    Winter is just days away, and our chronically parched hands are already taking a big hit from these dry, frigid temps. Unlike the skin on our face, our hands are doing stuff all day long, be it typing up articles (hello), mastering the art of the spreadsheet, walking the dog, or enjoying a quiet, grandma hobby like crochet and needlepoint. And, as a result, they can get really dry—like, to the point of cracking. 

    To ward off these winter woes, you’ll need help from the best hand creams for super dry hands, and maybe a weekly mask and exfoliation, too.

    What Do Dermatologists Recommend for Extremely Dry Hands? 

    Extremely dry, cracked hands are uncomfortable (to say the least). Fortunately, there is a way to keep the itchy, burning sensations at bay and, ultimately, heal dry, cracked skin. “Dry, cracked hands require both barrier repair and a few tweaks to your daily habits,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, FAAD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Shafer Clinic in New York City. “I recommend getting a thick, ultra-nourishing hand cream and reapplying it consistently throughout the day, especially after every time you wash your hands.” 

    Additionally, Dr. Engelman says to slather on a generous layer—or even a thick occlusive like Aquaphor or Vaseline—then put on cotton gloves (like these from Clearbody Organics
    ) or socks to keep that moisture locked in overnight. “I also recommend avoiding very hot water, which can strip moisture from the skin [and] switch to a gentle, non-stripping, and moisturizing hand soap,” she adds. As a bonus, a weekly gentle exfoliation can ward off dry skin (we love the Lush Salted Coconut Hand Scrub) and “helps moisturizer penetrate more effectively.” 

    With all of that said, if your hands are painfully cracked or inflamed, Dr. Engelman says that these recommendations won’t help you. Instead, she recommends a low-strength steroid cream to calm the irritation and initiate healing (but a visit to your dermatologist is strongly advised). 

    How to Fix Really Dry & Cracked Hands

    While the above advice can help address dry skin on your hands, sometimes you need to up the ante a little as regular hand cream might not be enough to soften and soothe those mitts. “When the barrier is compromised from cold and dry air, handwashing, and/or over-sanitizing, you need something more intensive,” Dr. Engelman notes. “For patients who consistently struggle with dry hands, I recommend repairing the skin with hand masks and regularly applying thicker, more occlusive hand creams to keep the skin hydrated and soft.” 

    Dr. Engelman swears by the Aquaphor Hand Mask and Patchology Rosé Fingers Renewing Hand Mask as a weekly treatment for dry hands. “They bathe your hands in concentrated, occlusive serum while sealed inside treatment gloves, creating the perfect environment for deeper absorption, softening the skin, and barrier repair,” she explains, adding that hand masks are “one of the fastest and most effective ways to revive severely dry winter skin.”  

    In addition to these treatment plans, Dr. Engelman says to get in the habit of applying a thick and nourishing hand balm (such as the Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm) after washing your hands. “This will restore moisture and help protect your hands from transepidermal water loss and the effects of cold, dry winter air.”

    How Jeremy Allen White Got Ready for Another Big Win at the Emmys 2024

    Jeremy Allen White, whose winning streak now includes a best-actor trophy at the Emmys 2024, finally wore the closest thing to chef’s whites on Monday’s red carpet. His custom Armani suit conveyed a gentlemanly polish, every detail just so. The imagined Calvins underneath reverberated in the mind’s eye of his very devoted fan base. And above that pert black bow tie, White modeled his usual cherubic looks, skin youthfully aglow and tendrils coiled at his forehead.

    That visage and hair are the purview of KC Fee, the celebrity groomer who reconnected with White for The Bear’s season one premiere and has accompanied his wild ride ever since. Arguably there are similarities between the high-stress environment of a restaurant kitchen and the awards-season gauntlet. “This is something I’ve witnessed with all my clients: It’s an experience nobody knows unless they have to go through it,” Fee says. “There is a lot of wear and tear, and there’s a lot being asked of them. It can be draining, but at the same time, positive, wonderful things are happening.”

    That, in microcosm, sums up the scene at White’s house on Monday, where, amid the pre-show swirl of activity, the actor dipped into a state of relaxation. “My thing is I always do a very calming facial massage—doing a lot of still hand-placing on the face, and then working in the products,” says Fee, who used an array of Aesop skin care. First came the Parsley Seed serum, kneaded into the face and neck; the B Triple C gel, designed to help even the complexion, followed. The Seeking Silence hydrator locked in moisture. “Then I go in with some tinted moisturizer and concealer just to correct the skin tone and under-eyes and stuff like that”—an appreciated, if unseen, level of finesse for the camera.

    The unwind continues with White’s hair, as Fee multitasks a scalp massage while applying product. “At this point with his hair, I just intuitively feel what it’s doing when I show up and kind of go with it,” she says. “[Tonight] we leaned into the curls he had at the moment.” She singles out RŌZ’s Milk hair serum as a favorite, created by hairstylist Mara Roszak, whose own red-carpet weekend took her from Emma Stone for Critics Choice to Juno Temple for the Emmys. The lightweight leave-in can be cocktailed together with RŌZ’s Santa Lucia styling oil: “That’s what I use in my hair. I swear by them,” adds Fee.

    However much White’s own vibe is “super chill,” per the groomer—music playing and candles burning as he prepped for the Emmys—the internet is aflame after the recent Calvin Klein campaign dropped. “It’s hilarious. I have my [working] relationship with him, so when I see all this, it’s kind of like, ‘Okay, this feels weird!’” Fee laughs—a normal response when you catch sight of a colleague in their underwear. For now, with a break before next month’s SAG Awards, Fee will be cheering him on from afar and getting back to her day-to-day, with kids and a soon-to-arrive puppy. “I am the chef in my own life,” Fee says. “Everyone is ‘Yes, Chef’-ing me.”

    Aesop’s New, Comforting Fragrance: Why I’m Calling It Legendary

    Perfumes have the power to set a scene through scent. A good perfume can conjure up a place, a memory, or a specific moment with just one sniff. Most perfumes are grounded in reality, but what if a scent could take you to a foreign, otherworldly place?

    That’s the premise behind Aesop’s Othertopias collection, a range of fragrances inspired by both real and otherworldly experiences. The newest Othertopia scent, Gloam, is inspired by the tightrope between dreams and realities.

    Barnabé Fillion, perfumer and Aesop collaborator, explains that the bed boat was one of the main references for this fragrance—an object that acts as a passage between worlds real and imagined. “This is a jumping-off point for exploration, creating an intimate world in your mind. Laying down almost gives priority to your mind, removing the gravity we feel all day as we stand, which allows us to feel lighter both physically and spiritually. So it’s both a real space and the perceived space that comes about as a reaction to that.”

    The act of laying down is the crux of the scent. “With Gloam, we took a ‘horizontal’ approach to the scent, envisioning when we lie down—not sleeping, but somehow inviting dreams, inviting a new way of thinking,” says Fillion. For Fillion, perfume is an outlet for what he calls “horizontal” thinking—a way to listen to yourself.

    Gloam is the penultimate fragrance in the Othertopias line, and each fragrance takes a different approach to self-observation, making the whole collection a sort of multi-faceted self-portrait, according to Fillion.

    At its core, Gloam feels very Aesop, says Fillion. “It’s for those who want to embrace self-observation and nostalgia, those who want to be enriched through fragrance. I like this connection to introspection and the comfort that it can bring.”

    The scent itself is floral without leaning too powdery, spicy but still rounded, and green but still mellow. You get pink pepper, cardamom, and orange flower at first whiff, and notes like saffron, jasmine sambac, mimosa, iris, patchouli, and copaiba take center stage at the heart and base. It’s one of those fragrances that will smell good on absolutely everyone and work for just about any occasion you can imagine.
