  • I Can't Stop Listening To This Song From Saltburn

I Can't Stop Listening To This Song From Saltburn

    [ad_1]

By now, you should have seen Saltburn. One of the most viral moments of 2023 came at the very end of the year when Emerald Fennell’s film hit Amazon Prime Video. Starring two of Hollywood’s favorite leading men, Jacob Elordi as Felix and Barry Keoghan as Oliver, the movie is both appalling and captivating. I describe it as like watching a car accident: the events taking place so vile that you can’t help but stare at the damage.

And forget about the infamous bathtub scene (the only thing I knew to expect from the film) or even the graveyard scene (the thing I did not expect in my wildest dreams)…I’m constantly replaying one scene: the final one where Oliver Quick has finally overtaken the estate and can dance around naked. By this point in the movie, my jaw had permanently resided on the floor…but this scene made me want to get up and dance too.

It’s thanks to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s 2001 song “Murder On The Dance Floor”, which is having a spike in popularity similar to Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) after playing in Stranger Things. On New Year’s Eve alone, “Murder On The Dance Floor” had its biggest streaming date on Spotify with 1.5 million plays and entered the Global Spotify Chart for the first time at no. 130.

    In the week after
Saltburn’s theater release on November 22, streaming increased over 360% for the song and 340% for Ellis-Bextor’s Read My Lips album. It was a song that perfectly juxtaposed the dark message behind the film- which was riddled with comic relief and short, witty quips to satirically add to the mood.

“Murder On The Dance Floor” should be on everyone’s playlist this week…For more

  • Disney+ Hulu App Will Leapfrog Netflix On Popularity & Volume In The U.S., Says Report

Disney+ Hulu App Will Leapfrog Netflix On Popularity & Volume In The U.S., Says Report

    [ad_1]

The combined Disney+ Hulu app will leapfrog Netflix on both popularity and volume in the U.S., according to a report from Ampere Analysis.

One-third of the 100 most popular Q3 titles in their home market were on Disney+ and Hulu, Ampere found, with 17 on the former and 16 on the latter, placing the pair at the top of the popularity pile. Netflix’s figure sits a few lower at 29, with Max in third on 18 and Amazon Prime Video lagging behind on 11. Ampere measures popularity based on key metrics such as volume of interest, web traffic and box office income from major services such as Google, Wikipedia, and IMDb.

Meanwhile in terms of volume, Disney+ and Hulu will shoot above Netflix to become the second most populous streamer with 9,578 titles, with Hulu holding the majority, 7,250. The combined app is ahead of Netflix by more than 1,000 and second only to Prime, even with the 300 titles set to be removed following Disney+’s buyout of Comcast’s Hulu stake. Given that the Disney+ Hulu app doesn’t launch for several months, these figures could change.

Disney+ and Hulu bring together the might of the likes of the new Star Wars movies and TV series, Pixar pics and Hulu hits such as Only Murders in the Building and American Horror Story. Disney+’s content strategy relies on its strong children and family content portfolio and tentpole sci-fi releases from major franchises. These would represent 81% of the top 100 most popular titles on the combined platform, Ampere said, while Hulu’s content library would complement Disney+’s as it includes underserved Disney+ genres such as crime, romance and horror. Disney+ already features some of the Hulu library in international markets under the Star banner.

As of October 2023, Hulu had more subscribers than Disney+ in the U.S. According to Ampere’s consumer survey, 44% of U.S. Hulu subscribers already have access to Disney+, largely due to bundles offering both platforms plus ESPN.

“With a combined app offering Disney+ and Hulu due to launch in the U.S. in early 2024, its compelling new streaming content offer will surely shake up the status quo,” said Ampere analyst Joshua Rustage.

“The combined Disney+ and Hulu catalogue will provide one of the most well-rounded and popular offerings in a single platform, upping the content stakes at a time when many are pulling back on content investment. Rivals will have to ensure their offerings remain competitive as the battle for viewing time intensifies, especially as the need to pull in advertising dollars is now also central to the streaming mix.”

Earlier this week, Disney added Hulu as a sixth vertical on the home screen of Disney+ with an integrated “one-app experience” launching in beta. The apps will be combined in earnest next March. The launch scheme, initially announced last month during Disney’s quarterly earnings call, comes as Disney is in the process of buying out Comcast’s one-third stake in Hulu and becoming its full owner. It has had 100% operational control of Hulu since 2019.

  • Ex-Member of Alleged Twin Flame Cult Shares What Drew Her In – and Why She Left – POPSUGAR Australia

Ex-Member of Alleged Twin Flame Cult Shares What Drew Her In – and Why She Left – POPSUGAR Australia

    [ad_1]

When she first discovered the Twin Flames Universe, Rai was in the midst of a time-honored tradition: the post-breakup healing journey. “I was looking for help and tips on getting over someone,” she tells POPSUGAR. “I was having a lot of trouble.”

She wound up getting a lot more than she bargained for. Twin Flames Universe, an organization founded by self-proclaimed spiritual gurus Jeff and Shaleia Ayan, brands itself as a group that can help members find true love and spiritual transformation. Using Facebook groups, video courses, and coaching programs, Jeff and Shaleia promise that every Twin Flames Universe member will achieve what they themselves claim they have: a divinely ordained, transcendent love that spans lifetimes. However, former members say otherwise.

Twin Flames Universe is the subject of the Prime Video documentary “Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe,” which explores the group’s origins as well as the allegedly manipulative tools it uses to coerce members into performing free labor, paying large sums for courses, undergoing gender transitions, and even crossing oceans in order to stalk ex-partners. Jeff and Shaleia did not respond to the documentary producers’ repeated requests for comment. They also did not respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment.

Rai, who asked to be identified by a nickname in order to protect her privacy, had never even heard of the concept of twin flames before she joined the group. She would quickly learn that the concept of twin flames is based on the idea that everyone has another half of their soul walking the earth. According to generic twin flame dogma, connections with these other halves can often be volatile and painful; twin flames can act as mirrors, reflecting and amplifying one’s vulnerabilities and fears. In a typical twin flame union, there’s a “runner” and a “chaser,” and internet forums are full of posts about twin flames that sound more like rationalizations of toxic and one-sided relationships than love stories. Yet the concept has taken off in recent years, in part thanks to couples like Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, who have repeatedly spoken (and sung) about being twin flames – and, of course, the Twin Flames Universe.

Jeff and Shaleia, who say they’re twin flames, launched Twin Flames Universe in the mid-2010s and quickly scaled their business. Today, the still-active group charges as much as $8,888 for access to coaching, videos, and training programs that allow members to become coaches themselves. Rai didn’t join the Twin Flames Universe because she wanted to find the other half of her soul or even because she was looking for love, though. “They were talking about self-development, which is really what drew me in,” she recalls, saying she was particularly drawn to the group’s emphasis on self-love.

Rai’s first introduction to the group was a meeting with an “Ascension Coach,” who seemed “so happy, so peaceful” and gave her “examples of how Jeff and Lee’s program had really changed her life.” Self-love, personal growth, and big promises are often initial selling points for cults like NXIVM and Scientology, which often lure members in with generic rational concepts and only later reveal their more extreme teachings.

Rai was also drawn to the group because it offered access to a community. The moment she joined the Twin Flames Universe’s private Facebook group, Rai says she was flooded with hundreds of supportive and loving messages. She quickly began engaging in discussions and meet-ups, where members would mostly discuss their spiritual journeys. A spiritual seeker herself, Rai valued the opportunity to talk about god and philosophy with like-minded people. As for the whole twin flame aspect, “I didn’t think very deeply about it, I’ll be honest,” she says. “I was just curious.”

And yet even at that time, there were subtle red flags she only noticed in hindsight. “People would approach me every day, at every point, asking, ‘Have you thought about joining the Ascension Coaching program? Have you thought about doing this?’” Rai says. She would later realize that these people were apparently under pressure from Jeff and Shaleia to recruit new paying customers and coaches.

Rai eventually paid for a month of access to Twin Flames Ascension School. After her first month, she says she was asked to become an Ascension Coach to train other people in the art of working towards “harmonious twin flame union” – Jeff and Shaleia’s ultimate promise. Rai saw the job as just another form of life coaching, and she signed up for the group’s Ascension Coaching training program, which currently costs $4,999.

During trial sessions with potential clients, Rai began to understand the reality of the demographic that Twin Flames Universe was targeting. “They either lived alone, had no friends, or had gone through some sort of traumatic situation that meant that they either detached themselves or disassociated from whatever the reality of their life was at the time,” Rai says. Sometimes, she wanted to tell people that what they really needed to do was go outside and connect with others in the real world. But in the increasingly insular and all-consuming world of the Twin Flames Universe, there was no reason to venture off screen.

“If you invest your whole self into it, it becomes a world within itself,” she notes. “If you join the Ascension Coaching program, that’s your job, and that takes care of your life purpose. Your Twin Flames community becomes your friends, so that takes care of your social life.” And of course, there was the holy grail: finding one’s twin.

Early on in her involvement with the group, Rai, still recovering from her breakup, posted a photo of herself and her ex in the Twin Flames Universe Facebook group. Rai says Jeff, who had never engaged directly with her before at the time, told her that her ex was indeed her twin flame. Rai also claims that Jeff said she was “on the right track,” but had “a lot of blocks” and “a long way to go.” “I was very confused as to how he could make that judgment so quickly – that I was still spiritually blocked or whatever he called it,” Rai explains. “That created an immediate anxiety in me.”

Still, she reached out to her ex and told him about the Twin Flames Universe and what Jeff had said, and the pair reconnected. Still, “it got kind of weird for me when they started inserting themselves in my life like that,” Rai says. “I thought it was just an online course that you could switch on and off.”

But the Twin Flames Universe was never intended to just be an online course. In addition to her training program, Rai began running some of the Twin Flames Universe social media accounts – for free, of course. She was also working with an Ascension Coach of her own, and every day, her coach would message her asking if she’d texted her designated twin flame or otherwise worked towards their union. The pressure to pursue her twin flame was becoming aggressive, but since it was all shrouded in so much love and light, it was hard to see. “It was subtle. . . . They wrapped it up in a lot of love and care,” Rai says of the group’s tactics. “They just love-bombed me into accepting these things by telling me how talented I was and that I should be doing this, and that this is my calling.”

Questioning Jeff’s initial judgment call about her ex, in her view, was never an option. “If I rejected it, it would become my fault,” she says. Doubt led to catch-22 questions like, “Why are you not experiencing your good?” and “Do you not think you deserve to be loved?” Because Rai’s main goal in joining the Twin Flames Universe had always been to work on her self-love, being told that she wasn’t loving herself enough because she was rejecting her twin flame was particularly painful. There was, she claims, “a lot of mental manipulation.”

During her time in Twin Flames Universe, Rai also happened to meet someone new. She says Twin Flames Universe discouraged her from pursuing that relationship, though, saying she needed to be with her twin flame no matter what. Still, Rai’s doubts were growing. “‘I know Jeff confirmed it, but I don’t think this is the guy,’” Rai recalls thinking. She wanted to end things once and for all with her ex and focus on herself and her life. But in Twin Flames Universe, she says that wasn’t an option.

“I found it really uncomfortable that he was preaching that he was this spiritual, loving person. There were just too many weird signs and weird advice that he was giving.”

Fortunately, unlike so many of the group’s deeply isolated members, Rai wasn’t alone. Friends and family were starting to tell her that it seemed like she might be in a cult. Once she began investigating Twin Flames Universe from a more skeptical perspective, she started noticing warning signs. Jeff, in particular, was starting to unnerve her. He seemed like “a very angry person” who would take out his anger on others, she said. He also seemed fixated on money, often showing off his car and house and citing them as evidence that he had spiritually ascended in some way. “I found it really uncomfortable that he was preaching that he was this spiritual, loving person,” Rai says. “There were just too many weird signs and weird advice that he was giving.” Shaleia was also unnervingly quiet and seemed subservient to Jeff, though she reportedly was the one who developed most of Twin Flames Universe’s spiritual teachings in the first place, according to a 2020 Vanity Fair exposé.

According to Rai, she was often instructed to use a practice called the “mirror exercise,” which involved looking in the mirror and directing any angry or negative sentiments you were feeling towards someone else at yourself. If you were angry at someone else, you were supposed to realize that your anger was actually towards yourself. Jeff and Shaleia claimed that the exercise would make members aware that they were the source of their own problems and issues, but it’s easy to imagine how quickly that reframe could wear down any semblance of genuine anger or doubt. “Morally, that felt wrong,” Rai says. “At that point, that’s when I just felt like, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’”

A breaking point came when Jeff asked her to attend an in-person event in Canada along with her designated twin flame. She almost ended up going until her ex pointed out just how absurd the whole thing was. Rai began reflecting on just how deep she’d been sucked into the group and ultimately decided it was time to leave Twin Flames Universe. “As soon as I left the group and asked for my money back, Jeff was very aggressive towards me in texts,” Rai alleges, saying he repeatedly asked her why she was running away from love and god, especially when she was so close to achieving harmonious twin flame union. Still, she never went back.

Rai’s story is one of the less shocking tales to come out of Twin Flames Universe. Journalist Alice Hines, who wrote an exposé of the alleged cult for Vanity Fair in 2020 and is also centrally featured in “Desperately Seeking Soulmate,” interviewed a member who had spent a month in jail after being encouraged to stalk a twin flame who had filed a restraining order. Other members say Jeff and Shaleia encouraged them to pursue their exes no matter the cost. Additionally, numerous queer couples – many of them set up in the first place by Jeff and Shaleia – have said that they were pressured to undergo gender transitions while in Twin Flames Universe. According to Jeff and Shaleia, all twin flame unions have a divine masculine and a divine feminine aspect, and “Desperately Seeking Soulmate” explores several cases where Jeff seemingly tried to coerce female members into transitioning in order to fit into their divine masculine roles. Jeff and Shaleia denied all of the above allegations in the 2020 Vanity Fair article.

Today, over three years after the Vanity Fair exposé, Twin Flames Universe is very much still active. Rai says that in spite of everything, she still thinks the larger Twin Flames Universe community is a positive and loving place, and she really feels for the people who’ve been sucked in deep while seeking community, meaning, and love in an often lonely world. She also understands that people are attracted to Twin Flames Universe for the same reasons they’re often attracted to any religion or group that promises answers and salvation or redemption of any kind.

But she worries, she says, that Jeff and Shaleia are causing lasting damage to “people that are obviously very vulnerable and want validation that the world is a loving place.” Twin Flames Universe attracts people “that are looking for some kind of happiness somewhere in the world, and they’re offered that,” she says. But at the end of the day, “they’re still told they’re not good enough because they don’t have a boyfriend.”

Jurnee Smollett Makes a Boss Entrance as “The Python” in Exclusive “The Burial” Clip

    [ad_1]

Jurnee Smollett lets her résumé speak for itself in “The Burial.” In this exclusive look at the new movie, which hit theaters on Oct. 6, the “Lovecraft Country” actor stars as Mame Downes, a new power defense attorney who comes to town to go up against smooth-talking lawyer Willie E. Gary (played by Jamie Foxx). And by the sound of her track record, she’s nothing to play with.

Hearing of her college degree from Howard University, Foxx’s Willie, impressed, quips, “Oh, that mean she just ain’t a woman, she a Black woman.”

The clip then cuts to Smollett’s Mame as she struts through an airport with luggage in hand and a pair of black shades covering her stone-cold look. She means business. Meanwhile, junior counselor Hal (Mamoudou Athie) continues to run off her accomplishments: “Graduated top of her class from Harvard Law School, Jesus Christ.” Now, currently the youngest partner ever at her law firm, it’s clear Mame has her eyes set on victory by any means necessary — her nickname says so.

“Friend of mine used to work with her over at CBNA,” one lawyer shares, “and um, well, he told me they had a nickname for her around the office: The Python.”

“The Burial” is a true-life-inspired courtroom drama, in which funeral homeowner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) enlists charismatic attorney Willie to save his family business after a handshake deal gone bad. While going up against the powers that be, the pair bond as they expose corporate corruption and racial injustice in this triumphant tale. The film also stars Pamela Reed, Bill Camp, and Alan Ruck.

Sign up for Amazon Prime Video now and stream “The Burial” starting on Oct. 13.

  • “Sitting in Bars With Cake”: A Portrait of Platonic Love for the Loneliness Epidemic

“Sitting in Bars With Cake”: A Portrait of Platonic Love for the Loneliness Epidemic

    [ad_1]

If you were in a bar, on a night out, and two girls offered you a slice of cake, would you eat it?

While this could be the premise of a Chuck Palahniuk novel (Cake, a sequel to Choke, perhaps?) or an A24 psychological thriller about eating and intimacy or something equally uncanny, the reality is in fact … based on reality.

Based on true events, Sitting in Bars with Cake tells the story of two 24-year-olds in Los Angeles: Corinne (Odessa A’Zion), the outgoing aspiring agent, and Jane (Yara Shahidi), her wallflower roommate, childhood best friend, and aspiring lawyer.

What is Sitting in Bars with Cake about?

When Jane — who prefers to spend her nights listening to podcasts, studying for the LSAT, and baking whole cakes as stress relief (I could never) — brings a home-baked birthday cake for Corrinne to a karaoke bar, a tradition is born. To force her shy friend out of her shell and to meet new people (especially guys) all around Los Angeles, they invent the concept of Cake Barring. Aka: sitting in bars with cake.

This quirky icebreaker brings together their friends, makes them new friends, and, most importantly, signifies a new era for the best friend pair. Things are looking bright and delicious. Until Corrine gets diagnosed with cancer.

Suddenly, the pair are braving hospital rooms together and it seems like the cake barring must come to an end. But Corrine, insisting that she needs joy now more than ever, won’t let it. Thus, a year of cake in bars and tears in hospital rooms.

This new feature film from Amazon Prime Studios is heartwarming and refreshing. It feels realistically youthful — for example, the 24-year-olds actually talk like 24-year-olds —but also wise beyond their years.

Who stars in Sitting in Bars with Cake?

This whimsical tale is anchored by standout performances by Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’Zion. Neither of the pair are new actors. Shahidi has been acting since childhood in films like Butter and The Sun is Also a Star but is best known for her starring roles in black-ish and grown-ish. A’Zion is a rising star in the indie circuit in films like Fresh Kills and Hellraiser, plus a starring role in the sitcom Fam and the Netflix drama Grand Army.

Yet, I can’t help but feel like Sitting in Bars with Cake is a reintroduction to both actors. Shahidi’s performance is understated and mature, while A’Zion steals every scene with her magnetism and charm. Together, their chemistry creates the foundations of the friendship that we root for through its highs and lows. I see myself in them both, but most of all, I see my friends — which is the true feat of this film.

How Sitting in Bars with Cake teaches us about friendship

Remember when the young adult film and literature genres were saturated with tales of kids falling in love in cancer wards? This film grounds the genre in reality rather than romance. It’s a tale of friendship, of growth, and resonates more than ever due to the phenomenon the media is calling the “friendship epidemic.”

The premise is this: we all have fewer friends and, to take it further, we’re all worse friends than generations past. The obvious thing to blame here is the pandemic year. Many people moved away from their friends, either temporarily or permanently, and most of us were separated with limited to no contact with our friends for over a year. Then, with the rise of remote work and our deeply set reliance on conveniences like food delivery and online shopping, people have less occasion to see friends with no more work and fewer nights out to restaurants.

This is underscored by the shifting cultural norms about what friendship is — and what it isn’t. Every week a new debate surfaces all over social media: should you ask your friends to help you move? Should you ask your friends to Venmo you for gas? Should you offer guests food in your home?

And, as we redraw the lines around what relationships should look like, the influx of “therapy speak” (aka people weaponizing clinical language for self-serving purposes) is letting people get away with toxic behavior in the name of boundaries. All this to say, you could never make Friends now — they would’ve spent the whole time on that coffee store couch worrying about how to split the bill.

However, if you look deeper, you can see that this shift didn’t start with the pandemic. It didn’t even start with social media. Society has been trending towards loneliness for decades. According to Robert D. Putnam in the 2000 book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, Putnam writes about how we have become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, and neighbors.

Putnam says people sign fewer petitions, belong to fewer organizations that meet, know their neighbors less, meet with friends less frequently, and even socialize with their families less often. We’re even bowling alone. And this book came out before social media really took over — so imagine the state of our social lives now.

Call it a symptom of late-stage capitalism. Call it part of the inevitable apocalypse. But it can be easy to feel hopeless about the state of our friendships. And to feel like you should have more and closer friends. Everybody feels like that, probably.

But movies like Sitting in Bars with Cake remind us that, at their core, these relationships are about love. And how powerful platonic love can be.

This film is a portrait of a symbiotic relationship — both parties taking care of each other the ways they know how. They both give and give and give to each other without keeping score or asking for anything in return. They operate on the unsaid understanding that their problems are not a burden and that their friends want the best for them — even when they’re struggling or even in the middle of a fight.

This inspiring narrative is an emotional tour de force — not because of the cancer of it all. But because, like a grown-up version of a Disney movie, it reminds us of the power of friendship (the crowd awws).

So grab a friend and watch this film for a cozy night in, sharing a cake with your friends. Perfect for fall.

  • Ads are coming to Amazon Prime Video — or you can escape them for a fee – National | Globalnews.ca

Ads are coming to Amazon Prime Video — or you can escape them for a fee – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Amazon Prime Video customers will soon start seeing ads while streaming movies and shows, unless, of course, they want to pay more for their subscription.

Customers in Canada will begin seeing advertisements in “early 2024,” the tech giant announced Friday, but did not give an exact date for the switch.

“To continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time, starting in early 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements,” the company said in its statement, adding that it will “aim to have meaningfully fewer ads” than traditional broadcasters or its rivals.

Subscribers will be able to opt out of seeing ads during their streaming sessions, provided they’re OK with forking over a bit more cash.

Netflix sees increase in subscribers, but revenue falls short of expectations

While a pricing plan hasn’t been announced for Canada (Global News reached out to Amazon and is awaiting a response), the company said it will roll out an ad-free tier for U.S. customers at an additional $2.99 per month.

    Story continues below advertisement

Currently, American Prime memberships cost $14.99 per month or $139 per year, while Canadians pay $9.99 per month and $99.99 per year.

Customers will get an email in the weeks leading up to the advertising rollout, which will include the option to sign up for the ad-free tier. Amazon says there will be no change to the current price of a Prime membership in 2024.

Live events and sports, however, will continue to feature ads in the ad-free tier, the company said in its announcement.

Amazon is just the latest streaming platform making the what-feels-like-inevitable move to include ads in their once ad-free services. Rival streamers Netflix, Disney+ and Crave all offer ad-supported tiers of service, at a lower cost.

The introduction of ad-supported streaming is just one of the ways media companies are trying to make their streaming businesses profitable — many have also implemented crackdowns on password sharing in recent years.

While Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor and Nitesh Tiwari have defended Bawaal, it looks like some are truly not impressed. As we know, the couple travel to all the World War II spots in Europe and their trip ends at the Nazi death camp in Auschwitz. There, they imagine the plight of the Jews who were exterminated by Hitler and decide to change their outlook towards life and marriage. Janhvi Kapoor tells Varun Dhawan that every relationship goes through its Auschwitz. The dialogue has made people see red. Many felt it was tone deaf to compare issues in a marriage to what is perhaps the worst crime against humanity. Rabbi Abraham Cooper of SWC has written a letter to Prime Video to take down the film. Now, the Israeli Embassy has put out a tweet that is is disturbed by the trivialization of the Holocaust in Bawaal. They have said that though it might be a well-intentioned movie, the use of terminology was not really appropriate. They urged Indians to educate themselves about the horrors of the Nazi regime and how lakhs of Jews were massacred.
