    After Jimmy Kimmel‘s monologue on Monday prompted remarks from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr today, Nexstar said that it will pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its ABC stations “for the foreseeable future” following his remarks about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination. ABC quickly followed suit.

    “Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be preempted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson told Deadline today.

    The monologue in question mocked Donald Trump over POTUS’ take on the NFL and TikTok, before Kimmel offered his blunt assessment of the aftermath of Kirk’s death: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” the host said.

    On Tuesday, authorities charged Tyler Robinson, 22, in Kirk’s killing, along with a series of other charges. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray said that Robinson’s mother said her son “had become more political and had started to lean more to the left, becoming more pro-gay and trans rights oriented.” Gray said that when Robinson’s father asked his son why he did it, Robinson “explained that there was too much evil, and the guy, referring to Charlie Kirk, spreads too much hate.”

    NEW YORK (AP) — ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show indefinitely following comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s killing.

    The network’s decision Wednesday came Nexstar announced its ABC affiliates would pre-empt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely over his comments.

    “Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located,” said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division.

    A spokesperson for Kimmel did not immediately return a call for comment.

    In his monologue on Tuesday, Kimmel said that “we hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

    Kimmel, like CBS late-night host Stephen Colbert, has consistently been critical of President Donald Trump and many of his policies on his ABC show. CBS said this past summer that it was cancelling Colbert’s show at the end of this season for financial reasons, although some critics have wondered if his stance on Trump played a role.

    That leads us to the shrewd bit of cross-pollination happening for ABC and Hulu, owned by the same parent company in Disney. After testing the waters with a Mormon Wives crossover on Hulu’s Vanderpump Villa earlier this year, then casting not one, but two cast members for Dancing With the Stars, the burgeoning reality television universe will triple dip by casting Paul as Bachelorette. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season three returns on November 13 and The Bachelorette is slated for a 2026 debut. This shores up the streaming-first Mormon Wives audience, helping to lure key viewership demographics back to the brand’s broadcast offerings. And that transfer can’t come soon enough: The premiere episode of Bachelor in Paradise season 10 earned roughly 3.2 million fewer viewers than season two of Mormon Wives, both of which aired this year.

    Those in the know have long been calling for the outsourcing of leads. “They should take any single guy from Love Island season seven—he’s the next Bachelor,” Chad Kultgen, cohost of popular Bachelor podcast Game of Roses and coauthor of How to Win the Bachelor, told Vanity Fair earlier this year. “They have done the work for you, made these people superstars in the reality dating TV format. That’s how they should be thinking.”

    The powers that be, including newly instated showrunner Scott Teti, former executive producer of Bravo’s Summer House, appear to have been listening. Before Taylor was announced as the next Bachelorette, fans originally believed the news would reveal the lead of The Bachelor’s landmark 30th season due to scheduling. Previously, The Bachelorette aired in the spring or summer, followed by Paradise, then The Bachelor in January. The franchise last cast a lead from outside of its pool of Instagrammable suitors for season 25 in Matt James, who became the first-ever Black Bachelor. Although, he was best known on social media as a close friend of The Bachelorette runner-up Tyler Cameron.

    Even the manner in which Taylor was announced feels fresh. This is the first time a lead hasn’t been announced on an ABC-affiliated platform like Good Morning America or an After the Final Rose special. Cooper as conduit for such news feels like acknowledgment that a young female audience tunes into her podcast—and that the podcasting realm itself is key to sustaining The Bachelor’s relevance. Further proof: Former Bachelor Nick Viall, host of the popular Viall Files podcast, hosted the season two Mormon Wives reunion. And the last Paradise reunion was not filmed on an ABC soundstage, but recorded for the official Bachelor Happy Hour podcast.

    There will be inevitable growing pains with such a shake-up—the ABC audience has previously been less forgiving of unapologetic women—and Paul has already said that she’ll require any husband of hers to relocate to Utah. (Hope he has his Swig order down!) But this only further stokes the intrigue that comes with casting Paul—who is well-versed in making must-see TV. “The more open you are, the more backlash you can get,” she told VF in May, “but also the more relatable you are.”

    Moments after General Hospital fans saw Maxie Jones try Deception’s new Youth Truth serum, she stumbled on set and collapsed, leaving her family and friends in shock. We still don’t know the cause of the collapse – was it a heart condition or poison? – and as her friends, including Lulu, worry over whether Maxie will slip into a coma, the actress who plays Maxie has spoken out about her future on the ABC series.

    Kirsten Storms has played Maxie for 20 years now, after joining the series in 2005 (she had one hiatus between 2011 and 2012), but is now taking a temporary leave of absence to move to Nashville with her daughter. In a video posted on Instagram in early July, Kristen revealed that ABC has replaced her with another actress for the time being, confirming Maxie is not dying, and shared that she will return later in the year.

    “I’m very excited to be making Tennessee my home! I can’t wait to return to GH, once Harper and I are settled in our new town,” she captioned the post. “I plan on documenting as much of this new journey on my social media as I can. It’s always been a dream of mine to move to a place like this; it’s hard to believe it’s really happening.”

    In the video, Kirsten went on to share that it had been a lifelong dream to move to the south, and she was grateful to the show’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, for helping her to have the best of both worlds.

    “In March, I asked Frank Valentini, our amazing executive producer. I had a conversation with him [about] my reasons for wanting to move and my desire to not leave the show,” she explained, adding: “Now, when you approach a job like this, they can always be like, ‘Forget it. We’ll let you out of the contract if you’re going to leave the state.’ GH did not do that. Which was kind of amazing.”

    Kirsten has already filmed her final scenes and has already made the trip to Tennessee, but she added that it was “possible I will be back in December, maybe November”.

    Maxie is currently in hospital after collapsing

    “I really want to thank GH, the ABC executives, the writers, for agreeing to let me take this time, and I know Frank and the producers there know my reasons, and I am so grateful that they understand and are supportive,” she concluded. Addressing rumors that she was leaving the soap, Kirsten insisted this “is just me, very long-winded explaining that I am taking a break and moving to Tennessee”.

    Longtime news anchor Dave Lucas, whose work has been seen across the District’s ABC affiliate 7News, has announced that he will retire later this month. 

    Lucas is expected to continue his work on 7News’ 24/7 afternoon broadcasts through Friday, Nov. 22, when the station plans to produce a retirement send-off on 7News and 24/7 all day, according to a release from the outlet. 

    “Lucas is something of a D.C. area broadcast institution,” 7News said in a release. “As one of the original news anchors for NewsChannel 8, he has called the station his home since it went on the air 34 years ago. He is among the region’s most highly regarded broadcast journalists.”

    Lucas’ career has spanned reports as a sports and health reporter, live interviews with newsmakers and coverage of some of the biggest stories in recent memory. He has been on the air broadcasting live during the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon, the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, and multiple presidential elections. 

    In his 48 years as a journalist, he has been honored with an induction into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle, three regional Emmy Awards and a national Edward R. Morrow award.

    “Dave and his wife Lisa are looking forward to their next adventure in Richmond, Va., where they’re moving to be closer to their children and a happily increasing number of grandchildren,” the release said.

    RECAP: Chock comes on strong for Joan, Mark finally gets his ‘Golden Bachelorette’ 1-on-1

    NEW YORK — The mansion was quiet at the start of this week’s episode, but not for long. We got a tight shot of Pascal in his tighty whiteys steaming his clothing. The guys were a bit sad that they were down to just 7 of them. The house was feeling empty. Keith is hoping to get a one-on-one date after his disastrous conversation with him during the cocktail party last week. He said he wasn’t himself and he feels that he’ll be able to show off who he really is on a date with just Joan.

    Gina: It’s getting so real for these guys. You know they’re analyzing every single interaction. I do love that they’re all supportive of each other.

    Trista Advises Joan

    Joan met up with the OG Trista. She said her biggest regret was not sharing with Ryan that she had fallen in love with him earlier on. She felt like she left him hanging. Trista and Joan shared a special moment where she told Joan that her husband John would have been proud of her and wanted her to find happiness.

    Gina: First of all, to our LA readers, La La Land has some yummy coffee! Ok, onto the conversation. Trista’s take is so interesting and you can see just how much the show has evolved from the first “Bachelorette.” Her advice was spot-on and I do think that’s what we’ve seen Joan doing throughout, being more open and vulnerable.

    Keith’s One-on-One Date

    The first date card read, “Keith I want a love that gets better with age.” Note, that there are no date roses. Joan wants to make the decision on which hometowns to visit after all of the men have had a chance on a date. Mark was disappointed to miss out on that first date. Keith met Joan at a helicopter where they toured the area. She said that his big personality reminds her of her husband John. She’s hoping to get to know the depth of him as the date goes on. They swooped by the mansion and the guys waved, but boy, were they jealous! Especially Chock who said he hopes they don’t have a connection because he wants to be with Joan.

    Gina: The foreshadowing in this episode was epic. Props to the story producers!

    Keith and Joan landed in the helicopter at a winery where they did a tasting. They spoke with the couple there about how Keith got the first impression rose and now they were trying to get to know each other. The couple at the winery were married for 32 years and Joan was also married to John for 32 years. It struck a chord. “I could’ve been them,” Joan said. That was like a gut punch. Poor Keith is going to have to do his best to pull her back up.

    Gina: You could see the emotional shift happen in Joan. My heart went out to her in that moment.

    Mark Struggles

    At the mansion, Mark was having doubts. He said the loss of his wife still deeply affects him. He said that he feels a connection to Joan but he’s losing hope. Mark said he’s not sure he’s doing the right thing anymore. He cried as he spoke to Pascal and Jordan about his feelings. Get out the tissues. He told a beautiful story about how his wife Denise could put out her hand and hummingbirds would land on her! He said that he saw a hummingbird as he was out walking and it took his breath away. Mark said it’s like Denise is telling him that being there is right. He’s starting to feel better.

    Gina: Aaaand, we’re crying. For Joan, the sign is hawks. For Mark, the sign is hummingbirds. This story and the way Mark talks so lovingly about Denise is why Bachelor Nation fell in love with him in the first place. He’s just a genuine guy. And his pals supporting him? Just love it.

    Keith and Joan Connect

    Back on Keith’s date, he told Joan that he hopes to show her another side of him. Joan said that she already likes the side that she sees. Keith told her about his ex-wife’s addiction and how he and his daughters haven’t spoken to her in over a decade. He said that he just had to separate them from that situation for their own good. Keith said that he has a lot of emotions and even cries at dog movies. Joan said that she appreciates what a strong man and good father he is. He said that if he gets to take Joan to his hometown she would meet his three daughters and they would do a backyard BBQ. They shared a kiss! Joan worried that her kiss tasted like wine and Keith assured her that it was perfect. He seems like such a wonderful guy.

    Gina: Joan rightfully observed that she felt he was holding back and she’s glad that he’s showing more. He does seem like a great guy.

    Group Date

    The men sat around in the living room anxiously awaiting a date card. There was a knock at the door and Jonathan read it. “Guy, Jordan, Jonathan, Pascal, Chock, our love has no time to spare.” Looks like they are bowling, and Mark finally gets his one-on-one date! He is so relieved! Pascal and Jordan jumped up to give him a hug. My goodness, this show is so heartwarming. The guys on the group date worried that their senior aches and pains might make them bad bowlers but they knew it was all in fun!

    Gina: I love that they wanted to do stretches to make sure they didn’t pull a muscle while bowling! Also, I don’t think we realized before this episode just how close Mark and Pascal are!

    On the group date, Joan warmed up as the men arrived. She seems like she’s pretty good at it. She liked this date because it was an activity that her family would go to do. Pascal was not impressed with the bowling shirt and shoes. But he’s a good sport so he wore it and said “Blue looks good on me.” He’s only bowled once in his life! “I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself,” he said. And it turns out, he’s not half bad!

    Gina: It’s not Gucci or Prada, but Pascal did make it work!

    Jordan got a strike, Jonathan got a strike, Chock got a strike, and Guy, was maybe a little shaky. He was put off that Chock was coming on strong and on Joan’s bowling team, and putting his arm around her. Jonathan said it seemed like they were a couple and they were all buddies. Guy asked Chock to let Joan have some time with the other guys, but he pretty much ignored that request.

    Guy slid in when Chock had to get up to take his turn. Pascal decided to play it cool because “It’s in Joan’s hands.” Jonathan said that his mother was on a game show called “Bowling for Dollars” and he took out an envelope full of photos and letters from his family to show Joan. He had a picture of his mom, childhood pictures of himself, and pictures of his children when they were little. Seeing the pictures of his children brought tears to his eyes. Joan told him that he’s a pretty incredible human being. They shared a kiss, too!

    Guy feels very strongly about Joan and is dying to bring her home. He told her that she is the variable in this experience and in his life that is making him happy. “I have not been this happy in years,” Guy said. Pascal said that he would also love for Joan to meet his children so they can give him the thumbs up. Jordan also wants Joan to meet his kids and he tells her that if they do, they will love her. The other guys talked about how Chock was glued to Joan, and they worried that Guy might brawl with Chock.

    Gina: This is the one time this entire season that I thought there was going to be some high drama in the house!! But they kinda handled it. Look, I think we all see the connection with Joan and Chock but for the guys, they feel they’re still in the game here too. So I get why they’d be upset. But also, if you want that time with her, make that time with her! Chock is taking every advantage that he can. You can’t fault him for that, really.

    Chock and Joan took some time to talk privately and they shared the experience of how living alone is not what they want anymore. She said that she worried that starting a new life would be selfish but now she wants that. Chock said that he sees a beautiful future with her and Joan said that she feels the same way! They did a lot of passionate kissing! That said, Joan said that she is falling for several men and she wishes she could go to all of their hometowns. Pascal noted that he saw tears in Joan’s eyes and that it was going to be a tough decision for her.

    Mark’s One-on-One Date

    It was finally time for Mark’s long-awaited one-on-one date. Mark had the sweetest smile as he waited for Joan to arrive and pick him up in a red convertible. He said that he had put off dating for years after his wife’s death because he just wasn’t ready, but he feels he is now. Pascal and the other guys gave him a pep talk and told him he was ready for this! “Keep smiling Mark, you have a beautiful smile,” Pascal said to Mark. Aw! Guess who sidled up to Joan as she sat next to Mark…Chock! Did you notice that?

    Gina: Yep, noticed! But here’s the thing, Chock makes the most of every single opportunity he has in front of Joan, even if it’s only for a moment like this one.

    Joan said that Mark is very shy and she worries that he might not open up or make a connection in time. Mark and Joan arrived at a yacht and he was blown away! It was beautiful! They sailed off, enjoyed each other’s company, and drank some champagne. Then it seemed, silent… Mark! What are you doing buddy? Speak up, this is your moment! Joan said that she’s having fun, but they haven’t hit an easy flow yet.

    Gina: This was so uncomfortable for many reasons. First, we’ve all been waiting for them to finally get this one-on-one time and perhaps too much has been made of it because of his franchise connection and the fact that she was so happy to see him come out of that limo with Kelsey on the first night. Bachelor Nation definitely has been rooting for them, so it’s a lot of pressure. Second, he has said he hadn’t really dated since Denise passed, so this had to be a completely strange situation for him. Third, when he had those little moments on group dates or cocktail parties, you know it’s a finite amount of time and it’s not this long, extended day. Perhaps he is more comfortable in that situation at this point in his life? No matter what, I felt so bad. Like, just say anything!

    The captain arrived and gave them a letter from Jesse! He gave them a letter to do a scavenger hunt so that they could learn about each other. Aw! Jesse is awesome – this is the icebreaker they needed! They played never have I ever, it was very PG and they did learn a lot about each other. Joan said to Mark that she really wants to be part of a couple again because it’s more fun with someone and she sees herself in that situation in five years. Mark said that he feels his life will flourish due to this show and it’s given him the confidence to continue. Joan and Mark talked about the sense of loss they both felt for their spouses. He said that she could always talk to him about that. Joan said it felt good to talk to someone who got it.

    Gina: I wondered if the producers had that scavenger hunt kind of at the ready in case things weren’t going well? They know Mark, so they know he is on the quieter side and might need a little push to get things going.

    Mark described how his wife had the longest hair and that losing it from cancer was hard. He said they really made the most of their time together, but then time ran out. Joan said I don’t think that you’ll ever fully heal. Then they shared the signs of their spouses. For Mark, it’s hummingbirds and he shared the story of the one he saw at the mansion. Joan said that she finds comfort in the signs. She teared up and Mark said that he understood and Joan said that she hopes John never goes away. Mark reassured her that he wouldn’t. “To the best day I’ve had since arriving in California,” Mark said as he toasted Joan. He really wants to show Joan off to his kids and show that he’s happy. Joan said that she loved learning more about Mark. “I feel like we have a much deeper connection,” Joan said. But, “There still seems to be something missing.” No!!!!

    Gina: Whew, what a rollercoaster! First, we get the emotional conversation about their losses and the bond they have over their grief journeys. Then, we get Mark talking about how it’s his best day in California. AND THEN, we get an unsure Joan. I was not quite ready for what was about to happen.

    Joan Breaks Up With Mark

    The guys felt like Mark would be getting a hometown. Yet, Joan showed up and asked to talk to Mark. The other men thought her pulling him aside was good, but alas, it was not. Joan told Mark that she felt something was missing. She couldn’t sleep the whole night and said that she didn’t see herself in their conversation and she felt she came into it a bit too early for him. She asked him if he was ok, and he said he was. He said he understood that it was her journey and Joan said that she really loves him. “This experience here has really changed me,” Mark said. “I’m leaving here I know that I’m a better human being, a better man, a better father.” Joan cried about what a great person he was and said he “doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.” They shared a very heartfelt hug and Joan told him that he’s made a big difference to her heart. She just knew that he wasn’t the one and that they weren’t in the same place yet.

    Gina: And this is why we take off all our makeup when we watch this show because we cry it all off! Another teary moment, but just the most lovely conversation. Joan felt bad. She WANTED it to work, she really did. But when you know, you know and she knew. I think this experience is probably going to be more beneficial to his journey than anything else. It was so nice getting to “know” Mark on this season.

    Then Mark had to walk in and tell the guys that Joan cut him loose. The guys felt so bad for him! They all genuinely care about each other and I just love that. Mark told them that he knew that no matter who she chose that Joan would be getting a great guy. They all shared their love and Pascal cried. They made a real connection and Pascal said Mark was his best friend!

    Gina: Why does Pascal have to make me cry even more?!

    Mark packed up his suitcase and talked about how it was an incredible experience but that he just wasn’t what she was looking for. Mark said that everything he looks for in a person he felt like was in Joan. He hoped that he would find his great love one day but that Joan would forever have a little corner of his heart.

    That meant that Keith and Jonathan were eliminated. Jonathan’s eyes looked shocked, and Keith looked disappointed. Joan walked Jonathan out and told him that he made such an imprint on her heart. Jonathan said that he validated a lot of his values and he felt seen. “You are worthy, don’t forget it,” Joan told him.

    This is the first time I think the two one-on-one dates didn’t get hometowns! Joan apparently just needed confirmation that she knew these were her final four men.

    Next Week

    It’s time to meet the men’s children and travel to their hometowns! Joan meets their kids, grandkids, and other family members and it looks like the men are getting anxious for answers!

    Gina: The grandchild asking “have you kissed my grandpa” had me laughing. We love a good hometown episode. Can’t wait to see Joan and her man take this next step!

    Abbott Elementary Season-Premiere Recap: The Cat’s Out the Bag!

    Summer is firmly over, and few things ring in the transition into autumn like new episodes of Abbott Elementary. Coming off a strike-impacted third season that coincided with more buzz than ever surrounding the show, Abbott gifts us a solid premiere episode, signifying how ready the cast and crew are for the new season. The show is no longer television’s Rookie of the Year; Abbott is now established in the industry, and with a whopping 22-episode season, the writers and actors have room to breathe and really flesh out story lines in true sitcom fashion. We’re even getting a crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so it’s safe to say real television is back, baby.

    Not much has changed in the halls of Abbott Elementary: Jacob still hates Mr. Morton, Ava avoids work at all costs (she declares that action is her least favorite thing to take), the teachers remind the kids how much better they are than New Jersey, and Janine shares stolen glances with Gregory over their students’ heads. However, these stolen glances are no longer of the will-they, won’t-they variety. Following last season’s finale, which culminated in a Janine-and-Gregory kiss, the pair have moved forward with their connection and are testing the waters romantically. Here is an example of the delicate yet exciting place Abbott finds itself in four seasons in; the choices made now will determine if it makes it through the gauntlet to legacy-sitcom status. I’m particularly interested in how Janine and Gregory move forward since fan reception to romantic relationships can be particularly precarious depending on which way the wind blows. Some fans were already sick of the will-they, won’t-they tension after a mere two seasons, while others, like myself, reveled in the tension. Now, we get to find out if this relationship is in it for the long haul, like The Office’s Jim and Pam, or merely a blip, like Parks and Recreation’s Ann and Andy. Or could this be a classic breakup-to-make-up situation, like New Girl’s Jess and Nick? There are many possible avenues, and watching it unfold in real time is what makes television so entertaining.

    For now, we have no idea what Janine and Gregory’s future holds, which is perfectly fine because we get to have fun living in the moment of the early days of their romance. We get cute moments that play on their idiosyncracies, like Janine telling Gregory she would never take him somewhere without buttered noodles and Gregory uncharacteristically wearing Janine’s lipstick kiss on his cheek. They’re adorable as they try to play coy at work despite everyone already knowing the advancement in their relationship, with Ava considering the sneaking around an affront to their intelligence. Their co-workers have no problem humoring them, but once the students start to pick up on the vibes, Ava puts pressure on them to go public so she won’t get in trouble by bringing an HR representative (Warren, one of Janine’s opps from the district) to the school in hopes of forcing their hand. True to their personalities, Janine advocates for keeping things under wraps, while Gregory wants to come clean, noting there’s nothing professionally wrong with what they’re doing as long as they’re honest about it.

    After Janine awkwardly avoids a conversation with Warren, Gregory begins to worry that she has cold feet regarding her feelings. Jacob assures him that Janine is deeply in “like” with him, so he shouldn’t have anything to worry about. So when Janine realizes she forgot her presentation for the back-to-school staff meeting (which is very important as she’s pitching a field trip to the aquarium, and “if the kids don’t go to the aquarium, they fail the SATs”), Gregory plays the perfect boyfriend and runs to her apartment to retrieve it during his free period. He barely makes it back in time before bursting into the meeting right as Janine runs out of stalling time and handing her back her keys. The staff starts grilling them with questions about their evident closeness, including coming to and from work together with their overnight duffel bags in tow, until they break under pressure — the pressure being Mr. Morton’s accusation that the duffel bags were being used to sell drugs. Janine blurts out that they’re having sex, officially letting the cat out of the bag.

    Janine immediately tries to stuff the cat back in the bag, causing Gregory to initiate an honest conversation about why she wants to keep things private. She admits that she’s fearful because it wasn’t successful the last time she made something official (I can’t wait for Tariq’s first cameo of the season), and she really wants things to work out this time. Gregory pulls Janine into his arms, soothing her anxiety by reminding her that this time is different. They decide to come clean with HR, this time leaving out the sex portion, thankfully. Gregory and Janine finally sit down with Warren and Ava to spill the details of their coupling. Janine treats it like a therapy session, omitting anything about sex but oversharing to the point where she tries to bring the conversation to when she hit puberty in 11th grade, prompting a fantastic Tyler James Williams deadpan. Warren stops her there, saying all he needs to know is their current relationship status. For the first time, Janine and Gregory publicly declare that they are boyfriend and girlfriend. With everything on the table, Warren makes a record of the relationship, giving a backhanded blessing (I love this rivalry) and allowing them to move forward with the romance.

    While Janine and Gregory formalize their relationship, the staff deals with the repercussions of a PGA golf course currently under construction a few blocks from Abbott, the first sign of which being a new white student that Ava mistakes for a Victorian-era ghost at the West Philly school. Apart from the influx of white people in the neighborhood eager to live near the course, the siphoning of resources that are necessary to build such a project immediately affects the school. A water pipe bursts, traffic is unbearable, the power is faulty, and the gas shuts off as construction ensues. Ava deflects complaints, claiming there’s nothing she can do since it’s a city-backed project.

    When a student’s tooth falls out while they’re trying to chew a frozen chicken nugget since the cafeteria couldn’t heat them without gas, Melissa puts her connections to use to try and improve conditions. Her construction-worker cousin, Tommy, tells her that the golf course is cutting corners by using nonunion workers. She proposes to tattle to the city or have her cousin kill all their pets. Obviously, they choose the former. With word of Abbott’s discontent rumbling, an attorney representing the golf course makes an appearance at the school. He apologizes with the timbre of a politician, persuading them of the value the golf course will add before giving out gift cards, ergonomic chairs, and new computers. Then he promises that the workers will be unionized by the following week. I know when something feels too good to be true, and it seems as though Abbott has introduced a new villain.

    • I love this “Jacob can’t read” conspiracy theory. I hope it becomes a running gag along with his hatred for Morton. Speaking of: Watching him take the beef to HR was hilarious, but Mr. Johnson accusing Melissa of flirting via lunch takeout menus takes the cake.

    • I’m very biased, as I live next to one, but I’m happy Abbott Elementary is shedding light on how golf courses use an inordinate amount of resources.

    • Finally, here are my favorite lines of the episode:

    Ava on Janine and Gregory: “We know what two people look like when they’re hunching hard.” I never thought I would hear hunching on network TV, so thank you, Janelle James, for that amazing delivery.

    Mr. Johnson after Janine admits that she’s having sex with Gregory — not that she’s a drug dealer: “This is even worse than I thought. What people won’t do for money.”

    Barbara, squaring up to the golf-course lawyer: “Your little construction project has put quite a strain on our lives. We got a white child now. You wanna get his parents involved?”

    Ava when Warren says she can’t sell jewelry the students make on Etsy because of child-labor laws: “Is it really work if they love what they do?”

    While one door has been closed with the 9-1-1: Lone Star cancellation, another one will be axed down soon enough. Franchise co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that a new 9-1-1 spin-off is in the works.

    Created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the procedural drama first premiered on Fox in 2018 before it moved to ABC during its seventh season. It then spawned a spin-off in 2020 — titled Lone Star — and ran for four seasons, with Season 5 having recently arrived. 

    Unfortunately, the fifth season of Lone Star will be its final season.

    What did Ryan Murphy say about the planned 9-1-1 expansion?

    “Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall,” Murphy told Variety. 

    On the Lone Star cancellation, Murphy said: “Sadly, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And ‘9-1-1’ moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

    Other details about the new spin-off have yet to be announced.

    9-1-1 chronicles the lives of LA’s first responders, including dispatchers, police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. The franchise features the likes of Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Rob Lowe, Brian Michael Smith, and more. 

    The eighth season of 9-1-1 airs on Thursdays on ABC. Lone Star, on the other hand, airs on Mondays on Fox.

    DirecTV customers lose access to Disney, ESPN channels amid contract dispute

    DirecTV and the Walt Disney company have reached an agreement in principle, returning Disney’s channels to DirecTV consumers. 

    The parties are still working to finalize a new, multi-year contract, according to a joint news release on Saturday from the two companies. The channels, including ESPN, Disney, ABC stations and streaming services including Hulu, been immediately restored. 

    The channels have been dark for millions of DirecTV customers since Sept. 1. DirecTV has 11.3 million customers, CBS News previously reported. 

    The dispute focused on the carriage fees that DirecTV pays to Disney. DirecTV accused Disney of “taking an anti-consumer approach” by demanding a new deal include bundled services. DirecTV said that it wants to allow customers to choose from smaller bundles of networks when subscribing, so they can lower their costs. 

    As part of the core agreement agreed to by both parties, Disney’s streaming services Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will be included in select DirecTV packages. DirecTV will continue to carry Disney’s entertainment, sports and news programs. 

    “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DIRECTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options,” the companies said in a joint statement. “DIRECTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DIRECTV’s customers. We’d like to thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to restore Disney’s entire portfolio of networks in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend.”

    Hurley and the Hot Pocket Outlived Lost’s Wildest Lore

    It was always refreshing to get a lighthearted break from the insanity and lore on Lost. That was particularly true by season five, when you also had to keep track of who was where, when, how, and why — not to mention who was who (any character could be possessed, dead, or a hallucination). In episode two of its fifth year, Lost gave us less than 15 seconds of comedy gold in the form of Hurley throwing a microwave-fresh Hot Pocket at Ben Linus and missing wide right.

    Real-time screenshotting and GIF-ing TV scenes on Twitter hadn’t yet become the norm, so the moment wasn’t memed into virality back when it aired in 2009. But the assorted fandom sites dedicated solely to Lost ate it up, with one Television Without Pity commenter summing up the general feeling: “All the crazy things in this show, I focus on the hot pocket, lol.”

    The show’s marketers knew there was something special about this seemingly random scene — the season-five DVD menu background on disc one plays a shot of Hurley putting the Hot Pocket in the microwave. If you idle there long enough, he comes back to get his snack.

    But while that savory, sauce-filled pastry splattering against a kitchen wall holds a special place in the hearts of many fans, the cast and crew had no idea the random gag would have such staying power. When Vulture tracked down several of the people responsible for Hurley’s inept Hot Pocket defense — co-writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, director Jack Bender, editor Mark Goldman, sound designer Paula Fairfield, and Hugo “Hurley” Reyes himself, Jorge Garcia — they had, at best, fuzzy-yet-fond memories of its creation and filming.

    “I said, ‘I think they’ve got the wrong writers. We never had Hurley throw a Hot Pocket,’” Kitsis recalls. “And Adam goes, ‘We did, and that was your idea.’”

    First, though, let’s back up for a refresher on what’s happening in this episode, “The Lie,” which was the second half of the season’s two-hour premiere. At this point in the series, the castaways on the island are stuck jumping through time against their will for reasons too complicated to recap here. (We’re deep in mythology,” as Garcia puts it.) Off the island, in 2007, the Oceanic Six — Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, and Claire’s baby, Aaron, who returned to the mainland at the end of the prior season — are explaining away their miraculous survival with a bullshit story that prevents villain Charles Widmore and his henchmen from learning the island’s real location. That’s just the setup for this episode, which centers on Hurley and his struggles to maintain the titular fib.

    Hurley is hiding out in his mansion when he’s approached by Michael Emerson’s Ben Linus — who, the audience knows, is actually on the Oceanic Six’s side, working with Jack to get them back to the island because the mystical powers that be demand it. Ben sneaks around back into the kitchen, startling our hero into throwing his hotly anticipated snack at the intruder. Like many things Lost, the Hot Pocket had a deeper meaning beyond the bit.

    In an earlier version of Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz’s script, the snack symbolized the bond between Hurley and his mother. “We wanted something that would evoke Hurley growing up with his mom, like he would come home after school and she would make him a Hot Pocket,” Kitsis says. “Each character dictated the tone of their own episode, and Hurley episodes were best when they had a great dose of humor plus heavy emotion. Adam and I, at that time, really found it funny, the name ‘Hot Pocket’ — it was an inside joke and it worked perfectly with the emotion.”

    The Hot Pocket’s connection to Hurley’s mom got cut in rewrites but the duo were able to deploy the snack when they needed an amusing way for Hurley to react to Ben’s intrusion. “He’s not a character who’s ever going to hurt someone. Even if he hit Ben it still wouldn’t have hurt him,” says Horowitz. “It was always about finding that line — funny enough without crossing into the too-absurd.”

    Why choose a Hot Pocket over, say, a generic frozen burrito? “They’re just inherently funny,” he says. “They’re sleepover foods when you’re a kid. They’re stoner foods when you’re in college, or now. Hot Pockets are like a Swiss Army Knife of snacks.”

    On Zoom, director Jack Bender rewatches the scene on YouTube to refresh his memory. “There’s the Hot Pocket! I totally remember it!” he exclaims. “What’s great is the juxtaposition of using a Hot Pocket as a weapon — it’s very Lost-ian. As much as we dug deep emotionally, suspensefully, and philosophically, there was also that left-of-center humor. And using a Hot Pocket as a weapon is something Hurley definitely would have done.”

    Bender immediately recalls wanting to open the scene — which follows Jack reviving Sayid from being shot with a dart full of sedatives — with a transition to a POV shot from the microwave’s interior. “Look, it’s not reinventing cinema. Over the years, I and other directors have shot inside the refrigerator. I wanted to be inside on a wider angle, see that stupid Hot Pocket going around, see Hurley’s face come in because I knew that would be a great way to start it.”

    To accomplish this, the props team removed the back of a working microwave and its heating element, allowing the camera to shoot through while the carousel and other electronics functioned normally. “It lights like it would, which makes it even goofier,” Bender says. “We made sure it wasn’t going to be a steaming-hot Hot Pocket.”

    Bender and Garcia remember filming that day had an upbeat, lighthearted atmosphere — and not only because Garcia got to wear his “regular clothes instead of island clothes.” Given a fake pastry made by prop master Rob Kyker, they did take after take, with resets to wipe down sauce from the wall or wherever the Pocket landed when Garcia missed.

    “It was so silly, throwing that rubber Hot Pocket. I had to do it a lot,” says Garcia. “Fake food is always entertaining to look at and play with. I didn’t really have Hot Pocket experience, but it had a decent enough heft. It had a little bounce to it, so sometimes where it would go after it hit the wall was pretty funny. Trying to get the precision on that, when you hit it, you’re really proud of the smear — ‘Oh, that’s the one!’ That was fun.”

    There was one drawback to using a Hot Pocket as Hurley’s weapon of choice: Without a product-placement deal set up, the Lost team wasn’t allowed to mention its brand name. “There was a great line — as it slides down the wall, Ben turns to Hurley and goes, ‘Well, that’s just a waste of a Hot Pocket.’ Michael took this line and hit it like a home run,” Kitsis says. “We had to cut it in editing because it’s like a free commercial.”

    After the splat, Emerson’s unnerving, unflappable gaze switches the atmosphere from comic relief to white-knuckle suspense. But it’s not just the acting — a lot of credit for keeping viewers uneasy goes to the pacing and shot selections by editor Mark Goldman.

    “It’s Hurley’s scene, so by keeping the cutting simple and using the camera angles that move with him, you’re thinking it’s a domestic scene. Ben entering throws it off,” he says. “If we played it as strictly a scare moment and had the music go ‘dun dun dun,’ some of the humor of the Hot Pocket would have gotten stepped on. I’m a firm believer that a show is more engaging when the tone shifts, and Michael is so compelling that cutting to a medium-close shot of him shifts the tone right away. He’s Mr. Cool, the calmest person around, whereas Hurley is throwing Hot Pockets.”

    The microwave-to-countertop segment plays out realistically, calming the viewer with its sense of familiarity. On Lost, the scripts, performances, editing, visuals, and audio were all executed with the idea that the show had to feel real so audiences would put themselves in the castaways’ shoes, or lack thereof.

    “We tried to make the show about real people living through confusion, fear, and, Where the fuck are we? How did we get here? Monsters are chasing us!” says Bender. “What I always pushed for — and the actors’ instincts were the same — was ‘Let’s make this real so that no matter how preposterous it goes, people relate and care.’”

    In this instance, you’re meant to wonder how you’d react if you were in Hurley’s position — and you wouldn’t be doing that if the little details didn’t add up. For Paula Fairfield, the episode’s sound designer, that meant making sure elements like the Pocket cooking were realistic to the ears. After all, if it sounded like the pastry was being grilled over coals, the viewer might get stuck on that incongruity and miss the action.

    “Sizzle, ding, open the door, close the door, and then bam — it’s got to be very naturalistic, kind of understated but very specific,” she says. “I think I recorded the ding but the other stuff I had in my sound library. The sizzle was a tamped-down bacon sizzle. The Hot Pocket hitting the wall has a little bit of a slap, slightly wet, a little crunch, and a little weight to it. It can’t sound too hard. You don’t want to push something too much because it’ll pull the viewer out.”

    Clearly, the moment landed as intended, then and now — it still pops up in tweets and gets thoroughly discussed on Reddit threads. “We never thought that in a show that won an Emmy for very great drama, the Hot Pocket would rise to meet Locke in a wheelchair, no,” Kitsis says, laughing.

    “We knew the weight of ‘not Penny’s boat’ and ‘The Constant,’” adds Garcia. “The show is surrounded with so much intensity, the moments of levity become very appreciated by the audience. It’s like when Hurley makes a golf course. People responded to it and talked about it as the ‘Hurley makes the golf course’ episode. But I’m like, ‘No, that’s the Sayid gets captured and held hostage episode! I’m the B story!’”

    NEW YORK — We’re back in Hawaii for the dramatic conclusion to Jenn’s journey, and was it ever. We picked up with Jenn meeting up with her family. She was hoping they could help provide some clarity on which of the remaining men, Marcus or Devin, was right for her.

    Jenn’s brother, friend Nicole, aunt, and mother were in Hawaii to meet her final two suitors. She admitted to her family that she said I love you to both, but only Devin has said it back so far. Jenn said at this point, her feelings towards the men are pretty equal.

    Jenn’s Family Meets Devin

    Devin brought gifts for everyone, he looked like Santa Claus with all of the bags he had. Devin told them that Jenn lights up whenever she talks about them. He added that he grew up with a strong, single mother as well. Jenn said to them that that’s how they really started to connect.

    Devin told Jenn’s mom and aunt that he never dated an Asian girl but he loves it, loves Jenn, and that it’s not about ethnicity for him. He was quick to tell them that he loves Jenn and that he has zero doubts about her. Jenn’s mother thanked Devin for loving Jenn. It was so sweet! He really drove the point home that he wants to be her rock and would find that responsibility to be “a blessing.” He said that it would kill him to not be the one. He asked for their blessing, and they said that they would need more time because in their culture they take that time.

    Jenn’s mom really pressed her on why she loves Devin. Jenn said that Devin unwaveringly loves her and wants to know all of her parts. Her mother was concerned that Devin didn’t know much about Vietnamese culture. Jenn said that Devin wants their future kids to know their culture and learn to speak Vietnamese. Her mother then told her that she needed more time to get to know Devin. Jenn tried to say that she shouldn’t worry because she would never marry someone she didn’t want to marry.

    Dylan Jeremy and Jonathon were in the audience – and they told Jesse Palmer that they were there to give support to Jenn. What could be happening?

    Jenn’s Brother and Devin

    Jenn and her brother talked about her and Devin’s similar past with a single mom and strained relationship with their dads. Her brother said that he would support whatever she wanted to do. James said he could see how happy Jenn was with Devin. But – he wanted to grill him!

    Devin told James that he was confident in their relationship. He said he never has to change anything about himself with Jenn and he’s never had that before. Devin admitted that he’s worried about the other guy that’s still involved. Devin also asked for her brother’s blessing and got shot down again. “I’m definitely not going to give my blessing now,” he said. James added he wanted to speak to the second guy first. He said it wasn’t because he didn’t like Devin, but he wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing for his sister.

    Jenn told Devin to hold on and that she’d “never felt like this before and I love you.” Except with Marcus maybe, who she said it to first. “Don’t get in your head, okay?” Jenn said to Devin as he got in the SUV and drove away.

    Marcus Meets Jenn’s Family

    Here we go! Marcus’ turn! I’m so nervous for him. James is worried that Jenn is falling yet again for another emotionally unavailable man. Marcus brought just one gift bag. He admitted that he was a bit nervous. Marcus shared how he and his siblings were put in foster care. He had two older sisters who were adopted out, and then he and his sister Gabby got adopted out eventually to another. Wow, to be split up like that is so sad. Marcus also shared his experience of nearly losing his life while serving his country.

    James Speaks with Marcus

    James shared his appreciation with Marcus for sharing so much with his family about his past and how he knew that it wasn’t easy for him. Marcus said he wouldn’t do it unless he really cared for Jenn. He also admitted that he underestimated how important emotions are, especially because he had to block them while serving. Marcus said that Jenn makes him believe that taking the next step is possible. James thought that Marcus played “Ring Around the Rosy” with his questions.

    James Speaks with Jenn’s Mom and Aunt

    Marcus said that he believes that he can fall in love with Jenn, but he’s not there yet. He said he’s missing the feeling of “certainty.” He started to cry as he spoke about it. He really wants to be that guy for her, but it seems like he’s under too much pressure. This seems to be way too fast for him. “The feelings I have for your daughter are real,” Marcus said. Jenn’s mom is worried that Marcus could hurt her in the long run.

    Jenn told her brother that she feels Marcus is close to being in love with her, but he’s not there yet. She blames his past trauma. James told her that Marcus fits the mold of men from her past who are emotionally unavailable. “Marcus is a really good man who has good intentions, but it is a little concerning,” Jenn said. She hopes she knows where his heart is at. “How long are you willing to wait?” James asked Jenn. “I’m not sure,” she said. James cried as he told his sister how he just wanted the best for her.

    Jenn Confronts Marcus About His Feelings

    Jenn said her family said some things that were really hard to hear. She asked him, “How do you see this ending for us?” Marcus said that he thought they made progress that day. “Where are you at with your feelings?” Jenn pressed. “Are you not certain about me?” Marcus said he doesn’t think it’s her, he thinks it’s the pressure to build the family that he never had. He hoped that him saying he’s getting there and his feelings are still growing could be “enough.” Jenn realizes she shouldn’t still feel confused.

    James was emotional again. Jesse asked him how he was feeling. “As you can tell, I’m not too happy.” Yikes!

    Jenn’s Last Date with Devin

    Jenn met up with Devin on the beach where they walked over to two spiritual guides. They did a spiritual ceremony that is supposed to happen before any life event. Jenn said she wanted to put any concerns in the past and this was a chance for them to have a fresh future. They got lava rocks that represented their fears and shared how they felt with each other. Jenn wants someone who won’t leave when things get tough. They threw their rocks into the water to release their fears. Devin and Jenn dipped their bodies into the ocean as a spiritual rebirth of sorts. They shared a bunch of kisses on the beach as Devin remained worried that he wouldn’t be the guy in the end.

    In the evening, they met up with a passionate kiss. Devin said that he wants Jenn to “feel the weight of his soul.” That’s intense. Devin and Jenn talked about throwing the stones in the ocean and how it made them not afraid to take the next step together. Devin said that he trusts her opinions and decisions. That was something that really made Jenn feel seen. Santa Claus pulled out another gift and it was from the shaman on their New Zealand date. He told him not to give it out until he knew whom he wanted to give it to for the rest of his life. Jenn loved the level of commitment that it showed. “Devin keeps blowing me away!” Jenn said. “You can continue to be loved like that, but you just have to love me back,” Devin said. “I do love you,” Jenn said. She said she now knows what unconditional love is.

    Jenn Has Doubts

    Jenn woke up frustrated and confused after her amazing date with Devin. She doesn’t understand how Marcus can’t feel as strongly about her as she does with him. “His uncertainty is making me uncertain,” Jenn admitted.

    Jesse Talks with Marcus

    Jesse wanted to see how everything was going and if he had made progress with falling in love. Marcus said to Jesse that he told Jenn’s family the truth, he has struggled with his feelings. Marcus said that every time he spends time with Jenn their connection grows. Jesse’s like, so do you love her or are you just afraid to tell her? Marcus said he’s just not certain. Even Jesse seems confused. “If you do in fact love this woman, you have to tell her. Or, I’m afraid you are going to lose her if you don’t,” Jesse said.

    Jenn Talks to Marcus

    She doesn’t want to go on the date until she talks to Marcus. Jenn had to wait an uncomfortably long time for Marcus to answer his hotel room door when she knocked. She asks him to talk, and that never seems like a good thing and he knows that. She wants to know if he would propose, does he just want to date her, does he even see her in his future? Marcus said he regretted not diving deeper into that topic. “I feel like I tried and you just didn’t want to,” Jenn said. “I don’t think that you were excited for the future.” Marcus said it’s not that he can’t picture it, it’s scary for him. “I’m struggling, for sure,” he said. Marcus said that he wants to keep trying and she makes him want to keep trying. He doesn’t understand why it’s hard for him. Tears rolled down his face as Jenn described how much time and feelings she invested into him when he couldn’t give it back.

    “At the end of the day, I know that I love you, I want to be the kind of person that fights for it. Like I want to do this with you. I want to give it a try. I don’t want to give up on us,” Marcus said. That’s how he finally says he loves her. Does he? She’s very conflicted and confused. She has a pit in her stomach instead of feeling elated. Probably not a good sign. Jenn leaves the room, comes back eventually and Marcus admits that he’s afraid of losing her. “I did fall in love with you. It’s clear to me that you know what you want, and I think that’s why I’ve been asking myself some pretty hard questions,” he said. “I’m not giving you what you need.” “I opened my heart to you every second that I got,” Jenn said. She is sick of proving herself, she’s done waiting. “I’m just done,” Jenn said. Marcus then said that he is worried that he wouldn’t find someone like Jenn again. Jenn thanked him for being honest, but she knew that she didn’t want to feel like this anymore. Bye, Marcus!

    Marcus in the Hot Seat

    Marcus said it was tough to watch his breakup with Jenn back. He said after getting home he didn’t know if he had made the right decision or not. Was it his decision? I think that was all Jenn really… anyway, he said that he hates that he let her down. He didn’t want to be part of the problem of why she had ever felt unworthy of love. “The difficult truth is that I needed to get out of her way.”

    Jenn and Marcus Talk Live

    Jenn said that their relationship meant a lot to her and that she was glad that he went on this journey with her. He said he felt the same. Jenn said that she wanted to run toward her feelings with Devin and not run from them. She felt like they weren’t aligned with certain things after the fantasy suites. Jenn said that even if Marcus had said I love you sooner, it wouldn’t have worked out because it just wasn’t the right relationship. “My heart was in a different place and wanted something different,” Jenn said.

    Decision Day

    Jenn was fresh off her breakup with Marcus and although she loves Devin she said she was a bit confused about what she wanted to do. Devin was not confused at all. He met up with Neil Lane to pick out a beautiful engagement ring.

    Jenn said that in order to fulfill herself she wants to choose herself. She’s not going to let Devin propose to her, she wants to propose to him! Wow! This is a Bachelor Nation first.

    Jesse Interrupts the Proposal

    Jesse says that we need to hear what happened since Hawaii from Jenn herself before they air the proposal. This is unprecedented!

    Jenn in the Hot Seat

    Jenn comes out and wipes away tears. She then started to sob. This is awful. They left Hawaii engaged, and she said she was very happy, but then he started to pull away from her. His promises of where they would live and be together just drifted away. Jenn said she felt like she was secondary to everything in his life and he didn’t even bring her around his family anymore.

    They had a happy couple visit planned and instead of going he called her and broke off the engagement. He said he didn’t love her anymore, he felt like something was off and he regretted getting engaged. For the past month, she’s been trying to understand how he could switch his feelings up the way he did. She even told Devin that they could just date, but he said it wasn’t what he wanted anymore. Devin refused couple’s counseling.

    How could he do this to her? I’m really disgusted at this situation. At the same time, he shouldn’t be in a relationship that he doesn’t want to be in, Jenn deserves better than that. Jesse then asked her if she was ready to see him. What? This guy is here? How? Dylan, Jeremy, and Jonathon have the look in their eyes of wanting to tear him apart.

    Devin Talks to Jenn Live

    Devin got a few claps and even a boo as he walked out. Jenn didn’t know where to start and said it wasn’t what she wanted and it wouldn’t be meaningful to her. She wanted to do it off-camera. Jenn asked why he ended their engagement on the phone and then started following Maria on Instagram. She asked if their relationship meant anything to him. He made a face and then said that he couldn’t excuse the Instagram follow, and that he failed her. “Everything I felt for you was real,” he said. He said he needed time and space to process his emotions, but then went clubbing with Jeremy. He said he was there for a work trip, but then went out with Jeremy. “Am I not allowed to live a life?” he said.

    Jesse reigned it in, and asked what happened? When he left the show he had a lot of doubts and he admitted that he suppressed his feelings. Jenn asked why he allowed her to keep falling for him for 2 months after the show. Devin said he couldn’t really explain further. “I was regretfully late on letting you know,” Devin said. Jenn couldn’t believe he was posting memes about Sam. She said that every Monday night she was heartbroken watching the lies that he told her.

    After a commercial break, Devin said he just wanted to focus on the breakup and not after the break. Devin said he had nothing to gain other than to make sure that she was ok. Devin said that he watches Jenn grow and flourish and he said that he fell short of her expectations in the real world. This isn’t him trying to make her feel bad, Devin said he does care, but he was contributing to her regression. She shouldn’t have to compromise what she wants for him, Devin added. Jenn could hardly look at him.

    Watching the Proposal

    Jesse said, “I know that your love story didn’t unfold the way that you thought or expected it would, I’m truly sorry.” He added, “You also showed us what a strong and powerful woman is.” Who loves Jesse? Everyone! But then, Jesse was like can we watch the proposal together? “Do I have a choice?” Jenn said. This broke my heart. I don’t even want to watch this proposal. The little box in the corner of Jenn sitting next to the man who broke her heart, sobbing, is unnecessary. This footage should be burned. It would have been beautiful if it was true. Jenn had this moment stolen from her. She deserves the best. I wish this could have worked out for her so badly.

    Jesse said that he hoped in watching it she could feel empowered because she really did things her own way. I think it would have been more empowering if they had honored her wishes to not have to see it. Jenn said that the man on the screen doesn’t exist anymore, but she’s still the same woman that she is. Right on! Jenn said that she’s ready to fight for love and to find the man who can keep the promises he makes to her. Devin said that he fully believed those things. Then he said some things about falling short of expectations and I really don’t understand this breakup. The bottom line, he basically fell out of love with her in the real world. She told Devin that she hopes that he can find himself in his self-journey one day.

    Jesse tried to reassure her that her great love is still out there. I would say so! Then to try to uplift us, they teased that Joan’s season is coming up and there’s a chance she could end up with Kelsey’s dad, who was also in the audience.

    Sneak Peek of Joan’s Journey

    Jesse made a bad joke about keeping his promises with a sneak peek of Joan’s season of “The Golden Bachelorette.” We got to see Kelsey come out of the limo to talk to Joan, and then introduce her dad to her! Mark is a silver fox! I loved him on Joey’s season and I’m so glad to see him get his moment in the sun and make a possible love connection. He’s incredible! “He’s cute! Thank you! You can just call me mom!” Joan said to Kelsey! Adorable!

    Joan said that she went on some amazing dates and that she’s really excited for everyone to see her season! I can’t wait!

    Yogesh had $16,600 entering the final clue, just a few thousand short of Troy. Though he didn’t get the correct response, choosing the spleen, his small wager of $3,201 led him to victory with a final total of $13,399.

    Entering with $19,800, Troy also got the answer wrong, picking the pituitary gland. He lost $13,401 on his wager and ended up in third place. Meanwhile, Ben was the only one able to get the right answer, but he only had $3,200. Luckily, he doubled up with his wager and ended up in second place for the night.

    The 97th Academy Awards have yet to land a host, though it’s not for lack of trying.

    ABC is said to have made offers to both Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney, both of whom passed on the opportunity, as first reported by Puck News. Fortunately for the Academy and its host network, there’s still plenty of time, with the Oscars not slated to air until Sunday, March 2.

    The first outreach had gone to Kimmel, its late-night host, who’s already emceed the Academy Awards four times, including the last two years. (Ironically, his statement upon accepting the offer in 2023 read: “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.”) Nevertheless, he was the obvious choice, in large part because his last foray was widely praised and because he’s already part of the Disney family. But Kimmel ultimately said no, as he reportedly did hosting this year’s Emmy awards, which will also be carried on ABC.

    The decision may come as a surprise to those who know Kimmel to ultimately say yes to most major gigs in the name of being a good partner. After all, he’s hosted the Emmys for ABC three times, he makes an annual appearance as roast master at the Disney upfront and he keeps re-upping his late night contract despite hemming and hawing about being done. But he’s also been vocal in recent years about his desire to have more balance in his life, which played into his decision to take the summers off at Jimmy Kimmel Live.

    Mulaney, arguably a sexier if riskier bet, came next. His name has been bandied about as a potential host ever since he won over the Oscar crowd at the Governors Awards earlier this year. In fact, many saw that non-televised gig as an audition of sorts, during which Mulaney clearly passed. (Vulture went so far as to publish a piece titled, Let John Mulaney Host Everything.) The year prior, Mulaney had been asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he would ever consider hosting the Oscars. “Sure, why not?” he replied. “It would be really fun. It’s hosting the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did that.” 

    And while the comic addressed the possibly more recently, telling THR in June that he “wouldn’t necessarily say no”; in the end, he decided to pass for this year. (Don’t bother asking about the year after since he insists he doesn’t plan more three months in advance.) Though hosting the Oscars is a prestigious opportunity and still a major platform, it’s also a massive, months-long and often thankless undertaking. Plus, Mulaney would have had to give up other opportunities, including another likely (and hugely lucrative) standup tour. So, it’s back to the drawing board for ABC and the Academy, which hasn’t had to run an extensive search for an Oscars host in years. ABC declined to comment for this story, and the Academy did not immediately respond.

    This week on “Playing the Field” Ryan Field, Jen Matarese, and Gina Sirico break down episode 4 of “The Bachelorette.” Jenn Tran meets her 12 remaining men in New Zealand.

    She goes on a one-on-one date with Sam M. Is the chemistry still there? Did his unwillingness to listen to her at Sky Tower hurt his chances or did he do enough to recover from his missteps during the evening portion of their date? Sam M.’s family, meantime, has hit social media with claims that he is getting a bad edit.

    The group date took to the rugby pitch to let Jenn watch the men face off. It did bring out their competitive nature, especially for Sam N. Did our love virgin come on too strong or was he DOA? Also, Jonathon and Marcus both seemed to advance their relationships with Jenn.

    Finally, Devin didn’t have to steal time, it was all his! He got a one-on-one date where they explored the culture of the region. He loved learning about the traditions and the date brought up a lot of conversation about family and religion. They have a lot in common due to being raised primarily by their mothers and both having fathers that they don’t have relationships with at this point in time. Devin also told Jenn he was falling for her. Jenn said in an interview, not in front of Devin, that she could see him as her future fiancé.

    But wait, who is this? It’s Matthew, Jenn’s ex crashing the show. He dated Jenn for a few months three years ago. Jenn thought they were just friends, but Matthew flew across the globe to tell her he loves her and he’s ready for a real relationship and to get engaged. Wow. That’s a lot! Should she allow him on the show? What will the guys think?

    Could this possibly be the horniest season of The Bachelorette in history? When the episode opens with a warning about “scantily clad men thrusting and gyrating” (presumably so Yosef’s now-adult daughter watching at home knows to turn the episode off), I know we’re in for a wild ride. And could this be the first season of The Bachelorette where the lead’s ovulation goggles fully ruin the season?? Because if Jen doesn’t pull a Kaitlyn Bristowe and sleep with Sam M before the fantasy suites, this entire season just might crash and burn.

    Before we get to the sexual tension that’s thicker than Megan Thee Stallion after Thanksgiving, can I just ask … Why does Sam M talk like that? He speaks like someone created a Chet Hanks language-learning model — a ChetGPT, if you will. I feel like he personally owes me reparations every time he says, “I’m gonna keep the main thing the main thing.” He seems like he belongs more on FBoy Island than The Bachelorette. Dislike. Unsubscribe.

    Jen is so incredibly horny for Sam M, who is so clearly terrible for her, that it might threaten the entire enterprise. Jen!!! Stand up!!! This is not a man who puts you first or will take care of you — this is a guy who uses orgasms as a tool of manipulation! He’s going to ask you if you’ll co-sign a small-business loan so he can open a tattoo parlor–slash–car-detailing business while he’s between your legs!!! Someone please protect Jen’s heart (and her credit score)! Especially when there are so many absolute sweeties. But let’s get into it.

    It’s morning in Mel-bin and the jentlemen are absolutely over the drama between Sam M, Thomas, and Devin. (Shout out to Olivia for holding it down last week!) The quickness with which Thomas went from No. 1 sweetheart to henchman is devastating.

    The first date card of the week goes to Spencer! Sure, I guess!! In a season where I weirdly have more men’s faces and names memorized than usual, I don’t think I can remember any facts or interactions with Spencer before this moment. But he seems sweet enough. Jen says she’s looking for someone to put her first and feel comfortable. Unfortunately, the only examples that she can muster are “he put my seatbelt on for me,” so it comes off more like she’s a toddler and Spencer is an attentive stepdad. “He made sure that the corners were all baby-proofed and tested the temperature of the bathtub with his elbow.”

    It’s time for the evening portion of the date and Jen loves a sparkly gown with a boa. I get it. She’s a hot, petite bitch and she’s decided that Jean Harlow is her style icon. Jen’s narrative for this season is she’s been in a lot of toxic relationships where she lost herself, and the jentlemen are echoing that back to her. Spencer reveals that he was engaged before, and right before the wedding, his fiancée said she needed “some time,” and he dug in her phone and found out she was cheating. Jen hears this and asks if Spencer has an inherent distrust of engagements and love. Spencer says that he jumps all in when it comes to love and he’s ready to be engaged again. I’d be asking how often he sees a therapist and if he’s doing cognitive-behavioral or talk therapy. I guess they have chemistry and I guess they like each other? Spencer gets the rose and the fireworks makeout, so I guess this is more serious than I anticipated.

    Dylan, Marcus, Thomas A., John M., Grant, Jonathon, Sam N., Thomas N., Sam M., and Devin are all going on the group date, and the date card says, “I’m looking for a love down under.” It’s a Thunder Down Under–themed date, and Sam M already has his shirt open (even before he knew the theme of the date). The cast of Thunder Down Under do the iconic moves, and I’m very into the big guy demonstrating all the ways to do a body roll. “Pretend like you’re holding onto two poles and … roll.” Add him to the house. Spice it up. During this three-dance move tutorial, Salmon somehow sprains his wrist and worries about being “the first Persian to strip.” He retreats into his mind palace and cooks up a scheme that is unhinged.

    Sam M knows he has a powerful sexual hold over Jen and is ready to exploit that in front of people, and Devin is mainly worried about his body because he doesn’t have abs and does have a hairy chest. (1) Oh, Devin, there are plenty of women who are into hairy chests and soft bodies. You’ll be fine. And (2) you know who else didn’t have abs and probably had a hairy chest? BRET! Bret can do a split! We could have brought the real thunder!

    The show will be judged by Australia’s Sister Bachelorettes, and I did not know that Australia’s Bachelorette game was like this. They also had the first bisexual Bachelorette. We gotta get our eyes on Australia, and I need way more information on “Bachelorette sisters.”

    Every guy has a sexy costume and comes up with his own alter ego. Dylan is a C-E-Make you O!. Marcus is astronaut Neil Real-strong. Thomas A. is a snake charmer, and he is just carrying a snake in jeans. Sam M. is “Chef Flustered” because he makes Jen “flustered” and I want to break the spell he has over her! He whispers in her ear, “It’s not PG tonight.” Cast out this dark magic!! Devin is a dirty detective, and he strips off his coat to reveal a thong and SHAKES HIS ASS!!! YESSS!!!!! This is the energy we want to see!! Again, fellas, a soft body and a good sense of humor will get you very far. Sam M. cannot comprehend that there is another source of tactical, sexual sorcery.

    When it comes to Sam N.’s performance, I just wrote in my notes: “The Love Virgin, terrible choice.” Salmon decides to perform some spoken word with his robe on and tells Jen that he’s already falling in love with her. Nope. Nope. Nuh-uh. Send him home now. Salmon also immediately goes into self-loathing about how pathetic he is and how everyone is judging him. Sir, you’re on The Bachelorette. You’re being judged by more people than you can possibly fathom. Anyone else get the feeling that Salmon’s move in life is to go to self-loathing to dodge consequences for his emotionally impulsive moves? I’ve dated the guy who texts you “Oh my god, I’m stupid. I’m so fucking stupid” when you confront him about commenting a tongue-out emoji on Instagram baddies’ bikini pics. Jonathan gets the trophy for best performance, and everyone walks away trying to put what Salmon did out of their minds.

    At the cocktail party, Devin takes Jenn aside first and talks to her about his insecurity about his body and growing up as a fat kid. I’m here for even the barest acknowledgment of body types other than “Thunder Down Under dancer,” but we should talk about them without implying that weight loss is the solution to that lack of confidence.

    While Devin and the other guys are sitting down with Jen, Sam M. and Thomas are laughing about Salmon’s profession of love. Their skepticism isn’t unwarranted: Salmon keeps talking about how he doesn’t know what love is and saying he’s already falling in love is weird, even for The Bachelorette. But snickering and saying,“What the fuck?” isn’t the way to go. Devin feels protective of Salmon, and he’s clashed enough with Sam M. and Thomas that he’s not afraid to call them out. Salmon tries to address the elephant in the room and starts by saying how pathetic he feels; Devin just calmly says, “That’s what you were feeling; it’s okay; let’s just have respect for each other and move on.” Then Sam M. chimes in, and honestly, Devin and Sam M. said “mutual respect” back and forth so many times I didn’t know what fucking point either of them was going to make.

    Devin seems to be saying he doesn’t think anyone should be talking behind each other’s backs and that is a sign of mutual respect. Sam M. thinks that no one should disagree with him or try to confront him when he talks about anyone behind their backs and that’s a sign of mutual respect. Devin wants peace. Sam M. wants to be the big dog. Sam M. also says that Devin is a bully and the writer of the chyrons labels him “Someone who needs to look up the definition of bully in the dictionary.”

    Sam M. takes Jen aside and STRADDLES HER ON THE COUCH!!! THIS IS TOO MUCH!! THIS IS OVER THE TOP!! The only move he’s got is sex, and I hope once Jen finally hooks up with him, she’ll snap out of it. Fingers crossed. And it could be sooner than later because Devin gets the group-date rose.

    It’s time for the next group date of the week and it’s with four guys? At a racetrack?? Sure. Hakeem, Jeremy, Aaron, and Austin are on the date, and Aaron is going in with some tension because his fighter-pilot training dates have been set. That sounds like a fake reason a guy breaks up with you and is never seen again. Jen is an adrenaline junkie, and she says she’s not a gal’s gal and she prefers sneakers. Ugh. Jen. Please. There is no greater status in this world than being a girl with lots of girlfriends. I’m not here for all the “girl’s girl” discourse, but if you’re out here saying you’re not one, I am 65 percent more suspicious of you. Jen, I want the best for you, and that means gabbing with the gals over margaritas and guac for the table.

    Okay, this date. It’s a big ol’ whatever. Aaron is the only one who can drive stick and has done right-hand drive, so he gets some special time with Jen. They have a race as the final portion of the date and Jeremy makes the incredibly hot decision to park the car on the track and make out with Jen instead of winning. That’s the way to her heart. Austin ends up winning the race, but she gives the group date rose to Jeremy. My favorite part of this date is anytime they film a talking head of Jen, her lipstick is gone. It’s smudged all over her face or completely wiped off. They didn’t even pretend to touch her up.

    It’s time for the cocktail party, and Aaron must pull Jen aside to tell her that his rocket-ship laser astronaut training has to start. Instead of just pulling her aside and letting her know that he has to leave to pursue his dreams, he decides to tell her in the vaguest way possible that some of the guys aren’t here for the right reasons and some of them aren’t ready for an engagement. He says he’s not going to name names, and he’s not trying to scare her. Boo!! Tomato! Tomato! Tomato! This is just a man trying to secure his spot on Paradise by starting a storyline on his way out. Also … who is he talking about? If Thomas had said the same thing, I would get that he was talking about Devin, but who is Aaron beefing with?

    Jen goes to the jentlemen and says that Aaron said there are traitors among the group and everyone needs to be ready to banish one player at the round table. Sam M. just says, “I’m gonna keep the main thing the main thing,” and I’m one acre closer to reparations. Sam M. also says he can’t imagine that Jen would be interested in him and Devin at the same time. There’s no way she could be interested in a man like that. A man like what? Medium cute and funny? That’s who every woman ends up marrying if she’s smart. They don’t marry the fuckboy with a catchphrase.

    All the guys are bickering and fighting over who Aaron is talking about and how they all need time with Jen. Spencer yells at everyone to SHUT THE FUCK UP and says “Simmer!” Okay, this seventh-grade math teacher energy? I’m starting to see it.

    Time for the rose ceremony.

    Marcus, John M., Jonathan, Austin, Grant, Sam M., Thomas N., Dylan, and Sam N. all get roses. Sam M. says that Devin wants to be the big dog in the house and that in the real world, he’d break Devin in half. JEN! Just bang this guy and get it out of your system!!
