighting allows you to personalize the cabin atmosphere, while the dual-zone climate control ensures everyone stays comfortable regardless of their temperature preferences. The rear seats also come with their own USB charging ports, keeping devices powered up for long journeys.

    Value: 4/5

The 2024 Ford Territory Titanium X is competitively priced at PHP1,599,000, offering a strong value proposition. I did not have sufficient time with the vehicle to adequately assess fuel efficiency, which some claim is not the Territory’s strongest suit, but its feature-rich interior, comfortable ride, comprehensive safety package, and overall modern design make it a compelling choice for families and city dwellers.

  • Cisco Hypershield reimagines security for data centers and clouds in era of AI

Cisco Hypershield reimagines security for data centers and clouds in era of AI

    [ad_1]

Cisco, the leader in security and networking, has unveiled a radically new approach to securing data centers and clouds in response to the increasing demands the AI revolution has put on IT infrastructure. Cisco is rearchitecting how we harness and protect AI and other modern workloads with industry-first, Cisco Hypershield. With this unprecedented innovation, Cisco is tipping the scales in favor of defenders, building on its recent announcements to accelerate AI infrastructure with Cisco’s ethernet switching, silicon, and compute portfolio.

Cisco Hypershield protects applications, devices, and data across public and private data centers, clouds, and physical locations — anywhere customers need it. Designed and built with AI in mind from the start, Hypershield enables organizations to achieve security outcomes beyond what has been possible with humans alone.

“Cisco Hypershield is one of the most significant security innovations in our history,” said Chuck Robbins, Cisco chair and CEO. “With our data advantage and strength in security, infrastructure, and observability platforms, Cisco is uniquely positioned to help our customers harness the power of AI.”

Hypershield is a revolutionary new security architecture. It’s built with technology originally developed for hyperscale public clouds and is now available for enterprise IT teams of all sizes. More a fabric than a fence, Hypershield enables security enforcement to be placed everywhere it needs to be. Every application service in the data center. Every Kubernetes cluster in the public cloud. Every container and virtual machine (VM). It can even turn every network port into a high-performance security enforcement point, bringing completely new security capabilities not just to clouds, but to the data center, on a factory floor, or a hospital imaging room. This new technology blocks application exploits in minutes and stops lateral movement in its tracks.

“AI has the potential to empower the world’s 8 billion people to have the same impact as 80 billion. With this abundance, we must reimagine the role of the data center – how data centers are connected, secured, operated and scaled,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager for Security and Collaboration at Cisco. “The power of Cisco Hypershield is that it can put security anywhere you need it – in software, in a server, or in the future, even in a network switch. When you have a distributed system that could include hundreds of thousands of enforcement points, simplified management is mission critical. And we need to be orders-of-magnitude more autonomous, at an orders-of-magnitude lower cost.”

Security enforcement with Hypershield happens at three different layers: in software, in virtual machines, and in network and compute servers and appliances, leveraging the same powerful hardware accelerators that are used extensively in high-performance computing and hyperscale public clouds.

Hypershield was built on three key pillars:

    • AI-Native: Built and designed from the start to be autonomous and predictive, Hypershield manages itself once it earns trust, making a hyper-distributed approach at scale possible.
    • Cloud-Native: Hypershield is built on open source eBPF, the default mechanism for connecting and protecting cloud-native workloads in the hyperscale cloud. Cisco acquired the leading provider of eBPF for enterprises, Isovalent, earlier this month.
    • Hyper-Distributed: Cisco is completely reimagining how traditional network security works by embedding advanced security controls into servers and the network fabric itself. Hypershield spans all clouds and leverages hardware acceleration like Data Processing Units (DPU) to analyze and respond to anomalies in application and network behavior. It shifts security closer to the workloads that need protection.

Cisco, with its industry-leading expertise in networking, security, and extensive partner ecosystem, together with NVIDIA, is committed to building and optimizing AI-native security solutions to protect and scale the data centers of tomorrow. This collaboration includes leveraging the NVIDIA Morpheus cybersecurity AI framework for accelerated network anomaly detection, as well as NVIDIA NIM microservices for powering custom security AI assistants for the enterprise. NVIDIA’s class of converged accelerators combine the power of GPU and DPU computing to augment Cisco Hypershield with robust security from cloud to edge.

“Enterprises across all industries are seeking the security that can protect them against ever expanding cyber threats,” said Kevin Deierling, senior vice president of Networking at NVIDIA. “Together, Cisco and NVIDIA are leveraging the power of AI to deliver powerful, incredibly secure data center infrastructure that will enable enterprises to transform their businesses and benefit customers everywhere.”

As a revolutionary new security architecture, Hypershield is solving three key customer challenges in defending against today’s sophisticated threat landscape:

    • Distributed Exploit Protection: Attackers are adept at weaponizing newly published vulnerabilities faster than defenders can patch. With defenders seeing nearly 100 new vulnerabilities every day, according to Cisco Talos Threat Intelligence, this can lead to catastrophic results. Hypershield delivers protection in minutes by automatically testing and deploying compensating controls into the distributed fabric of enforcement points.
    • Autonomous Segmentation: Once an attacker is in the network, segmentation is key to stopping their lateral movement. Hypershield perpetually observes, auto-reasons and re-evaluates existing policies to autonomously segment the network, solving this in large and complex environments.
    • Self-qualifying Upgrades: Hypershield automates the incredibly laborious and time-consuming process of testing and deploying upgrades once they are ready, leveraging a dual data plane. This completely new software architecture allows software upgrades and policy changes to be placed in a digital twin that tests updates using the customer’s unique combination of traffic, policies and features, then applying those updates with zero downtime.

Built into the Security Cloud, Cisco’s unified, AI-driven, cross-domain security platform, Cisco Hypershield is expected to be Generally Available in August 2024. With Cisco’s recent acquisition of Splunk, customers will gain unparalleled visibility and insights across their entire digital footprint for unprecedented security protection.

“AI is not just a force for good but also a tool used for nefarious purposes, allowing hackers to reverse engineer patches and create exploits in record time. Cisco looks to address an AI enabled problem with an AI solution as Cisco Hypershield aims to tip the scales back in favor of the defender by shielding new vulnerabilities against exploit in minutes – rather than the days, weeks or even months as we wait for patches to actually get deployed,” said Frank Dickson, group vice president, Security & Trust at IDC. “With the number of vulnerabilities ever increasing and the time for attackers to exploit them at scale ever decreasing, it’s clear that patching alone can’t keep up. Tools like Hypershield are necessary to combat an increasingly clever malicious cyber adversary.”

“Cisco Hypershield takes aim at the complex security challenges of modern, AI-scale data centers. Cisco’s vision of a self-managing fabric that seamlessly integrates from the network to the endpoint will help redefine what’s possible for security at scale,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst of ZK Research. “For instance, this level of visibility and control across a hyper-distributed environment prevents lateral movement of attackers, enabled through a unique approach to segmentation that’s autonomous and highly effective. While this may seem fantastical, the time is right given recent AI advances combined with the maturity of cloud-native technologies like eBPF.”

“At AHEAD we believe cybersecurity should be integrated into everything we do. Bolted-on security is more expensive and less effective,” said Steven Aiello, field chief information security officer at AHEAD. “Cisco Hypershield ensures that cyber protections are included into the fabric of the enterprise. Distributed Exploit Protection will be a massive win for blue teams – legacy synthetic patching was primarily limited to edge devices, allowing lateral movement once an attacker breached the perimeter. It’s a great day for cyber-defenders!”

  • FEU targets 50% renewable energy, more sustainable operations by 2028

FEU targets 50% renewable energy, more sustainable operations by 2028

    [ad_1]

Committed to its mission of promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, Far Eastern University (FEU) aspires to implement more sustainable operations, including the use of 50% renewable energy by 2028.

As the threat of environmental degradation and climate change continues to loom not just in the country but also globally, FEU believes that universities are in a special position to help address this crisis.

In a recent seminar on “Braving New Heights for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” FEU president Juan Miguel Montinola emphasized the importance of raising awareness about existing environmental issues and how FEU, as a university, believes in the effectiveness of the United Nations’ SDGs as a framework for tackling these issues.

“It’s not just sustainability alone, but sustainability with a purpose,” said Montinola. “We are talking about the livability of our planet in the present and in the future, and reflecting on this is something that the university must instill upon the youth.”

    Sustainable operations

Montinola also shared how the university’s drive toward sustainability started more than a decade ago.

One of these initiatives is the strategic investment in a district cooling chilled water plant system, which currently supplies 11 out of 12 campus buildings. This project encourages responsible consumption and climate action in adherence to SDGs 12 and 13.

Other sustainable operations include a central filtration plant for clean water (SDG 6), the use of a Building Management System in the FEUture Building (SDG 12), and compliance with proper waste management regulations and rainwater harvesting, resulting in substantial cost savings for the university.

With these interventions, the university recorded a 6.99% reduction in power consumption in 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic face-to-face period in 2019. FEU also recorded a significant reduction in carbon emissions, which was found to be equivalent to the sequestration of 17,074 mature trees.

Moreover, FEU boasts of having the first academic building in the country to receive an Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification.

    Centennial year

As FEU approaches its 100th anniversary in 2028, its pursuit of sustainability remains on the agenda of its five-year aspiration plan.

Currently, FEU is powered by 25% renewable energy, with a goal to reach 50% by 2028, inclusive of the solar energy projects to add 369KW in the Marikina and Silang campuses.

Expanding its program offerings to accommodate the increasing demand for sustainability-related careers is also one of the university’s strategic targets in the next few years.

With these initiatives, FEU affirms its commitment to help build a more livable and sustainable planet for the next generation.

  • Elevating holistic wellness through optimal liver health

Elevating holistic wellness through optimal liver health

    [ad_1]

The celebration of World Liver Day on April 19 is a global initiative that aims to promote proactive measures for liver health, and raise awareness for liver-related conditions that often go unnoticed.

Did you know your liver is a multitasking champion? This largest organ in your body filters blood, absorbs nutrients, removes toxic substances from the body, makes protein building blocks for your cells, and acts as your body’s vitamin and mineral bank. However, despite its ability to keep the body functioning properly, liver disease quietly claims thousands of lives each year in the Philippines alone.

Liver disease refers to any condition that affects the liver’s structure or function, which can develop into four stages: Hepatitis, Fibrosis, Cirrhosis, and ultimately, Liver failure. According to The Global State of Liver Health 2022 Report, liver disease complications resulted in a death rate of 2.65%, with an estimated 16,500 fatalities in the Philippines — a stark reality we cannot overlook. While alcohol is a major culprit, habits like regularly consuming fatty foods, sedentary routines, unhealthy diets, and relying on certain medications for a prolonged time also lead to liver problems.

The Hepatology Society of the Philippines (HSP) states that the risk is especially high for those who are overweight, diabetic, or suffer from hypertension, making over 18 million Filipinos vulnerable to or already struggling with fatty liver disease. However, a surprising number of 11.9% of Filipinos also have the disease despite not being overweight.

Experts emphasize that, alongside necessary tests, adopting healthy eating habits, making lifestyle changes, and considering the potential benefits of supplements can significantly contribute to tackling this growing problem.

    Protecting the liver holistically

LAC (Leader in Antioxidative Control™), the leading health and wellness supplement retailer in the Philippines, supports a proactive approach to liver health through LAC Activated Liver Protector™, a capsule supplement containing a blend of Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbs such as Hawthorn Fruit, Oriental Waterplantain Rhizome, and Largehead Atractylodes Rhizome that can prevent and relieve fatty liver, promote healthy liver function and lower bad blood lipid levels.

“At LAC, our mission has always been to empower individuals on their lifelong wellness journeys—this commitment extends to liver health. Especially with the evolving lifestyles of Filipinos marked by shifts in dietary habits, increased stress, and higher exposure to toxins, maintaining optimal liver health has become imperative to counteract modern health challenges and sustain holistic well-being,” Evelyn Teo, chief of marketing at LAC Global, explains.

Recognizing the liver’s pivotal role as the body’s detoxification powerhouse, LAC understands the importance of protecting, nourishing, and aiding detoxification for holistic wellness. This led LAC to develop LAC Activated Liver Protector™, a potent supplement designed to support optimal liver function. With its blend of herbs that have been used for centuries, the brand is bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and modern solutions–offering a convenient and effective approach to liver health all within one capsule.

Filipinos can take charge of not just their liver health but also their overall well-being through informed choices and high-quality supplements. As a champion of holistic wellness, LAC empowers individuals by providing a comprehensive range of supplements tailored to meet daily health needs at every life stage while promoting a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

  • Thinking of starting a business? Check out these tips from startup trailblazers

Thinking of starting a business? Check out these tips from startup trailblazers

    [ad_1]

Starting a business venture is a rewarding journey, but it is not without its challenges.

From raising funds to scaling operations efficiently to navigating market competition — the list of obstacles a startup faces is endless. Fortunately, starting a business in 2024 may not be as daunting as it was a decade ago when the Philippine startup ecosystem was young, and startups lacked support.

This was the key takeaway in a panel discussion organized by PayMongo, a Philippine-based digital financial services solutions provider, as part of the BUILD Startup Festival held recently at Six/NEO in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The event was moderated by PayMongo CEO Jojo Malolos, with PayMongo co-founder and chairperson Luis Sia, Growsari CEO and co-founder Ed Rollan,  Great Deals E-Commerce Corporation founder and CEO Steve Sy, and managing partner of Foxmont Capital Partners Franco Varona serving as panelists.

To grow the Philippine digital economy by helping aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs survive the ever-growing startup ecosystem, here are the top 4 tips shared by the panelists during the event:

    1. Know how much time it takes to build your business and stick it out.

This is the advice that Sia, who co-founded PayMongo at the age of 23, would give to his younger self. A startup’s journey to success is a long and bumpy road; hence, founders need to be patient when dealing with obstacles that are bound to come along. Sia encouraged entrepreneurs to have the persistence to see through these roadblocks and turn them into opportunities for success.

“A lot of great problems are solved over a long time,” he added.

    2. Choose what you invest in wisely to generate more returns in the long run.

Rollan, coming from his experience with Growsari, explained the importance of understanding your investments, whether in warehousing, logistics, or staff hiring. He further expounds that startups, especially in their early stages, will always be bound with questions and challenges, but knowing which to focus on and your expertise as an owner will be vital to making your business thrive.

“Our business mindset is always, if I do this on my own, I should be the best person to do this in the industry otherwise, it’s better that someone else do it,” Rollan stressed.

    3. Know when to grow and scale your business.

Growing and scaling your business are two different matters but both are important in business development, Sy, who steers the business direction of Great Deals E-Commerce Corporation, highlighted. Growing a business is when revenue increases as a result of expanding the organization through new hires, investing in new equipment, and so on. Meanwhile, scaling is when businesses manage their existing resources to efficiently sustain growth. Understanding the difference between these two concepts can help founders determine what they need to raise funds for and get to the next level.

“When you focus too much on growth, you tend to overlook important steps to be able to scale, so it’s important to know the right processes for your business to grow and then eventually be able to scale,” Sy underscored.

    4. Before you gain and grow, think rationally about whether you need another investor.

Varona, who engaged a number of entrepreneurs at Foxmont Capital Partners, emphasized that as business owners, you need to have a reality check and ensure that you have a specific intention to raise capital rather than for vanity or increasing your business’ worth.

“Raising money should always be accompanied by very specific reasons, like growing or scaling,” he said.

Aside from these valuable tips, the trailblazers also highlighted the importance of establishing support systems such as mentorships to ensure a productive and encouraging environment for the development of local startups.

“The evolution of the Philippine startup ecosystem over the years has unlocked tremendous opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Support systems and mentorship programs have been critical components in helping these businesses succeed, especially at the early stages,” Malolos said, “hopefully, through events like BUILD, we can continue to foster collaboration and innovation, driving the continued growth of the startup community,” he added.

BUILD, organized by Esquire Philippines and Sinigang Valley Association with support by PayMongo this year, is an annual one-day event convening startup founders, executives, investors, incubators, and government regulators, showcasing the Philippines’ thriving startup networks. This year’s festival concluded with a strong call for entrepreneurship and innovation, encouraging Filipinos to continue solving old problems with new takes through their startups.

PayMongo has recently shifted into a digital financial services provider from an online payments processing company to drive the Philippine digital economic growth by transforming business owners into digital Filipino entrepreneurs.

  • CCAP sets the stage for Contact Islands 2024; reaffirms confidence in AI integration

CCAP sets the stage for Contact Islands 2024; reaffirms confidence in AI integration

    [ad_1]

The country’s contact center and business process sector remain steadfast in upholding its position that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will bring about encouraging benefits and opportunities to its stakeholders. The Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) continues to reiterate that generative AI generates a positive impact not just on contact center firms but also on the entire Information Technology and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) industry.

Thus, CCAP is set to facilitate further discussions about the influence of AI and other significant issues on local call center operations. The 145-member organization is inviting key leaders and representatives from contact center and business process sector firms, local and national government, the academe, thought leaders, and customer experience officers to the Contact Islands 2024, happening from July 24 to 26, at the Fili Hotel Nustar Cebu in Cebu City.

The annual sectoral conference sets the stage for pivotal discussions about pressing concerns affecting the contact center and business process management sector as AI continues to alter the landscape amid a dynamic global economy and an evolving geopolitical climate.

Contact Islands 2024 is designed to bring about an unparalleled platform for showcasing innovations, highlighting best practices, and moderating dialogues as member companies unite in taking the path towards realizing the IT-BPM industry’s 2028 roadmap.

    Continuously growing sector

Based on data from global research firm Everest Group, the sector posted an annual revenue of USD29.5 billion in 2023. That accounts for almost 83% of the entire IT-BPM industry revenue of USD35.5 billion.

The Philippine IT-BPM industry has set an annual revenue target of USD59 billion by the year 2028. The Contact Center Industry is expected to account for about 83% of that amount, or around USD49 billion.

“We firmly assert that AI will continue to help make our industry more resilient and generate more revenue, contradicting fears of some concerned parties,” says CCAP president Mickey Ocampo. “People may not be fully aware, but AI has already been widely used through the chatbots we encounter online and even through the mobile features and applications we use daily. That usefulness can further strengthen our industry.”

Ocampo reiterates that AI could logically boost productivity in the workplace by enabling contact center agents to focus on more important and complex transactions, which could ultimately make the overall experience much better—for agents and customers alike.

In the past several months, several legislators have called on the national government to regulate or even prevent the integration of AI into the IT-BPM industry. Those include Senators Imee Marcos and Risa Hontiveros— both coming from two opposing political inclinations—who think AI might eliminate jobs.

“Just like how we overcame data privacy challenges years ago, CCAP member companies are continuously re-skilling and upskilling our agents to update and upgrade them to the constantly changing demand of our clients and technology.” AI itself will create more jobs related to the engineering, maintenance, and upgrade of AI applications.

Employment in the local contact center sector grew 9.4% year-on-year in 2023. That figure exceeded the overall growth rate of the IT-BPM industry of 8.6%.  About 1.51 million contact center agents were employed in 2023, accounting for 89% of the entire IT-BPM employment of 1.70 million full-time employees (FTEs).

For Contact Islands 2024 inquiries, contact CCAP’s Secretariat Office at +63 2 8843 0603. Visit the conference’s website at https://ccap.ph/event/contact-islands/.

  • Fujifilm PH supports the campaign to end TB

Fujifilm PH supports the campaign to end TB

    [ad_1]

Fujifilm Philippines, a global leader in imaging and healthcare technology, has expressed support for the Department of Health (DOH) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in their campaign to end TB (tuberculosis) in the country. 2022 data from the DOH show that around 106 Filipinos die every day from TB, a severe lung infection caused by bacteria.

Fujifilm Philippines is dedicated to the fight to end TB by introducing cutting-edge technologies and innovations. One of the critical contributions Fujifilm has made is providing FDR Xair, a portable X-ray system. This innovative device plays a crucial role in early TB detection by enabling healthcare professionals to conduct rapid and accurate screenings in diverse settings. By deploying portable X-ray systems in areas across the country, Fujifilm is helping bridge healthcare access gaps and improve diagnostic capabilities.

The FDR Xair, well-known for its portability and high image quality, plays a pivotal role in enhancing TB screening efforts, particularly in remote and underserved communities where access to healthcare infrastructure is limited. The FDR Xair, with its portable design and advanced imaging technology, revolutionizes TB screening in remote areas by providing reliable performance, ease of use, and data-driven approaches to TB control.

Fujifilm’s innovative solutions align with the efforts of USAID’s TB Innovations and Health Systems Strengthening project, implemented by FHI 360, to reach, cure, and prevent TB in the country using a whole-of-government approach.

Fujifilm Philippines conducted its first Medical Mission and TB screening using its x-ray systems (FDR nano and FDR Go PLUS) in Majayjay Laguna in 2023. The company plans to continue this program annually and utilize FDR Xair. By working closely with affected communities, local healthcare providers, and grassroots organizations, the company ensures that TB interventions are culturally sensitive, equitable, and sustainable.

In light of the global challenge posed by TB, Fujifilm recognizes the necessity of a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach. The company stands in solidarity with governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to tackle TB head-on, with the shared goal of building a healthier, TB-free future.

Fujifilm Philippines recognizes the urgent need to enhance TB detection capabilities as cases of this infectious disease continue to surge across the country, according to the DOH. As of December 31, 2023, DOH recorded over 600,000 cases of TB, or 549 cases per 100,000 people. This figure is higher than that of 2022, with 439 cases per 100,000 people. Despite its lethality, TB can be cured through free medication provided at TB DOTS clinics nationwide, where patients undergo a six-month treatment regimen without interruption.

  • Epson PH ‘Adopt-A-School’ program supports MM elementary schools with innovative technology to enhance learning

Epson PH ‘Adopt-A-School’ program supports MM elementary schools with innovative technology to enhance learning

    [ad_1]

Global technology leader Epson has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education (DepEd), represented by Oranbo Elementary School and Demetrio Tuazon Elementary School, under the ‘Adopt A School’ Program. The public-private partnership aims to address the gaps in education by providing support through necessary resources, equipment, and learning materials to public schools.

With the rapid development of technology, it is essential to incorporate it into the classroom to provide students with the best possible learning experience. Epson Philippines recognizes this need and has provided the two schools selected by DepEd with state-of-the-art projectors, printers enabled by Epson’s heat-free technology, and compact scanners.

“We believe that technology plays a crucial role in shaping the future of education, and we are committed to providing sustainable and innovative solutions that will help students learn better,” said Masako Kusama, president and director of Epson Philippines.

The ‘Adopt-A-School’ program signing ceremony was held at Epson Philippines’ headquarters in Pasig, attended by Masako Kusama from Epson Philippines, Director Margarita Ballesteros of the DepEd-Partnerships Service-Adopt a School Program Secretariat, School Head Shirley Alambra from Demetrio Tuazon Elementary School, and School Head Diosdado Manubag from Oranbo Elementary School.

“We are extremely grateful for this partnership with Epson Philippines, and we believe that the integration of technology in our classrooms will significantly benefit our students,” said Manubag. “Their generous sponsorship will transform the way we teach and inspire our students to learn more effectively.”

“The partnership with Epson Philippines is a significant step towards achieving our goal of providing quality education to Filipino children,” shared Alambra. “We are excited to see how this technology will enhance the learning experience of our students and improve the quality of education we provide.”

Both Epson and DepEd believe that by leveraging technology as a crucial tool in both teaching and learning, educators and students alike are empowered with access to resources and opportunities previously beyond their reach.

“As technology continues to evolve, it is essential to ensure that students have access to the latest tools and resources to help them succeed in their academic pursuits. The integration of technology in education has proven to be effective in enhancing student engagement, improving learning outcomes, and preparing them for the demands of the modern workforce,” stated Director Ballesteros, who served as a witness during the MOA signing. “We hope to continue working with Epson Philippines to further the integration of technology into our schools, ultimately improving our education system.”

The ‘Adopt A School’ partnership with DepEd is not the first time Epson Philippines has contributed to the advancement of education in the country. The two organizations previously collaborated in a multi-year sponsorship project called the Epson’s Gift of Brightness program, which equipped deserving, underprivileged schools in the country with Epson innovations such as printers, projectors, scanners, label printers, document cameras, and a supply of inks and cartridges. DepEd assisted in selecting several beneficiary schools for the program.

Through these initiatives, Epson Philippines has demonstrated its commitment to making a positive impact on society and contributing to the development of the next generation.

“Our partnership with DepEd is just one of the many initiatives we have undertaken to support education in the country. We remain committed to providing innovative solutions that will help students learn better and prepare them for the future,” concluded Kusama.

  • JBL Soundgear Sense review

    JBL Soundgear Sense review

    [ad_1]

Instead of the usual in-ear or over-ear designs, JBL describes the Soundgear Sense as wireless open-ear headphones. Although reminiscent of the bulky headsets with ear hooks that were popular in the early days of wireless audio, it earned a 2023 Red Dot Design Award for its use of air conduction technology to deliver sound without blocking the ears. How does it perform in real life?

    DESIGN – 3.5 / 5

For those of us who remember, the Soundgear Sense earpieces have a retro feel which, with their ear hooks and bulkier dimensions, resemble the Bluetooth earphones of the early to mid-2000s. Despite the dimensions of the oval plastic body, they are surprisingly lightweight at 13.1g each, making them easy to wear for extended use. The ear hooks are adjustable to fit various head shapes and sizes, ensuring a secure fit. A detachable neckband provides additional security and stability. This focus on comfort is evident in the way the Soundgear Sense feels during use.

Still, the bulkier dimensions and open-ear format might not appeal to everyone. I personally have mixed feelings about the Soundgear Sense: While I appreciate its lightweight and comfortable feel, I wish it were more discreetly-sized and less conspicuous, especially when in public places and social situations.

    HARDWARE – 4.5 / 5

The Soundgear Sense leverages air conduction technology to deliver sound without blocking your ears. Its 16.2mm dynamic speakers ensure good sound quality with a balanced profile. Bass is present but doesn’t overpower the mids and highs, resulting in a clear and enjoyable listening experience. While the open-ear design might not deliver the noise-canceling immersion of some closedback headphones, it excels in clarity and allows you to stay aware of your surroundings.

Four built-in microphones deliver excellent voice quality, and the open-ear design provides a more natural-sounding experience during calls.

Equipped with Bluetooth 5.3, it has multi-point connectivity and can be paired with two devices simultaneously. In my case, I paired the Soundgear Sense to both my phone and my laptop, and I was able to use it to attend Zoom meetings on my laptop and then listen to music and take calls on my phone seamlessly without the inconvenience of having to connect/disconnect either device.

The Soundgear Sense features intuitive touch controls on the earbud housings. These controls allow you to play/pause music, skip tracks, adjust volume, answer/reject calls, and activate your voice assistant. The controls are responsive and can be customized through the JBL Headphones app to match your preferences. For example, you can assign a specific function, like activating ambient mode to a single-tap or double-tap gesture.

Each earbud offers a respectable battery life of 6 hours on a single charge. The included charging case provides an additional 18 hours, bringing the total playtime to 24 hours. While not the longest battery life on the market, it’s sufficient for extended listening sessions between charges. The included Type-C USB cable allows a quick charge of 15 minutes to deliver an additional 4 hours of playback, and a full charge takes only 2 hours.

    USER EXPERIENCE – 4.5 / 5

Surprisingly, the Soundgear Sense shines in terms of comfort and fit. The lightweight design and adjustable ear hooks ensure a secure fit, while the open-ear design allows for passive ventilation, which eases ear fatigue during extended use. In fact, I often actually forgot they were sitting on my ears and would only be reminded after some hours when the pressure of the ear hooks started to feel uncomfortable. Compared to other in-ear headphones, I tended to wear the Soundgear Sense longer.

The open-ear design is a double-edged sword. While it allows for complete situational awareness, it also means sound leakage. This can be an issue if you’re listening to music in quiet environments or want complete noise isolation. Additionally, outside noise can interfere with your listening experience at times. For instance, traffic noise on a busy street or loud conversations in a crowded cafe can disrupt your audio. In general, I liked using the Soundgear Sense while working and during commutes as they allowed me to enjoy my playlist while staying aware of what was going on around me. For spending alone time in cafes, though, I prefer the JBL Live Free noise-canceling in-ear buds.

Adding to the ease of use and functionality of JBL audio devices is its JBL Headphones app, which is user-friendly and convenient. The app allows me to customize the touch controls, adjust EQ settings, check battery life, and even “find my earbuds” — all from my phone.

    VALUE – 3.5 / 5

The JBL Soundgear Sense is listed at PHP9,499, falling within the mid-range price bracket for wireless headphones. Considering the unique open-ear design, good sound quality, and comfortable fit, they offer a compelling value proposition for users who prioritize situational awareness during activities for a safe and comfortable listening experience.
