    If decisions about where and what to invest in are keeping you up at night, it’s no wonder: retiring today has gotten more complicated. Our great-grandparents retired with a pension and an amount from Social Security with the confidence that their income needs would be guaranteed. Any earnings their investments made were like icing on the cake.

    Today, pensions have gone the way of the dinosaur, Social Security benefits are under threat and investors are left to figure out things on their own using the money in their retirement and brokerage accounts. Through no fault of their own, we’re seeing people make dire mistakes when it comes to the allocation of these resources. Given today’s longer life expectancies and the volatility of a global market, it’s even more important than ever before that you do the right thing at the right time with the money you’re relying on for retirement.

    Here are the biggest mistakes we see investors making, along with a suggestion about what you can do instead to make sure that you don’t run out of money before you run out of life.

    MISTAKE #1: Not Understanding What You Own

    There are many different ways you can be charged commissions and fees inside of an investment but typically speaking, you pay those fees whether the account earns money or not. Too many investors keep their account statements sealed in a drawer because they’re either too afraid to look or they don’t understand what they’re looking at. Here’s the thing, though: just because you’re not looking at the bad news doesn’t mean it goes away.

    High fees create an unnecessary drag on your returns and may prevent you from reaching your retirement goals. As fiduciaries, we’ve even seen some situations where, after adding up all the fees paid out over a period of years, there were more fees charged than what the consumer earned. Don’t keep your head in the sand. Get a second opinion. Ask a fiduciary professional to walk you through the fees you’re paying on the investments you own and find out if you have better options.

    MISTAKE #2: Not Knowing How Much Risk You’re Exposed To 

    It’s been said that convincing investors to stay in the market is the horsepower that drives the market. The more investors, the more the market grows. It’s easy to make money in the market when the markets are going up, the question is, how much of that money will you get to keep?

    There are several adages — such as buy and hold — that don’t necessarily apply to the investor who is at or near the time of retirement. If you are five or fewer years away from your full retirement age, for example, then you might be in what we call the retirement red zone. This is the time in your life when losing money matters the most; make a fumble now, and it could negatively affect the earning power of your portfolio over the long term. Instead of focusing on risk and growth, protect what you have before it’s gone.

    MISTAKE #3: Not Having a Plan

    A lot of people hear the term “protection” and instantly jump to the conclusion that they won’t earn any returns. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Having a plan in place is the process of coordinating the different aspects of a portfolio — including taxes, Social Security and Medicare decisions — along with your market investments to seek both growth and protection. This is how you can get a cohesive strategy with minimal fees and less risk for maximum returns.

    These two sweet little Gelflings were the portal to a whole new world that I couldn’t get enough of. It was magical, it was dangerous, and it was perfect for an epic adventure. Not to mention, I got a special thrill when I learned that girl Gelfings had wings.

    Which is why Fathom Events’ screenings of The Dark Crystal is so excellently timed. Coming to more than 500 theaters, the film will play on the big screen February 25 and 28. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the end of Henson’s stay at MoPOP.

    What does being part of Sound Off! mean to you?

    I think it’s a huge opportunity. It means I get to play with a bunch of other incredibly talented musicians that I’m honored to share a stage with, share this event with. It means learning from people who have experience in this, and getting to share my music with them as well.

    Why do you make music? How does creating make you feel?

    I need to write music. It’s therapeutic for me. When I write it’s like—yeah, therapeutic is really the best word for it. It’s just kind of a release of the energy that I’ve kind of been building up. I often write when I feel inspired, but I also write just when I need to get through something and work out an issue. It’s kind of like writing in a diary, but that sounds pretty cheesy so I don’t know [laughs]. And it’s also something that I really love: the challenge of getting creative with writing and switching it up and trying something new. I’m just really passionate about it.

    What do you hope to achieve through your music?

    I have a very specific message of hope that I intend to present to people. And they can take it or not. [Laughs] It’s up to them. But I really want to be able to relate to people, as well as let them know that even though we’re struggling, there’s something there over the hill.

    It’s a great responsibility, because you have to prepare yourself for something that’s very Jurassic and big. The judges and everyone in this program expect a lot from you. It means a Jurassic amount of responsibility and execution on stage.

    Why do you make music? How does creating make you feel?

    Music is the only thing that makes me sane. That’s what I say. I have a really hectic life, so music is definitely like therapy. It’s therapeutic for me. It’s like a personal journal, for example, when I’m writing music. It’s like storytelling. It’s always there, and that’s why I write music.

    What do you hope to achieve through your music?

    I want to change how R&B is perceived. Most R&B artists don’t really use live bands when they perform. I want to change how R&B’s translated. I want to fuse a lot of genres together like R&B, Jazz, Soul, [and] Blues all together into one genre. My goal is to create a genre. And that’s what I have to offer.

    Railroading fans and history buffs of all ages will have one more reason to visit Texas State Railroad in 2018.  During the spring of 2018, Texas State Railroad (TSR) will place into service a restored FP9 streamlined passenger unit, number TSR 125.

    The addition of this classic diesel locomotive to the railroad’s fleet culminates a five-year effort initiated by the Texas State Rail Authority and completed by The Western Group. Both entities are enthusiastic about finalizing the restoration of this period diesel which complements the railroad’s notable roster of steam engines. These remarkably restored engines aren’t just for show; all of the railroad’s historic powerhorses provide timeless journeys along the Piney Woods Route between Palestine and Rusk, Texas.

    Between 1954 and 1959, General Motors built 481 of the FP9 and FP7 locomotives to haul passengers during the “Golden Age” of streamliners. Debuting in March 1957, TSR 125 was fabricated for the Canadian National Railway for use on passenger trains like its famous “Super Continental” which operated from Montreal to Vancouver, British Columbia. The unit develops 1750 horsepower from its 16-cylinder diesel engine while a separate generator provides electrical power for heating, air conditioning and interior lighting. It is identical to locomotives used by several historic railroads which served Texas, including the Rock Island, the Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, Frisco and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the “Katy.”

    Texas State Railroad will apply a paint scheme inspired by Katy’s fleet of passenger diesels, including those used on the famed “Texas Special” which operated between St. Louis and San Antonio. The striking red, yellow and silver palette is the perfect complement to the railroad’s historic passenger car color scheme. The restored FP9 diesel will pull these 1920s cars on a number of select dates throughout the 2018 season.

    TSR’s sister Railroad, Verde Canyon Railroad, based in Clarkdale, Arizona, also operates two rare FP7 streamlined locomotives on its excursion trains through the picturesque Verde Canyon near Sedona, Arizona. With these marvels of motive power, it’s no wonder that Verde Canyon Railroad is designated an “Arizona Treasure” and Texas State Railroad is the “Official Railroad of Texas.” For more information on TSR’s 2018 schedule, visit TexasStateRailroad.net or call 855-632-7729.

    It’s easy to dismiss Jackson Pollock’s No. 5, 1948 as a senseless splatter of paint—but even if you can’t appreciate its aesthetic, this piece of art has a history that’s worth its weight in house paint and stacks of cash. Here are 10 facts about the late artist’s masterpiece.

    In the wake of World War II, New York City artists like Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Willem de Kooning began pushing the boundaries of their paintings in a direction that would be dubbed “Abstract Expressionism” by art critic Robert Coates in 1946. This wave of modern art made New York the center of the art world, thanks in part to the movement’s embrace by esteemed collector and patron Peggy Guggenheim. Pollock’s contribution was his drip paintings, including No. 5, 1948.

    Rather than working from an easel, Pollock would place his canvas on the floor and pace around it, applying paint by dripping it from hardened brushes, sticks, and basting syringes. Pollock had only begun experimenting in this form the year before No. 5, 1948’s creation, but his style soon became so signature he was dubbed “Jack the Dripper.” 

    “On the floor I am more at ease,” Pollock said. “I feel nearer, more part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides, and literally be in the painting.” 

    Drip painting came to seen as a form of “action painting,” a term that was coined by American art critic Harold Rosenberg in 1952. In a catalogue for a 1958 exhibition at the The Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts, Rosenberg said, “Action Painting has to do with self-creation or self-definition or self-transcendence; but this dissociates it from self-expression, which assumes the acceptance of the ego as it is, with its wound and its magic.”

    Pollock’s works were revolutionary on several levels. For centuries, artists had sketched out or test-run their large-scale paintings. But not Pollock, who was instead guided by emotion and intuition as he wove around his fiberboard base, dropping and flinging paint as his muse demanded. He abandoned brushstrokes in favor of drips and splashes, and set the art world on fire with his impromptu masterworks.

    An important element of the drip method was paint with a fluid viscosity that would allow for smooth pouring. This requirement meant traditional oil paints and watercolors were out. Instead, Pollock began experimenting with synthetic gloss enamel paints that were making old-school, oil-based house paints obsolete. Though this clever innovation was praised, Pollock shrugged it off as “a natural growth out of a need.”

    On June 18, 2006, Gustav Klimt’s Adele Bloch-Bauer I sold for $135 million, making it the highest priced painting in the world. Less than five months later, No. 5, 1948 fetched $140 million. In 2011, this title was snatched by one of Paul Cézanne’s Card Players, with a price tag of $250 million. And in 2016, Salvator Mundi—which some believe was painted by Leonardo da Vinci—was purchased for $450.5 million, blowing all other contenders for world’s most expensive painting out of the water by $150 million.

    No. 5, 1948 measures in at 8 feet by 4 feet. The Guardian notes that this means each square foot is worth over $4 million.

    The New York Times reported entertainment tycoon David Geffen may have unloaded No. 5, 1948 in that 2006 sale, along with pieces by Jasper Johns and Willem de Kooning, in an effort to pull together enough capital to purchase the established newspaper. The sale of these three paintings netted $283.5 million. Yet Geffen never did buy the LA Times, even though he tried repeatedly. Once, he even offered $2 billion. In cash.

    In 1973, Pollock’s 1952 piece Blue Poles sold for $2 million. While nowhere near as expensive as No. 5, 1948, that figure was enough to make it the highest price paid for a contemporary American work at that time. Sadly, Pollock never saw either of his pieces make art history—a car accident on August 11, 1956, cut his life painfully short. 

    No. 5, 1948 appears in the 2015 sci-fi film Ex Machina starring Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson and directed by Alex Garland. “There was something about what Pollock was trying to do as a painter that had to do with the automatic, to try to paint in an unconscious way, that fitted in a thematic … and actually a literal way … the issues that the film was talking about,” Garland explained Set Decor magazine. “So there was a Jackson Pollock painting specified, discussed in the script as a plot point, as a theme point.” The painting is also name dropped in the song “Going Down” by the Stone Roses: “There she looks like a painting / Jackson Pollock’s No. 5 … ”

    While the art critics gush and collectors lay down millions for an auctioned Pollock piece, a good portion of the public is still confounded by the artist’s output 60-plus years later. Every time one of his paintings sells for millions, articles pop up asking why. The short answer is, though his drip paintings may not be accessible, they were seminal, changing the way we think of art itself. They may not be traditionally pretty. But they are both art and art history.

    Two leading Bay Area nonprofit organizations have launched a partnership to strengthen each of their work. Pairing the expertise of Global Glimpse in education for diverse high school-aged students with CFHI’s expertise in ethical global health programs, their first joint project invites CFHI alumni to accompany Global Glimpse students as Medical Fellows to three Latin American countries.

    Global Glimpse was born out of a need for high-quality global education in the United States. The organization operates on the belief that exposure to different countries, cultures and people provides important perspective and drives young people to take action to better their world together. GG delivers leadership and global education for high-school-aged students through after-school workshops that culminate in a leadership and service learning trip to Nicaragua, Dominican Republic or Ecuador.

    I’m thrilled to join forces with an organization that we have admired for so many years, in particular, their commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse students.

    As such, CFHI alumni are perfectly positioned to accompany Global Glimpse programs and help coordinate student wellness during these trips as Medical Fellows, an undertaking that represents the first joint project between the two organizations.

    Precise Drop dispensers are compact, low cost and fully customizable. This flexibility is critical for both multi-well dispense and for multi-line dispense onto a membrane web.

    The user interface to the microcontrollers is browser-based, allowing operators to set up protocols and recipes using a smartphone, tablet, netbook, laptop, desktop computer or any other web-based device. Precise Drop also interfaces with SiLA and TCP/IP socket.

    “Precise Drop technology remains the same as it scales from benchtop to production operations,” said Ganz. “This ensures consistency and eliminates the need for retraining as systems grow.”

    The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton’s 1967 coming-of-age novel, is a staple for young readers. Even if you’ve already delved into Ponyboy’s tumultuous adolescence, you can probably still learn something about the young adult classic.

    Susan Eloise Hinton was only 15 when she began writing the novel and was just 18 when it was first published. Hinton felt compelled to write after she became frustrated with the lack of relatable pop culture being produced for teenagers at the time. “I’d wanted to read books that showed teenagers outside the life of ‘Mary Jane went to the prom,’” Hinton explained a 1981 interview with Seventeen. “When I couldn’t find any, I decided to write one myself. I created a world with no adult authority figures, where kids lived by their own rules.”

    The tense divide between the upper class Socs (pronounced “soashes,” as in social) and the lower class “Greasers” at Hinton’s high school was so bitter that the gangs had to enter through separate doors. Although Hinton was neither a greaser nor a Soc, the book is written from the point of view of the greaser Ponyboy in an effort to humanize the gang. Hinton also refrains from vilifying the Socs, a choice that reflected her belief that things are “rough all over.”

    “During that time, I did four complete drafts,” the author said. “The first draft was forty pages; then I just kept rewriting and adding details.” She got a D in her creative writing class that year because she was focused on the novel.

    Hinton originally wrote The Outsiders primarily for herself, but the mother of one of her friends read a draft and thought that the book deserved a wider audience. The friend’s mother contacted an agent in New York, and soon Viking Press signed Hinton for a $1000 advance.

    “Ponyboy Curtis is probably the closest I’ve ever come to putting myself in a book, even down to the physical description,” Hinton once said. “He had my ideas; he had my personality. And he and I both liked sunsets. My mother would yell, ‘Why are you taking so long to get the garbage can back in the house?’ It would be because I was standing outside watching the sun.” Different Sunsets was the original title of The Outsiders, “but I had a wonderful editor, Velma Varner, who thought that title would be too ‘soft’ for the story. I agreed. The Outsiders encompasses so many different levels. I’m glad I changed it.”

    Viking suggested that Hinton use her initials instead of her full name due to concerns that readers and reviewers alike would automatically dismiss a book about teenage boys written by a teenage girl. The strategy worked, and as Hinton explained on her website, “I found I liked the privacy of having a ‘public’ name and a private one, so it has worked out fine.”

    What drove Hinton to write from a male point of view in the first place? As she explained on her website, the initial choice reflected her own sensibility, but it was also strategic. “I started using male characters just because it was easiest. [I] was a tomboy, most of my close friends were boys, and I figured nobody would believe a girl would know anything about my subject matter. I have kept on using male characters because (1) boys have fewer books written for them, (2) girls will read boys’ books, boys usually won’t read girls’, and (3) it is still the easiest for me.”

    Although The Outsiders would eventually become a huge success, it didn’t fly out of the gate—in fact, Hinton’s first royalty check totaled just $12 (around $31 today). “Even in those days, $12 didn’t get you more than three tanks of gas,” she recalled. The book nearly went out of print before teachers and librarians recognized how much it resonated with young readers. To date, the book has sold more than 15 million copies and been translated into more then 30 languages.

    The emergence of an authentic, relatable novel helped teachers reach students who had grown bored with the use of traditional textbooks in English classes. “I remember going to American Library Association conferences and they were clamoring for something different. We realized there was a real market for books such as The Outsiders,” Hinton’s longtime friend Ron Beuhl told USA Today in 2007.

    The success of The Outsiders put a lot of pressure on Hinton, and the stress initially inhibited her progress on a follow-up book. To combat this writer’s block, her then-boyfriend (and eventual husband) suggested that Hinton write just two pages a day. If she could show him that, he would take her out on a date that evening. It must have worked, because her next novel, That Was Then, This is Now, was released in 1971.

    Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 big screen adaptation of The Outsiders helped spark the “Brat Pack” genre of the 1980s and jumpstarted the careers of “up-and-comers” like C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, and Diane Lane. But without Hinton’s passionate fans, the director might not have found the project at all. Coppola started considering filming The Outsiders after California high school students sent him a petition nominating him as the perfect director to adapt their favorite novel.

    A meeting with Hinton sealed the deal for Coppola. ‘“When I met Susie it was confirmed to me that she was not just a young people’s novelist, but a real American novelist,” the director said in a 1983 interview.

    Although Hinton didn’t write the screenplay, she remained closely involved in the production by serving as a location scout and even making a small cameo as a nurse. Coppola was so taken with Hinton’s charming storytelling that during filming of The Outsiders he and Hinton collaborated on an adapted screenplay for one of her other books, Rumble Fish. In the aforementioned 1983 interview, Coppola praised the author’s involvement: “Susie was a permanent member of the company. My experience with her made me realize that the notion of having a writer on the set makes a lot of sense.’”

    Controversial at the time of its publication for its frank portrayal of gang violence, delinquency, underage drinking and smoking, and strong language, the book continues to be challenged. It was ranked no. 38 on the American Library Association’s “Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of the ’90s,” and has even been banned in some schools. Thankfully, the book also has become a part of many schools’ curricula, ensuring that students will be staying gold with Ponyboy for years to come.

    The novel’s climax centers on the tragic deaths of Johnny and Dally, two sympathetic Greasers caught up in the gang drama. When asked by a fan on Twitter why they had to die, Hinton showed no mercy: “Because I am a stone cold bitch,” she responded.

    As she told Smithsonian.com in 2023, “I am very tired of talking about [it]. I don’t give speeches about it anymore. The thought of getting into it one more time is almost paralyzing. You’re lucky. This may be the last interview on The Outsiders I’ll ever give. … Oh god, for once, I’d like to discuss Rumble Fish.”

    ​​​​​​The Wahat Al Karama Visitor Center offers guests from around the world an opportunity to connect with the deep and powerful stories that are embedded in the Wahat Al Karama Memorial and the lives of the soldiers, civil servants, and Emiratis it honors. Thinkwell Group, a global experience design and production agency, provided a wide range of services to design the new visitor center exhibits, including the initial concept development, guest experience design, interior design, artifact curation, and multimedia development as well as production, installation, and technical implementation.

    The Wahat Al Karama Memorial is comprised of thirty-one massive aluminum-clad, inscribed tablets that support each other and symbolize the unity, solidarity, and mutual values of the nation, its military and civil servicemen, and its fallen heroes. The new Visitor Center Experience offers an opportunity to further explore the monument’s message of service and support.

    While visiting the center, guests can discover the history of the UAE’s Commemoration Day for fallen heroes and its impact on the creation of Wahat Al Karama through engaging media and digital touch screens with the names, stories, and legacies of the men and women who died in service to the country. An interactive recreation of the Memorial Plaza reflecting pool allows visitors to engage with the values represented by the UAE and its national heroes, while additional exhibits, touch tables, and media elements highlight the UAE’s involvement in numerous peacekeeping and humanitarian outreach programs in the region and around the world. A partial replica of the memorial comes to life with interactive media stations that allow guests to explore the translations and contextual interpretations of the leaning tablets’ many inscriptions. Visitors can also create their own bas-relief rubbings of their favorite tablet inscriptions, sign the memorial’s digital guest book, and share a photo of their experience with a message of pride that can be sent digitally and shared on social media. An immersive media room concludes the experience, leaving guests with a message of hope and an opportunity to explore the Wahat Al Karama pavilion interior through a final set of interactive touchscreen tablets.

    “Wahat Al Karama is a powerful place, and the new Visitor Center aims to give guests a deeper context and connection to the Memorial. Our design work and the exhibits created in partnership with our client teams provide new avenues for visitors from around the world to interact with the Memorial and learn about the UAE, its values, and its heroes in an inspiring and lasting way,” says Kate McConnell, Thinkwell’s Senior Creative Director on the project.

    The Wahat Al Karama Visitor Center opened on November 30th, 2017, with UAE leadership from all seven Emirates in attendance to mark the third annual National Commemoration Day in the UAE. It will serve as the site of national ceremonies throughout the year and on future Commemoration Days.

    With the first Semifinals just two weeks away, it’s time for Seattle to get to know the super talented and passionate artists taking part in Sound Off! this year.

    In early January we got the chance to ask the bands a few questions and learn more about their work together.

    Strawberry Mountain blends upbeat electronic lines, melodic vocals, and complex rhythms to build an otherworldly musical experience. Equal parts uplifting dance beats and spacey self-reflective synth pads, this is pop music at its freshest. And yet, their focus is not only on innovation but also on community. This DIY music collective is committed to creating accepting and inclusive environments for all who need one. What more could you ask for?

    What does being part of Sound Off! mean to you?

    Carter: It’s an incredible opportunity. So many people we look up to and friends have gone through here, so to be here ourselves is crazy. It’s a huge experience.

    Connor: Oh yeah, I love it. I think it’s great to kind of raise up the DIY scene.

    Francis:  It’s a bit surreal.

    Savvas: Growing up somewhere where you only really had two outlets for music and not wanting really to do either of them. And seeing this for kids, too. I wish that I had something like this growing up. It’s really cool that there’s people looking out for the success of young musicians rather than people who have been in the industry longer. being able to show that regular people under 21 that practice and play can achieve great things too.

    Carter: And other than house shows, and DIY places, and the VERA Project, there aren’t many opportunities to get on a real stage. The VERA Project is one of the few ones. So to play on a real stage with monitors? We never play [with house monitors]. We bring our own monitors.

    Savvas: Playing in a living room with like a monitor from 20 years ago.

    Carter: With all the sound bouncing around the room. It’s crazy.

    Why do you make music? How does creating make you feel?

    Carter: It just started as an outlet, and I don’t like socializing. I like hanging out in my basement. So, at some point I was like, “man, I gotta stop just playing video games and reading, and I gotta do something a little more productive.” And it’s not that much more productive, but, I dunno, it gives me something to do.

    Conner: I grew up with it. I loved listening to it as a kid. And then playing it is just amazing.

    I saw it as kind of an escape, you know? Whenever I’m feeling down or whatever music always helped me get through stuff. And even, like, writing music and just playing it is a lot to me, and it’s part of my life.

    Savvas: Yeah, it’s just the ability to have something out there that when you’re not here anymore you actually did something. To me, music is able to be spoken through any different language any type of person, can listen to music and maybe feel the same thing as somebody else or it can evoke different emotions.

    Francis:  It can inspire too. I mean, what does a record do? It sits around in someone’s garage. But, you know, maybe you make a record and someone else hears the record, then they make a record. The highest purpose of art is really to inspire. That’s all you can hope for.

    What do you hope to achieve through your music?

    Savvas: Just to show that I didn’t live an “Average Joe” existence.

    That I tried to actually—I’m not saying that people don’t try to do things—I tried to do things so that I won’t personally feel like I will be forgotten when I’m dead.

    Francis:  Turn off CNN and put on Strawberry Mountain.

    Conner: We really want to show what we love and what other people love doing. And that’s creating music for people and inspiring.

    Carter: And I like to go on road trips, and make a little money back. Not a lot. Maybe pay for some of the gas.

    Savvas: And then our booking agent can make 10% of our $80.

    Carter: They [take] home a nice $8; $72 goes to us. That’s great.

    Describe your music using only emojis.

    Conner: Is there a strawberry emoji?

    Francis: And a mountain.

    Jonathan: The tongue out emoji?

    Francis: The spicy chili! Sunglasses, trumpet, spicy chili.

    Carter: I always use the robot emoji.

    Savvas: The saxophone, with the robot. And then the bikini emoji!

    Carter: I like the one where the smiley face is going [grimaces].

    Savvas: I think the upside down smiley face.

    Carter: Let’s go with that one.

    Savvas: All of ‘em.
