Spring Blooms With Bunnies, Eaglets and Wildflowers Along Verde Canyon Railroad

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 5, 2018

Beautifully nestled between the high country of Arizona’s famous Colorado Plateau and the low elevations of the scenic Sonoran Desert sits Arizona’s Verde Valley, a wonderland of geological riches including  the red rocks of Sedona and the rare riparian ribbon of the Verde River. Curving between the Coconino and Prescott National Forests runs the historic tracks of the Verde Canyon Railroad.

This time of year the high desert awakens from its seasonal slumber, bursting with new life along the rails. Ancient cottonwoods sprout with fresh foliage, shading baby eaglets in their nests.  A crescendo of wildflowers begins in March with low-growing locoweed in delicate purples and whites, arching taller towards the sun as the golden Desert Marigold and orange Globemallow take the stage in April. Prickly Pear Cactus flowers arrive in May, their waxy yellow blooms later giving way to rich red fruits. Open-air viewing cars make a wonderful vantage point for wildflower viewing, especially with Prickly Pear Margarita in hand. As spring edges closer towards summer , creamy white yucca blooms sway in the breeze along the rail route.

Springtime welcomes favorite annual highlights such as newborn baby eaglets, the ever-popular Easter Bunny Express and a festive celebration of Cinco De Mayo.  The Black-tailed Jackrabbit, a Verde Canyon resident, may be one of the largest hares in North America but he’s got nothing on Verde Canyon Railroad’s resident rabbit, the Easter Bunny. On Sunday, April 1st, depot guests enjoy hugs, candy and photo-ops with the mischievous hare.  The fun continues onboard as the winner of the jellybean counting contest is awarded a giant jar of candies to take along on the ride. On Saturday May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, a fiesta borrowed from our neighbors to the south, will feature a delicious Mexican-inspired luncheon on the depot patio prior to the train’s afternoon departure.

Accessible only by these heritage rails, the Verde Canyon’s  rare riparian area comprises only 2% of Arizona landscape. Operating since 1912, the Railroad is right at home within its wild corridor, sharing the Canyon with javelina, mule deer, elk, coyote, bear, heron, turkey, bald eagles and a wealth of resident and migrating raptors.  Bald eagles generally nest along the Verde River from mid-winter to late spring, with eaglets fledging their nests in mid-May.

The train provides a comfortable and exciting journey as it travels a leisurely four hours from the charming Clarkdale depot to the ghost ranch at Perkinsville and back. Awe-inspiring rock formations, historic trestles, a 680-foot tunnel, ancient cliff dwellings and soaring raptors are just a few of the trip’s many highlights. First-class cars boast plush seating, complimentary appetizers and a full-service bar. Coach offers vintage Pullman-style seating, panoramic windows and snack bars. Everyone has access to open-air viewing cars offering 360-degree views and spectacular photographic opportunities.

A stone’s throw from the hillside mining town of Jerome, Verde Canyon Railroad’s Clarkdale depot is in the heart of the Verde Valley, a diverse crossroads featuring amazing adventures in every direction. Only two hours from Phoenix and 25 minutes from Sedona, Verde Canyon Railroad is the perfect Arizona day trip. Reservations are accepted at 800.293.7245 or online at verdecanyonrr.com.

It’s not the destination; it’s the journey.

  • Sebastien Preschoux [Interview]

    Sebastien Preschoux [Interview]

    [ad_1]

    1. Introduce yourself in a few words.

My name is Sebastien Preschoux, I am 35 years old. I am a self-taught artist/designer. I design and have recently started creating all my ink drawings based on spirographs, thread tensions and also using acrylic paints.

    2. Our Society is using more and more new technology, and everything you do is with your hands, why is this difficult?

There are many reasons for that. We are living in a era where everything’s fast, produced massively and widely used. Less and less people are aware of what is going on around them.
With a computer you can make everything fast-paced and very flattering, everyone can fake it, so whats the point ? Nothing personal, nothing unique.

Nowadays, the new generation disposes of images as a industrial rapidity and they are not asking themselves about where these things are coming from. Is it handmade or is it an electronic work?
When they are faced with creating handmade work, they realize the labor and time it takes. The result is way more important than a printed work that is, easily reproduced.
In my opinion, art makes sense if it is the result of the human hand.

    3. Your installations are often made natural environments. What about these conditions inspire you?

The first time I made a thread installation it was in the forest in Argentina. It is very pleasant and approachable to work in natural environments : no one disturbs you, you take the time you want, the time you need. Additionally trees are a very solid construction on which you can work without destroying anything. I like to bring these colored threads with a geometric climate on a environment that is absolutely not graphic to begin with.

    4. They look like giant spiderwebs…

Yes, its very arachnida. I called one of my installation « cocoon » because I feel like I’m becoming a really small spider when I spin.

    5. You worked with Wu Yue Nyno for an exhibition in Berlin recently. Was it a new and a good experience for you ?

Yes I had never done that before. Nyno was one of the only people with whom I aspired to do a collaboration. He invited me to Berlin and we put together this project. The object was to tell a story, to create a link between his drawings and my installations. It was very gratifying to work with him.

    6. Could you talk a little bit about your next project ?

The only thing I can tell right now is that its going to be an installation in urban environment, in Paris, this summer 2010…

New Grant Opportunity From Agentic Learning Will Help Schools Successfully Implement Student-Centered Learning

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 2, 2018

Empowering students by fostering student agency has been shown to improve outcomes, leading to gains in student engagement and achievement. But many school systems struggle to implement this approach effectively.

To remedy this problem, Agentic Learning today launched a competitive grant opportunity for school districts to work with the organization on an innovative and comprehensive one-year program to engage all learners and improve academic outcomes. Agentic Learning is conducting a nationwide search for school districts that believe student agency should be a primary goal in education and will award grants to two districts upon completion of a rigorous review process.

We have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing.

    Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO

“We believe we have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing — and this key is student agency. When student-centered learning is implemented authentically, student agency occurs. Unfortunately, this is not the experience in many schools today. As a result, students are disengaged — and learning is stagnant,” said Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO of Agentic Learning. “We are looking to partner with two school districts who believe in the importance of student agency and who are willing to do this challenging but groundbreaking work.”

“In most school districts, new innovations are implemented top-down, and teachers are treated as cogs in a machine, not given the agency they need to authentically put the deep substance of new pedagogies in place,” said Marie Bjerede, President of Agentic Learning. “Instead, we help districts give teachers ownership over the path and pace they use to lead student agency and turbo-charge learning in their classrooms.”

In Agentic Learning’s student agency program, the goal is to produce teachers who say, “I can’t believe I get paid for this,” and students who say, “I can’t believe I get credit for this,” as they find themselves achieving their goals with hard work that feels like fun. Agentic Learning’s tools and resources help districts foster these outcomes by offering an environment that supports student agency, intrinsic motivation, and flow.

Beginning today, school districts can apply for the grant, which provides the one-year Agentic Learning program and support free of charge. The application period closes on March 1, 2018.

Agentic Learning is a mission-driven company formed in 2017 to address the challenges districts face in implementing initiatives in a way that actually drives improved student outcomes. Too often initiatives with great promise have no significant effect once they make it to the classroom, or if they work in one classroom they don’t scale. Agentic Learning has developed a protocol that addresses the failure of promising initiatives to scale throughout a district that is based in fostering student agency as a component of these initiatives and empowering teachers to take ownership of the path and pace of implementation.  Through these mechanisms, the frequent systemic failure of initiatives like Project Based Learning, Inquiry, Design Thinking, and others to significantly impact student outcomes is addressed.

Step Dads Not Your Real Dad’s Rock | The MoPOP Blog

    [ad_1]

Sound Off! Semifinals begin this weekend, and we’re continuing to bring you interviews with this year’s incredible lineup of artists.

Step Dads are the kind of refreshing indie rock experience that reminds you why the genre is so darn enjoyable. Surf guitar combines with drums that balance well executed fills with sweaty-basement dance party rhythms, while surprisingly smooth vocals croon and soar with pure joy. With clear influence from greats like The Kinks and New York Dolls, Step Dads create the kind of versatile sound that’s equally at home in a grimy college house party or huge festival main stage. There’s no other way to say it, Step Dads are garage rock done right.

Check out this clip, and then read the whole interview below!

What does being part of Sound Off! mean to you?

Nate: Being part of Sound Off! is really cool because three of us, not including Zach, are from Seattle, and we’ve been part of the Seattle music community for a while. Zach has too, but he lives in Burlington, but at the same time, we’ve all heard about this thing.

It’s a great way for musicians to really get themselves out there. It’s an amazing opportunity put together by this great organization that can help people get exposure. There are a lot of really talented artists out there and it’s hard to shine a spotlight on everyone.

Nick: Like he said, we’re all from Seattle, ya know except for Zach here, and actually the three of us all did VERA Project, EMP, and STG summer camps as kids, so we’ve all kind of been here.

I’ve gone to a lot of the Sound Off! shows growing up around here, so to be a part of it really means a lot, and it’s really exciting for us. We’re really grateful.

Nate: What does it mean to you, Zach?

    Zach: Some cool stuff.

Isaac: I’ve been listening to KEXP every morning and afternoon for a long time and finally getting to be a part of the whole process and seeing how everything goes on, it’s just really great. It’s educational. It gives me a good understanding of what’s going on, and opens my eyes a little bit.

    Step Dads band photo

Why do you make music? How does creating make you feel?

Zach: It just comes natural. It feels wrong to not do it.

Isaac: Yeah, I’ve been playing music–my parents forced me into it. It was kind of a “you either play sports or you play an instrument” when I was three years old, so I started with piano and just kept going and switched off and did other things. It’s always been a big part of my life.

Nate: I feel like being a musician, in this day and age, you can draw inspiration from so many artists via streaming and Spotify, but also you can get inspired by so many other things going on in the world that aren’t just music. Especially living with these beautiful men here and being inspired by the things around us at the same time, kind of brings it all together. It’s like we’re all on the same playing level. And that’s nice to create with people who are in the same zone as you.

Nick: It’s an outlet. I might be insane otherwise.

    Isaac: Yeah.

    Nate: He still is.

    Zach: Very much so.

    Nate: We all are.

    Step Dads fun photo

What do you hope to achieve through your music?

Isaac: Getting better as a musician. Maybe being able to buy dinner every night and groceries would be really nice.

Zach: I don’t know. I just like making the music and if other people like it that’s really cool.

Nick: I think the why is kind of just—there doesn’t really need to be a why, we just enjoy it. It’s just because it’s what we like to do.

Isaac: It’s a way of life.

Nate: It’s pretty nice seeing how happy people’s faces are when you do something you like doing in front of them.

Zach: It’s crazy playing a show and seeing people singing along to your songs. Because it’s like, “you like this stuff?”

Nate: And then you’re also like, “why are you singing about my ex-girlfriend?”

But no, it’s just a beautiful thing. It’s like a common ground. You see that and you’re just like “I don’t even know who your mom is or dad, but we’re already friends. Cause you’re smiling and I’m smiling.” We’re having a good time. There’s so much crazy stuff going on in the world. It’s 2018. I mean, come on, let’s just rock and roll together for a little bit.

Describe your music using only emojis.

    Zach: Chicken emoji.

    Nate: Chicken emoji.

    Isaac: Yep. Chicken emoji.

    Nick: Yeah.

    Nate:  Chicken emoji.

Isaac: And the toilet emoji on Facebook messenger.

    Nick: Yes.

Zach: I don’t use emojis that much.

Nate: Yeah. I’m still on the colon/parenthesis game right now. It’s like a retro thing. Shows people that you’re still down to earth even though you’re texting them.

Because it’s not fair sometimes. Because when I’m talking to Zach, and I want to send him a cool emoji, he has an Android, and I don’t think I should discriminate against Zach because he has an Android and he’s going to get a little square when I send him a tidal wave emoji. So, I just say “tidal wave,” and he gets it.

    Zach: It’s true.

Nate: And he doesn’t even really understand the context either and that’s alright. We’re still friends.

Zach: There doesn’t need to be a context.

Nate: There doesn’t need to be a context for tidal wave. Am I right?

    Zach: Never.

Sam Foster The Storyteller | The MoPOP Blog

    [ad_1]

Am I starting to sound like a broken record yet? I. Love. Sound Off!

If you’re new to this series, Sound Off! is MoPOP’s annual 21-and-under battle of the bands, where 12 talented semifinalists come together to share their work in an exciting room of fellow musicians, fans, and industry professionals.

We’ve been spending the past few weeks getting to know these amazing artists before they take the stage, and now you can too.

Sam Foster is the type of musician that never stops surprising. Unexpected melodies keep his traditional blues sound fresh, while his dynamic, robust vocals use an impressive falsetto at just the right moments. But the thing that really sets Sam apart is his profound use of storytelling. Many of his songs illustrate a journey reflective of universal struggle. His stories show us characters trying to cope with their pain in a world that often makes them feel alone. It’s difficult, dangerous work to mine your personal experiences for art, but Sam Foster does it with the same expert hand found in the best storytellers. Listen to his story. It’s your story, too.

Check out this clip, and then read the whole interview below!

What does being part of Sound Off! mean to you?

Being part of Sound Off!, for me, is being part of this collective group of Seattle musicians who are all trying to integrate themselves into the scene and share their art with the world. And even though it’s a competition, for me, I can already see it’s becoming more than that. It’s like this collective effort. We’re all in the same boat. We’re all trying to get our art out there, and I’m looking forward to forming great connections.

Sam Foster at Sound Off 2018

Why do you make music? How does creating make you feel?

There’s an intrinsic musicality that I love about music. I just love notes and tones and melodies and exploring them, but then there’s this other aspect. Lots of my music deals with the topic of mental illness and my struggle with mental illness.

Starting early in my high school years, I started using music as a way to cope with my increasingly severe OCD. This was really a Godsend for me. I mean, it saved my life. I wouldn’t be here without it. It’s a release, you know? It’s a great release. And it’s a great way to make meaning of pain that seems meaningless at the time. Because if I can take those really hard experiences and turn them into something that I like, and that other people think is beautiful, that’s amazing.

What do you hope to achieve through your music?

I hope to achieve some sort of relationship with the listener, and even though they might not be able to relate to the experience of having OCD personally, they can still relate to the music in terms of their hard times in life and how we cope with it.

That’s one of my favorite things about music. I have this teacher who tells me “the most important thing in music is telling the story,” and that’s what the goal of my music is—relating to the audience. Explaining to them this story that I’m telling and really connecting with them on a personal level. Rather than just “I’m up here on the stage performing my art for you.” It’s “we’re all in this together. We’re in this story together.” I’m just the one who’s translating it.

    Sam Foster medium closeup

Describe your music using only emojis.

Oh boy. Give me a sec. I’d say, the cat devil emoji surrounding a weary-face to symbolize the way I feel cornered by anxiety sometimes. But then it transitions to some relieved face that, I guess, shows how making the music is a process in overcoming that.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 1, 2018

The first organizations that are set to benefit from the support of an exciting new funding non-profit, Eia Hawaii Fund, based in the paradise of Hawaii have been unveiled. Operating across four distinct pillars, Eia Hawaii Fund (EHF) has revealed which Hawaiian Culture and Arts and Preserving our ʻĀina partnerships will be the first it champions.

Louise K. Davies, Director of Eia Hawaii Fund, said, “We’re thrilled to announce the organizations that we’ll be working with from the outset. They’re a diverse selection that all have one thing in common, the work they undertake helps to strengthen and support our children, our communities and preserve the beauty of Hawaii. Raising funds for these exceptional and recognized nonprofits and programs will undeniably positively impact our communities and our State. Our commitment to Hawaii and its people doesn’t stop here. In the upcoming weeks, we will announce new partnerships with extraordinary non-profits and highlight their vital programs and work.”

We’re thrilled to announce the organizations that we’ll be working with from the outset. They’re a diverse selection that all have one thing in common, the work they undertake helps to strengthen and support our children, our communities and preserve the beauty of Hawaiʻi. Raising funds for these exceptional and recognized nonprofits and programs will undeniably positively impact our communities and our State. Our commitment to Hawai’i and its people doesn’t stop here. In the upcoming weeks, we will announce new partnerships with extraordinary non-profits and highlight their vital programs.

Louise K. Davies, Director, Eia Hawaii Fund

Three programs falling under the Hawaiian Culture & Arts initiative include a cultural program that aims to support and expand outdoor classrooms to improve cultural and academic learning opportunities, the Music & Arts in School Program, which pairs professional, positive musicians with young people to create inspirational environments, and the Holly J Stevenson Arts Grants that provides support for native Hawaiians and women working in music, theater, and the visual arts. The amazing non-profit organization Mana Maoli will receive direct funding for its Mana Mele Project that features an incredible Music & Multimedia Academy.

Keola Nakanishi, Director of Mana Maoli, said, “We’re grateful to the Eia Hawaii Fund for their perseverance and well-orchestrated efforts to raise awareness and funds for the local non-profits here in Hawaii that are striving to better the State’s Keiki and ʻĀina. Mana Maoli is honored to be a partner and beneficiary. There are many ways that donations could help sustain our Mana Mele Project, including sustaining our year-long after school and elective courses, school visits by artists, and producing more engaging videos.”

Numerous organizations that work tirelessly to preserve, educate, and restore Hawai‘i’s ecosystem and biodiversity are joining the EHF network under our Preserving our ‘Āina initiative. This initiative includes Coastal & Oceanic Education, Coastline Cleanup, and Native Ecosystems Protection programs. Several non-profits that have already been selected to receive funding, including Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.

Kahi Pacarro, Executive Director of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, commented, “Collaborating with cutting edge events that bring thousands of people together presents the perfect opportunity to bring the issue of plastic pollution front and center, straight to the stage. Since not everyone can come to a cleanup, we bring the lesson to them. Additional funding would mean the world to us and would allow us to clean up more beaches and to provide more help to our neighbor islands.”

Suzanne Frazer, co-founder of Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai‘i, stated, “B.E.A.C.H. is proud to be partnering with the Eia Hawaii Fund to help raise awareness of marine debris and bring solutions to this major environmental disaster. We applaud EHF for the wonderful, generous offer of funding support for non-profits which protect the ocean and coastal environment. Receiving additional funding will help immensely. We will be able to move forward with projects sooner and achieve results faster in achieving our goals of bringing awareness and solutions to plastic marine debris in order to protect marine life, seabirds, and the ocean/coastal environment.”

    About

Nonprofit Law Training Announces Western Grants Forum 2018: Cost Principles Deep Dive

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 1, 2018

The Western Grants Forum, the region’s annual grants management training conference, will return to Seattle, Washington, this April.  Nationally known grants authority Brian Tipton will lead a special program explaining the unified cost principles for Federal grants and subawards.  This “Cost Principles Deep Dive” edition of the Western Grants Forum will be held at the downtown Sheraton Seattle Hotel on April 5-6, 2018.  Full details and registration information for the event can be found on the Nonprofit Law Training website at http://www.nonprofitlawtraining.com.

This year will mark the third time that the Western Grants Forum has been held in Seattle, but the 2018 conference program is a departure from past events.  Previous editions of the Western Grants Forum have looked broadly at management of Federal grants under the Uniform Grants Guidance, which is more commonly called the “OMB Super Circular.”  The 2018 Western Grants Forum will feature a focus on costs and how grantees can properly charge their costs to Federal grants and subawards under the cost principles that are part of the Uniform Grants Guidance.

The goal of this training is to provide grants professionals the information about direct, indirect, and other costs, they need to successfully navigate Federal requirements.

Brian Tipton, Attorney and Grants Trainer

Brian Tipton, the trainer leading the conference, is a practicing attorney as well as a frequent speaker on grants management topics.  “The Uniform Grants Guidance or Super Circular made many changes to the cost principles,” said Tipton.  He continued, “Unfortunately, many grantees are still discovering these changes to the cost principles, but failure to follow these revised cost principles can have serious consequences.  Grantees can be forced to pay back funds or even lose their grants.”  According to Tipton, “The goal of this training is to provide grants professionals the information about direct, indirect, and other costs, they need to successfully navigate Federal requirements.”

Registration is currently open for the 2018 Western Grants Forum: Cost Principles Deep Dive training conference, which will be held in Seattle on April 5 through 6.  An early bird discount is available until March 5, which is also the hotel reservation cut-off date.  For more information about the Cost Principles Deep Dive conference, including how to register, please visit Nonprofit Law Training at http://www.nonprofitlawtraining.com.

  • What’s the Correct Pronunciation of ‘February’?

What’s the Correct Pronunciation of ‘February’?

    [ad_1]

In the United States, the most common pronunciation of the word February is “FEB-yoo-air-ee.” Both Merriam-Webster and American Heritage dictionaries consider the common pronunciation correct, along with the less common, more traditional standard “FEB-roo-air-ee.”

This irritates fans of the traditional standard. But the loss of the first r in February isn’t some recent habit propagated by lazy teenagers. People have been avoiding that r for at least the last 150 years, and probably longer than that.

Given certain conditions having to do with word stress and the other sounds in a word, we simply do not like to have two r’s so close to each other. The name for the linguistic process where one sound drops out because another of the same sound is too close to it is dissimilation, and it affects lots of languages.

Consider your pronunciation of the following words, and be honest about whether you really say the r’s in parentheses:

Not everybody drops these r’s, but at the same time, nobody seems to get too upset when they hear others do it.

There are, however, a few cases of r dissimilation that get people very worked up—namely, in the words lib(r)ary and Feb(r)uary. Lib(r)ary attracts attention due to its association with commonly disparaged dialects. Feb(r)uary only seems to attract attention when someone asks what the proper pronunciation should be.

Here’s a little help from the (parody!) guide Pronunciation Manual:

Things are a little different when you cross the pond—in certain British accents, the pronunciation of February includes a version of the “r” sound but shortens the syllables to three, so it’s pronounced “FEB-ruhr-ree.” You can see a detailed breakdown of how it’s pronounced in the video below. (And if you’re curious, check out the pronunciation of library in a British accent here.)

Australia, meanwhile, switches things up, going with something close to the “FEB-yoo-air-ee” American pronunciation but shortening it to three syllables, so it’s “FEB-yuh-ree.”

Now that you know all about to pronounce February in the U.S. and beyond, check out these common English words you might be saying wrong, and learn the right way to pronounce names in Irish, French, German, Arabic, and Spanish.

A version of this story ran in 2018; it has been updated for 2024.

    [ad_1]

Dear Ethereum community (and wonderful Etherheads!),

Today, January 31, 2018, is my last day as Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation.

I’m pleased to have been able to guide the Foundation as ED with my fellow directors, team leads, and outstanding group of team members, each of whom has contributed to our current position of strength. Taking the Foundation from what was an early stage startup to one of stability, with the infrastructure and resources to support the changes, improvements and challenges to come was no small feat in blockchain and cryptoland!

We have gone through a lot together to successfully move through several stages of growth in the last 2.5+ years. As a result, the Ethereum Foundation has become stronger, more solid and capable as an organization, entity and leading contributor in both the Ethereum community and the greater world of emergent tech.

Now that the Foundation has successfully launched Frontier, released Homestead and Metropolis-1 (aka Byzantium), and has the resources to continue supporting its mission and related projects, teams and goals, I feel satisfied the critical work I was tasked with has been done so that the next part of the journey may take place as envisioned.

I would like to take this opportunity to urge the community to give the incoming Executive Director and all new team members a warm and open-minded welcome as well as the time needed for organizational changes of this nature.

To my beloved team members, there are no words to express the effect and experience of working with you in the past years. You will forever be a significant part of my life and I will be rooting for you at the Foundation or wherever life takes you as I commence my own new phase.

As I will be taking care of a number of long overdue matters of a personal nature, I would like to ask our community and the media to focus on the exciting forward-looking developments at the Foundation, in the Ethereum community and in the growing global blockchain ecosystem.

I wholeheartedly wish the very best for the Foundation, the new team members and those of us who carry on here as we brave the new world to evolve and shine both together and separately.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 31, 2018

In January, Madison the City Chamber of Commerce named St. Catherine’s Village the city’s Large Business of the Year for 2017.

Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler presented the award to Mary Margaret Judy, executive director; Felichia Fields, assistant executive director; and Scott Kersh, chief financial officer at St. Catherine’s Village. The continuing care retirement community (CCRC) offers unparalleled facilities, beautiful outdoor spaces, a thoughtful staff, resident-centered care, and a mission-focused environment.

“St. Catherine’s Village truly embodies what Madison has achieved as a certified retirement community,”

Mary Margaret Judy, Executive Director at St. Catherine’s Village

“St. Catherine’s Village truly embodies what Madison has achieved as a certified retirement community,” said Mary Margaret Judy. “We are honored that the chamber appreciates the value we bring to the city.”

To qualify as a certified retirement city, Madison passed a three-month intensive screening process conducted by Hometown Mississippi Retirement, the state’s official retiree attraction program. The city was evaluated on several criteria important to retirees: cost of living, tax rate, low crime, quality medical care, recreation, educational and cultural opportunities, and most importantly—a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Madison, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017, also has been awarded the seal of approval by the American Association of Retirement Communities and is nationally ranked as one of the best retirement locations in the country. Both the chamber of commerce and the city actively promote Madison as a retirement haven.

St. Catherine’s Village is no stranger to awards, itself. In 2017, it was named Best Retirement Community and Best Assisted Living Facility by the Clarion Ledger—recognition it received in 2016 and 2015, as well. In addition, Keep Mississippi Beautiful acknowledged the St. Catherine’s Village “Green Team” for its exemplary efforts in keeping Mississippi beautiful two years in a row.

Furthermore, the all-inclusive life care community was the first in the state to earn accreditation by CARF-CCAC. This “commitment to excellence” seal signifies that the campus exceeds the standards established by the only international accrediting body for CCRCs. Furthermore, Campbell Cove and the Hughes Center are both licensed by the State of Mississippi as “Alzheimer’s Assisted Living” facilities.

All adults 62 and older are welcome at St. Catherine’s Village, where they are encouraged to enjoy fullness of life, health and faith. Housing options include independent living in apartments and garden homes, assisted living in Marian Hall, memory care in Campbell Cove and Hughes Center, and skilled nursing in Siena Center. St. Catherine’s Village now offers skilled nursing dedicated to memory care, as well.

In each lifestyle stage, residents pay a monthly fee that covers utilities, services and amenities that make living comfortable, carefree and secure. In addition to companionship, St. Catherine’s Village offers enriching activities with an activity director who coordinates a variety of clubs, groups and events to keep residents engaged, energetic and excited. The property boasts 160 acres of wooded grounds along with 24-hour on-duty security.

ZUMA Wire Update: Gates Foundation Invests $45 Million for Health Initiatives in Burkina Faso

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 30, 2018

The latest from ZUMA Press Wire Service says The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced plans to invest more than $45 million over three years in support of ongoing efforts in Burkina Faso to improve nutrition and the health of women and children in the West African country.

Announced by Gates Foundation co-chair Melinda Gates during a visit to the country’s capital, Ouagadougou, the investment includes $34 million for government programs aimed at reducing childhood stunting by half by 2020. Another $10 million will support family planning programs aimed at helping women plan and space their pregnancies.

Burkina Faso has made significant progress against poverty, hunger, and poor health in the face of big challenges and is inspiring other countries in the region to do the same. This progress is no coincidence — it takes leadership.

    Melinda Gates, Gates Foundation Founder

In addition, as part of a $15 million regional funding initiative that includes Benin, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo, the foundation will match every dollar invested by the government of Burkina Faso in 2018 in the purchase of contraceptives. Investments by the foundation also will support higher quality and more timely data collection, enabling partners to measure progress on family planning and nutrition initiatives, design more effective programs, and pinpoint areas of greatest need.

“Burkina Faso has made significant progress against poverty, hunger, and poor health in the face of big challenges and is inspiring other countries in the region to do the same. This progress is no coincidence — it takes leadership,” said Gates. “There is enormous opportunity ahead. If countries like Burkina Faso continue to increase their investments in health and development, then unprecedented progress is possible — and every woman, man, and child in this country will benefit.”

  • A Car Fridge is the Best Accessory for All Australian Drivers – Not Just 4WDers

A Car Fridge is the Best Accessory for All Australian Drivers – Not Just 4WDers

    [ad_1]

There is nothing like a cold drink on a searing hot day. It’s not only refreshing to have one on hand – it can be downright dangerous not to.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 31, 2018

It seems Australians are never too far away from their car, and that’s why a car fridge is probably one of the most useful accessories you can fit into your vehicle.

For years 4WDers have known the convenience of installing an Adventure Kings fridge in their 4×4, but did you know that you can install a 12V fridge is almost any car? Even one that never leaves the city.

You’ll use your car fridge for keeping drinks and halftime oranges cold at kids sporting events, for safely storing your lunch away from sticky-fingered colleagues, and even as a beer fridge when friends and family come to stay.

You might be thinking that a few bags of ice and a cooler has served you well enough all these years, but consider that once you fill your typical icebox with a bag or two of ice, there is barely any room left for drinks!

With a Kings car fridge, you not only save on the cost of bags of ice but you can fill the entire refrigerated compartment with drinks or food and save precious space in what is likely an already jam-packed car on your next road trip.

You also won’t need to worry about your ice melting with a car fridge, Adventure Kings car fridge is also a freezer.

The first thing you need to consider when choosing a car fridge is where in your car you will be putting it. If you own an SUV or station wagon, the obvious place to install your Adventure Kings car fridge is right at the back of the cargo area where it is easily accessible.

For a sedan, depending on the complexity of your installation you might place it securely in the cabin, or run a power cable to the boot. Remember that the temperature in your car boot will likely be higher than in the air-conditioned cabin, so the lowest temperature your car fridge can reach will be impacted.

Once you have decided on the perfect place for your car fridge you can look at the various sizes available and decide what best fits your needs. The Adventure Kings 80L fridge/freezer fits a massive 111 cans and is perfect for larger cars and SUVs, while the Kings 60L car fridge is more suitable for smaller cars like hatchbacks and sedans.

Installing a car fridge can be as easy or complex as you want it to be. If you just want a car fridge that you can put in and take out of your car between road trips with ease, the process is extremely straightforward.

Simply find a secure location in your vehicle for your car fridge and plug the 12V (DC to DC plug) into a cigarette lighter style socket in your vehicle. Many modern cars even have these sockets installed where they are accessible from the back seats or in the rear cargo area for exactly this kind of use.

Your drinks will stay cold the whole way to your destination, and if your destination has 240V power (like in your home) you can switch the cables on your Kings car fridge and plug it in to keep it cold without needing to transfer food and drinks into another fridge. If you are going to leave your car fridge in your car, just remember to turn it off when you reach your destination to preserve the charge in your car battery.

If you live or work on the road, or often head bush for extended camping trips it’s possible to install a 12V charging system so that you never have to turn your car fridge off.

For this, you will need one or more AGM deep cycle batteries and a DC to DC battery charger that will charge all your batteries from your car’s alternator while you drive. These auxiliary batteries will be what powers your car fridge, leaving your primary battery fully charged to ensure your car starts once it’s time to leave.

A good DC to DC charger like the CTEK D250SA will also allow you to charge your batteries via solar. If you have a quality solar panel or solar blanket and plenty of sunshine you can stay where you are with your fridge icy cold indefinitely without having to run your car engine to help top up your battery bank.

If you’re serious enough about installing a 12V and solar charging system so that your car fridge can run 24/7, you should also consider some accessories such as a fridge slide for easy access, and a fridge cage to protect your fridge from your other loose cargo.

Next time you’re looking at buying an icebox or planning a road trip, consider if a car fridge is right for you. With the incredible quality and value for money of the Adventure Kings fridge/freezer range, a car fridge is within reach of all car owners – not just 4WDers.

New Global Commission Will Examine How Emerging Technologies Can Benefit The Poorest

The copy warned the Little Blind Text, that where it came from it would have been rewritten a thousand times and everything that was left from its origin would be the word “and” and the Little Blind Text should turn around and return to its own, safe country. But nothing the copy said could convince her and so it didn’t take long until a few insidious Copy Writers ambushed her, made her drunk with Longe and Parole and dragged her into their agency, where they abused her for their projects again and again. And if she hasn’t been rewritten, then they are still using her.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it.

The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen.

    Longe and Parole

She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way. Capitol Call App Launches Balanced Political News Feed Among Other Major Updates on 1 Year Anniversary

Recognized as one of the top influencers of app culture in 2017, the app also adds representative scorecards and expanded calls to action.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 30, 2018

Capitol Call, a non-partisan political activism app that takes the guesswork out of calling Congress and puts lobbying power in the hands of the people, has announced a series of major feature enhancements as it celebrates its one-year anniversary.  In a continuing effort to increase political engagement and activism, the app has added new features to help users become more informed, stay motivated to act and have a convenient method to lobby their lawmakers for change.

    App updates include:

We don’t have to be ‘somebody’ to get informed, pick up the phone, call our reps or cast our ballots.

    Brandon Peterson, Founder, Capitol Call

    • News Feed feature, powered by NewsAPI.org, with the goal of encouraging users to create a balanced feed by including media bias data from AllSides.com.  Additionally, it helps users escape their filter bubbles and see diverse perspectives by offering news from dozens of different sources.
    • Representative Scorecards to help users prepare for the 2018 midterms with ‘next election’ notices, details and text of bills their representatives have sponsored and stats on their elected official’s activities in Congress.
    • Expanded community-powered Action Center adding support for state and local campaigns to complement the existing nationally focused feed. Along with a new user interface for accessing state and local representatives, this feature brings advocacy tools to all levels of government and makes Capitol Call about more than lobbying Washington.

Building on a successful first year, which includes being named as one of 20 influencers in Apple’s 2017 App Culture Highlights and App of the Day, Seattle-based entrepreneur and founder Brandon Peterson, was inspired to create the app during last year’s Women’s March.

“When I started this project last year, I really didn’t know where it would go. I was inspired to action by the excitement of the Women’s March – but I really didn’t appreciate the power that one voice can have,” said Peterson. “I’m not ‘somebody.’ I don’t have a ‘following,’ or a position of authority, or a strong connection to the activism community. But I decided to take action. If I take anything from this experience it’s that you don’t have to be somebody to do something.”

“Many of the new features in this release, and those to follow, speak to that idea,” Peterson continued. “Informing people so they can feel confidence and gain perspective. Guiding people so they have direction and purpose. Empowering people to amplify their voices in Washington and in their communities. We don’t have to be ‘somebody’ to get informed, pick up the phone, call our reps or cast our ballots.”
