The Detroit Tigers have officially ended their playoff drought, clinching a spot in the MLB Playoffs for the first time in a decade. On a memorable Friday night at Comerica Park, the Tigersdefeated the Chicago White Sox 4-1, sending their fans into a frenzy.
Why It Matters
The last time the Detroit Tigers were in the postseason, it was 2014, and fans have been eagerly waiting for their beloved team to return. This milestone not only marks the end of a long playoff drought but also signifies a turning point for the franchise. After years of rebuilding, ups and downs, and doubts about the team’s future, the Tigers have proven that they are ready to compete with the best in the league once again.
A Season of Surprises for the Detroit Tigers
On August 11, the Detroit Tigers had just a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs, according to projections. At that point, it seemed nearly impossible that Detroit could mount a comeback and make a push for October baseball. However, this team defied the odds. Going on an impressive 31-11 run to close out the season, the Tigers played some of their best baseball when it mattered most. Their resilience, strong pitching performances, and timely hitting have brought them to this exciting moment.
Friday night’s win at a packed Comerica Park was the final step in their journey to the playoffs. With their magic number at one, the Tigers took care of business against the White Sox. Led by clutch pitching, steady defense, and bats that came alive when it counted, the team pulled off a 4-1 victory to send Detroit back to the playoffs.
Skubal Can Rest for the Playoffs
One of the key benefits of clinching the playoff spot now is that it allows the Detroit Tigers to make strategic decisions heading into the postseason. With their place secured, the team can rest some of their key players, including starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. Originally set to pitch in Sunday’s regular season finale, Skubal will now be able to rest and prepare for the playoffs, rather than having to pitch in a game that is no longer crucial.
Skubal has been a key player in the Tigers’ late-season surge, providing solid starts and giving the team much-needed confidence. His rest will be critical for the Tigers’ postseason rotation, allowing him to be fresh and ready to lead the team on the mound.
The Detroit Tigers Are Playoff Bound!!!
This season has been about more than just making the playoffs for the Detroit Tigers—it’s about rewriting the narrative. This team has brought new life to a franchise that had been struggling for years. Through a mix of young talent, strong veteran leadership, and consistent performances, the Tigers have proven they are ready to make noise in the playoffs. The Detroit faithful, who packed Comerica Park on Friday night, are now hopeful for a deep playoff run and the opportunity to see their team contend for a World Series title. Buckle up, Tigers fans—October baseball is back in the Motor City!
The Detroit Tigers have had a season to remember, with two of their brightest stars making a huge impact in 2024. Tarik Skubal and Riley Greene have emerged as the team’s top talents, and they’ve both been recognized on a national level. Jim Bowden of The Athleticrecently released his ‘MLB’s Top 20 Breakout Players in 2024′ list, and it features not one, but two Tigers. Skubal tops the list at No. 1, while Greene makes an impressive showing at No. 4.
1. Tarik Skubal, LHP, Tigers
WAR: 6.1
Skubal has had an electric season, cementing himself as the premier breakout player in all of baseball. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch’s early praise for the left-handed pitcher has come to fruition in a big way. Hinch noted back in 2021 that Skubal was the best pitching prospect in Detroit’s organization and even went as far as to predict a Cy Young Award in his future. Now, three years later, that prediction is on the brink of reality.
Skubal has posted an outstanding 18-4 record with a 2.39 ERA, dominating hitters throughout the season. He’s racked up 228 strikeouts over 192 innings, leading the league in wins, ERA, strikeouts, ERA+, and FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). These exceptional numbers showcase why Skubal tops the list as MLB’s biggest breakout player in 2024.
4. Riley Greene, LF, Tigers
WAR: 5.3
Riley Greene’s rise has been equally impressive. After hitting .254 with five home runs in his 2022 rookie season and seeing limited play in 2023 due to injuries, Greene has finally had his breakout year. Playing in 131 games so far, Greene has reached base at a career-high .350 clip while smacking 24 home runs and driving in 72 RBIs.
His stellar performance at the plate earned him his first All-Star appearance, solidifying his role as a key contributor for the Detroit Tigers. Greene’s presence in the lineup has been pivotal to keeping Detroit in contention for a wild-card playoff spot. His breakout has been one of the most exciting storylines for the team this season.
The Detroit Tigers’ Bright Future
The recognition of Tarik Skubal and Riley Greene as two of the top breakout players in all of baseball is a testament to the Detroit Tigers’ growing talent and potential. Both players have played vital roles in keeping Detroit competitive and have laid the foundation for what could be an even more successful future for the team.
With Skubal’s dominance on the mound and Greene’s consistency and power at the plate, the Tigers have found two young stars who could lead them to greater heights in the coming years. If 2024 is any indication, the future is bright for the Detroit Tigers.
With only five games left in the regular season, the Detroit Tigers have everything to play for as they look to secure a wild card spot in the 2024 MLB Playoffs. Entering tonight’s pivotal matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Tigers control their own destiny. As noted by Tigers beat writer Evan Woodbery, here’s what needs to happen for Detroit to lock up their playoff position:
5-0 finish: The Tigers are in.
4-1 finish: The Tigers are in.
3-2 finish: The Minnesota Twins must go 5-0 to overtake them.
2-3 finish: The Twins must go 4-1 to bump the Tigers.
1-4 finish: The Twins need to go 3-2, Seattle Mariners 4-0 to bump the Tigers.
0-5 finish: The Twins would need to go 2-3, Mariners 3-1, and Boston Red Sox 4-0.
With a playoff berth hanging in the balance, tonight’s lineup is all about keeping the Tigers’ hopes alive. Here’s a look at how the team will take the field against the Rays:
Detroit Tigers Starting Lineup – September 25
Parker Meadows (CF)
Kerry Carpenter (DH)
Matt Vierling (3B)
Riley Greene (LF)
Wenceel Pérez (RF)
Colt Keith (2B)
Spencer Torkelson (1B)
Trey Sweeney (SS)
Dillon Dingler (C)
Starting Pitcher: Keider Montero
The Tigers will be relying on some of their rising stars and regulars as they face a tough opponent in the Rays. Montero will take the mound to kick things off, while the lineup looks to build momentum offensively and put Detroit in the best possible position to clinch their postseason spot.
Game Information: First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET at Comerica Park. The game can be viewed on Bally Sports Detroit, and fans can listen to the action on 97.1 The Ticket.
The Tigers are looking to make every game count as they march toward a potential playoff run, and tonight’s game against the Rays is critical for keeping their wild card hopes alive.
Tigers vs Orioles: The matchup between the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles is set for Friday, September 20, 2024, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Tigers enter this game on a hot streak with four consecutive wins, including a recent series sweep against the Kansas City Royals. Overall, they have won nine of their last 11 games, putting them at an impressive 80-73 this season.
On the other hand, the Orioles are struggling, having lost three of their last four games, which comes on the heels of a series loss against the San Francisco Giants. Currently sitting at 85-68, they will aim to turn things around against a confident Tigers team that recently took two out of three from them.
The Tigers have shown resilience and consistency in their recent games, particularly against American League opponents. Given their current form and offensive output, they are likely to challenge the Orioles effectively. Corbin Burnes will start for Baltimore; however, Detroit’s pitching staff has also been strong. I predict a close game, but I’ll take the Tigers to win.
Score Prediction: Tigers 4, Orioles 3.
More
This game presents a significant opportunity for Riley Greene, who has been a standout for the Tigers this season with 24 home runs and 71 RBIs. Additionally, the Orioles‘ Gunnar Henderson is having a breakout year, boasting 37 home runs. As both teams approach the end of the regular season, each player will be looking to cement their legacies and potentially set personal records. The outcome of this game could be a pivotal point in the playoff race for both teams.
The brand, known for its extensive collection of sports cards, memorabilia, and collectibles, opened its first location in Canton in 2021. The new 2,200-square-foot store, located at 1414 Griswold St., is set to open in October, bringing new features and more memorabilia to Detroit collectors and sports fans.
“Not too long after we opened our location in Canton, I saw the vision to open one downtown,” co-owner DeWitt Moore says. “It’s always been on the horizon for us, but it was all about timing.”
Moore, along with his business partners James Mathews and Michael Khoury — known collectively as “The 3 Kings” — are lifelong collectors who first met at a local card show. “They were in the card show shopping, they came to my table and bought some things from me,” Moore says. “We just all got a good vibe, hit it off real good, exchanged numbers, and we built a rapport with each other.”
He adds, “When the opportunity came to open the store, it was a no brainer.”
3 Kings’s Canton location has built a strong customer base, Moore says, but he believes the new Detroit store, located near the city’s major sports stadiums, will attract even more collectors and fans.
“You literally have to drive 20-30 miles out of the city to find a good card shop,” Moore says. “We got the people that do come [to Canton], but how many aren’t coming because it’s too far? I just felt there was a need for that to be near those stadiums within walking distance and provide us an opportunity to do things within the community as well as being down there and develop these relationships with these local sports teams.”
The new location will offer a larger space and interactive features, including a Card Breaking Studio where collectors can participate in live card breaks — a popular trend in the industry. Card breaking involves splitting up decks of cards to sell portions at lower prices, and Moore believes it has “revolutionized the card business.”
“Those guys doing breaks are equivalent to ten 3 Kings stores,” he says.
In addition to serving collectors, 3 Kings has a mission of giving back to the community through sponsorships, school supply giveaways, and partnerships with local sports teams.
Looking ahead, the owners hope to develop relationships with city officials, Detroit’s major athletic teams, and local little league teams, as well as provide education about collecting and offer a space where collectors can connect.
The store’s upcoming grand opening in October will feature a weekend of events with food, music, giveaways, and more.

With Tarik Skubal on the mound for the Tigers, Detroit is in a strong position. Skubal, boasting a 16-4 record and a 2.50 ERA, has been exceptional this season. Despite his past struggles against the Royals, his current form suggests he can dominate this matchup.
Alec Marsh, who will start for Kansas City, has been inconsistent, and this will be only his second career start against Detroit. Considering the Tigers’ recent success and the Royals’ struggles against high-caliber teams, the prediction leans toward a Tigers win.
Score Prediction: Tigers 5, Royals 3

The Tigers have been surprisingly strong on the road, particularly when facing AL Central opponents. However, starting pitcher Casey Mize has struggled mightily against Kansas City in his recent outings, lugging a 6.98 ERA into this matchup. Meanwhile, Royals starter Cole Ragans has been rock-solid with a 3.32 ERA and an impressive 211 strikeouts this season.
It’s not all doom and gloom for Detroit, though. Their offense has been firing, and they’ve thrived as road underdogs, covering the run line in 11 straight games when visiting AL teams. But with Mize’s recent struggles and the Royals’ home-field advantage, expect Kansas City to pull off a narrow win.
Prediction: Royals 6, Tigers 4

Predictions
This game is going to be a nail-biter. The Tigers have been playing great ball recently, especially on the road, but they’re running into a Royals team that’s been nearly unbeatable at home.
Seth Lugo is a big reason for that. He’s 16-8 with a 2.94 ERA this season, and his career numbers against Detroit (3-0 with a 1.29 ERA) suggest it’ll be tough for the Tigers to break through. Detroit won’t go down without a fight, but Kansas City has the edge in this one. Expect a close, competitive game.
Score Prediction: Royals 5, Tigers 3

The Tigers have been clutch on the road, winning their last five games against AL Central opponents, but they’ve struggled to beat teams with winning records. On the flip side, Kansas City has been red-hot at home, winning four straight at Kauffman Stadium. Offensively, the Royals are powered by Bobby Witt Jr., who’s been a force all season.
The Tigers will look to Riley Greene and Matt Vierling to keep their playoff dreams alive. However, with Lugo on the mound, it’s going to be an uphill battle for Detroit.
Orioles vs Tigers, Friday night as the Baltimore Orioles take on the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. With the Orioles looking to rebound from a tough loss and the Tigers desperate for a win to stay relevant, this game promises to be an exciting contest.
The Orioles are entering this game with the intent to bounce back from a disappointing performance against the Red Sox. Despite their recent struggles, they have a solid track record against AL East opponents and a strong performance from pitcher Zach Eflin this season. On the other hand, the Tigers have had a rough patch on Fridays against AL East teams and need their offense to ignite to counter the Orioles’ strengths.
Score Prediction: Orioles 5, Tigers 3

The Orioles’ recent form suggests they are primed for a bounce-back performance, especially with Eflin on the mound. Their recent betting trends show a strong tendency to perform well on the road following losses, while the Tigers have struggled to cover the run line in recent Friday games. The Rockies vs Tigers matchup on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at Comerica Park pits two teams on opposite trajectories. While the Rockies have struggled all season, the Tigers find themselves firmly in the playoff race. This game offers an intriguing contrast between a team looking to finish strong and another with postseason aspirations. Tarik Skubal takes the mound for Detroit, while Ryan Feltner will start for Colorado. The Tigers’ hot form and Skubal’s impressive season could be the key to a dominant performance in this matchup.

The Tigers are in prime position to dominate this game behind Tarik Skubal‘s stellar season (16-4, 2.53 ERA) and strong offensive output. Skubal’s recent form should allow Detroit to stifle Colorado’s offense, which has struggled throughout the year, ranking 23rd in the league. Ryan Feltner, despite a decent last outing, has been inconsistent with a 2-10 record and a 5.09 ERA. Detroit’s superior run differential and consistent batting should give them the edge in this matchup.
Score Prediction: Tigers 6, Rockies 2. Back Detroit on the run line.

The Rockies are averaging just 4.17 runs per game, while their pitching staff ranks last in the league, allowing 5.72 runs on average.

In their last game, Detroit’s Trey Sweeny hit a home run and drove in three RBIs, showcasing the Tigers’ balanced attack.
Detroit is the clear favorite to win, especially with Skubal leading the charge.
In this Rockies vs Tigers matchup, the Detroit Tigers will look to continue their recent surge in a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. After a dominant performance in the series opener, the Tigers are poised to build on that momentum as Casey Mize takes the mound. The Rockies, on the other hand, will aim to bounce back after a blowout loss on Tuesday, turning to rookie Tanner Gordon for a chance to even the series.

The Tigers come into this game with momentum following their series-opening win, thanks to Keider Montero’s complete-game shutout. Casey Mize has been solid over his last three starts, allowing six earned runs over 16.2 innings. He’ll look to build on that against a struggling Rockies lineup. The key for Colorado will be rookie Tanner Gordon, who has yet to win a game in his first seven starts and currently holds a 7.55 ERA.
Detroit’s offense has been clicking lately, with Riley Greene showing strong form at the plate. Meanwhile, the Rockies will need contributions from players like Ryan McMahon to compete in this game.

The Tigers are 36-36 on the road this year, and with Skubal’s pitching, they are poised to continue their winning ways. Meanwhile, the Athletics, though competitive, struggle when matched up against top-tier opponents.
Score Prediction: Tigers 5, Athletics 2

Thursday’s Tigers vs Padres game is expected to be a high-scoring affair. Both starting pitchers, Casey Mize for the Tigers and Martin Perez for the Padres, have struggled with consistency, which sets up a scenario for offensive fireworks. The Tigers will likely capitalize on Perez’s inconsistency, as Mize’s recent struggles are also concerning for Detroit. The Padres have a slight edge with their lineup and home-field advantage, but expect a close contest with plenty of runs.
Score Prediction: Padres 7, Tigers 5

The Tigers have had issues with pitching, and although their offense ranks 22nd in the league, they have enough firepower to exploit Perez’s weaknesses. Riley Greene’s recent hot streak could also play a pivotal role in keeping this game competitive. On the Padres’ side, Jackson Merrill continues to be a standout with his offensive contributions. Keep an eye on how both bullpens perform, as that could be the key to a late-game shift in momentum.
Back the Over (8.5) for this matchup—it’s shaping up to be an offense-heavy contest.
The Tigers vs Padres game on September 4, 2024, at Petco Park promises to be a thrilling matchup as both teams aim to bolster their playoff chances. The Tigers are still in the wild-card hunt, while the Padres are riding high with the return of key players, including Yu Darvish. Darvish will be making his first start since May 29, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this contest.
The Tigers are still fighting for a playoff spot, but Keider Montero’s struggles this season make this a challenging matchup for them. The Padres, with the return of Yu Darvish and Fernando Tatis Jr., have the momentum and the firepower to take control of this game. Darvish, who has been outstanding against the Tigers in his career, is expected to lead the Padres to victory.
Score Prediction: Padres 5, Tigers 3

The Fan Vote was first launched in 2013. Per the Rock Hall, “There have been over four million fan votes cast over the past 10 years, with 64% of the Fan Vote ballot (35 of 55) earning induction in the same year; and 86% (38 of 44 unique nominations) eventually earning induction. The Red Sox vs Tigers matchup kicks off a three-game series this Friday at Comerica Park. Both teams are coming off mixed performances in their recent series, with the Red Sox splitting a four-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tigers managing two wins against the Los Angeles Angels before dropping the finale.
With Tanner Houck starting on the mound for Boston and Detroit yet to announce their starter, this game promises to be an intriguing contest as both teams fight to stay in the playoff race.
The Boston Red Sox are slightly favored in this matchup, primarily due to their stronger overall record and Tanner Houck’s solid performance this season. Houck, with an 8-9 record and a 3.23 ERA, will look to rebound from a rough outing against Arizona, where he allowed six earned runs over six innings. Despite this setback, Houck has shown resilience in previous games, and if he can return to form, the Red Sox will have the upper hand.
On the other side, the Detroit Tigers will need a strong pitching performance, especially since their starter hasn’t been announced yet. The Tigers’ recent games have seen a mix of outcomes, with their offense struggling in the last game against the Angels. However, Detroit’s hitters like Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry have been reliable, with Greene particularly excelling against the Red Sox in past meetings.
