In honor of the trio’s iconic performance at the VMAs exactly two decades ago, the rapper walked the red carpet in a sheer bridal dress with lacy tights and a voluminous tutu. Spice’s style team completed the elegant ensemble with silver jewelry and strappy heels with rhinestone embellishments.

    Spice’s dress featured a satin corset bodice with lacy sleeves that transformed into fingerless gloves at the ends of her wrists. At the waist, the dress puffed out in either direction, boasting multiple layers of floral lace. The delicate, sheer fabric appeared again along the neckline and on both sides of the bodice, marking two large cutouts along her back. Spice kept the ornate design going with a pair of see-through tights and bedazzled sandals. Around her neck, the rapper also wore a rhinestone collar and layered chain necklaces in silver, the perfect complement to her Moon Person for best new artist.

    The frilly design is a clear homage to Spears and Aguilera’s outfits at the 2003 VMAs, which in themselves were nods to Madonna’s 1984 MTV VMAs performance when she sang “Like a Virgin.” The 2003 performance began with the megastars strutting onstage to the tune of “Like a Virgin” in full wedding dresses, complete with tulle veils and flower bouquets. As the track transitioned to Madonna’s “Hollywood,” the singer emerged in a groom-inspired tuxedo look complete with a top hat. The performance — including the trio’s outfits — has since been memorialized as one of the most iconic moments in award show history.

    Though Spice’s outfit looked incredible regardless of its significance, the clear homage to such a historic award show makes her ensemble that much more special. Later in the evening, she changed into a sheer maxi dress with a plunging, lace-up design that stretched down either side of her silhouette. Along the back, the ruching of the transparent fabric split at the knees, creating a subtle slit that gave a glimpse at her white pointed-toe stilettos.

    It’s likely that the dress, inspired by artist Louise Bourgeois’s famous “Maman” spider sculpture, is a direct nod to Doja’s upcoming album, “Scarlet.” “This stunning creation pays homage to Louise’s extraordinary work and the inspiration behind it — her mother’s dedication to textiles, mending, and repairing fabrics,” the designer captioned photos of Doja Cat’s look on Instagram ahead of the award show. “A true masterpiece that weaves together the worlds of fashion and art.”

    The intricate, floor-length design was carefully draped to create multiple cutouts along the bodice and skirt, which covered a nude thong. From behind, the cutouts continued, giving the star minimal coverage as she posed for the cameras in her frosted heels. The neckline, also composed of the delicate, web-like fabric, boasted a one-shoulder design. Further demonstrating her love for all things creepy, Doja also wore multiple snake-like cuff bracelets and oversize spider earrings with ruby eyes and diamond abdomens.

    As millions of New York City residents cope with an ongoing heat wave, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly appear to be living in an alternate reality where the air is crisp and wearing anything less than a light winter coat is unsuitable. On Sept. 7, the couple stepped out in a set of fuzzy headgear fit for a winter ski trip, a vacation in Antarctica, or virtually anywhere other than the sweat-inducing boroughs of New York in late summer.

    For her half of the perplexing ensemble, Fox stepped out in a black cardigan, flared leggings, and a pair of lugged sneakers. She accessorized with a leather crossbody bag with silver-chain detailing, coordinated necklaces, and white sunglasses. On top of her head, the actor gave a sartorial FU to the weather with a fuzzy black bucket hat. In addition to the fact that black fabric absorbs more heat from both the sun and your skin, Fox’s hat, admittedly, has me a little concerned for her well-being. Does her bag contain a portable fan? A bottle of extra-cold iced tea? A thermostat set to 72 F to prove that her personal bubble is colder than all of Manhattan?

    At least Kelly, on the other hand, took a slightly cooler approach to his ensemble with a lighter color palette. Complementing Fox’s look, Kelly walked alongside his fiancée in a pair of sage-green cargo pants, a “Bad Hair Day” graphic T-shirt, and a pair of sneakers. Equally impenetrable to the heat, Kelly completed his outfit with a furry black balaclava, sunglasses, and silver jewelry. How he managed not to overheat within seconds of stepping out is nothing short of a mystery. His saving grace appears to be a pink cold cup, which I can only assume is filled with a never-ending supply of ice water that he and Fox can share to stave off the heat.

    For some, their eyes might go directly to the bear-like set of ears atop Kelly’s head or the fiery red of Fox’s freshly dyed bob. When I look at these photos of Fox and Kelly, however, I’m haunted only by the knowledge of the boiling sweat that must be trapped under the thick layers of their headgear. While the couple’s coordinated sunglasses hint they’re aware of the weather, everything else about their outfits has me convinced that they’ve transcended past summer into a season all their own.

    From behind, even Fox and Kelly’s security guard can be seen walking forward with a look of skepticism on his face. Whether it’s because of the blistering heat or the couple’s unique wardrobe choices is unclear. Would I have swapped the headpieces for sun hats or visors? Absolutely. The fact that they chose to suffer together for the sake of style, though, is a little sweet.

    Whether Fox and Kelly were nonplussed by the weather or truly unaware of the scorching temperatures remains to be seen. Either way, we hope the couple were able to slip back into an air-conditioned building or vehicle shortly after their stroll. PG&E knows I’ll be parking myself directly in front of an open freezer to shake off the secondhand sweat.

    Miley Cyrus poured her heart, soul, and apparently, her performance salary into her 2014 “Bangerz” tour. “Bangerz,” her fourth studio album, notably re-established Cyrus’s musical career following her departure from Disney Channel. A mix of hip-hop, pop, and R&B, the album turned the public’s vision of Cyrus as an artist on its head. The accompanying tour further solidified her artistic transformation.

    Between wiggling her tongue in front of thousands and belting out bawdy lyrics coupled with highly suggestive dance moves, Cyrus reinvented herself. In a Sept. 3 TikTok video promoting her emotional new single, “Used to Be Young,” Cyrus reflected on her “Bangerz” era and said that she paid for a majority of the tour’s over-the-top props with her own money. “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent,” she said in the TikTok video.

    As her first post-Disney production, Cyrus saw the “Bangerz” tour as an opportunity to separate herself from her forced pop persona and showcase her true, wild, fun-loving spirit on stage. To do this, she knew she would need to go all out with her outfits, her energy, and the stage design. Unfortunately, many of her stage ideas proved too extravagant for producers, who she claims refused to fund the majority of props that have since come to symbolize the tour.

    “The ‘Bangerz’ Tour was an investment in myself,” she said. “A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces.” When no one was willing to fund her out-of-the-box ideas, Cyrus took matters into her own hands. She said she used her performance salary to back everything from a giant, flying hotdog to an oversized cutout of her own face complete with a functional tongue slide.

    “I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue,” she recalled. “This was me and Diane Martel — this was our full vision, once again. She goes like, ‘How would you want to end this concert? The show is so big. How do you end it?’ And I wanted to end it in a ‘Truman Show’ reference, so I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign the way that Jim Carrey does because I felt like ‘The Truman Show’ was really a reflection of my life.”

    The 80-concert show reportedly made around $70 million in ticket sales, according to Forbes. For many, the fact that Cyrus would reallocate a sizable amount of her profit from the production may seem like a questionable decision, especially at such a tender point in her musical career. Looking back, though, Cyrus sees the decision as an important investment that has since paid off tenfold.

    “When everyone kept saying, ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do like 100 shows and you’re not going to make any money,’ I said, ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself,’” she said. “So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

    The plunging halter top featured dramatic side cutouts held together by three rows of string ties along her back. She completed the outfit, styled by Yasi Guilani, with a pair of stiletto boots in avocado green and white.

    In a surprising twist, Tinashe had an outfit change à la Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV VMAs less than halfway through the video. Keeping with the supermarket theme, she spread herself out in the deli meat section while wearing a bikini made entirely of sliced ham and turkey cutlets. While it’s unclear whether she could actually sit up or walk around in the unconventional design, the wardrobe department certainly kept style and creativity in mind when creating the swimsuit. Each slice of meat was layered artfully to create the illusion of ruffles.

    In February, the singer gave a sneak peek at her summer wardrobe in a pair of neon bikini bottoms for her 30th birthday celebration. Though most celebrities have made 2023 the year of the bikini regardless of the season, Tinashe was certainly one of the first to proclaim her love for the vacation-ready style.
