USBs and removable devices continue to spread malware — Kaspersky

    [ad_1]

Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky is urging Filipinos to be wary of careless plugging of USBs into their computers unless they have been scanned following the release of data that 36.80% of users in the Philippines were attacked by local threats from January to December 2023.

Local threats are malware spread through removable media such as flash drives, even CDs and DVDs, and other “offline” methods. Worms and file viruses account for the majority of incidents.

The Philippines ranks third in Southeast Asia with the most number of users attacked by local threats, according to the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN). The country trails behind Vietnam (53.30%) and Indonesia (41.10%).

KSN is a complex distributed infrastructure dedicated to processing cybersecurity-related data streams from millions of voluntary participants around the world. KSN data is collected from Kaspersky customers here who have installed the company’s cybersecurity software on their computers and voluntarily shared information with the firm.

Globally, the Philippines placed 76th in Kaspersky’s KSN report in 2023. It was 72nd in 2022 and 70th in 2021. Since 2019, the country’s overall percentage of Kaspersky users attacked by local threats ranged from 42% to 51%. Throughout 2023, Kaspersky Solutions detected and blocked a total of 22,731,157 local threats.

The top ten most attacked countries in 2023 are from Central Asia, Africa, and South Asia.

“Thumb drives are so nifty! Over time, it has become smaller in size, yet its capacity has tremendously increased and we can now store large files like videos and multiple copies of them on a single drive. They can even last up to 10 years or more now, so quality has also evolved drastically. There’s no doubt that even with cloud storage now available, I think USBs are going to stick around for a long time,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

“But USBs are a boon to everyone who uses them, cybercriminals included, and a bane for those unaware that such offline hardware could cause a catastrophe. We need to understand that cyberattacks don’t come solely from the internet. Attackers are finding ways to get to your devices, like with the use of these seemingly plain removable media, which we could prevent with proper USB hygiene,” added Yeo.

According to Kaspersky, secure USB drive manufacturers are following the FIPS 140 certification standard that involves a cryptographic security disclosure and validation process. But some encrypted USB drives pass certification and are still vulnerable to attacks—sometimes even the easy ones.

The danger levels of USBs are currently classified into three (3) categories:

    1. Serendipitous: Open to an opportunistic attacker with minimal resources—basically, at this level you find a person who may have found or stolen a drive and is eager to get their hands on the information it possibly contains.
    2. Professional: Available to attackers with resources, albeit limited ones. Mostly, attackers at this level are interested in gathering large amounts of information; and
    3. State-sponsored: Requires attackers with plenty of resources. Usually, attackers are after specific data, and keys that are worth a large investment.

Below are some helpful tips from Kaspersky experts to keep your USB sticks clean and your computers, safe:

Configure your OS to avoid running anything from USBs

If an attacker leaves an infected USB card in your office and you pick one up and plug into your computer, you need to make sure your antivirus software is set up to prevent the opening and running of any infected files. If you’re using Kaspersky Premium, the software will perform an auto-scan of your USB stick the moment you plug it in. After scanning, it will give you the option to repair or it will alert you if a threat is detected.

    Update your OS

When your OS offers you a patch update, download it. Patches are released to improve upon imperfections and vulnerabilities within your software and neglecting to keep up with the latest versions could make you susceptible to viruses. In the case of USB malware, make sure your OS is patched against AutoRun exploits so again, your system is not automatically running anything from your removable devices.

    Don’t copy executable files

Executable files can cause your computer to perform tasks that have been assigned by encoded instructions. You can imagine the danger of copying this type of file from an unknown source so it’s best to avoid doing so altogether. We recommend downloading all software directly from official, trusted sites only.

    Keep your drives separate

On top of making sure you’re only using USB drives given to you by trusted sources, you should also make sure that you aren’t using them to mix business with pleasure. It’s safest to keep your work and personal information separate from one another, especially if your USB sticks are being used by multiple people in your home or office.

  • Research: Filipino gamers spend the least on games across APAC

Research: Filipino gamers spend the least on games across APAC

    [ad_1]

‘Unlocking Gamers in Asia Pacific’ — the latest research from Omnicom Media Group Asia Pacific (OMG APAC) — reveals Filipino gamers have the lowest propensity to spend PHP620 and above in a month on in-game purchases compared to their APAC counterparts. Gamers in China, for example, spend at least three times more, and those in Hong Kong spend two times more.

In general, 50% bought an in-game skin, character, or accessory in the last three months. Other items purchased during the period included battle/season passes (38%), gears/weapons (33%), extra lives, hints, or boosters (29%), and gaming currency (28%).

While these items offer brands a variety of opportunities to create in-game collaborations, companies might see lower-than-expected conversions due to low average monthly spending. Also, these branded collaborations might only work if there is high brand affinity and if they offer value to gamers.

The concept of creating value for Filipino gamers is crucial because when they do spend on microtransactions, the reasons are value-specific, e.g., when there is a sale (50%), in-game power-ups (36%), gifts (31%), a treat for oneself or someone else (31%), and limited-time release (29%).

Therefore, branded microtransactions require a variety of exciting, urgent, and emotional messages to persuade gamers to purchase.

According to Newzoo, the global gaming market is expected to generate USD189.3 billion in 2024. Asia offers the gaming industry a huge opportunity as it is home to 1.5 million gamers, according to Google, with a USD70 billion gaming market. The industry is not losing steam in Southeast Asia either, as it is now worth USD6.9 billion and backed by 270 million gamers.

The research aims to offer a better understanding of Filipino gamers and covers four areas: gaming behaviors, gaming preferences, online engagement, and advertising and brand attitudes.

Mary Buenaventura, OMG Philippines CEO, said, “While Filipino gamers might experience Internet challenges such as penetration and speed, one should never underestimate the opportunities in gaming. This research indicates that most gamers can no longer be stereotyped as hermits in their dark rooms. Instead, they are highly mobile and play during breaks or during their daily commute, thereby democratizing the gaming experience. To succeed in this space, brands are encouraged to invest in game development or in-store gaming experiences that meet the high expectations of Filipino gamers’ and offer them original, real-world moments.”

For brands eager to target Filipino gamers, here are some key consumer needs and behaviors to take note of.

Provide originality in games; create real-world moments around games

Filipino gamers want gaming collaborations to be a seamless merger between the game and the real world. To fulfill their desire to be incentivized and capture Filipinos’ attention, brands can create original games, and in-store gaming experiences, and even create or sponsor eSports teams. Real-world incentives for in-game performances and creating or sponsoring gaming tournaments round off the top five initiatives Filipino gamers wish to see from brands.

Additionally, brands are advised to not only identify the game but also think about their natural role within the gaming world. A possible way to achieve success is through a multi-channel campaign that covers in-game and real-world activations. These may create greater engagement or offer higher chances of completing calls- to-action.

    Mobile is your battlefield

It is common to associate the term ‘gaming’ with PCs and consoles, but the Philippines’ gaming industry has been democratized as it is a predominantly mobile gaming country. Although Filipino gamers play on different platforms, mobile (95%) is still their device of choice compared to PC (28%) and console (12%) because it is portable, easy to use, and useful for unwinding before bed. Interestingly, PC and console gamers are noticeably lower in the Philippines compared to other markets.

This reinforces the point that gamers should no longer be considered a niche category. In fact, everyone is a gamer since they play on the go and during breaks.

Another contributing factor to this trend is the rapid growth in Internet users in the Philippines due to the economic digitalization that followed COVID-19. The population is also bilingual, allowing them access to more gaming titles.

To get more bang for your buck, brands are advised to target consumers of all ages on mobile.

Not all Filipino gamers identify with the label ‘gamer’

Gaming is a popular activity in the Philippines. 61% of Filipino gamers identify with the label ‘gamer’, on par with the APAC average and sharing similar sentiments as counterparts in Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, 28% do not consider themselves gamers, and 10% are unsure. Across all generations, those who do not associate with the term ‘gamer’ share two common themes for its definition: time spent playing and the device played on.

The top reason was respondents only gaming on their smartphone (44%), like those in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Some also said gaming is not their only hobby (35%) and that they do not play enough (33%).

These specific behavior traits indicate respondents potentially feel the label requires a certain amount of weight and dedication to be able to identify themselves as such.

It is important for brands to have tailored strategies for various audience segments. Brands can categorize them into ‘gamers’ and ‘casual players’ based on their behavior and how they identify themselves.

Also, the Philippine government has focused on showing how gaming can help society hone their life and professional skills such as time management and multi-tasking. Companies can leverage this national momentum by working alongside

governmental efforts to showcase the life skills gaming can offer and encourage the use of the term ‘gamer’.

Ensure mobile gaming integrations are low in time commitment

The act of gaming serves various purposes to Filipinos, but most of them do so as a time to unwind from stress. When they play, they feel relaxed, happy, and excited. These feelings remain even after gaming, and Filipinos even feel energized as they are able to escape reality.

The top five mobile gaming genres played at least once a week are multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), word/trivia, card/board games, first-person shooter, and tile matching. These are all quick and easy-to-play genres, as gamers can jump in and out with ease, and are mainly played by one user except for MOBA games, which are predominantly popular among gamers aged 18 to 35. The range of preferred genres is a strong indication that companies are not mainly dealing with hardcore gamers, reinforcing the point that everyone is a gamer.

That said, managing a busy schedule is the top factor that stops them from playing. Other factors are intrusive pop-up ads, the game not running smoothly on a device, and a toxic gameplay environment/stream.

With time and quality being the key barriers to the gaming experience, brands need to ensure their gaming integrations are low in time commitment, simple, and less frequent. Doing so could facilitate a positive experience that aligns with the gaming lore.

Keep Filipinos engaged with attention-grabbing creatives in games

Despite their busy schedules, Filipino gamers are still eager to complete their gameplay, including earning achievements and finishing side quests. 64% play as much as they can, 39% are determined to complete the entire game, and 32% rely on game recommendations from friends.

Therefore, it is important to keep them engaged in their limited time with new updates or credible recommendations, which will draw their attention to game titles. Brands can do so by creating game-specific creatives that will capture their attention without affecting the gaming experience.

Leverage the power of word of mouth and key opinion leaders

Word of mouth is key to unlocking gaming audiences. 89% of Filipino gamers source for gaming updates or news online, mainly through gaming publishers on social media (51%), gaming influencers or content creators (44%), and blogs (33%). These key opinion leaders and their online discussions could offer strategic opportunities within a brand’s campaign.

When it comes to social media platforms, Facebook remains the top choice across all ages from 18 to 54. That said, brand communications should still be targeted, and companies are advised to use the right platforms to reach their desired audiences.

The research surveyed 1,000 respondents in the Philippines — 49% male and 51% female. 40% were based in major cities, 21% from towns, and 19% from minor cities and the countryside, respectively. Most respondents were aged 35 to 44 years old (36%) and 18 to 24 years old (31%).

Overall, 12,204 respondents in Asia Pacific were surveyed across 13 markets. They are Australia, India, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. There is an equal gender split between males and females, and slightly more than two-thirds of respondents are aged 25 to 44 years old. The remaining 20% are aged 18 to 24, and 13% are aged 45 to 54.

  • Sony releases the Alpha 9 III with world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor

Sony releases the Alpha 9 III with world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor

    [ad_1]

Sony continues to change the game of photography with the recent introduction of the Alpha 9 III camera, equipped with the world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor, now available in the Philippines.

This impressive camera boasts top-of-the-line, innovative features that will open up a new world of possibilities for both beginner and professional photographers alike to capture that decisive moment. Hence, the Sony Alpha 9 III is quickly becoming a go-to camera for some photographers, including Sony Alpha Professional Jiggie Alejandrino and independent documentary photographer Martin San Diego.

Changing the game of photography with the world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor

Sony has established a new dimension of camera performance with the world’s first global shutter full-frame stacked 24.6 megapixel CMOS image sensor, with the capability of shooting continuous bursts of up to 120fps with AF/AE tracking and a maximum shutter speed of 1/80000 second, combined with the latest image processing engine BIONZ XR®.

These features capture fast-moving subjects with absolutely no image distortion and preserve split-second moments all in stunning detail, which are only possible through the sensor’s global shutter system. Unlike a regular rolling shutter system, the Alpha 9 III’s global shutter system exposes all pixels simultaneously, eliminating flicker in single images or flash bonding.

“My favorite feature of the Alpha 9 III camera is the global shutter. Aside from the fact that it allows me to capture bursts of up to 120FPS, [the global shutter] changes the way flash photography is used, as it makes carrying huge flash units to projects obsolete,” Jiggie shared about the benefits of the camera in his work.

Along with the global shutter system, the camera’s designated AI processing unit uses Real-time Recognition AF (autofocus) to recognize a wide variety of subjects with high precision. By combining the camera’s high-speed performance with the sensor’s highly accurate subject recognition performance, it is possible to easily photograph decisive scenes and moments that cannot be captured with the naked eye.

The Alpha 9 III is also equipped with the newly installed Pre-Capture function that allows the user to go back up to 1 second and record the moment before pressing the shutter.

“The pre-capture feature is a dream for photojournalists and sports photographers. Paired with flawless autofocus and blazing frame rates of up to 120 fps, missed shots are now a thing of the past,” Martin exclaimed, underlining the camera’s ability to capture every moment in the eyes of the photographer. “The imaging technology in this camera is as transparent as ever, there’s almost nothing between you and the moments you want to be captured. Plus there’s just this unique confidence when you hold this camera. You just know it won’t fail on you.”

Capture the action even for videos

The Alpha 9 III camera with its global shutter image sensor can also capture videos with no distortion. The Alpha 9 III captures 4K movies at up to 120p, and at 60p with full pixel readout and 6K oversampling.

The AI processing unit in the Alpha 9 III camera supports movies with accurate subject form and movement recognition, providing a significant improvement in human eye recognition performance with Real-time Recognition AF and Real-time Tracking, automatically recognizing, tracking, and focusing on the eyes of a specified subject.

The Alpha 9 III also has the image creation process S-Cinetone™, making human skin and subjects stand out beautifully by creating natural highlights.

Streamlined for pros with the camera’s advanced operability and flexibility

Sony has listened to the voices of professional photographers and created operability and reliability that supports professional image makers with an improved, ergonomic design and a compatible VG-C5 vertical grip (sold separately) for long shooting sessions.

New features for the Alpha 9 III include a playback image filter that allows the user to efficiently select many images using high-speed continuous shooting and a function menu that can be used even during image playback, strongly supporting professional workflows from shooting to delivery.

For both Jiggie and Martin, the Alpha 9 III has truly redefined their work by closing the gap between capturing and image editing. As shown by some of the country’s top players in the photography industry, the Alpha 9 III is a perfect partner for those looking to upgrade their photography game, enhancing their passions to the next level.

“This camera is made for the future,” Jiggie shared, emphasizing how the Alpha 9 III is a camera that his fellow photographers in the industry must look forward to. “I can imagine this will be the must-have camera for the Paris Olympics this year,” Martin added.

    Availability

The Alpha 9 III is now available in the Philippines with an SRP of PHP349,599. To learn more about the Alpha 9 III, visit https://bit.ly/SonyA9III.

  • TNT stages 1st full-length musical ‘Ang Babaeng Hindi Namamatay’

TNT stages 1st full-length musical ‘Ang Babaeng Hindi Namamatay’

    [ad_1]

After months of rescheduling, Tinik ng Teatro (TNT), in collaboration with HIMIG – Musicians of Adamson University, has officially returned on stage for their major musical production “Ang Babaeng Hindi Namamatay” at the Adamson Theater on Feb. 10.

Hundreds of students, guests, and alumni attended the first production that the campus’ theatre-based organization held since the return of face-to-face classes and full-length musical ever to be produced since its foundation in 1986.

The musical told the story of Adaiah, played by fourth-year communication student Cheska Manalastas. She was endowed with immortality and rummaged through the settings of Philippine history from its pre-colonial era to modern times.

The three-hour musical flaunted originally composed songs throughout its run with the advocacy of sociopolitical subtexts such as women empowerment, and the creativity and talents that nestled within the Adamson community.

    𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

Wrapping up the entire production, Manalastas, who is also TNT’s former artistic director, expressed her relief after months of seeming preparation coming to fruition.

“I’m very happy kasi na-pull off namin ‘to  (because we have pulled this off) kahit na andaming postponements na nangyari throughout (even if there were lots of postponements throughout) and I am proud of everyone’s performance,” she said.

“Talagang sinubok yung patience and teamwork ng bawat isa samin dito kung paano dapat bilang isang actor, at alam kong hindi lang ako ang may natutunan dito, lahat kami, from this experience,” she added.

Head director Heart Romero shared how she handled the whole production team and acknowledged those who gave positive remarks on their performances. “I told my actors beforehand na (to) don’t think for anything else and just, enjoy the show which is something that they seem did, and as the Head that was something that I liked to see from them,” she said.

Romero was also touched by the audience’s applause and feedback, which made her entire experience directing worthwhile.

“Masaya ako dun sa naging reaksyon ng audience and for me this was a memorable experience, and would call it a success not just [on] my part, but for us [TNT] too,” she said.

    𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸?

Spectators shared with Komunikator their insights into the production.

Ren Memoracion, a third-year communication student, complimented the production team’s technical direction for being able to deliver the settings, which he described as “powerful” while projecting his excitement for their Theatre Arts subject.

“Na-excite ako kasi may Theatre Arts [subject] din kami (I got excited because we also have Theatre Arts) this semester, and through this play, nakikita ko kung ano yung mga pwede naming gawin, pag kami naman nag-perform (I can see what are the things that we can do once it’s our time to perform),” he said.

A campus visitor, Mark Gayo, admitted that it was his first time watching a musical but expressed his appreciation for the actors for their apparent efforts, even from the layman’s perspective.

“Maganda siya [the musical play] para sa’kin, dama ko yung emosyon sa bawat actors at kita kong pinagpaguran nila itong performance na ‘to (It was great for me, I can feel the emotions on every actor and I can see that they put a lot of effort on this performance),” he assessed.

Pauline Par, an alumna of TNT, expressed her admiration for the organization to now bank on the concept of incorporating musical production.

“It’s been such a long time since we did a musical-kind of play, in the 90s pa, so, it is very applicable,  especially for the students of Adamson University since well-versed din sila pagdating sa arts eh (they are well-versed when it comes to Arts),” she said.

Moreover, Par also shared the same joy for TNT and hoped that such projects would continue in the future.

“Congratulations to TNT! It was a good run at sana mapagpatuloy pa siya (and I hope this continues) in the future,” she said.

  • AI and Emotions: How we taught technology to feel and how technology changed the way we feel

AI and Emotions: How we taught technology to feel and how technology changed the way we feel

    [ad_1]

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have rapidly developed in recent years. Large language model AI took the stage last year, demonstrating how AI can be trained to understand us. Yet, there is still something missing from the current AI and human interaction: emotion.

One of the limiting factors in AI is that, by default, it is merely a machine trained to respond to whatever it was trained upon. Even AI with highly advanced machine learning is limited to only providing what is asked without fully understanding why. This lack of connection still separates man from machine, and why man feels something missing when interacting with AI.

Emotional AI and decoding the human connection

To address this missing element, in 1995, researchers at MIT started looking at “Affective Computing.” Then MIT Media Lab professor Rosalind Picard described Affective Computing as “computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions.” Now, it is also known as Affective AI and Emotional AI.

Emotional AI, simply put, is a subset of AI that analyzes human emotion. It utilizes various data like language, voice/ audio, and other cues to determine how to react to certain things. Emotional AI is already part of our world, with its most common use found in marketing. Emotional AI is used for product review analysis and recommendation tailoring. They’re among the AI tools behind some of your shopping algorithms and even video recommendations.

    The loneliest generation

Have you ever heard the term “the loneliest generation” to describe Gen Z? In a 2019 survey, it was found that 73% of Gen Z, those currently 11-26 years old, felt lonely sometimes or always. Most of the loneliest respondents were those in the workforce or entering the workforce, ages 18-23 (back in 2019).

This is an ironic sentiment, as Gen Z is considered the most internet-savvy generation. Many would argue that Gen Z is the first generation whose lives have been entirely online, with mainstream internet kicking off just a few years before their birth.

When the internet took off, it was an unprecedented highway to information and communication. It broke barriers by providing new methods of communication, from chat and message rooms, instant messaging apps, and social media to the facilitation of mass adoption of video calls and conferencing.

It’s this communication highway that allowed us to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue under the new normal. While the world has slowly returned to pre-pandemic status, our reliance on these online communication tools persists.

In the study, 71% of those feeling lonely were heavy social media users, another irony when the platform was supposed to further connect individuals.

The overreliance on technology, particularly social media, has changed the way we interact. Gen Z is the first generation to depend solely on online communication. Perhaps this reliance on online communication has also made them a generation that’s socially disconnected as compared to earlier generations.

Loneliness has gotten so bad that the US has deemed it an epidemic. Doctors and other health professionals warn that loneliness and social disconnection are physically unhealthy, equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Can AI save the loneliest generation?

Yet the problem of the loneliest generation will not be limited to just Gen Z. Many experts predict that under prevailing conditions, the epidemic will spread to more individuals. As we rely more heavily on technology to move the world, we are also slowly disconnecting with more people.

This continued cycle raises the question, “Can Emotional AI help?” There are already some attempts. AI therapists utilizing Emotional AI are increasingly available. These AI therapists do help in a small way, allowing individuals to learn more about themselves and offer mental health support and, in some cases, diagnostics.

However, these AI therapy solutions are not without risk. Human nature is complex, and there’s a possibility that what AI offers may not be right for you. There’s also the so-called AI bias, with AI not trained about certain races’ data sets. For example, a person of color or different ethnicity will have different circumstances and reactions to stimuli than the typical white American.

There’s also the shifting of reliance. AI chatbots have grown so good at replicating human conversation that we forget they’re AI in the first place. Some individuals could shift their need for connection to the AI itself, further isolating themselves from a genuine human and social connection.

Finally, there are privacy concerns when relying entirely on AI. Behind these AI are the organizations that train and program them. While some have good intentions to improve human lives, there is still the risk of violating users’ privacy as they share intimate details about themselves with the AI.

At the end of the day, while AI can be a tool to process our emotions, it remains just that – a tool. Humans are complex individuals, and part of that complexity is our need for genuine social connections. Genuine connection can’t be found just by scouring the interweb or through digital communication. It is built upon friendship, trust, and a real organic touch. While we can find connections online, only a few are genuine enough to be carried off offline.

  • Globe underscores the need for ethical AI at Mapúa MCM Career Fair

Globe underscores the need for ethical AI at Mapúa MCM Career Fair

    [ad_1]

Amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), leading digital solutions platform Globe tackled the need for ethical practices and human oversight over the technology in an insightful discussion with students at the recent Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM) Career and Internship Fair.

Dennis Abella, VP for Operations Systems Support (OSS) Program Delivery at Globe, noted how science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEM) can prepare students for future careers where AI integration is increasingly becoming indispensable.

But while AI stimulates creativity and innovation, and enhances critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, he pointed out that it is crucial to understand AI’s ethical and societal implications.

“AI is powerful, but it still requires human common sense to make the right decisions. It cannot discern beyond its programmed capabilities. Because of this, we need responsible digital citizenship, ensuring that we make informed, ethical decisions about technology use and its impact on society,” said Abella in his talk “AI Unleashed.”

Globe is currently testing the use of AI in certain aspects of the business, including customer service and automation of its digital channels. These initiatives ensure that risks in the areas of security, compliance, and ethics are mitigated.

“AI systems, by nature, lack moral reasoning and an understanding of complex social norms. This is why human oversight is critical, as it ensures that AI operates within ethical boundaries and prevents possible misuse that may lead to harm,” he added.

Globe and Mapúa MCM share a commitment to advancing technological education while ensuring that students grasp the significance of human oversight in AI.

“This collaboration with Globe provides our students with invaluable insights into the practical and ethical dimensions of AI. It helps equip our students with the skills and perspective needed to succeed in a tech-driven world,” said Leopoldo Aquino, Jr., Director of the Office of Corporate Partnership and Alumni Affairs at Mapúa MCM.

Engr. Alejandro H. Ballado, Jr., EVP/COO of Mapúa MCM, meanwhile, emphasized the career expo’s role in bridging the gap between academic preparation and industry expectations.

“The Mapúa MCM Career and Internship Fair, supported by Globe, is more than just a job fair. It’s a platform for future-proofing our students. By exposing them to industry leaders and the latest technological trends, we ensure they are ready to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy,” Ballado stated.

Globe’s partnership with Mapúa MCM is in line with the company’s proactive efforts to collaborate with academic institutions across the country to help prepare future-ready students and open doors to opportunities in the technology sector.

160-km Freedom March continues to honor heroes and commemorate history

    [ad_1]

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB), in partnership with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Department of National Defense (DND), will hold the annual Freedom March, a 160-kilometer commemorative walk for the heroes of WWII, this coming March 16 and 17, 2024.

Descendants of our World War II Filipino and US veterans along with military personnel, representatives from the local and national government, the diplomatic community, students, families, and more, will once again walk in the footsteps of our heroes at the Bataan Death March Commemorative Walk to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Bataan.

The Freedom March will trace the actual historical route of the Death March, which will start in Mariveles, Bataan, and will conclude in Capas, Tarlac.

The public is invited to join the solemn tribute which commemorates the valor and sacrifice of Filipino and American heroes of the Battle of Bataan during one of history’s most poignant chapters.

“The Freedom March isn’t just a journey over land; it’s a journey through time, honoring the undying spirit of those who walked before us,” Mike Villa-Real, PVB first vice president for marketing and communications, said. “This year, as we walk, we don’t just tread on the ground; we walk alongside the echoes of bravery and resilience that resonate through our nation’s history.”

The Freedom March encapsulates the route taken by approximately 66,000 Filipino and 10,000 American POWs. It stretches from Mariveles and Saysain Point in Bagac town, Bataan province, to Camp O’Donnell in Capas town, Tarlac province.

This path, steeped in history, offers a tangible connection to the past, turning every step into a personal encounter with history. This act of remembrance reinforces the narratives of endurance and resilience that form the bedrock of our heritage.

According to  Villa-Real, the 2024 Freedom March is designed to be a powerful educational experience, providing participants with an opportunity to connect deeply with history. Unlike the original Death March’s grueling journey, the event features a symbolic 10-kilometer walk, making it accessible for more individuals who wish to participate in this act of remembrance. Participants may opt to join certain segments of the walk that may start in a location nearest and most convenient for them.

The march symbolizes a united front in honoring the sacrifices made for our nation’s freedom. “Each step taken in the Freedom March is a step of gratitude, a step of understanding, and a step towards ensuring that the legacy of our heroes endures,” added Villa-Real.

The Freedom March extends an open invitation to everyone, a call to gather not just to walk but to immerse in the deep lessons of history. Interested participants may register at https://bit.ly/freedom-march-2024. Registration is free.

“As we march, we do more than remember; we pledge to carry the torch of their legacy forward, shining a light for future generations,” concludes Villa-Real.

Google rebrands Bard as Gemini, launches Gemini Advanced

    [ad_1]

As part of its bold and responsible AI innovation, Google announced that Bard is now called Gemini, and comes with a paid version, Gemini Advanced. Currently accessible via web, Gemini and Gemini Advanced will soon be available in the country as apps on iOS and Android.

The rationale behind naming Bard as Gemini stems from the intent of reflecting the advanced technology of Google powering the generative or chatbot AI. Gemini is now available in over 40 languages and more than 230 countries and territories at no cost, including the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Gemini Advanced is a subscription service powered by Google’s largest and most capable state-of-the-art AI model to date, Ultra 1.0. In blind evaluations with third-party raters, Gemini Advanced is now the most preferred chatbot compared to leading alternatives.

Gemini Advanced is far more capable of highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions, and collaborating on creative projects. Gemini Advanced not only allows people to have longer, more detailed conversations; it also better understands the context from previous prompts.

For example, Gemini Advanced can be a personal tutor — creating step-by-step instructions, sample quizzes, or back-and-forth discussions tailored to learning styles. It can also help with more advanced coding scenarios, serving as a sounding board for ideas and different coding approaches. It can help digital creators as well to go from idea to creation by generating fresh content, analyzing recent trends, brainstorming improved ways to grow their audiences, and so much more!

Gemini Advanced is available as part of the new Google One AI Premium Plan for USD19.99/month, starting with a two-month trial at no cost. This plan gives people the best of Google AI and Google’s latest advancements, along with all the benefits of the existing Google One Premium plan, such as 2TB of storage. In addition, AI Premium subscribers will soon be able to use Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and more (formerly known as Duet AI).

Gemini has already rolled out on Android and iOS phones as an app in the U.S. in English, and will be fully available in the coming weeks. Soon, people will be able to access it in more locations, countries, and languages.

Try Gemini on the web now: gemini.google.com.
