  • This TikTok-Favorite Makeup Product Is the Secret to Faking Wide-Awake Eyes

This TikTok-Favorite Makeup Product Is the Secret to Faking Wide-Awake Eyes

Pros: Water-resistant, 24-hour wear and ergonomic applicator

Cons: Not good for use on the waterline

This liquid eyeliner was modeled after inky, felt-tip pens. As such, it delivers smooth, even, and highly pigmented color in a vegan and cruelty-free formula. It also boasts water and smudge resistance. That’s impressive.

Promising review: “Absolutely noooo eyeliners stay intact on my eyelids….they bleed onto my eyelids all the time, even waterproof. Finally, this one stays intact all through the day, and evening! Plus, it’s very easy to apply. Definitely recommend, just perfect.” — Sephora customer

  • I’ve tried hundreds of eyeliners as a beauty editor and nothing beats the £3 fave I found aged 14

I’ve tried hundreds of eyeliners as a beauty editor and nothing beats the £3 fave I found aged 14

A definite perk of the job when you’re a beauty editor is getting to try endless products. It never gets old, although honestly, it can make you a little fickle. I’ve leap-frogged through foundations, moisturisers, mascaras and brow pencils. But one product I’ve never strayed away from, is the £3 liquid eyeliner I picked up in Boots when I was a teen.

From then on, winged liner became my default and in the (many) years since, I’ve perfected a trusty quick cat-eye that brings me more beauty compliments than any other hair or makeup flex.

Many other liquid eyeliners have passed my desk over the decade I’ve been doing my job, but no matter how bougie, hyped, celeb-endorsed or TikTok-approved they’ve been, I’ve never been swayed.

So, let me tell you about my OG favourite and why I love it. Collection’s Fast Stroke Eyeliner is a game-changer for the slickest flicks. Rather than the felt-tip format that many other liquid liners take, this features more of an ink pot and quill solution. The weighted lid helps to effortlessly guide the liner up, across and around the contours of your lash line, then out for a crisp wing. And, since you’re able to dip the brush in and out of the pot, you have much more control over how loaded it is and – like a mascara wand – you can decant the excess off on the neck of the pot, to tailor how much you apply.

The nib offers unmatched precision and it’s less flexible than others I’ve found, so it won’t bend and splay, which is the death knell for non-bulky lines. So, if you’ve found you’ve never really been able to get on with the felt tip liners (I count myself one of those people), it offers a more manageable option, at least for my skill set.

The pigment is a deep, carbon black that gives stunning definition and we haven’t even got to one of the best bits yet – the price tag. For less than £3, Fast Stroke easily stands up against some of the most expensive and high-profile liquid liners I’ve tried.

    Collection Fast Stroke Eyeliner

So, yep, others have tried, but none have surpassed my beloved Fast Stroke.

  • A Global Artistry Director Told Me Her Best Tricks for A+ Eyeliner

A Global Artistry Director Told Me Her Best Tricks for A+ Eyeliner

I reached out to Sarah Tanno, the global artistry director of Haus Labs, for the scoop on everything you need know about eyeliner pencils. As expected, she not only spilled her personal product preferences but also gave us some helpful guidance on how to go about selecting the right products. “I like eyeliners that have a liquid-like texture that don’t dry too fast, but when it does dry, won’t smudge or move out of place when set,” says Tanno. “The formula is very important when it comes to finding a long-wearing, non-irritating eyeliner.” Her go-to pick is Haus Labs’ Optic Intensity Eco Eyeliner ($22).

Its formula is clean, vegan, and cruelty-free in addition to being waterproof and safe to use on sensitive eyes. “I love that there’s a brush on one end so you can really create the perfect line with precision,” she says of the product. It’s available in matte and shimmer finishes across 13 shades, and Tanno shared her favorites: Black Onyx Matte because it produces bold pigment while being gentle on the waterline, White Onyx Matte to brighten the eyes when applied to the waterline, and Deep Coco Matte because, “not only is it a gorgeous rich brown for the eyes, [but] it also makes a great lip liner!” Discovering a multipurpose product makes it that much better.

  • 13 Eyeliners Editors and Makeup Artists Never Shut Up About

13 Eyeliners Editors and Makeup Artists Never Shut Up About

Although there are a variety of eyeliners out there, most people stick to pencil or liquid. Celebrity makeup artist J Guerra shares his thoughts on the two. “Pencil eyeliners are versatile, simple to use, and more forgiving than liquid eyeliners,” he says. “Cleaning up any mistakes is much less drama. Pencils are also less of a commitment, as they tend to have a less permanent wear time. This makes them a great option for changing looks throughout the day, on a photo shoot, or going from a day to night look in real life.”

There are other benefits to pencil eyeliner, Guerra says. “The soft, malleable, kohl texture [of a pencil liner] is excellent for creating a more blended, smudged, or worn-in eyeliner effect,” he says. “Just be sure to choose one that is long-wearing or waterproof so that it sets and lasts all day after smudging it into place. Pencil liners are also better options for sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers. The formulas of liquid liners may irritate sensitive eyes. The liquid texture can slip into or past the waterline during application and end up on contact lenses. Be careful to read pencil liner descriptions, as not all are approved for waterline use! Some formulas may irritate the eyes, particularly if the pencils include sparkles or shimmer. Some dyes may also be harmful to the waterline. Use the sharpened point of the pencil for precise and defined lines, or try using the side for a thicker line and smudgy finish.”

Guerra also has a few other notes on liquid liners. “Liquid eyeliner is long-lasting, delivers more definition, and creates a bolder, sharper line,” he says. It’s best suited for creating precise and defined lines, making it an excellent choice for sleek or more modernized dramatic eye looks. They offer greater control and accuracy, making it easier to create sharp lines, intricate designs, and precise detailing. Liquid eyeliners are often highly pigmented formulas that provide a more intense color payoff [compared] to the softness of pencils. The color payoff of these hues and bolder, more vibrant lines serve as a statement all on their own.”

Liquid eyeliner is better suited for oily eyelids since the wearability is stronger and won’t break down as easily as pencils,” Guerra says. “It’s also more suitable for hooded eye shapes since most liquid liners are transfer-resistant after they dry down and set. Remember to allow liquid eyeliner sufficient time to dry before blinking or opening your eyes fully (definitely don’t sneeze!) to prevent transfer or smudging. Liquid liners do require a bit more practice and patience than pencils! Most liquid liners are not meant to be used in the waterline, so if that’s part of the look, be sure to opt for a pencil liner in that area instead.”

  • This Season’s Moody Makeup Delivers Glamour With Bite

This Season’s Moody Makeup Delivers Glamour With Bite

When the vampires are played by Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie—chiseled features, haute froideur—it’s hard not to side with the bloodthirsty. The Hunger, Tony Scott’s 1983 directorial debut, opens in a New York nightclub, as Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy sings the propulsive “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” The lovers select their prey: a sunglasses-at-night guy and a redhead with slashes of eyeliner and crimson lips. She dances, unaware that she exits the film in six minutes flat.

A speed-walking cast of models made a similarly fleeting appearance at Marc Jacobs’s fall 2023 show. The designer’s ode to the ’80s manifested as bleached wigs, cropped black stockings, a striped suit fit for Beetlejuice. But it was the drained faces and brusque red mouths, together with show notes credited to OpenAI and ChatGPT, that brought The Hunger to mind—as if updating the plot for an era of vampire electronics. “We wanted a futuristic vibe, so that’s why we went for that gaunt look,” says makeup artist Diane Kendal, who hollowed models’ eye sockets with gray shadows. (Her inspiration was 1982’s Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, Tony’s brother.) Kendal did dab highlighter on the cheekbones, nose, and tear ducts—“because you still want the girls to look beautiful, even though it’s not the most beautiful makeup.”

That impulse to veer into darkness is the order of the day, from Wednesday (slated for a poststrike return) to Olivia Rodrigo’s music video for “Vampire.” The lyrics lambast an ex (“bloodsucker, fame fucker”), and Rodrigo has bite, her oxblood lipstick offset by ethereal, glossy lids. Makeup artist Kathy Jeung wanted the pop star “to look powerful and vulnerable at the same time,” she explains. The “spidery, clumpy lashes” were Rodrigo’s idea, like tears hardened into spiky resolve.

Bakeup Beauty’s amped-up mascara, Tarantulash, creates exactly that effect. “I didn’t want it to be like ‘voluminous, feathery’ bullshit,” says cofounder and makeup artist Jo Baker, referring to the usual puffed-up marketing names. Hers is to the point. She teased it months ahead of launch, posting a photo of an orange-and-black tarantula alongside her two-tone Critics Choice makeup look for Natasha Lyonne. “This is not for the fainthearted,” Baker says of the fast-build formula that lasts. “I could be caught in the rain. I can have a full emotional meltdown, which, let’s be honest, can happen to any of us.”

That was unexpectedly the case for at least one damp-eyed guest at Rodarte’s fall 2023 show, where Tori Amos’s “Winter” accompanied the fantastically gloomy procession. (“Hair is gray and the fires are burning,” Amos soothsays from 1992.) Witchy liner, pictured above, set the mood, seen first with a suite of neo-Morticia black dresses. “We kept pushing it with early punk references and gothic fairy notes,” says James Kaliardos of the eyeliner shapes, which he sketched with a brow pencil for symmetry before inking with Nars’s Climax. “Though it’s hard to do, I know a lot of girls that want to rock this look.” Even that severe beauty statement found fanciful counterpoints: in Rodarte’s metallic fringe dresses and nearby tables set with glitter-covered feasts. The future, however uncertain, shines bright.

  • How to Apply Liquid Liner Like a Makeup Artist (Yes, It’s Easier Than You Think)

How to Apply Liquid Liner Like a Makeup Artist (Yes, It’s Easier Than You Think)

One of the best things makeup beginners can do to level up their makeup skills is to simplify their method of application. A flawless freehanded wing comes with time and experience. If you ask any makeup artist or editor, one of the biggest tips you’ll here is to forget the wrist. Use your pinky for stabilization and let your applicator glide smoothly and steadily across the skin to avoid shaky application or rogue pen marks. If you’ve ever had the experience of attempting literally anything in a time crunch, then you know how complicated simple tasks can feel.

Approach applying liquid eyeliner the same way and make it as easy as possible for yourself. If you make a mistake, no worries! Have some makeup remover on hand and try again. Making mistakes will always be part of the process of learning something new, so why should using liquid eyeliner be any different? If you can’t get that perfect flick on the end of your wing, simply dip a flat makeup brush into some oil-based makeup remover and gently remove your little oops.

Alternately, if you have on a full face and are worried about completely decimating your base makeup, try camouflaging your mistake with concealer for a quick and painless clean-up. It will save you from having to remove all your makeup and start from scratch. If you’re struggling to get the brush saturated with ink, consider storing your eyeliner with the brush facing downward.

  • Sharp Eyeliner Looks Are In, and We’re Using These 16 Liquid Eyeliners To Create

Sharp Eyeliner Looks Are In, and We’re Using These 16 Liquid Eyeliners To Create

I’m a firm believer that selecting and using the right liquid eyeliner can either make or completely decimate your finished makeup look. Realistically, there’s not one ‘right’ way to wear or use it, but isn’t it a good idea to understand the products you’re considering using before they make it on your skin? In the case of liquid eyeliner, there are two main factors that ultimately determine their impact: formulas and applicators. Most of the products you’ll see below feature a flexible, easy-to-control tip that distributes color evenly and smoothly onto the skin (with no uncomfortable tugging).

The best liquid eyeliners on the market will withstand the test of time and look as good a full day into wearing them as they did when first applied while (with no re-application required), yet easy to remove when the time comes. When I’m on the hunt for a liquid eyeliner, I keep any eye out for nourishing ingredients that hydrates the skin; making for a smooth finish and surface for future liquid eyeliner applications.

To make your selection process that much easier, I’ve also categorized them based on their best qualities supplemented by honest pros and cons. Ready to see which ones made the list? Read on!

  • I Tried Tons of Brown Eyeliners to Bring You the Very Best 10

I Tried Tons of Brown Eyeliners to Bring You the Very Best 10

Much like black, brown eyeliner can be applied in a number of different ways. I personally love using a brown pencil or crayon for tight-lining my eyes. I angle the pencil upwards and apply it right into my lash line which helps to add subtle definition and creates the illusion of fuller lashes without it looking like I have any eyeliner on. If you’ve previously found black eyeliner over-powering, but tight-lining with a brown liner has a totally different result which you’ll probably find more flattering.

“The great thing about brown eyeliner is that you don’t have to be too neat and if you want a smoky, smudgy look you can just use a pencil brush to blend,” says Clarkson. She also recommends tight-lining to start with, but for a bolder look she suggests dragging the brown liner into a wing whilst keeping your eyes open to add some extra shape. “If you feel like it adds too much product, instead of applying directly with the pencil, put a generous amount onto the back of your hand and use a small angled brush to apply along the lash line, building it up to your perfect amount.”

Of course, brown eyeliners also come in felt tip pen applicators, which can be used for a more traditional thick line or cat-eye wing. Although this does require a steady hand (and cotton buds to clean up any mistakes!), any error in the shape will be much less noticeable than a black eyeliner would be. Plus, the overall effect will be more subtle.

  • These 15 Eyeliners Will Look Incredible on Your Waterline—They’re All Under $32

These 15 Eyeliners Will Look Incredible on Your Waterline—They’re All Under $32

Finding the best eyeliner to use on the waterline may look like a daunting task to the untrained eye, but is much easier when you know what you’re looking for. If you want your eyeliner to last all day after applying it to the waterline, weed out the ones that aren’t waterproof of smudge proof (after all, it is called the waterline). It may also be worth considering eyeliners formulated from a gel or kohl as opposed to products marketed as a liquid pen since the waterline, like the rest of the skin around the eye, is sensitive and delicate. To ensure the waterline is getting the best possible treatment, use eyeliners with nourishing, skin-loving ingredients such as aloe vera extract, avocado oil, and ceramides.

I’ve taken it upon myself to try a number of eyeliners on the waterline that meet each of the aforementioned qualities allowing for long lasting eye makeup looks that won’t risk any unneeded tears. Interested in seeing which ones I’ll always recommend? Below are 15 of the best ones on the market that are easy on the waterline, long lasting, and generally check all my boxes. You’re welcome in advance!

  • Almond-Shaped Eyes? 10 Game-Changing Tips Celeb Makeup Artists Want You to Know

Almond-Shaped Eyes? 10 Game-Changing Tips Celeb Makeup Artists Want You to Know

As versatile as almond-shaped eyes are, embracing your natural shape can truly make them stand out. “I personally believe each eye will bring out the most flattering and natural shape of each eye on its own,” begins Baker. “Some eyes work particularly well with eyeliner and the feline look. And some are rounder, where I go for the more Dolly look. Each eye almost takes me to a different look.” For example, when working with clients like Olivia Wilde, Baker goes for a smoldering feline definition, but when working with a round shape, she goes for more of a romantic makeup look. No matter the eye shape, your makeup look is what you make of it.

  • Only Eyeliner Experts Know These 3 Application Techniques

Only Eyeliner Experts Know These 3 Application Techniques

    Photo:

The first thing you have to know is how to create the most flattering shape for your eyes. According to Mellinger, the fold of your eye is what determines that. “Those with a hooded eye may need a thicker wing in order to see the line when the eye is open,” For those with a heavy fold, you may need to create a sort of “bat wing” shape in order for the liner to look complete with an open eye. If your eyes are particularly small, you really only want to apply the liner on the outer half of the eye, maybe just the outer third. This will make the eye appear more open.

DeRoest agrees, saying smaller eyes can benefit from only applying eyeliner to the top lash line. Large eyes can benefit from liner on top and bottom lash lines. “If your eyes are narrow, you will only want to add liner to the outer half and extend the line to create more length on the outer edges,” she explains. “If you have almond eyes, most eyeliner shapes, and looks will be complimentary.”

No matter which style of liner is most flattering for your eye shape, feel free to mix it up. After all, it’s just makeup, and makeup should feel fun and expressive. “At the end of the day, I think liner shapes and looks are more about personal style and preference as well—not one shape or look is ‘wrong,” DeRoest says. “It’s more about what makes you feel confident.  I like to play with makeup looks before I shower in the morning, that way I can discover new shapes or effects, and if I don’t like it, luckily, I am showering immediately. If I do like it, I can recreate it for my makeup look that day.”

I’m a Makeup Novice, so I Had a Professional Give Me Tips—See the Results

How long have you been a makeup artist? And what do you love about makeup?

I’ve been a makeup artist for over 10 years. What I love about my career is being able to create, transform, play with color, textures, shapes, styles, get out the rules or norms, and also sometimes innovate by creating trends. Being able to travel and work alongside other artists has also been amazing. I’ve done so many things that only reaffirm my love for makeup.

What’s the number one tip you’d give to a novice when it comes to makeup?

My number one advice I always give is don’t be afraid of experimenting. Makeup is a lot of trial and error. Whether you’re a professional or just a makeup enthusiast, I always say that you have to go through everything. After you have tried it all, then it’s easy to define your niche. This also goes for your signature look. We all have one, but before you commit to a forever red lip or black liner, try a smoky eye, a colorful look, a pink lip, or whatever is calling you to try.

7 Iconic Eyeliners and the 7 Affordable Dupes You’ll Love Even More

Eyeliners fall into that annoying category of beauty products that seem like they should only cost $5 but typically manage to run us upward of $15, $20, even $30. Uh, not cool! Previously, we’ve grinned, purchased, and born it, but what if we were to tell you this little place called the drugstore plays home to formulas that are identical to, if not better than, some of the best eyeliners in the business?

Now, we love our Stilas, Laura Merciers, Bobbi Brows, and Kat Von Ds just as much as anyone, but when you have bills to pay, Postmates to order, and highly salted overpriced margaritas to sip, your enthusiasm for extremely expensive eyeliners starts to wane. Thus, in the spirit of saving money without sacrificing our perfectly eyelined prerogative, we set out to find the seven best dupes to match the seven best eyeliners. • Dull Eye Pencils Are the Worst—We Found the Best Sharpeners With Rave Reviews

Dull Eye Pencils Are the Worst—We Found the Best Sharpeners With Rave Reviews

We’re pretty eyeliner obsessed—from the best waterproof liners to drugstore pencils, no liner goes underappreciated around here. But even the best pencils eventually go dull. And anyone who has ever ruined one of their favorites knows that when it comes to eye pencil sharpeners, there is definitely a class above the rest. Not only will a great sharpener keep your pencil pointy and precise, but it also reveals a fresh layer of product, which can help reduce the spread of bacteria.

According to celebrity makeup artist Allie Renee, a great eye pencil sharpener is an unsung hero in your tool kit. “Cosmetic pencil sharpeners are the most sanitary and efficient way to keep your products performing at their best,” she says.

So what separates the good sharpeners from the great ones? I’m glad you asked. “Because pencils come in many shapes and sizes, I like to have a sharpener with two size options,” Renee says. “A sharp blade is a must, too! I also look for something with a housing that can be removed or opened so I can clean it.”

Better yet, even prestige sharpeners tend to be fairly inexpensive. You only have to spend a few dollars for a tool that will last years and that will keep your eye, lip, and brow pencils in fighting form.

Simply put, says the makeup pro, “It’s a must-have in your beauty collection, even if you rarely ever think about it.” If you’re in need of an upgrade, keep scrolling for 10 of the very best eye pencil sharpeners, plus pencils to pair them with.

  • 5 Makeup Tips to Know About If You’re Trying to Disguise Tired Eyes

5 Makeup Tips to Know About If You’re Trying to Disguise Tired Eyes

I am no makeup whiz. Trust me. I can’t do winged liner (despite years of trying), I have no idea how to contour like people on TikTok do, and any attempt at lining my lips is guaranteed to end badly. Truthfully, my lack of artistic ability is probably the reason I like to keep my makeup natural-looking and as quick and easy a possible.

There is, however, one makeup technique I consider myself a master at, and that’s my ability to brighten up my constantly tired eyes. My incessant dark circles, puffy eyes, and persistent under-eye bags mean that I’ve become somewhat of an expert in disguising tired eyes. I have absorbed every tip and trick that I have received throughout my eights years as a beauty journalist from makeup artists and learned how to achieve a look that hides every hint of tired eyes. So without further ado, this is everything you need to know about how to use makeup for tired eyes.
