  • I Was Afraid to Try Light Therapy at Home—But Qure’s LED Mask Calmed My Fears

I Was Afraid to Try Light Therapy at Home—But Qure’s LED Mask Calmed My Fears

    [ad_1]

Light therapy can be intimidating—especially if you have melanated skin like me because we’re more likely to experience side effects like redness and scarring. So naturally, when I got the chance to test Qure Skincare’s Q-Rejuvalight Pro LED Light Therapy Mask—I didn’t jump at the opportunity.

I’ve gotten red light facials in the past, but it was something about using the tool on my own, without the help of a professional, that spooked me. Before putting it to the test, I read as many reviews as possible, all of which called the device a “game changer” that produces “subtle” but noticeable results “over time.” I even consulted with New York City-based aesthetician Audrey Matney from 123 Beauty Lab, who said the tool was perfectly fine to use on a nightly basis. With that, I felt more confident going into this “experiment,” but then I found myself a bit apprehensive again when the Q-Rejuvalight’s manual warned that the mask was not suitable for dark brown (type V) or very deep brown or Black skin (type VI). According to the scale (provided in the manual), however, I fall into the moderate brown skin (type IV) category, which means the mask was safe for me to use. Still, I wanted to tread lightly.

I’ve been incorporating the device into my skincare routine for a little over two weeks now, and I’m relieved to say I haven’t had any adverse reactions. I’ve been dealing with some stubborn breakouts (likely due to stress, testing other products, and my wonky sleep schedule following Fashion Week) and have noticed the redness/inflammation has calmed down. I also made sure to hydrate as much as possible throughout this process, and I refrained from using harsh products that might put too much stress on my skin.

    How I Tested

The directions recommended thoroughly cleansing skin before use, so I washed with Tula’s Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser and patted my face dry. I didn’t apply any serums or moisturizers to better allow the light to penetrate my skin. I then inserted the goggles into the mask’s eye openings to protect my eyes. The device also comes with an adjustable head strap, which I looped through the metallic openings at the sides. Next, I held down the power button until the indicator lit up green. Afterward, I pressed the button two more times, which prompted the device to light up red for the Anti-Aging Treatment and then purple for the Anti-Breakout Treatment. I settled on the Anti-Breakout setting since that was my current concern. I began testing at night, continuing every two nights for the first week and then every other night for the second week. I used it for 3 minutes each time and not a minute longer. I followed up with my go-to serums and night creams before going to bed.

    My Honest Thoughts

I think the best result when trying something new is no adverse reactions. While I feel I need to continue testing for a few more weeks, I was relieved that my skin didn’t take a turn for the worse. There was no noticeable redness, burning, or stinging. On the first day of testing, I had a few pimples and some inflammation on my forehead, and I did notice that they had calmed down after about five days. I also noticed less frequent breakouts in the days that followed. For the most part, my skin felt normal and firm. I plan to continue using, and I suggest testing for a much longer period to really see a change in your skin.

When it comes to the design of the device, it is undeniably made well and definitely feels like I’ve brought the spa to my house. I did find it easier to hold the mask up to my face rather than using the strap because the strap felt a bit too tight and made my eyes bulge against the goggles.

If you know me well, you probably think of me as a Soft Services stan. Truly, I’m a ride-or-die for this brand (so much so that I was asked to write this article). Its products have become staples in my skincare routine, and I’m always very eager to share my enthusiasm for how they’ve transformed my skin.

My Favorite Soft Services Products at a Glance

Soft Services consistently delivers results that exceed my expectations and I’m here to tell you exactly how. Keep reading to discover why I’m obsessed with four of their standout products and why I’m all in when it comes to this body care powerhouse.

    What is Soft Services?

Known for its innovative approach to self-care and its luxurious yet effective products, Soft Services combines high-performance ingredients with sleek, modern designs to deliver results that not only enhance your skin but also make you feel like you are using something of the utmost luxury—but for a lot less. Founded by Annie Kreighbaum and Rebecca Zhou in 2021, the duo has launched tons of body care since the brand’s inauguration. Crafted to tackle specific skin concerns like dryness and back acne, they’ve got fans by the boatload.

Benefits of Using Soft Services Products, According to an Expert

“I love Soft Services for its commitment to creating effective, science-backed skincare solutions that address some of the most persistent skin concerns, like keratosis pilaris and dryness. Their formulations are meticulously crafted, prioritizing skin health without compromising on the luxury feel. The thoughtful approach to every product ensures that users receive the care their skin truly deserves,” says Dr. Marisa Garshick.

“During a facial with a celebrity-loved facialist, she told me that skincare should be nipples up—that’s when i realized I don’t self-care the rest of the my body as I do my face. So I turn to Soft Services to help treat my body. I stocked up on the Smoothing Set which groups a chemical and physical exfoliant that I work in two to three times a week, plus the Carea Cream as my daily body hydrator. As a Latino, I’m prone to ingrown hairs so this works easily to treat and prevent them” says Anthonino Olimpio, Global Brand Strategist at Estee Lauder.

    How I Tested Soft Services

To give you a thorough review, I put each Soft Services product to the test over a period of a few weeks — here’s what I think of each one.

The Clearing Mist is a game-changer for those dealing with blemishes or dull skin on the body. This is a must-have for me in the summer when dirt, grime, and sweat can make this type of condition worse.

    Pros

    • Dries super quickly, perfect for oily skin
    • Provides deep hydration with no leftover residue, like you might get with a lotion or cream

  • I’m Picky About Perfume, But This Tropical Fragrance Is Definitely the Scent of the Summer

When I was younger, it didn’t take much convincing for me to try a new perfume. If a celebrity endorsed it or my favorite magazine labeled it the new “it” product, it went on my Christmas or birthday wishlist and I instantly became a fan. Whether a fragrance smelled sickly sweet or had notes of wood didn’t matter much—I would douse myself in it every day and felt cool doing it, too.

Fast forward years later, and I’ve become particular about smells. My nose has gotten so sensitive that strong candles give me a headache and certain dry shampoos can send me into a sneezing fit. I still love perfume, but when shopping for a new one, I’ve become super selective.

Over the past few weeks, Viktor&Rolf’s Flowerbomb Tiger Lily has solidified its spot as my new favorite. What I like about this scent is that it’s fresh and fragrant without being too intense. Even the smallest amount seems to last all day without fading, and all you’ll need is a quick spritz before heading out the door.

    Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb Tiger Lily

While one of Flowerbomb Tiger Lily’s key notes is mango, I wouldn’t categorize it as a fruity fragrance. Instead, crisp top notes like bergamot and coconut milk accord balance it out, while a hint of tiger-lily accord adds a floral twist.

Benzoin also brings a warmer, rich, and woody scent into this specific mix, ensuring this perfume doesn’t come across as too feminine. It’s a bit sweeter and different than the original Flowerbomb — which, according to Viktor&Rolf, is known for its “explosive” floral “sensory experience.” However, I sometimes find that option to be a bit overwhelming, so that’s another positive for me.

As previously mentioned, this spicy-floral-fruity scent seems to last all day long. It doesn’t fade, but I do find that some of the sweeter notes begin to pop after a few hours. On more than one occasion, people have stopped to ask what perfume I’m wearing, noting that whatever it is, it smells really good.

Funnily enough, Flowerbomb Tiger Lily is still an “it” perfume. I’ve seen it all over my TikTok FYP and it’s even endorsed by Emily Ratajkowski, who stars in the campaign. Plus, like all Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb fragrances, the bottle is shaped like a grenade — a detail that makes it look extra cool and worth putting on display.

Reviews for this fragrance describe it as reminiscent of a relaxing tropical beach vacation, but I’d take it one step further. To me, it’s something you’d spray before heading out on a sunny, fun-filled adventure (I swear it makes me feel energized), but could also wear for a sexy, beachside dinner date later on.

Basically, it’s the perfect perfume to pack in your suitcase, and for sure the scent of spring and summer 2024.

  • I Tried The New Retinol Serum That Claims To Reduce Wrinkles In Two Weeks

I Tried The New Retinol Serum That Claims To Reduce Wrinkles In Two Weeks

Winter presents a mixed bag for trying new skincare products, since sunlight exposure is decreased (a plus!) but moisture is difficult to retain. Even so, I wanted to test Ole Henriksen’s Double Rewind Retinol Serum when it launched in January, hoping my complexion could be like that rare flower that blooms in the tundra. Why? Because incorporating retinol into your routine is one of the best things you can do for your skin.

A topical form of vitamin A, retinol is clinically proven to spur cell turnover, which tackles just about every skin ailment from acne and dark spots to rough texture and sagging. It’s a proven powerhouse considered the gold standard in anti-aging. But just like committing to an exercise regime, starting a new retinol comes with growing pains. While your skin cells acclimate to more frequent turnover, dry patches, tightness, and irritation can occur.

I’m no stranger to the retinol uglies, and I was intrigued that this formula comes from Ole Henriksen. The Scandinavian company is known to eschew harsher ingredients for botanical-based ones, like retinol-alternative bakuchiol. The odd couple pairing is the exact premise of Double Rewind, which balances two different types of retinol with nourishing antioxidants—and claims to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in just two weeks.

I’m skeptical of anything that promises fast results on structural signs of aging, and you should be, too. Read on for my review of the formula with commentary from Riva Barak, VP of Product & Technical Development at KENDO Brands. We break down who should use it and how it long it actually takes to see results.

How Does It Compare To Other Retinols?

Double Rewind is elegantly formulated with not one, but two forms of retinol. “It’s packed with 0.3% vegan, encapsulated retinol, as well as beta-carotene, a retinol precursor and larger retinoid that breaks down over time,” explains Barak. The two varietals of retinol work synergistically, creating immediate and long-term boons like smoother, bouncier skin.

Laced with soothing ingredients like aloe juice, glycerin, and plant extracts, it’s also less likely to irritate than traditional retinols. The natural scent and slip texture also don’t yield medicinal vibes, they provide a sensorial experience intended to spark joy.

“With a silky texture and absorption that doesn’t leave skin feeling sticky, and the subtle, invigorating scent, the Double Rewind Retinol Serum delivers what we call the ‘Ole Henriksen 360° experience’, results-driven formulas that are a joy to use,” says Barak.

    Who Should Use It?

Skincare enthusiasts span many demographics, but they should invest in products that align with their particular needs. Retinols are not for rookies or school-age children, as they are potent and usually involve an adjustment period. I started using retinol a few times a week in my mid-20s and loved how it faded my acne scars and provided a more even, glowy complexion. Now in my mid-30s, it’s a non-negotiable.

“This formula combats signs of aging—including the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots, dull and uneven skin, enlarged pores, and loss of elasticity and bounce,” says Barak. “Retinol is a highly active ingredient, and best suited for those 30 to 50 and over looking to overhaul and improve the overall look of their skin.”

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

Retinols are notoriously easy to give up on, since initial use often invokes flaking and sensitivity, obscuring the smoother, brighter baby skin coming to the surface. Double Rewind is clinically proven to yield results in two weeks, much faster than typical six or 12-week claims.

“We conducted a 12-week clinical study on 40 people and found that after just two weeks, Double Rewind visibly improved the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture and skin brightness/radiance,” says Barak. “After eight weeks, additional improvements in skin tone evening, hydration, and skin barrier were measured.”

I’ve been testing Double Rewind/indulging in Scandinavian skincare hygge for over a month now. My nasolabial folds (the lines between my nose and my mouth) and marionnette lines (around my mouth and chin) appear softer. I’ve noticed an improvement in my skin’s texture and overall glow. Even though the formula contains calming ingredients, I never skip an occlusive moisturizer on top. The combination has yielded the dewy skin, tight pores, and overall sheen you see below—in the dead of New York winter.

    Why Trust Me/StyleCaster?

An erstwhile beauty editor turned Editor-in-Chief, I’ve tested several thousand products in my 12-year career—much to my skin barrier’s chagrin. With the world’s top dermatologists on speed dial (hi, Dr. Henry and Dr. Zeichner), I balance my market expertise with actual science.
