I’m Making No Mistakes This Summer—38 Basics I Know I Won’t Regret Buying

If you’re anything like me, you probably have summer on the brain right now. Typically, the first thing I shop for when a new season is upon us is versatile basics. • These 4 Influencers Are Also Brand Founders—28 Items That Keep Them Chic

These 4 Influencers Are Also Brand Founders—28 Items That Keep Them Chic

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was always a terrible employee (ha ha). I say that lightheartedly, but I guess I just knew I’d always be my own boss. I grew my platform to a place I felt where I was ready to start a venture separate to the personal business and brand I had been working so hard at for years. I don’t take having this platform for granted. I’m so grateful for the community that I’ve built, and I’d be insane not to bring more value to them with tangible items I know they’d love and be able to enjoy on such a personal level. Because they’ve been through this journey with me, they now get to be involved in something so special to us all.

    Why olives?

Olives have always been special to me. You could almost say [they’re] an obsession. I felt an untapped niche where I knew I could bring value and become an expert in. My community has followed along my journey and know that this is something so organic and true to myself, and that’s why it felt right. Olives have been at the center of my dining table, in my cocktails on evenings out with friends, and my favorite go-to late-night snack. I wanted to share my love of olives with everyone but introduce an intermix of all of my passions from fashion, beauty, and travel to create the perfect aesthetic jar for your photos with premium, delicious olives inside for my fellow olive lovers to enjoy.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a founder and creator?

Starting this journey in a new industry that I was unfamiliar with has definitely widened my scope on the food industry, and I have learned so much along the way. With all the lessons learned, late nights, brainstorming sessions with my team, and figuring out the logistics of how to bring By Emma Rose to life, I am truly so proud of what my team and I have accomplished. Having this be my true passion project in life has motivated me in ways and brought out other skill sets in me that I didn’t know I had in me!

As for being a creator, the biggest challenge I have had to overcome is creating a healthy work/life balance. While running my own personal platform and creating multiple startup businesses, it has definitely made me busier than I have ever been. I would love to say I have it all figured out, but that’s something I’m still constantly working on and will, I think, be a work in progress forever.

What do you see coming next for you and your business?

I have many exciting plans for this spring and summer that I cannot wait to share with everyone! With the recent launch of By Emma Rose, we have some mouth-watering new launches, adding new categories, and super-fun events that I can’t wait to see come to life.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to become a founder themselves?

The advice I would give to an aspiring entrepreneur is to be genuine and true to yourself and what you want to share with others. When you’re passionate about something and truly believe in the product or item, you will have so much fun with the creative process and want to be fully involved and devoted to your business. If you are consistent and work hard, I believe that you will be rewarded with the success you so truly deserve.

You are known not only for being a founder and a force to be reckoned with in the social media world but also for having epic personal style. What items do you trust to make you look your chicest?

I’m a big believer in taking risks with your wardrobe while also honoring your personal style and what inspires you. My go-to items that I trust to make me look my chicest are a good pair of comfortable heeled boots that you can interchange with your outfits, good basics that you can rely on, a pair of comfortable heels that you can dance the night away in without regretting your footwear choice in the morning, a pair of black trousers that are great to dress up and down, a long leather jacket to wear on your nights out, and, lastly, a comfortable, trusty pair of denim.

I Like Clothes That Are Simple Yet Elevated—These Nordstrom Items Caught My Eye

If I’m being honest, I think I speak for all of us when I say the wardrobe goal of 2023 is a closet full of simple yet elevated clothing that you can mix and match throughout the seasons. Great basics are essential to a sustainable and cost-effective wardrobe, and when I’m looking to add more Nordstrom is my go-to.

As a former Nordstrom stylist, I remember spending time with clients emphasizing the power of a great basic—blazers you can style with jeans, dresses, and miniskirts; racerback tank tops and bodysuits you can pair with trousers; low-rise denim; and high-slit midi skirts. I’m Freaking Over These 50 Nordstrom Items That Are Chic But Not Crazy Trendy

If you’re looking for a bunch of really great stuff, you’ve landed in the right spot. That’s right. 8 Outfits That Prove This Affordable Basic Should Be Your Number One Purchase RN

While a tank top might not be the most exciting of fashion items, the humble basic should never be underestimated. Its sartorial power lies in its simplicity—reliable, effortless, and unequivocally cool—it’s one of the most loved staples among the fashion set, adding a cool touch to so many different outfits.

A basic tank never really goes out of style, but it’s certainly having a moment right now thanks partly to its large presence on the S/S 23 runways and the fact that so many fashion people are centering their outfits around the simple basic. Plenty of luxury brands are serving up their own covetable iterations of the staple (hello, Prada and Loewe) but you definitely don’t need to spend a fortune to add it into your look.

Now that summer is right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to give your tank an upgrade—whether you go for a ’90s-square neckline or a plunging scoop silhouette. For plenty of inspiration on how to style yours this spring/summer season we’re sharing 8 cool tank top outfits that prove this affordable basic should be your number one purchase right now.

  • 31 Chic Black Basics Nearly Every Fashion Person Will Be Wearing This Summer

31 Chic Black Basics Nearly Every Fashion Person Will Be Wearing This Summer

I may be in the fashion minority here, but I actually get quite tired of bright colors and white dresses in the summer. I’m more than happy to unironically wear an all-black outfit in the middle of July. I’m also more likely to pair colorful pieces with black basics than I am with white ones. I was thrilled to see lots of warm-weather black looks on the spring/summer 2023 runways, and it’s putting me in the mood to refresh my summer basics even more so.

If you’re someone who also likes to wear black in the summer, you’re probably aware that wearing it in full sun when it’s over 90° isn’t optimal. That’s why it’s important to shop for basics that are made of cotton poplin, linen, silk, and lightweight knit. There are plenty of options to choose from right now, so I narrowed them down to only the chicest.

Keep scrolling to shop my picks for the best black basics to prepare your wardrobe for summer.

I Need to Upgrade My Basics—40 Under-$90 Nordstrom Styles That Have My Attention

  • I’m Moving From SoHo to the UWS—12 Items I’m Leaving Behind Downtown

I’m Moving From SoHo to the UWS—12 Items I’m Leaving Behind Downtown

In 2020, I packed up my apartment in Brooklyn, New York and moved into an alarmingly small apartment in SoHo, where I stuffed 50+ pairs of shoes, at least 20 handbags, and give or take 15 coats—and then there was all the actual clothing. Two years and plenty of late-night Balthazar dinners, Sunday afternoon shopping breaks, and early-morning breakfasts at Fiat Cafe later, I did the whole packing up thing all over again, this time to move out of downtown and onto the Upper West Side. It was exciting and all, that is, until I realized just how much stuff I’d acquired over the past 730 days.

Ahead of the move—which I always insist on doing sans movers with only a UHaul and my boyfriend to assist me—I knew I’d have to do some serious clearing house. But instead of doing what I usually do when I’m gearing up for a major donation haul—which involves trying everything I own on and making a split-second yes or no decision about its fate—I, instead, came up with an assessment. To pass said test, my existing wardrobe items had to feel elevated, versatile, and chic enough that if I had to pop into Ralph Lauren’s Upper East Side flagship store, Cafe Luxembourg on West 70th, or any of the many entertainment options available at Lincoln Center at a moments notice, I wouldn’t feel underdressed or like I’d wished I had gone home to change. As such, many pieces got the boot, from actual boots (goodbye lug soles, hello stilettos) to cropped tanks and cargo pants.

Scroll down to learn the other 9 trends I left behind downtown (and the ones I’m bringing instead).

  • The *One* Anti-Trend Piece I Buy, Wear, and Pack on Repeat

The *One* Anti-Trend Piece I Buy, Wear, and Pack on Repeat

I’m not someone who holds onto things in their wardrobe that they don’t wear. I suppose that’s in part due to the size of my apartment, which doesn’t exactly allow for excess. But it’s also largely tied to my dedication to stocking my closet only with pieces I love and want to wear on repeat. And of all the items stored in there, the ones that arguably get the most attention are my trench coats—hands down. I have no shame in admitting that I play favorites.

In the winter, I wear them layered with hoodies and knitwear, while the spring and summer see my lightweight versions worn with slip dresses or simple jeans-and-tee ensembles. I bring one with me on practically every trip, no matter the location, and have a problem not buying one when a chic, new silhouette hits the market. I’m obsessed (clearly), and there’s nothing you can say or do to convince me otherwise. As for what allows me to keep on wearing them so frequently without tiring, I maintain an ever-refreshed moodboard full of trench-coat outfit inspiration, and my latest one was too good not to share.

  • 36 Shockingly Chic Basics From Madewell, Gap, and J.Crew That Look So Expensive

36 Shockingly Chic Basics From Madewell, Gap, and J.Crew That Look So Expensive

When I hear the phrase “spring cleaning”, I’m reminded of how badly I need to apply that to my closet, as I’m out of hangers (that’s how I know). So I did. And I noticed the same thing I notice every time I clean my closet—it’s seriously lacking in good basics. I’m someone that’s much quicker to buy a pair of It shoes or a cute top than to stock up on basics, so I’ve been on a recent mission to make up for lost shopping time this season.

I took to three of my favorite old-school retailers for basics in search of the most versatile, expensive-looking ones. I think you’ll be pleased to discover that thanks to Madewell, Gap, and J.Crew, you don’t need to spend more than $100 to get a great basic. 7 Spring Basics That Are Exceptionally Trendy This Year

What we often forget when it comes to fashion is that a trend doesn’t necessarily mean an item is entirely new. You don’t need a new wardrobe each season to be trendy. In fact, the best trends are often old ones that come back, fresh ways to style a staple piece, or the amplification of a basic we already own but maybe haven’t paid that much attention to lately. Not so coincidentally, this story is about exactly those last types of pieces—spring basics that happen to be exceptionally trendy this year.

From woven bags to trench coats, these are items you should already have in your closet but will likely wear now more than ever. Of course, if you don’t have them or are simply in the mood to upgrade them, I’ve rounded up my favorites for each category. Keep scrolling to see what other basics made my list, shop each one, and take in some outfit inspiration along the way.

  • I Asked My Fashion Friends Which Skims Pieces Are Actually Life-Changing

I Asked My Fashion Friends Which Skims Pieces Are Actually Life-Changing

Lately, it feels like I can’t go one conversation about either basics and shapewear without someone raving about Skims. The funny thing is, I have not yet tried the popular brand, so I have admittedly felt a little out of the loop. This left me asking my circle of fashion friends which of the pieces they swear by. Sure enough, most of them are die-hard fans and even collectors. This, of course, is no surprise with the incredible rise of Skims.

A huge reason for that success, according to my friends, is the fact that all the pieces provide comfort without sacrificing style, thanks to the practical and effortless designs that are made in soft fabrics. We’re talking comfy thongs, versatile tops and body suits, cotton basics, effective shapewear, and so much more. Another welcome detail: the collections come in a wide range of sizes, which is always appreciated. Keep scrolling to check out thirty-one of the best Skims pieces to check out now.

I Woke Up At 6am to Shop Gap’s Epic Sale—These 19 Basics Were Worth No Sleep

Sale season is all about strategy. On the luxury side, the key is to scout the items you want during the introductory discounts and then watch as they dip in price, only following through on the purchase when there’s just one SKU left in your size. For lower-price retailers or brands, my personal approach is to focus on basics, using the cheap prices as an opportunity to stock up on pieces I frequent that have a tendency to wear down over time. Such was my plan of action when I heard murmurs about a major sale on the cards at Gap, which just so happens to have started today.

As we speak, Gap is doling out 40% and additional 10% discounts when you use the codes GAPVIP and PERK, respectively, at checkout, making it all too easy to re-up my faded-from-winter basics ahead of the warm weather (and yours too). So, of course, I woke up unbearably early to shop the selection before all the best items and colors, not to mention my sizes, sell out. See which basics I’m buying in bulk for spring and summer and shop the sale, which ends on April 30, below.

This Boring $15 Basic Just Became the Hottest Buy, Thanks to the Fall Runways

If there was only one theme I could tell you about from the fall/winter 2023 collections, it would have to the focus on wearability. Across the runways, designers put renewed focus on those foundational pieces that build a strong wardrobe and it was a great reminder of the power that these classic basics hold as well as a wealth of inspiration on how to style them in cool new ways. Perhaps the best example of this movement is with an item so benign and overlooked that it’s almost silly to call it a trend: tights.

Boring as they may be, runway looks that featured tights where everywhere we looked this season, from established brands like Gucci, Versace, and Miu Miu to emerging labels including Luar and Puppets and Puppets, and it points to a major reinvention of the top-drawer mainstay. Calling it now: classic tights are in their comeback era. Not only your run-of-the-mill black tights, though, but fishnets, lace, and colored pairs are also undergoing a brand. Ahead, we’re breaking down the five cool tights styles that will be trending hardest for fall and pointing out the new styling ideas to try out, too.

  • Handbags Look Way More Expensive In This Color, IMHO

Handbags Look Way More Expensive In This Color, IMHO

You can easily find the definition of a word like luxury by cracking open a dictionary. However, explaining its meaning within the context of our relationship with fashion is entirely different. Sure, there are the items one would define as luxurious (e.g., a designer handbag), but that’s within the lens of how the industry defines it. In truth, definitions of what affluence looks like don’t always consider the nuances of each individual’s economic means or the priorities of each shopper.

After all, some may consider being able to afford new clothing, much less a trendy handbag, an extravagance. At the same time, others may have to save up for or search for discounts to afford a designer handbag. Whatever the case, it’s safe to say that how we define what’s “expensive” depends on our own experiences. But even within that tailored lens, there are certain choices any consumer can make to get the most bang for their buck. Beyond investing in pieces that appreciate, one can make an even more straightforward stylistic choice by opting for a brown handbag.

Hear me out: Brown bags always look expensive, no matter their actual price. As with black handbags, this “boring” bag color is timeless and versatile. While it may not be as exciting as a brightly-hued bag, there’s something to be said about how this color can come in every shade and silhouette and still look stylish. To prove just how universally lavish this color can be, I scoured the internet to find the 45 best brown handbags. In my humble opinion, these are the cremé de la cremé due to their wearability, price, quality, brand name, and trendiness. Consider this an invitation to redefine your relationship with this color.
