TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Cade Klubnik had 235 passing yards and threw touchdown passes to Antonio Williams and T.J. Moore as No. 15 Clemson jumped to an early lead and cruised past Florida State 29-13 on Saturday night.
Phil Mafah ran for 136 yards on 20 carries as Clemson (4-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) was in control from the start, taking a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers finished with 265 rushing yards, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.
Klubnik completed 19 of 33 passes, including a 57-yard touchdown to Williams. The junior quarterback also had 62 rushing yards.
Coach Dabo Swinney picked up his 174th win at Clemson, breaking the record for victories at an ACC school — a mark held by Florida State’s Bobby Bowden.
Brock Glenn completed 23 of 41 passes for 228 yards and touchdowns to Amaree Williams and Ja’Khi Douglas for Florida State (1-5, 1-4). A redshirt freshman who was making his third career start, Glenn completed more passes than he had in his previous two starts plus mop-up time.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Graham Mertz threw a touchdown pass, Montrell Johnson ran for a score and Florida held on to beat UCF 24-13 on Saturday night.
The Gators (3-2) won consecutive games for the first time in nearly a year and handed the Knights (3-2) a second loss in as many weeks.
UCF dug itself an early hole when coach Gus Malzahn went for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 43 early in the second quarter. Quarterback KJ Jefferson was stopped for no gain, and the Gators took over in plus territory. Florida scored three plays later to take a double-digit lead, 14-3.
Johnson made it 21-3 with a 3-yard leap, and Trey Smack’s short field goal put the Gators up 24-3 at halftime.
UCF played considerably better in the second half and had chances down the stretch, but third-down struggles that included five sacks ended any chance the Knights had of rallying.
Mertz completed 19 of 23 passes for 179 yards, including a 13-yarder to Elijhah Badger for a score. Highly touted freshman DJ Lagway played every third series and completed all four of his throws for 50 yards.
Johnson ran 10 times for 54 yards.
UCF never got its ground game — which ranked first in the Big 12 and second in the nation entering the week — going. RJ Harvey ran 16 times for 75 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown in the fourth.
Jefferson was under pressure much of the night. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 165 yards and an interception. He ran 12 times for minus-18 yards.
The outcome did little to take pressure off Florida coach Billy Napier, who improved to 14-16 in three seasons but has done little to regain the confidence of fans and maybe even his bosses. Napier was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for vehemently arguing a running-into-the-kicker penalty.
MISSING KNIGHTS
UCF receiver Xavier Townsend and four teammates are redshirting and planning to enter the transfer portal. The school confirmed their decisions before the game. Defensive end Kaven Call, right tackle Wes Dorsey and safeties Bryon Threats and William Wells joined Townsend in choosing to opt out after UCF’s first four games.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Seth Henigan threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns — the 40th straight game he has tossed a TD pass — as Memphis beat Florida State 20-12 on Saturday.
Henigan connected with Greg Desrosiers Jr. and Anthony Landphere on touchdown passes as Memphis (3-0) jumped out to a 20-3 lead in the third quarter. The Tigers scored touchdowns on drives of 65 and 75 yards, finishing 7 of 17 on third downs and 2 of 3 on fourth downs in the game.
“Winning is hard, and I never want to minimize a win,” Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said. “But this is monumental. Let’s call it what it is. To go on the road, regardless of the record, they were preseason No. 10 in the country.
“It’s huge for our program. This is a game that’s going to be remembered for a long time.”
Memphis players, coaches and fans won’t soon forget it. And the Tigers take home quite the bonus: a $1.3 million guarantee as well as a resume-building victory on the road over a Power 4 team.
Memphis dominated on defense and made plenty of timely plays on offense.

“Obviously offensively very disappointing performance. Never able to really get much going. Second half we were able to move the ball but had a couple explosive plays up still had too many negatives.”
Ryan Fitzgerald made a 54-yard field-goal attempt, his third kick from 50 or more yards in three games, for the Seminoles.

Florida State played without starting safety Shyheim Brown, starting right tackle Jeremiah Byers and backup linebackers Omar Graham Jr. and Shawn Murphy, who were announced as out hours before kickoff. And the Seminoles lost starting left tackle Darius Washington during warmups, Norvell said.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Jalen Milroe ran for two touchdowns and threw for a pair of fourth-quarter scores to help No. 4 Alabama pull away to beat South Florida 42-16 on Saturday night.
The Crimson Tide (2-0) were locked in a struggle with the Bulls (1-1) most of the way before exploding for 28 points in the final 10 minutes. It had turned into a surprising test for new coach Kalen DeBoer, whose team came in as 30-point favorites and didn’t come to life offensively until late.
Alabama lost three second-half fumbles and had an array of penalties, entering the fourth up just 14-13. Then Milroe had touchdown passes of 16 yards to Kobe Prentiss and 43 yards to Ryan Williams. Jamarion Miller added a 56-yard touchdown run and Justice Haynes had a 29-yarder in the final 2:30.
Miller finished with 140 yards rushing.
The Bulls bedeviled Alabama’s offense much of the way for the second straight year, this time with Milroe on the field. The Tide quarterback was benched for last year’s game, which was tied at the half before Alabama won 17-3.
He completed 17 of 27 passes for 199 yards but was sacked four times and lost a fumble from under center at the South Florida 2 in the second half.
Milroe’s first TD pass gave the Tide a 21-13 lead. The Bulls answered with John Collins’ third field goal on a drive propelled by Nay’Quan Wright’s two 19-yard runs and a targeting penalty against Justin Jefferson.
Then Milroe hit the freshman Williams, who spun away from a defender and scampered into the end zone for his third touchdown of 40-plus yards in two college games.
Alabama lost two fumbles in its own territory in the first 4:05 of the second half, and Milroe later lost another.

Daytona Beach firefighters executed a quick attack on the fire and extinguished it, containing it to the area where it started, the Daytona Beach Fire Department said.
No injuries were reported.
“The cause was determined to be from an improperly discarded cigarette,” a fire department Facebook post said.
Daytona Beach fire officials said smoking caused 7,800 fires in 2021. Smoking-related house fires killed 275 people and injured 750 others. Losses were $361,500,000, officials said.
Cigarette users should ensure cigarettes are completely out when getting rid of them, stay alert, never smoke in bed, and dispose of cigarettes in ashtrays or sand buckets, fire officials said.

Waguespack gave up one run and four hits over four innings in his first start since Sept. 25, 2019, and fourth appearance this season. Garrett Cleavinger (2-0) followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Phil Maton, Colon Poche, Jason Adam and Pete Fairbanks — who worked the ninth to get his third save in as many chances — closed out the Rays’ fifth win in six games. Fairbanks retired the final two batters with a runner on third.
“Really good job from the bullpen from the start really, including Waguespack, he kind of set the tone,” Poche said.
Tampa Bay has five starting pitchers on the injured list and the Rays’ bullpen entered with an AL-worst 6.43 ERA.
San Francisco has three extra-base hits, including one Friday, over the last three games and gone without a homer in seven straight. The Giants went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position against Tampa Bay.

DAYTONA BEACH — Hinson Middle School students recently learned about the dangers of tobacco and vaping during an anti-tobacco pep rally April 1.
Hosted by the school’s Parent Teacher Student Association, the goal was to educate students and their parents about the harmful effects of smoking and vaping while empowering them to stay tobacco free.
At the assembly, school board member Carl Persis noted just how “popular” vaping is in Volusia County Schools, telling the audience that the district has sent at least one person to the hospital each week this school year for vaping.
“I know it sounds like, ‘Oh, that could never happen to me,’” Persis said. “Well, the person that went to the hospital thought it could never happen to him or her either. So take it seriously. And, of course, watch out for yourselves, but I’m asking you, as middle school students, to watch out for your friends.”
Radio station HOT 94.1’s DJ Jay Love emceed the event and students listened to guest speakers and participated in basketball scrimmages with players from Bethune-Cookman University’s women’s basketball team.
Hinson Middle’s PTSA funded this event with grant money awarded from the National PTA.
“Vaping has become very popular with the middle school and high school age groups and we want to use this opportunity to not only educate on the dangers to our parents and students, but also to as many as we can,” said Amy Annon, Hinson Middle PTSA board member, in an email.
Guest speaker Walker McKnight echoed Persis’ advice and shared how vaping as a teen landed him in the hospital in need of three organ transplants.
McKnight, now 24, said he started vaping in high school as an 18-year-old. Within three months, he said, he was on life support.
After graduating from Winter Park High School, McKnight went to Florida Atlantic University to compete as a cheerleader and volleyball player at the collegiate level. However, at the start of his first year, he came home sick, visited the doctor, and learned he had an infection in his left lung.
McKnight’s dad, David McKnight, said that if his son didn’t have a double lung and kidney transplant, he would not have survived.
“My hope and prayer for all of you is that you realize that there’s dangers involved with doing drugs at all times, especially ones that have not been thoroughly tested and approved,” David McKnight said at the pep rally. “And your body is precious. Your mind is sensitive. And your heart is fragile, so take care of it. Good health is better than all the riches and fame the world has to offer because without your good health, you guys risk losing the life that is yours right now.”
McKnight reinforced his father’s message, assuring students that “vaping really is just no joke.”
“There’s no get back, and … the most important thing is you want to have a healthy body,” he said. “The only reason I survived is because of how healthy I was.”
Local stakeholders also weigh in about the dangers of smoking, vaping
Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington referred to smoking as a “dirty habit” and told students that “it’s not cool,” that “it’s one of the worst things you can possibly do,” and that people who smoke generally do not perform as well in the corporate world.
“One of the leading things that smoking causes: you can’t perform well,” Partington said. “We need you to perform well and stay healthy.”
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood warned students of the “unseen dangers” of vaping and said it can lead to drug addiction and impaired decision-making.
“You really, really have to think about what you’re doing,” Chitwood said. “Is it really, really worth it destroying your future for that? … Just say no. You don’t need it, you don’t need the effects that come with it later in life.”
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — UConn kept its bid to repeat as national champion intact by surviving its first true test of the NCAA Tournament, getting 21 points from freshman Stephon Castle while clamping down defensively in the second half of an 86-72 win over Alabama in the Final Four on Saturday night.
The top-seeded Huskies (36-3) had put on a March Madness show before arriving in the desert, a stretch that included a 30-0 run in a decimation of Illinois in the Elite Eight.
This was more of a slow burn, with UConn withstanding an early wave of 3-pointers before holding the Crimson Tide (25-12) without a field goal during a five-minute second-half stretch.
Next up for the Huskies will be what should be a much more physical test against 7-foot-4, 300-pound Zach Edey and Purdue in Monday’s national championship game. UConn has its own accomplished big man in 7-2 Donovan Clingan, who finished with 18 points and four blocked shots.
“A battle of the giants. I think it’s just great for college basketball. Us and Purdue have clearly been the two best teams in the country the last two years,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “I think it’s just great for college basketball to get the two big dogs playing on Monday.”
Survive that matchup, and UConn will be the first repeat national champion since Florida in 2006-07.
“It feels good, but the job’s not done yet,” Clingan said
The Huskies’ Final Four win certainly wasn’t as easy as the final score indicated.
Alabama held its own in the program’s first Final Four appearance, going toe to toe with a team that trailed 28 total seconds in its first four NCAA Tournament games.
Crafty point guard Mark Sears did his best to keep Alabama in it, scoring 24 points. Grant Nelson had another big game in March Madness, finishing with 19 points, 15 rebounds and one highlight-reel dunk over Clingan.
Even that wasn’t enough against a UConn team that’s among the most efficient at both ends of the floor.
The Huskies spent the tournament’s first two weeks terrorizing opponents to the tune of a 27.8-point average margin of victory.
Alabama stuck a stick in the spokes of the juggernaut by pulling Clingan away from the basket and burying 3-pointers.
Clingan had two early blocks and looked ready to duplicate his Elite Eight performance, when Illinois went 0 for 19 on shots he contested.
Once the Crimson Tide started forcing Clingan into high pick-and-rolls, lanes to the basket starting opening up — as did the 3-point line.
Alabama thrived from 3 all season, taking down Clemson in the Elite Eight by making 16 shots from deep. The Tide kept it rolling against UConn, making 8 of 11 in the first half while Sears repeatedly got to the rim, putting the Huskies seemingly right where they wanted them.
Nope.
The Huskies kept their composure amid the Alabama 3-point barrage, calmly ran their offense and led 44-40 at halftime.
UConn kept rolling in the second half and Nelson kept the Tide within reach. His thunderous dunk over Clingan had Tide coach Nate Oats screaming and squatting like he was doing the Haka.
Oats’ friend Hurley had the last laugh — or scream.
Hurley has built UConn in arguably the best two-way team of a generation, and the Huskies showed off both sides in their closing flourish.
UConn shut down Alabama’s open looks from the 3-point arc and started getting the ball into Clingan, who overpowered the Tide when he got near the rim.
The Huskies gradually stretched the lead, pushed the Tide back every time they made a run and put themselves in position to make history Monday night.
A firefighter responding to an RV crash in Escambia County was attacked by one of the driver’s dogs, according to Florida deputies. The driver was arrested.

A firefighter was attacked by a dog while trying to rescue an 80-year-old woman trapped inside an RV that crashed, Florida authorities said.
Now, the dog owner faces charges.
On April 3, Escambia County first responders arrived at the scene where an RV had run off the road, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The driver said his 80-year-old mom was trapped inside, and his two dogs were inside as well, deputies said. The owner told officials the dogs “were aggressive and would attack if they felt threatened.”
Deputies asked the 47-year-old man to get his dogs out of the RV, and he did so but didn’t keep the dogs on a leash, according to deputies. A firefighter tried to enter the RV to get the woman out when one of the dogs attacked from behind and began to bite him, deputies said.
A deputy shot and killed the dog, authorities said.
Another deputy who arrived on the scene after the shooting found the man “distraught and crying,” according to an arrest report in Escambia County records.
The second dog was leashed, and deputies said they asked the man to tie the dog to a tree. The man wouldn’t listen to commands and placed the dog between himself and law enforcement, according to reports.
A deputy deployed a stun gun, citing fear that the man would release the dog if they tried to take him into custody, deputies said. He was treated at the scene and taken to jail.
The woman trapped inside the RV is in “good health,” deputies wrote in an update, adding that animal control took in the dog.
The man was booked in Escambia County jail on charges of reckless disregard by a dog owner, resisting arrest without violence and hindering the duties of a law enforcement officer. His attorney information is not available in case records.
McClatchy News reached out to Escambia County Fire Rescue to learn the firefighter’s condition but did not immediately receive a response April 4.
Escambia County is the westernmost county of Florida’s Panhandle and borders Alabama.
What to know about dog attacks
“Dogs give us comfort, companionship, exercise, entertainment, and unconditional love,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. “But it’s important to remember that any dog can bite, even trusted family pets.”
Dogs bite more than 4.5 million people each year in the U.S., and nearly 800,000 of those people need medical attention, according to the CDC.
Any dog can bite if they feel scared or nervous, or if they want to be alone. You should never approach a dog that seems angry or scared, the CDC said.
If an unfamiliar dog comes up to you, officials say you should:
Stay calm and be still.
Avoid eye contact with the dog.
Don’t panic or make loud noises. Don’t run.
Say “no” or “go home” in a deep voice. Stand with the side of your body toward the dog.
Slowly raise your hands to your neck and back away slowly.
