  • I’ve Self-Tanned Since Middle School, and I Swear By These 8 Drugstore Formulas

I’ve Self-Tanned Since Middle School, and I Swear By These 8 Drugstore Formulas

These days, I generally skip self-tanner and spray tans. That said, I still consider myself a connoisseur in the art of self-tanning and all the offerings on the market. No joke, I have an entire cupboard at home brimming with mousses, lotions, waters, sprays, powders, and every other self-tanning innovation you can think of. Something that may surprise you? Some of my favorite formulas can be found at the drugstore.

Even though I love pricier picks from Isle of Paradise, St. Tropez, James Read, and Bali Body, I still have love for Jergens, L’Oréal, Sally Hansen, and other low- to mid-cost brands you can find on Amazon or at Walmart. Ahead, I’m sharing eight of the best drugstore self-tanners I personally use, have purchased in a pinch while traveling, and/or have recommended to friends when they don’t want to spend $50 on a bottled bronze. Keep scrolling! All my faves lie ahead.

  • These TikTok-Famous Makeup Trends Have Completely Won Us Over

These TikTok-Famous Makeup Trends Have Completely Won Us Over

I scroll TikTok way too much for fear of missing out on a really good trend. Of course, it comes with the job territory, but something about this particular social app makes me waste the most amount of time. The upside is that I’ve really perfected my algorithm. It’s impeccable, actually. Sometimes, it gets derailed when my husband sends me a random “funny” video (all I’ll say is that we have very different taste in content), but I’m always able to get my FYP back to the content that speaks to me most: beauty. It’s how I discover buzzy products, but more importantly, it’s where the best beauty trends are born.

With that in mind, I tapped some of my very stylish colleagues, Amy Serrano, Shawna Hudson, and Jadene Munson, to share the viral makeup trends that have completely won them over and all the products needed from Macy’s to create the looks. From balletcore to cloud skin, there’s a look for every style.

  • TikTok Loves an “Everything Shower”—Here Are 19 Items You Need for the Trend

TikTok Loves an “Everything Shower”—Here Are 19 Items You Need for the Trend

I don’t know who started the “everything shower” trend on Instagram and TikTok, but I’d like to thank them because they coined a term for something I’ve been trying to describe almost my entire adult life. An “everything shower” is when all your beauty and personal care routines fall on the same day. In other words, you’re overdue for a hair maskexfoliatingshaving, and washing your hair. An “everything shower” isn’t a quick hop-in-and-hop-out situation. No, it’s about checking off a long list of beauty and personal care tasks before you leave the bathroom.

I wanted to know what products my fellow beauty editors count on to get them through an “everything shower.” After all, beauty editors are experts in this stuff and have access to some of the best products out there. I wanted to know which items made the cut and why. So, I asked, and they delivered. Keep scrolling to see the 19 nonnegotiable products Who What Wear beauty editors use when taking an everything shower.

  • Remi Bader Won’t Even Touch a Non-Waterproof Mascara—This Is Her Favorite

Remi Bader Won’t Even Touch a Non-Waterproof Mascara—This Is Her Favorite

Tell me about your partnership with Dove. What made you want to work with the brand?

This was a very easy partnership that made so much sense because I talk very candidly with my followers about how much I sweat and how it’s a stress for me. When Dove was doing this campaign, it was a very easy yes for me because I feel like the idea of this campaign—of embracing your underarms and not feeling ashamed and all of that—I talk about this without really thinking twice about it. It just really makes sense.

The whole campaign is about helping people feel less insecure about their underarms. How has that helped shift your own perspective?

I definitely think it has because, even though I’m candid and talk about it, I definitely have an insecurity around it. I feel like that’s okay, and it still makes sense for me being a part of this campaign because it’s helping me to be less insecure about it. I feel like a lot of people are really ashamed of seeing sweat through their shirts and things like that. I’ve always made it a big thing for me to get deodorant that makes me feel protected. This is perfect because it lasts up to 48 hours. This campaign has helped me because I was in a way worse place before, where I was like, “Oh my God, I don’t even want to go out because you’re gonna see my sweat in this dress or something.” Why are we so ashamed of something when so many people are dealing with the same issues and it’s such a normal thing? Normalizing it, talking about it more, and not being as ashamed of it is the whole point of this campaign.

I am also a very sweaty person. I completely understand how it feels to be like, “Oh, my God, I’m gonna sweat through this shirt.”

It’s definitely been a stress of mine, especially since I’ve gained more weight. I feel like it wasn’t as big of a stress for me [before], [but] people can have this issue, no matter what weight they are. For me, I feel like that’s where it’s been more bothersome to me. But again, the idea is to give you an antiperspirant. Just having that protection and feeling like you know that there’s something that you can use that will help you, it feels good.

I feel like Dove as a brand is so about empowerment in general.

Yeah, I feel like there are other things that they work on, too, that have to do with exactly like you said, empowerment of being the size that you are, in that body-positivity and body-neutrality space as well. That was like another reason, seeing other things that they were doing and that they’ve worked on in the past.

Do you have a favorite Dove deodorant scent?

I like the Beauty Finish. It’s fresh and rosy. I definitely go more toward a stick. But I notice that when I’m more in a rush, which is a lot of the time, I just use the spray, which dries completely clear. You don’t have to worry about seeing the white or anything on your clothes, which stresses a lot of people out too. But for me, I just feel like it’s very easy and quick to do the spray, but I’ve always just happened to be more of a stick person. So now, I just use both.

  • I Asked 3 French People for Their Favorite Fragrances—They Said, “Try This”

I Asked 3 French People for Their Favorite Fragrances—They Said, “Try This”

Moving to Paris for a month as a New Yorker was the ultimate culture shock in the beauty department. New York women love their beauty routines. A fresh blowout and clean-girl makeup are practically required if you want to live in the West Village, but French women do it differently. Seeing people leave the house makeup-free with freshly washed hair grew to surprise me as I walked around the streets of the 7th arrondissement. One thing French women never neglect is a signature fragrance. A lot of my American friends dabble with many perfumes for different occasions, but French people rely on just one special scent to round out their collection. I had to learn more.

I’m quite outgoing, but when it comes to starting a conversation with strangers, I can be a little bit shy. I overcame this character trait of mine by speaking up on multiple occasions during my trip and asking French women, “Now where did you get that perfume?” Many of them smelled so divine I just had to ask. They all convinced me to try the perfume that they considered a second skin, and I fell in love with what they showed me. Below, see the three perfumes that French people recommended to me. You’re sure to be impressed.

  • Now That I’ve Tried Tanning Water, I’m Never Using Another Self-Tan Product

Now That I’ve Tried Tanning Water, I’m Never Using Another Self-Tan Product

According to Evans, working in sections is absolutely crucial when it comes to tanning waters, since there’s no guide color to help you remember where you sprayed the product. “For example, the knee to the ankle would be one section, then the thigh would be a different section,” she says. “If you are unsure if you have covered an area, simply go over the area again. It will not negatively affect the development, as the skin can only absorb a certain amount of product in one application.” She notes that you can never apply too much tan, but you can apply too little, and this is what often leads to streaks and uneven tone.

If you’re applying tanning water to your face, Von Hep encourages misting your skin like you would with a face mist or toner. “For hands and feet, run the mitt over those areas and lightly apply using the residue product left on the mitt,” he says. Also, if you don’t have a mitt, don’t worry—you can apply using your hands, just make sure you wash them thoroughly after, taking care to scrub between your fingers.

Keep reading for the best self-tanning waters to try, including picks from Evans and Von Hep.

  • I Found a $9 Dupe for the Viral Dior Lip Glow Oil (You’re Welcome)

I Found a $9 Dupe for the Viral Dior Lip Glow Oil (You’re Welcome)

Here it is—the $9 lip oil I found to be a good dupe for luxury versions. Each of these lip oils is made with plum oil to moisturize the lips, apricot oil to soften and smooth, and pomegranate extract to protect with antioxidants. Together, these hero ingredients create a formula with zero thickness or stickiness. Instead, it feels silky and slippery, like any good lip oil should. Not only that, but it deposits just the right amount of shine and sheer color. The result is a plump and juicy-looking pout.

The first shade, Pink Rosé, is a true rosy pink color. It looks like it would deposit a lot of pigment when in the tube, but once it’s on the lips, you only see a sheer wash of color, which is just what I like. I think it’s a good match for the classic Dior Lip Glow Oil in Pink.

  • The “Holy” Step in Your Skincare Routine That You’re Probably Doing Wrong

The “Holy” Step in Your Skincare Routine That You’re Probably Doing Wrong

Using the wrong cleanser is just as bad as not cleansing your skin effectively. Rouleau says if you don’t choose the right formula for your skin type, you can risk everything from irritation to dehydration and a compromised moisture barrier. In other words, you’re really rolling the dice, and no one wants to do that with their skin.

Luckily, Rouleau has tips for choosing the right cleanser for your skin type. Start by paying attention to the texture of the cleanser. “If you struggle with very oily skin, gel cleansers are the way to go,” she says. “If your skin is on the drier side, you can opt for a creamy cleanser (or, if you wear heavier makeup or lots of sunscreen, a balm for nighttime). For those with combination skin, I usually recommend a gel cleanser in the morning and a creamy lotion or balm cleanser at night.”

Just keep in mind the texture of the cleanser determines how it should be used. “Gel cleansers should be applied to wet skin, while cleansers with a cream, balm, or lotion texture should be applied to dry skin,” Rouleau says. “If you apply a cleanser to dry skin, start by massaging it for 30 seconds. Then, add water to emulsify and massage.” Once it’s dissolved sunscreen, makeup, dirt, and debris, wipe or rinse your skin clean.

  • No Gatekeeping Here: Beauty Editors Spill Their All-Time Favorite Hand Creams

No Gatekeeping Here: Beauty Editors Spill Their All-Time Favorite Hand Creams

Though a plethora of in-depth studies and articles exist on anything and everything skincare, nailcare, haircare, and even scalpcare, there’s one key category that’s often overlooked. I’d go so far to say that this category is an afterthought for most of us. I’m talking, of course, about our hands, aka the most overworked, underappreciated part of our bodies. Think about it: Our hands work hard all day and receive little to no respect. It’s about time we show our hands the gratitude and love they deserve.

Similar to the peculiar skincare regimen we religiously follow to reverse signs of aging and brighten our complexions, our hands crave the same attention. They, too, wrinkle due to sun exposure; chap and dry in the colder months; and could use a glow-up every once in a while. Feeling guilty yet? Don’t panic. It’s not too late to begin your handcare journey. The first step? Discovering the right hand cream and using it throughout the day. Scroll to see 26 top-rated hand creams.

If You Despise Sticky Lips, You’ll Love Rare Beauty’s Viral Tinted Lip Oil

I hope I don’t alienate anyone by saying this, but I love polarizing products. I live for them. I can’t live without them. And I’m not even a dramatic person! Hear me out: There are too many brands and products at my fingertips, so the commotion helps me break through the clutter. Plus, any sort of buzz makes my curiosity explode. Will I love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in the middle? Nothing can get in my way until I try the damn thing. • Your Face Oil Soul Mate Exists—Here’s How to Choose the Best Formula

Your Face Oil Soul Mate Exists—Here’s How to Choose the Best Formula

Despite what you might think, everyone can actually use and reap the moisturizing benefits of face oils. As long as you use it correctly and choose a formula geared toward your skin type and concerns, you’re good to go! For example, someone with dry skin probably won’t use the same oil as someone with oily skin. And yes, even folks with oily skin can use face oil. The right mixture of ingredients can actually help stabilize and regulate the skin’s sebum production, which, in turn, will help curb excessive oiliness. If you have oily skin, look for an oil with oil-soluble esters, which help the oil to sink into the skin and disappear.

Those with combination skin will most likely want to use a face oil with extra hydrating ingredients that won’t clog pores or cause excess oiliness—think squalane, rosehip oil, and jojoba oil. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, you’ll want to avoid heavier oils like coconut, marula, palm, wheat germ, and soybean. Do opt for oils like sea buckthorn, olive, tea tree, and jojoba. I know, that’s a lot to take in, but don’t worry. We have you covered on which oils are truly best for each skin type below. Keep reading—your face oil soulmate is just a scroll away.

  • I Traveled For 20+ Hours Last Week—30 In-Flight Essentials I Relied Heavily On

I Traveled For 20+ Hours Last Week—30 In-Flight Essentials I Relied Heavily On

Last week, I left the office on a Monday morning and took a cab to Newark International Airport to board a flight to Milan, Italy for a press trip centered around the Formula One Grand Prix in Imola, a small city near Bologna and Florence. From EWR to MXP, the flight is about 8 hours. From there, we were to take a 2- to 3-hour car ride from Milan to our hotel, Borgo Condé, about an hour from the track. In total, that would’ve made my travel day somewhere around 10 hours, with the expectation of the same on the way back. Little did I know, though, that due to unprecedented flooding in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, I’d be traveling a whole lot more than just to and from the airport.

Due to the weather, we ended up moving to multiple hotels and houses, all of which were located in different parts of Northern Italy, making my time spent traveling reach well over the 20-hour time frame that I’d initially prepared for when I was packing my carry-on and personal item for the trip. But honestly, it didn’t matter. After years of planing, training, and automobiling for both work and pleasure, I’ve learned a thing or two about packing for any and all circumstances. From portable chargers—which seriously came in handy after my laptop and phone died without power to charge them—and expandable bags—a must if you plan to shop at all—to very necessary SPF and comfortable travel attire, scroll down to dig through my carry-on from my long and exhausting 20+ hour travel journey to and from Italy last week.

We Tried 9 Laundry Detergents, and Holy Sh*t, These Smell Like Expensive Perfume

I didn’t care about what was in my laundry detergent or what it smelled like for years. Like most folks, I’d buy whatever brand was at my local Target and would call it a day, but now, I’m changing all that in a big way. I’ve recently found several nontoxic detergents that clean my clothes well and smell so good that I actually thought they were expensive designer fragrances. I now actively look forward to laundry day (it really is the little things in life). I’m also not one to gatekeeper either so I just had to share these incredible detergents that I’ve been using and loving lately. And that’s not all—I roped the rest of the Who What Wear beauty team into trying a few more luxury-scented detergents for research purposes (obviously). Trust us, use one of these detergents on your clothes, and I swear someone might think you’re wearing Le Labo. Keep scrolling and read all our thoughts on our faves!

  • This Skincare Ingredient Fights Acne Like No Other

This Skincare Ingredient Fights Acne Like No Other

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates dead skin cells on the skin’s surface and decreases oil and sebum, says board-certified dermatologist Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip, MD, FAAD, owner of Vibrant Dermatology and SkinBar MD. In addition to being an exfoliant, it also works as a comedolytic and anti-inflammatory ingredient.

“As an oil-soluble ingredient that can absorb into the lipid skin layers more readily, it can penetrate deeper into the skin and the pores,” explains Y. Claire Chang, a board-certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology. “It exfoliates and brightens skin complexion as well as de-clogs pores to prevent blackheads, whiteheads, and subsequent acne breakouts. Salicylic acid not only helps to prevent and clear active acne, but it can also improve acne blemishing.”

And because salicylic acid exfoliates so well, it can also help your topical products better penetrate the skin, which Chang says can be useful in treating conditions like psoriasis. The hardworking ingredient can also be used as a peeling agent for acne vulgaris, melasma, photodamage, sunspots, psoriasis, and warts.

  • I Don’t Usually Use Makeup-Remover Wipes, But I Recommend These 13 in a Pinch

    I Don’t Usually Use Makeup-Remover Wipes, But I Recommend These 13 in a Pinch

The answer, while a major topic of debate among beauty enthusiasts and experts alike, can be found in science. New York state licensed esthetician, laser technician, onocology esthetician, and and owner of Blue Water Spa, Rachel Lee Lozina, broke down the sometimes elusive facts. “Most makeup removers contain harmful ingredients such as alcohol & sodium laurel sulfate which strips the skin of the natural oils and can compromise the barrier, which in turn can cause dryness, acne and irritated skin.”

According to Lozina, a vastly better and more effective alternative are oils since they emulsify makeup.”They are harmful because you aren’t rinsing these ingredients off at the end of the day. Properly washing your skin and removing these ingredients are integral for healthy skin,” Lozina explains. Additionally, the main chemicals in makeup wipes, sulfates and alcohol along with other preservatives and chemicals are the main ingredients in a majority of the makeup remover wipe products available on the market.

So where does that leave us? If you do decide to continue using makeup-remover wipes, plan on following with an oil-based cleanser for the best results. Below, discover 13 of the makeup wipes you can trust to get the job done (partially) while on-the-move before a double cleanse can take care of the rest.

  • I’ve Had an Uneven Skin Tone for Years—This Cult-Loved Serum Corrected It

I’ve Had an Uneven Skin Tone for Years—This Cult-Loved Serum Corrected It

I’m going to be honest. I’ve always been slightly lackadaisical in my approach to skincare. Well, that was until about five years ago—in my early 30s—when I saw huge changes in my skin tone and complexion. You see, in my early 20s, I was spoilt with compliments about how clear, bright, and glowing my skin was. Since I barely used any skincare products of note and my regimen consisted simply of cleansing and moisturizing, I boiled it down to genetics. My Latin American mother has amazingly smooth and radiant skin to this day. My Welsh father, however, passed along his rosacea cheeks. While I always had a nice olive glow, my cheeks flared red when triggered by specific factors.

In my 20s, I thought I was invincible! I didn’t pay much attention to my skin. I barely wore sunscreen. This is coming from someone who spent a large part of her 20s traveling outdoors for work and basically lived under the sun—without sunscreen. (Ugh, if only I could turn back time!) Fast-forward 10 years, and I have plenty of sunspots to show for it.

On top of this, I’ve had two babies in the past four years, which has been an absolute joy, but my skin has unquestionably taken a toll. I never knew just how much my skin would change after getting pregnant. Suddenly, I had pregnancy spots, or melasma—a common condition that causes skin hyperpigmentation (i.e. darkening). While it was mild and calmed slightly after pregnancy, I still have spots of slight discoloration. Add lack of sleep, stress, and a not-so-well-balanced, caffeine-heavy diet into the mix, and my skin has never looked so inflamed and uneven in tone and texture. Others couldn’t notice the change that much (thank god for makeup), but when I looked in the mirror sans makeup, I hardly recognized myself.

On a mission to get my uneven skin back on track, I actively sought out skincare products that could reduce my dark spots, improve my overall skin tone, and get my glow back. Call it kismet, but that week at a fashion event, I received a gift bag that had a little miracle in a white pot staring right at me—Caudalie’s Vinoperfect Radiance Dark Spot Serum Vitamin C Alternative. I looked up the product immediately, and after reading countless positive reviews about the cult-loved serum, I tried it. I’m on my third bottle now and have never looked back. I’m still astounded at how much it has improved my skin’s complexion. Below, I’ll be taking you through the ins and outs of the serum and delving into what makes it so good. Let’s get into it.

An Honest Review of Sunday Riley’s 9 Buzziest Products

Smartly crafted formulas that are clinically backed, nontoxic ingredients, beautiful graphic packaging, and clever product names are just a few of the qualities that have earned skincare brand Sunday Riley its cult status. Consistently a Sephora best seller, the results-driven luxury line is always generating hype and flying off shelves. But are Sunday Riley’s buzzy moisturizers, serums, and oils (which aren’t exactly cheap, mind you) worth all the attention and dough?

Who What Wear beauty director Erin Jahns and I were skeptical (as we always are of skincare brands whose products have unabashed cult followings and high price tags), so we put 10 of its best sellers to the test. For context, Erin has sensitive acne-prone skin, and I’m a true combo skin type. (I’ve got both congested pores and dryness to navigate.) I’m a Beauty Editor With a Knack for Faking Super-Thick Hair—Here’s How

But my hair didn’t always look like this (it used to be shoulder-length, ultra-dry, and V thin and stringy due to breakage), and I attribute its dramatic transformation to a couple of key practices like less heat styling, an amazing colorist who prioritizes the health and integrity of my hair above all else, a healthy and balanced diet, regular trims, and last but not least, volumizing shampoos and conditioners.

Interestingly, I’ve found that volumizing shampoos and conditioners, more so than any other volume-boosting styling products, help the most in the thickening department. (Plus, I’m lazy, so if I can get the most volumizing bang for my buck while in the shower and not via a million other products post-wash), I’m 100% in.
