Rinderknecht will again appear in court at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, where the topic of bond could be discussed. He is facing federal criminal charges related to the fire. If convicted, Rinderknecht would face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

FOX 35 News will be at the court hearing to provide the latest updates on the investigation.

    What’s next:

Officials said Rinderknecht will be transferred back to the Central District of California to stand trial.

    Who is Jonathan Rinderknecht?

    Dig deeper:

Rinderknecht, also known as “Jonathan Rinder,” and “Jon Rinder,” is originally from Indiana and has a high school diploma.

Investigators said he was previously a resident of Palisades and was familiar with the neighborhood he is accused of starting the fire in. Officials said he later moved to Melbourne, Florida, after starting the fire.

  • Trevor Lawrence’s wild run lifts the Jaguars to a 31-28 over Chiefs

    [ad_1]

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence tripped, got up and scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining — turning a laughable miscue into an improbable score — and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Kansas City 31-28 on Monday night.

The crazy ending halted the Jags’ eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs (2-3).

Lawrence ran for two touchdowns on the night and also threw for a score, helping balance a performance that included two turnovers.

He was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars (4-1). Lawrence dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain. Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence’s trip and score.

Right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on Lawrence’s right foot as he took the snap, and he fell several yards in the backfield. But he got up and somehow found the end zone. It helped that several defenders, including Chris Jones, stopped on the play.

“Sheer panic on the ground,” Lawrence said. “We didn’t have any timeouts. … I was just gonna throw it out of bounds to stop the clock. There was really no one around me. So, went and made a play.”

Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards.

Patrick Mahomes accounted for two touchdowns, and Kareem Hunt ran for two more scores for Kansas City, which had won 23 straight when leading by at least 14 points. The Chiefs took an early 14-0 lead, thanks in part to a fumble by Lawrence at the goal line.

The Jaguars led 21-14 in the third quarter and 24-21 in the fourth before Mahomes rallied the Chiefs.

Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC defensive player of the month for September, returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown in the third. It was the longest interception return by a linebacker in NFL history.

Lloyd’s pick looked like it might be a game-changer. He stepped in front of Mahomes’ pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line and took off the other way for his league-leading fifth takeaway.

He juked Mahomes and Hunt, then got up to full speed along the Jaguars’ sideline. He picked up a block from Josh Hines-Allen and then held the ball tight as Tyquan Thornton tried to knock it loose at the 5-yard line.

Travis Hunter makes a rookie splash

Jaguars two-way standout Travis Hunter made two big-time plays, including the fourth-longest reception by a rookie this season. Hunter hauled in a 44-yarder in the third quarter — and it was no easy catch.

The Heisman Trophy winner jumped and reached over Conner to snare the ball and then held on despite getting his legs wiped out by Bryan Cook. The Jaguars scored four plays later to tie the game at 14-all.

His catch-and-run in the second quarter was nearly as good. He took a short pass in the left flat and juked two defenders en route to a 12-yard gain.

    Key injuries

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy hobbled off the field in the third quarter after appearing to tweak an ankle but returned a few plays later. Worthy had been listed as questionable because he got off the team flight with a swollen ankle. Chiefs rookie LT Josh Simmons played despite being added to the injury report shortly before kickoff with an illness.

Jaguars TE Brenton Strange left the game in the first half with left hip injury and did not return. Jacksonville played without DE Travon Walker, who had surgery last Monday to repair an injured left wrist.

  • Virginia outlasts No. 8 Florida State 46-38 in second overtime

    [ad_1]

    By  MIKE BARBER

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Chandler Morris scored on a 4-yard run in the second overtime and Virginia beat No. 8 Florida State 46-38 on Friday night for its first home victory over a Top 10 team since also beating the Seminoles in 2005.

Morris ran for three scores and had two touchdown passes for the Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). After the go-ahead TD run, he completed a pass to Trell Harris for the 2-point conversion.

Florida State (3-1, 0-1) had a chance to tie, but Duce Robinson bobbled a pass going out the back of the end zone on third down. On fourth-and-12 at the 27, Tommy Castellanos’ heave into the end zone was intercepted by Ja’Son Prevard, with Cavaliers fans instantly storming the field.

Florida State rallied to force overtime, with Castellanos throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Randy Pittman Jr. on a fourth-down play with 32 seconds left. The teams traded field goals in the first overtime.

Robinson caught nine passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, and Castellanos threw for 254 and a score and ran for another 78 yards and a touchdown.

J’Mari Taylor ran for 99 yards and a score as Virginia’s run game ate up the clock in the second half.

Virginia turned a pair of first-quarter takeaways into touchdowns and an early 14-0 lead, but Florida State stormed back to go ahead 21-14 at the half, fueled by two interceptions. The teams were tied at 21 at halftime and 28 after three quarters.

    The takeaway

Florida State’s season opened with such promise when it upset Alabama. But after a pair of blowout wins over lesser opponents, the Seminoles couldn’t start ACC play with a victory.

Virginia picked up the most significant victory for the program since it ended the 2019 regular season with a win over rival Virginia Tech.

  • Nora District’s debut: Old warehouses set to open as new West Palm Beach destination

    [ad_1]

Nora was created by real estate investors who wanted to blend history with modern touches to attract shoppers, diners.

    play

    • The $1 billion project transformed a rundown area north of downtown West Palm into a trendy neighborhood with a mix of old warehouses and new buildings.
    • Retailers, restaurants, and fitness centers are set to open in Nora in phases, with a hotel and apartments planned for the future.
    • The West Palm Beach project gained momentum during the pandemic as businesses and residents relocated to Palm Beach County.

The Nora District, a long-awaited dining, shopping and entertainment neighborhood in West Palm Beach, finally is about to open.

More than seven years in the making, the $1 billion Nora development is the culmination of an ambitious plan by a small group of real estate investors willing to take a chance on a rundown part of the city.

Starting in 2018, these investors began buying up old warehouses, boarded-up properties and vacant sites just north of the downtown. These were the properties in and around North Railroad Avenue facing the Florida East Coast Railway, which was built by industrialist Henry Flagler in the late 1880s.

The investment group envisioned something special: a hip, new neighborhood blending history with modern finishes.

The investors designed the district around North Railroad Avenue, the area’s western boundary and the district’s designated Main Street. Then they named the entire project Nora, short for the avenue’s name. The Nora District is just west of North Dixie Highway between 7th Street and Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.

Nora features buzzy retailers, restaurants in downtown West Palm Beach

Using a mix of old warehouses and new construction, Nora’s partners created ground-floor spaces for buzzy and in-demand retailers. This includes casual and upscale restaurants, activities for families, and a smattering of luxury stores.

Nora also includes the hottest players in boutique fitness centers, plus several beauty retailers and services.

A few of the project’s 20 retailers plan to open in late August and September, while others will open by year-end, and more stores and eateries will open in 2026.

Eventually, people will be able to stay and even live at Nora.

In the fall of 2026, look for the opening of the 201-room Nora Hotel by Richard Born and Ira Drukier of BD Hotels, along with acclaimed hotelier Sean MacPherson.

The Nora Hotel will feature a rooftop pool and bar. It also will feature a signature restaurant, Pastis, the famed New York City Parisian-style brasserie.

Meanwhile, Nora’s developers are seeking approval from the City of West Palm Beach for an 11-story, 350-unit apartment complex along 10th Street at North Railroad Avenue.

In addition, Nora hopes to build an 11-story condominium at 1105 N. Dixie Highway.

If Nora sounds like an overnight sensation, it is not. Backers said the project required timing, creativity, patience − and a large dose of luck.

How a simple plan for West Palm turned big after a global event

The property purchases began around 2018, with a plan by NDT Development to rehabilitate a couple of old warehouses into new restaurant spaces.

But the redevelopment plan grew bigger, and over time, the group bought more and more property. Eventually, NDT joined with Place Projects, an early developer of Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, and Wheelock Street Capital to create the Nora District. The 40-acre district is the city’s largest redevelopment since CityPlace, which opened in 2000.

When the global COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, a surge of companies and residents moved to Palm Beach County from the Northeast.

Soon several Northeast restaurateurs and retailers expressed interest in following their customers to Palm Beach County, said Francis X. Scire, Nora’s leasing director. These include eateries from New York and Boston.

During the past three years, Scire said he’s charted the growing interest, and the caliber, of the companies wanting to be what some consider one of the hottest cities in the country.

“We’re a thriving metropolis and they needed to get a flag down here,” Scire said. “Nora was the best product coming online. It was the obvious choice.”

Coffee, cars and a big bet on the future of the Nora District

Sunday Motor Co. is one example. The coffee shop from Madison, New Jersey, has launched a soft opening in a converted warehouse at 7th Street and North Railroad Avenue, the southern corner of the Nora District.

Sunday Motor is among the first restaurants to open at Nora. With its auto-themed accessories and memorabilia, it promises to be a welcome gathering spot for coffee and car aficionados, non-car lovers and everyone else.

A daytime menu featuring breakfast and lunch items will be offered at first. Then, about a month after opening, Sunday Motor will launch evening service, featuring a different menu as well as beer and wine, according to Nick Vorderman, who owns the coffee shop with his wife, Renee Mee.

The expansion to Florida began in 2023 when the Vorderman family bought a house in West Palm Beach’s Flamingo Park to visit with relatives in Jupiter.

Soon after, the couple began taking a look around West Palm Beach. This was about the same time that Nora’s leasing director was trying to find a coffee shop.

Scire said he wanted the perfect “third place,” a location that isn’t home or work but another setting for gathering. After sifting through 37 possible coffee shops, he settled on Sunday Motor’s creative and welcoming vibe.

In a brief telephone interview on Aug. 13, Nick Vorderman was busy putting the finishing touches on the new Nora location.

But in between the last-minute frenzy, Vordeman said he was looking forward to the shop’s opening. “We’re all very excited,” he said. “It’s been a long road to get to this point.”

Nora’s eight other eateries range across a broad spectrum of cuisine. Several hail from the Northeast, too. Coming from Boston is Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar. From New York, look for H&H Bagels, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Juliana’s Pizza. New York’s The Garret Group also plans a sports bar. Also opening at Nora are Indaco, a restaurant featuring rustic Italian-inspired cuisine; Del Mar Mediterranean; and local operator Celis Juice Bar.

In the beauty and wellness space, Nora will feature Sweat440 and SolidCore fitness facilities; service retailers such as Sana Skin Studio, The Spot Barbershop and IGK Salon hair care; Le Labo Fragrances; and ZenHippo early childhood activities.

Finally, three other retailers also are in the mix. They are Warby Parker eyewear; and two women’s clothing boutiques, Pompanos and Mint.

A new use for old West Palm Beach buildings

In a 2021 interview, back when Nora first was being sketched out, Place Project’s Joe Furst said the land assemblage by NDT was complicated, rare and vital to create an area with thoughtful planning and design.

A lot of times, developers either can rehabilitate old buildings or build new ones in an area, but not both, Furst said.

However, at Nora, rehabbed warehouses complement newly-built places, so “you still have that Main Street feel,” he said.

Indeed, historical flourishes are a part of making it feel authentic, said Damien Barr, a partner in the NDT Development group.

“We were very intentional,” Barr said during a recent tour of Nora.

Visitors to Nora need only look down for proof. Lining the district’s sidewalks are railroad ties, a nod to the nearby railway that first breathed life into the city and continues to inspire new uses for this old part of town.

  • No.7 Florida St. beats Kent State 66-10

    [ad_1]

    By  BOB FERRANTE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Tommy Castellanos passed for 205 yards and had two of No. 7 Florida State’s eight rushing touchdowns in a 66-10 rout of Kent State on Saturday.

Gavin Sawchuk had 11 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns as the Seminoles (3-0) ran for a single-game school record 498 yards and surpassed last season’s win total.

“An extraordinary night offensively, being able to have great balance,” coach Mike Norvell said. ”… It comes down to their work. They’ve made a great investment into each other.”

Florida State had as many rushing touchdowns against Kent State as it did in 12 games in 2024. The Seminoles also had 17 run plays of 10 or more yards.

The Seminoles made improvement on the ground a priority going into 2025, bringing in Gus Malzahn (who was UCF’s coach) to be their offensive coordinator. Beyond landing Castellanos, they added Sawchuk (a transfer from Oklahoma) and four transfer offensive linemen who started on Saturday.

Malzahn has insisted on a physical rush offense and Florida State has delivered, averaging 363 rushing yards per game.

“Those guys up front — they’re big, they’re physical and they move bodies,” Castellanos said.

Castellanos left in the second quarter with an apparent ankle injury, but early in the third quarter he darted from the locker room and ran down the Seminoles’ sideline. With Florida State in front 45-7, Castellanos did not play in the second half.

“Just got rolled up a little bit,” Castellanos said. “All good. 100% still. A little scary but I’m good.”

Micahi Danzy had a 64-yard touchdown run and added receptions of 65 yards and 47 yards. The redshirt freshman now has three touchdowns in three games.

The Golden Flashes’ Dru DeShields completed 9 of 18 passes for 129 yards and had a 75-yard touchdown pass to Da’Shawn Martin.

    The takeaway

Kent State ran for 43 yards on 28 carries and was not able to sustain any drives.

Florida State scored on 10 of its first 11 drives, including nine touchdowns. The Seminoles picked up their second straight rout, following a 77-3 win over FCS program East Texas A&M on Sept. 6.

    Running wild

Florida State now has 1,089 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns through three games. The Seminoles had just 1,079 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in 12 games in 2024.

    Injury notes

Kent State defensive back A’tiq Muhammad was injured late in the second quarter while trying to tackle Amaree Williams. Muhammad was carted off the field.

Florida State starting receiver Squirrel White did not play. White suffered a hand/wrist injury.

    Poll implications

  • Byrum Brown’s 4 TD passes lead USF past South Carolina State 63-14

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Byrum Brown threw four touchdown passes, South Florida scored five touchdowns in the third quarter, and the Bulls blew past FCS-opponent South Carolina State 63-14 on Saturday.

Brown completed 14 of 20 passes for 236 yards, Chas Nimrod caught four passes for 119 yards with two TDs, and Sam Franklin ran for 91 yards with two touchdowns on four carries.

South Carolina State took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards downfield before Mac Harris picked off a pass and returned it 93 yards for a South Florida touchdown. Harris had 10 total tackles, four of them solo, and two sacks.

The Bulls (3-1) led 21-7 at halftime and blew the game open in the third quarter, scoring 35 points, with their defense forcing the Bulldogs to go three-and-out three times in four drives. In the third, Chas Nimrod caught touchdown passes of 42 and 22 yards from Brown, Nykahi Davenport ran 43 yards for a score, Ashton Mosley returned a blocked punt 4 yards for a touchdown and Sam Franklin wrapped up the quarter with a 30-yard touchdown run. Franklin’s 54-yard run midway through the fourth quarter made it 63-14.

The Bulldogs scored on a 1-yard run by Kacy Fields in the second quarter and a 17-yard run by Julian Milligan in the fourth.

William Atkins IV was 18 of 28 passing for 151 yards for the Bulldogs (2-2).

South Florida improved to 29-1 all-time against FCS opponents.

  • Hurricanes ease past Gators 26-7 to move to 4-0

    [ad_1]

    By  TIM REYNOLDS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, Marty Brown rushed for a pair of scores and No. 4 Miami struggled at times before beating Florida 26-7 on Saturday night.

Brown had a 2-yard rush to cap the first drive of the game for Miami (4-0), then had a 1-yard plunge with 4:08 left to seal what became the Hurricanes’ ninth win over the Gators in the teams’ last 11 meetings.

Fletcher scored from 1 yard out with 1:57 left.

Jadan Baugh had a 7-yard touchdown run for Florida (1-3), off to its worst start since 1986. The loss sent embattled coach Billy Napier’s record with the Gators to 20-22, and came on a night where Florida had its fewest total yards in a game in more than 25 years.

The Gators were outgained 344-141 and quarterback D.J. Lagway completed 12 of 23 passes for only 61 yards. It was Florida’s lowest yardage since managing only 119 against Alabama on Dec. 4, 1999.

Miami quarterback Carson Beck completed 17 of 30 passes for 160 yards and an interception. Beck improved to 3-0 all-time against Florida; in the last 25 years, only fellow former Georgia quarterbacks Jake Fromm and Aaron Murray also had three wins over the Gators as starters.

The Hurricanes were fuming after a play early in the third quarter where it appeared Brown — on fourth-and-1 from the Florida 48 — bounced off a pile, kept his legs moving and broke free for what would have been a touchdown and a 19-0 Miami lead with an extra point pending.

Southeastern Conference referee David Smith said Brown’s forward progress was stopped, taking the score off the board, and Miami punted four plays later. The Gators scored on the ensuing drive, and a game where the Hurricanes thought they had gone up by three touchdowns was suddenly a 13-7 contest.

Beck got picked off on the next Miami drive, but the Hurricanes snuffed out that Florida possession by getting a fourth-down stop on the first play of the fourth quarter and holding on to the six-point lead. Florida never got any closer.

    The takeaway

Florida: The Gators had 32 yards of offense on their first six drives, before going 80 yards on the third-quarter possession capped by Baugh’s touchdown run. That extended Florida’s NCAA-record scoring streak, which now is up to 465 games dating back to 1988.

Miami: Even on an off night for the offense, the Hurricanes’ defense showed up yet again. Miami improved to 10-0 at home since the start of last season and has now won seven consecutive games against in-state opponents.

  • No. 5 Miami rolls past No. 18 USF, 49-12

    [ad_1]

    By  TIM REYNOLDS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The last team that started a season with three consecutive wins over AP-ranked opponents was Miami in 1987.

And the Hurricanes made sure that didn’t change.

Carson Beck threw three touchdown passes, Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 5 Miami remained unbeaten with a 49-12 win over No. 18 USF on Saturday.

It was Miami’s biggest victory margin over a ranked opponent since beating Washington 65-7 in 2001, the Hurricanes’ most recent national championship season. And it denied USF (2-1) the chance at a third straight ranked win to start this season, following victories over Boise State and Florida.

“There was a lot of motivation going into this thing, besides the fact that they were a ranked football team because I have a lot of respect for their coaches and their players,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “This was an in-state game. And those games, you have to play your very best.”

The Hurricanes are 6-0 since the start of last season against in-state opponents, winning those games by an average of 34.5 points.

Beck completed 23 of 28 passes for 340 yards and ran for a touchdown for Miami (3-0). Fletcher had a two-TD game for the second consecutive week and Joshua Moore had two first-quarter scoring catches.

“The young man’s lost three games in his college career,” USF coach Alex Golesh said of Beck, a Georgia transfer. “He’s tough. He’s gritty. I thought he was super accurate tonight. … I think that young man’s really, really good.”

Byrum Brown completed 20 of 36 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown for USF. Brown threw an interception late in the first half, ending his school-record streak of 252 passes without being picked off.

Christian Neptune had a 12-yard touchdown catch for the Bulls, who got 128 yards on four catches from Chas Nimrod. USF had four passes go for more than 25 yards, including 53- and 43-yarders to Nimrod.

The game was delayed for 1 hour, 41 minutes in the first half because of severe weather in the area. It ended just shy of five hours after kickoff.

“We certainly didn’t execute like we have been,” Golesh said. “Just didn’t look like us.”

    The takeaway

South Florida: USF led Miami 15-14 with 2 minutes left in the half of their game last year. Miami outscored the Bulls 36-0 the rest of the way in that game — and was up 28-6 with 2 minutes left in the half this year. Add it up, and USF was outscored 64-6 by the Hurricanes over 60 minutes of play.

Miami: The game was essentially sealed when the Hurricanes’ Rueben Bain Jr. stopped Brown on a fourth-and-3 carry from the Miami 9 late in the third quarter, with the hosts leading 28-6. Miami needed only six plays to go 91 yards; Beck had three passes for 64 yards on the drive and Fletcher capped it with a 13-yard TD run.

  • LSU intercepts 5 of DJ Lagway’s passes in 20-10 victory

    [ad_1]

    By  BRETT MARTEL

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Garrett Nussmeier threw for 220 yards and a touchdown, Dashawn Spears returned one of his first two career interceptions 58 yards for a touchdown and No. 3 LSU beat Florida 20-10 on Saturday night.

After the ejection of LSU preseason AP All-America linebacker Whit Weeks for a targeting penalty in the game’s opening minutes, the Tigers (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) intercepted five of Florida quarterback DJ Lagway’s passes and sacked him three times.

Lagway’s career high in interceptions came in what was widely seen as a pivotal bounce-back game for the Gators (1-2, 0-1) and fourth-year coach Billy Napier after a surprising home loss to South Florida a week earlier.

The Gators amped up the intensity more than an hour before kickoff when many of them jogged or walked a lap around the entire field — a route that took them near the tunnel to the LSU locker room.

As Florida players stared down hecklers in the LSU student section, several Tigers players warming up in the area began shouting as well as they advanced toward the Gators. Shoving ensued, and as officials and uniformed officers on the field diffused the standoff, an official threw a “sideline warning” flag.

After kickoff, the game was hard fought, with defenders hitting hard and offensive linemen vigorously finishing blocks — including one by LSU lineman Weston Davis that wiped out Tigers coach Brian Kelly along the sideline. Kelly was uninjured.

    But both offenses stumbled.

LSU, which had starting center Braelen Moore back in the lineup after an ankle injury last week, gained just 96 yards rushing (with 51 coming on a late run by Caden Durham) and punted seven times. Nussmeier also was intercepted on a risky throw back across the middle that infuriated Kelly.

Florida, which punted five times, finished with 366 total yards to LSU’s 316. Lagway finished 33 of 49 for 287 yards and one TD passing.

Nussmeier’s 23-yard scoring pass to Zavion Thomas gave LSU a 10-3 lead in the second quarter.

Florida responded with Lagway’s floating 10-yard pass to Aiden Mizell as he crossed the back of the end zone in tight coverage from Tamarcus Cooley, who disgustedly kicked the ball after the play, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Lagway’s second turnover was AJ Haulcy’s interception that set up Damian Ramos’ 45-yard field goal, giving LSU a 13-10 lead as time expired in the first half.

Spears’ second interception and long return put LSU up 20-10. And after Cooley redeemed himself with an interception of Lagway’s pass in the end zone with less than seven minutes remaining, cornerback DJ Pickett had an interception to end Florida’s final possession.

    The takeaway

Florida: The Gators’ evident intensity and effort was canceled out by turnovers and other mistakes, including an offensive holding call that nullified an 87-yard touchdown pass to Jadan Baugh in the first half.

LSU: The defense has been good enough to compensate for an offense that has been inconsistent and less explosive than expected with the experienced Nussmeier — a preseason Heisman Trophy favorite who passed for 4,052 yards last season — under center.

  • Ramírez passes Thome on Cleveland RBIs list as Guardians beat Rays 2-1

    [ad_1]

    By  KRISTIE ACKERT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — José Ramírez passed Jim Thome to move into sole possession of second place on the Cleveland’s career RBIs list, helping the Guardians to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 Sunday in a game with wild-card race implications.

Ramírez hit a tying triple in the two-run sixth off Garrett Cleavinger (1-5) for his 938th RBI and trails only Earl Averill’s 1,084.

Gabriel Arias had an RBI single later in the inning against Kevin Kelly that scored David Fry, who slid home headfirst just ahead of right fielder Josh Lowe’s throw.

Cleavinger entered to start the sixth with a 20-inning scoreless streak, the active major league high. The run was the first he allowed since July 5.

Cleveland (72-70) won the last three games of the four-game series and moved ahead of the Rays (71-72). Seattle (75-68) leads for the third and final wild card.

The game drew 8,155, the 16th time in 74 home games the Rays did not sell out 10,046-capacity Steinbrenner Field.

Left-hander Parker Messick (2-0), a 24-year-old left-hander making his fourth major league start, allowed one run and eight hits in six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Messick is from Plant City, less than 30 miles away, and was pitching before family and friends .

Rays rookie Carson Williams homered in the fifth on a fastball, ending an 0-for-12 slide.

Cade Smith struck out the side in the ninth for his 11th save in 16 chances.

    Key Moment

Brandon Lowe’s first-inning, two-out fly ball landed on the right-field warning track behind George Valera and Junior Caminero, who started on first, failed to run hard and only reached first. Caminero was stranded when Christopher Morel flied out.

    Key Stat

Rays starter Drew Rasmussen was removed after 82 pitches over five scoreless innings.

  • UCF dominates North Carolina A&T 68-7 in record-setting day

    [ad_1]

    By  PHILIP ROSSMAN-REICH

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — UCF’s Jaden Nixon opened the game with a 92-yard touchdown return and added touchdown runs of 87 and 66 yards as UCF never looked back in a dominant 68-7 victory over North Carolina A&T.

Nixon ran for 156 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. His 87-yard touchdown run was the third-longest in UCF’s history. The Knights also fell five points short of setting the program record for points scored in a game.

“It’s just a determination that everyone else has, and putting it all together,” Nixon said. “It’s a team play. I know after that, everybody was like this is going to be a great game.”

The Knights (2-0) took that opening kickoff and kept on running, steamrolling the Aggies even when many of the team’s reserves came into the game.

Backup quarterback Jacurri Brown took over in the second half and rushed for 106 yards on five carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run.

The Knights’ defense stepped up, too, recording two sacks and forcing three turnovers. That included a strip sack by defensive lineman Nyjalik Kelly that was recovered in the endzone by Rodney Lora.

“Everybody was the strength,” Kelly said. “I feel like collectively the whole defense was the strength tonight.”

UCF outgained North Carolina A&T 560-200 in the game. Shimique Blizzard got the Aggies on the board with a 17-yard touchdown run with three minutes to play.

    QB Shuffle

UCF’s week one starter Cam Fancher was injured in the second quarter of the Knights’ opening game against Jacksonville State last week and was unavailable to play on Saturday.

Tayven Jackson stepped in to lead the Knights to the win last week and continued to make a case to be the starter for the rest of the season.

North Carolina A&T was forced to shuffle its quarterbacks, starting the game with Braxton Thomas before switching to Champ Long after one series. Long was knocked out of the game with an injury in the second quarter, forcing the Aggies to turn to freshman Jy Walls.

Walls finished with 14 yards on 2-for-4 passing in his first taste of college action.

    First time, Long time

Nixon’s opening kickoff return was UCF’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Mike Hughes’ 95-yard return against USF in 2017, a game that helped the Knights clinch an undefeated season. It was the first opening kickoff return for a touchdown for the Knights since Quincy McDuffie’s 95-yard return against Tulane in 2010.

    Delayed Again

The opening kickoff of the game was delayed by a little more than an hour due to lightning. It was the second straight game delayed by weather for UCF after last week’s game against Jacksonville State was paused for more than two hours.

    The Takeaway

North Carolina A&T: North Carolina A&T continued to struggle to find its footing after a tough loss last Tennessee State. The Aggies have now lost 12 straight games and 23 of their last 25.

UCF: The Knights got back to their big-play offense with five touchdown scores of 20 or more yards.

    Up Next

UCF has a bye week next before hosting North Carolina on Sept. 20. North Carolina A&T plays its home opener next week against Hampton.

  • No. 14 Florida State scores on 10 straight drives in 77-3 rout of East Texas A&M

    [ad_1]

    By  BOB FERRANTE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Tommy Castellanos passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Duce Robinson, as No. 14 Florida State routed East Texas A&M 77-3 on Saturday.

FSU (2-0) scored on 10 straight drives to open the game and finished with its most points in the Mike Norvell era. The Seminoles’ six passing TDs is their most in a game since 2011.

Gavin Sawchuk had three touchdowns, including a 53-yard catch-and-run on fourth down that was his first career receiving TD. The Oklahoma transfer also had a pair of 1-yard scoring runs as the Seminoles piled up 361 rushing yards, averaging 7.1 yards per carry.

Coming off an upset of then-No. 14 Alabama in the opener, coach Mike Norvell wanted to see how the Seminoles responded.

“I thought they truly came with a purpose and a passion to get better,” Norvell said. “I wanted to see their response and to go compete as a team that’s passionate to get better.”

Robinson had four catches for 160 yards in the first 15 minutes, the most receiving yards by a Florida State player in a quarter in program history. The Southern Cal transfer finished with five catches for 173 yards and two scores, including an impressive one-handed snag.

Castellanos, a Boston College transfer, guided Florida State’s first six touchdown drives. Freshman backup Kevin Sperry had a pair of touchdown passes, including Amaree Williams’ 35-yard catch-and-run. Williams’ touchdown catch came in the third quarter, and a few minutes later the tight end / defensive end recorded his first college sack.

Earl Little Jr. and Jerry Wilson each had interceptions in the first half that led to Florida State touchdowns.

    Playing for Pritchard

The Seminoles were playing with heavy hearts after freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard was shot on Sunday night in Havana, Fla. Florida State players honored him by wearing sweatbands with his No. 35 jersey number, and Little Jr. brought Pritchard’s No. 35 jersey to midfield for the pregame coin toss.

“It’s something that made us go out there and play for him today,” Castellanos said. “His dad was with us on the sideline and in the locker room. We’re praying for Ethan. We wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully God upstairs gives him a second chance at life.”

Pritchard is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.

    Poll implications

Florida State opened the season unranked and isn’t likely to move up from No. 14 unless an upset or two creates a spot.

    The takeaway

Florida State: The Seminoles dominated from the start through the air and on the ground. They were on pace to surpass the school record of 80 points before they backed off in the fourth quarter.

East Texas A&M: The Lions (0-2) punted seven times and couldn’t generate much offense, averaging just 2.9 yards per carry.

    Up next

Florida State: Has a bye. The Seminoles next host Kent State on Sept. 20.

East Texas A&M: Has a bye. The Lions next play at Grambling on Sept. 20.

  • No. 10 Miami digs in late, tops No. 6 Notre Dame 27-24 in a thriller

    [ad_1]

    By  TIM REYNOLDS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami hadn’t beaten a top-10 team in nearly eight years. The opponent that night was Notre Dame.

It happened again Sunday night — and once again, at Notre Dame’s expense.

Carter Davis made a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 left for the go-ahead score, Carson Beck threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his Miami debut, and the 10th-ranked Hurricanes beat the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish 27-24 in the opener for both teams.

“It’s just an unbelievable night,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said after the Hurricanes snapped an eight-game slide against top-10 opponents. “Unbelievable night for so many people that poured so much into this.”

CJ Daniels made a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab and Rueben Bain had an interception on a thrice-deflected pass in the fourth quarter for the Hurricanes, who outgained Notre Dame 324 yards to 314. Malachi Toney had a touchdown catch and Marty Brown added a TD run for Miami.

CJ Carr, in his first start for Notre Dame, finished 19 of 30 for 221 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception — plus a rushing score with 3:21 left that tied the game, capping a rally from 14 points down. Micah Gilbert and Jordan Faison had the scoring grabs for the Irish.

“The effort was there,” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said.

Miami went 46 yards on 10 plays on the ensuing drive, with Davis — a transfer from FAU — delivering for the lead. Notre Dame got the ball at its own 25, out of timeouts, and went nowhere before time expired.

“Gosh, I was nervous.” Beck said. “But we got it done.”

Miami won the coin toss and deferred, which proved relevant — since the Hurricanes essentially ran out the clock on the first half with a 75-yard TD drive, then started the second half with another 75-yard TD march.

Carr’s first collegiate touchdown pass came on a play where he dropped back, zigging and zagging to avoid pressure, then ran back toward the line before finding Gilbert for what became a rather easy score that tied the game at 7-7.

Nearly an hour passed in real time before Carr threw another ball, as Miami essentially had back-to-back possessions separated only by an Irish kneel-down to end the half.

Daniels’ 20-yard grab came with 12 seconds left before halftime to give Miami a 14-7 lead, and the Hurricanes chewed up half of the third-quarter clock on another 75-yard drive capped by Brown’s 5-yard run.

The 14-point lead didn’t last, but Davis delivered and then Bain and Akheem Mesidor combined for sacks on the final two snaps as Miami’s defense closed it out.

“It was a top-10 fight,” Freeman said. “It came down to a three-point game against a hell of a football team.”

    The takeaway

Notre Dame: The Irish became the fourth team that was ranked in the top eight of the preseason AP Top 25 to lose this weekend, after No. 1 Texas (to No. 3 Ohio State), No. 4 Clemson (to No. 9 LSU) and No. 8 Alabama (to Florida State). They’ve now lost seven consecutive road games against the Hurricanes since 1977.

Miami: Beck is the seventh consecutive quarterback to win his Miami starting debut, following D’Eriq King, Tyler Van Dyke, Jake Garcia, Jacurri Brown, Emory Williams and Cam Ward. Expect Miami to gain a few spots in the AP Top 25.

    Up next

Notre Dame: Hosts Texas A&M on Sept. 13.

    Miami: Hosts Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.

  • Lagway leads Florida to a 55-0 victory over Long Island

    [ad_1]

    BY  MARK LONG

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — DJ Lagway threw three touchdown passes, Jadan Baugh ran for 104 yards and a score, and No. 15 Florida opened the season with a 55-0 drubbing of Long Island on Saturday night.

The Gators ended their first eight drives with either a field-goal attempt or an extra point. More than anything, though, facing an overmatched team from the Football Championship Subdivision provided coach Billy Napier with a chance to get Lagway live repetitions for the first time since a December bowl game.

“That was his first scrimmage, if you think about it,” Napier said. “He’ll get his rhythm. He’ll continue to get better. I thought you saw him get better as he kind of got comfortable and settled in.”

Lagway missed months of work following core-muscle surgery, a sore throwing shoulder and, most recently, a strained left calf. He was cleared to fully practice last week and looked a little rusty against the Sharks.

He was sacked on Florida’s first play and threw two errant passes early. But he settled down and showed plenty of promise in the rout.

“It felt great to be back out there,” Lagway said. “Felt like, just as a group, it was very sloppy. I feel like we weren’t playing our brand of football.”

The sophomore completed 15 of 18 passes for 120 yards, with TD passes to Eugene Wilson IIIHayden Hansen and J. Michael Sturdivant.

Lagway’s night ended at halftime, with the Gators leading 38-0. The score would have been more lopsided, but Trey Smack missed two field goals and Florida failed to convert four third downs.

Long Island never came close to scoring. The Sharks managed two first downs and finished with more penalty yards (100) than total yards (86).

“Reality is that’s what it should look like,” Napier said.

    Poll implications

The Gators should hold steady in next week’s AP Top 25 poll even though No. 1 Texas and No. 8 Alabama lost on the road.

    The takeaway

LIU: The Sharks will get $525,000 for making the trip, a hefty payday that will help fund the entire athletic program.

Florida: Freshman Vernell Brown III flashed. He caught three passes for 79 yards, including a backpedaling, high-pointing, one-handed catch. Brown became the third true freshman in school history to start an opener, joining Percy Harvin (2006) and Antonio Callaway (2015).

    Key injuries

Florida was without a handful of potential starters, including defensive tackle Caleb Banks, linebacker Grayson “Pup” Howard and receivers Dallas Wilson and Aidan Mizell.

    Billy Donovan honored

Former Florida basketball coach and current Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan was recognized at the end of the first quarter in advance of his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The packed Swamp delivered a standing ovation for Donovan, who guided the Gators to consecutive national titles in 2006 and 2007 during his 19 years in Gainesville,

Donovan will be enshrined with the 2025 class next week in Springfield, Massachusetts.

    Up next

LIU plays at Eastern Michigan next Saturday, opening with consecutive Football Bowl Subdivision teams for the first time since 2021.

Florida hosts South Florida next Saturday. The Bulls beat No. 25 Boise State in their opener.

  • FSU stuns No. 8 Alabama 31-17

    [ad_1]

    By  BOB FERRANTE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — New quarterback Tommy Castellanos led a punishing rushing attack for Florida State with 78 yards and a touchdown as the Seminoles stunned No. 8 Alabama 31-17 on Saturday, ending the Crimson Tide’s streak of 23 straight wins in season openers.

Coming off a 2-10 season, Florida State handed a crushing setback to Alabama, which was viewed as a College Football Playoff contender under second-year coach Kalen DeBoer.

Students and fans swarmed the field at Doak Campbell Stadium to celebrate the upset by the Seminoles, who were 13 1/2-point underdogs according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

Under new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn — who spent eight seasons as Auburn’s head coach — Florida State was physical from the start, finishing with 230 rushing yards and averaging 4.7 yards per carry. The Seminoles averaged just 89.9 yards during their disastrous 2024 season.

The Crimson Tide had not dropped a season opener since losing 20-17 to UCLA in 2001 under Dennis Franchione, and this defeat will ratchet up the pressure on DeBoer from the demanding Tuscaloosa faithful. His predecessor, Nick Saban, led Alabama to six national titles.

DeBoer fell to 6-4 against unranked teams at Alabama; Saban went 124-4 in such games.

Alabama couldn’t solve Florida State’s defense, finishing with 87 rushing yards on 29 carries. Florida State halted Alabama three times on fourth down, the final time coming with 5:39 to go.

Castellanos, a Boston College transfer, had 16 carries while no one else had more than seven rushing attempts for the Seminoles. He also completed 9 of 14 passes for 152 yards as Florida State defeated its first ranked opponent since knocking off No. 19 Louisville in the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

Micahi Danzy, Caziah Holmes and Gavin Sawchuk also had rushing touchdowns for Florida State.

Ty Simpson completed 23 of 43 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns in his Alabama debut. Germie Bernard led Alabama with eight catches for 146 yards.

    The takeaway

Alabama: The Crimson Tide scored on an opening drive that went 8 minutes, 50 seconds, but struggled to sustain drives the rest of the afternoon.

Florida State: The Seminoles bounced back on a big stage as coach Mike Norvell began his sixth season by picking up a fifth win over a Southeastern Conference team.
