Apostolic Diocese of Ceylon on Sri Lanka Attacks: All Communities Deserve Equal Treatment

    [ad_1]

The following is an open letter from Rev. Kirby de Lanerolle, Chief Overseer of the
Apostolic Diocese of Ceylon, on eradicating terrorism in Sri Lanka.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 30, 2019

In the wake of mourning, we owe ourselves some soul searching as how we respond and move forward will shape and determine the vigilance of our nation towards hate. It is true of the saying that united we stand and divided we fall.

The spirit of hatred knows no kind, no race, no face. Though these recent attacks were targeted at churches, hotels and tourist spaces on Resurrection Sunday and hoards of worshiping Christians and Catholics lost their lives and loved ones – many of the victims were in fact Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and atheists… it is almost unbearably painful to think this tragedy could have been avoided or even mitigated.

Could it be that a systematic de-sensitization towards minority rights were the cause for negligence by the authorities to act on the warning they received more than a week prior to the fatal terror attacks on Resurrection Sunday? It is of common knowledge that Sri Lankan Christians have lived in jeopardy without recourse to some of the most basic fundamental rights.

The simplicity of burying the dead in public cemeteries, construction of their churches or refurbishment, are violently objected in many areas. When pastors and believers go to the police after such attacks, investigations and responses have been slow or altogether void. The authorities’ responses to the current situation, where they indicated that they had prior information that attacks were going to take place but didn’t think it would be on this scale, is a case in point.

    This alludes to two questions:

    1. If the response to ‘smaller’ mob attacks and threats of violence go un-addressed, how would pre-warnings of large scale attacks be treated any differently?
    2. If the prior intelligence information that was received pointed to attacks on parliament, ministerial residences, temples and other “high priority” targets, would the response from authorities have been different?

The Apostolic Diocese of Ceylon (ADC) revived its mandate in 2015 as the need constituted the call to Cover, Protect, Advocate & Educate the free churches in Sri Lanka. In less than a year we welcomed over 600 churches because of the Advocacy and protection that it was offering.

Some of the higher Echelons of government have been sympathetic towards the rights of Christians, but unfortunately, this has not filtered down to de facto bodies who carry out the protective work at the grass root levels. When frequent outcries of a minority in trouble fall on deaf ears of law enforcement rank and file, systematic de-sensitizations render these state bodies ineffective to be alert to threats, regardless of the magnitude of those threats.

Police stations throughout Sri Lanka are so used to getting complaints from Christians that are persecuted that most of these allegations of discrimination and violence are met with patronizing gestures and seldom receive an effective response. Many a time, higher officials and ministers have to be contacted and influenced to ensure that Christians’ most basic rights are protected and that a vigilant investigation and protection system are in place.

It is vital that we call upon our nation’s leaders to lead by example and carry out their roles in a mindful manner that will not seed division and discrimination. Citizens and residents of Sri Lanka are watching closely for the protection that will be afforded to them as a whole in this state of emergency. It would assure us if the President who chairs the National Security Council would clearly state that protection would be given to all Christians.

Many of the free churches have canceled their services and still remain vulnerable, yet threats to them still remain unnoticed or ignored. Protection only for our larger denominational brothers that constitutes more Parliament election votes won’t safeguard a democracy in the long run. If the highest authorities adhere and show strong “political will” to give equal attention to the least and the softest voice, it sensitizes the rank and file towards vigilance and comprehension of the seriousness of religious hate. A top-down approach is essential to solidify the inter-religious harmony that the island claims to embody.

The free churches have been meeting for many years in hotels, town halls and convention centers because they often have no set structures of their own. Terrorist attacks are attracted towards vulnerable unprotected groups. It would be a faux pas to protect only the more predominant denomination when part of the attackers’ intentions was clearly targeting Christians as a whole. This has been a historical reoccurrence in Sri Lanka. Since Christian persecution has been negligently handled, this segment’s vulnerability can be attractive to extremist and terrorist hate cells to take advantage of. It could be considered that one possible reason Sri Lanka was selected for this attack might be due to the fact that Christians are known to be unprotected vulnerable targets, simplifying the organization of violence against them. While the pressing question at present is why the prior report on the attack was ignored by a large body of authorities, it becomes easier to comprehend the lapse when one considers that authorities routinely ignore or gloss over threats against Christians.

It is time that the government clearly states that religious hatred even to the smallest of us will be taken seriously. Sensitivity has to be built through awareness. Minority rights require to be promoted and protected with the same gusto, the same political-will backed sentiment and same effectiveness as the rights of majority groups; when the state affords all its citizens equal treatment, it is a healthy symptom of a good democracy.

It’s time as a nation, to search our hearts deeply and be able to have more sophisticated dialogue as to why we are intolerant towards others’ beliefs. If we do not consider our own prejudices and how we can nation-build, without fear of accommodating every race and faith as an equal stakeholder we would leave a divided nation for generations to follow.

Today, moderate Muslims are in fear of a backlash, solely because one group can scandalize the entire community as radicalized. This leaves many who belong and love Sri Lanka in fear of their own countrymen because we have not taken the time to open dialogue and assure them they are safe and not vulnerable to misplaced backlash. This must not be allowed to happen by Christians who have suffered this violence. Sensitivity to go deeper into understanding the groups that make up this beautiful island is a conversation that needs to be embraced. If we are to not move backward as a country, progressive religious and political leaders would need to sit together and take ownership of each other and account for each other’s well being. Even the smallest minority on this island, who may not possess the slightest political clout, still requires to be afforded the fundamental rights and equality of the whole. There is nothing less that every Sri Lankan deserves.

Our continued heartfelt prayers and support go out to everyone affected – of all origins and faiths.

  • New Non-Profit Launches With ‘Bullish’ Outlook on Newark’s Education Future

New Non-Profit Launches With ‘Bullish’ Outlook on Newark’s Education Future

    [ad_1]

New organization wants to show the nation that Newark can demonstrate ‘third way forward’ on public education

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 30, 2019

As public education in Newark undergoes another major transition, a new non-profit organization is launching with a bold vision for what’s possible. The organization, named the New Jersey Children’s Foundation (NJCF), intends to show the rest of the nation that cities can move past the acrimony and us-versus-them politics of education reform to create systems of district and charter schools working together to improve opportunities for ALL children.

The new organization’s mission is to invest in people, programs and partnerships that will improve public education systems by putting the interests of children first. Its vision is that each and every child will break down the walls of inequity through the creation of high-quality public education systems.

“Children have been the biggest beneficiaries of the improvements to public education in Newark over the last decade,” said NJCF founder and Executive Director Kyle Rosenkrans. “But no one should run a victory lap until every child can get into a great public school.

“That’s why Newark’s next phase of locally driven leadership is so exciting. The city can show the nation that it’s possible for a system of district and charter schools to work together and expand educational opportunity.”

The new organization will focus on three issue areas:

    1. Citywide School Performance. Newark has come a long way but needs a consistent, fact-based discussion about student outcomes, one that is unafraid to talk about both the successes and failures, and leads to real improvement strategies.

    2. District-Charter Collaboration. Newark can be a national model for how we create systems of high-performing public schools, with great district and charter schools living side by side as neighbors and collaborators.

    3. Fair Funding for All Public Schools. There are tremendous inequities in the way both district and charter schools are funded in New Jersey. We will work alongside anyone dedicated to fixing this problem so that every student in the city has the resources they need to learn at the highest level.

NJCF will do three things to advance these issues:

    1. Publish policy, data and research to promote a fact-based discussion about what’s working and what’s not and identify potential solutions.

    2. Support grassroots advocacy projects to increase the number of people involved in the discussion about public education.

    3. Fundraise for proven, citywide solutions to improve student outcomes.

The new non-profit is launching with a board of experienced professionals that it hopes to expand over time. Board chair Everett Johnson was born and raised in Newark and is now a partner at the prestigious Wilentz law firm, specializing in municipal finance. Board member Modia Butler is a partner at Mercury Public Affairs and a top advisor to New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. Kevin Shafer is a founding board member and a partner with the City Fund, a new national philanthropic initiative that is supporting NJCF’s launch. Kevin has deep experience in working in large city school districts focused on improvement.

Founder and Executive Director Kyle Rosenkrans has worked in Newark for more than a decade. Kyle is a first-generation college graduate from New Jersey who went on to become a civil rights attorney, law professor and public policy advocate. Kyle’s career has covered a variety of social justice initiatives in Newark: K-12 education reform, low-income housing preservation, assisting victims of foreclosure scams and related research about the impact of foreclosures on Newark communities, LGBT rights and police brutality, anti-bullying policy and prisoner reentry. He is a successful fundraiser who spent the last two years helping KIPP New Jersey build and launch a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign — raising millions in pledges for the non-profit organization. Prior to this, Kyle spent five years as lead education attorney at Essex-Newark Legal Services, two years as a visiting law professor at Seton Hall Law School’s Center for Social Justice in Newark and several years as the CEO of the charter school association in New York and Connecticut. He is a fellow of the Leadership Newark class of 2011 and proud father of a 5-year-old son.

ManagedMethods Partners with Google for Education to Provide K12 Districts With Advanced Cloud Security

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 30, 2019

ManagedMethods announces their new certified partnership with Google for Education. As part of the Google for Education partnership program, ManagedMethods will be even better equipped to continue helping K12 school districts protect sensitive student information. The platform is also key to helping districts remain compliant with federal and state regulations, such as FERPA, COPPA, and CSPC.

“When we learned that K12 school district information is among the most vulnerable to cyber attack, we knew we needed to do something to help,” explains Charlie Sander, CEO of ManagedMethods. “We had the technology and the cost structure to be able to focus on this really underserved area in the cybersecurity industry.”

90 million teachers and students are using G Suite for Education worldwide. And while Google provides administrators with a high level of security controls and compliance safeguards, many system administrators were finding they lacked the visibility and control they used to have with on-premise IT. That’s where ManagedMethods comes in.

ManagedMethods’ partnership with Google for Education means better Google application monitoring and control for K12 IT administrators. ManagedMethods will be able to continue improving the product, in close collaboration with the Google for Education team, to bring greater value to K12 school districts. But, most importantly, it will help us all improve on our mission to keep students, teachers, and staff safe and their information secure.

    About ManagedMethods

ManagedMethods makes cloud security easy for IT managers of K12 school districts, local governments, and mid-market companies. The platform provides visibility and control over activity in an organizations cloud applications, such as Google G Suite and Microsoft Office 365.

With ManagedMethods, organizations gain data security from internal and external breaches, threat protection from malware and phishing schemes, and full control over account behavior. ManagedMethods is easy to use, affordable, and requires no special training for administrators. Best of all, it has no impact on network performance or end users.

Creating She is FIERCE with Artistic Director Francesca Betancourt

    [ad_1]

Seattle is a city full of stories, but not all stories get the same opportunities to be told.

Francesca (Cessa) Betancourt is helping to amplify Seattle’s female and genderqueer stories through the recurring storytelling event She is FIERCE. Constructed around a theme chosen in advance, these semi-annual events act as a platform for a diverse group of storytellers to share stories that matter to them.

At the opening party for A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, six She is FIERCE performers will share the stories that live in their clothes.

Learn more about She is FIERCE Artistic Director Cessa below and join us at the exhibition opening party May 10.

    Interview with Cessa Betancourt

What attracts you to storytelling as a medium?

There is something undeniably affecting and inspiring about watching someone share a piece of their life in a public space. It’s accessible to anyone; you don’t have to love or be involved with the performing arts to “get” storytelling. It runs in everybody’s blood to tell and listen to stories and to then use those stories to reflect on ourselves. I feel like I’m always reconnected to what it is to be a human when I watch someone tell a true story onstage.

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes Heroine artifact

Serena Gill, France | Discipline collection, 2012

What inspired you to create she is FIERCE?

A few years ago, my co-producer (then just my best friend and roommate) and I were listening to a podcast where a bunch of women were being interviewed on different themes, and I realized how seldom I actually got to hear from other women, honest and uncensored. And how, in fact, most of the things I consumed were either from the perspective of or curated by men.

The idea for the show came from me simply craving to hear more perspectives from people that weren’t cis men. I wanted to hear what those people thought of every social issue, what made them laugh, what they’d struggled through; what made them mad, what made them feel good. Upon realizing there wasn’t really any space in our community to go witness stories like that, we made one.

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes Explorer artifact

Minna Palmqvist, Sweden | No Body—Trying So Hard, 2015

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes is themed around six archetypes: Thespian, Mother Earth, Explorer, Enchantress, Sage, and Heroine. Which archetype do you most identify with and why?

To be honest, I think I am (like maybe most people) a combination of all those things. I’m a thespian by trade who’s outdoors — and probably barefoot — constantly, who loves new places, who believes in magic, who can be wise and brave when I need to be.

I think partially that might be why these are the archetypes focused on in the exhibition, there is some version of all six of them inside every womxn.

Enchantress Gallery Section in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

The Enchantress section of A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

The exhibition tells the story of these archetypes through fashion. What’s one thing you feel fashion does well? How would you like to see fashion evolve in the future?

I think fashion is one of the ways we control how we move through the world and how we are perceived. In a lot of ways, it’s our first line of defense or offense in every interaction.

And it’s creative, everyone is an artist creating something new when they get dressed in the morning. I would love to see fashion become more inclusive of all bodies and gender identities, as well as support and celebrate (rather than oppress or ignore) people’s individuality.

  • Beginning a new ethereum.org | Ethereum Foundation Blog

Beginning a new ethereum.org | Ethereum Foundation Blog

    [ad_1]

    Hello, world!

    Welcome to the new ethereum.org.

This is the beginning of the ethereum.org relaunch, not the end. As explained in more detail below, the new website is intentionally a work in progress. It’s launching as an experiment, intended to grow and iterate in public as it is improved by the community — just like Ethereum.

    Three core principles

As we’ve progressed towards a re-launch of ethereum.org, we’ve been guided by three core principles:

    1. Ethereum.org is a portal to community-built resources

One of Ethereum’s greatest strengths is its massive decentralized community. Over the past few years, the community has stepped up to create invaluable resources: documentation, wikis, newsletters, tutorials, discussion forums, and more.

Ethereum.org’s purpose is to be a portal to those resources, not a substitute for them. Ethereum.org will prioritize linking to content created by the community, as opposed to hosting native content on every topic. Through community contributions, the website will evolve over time to always surface the best relevant material about Ethereum.

    2. Built in the open, with the community’s help

Ethereum.org is re-launching as an MVP, and the design intentionally evokes a simple blank slate. We want your help to update and improve it over time – check out the contributors guide or list of open issues if you want to get started.

Right now, there are just four subpages, (Beginners, Use, Learn, and Build) but we anticipate adding new ones over time. We also expect to solicit submissions from the community for re-designs of whole subpages – stay tuned for details about how to get involved.

The dominant feature of the landing page is a large “HERO” style image, and the current one is only temporary. We plan to change it regularly as we receive submissions from the community, rotating the art over time. If you’re interested in submitting a new HERO image design, reach out to us at website@ethereum.org.

Want to learn more? Head to Github and read the contributors guide.

    3. Not your typical product website

Ethereum is the largest open-source blockchain community in the world. Development of core technology is distributed across many different organizations, and the network is used live in production to secure billions of dollars worth of digital assets and other valuable state. Ethereum is the most technically mature and most widely-used programmable blockchain in the world.

Ethereum is different, and ethereum.org should be different too. It won’t ever be a typical product website, because it isn’t trying to sell you something. This is a website for a community that is busy getting things done: on-boarding new developers and users, educating ourselves and each other, and building.

    Thank you!

If you’ve been around Ethereum for a while, you know that ethereum.org has long been in need of an update.

But that delay has had a silver lining: the Ethereum community took on the responsibility of creating and maintaining documentation, community learning resources and educational material — all while on-boarding new users and developers. If you played any part in those efforts over the years: thank you.

We hope that the re-launch of ethereum.org as an open-source portal to the community will continue that important trend. Ultimately, there’s no better way to represent Ethereum to the world than by maintaining that spirit of decentralization and independence.

  • The Carnivore Diet for Mental Health?

The Carnivore Diet for Mental Health?

    [ad_1]

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Boulder Carnivore Conference, the world’s first meeting dedicated to the potential benefits of plant-free diets. For this special event, I created a new presentation exploring the nutritional differences between plant and animal foods, and summarizing the scientific arguments in support of all-meat diets for optimal brain health. Skeptical? You should be. This seemingly strange and extreme way of eating flies in the face of every piece of conventional nutrition advice we’ve been given, yet a growing number of people report remarkable benefits, including resolution of serious, chronic psychiatric symptoms. If you are curious about how this diet might help to correct chemical imbalances in the brain, please watch this video to learn more.

If you are completely new to the idea of all-meat diets, allow me to provide a bit of context, along with some additional links and resources should you care to dive a little deeper.

*An update in response to concerns expressed in the comments section: No, I am not funded by the meat industry. My nutrition work is >95% self-funded. I have no financial conflicts of interest that might bias me towards animal foods. I do acknowledge intellectual bias towards animal foods, as I’m convinced by the science (see video and resource following this article), my clinical experience, and my own personal experience (see below) that they are important to human health.

    Plant-free Diets Take Root

Have you heard? The so-called “carnivore” diet—a diet completely free of plant foods—has become something of a hot new micro-trend, thanks in part to several high-profile adopters who report that switching to an all-meat diet significantly improved their mental and physical health.

One of these ambassadors of carnivory is Mikhaila Peterson, a 27-year old Canadian who credits a meat-only diet not only for putting her juvenile rheumatoid arthritis into remission (no small feat, as JRA, is a serious and destructive autoimmune disease), but also for her complete recovery from the severe depression and anxiety she’d suffered with since the fifth grade.

Mikhaila first became aware of the carnivore diet after hearing Shawn Baker talk about the benefits of his all-beef diet on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Baker is a California-based orthopedic surgeon and multi-sport elite athlete who actively promotes the carnivore diet on social media and explores its theory and practice on his popular Human Performance Outliers podcast.

Mikhaila’s experience inspired her father, University of Toronto psychologist Professor Jordan Peterson, to try the diet in an attempt to alleviate his own depression. He has since reported alleviation of not only depression and anxiety but also of a number of bodily ailments including psoriasis and gastric reflux, as detailed in The Atlantic.

The Boulder Carnivore Conference was the brainchild of Colorado-based Amber O’Hearn, a data scientist and nutrition science writer and speaker who has adhered to a carnivore diet since 2009. She produces thoughtful, meticulously-researched articles about the science of animal-based nutrition on her website and is writing a book dedicated to the topic. In interviews such as this one, she explains how her unusual way of eating seemed to resolve her symptoms of bipolar depression, including suicidal ideation, which psychiatric medications had failed to accomplish.

    Carnivore Diets and Psychiatric Disorders

As a psychiatrist specializing in nutrition, I work with people to help troubleshoot, customize and optimize their diets to improve their mental health, with the goal of reducing or in some cases even eliminating the need for psychiatric medications. There are many different dietary strategies that can help people achieve this goal—removing processed foods, carefully supplementing whole food plant-based diets, ketogenic diets, etc. It’s important to emphasize that most people probably don’t need to go to the extreme of removing all plants from their diet in order to experience relief, and of course, no diet, including a carnivore diet, will work for everyone.

All that being said, I have consulted with many people who report significant mental health benefits on low-plant and plant-free diets. While I am not at liberty to share the details of these confidential cases, numerous compelling, public first-hand personal accounts of psychiatric conditions resolving on all-meat diets exist, including this interview with 58-year-old West Virginia-born musician Brett Lloyd and this conversation with Andrew Graf, a young entomologist in Texas, both conducted by Boston-based host Scott Myslinski on his CarnivoreCast podcast. Baker curates a collection of mental health testimonials, with 110 entries to date.

I count myself among the believers [I use the word “believers” intentionally to underscore the fact that clinical trials of the carnivore diet do not yet exist.] In 2008 I reversed symptoms of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, migraines, and IBS by gradually removing most plant food from my diet. As a psychiatrist, I was fascinated to observe that my mood, energy, sleep, and concentration improved significantly as well. I share more about my story in this interview with Ivor Cummins. [I switched from a very low-plant ketogenic diet to a pure carnivore diet in June 2018, long after this conversation took place]. It was that extraordinary experience that called me to question conventional beliefs about food and health, gave birth to my passion for the study of nutrition science, and led eventually to my first public presentation in 2012 Little Shop of Horrors: the Risks and Benefits of Eating Plants.

As surprising and powerful as these stories are, they are just anecdotes; they do not constitute formal scientific evidence. Perhaps all of these alleged improvements could be chalked up to exaggeration, wishful thinking, or coincidence. It is up to you whether you choose to dismiss them, become genuinely curious about them, or feel inspired by them. I lay out the scientific arguments supporting this way of eating in my video but clinical trials do not yet exist.

If remarkable stories of chronic mental illness being put into remission through all-meat diets are to be believed, we have to ask why. Why might a diet completely devoid of the plant foods we are told to be so healthy for us be—at least in some cases—ostensibly healthier for the brain than one containing plants?

This is the fundamental question I addressed in my Carnivore Conference presentation:

    Look Before You Leap

If you are inspired to try a carnivore diet for mental health purposes, and you currently take psychiatric medications (or medications of any kind), please read my post Ketogenic Diets and Psychiatric Medications first. Just as with a standard low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet, carnivore diets cause profound shifts in brain and body chemistry rather quickly. These changes are almost always positive and healthy, but they can have a major impact on medication levels, dosages, and side effects that require close medical supervision, particularly in the first month or two while your metabolism adjusts to your new healthy way of eating. It is very important to consult with your prescribing clinician before embarking on any low-carbohydrate diet.

Care for Life: From New York to Switzerland, Children Are Helping Save Lives After African Hurricane

    [ad_1]

All around the world, children are raising money for Care for Life’s work in Mozambique

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 29, 2019

By selling muffins, cake and play dough, two little girls from different sides of the world raised hundreds of dollars to help those who are suffering from the devastation of Hurricane Idai in Mozambique. Care for Life, a non-profit based in Arizona, has been working in Mozambique for almost 20 years. With casualties still being recorded and hundreds without power, water or food, every dollar donated helps Care for Life’s emergency relief efforts tremendously.

Emergency donations are being accepted on www.careforlife.org

Six-year-old Zara, who lives in Manhattan, New York, worked hard to raise money to help the victims of Hurricane Idai. This natural disaster is one of the worst weather events ever to occur in Mozambique. It is estimated that 90 percent of the city has been destroyed. Because of Zara, citizens in Mozambique will receive life-saving aid.

“My friends and I heard about the cyclone and wanted to help. We decided to run a bake sale on our street in Manhattan. We hope this money helps,” said young Zara.

On the other side of the world, in Switzerland, Annina also raised money to help those in Mozambique. Annina sold slime, play dough and cake. By doing something small, these girls will make a huge difference to those in Mozambique. [ad_1]

There’s that pesky word again… “content.” Now before your eyes glaze over with visions of “Top 5” articles and makeup tutorials, let me remind you that content is simply the valuable information on your website or social media platforms that you share with your prospects.

You likely already have some content built up in your repertoire. Maybe you blog about areas in your geographic farm, share videos on Facebook, or perhaps you’ve created a downloadable checklist for first-time homebuyers. If so, you’re ahead of the curve!

Guideception: AKA, Your Guide to Guides

Our friends Becky Babcock and Brad Nix of Path & Post, are onto something good. They’ve developed sleek, informative, and user-friendly guides that accomplish two things:

    • 1. They answer questions and solve problems for homebuyers
    • 2. They convert curious onlookers into active leads

Step 1. Define Your Target Audience

Guides are a great tool in real estate to get a lot of information to your prospects in a neat and compact format. But if you go too broad and try to serve everyone, your guides will lose value.

“Don’t try to be all things to all people.”

Defining your target audience can mean a few things. First, (obviously), is your geographic farm. But who, specifically, are you targetting? First-time homebuyers, luxury, retirees, secondary market beachfront buyers… get as granular as possible.

Becky and Brad take this one step further and they developed a DISC-profile-esque method for categorizing their clients. They break down homebuyers into 4 categories: Bull, Owl, Lamb, Tiger.

    • Bull: Straight-forward, busy, “just get it done.”
    • Owl: Spreadsheets, detail-oriented, process and facts
    • Lamb: Friendly, sensitive, nervous about the process, needs some hand-holding
    • Tiger: Eccentric, quick-decisions, distracted by “bright and shiny” features

In their case, most of their clients are Owls and Lambs. So using very detail-oriented guides is a great way to hand-hold and provide answers to all of their questions.

Want to Learn More About BoomTown?

Step 2. Decide on Your Content

Think about your market and your target audience and decide from there what content makes sense. Do you serve several cities? Neighborhoods? Area guides and neighborhood-specific PDFs are going to serve you well in this scenario. The best real estate agents operate as hyper-local experts. You want to be the “go-to” expert in your community, and an in-depth neighborhood guide is a perfect way to highlight this expertise.

Q: Can I outsource someone to write this for me?

A: Yes and no. You can outsource someone to proof/edit your writing and to design the guide/PDF for you, but you should write the content yourself. You’re the expert here… (if you’re not, *uh oh,* you should be!) so you really should be showcasing your knowledge.

    Ideas for Guides:

    • City Guide
    • Neighborhood Guides
    • Guide for First-Time Homebuyers
    • Home Downsizing Guide for Retirees

Step 3. Optimize for SEO & Share

You don’t have to be a computer wiz to do this! SEO (search engine optimization) just means taking some steps to help boost your content in a Google search — increase your chances of getting more traffic.

Here are a few quick steps:

    • 1. Use appropriate keywords (you can check Google Trends for the most popular search terms home buyers are using)
    • Pick a strong, searchable title
    • Use keyword-friendly headings throughout the guide
    • Write a meta-description (follow these directions)

Once you’ve optimized your content, make sure they are displayed on your site and then share across all of your social media channels. Be sure to update the content as necessary with pertinent information. Informative neighborhood and city guides should never be out of date!

PRO TIP: Create a few guides that are “exclusive” to clients who have closed a deal. These could be extremely detailed closing guides, advice for flipping, etc.

Wallifyer, a Scandinavian Digital Art Company, Proudly Presents the Launch of their Signature Collection and the Grand Opening of their Newly Designed Retail Website for Digital Downloads of Original, Hand-Drawn Floral and Fantasy Themed Clipart for Creative Paper Crafting

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 29, 2019

Designer Sandra Tornroth of Wallifyer is pleased to announce the release of her Signature Collection of hand-drawn floral and fantasy clip art at the grand opening of her newly designed retail website at https://wallifyer.com on April 30, 2019.

Wallifyer is the digital art company owned by artist and designer Sandra Törnroth in the Aland Islands, Finland. The Aland Islands are situated in the Baltic Sea between the Finnish mainland and Sweden.

The beautiful outdoor woodland scenes in the Aland Islands inspired Sandra, a lifelong artist, to create a series of ink pen drawings of fairytale-inspired clipart which she has digitized for crafting, card making and scrapbooking.

After having worked as a bank clerk for many years, Sandra made a bold decision to pursue her dream to become an art historian and artist. Already married and with two sons, Sandra went back to the university to earn her second degree, a Masters in Art in 2017. She now freelances as an illustrator, art historian and fine artist.

Inspired by woodsy nature scenes and enchanting fairytale creatures, Sandra draws her signature doodle illustrations with ink pens on paper. She then digitizes her original ink pen drawings to sell as digital download files for creative use by crafters and designers. Her art style is whimsical with a shabby chic twist.

As a Scandinavian artist, Sandra gives her drawings a minimalist vibe as well, often featuring geometric patterns and swirly lines. Her favorite subjects to draw are fairytale woodland animals, floral wreaths and whimsical creatures.

Speaking of her personal connection to the art of pen and ink, Sandra states, “For me, drawing is meditative and makes me calm and lets me escape into a magical whimsy world.” She seeks to share her art online to allow her customers to feel the same joy in using her whimsical clipart drawings in their own creative paper crafts.

As a way to enhance the crafting experience for other creative artists and designers, Sandra’s brand ideal is all about mindfulness and creativity. Her personal desire is to bring the enchanting magic of digital art with a whimsical fairytale touch into her fellow crafters’ lives.

The Signature Collection features the phrase, “Step into Your Enchanted Garden” and includes JPEG, PNG and PAT files to download as digital supplies for card making and scrapbooking. The art style is whimsical/doodle, and the color scheme for the collection is pastel pinks, blues and greens, along with black and white ink pen drawings.

Storytelling and Fashion with Clara Pluton

    [ad_1]

    Fashion can tell a story.

We wanted to create a platform for some of those stories at the opening of A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes May 10, so we reached out to Seattle storytelling collective she is FIERCE.

One of the performers sharing their story that evening is Clara Pluton. Clara is a Seattle-based comedian and radio personality and is currently the co-host of 104.9 FM KHUH’S radio show/podcast Hot Takes with Hot Dykes.

When describing their performance style, Seattle Weekly said Clara “fills the stage with their own strange universe and speaks with a rhythm of language that is all their own.”

Learn a little more about Clara in our interview below, and join us at the opening party for A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes May 10.

    Interview with Clara Pluton

What attracts you to storytelling as a medium?

When you come from a marginalized group, storytelling is one of the only ways to reclaim your personal narrative and make it yours. I love storytelling and stand-up comedy because it’s taught me how to best be myself.

What artists are inspiring your work currently?

Every poncho that Carrie wears in Sex and The City, teen drag queens, and Britney Spears.

Explorer archetype in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

Explorer section of A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes is themed around six archetypes: Thespian, Mother Earth, Explorer, Enchantress, Sage, and Heroine. Which archetype do you most identify with and why?

I’m a Sagittarius so Explorer obviously. There’s no existential qualm that a brisk walk and a bus ride can’t fix.

The exhibition tells the story of these archetypes through fashion. What’s one thing you feel fashion does well? How would you like to see fashion evolve in the future?

Fashion can be anything we need it to be. Fashion is an extension of how see ourselves and how we wish to see ourselves. We can manifest through its limitless opportunities. What fashion does well is [also] what it represents in its most exalted form: community through aesthetics, transcending vanity into expression, a future made by the individual.

I want to see fashion to continue to evolve back into the hands of the true trendsetters: QTPOC. No more appropriation!

Seattle comedian and storyteller Clara Pulton

Objects hold stories. Clothing can be used as a form of self-expression and even narrative.

We wanted to realize these ideas around fashion and narrative at the opening party for A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, so we turned to Seattle storytelling collective she is FIERCE.

she is FIERCE: stories from the female and genderqueer perspective is a recurring storytelling event in Seattle where female-identified and genderqueer individuals of all demographics can share stories from their experiences that matter to them.

At the exhibition opening, six performers will perform pieces about the stories that live in their clothes, the way they express themselves through style, and the things they love or reject about fashion.

We were able to speak with some of those performers to learn more about their relationship to storytelling, fashion, and archetype.

Alyssa Yeoman is a comedian, storyteller, podcast host, and actor. She works locally as a producer for Seattle’s Naked Brunch, QTPOC Is Not A Rapper, Unladylike at Comedy Underground, and as the regional director for Don’t Tell Comedy Seattle.

Learn more about Alyssa in our interview below, and make sure to join us for the she is FIERCE performance at the opening party for A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes May 10.

    Interview with Alyssa Yeoman

What attracts you to storytelling as a medium?

To be honest, I feel like storytelling fell into my lap through my work as a comedian. It is a natural fit with who I am as a person outside of performance; I would consider myself highly relational and individualistic. I get a lot of energy through investing in people and learning about them through the experiences they choose to share with me.

Storytelling is so valuable because whether you’re consuming or delivering you often learn that you are not alone. I love the opportunity to share, commiserate, and analyze our unique relationships to ourselves and the world outside of yourself.

Thespian section of A Queen Within: Adored Archetypes

The Thespian archetype in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

What artists are inspiring your work currently?

My biggest inspirations right now are Tierra Whack, Blood Orange, Lizzo, and Khalid. All musicians! But that being said, I think they all have such a unique sound while incorporating radical vulnerability in their work.

I seek out artists that inspire what it means to have emotional fortitude a.k.a. here’s how I feel, why I might be feeling it, and in no way am I running from this or making it someone else’s issue. And regardless of if I feel this way tomorrow, it doesn’t make in invalid. I think that’s hugely important in comedy, which is my primary work. It’s showing you have a backbone and getting to an honesty and reliability that causes a visceral reaction.

Also, all 4 of [these artists] exhibit true fashion sense, less determined by trend and more of this who I am and how I feel comfortable. Tierra Whack’s Whack World specifically moved something in me. The use of visuals and every detail to create such a rich world really had me reflecting on my goal of being a holistic artist. Holistic meaning how do I express my values, individuality, and inspiration all-in-one. Solange is another great example who does that and [is] a fashion god.

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes Mother Earth Archetype

The Mother Earth archetype in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes is themed around six archetypes: Thespian, Mother Earth, Explorer, Enchantress, Sage, and Heroine. Which archetype do you most identify with and why?

Sage for sure! I’ve always been told I’m wiser than my age which is true and was hard earned through life experiences.

Then maybe a hint of heroine as I’m ambitious and deliberate in my day-to-day. This is also very evident with my relationship with fashion. I believe in buying only quality clothing that I absolutely love and taking care of those items. My closet is setup in a way that allows me to never get decision fatigue. Every piece is handpicked with a lot of thought on how it goes with the rest of my wardrobe, how it makes me feel, and how it plays to the things I love the most strong lines, non-pretentious, overall sustainability, and functionality. I love utility and I love purpose in my clothing.

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes Heroine Archetype

The Heroine archetype in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes

The exhibition tells the story of these archetypes through fashion. What’s one thing you feel fashion does well? How would you like to see fashion evolve in the future?

The trend I’m loving in fashion right now is the uptick of gender-neutral clothing. I grew up wearing clothes that were not for female presenting but made me feel confident cause I love clothing that doesn’t put an emphasis on my naturally feminine body. I love seeing big companies create clothes anyone can wear and it not be about the binary. It shows what fashion is truly supposed to be about which is freedom of expression.

In the future, I hope more high-end fashion companies show a variety of body types I think they are starting as a reactionary response, but I want it to be truly normalized. All bodies deserve to feel good and look good. And fashion companies don’t deserve a pat on the back for doing the bare minimum MAKE YOUR BRAND ACCESSIBLE.

Thanks to Alyssa for speaking with us. You can see Alyssa perform at the A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes opening party with she is FIERCE May 10.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 25, 2019

LakePoint Sports, the nation’s premier youth travel sports destination located in the Metro Atlanta area, announced today it has named Mark O’Brien as its new president and CEO. O’Brien, who recently served as president of Mizuno USA and chairman of Mizuno Canada, brings a wealth of sports and brand experience to his new role.

“Mark has a robust background with deep experience in sports, marketing, retail and customer satisfaction while leading organizations,” said Jeff Bemis of Rimrock Capital Management, the owner of LakePoint. “He has a special expertise in helping set brands up for lasting success, as well as an ethos that aligns with our vision and values. We can’t think of a better person to help usher LakePoint into this exciting new era, and I look forward to working with him to solidify LakePoint’s position as the ultimate authority in youth travel sports.”

O’Brien has more than two decades of executive leadership for some of the most recognizable brands in the world, including Mizuno USA and Mizuno Canada, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, The Original Honey Baked Ham Company, Johnsonville Sausage and Miller Brewing Company (now MillerCoors). His career has been defined by employing a thoughtful, purposeful approach to transforming and revitalizing mature, rapid-growth organizations, turning them into high-performing, established brands that are viewed as leaders in their respective industries.

O’Brien boasts a diverse array of experience in the sports industry, including several years in minor league baseball that culminated in a role as general manager. He also worked in sports marketing and branding for the NBA’s Houston Rockets, assisting with the franchise’s brand partnerships. During his time with GMR Marketing, his work focused on customer engagement and experiential marketing for one of the top global sports entertainment and experiential marketing agencies.

“LakePoint is truly unlike any other youth sports campus in the country – an impressive and impactful experience that stands above the rest,” said O’Brien. “I’ve always had a passion for sports and for supporting kids with ambition and drive as they work toward their goals on and off the field. I am thrilled to join LakePoint and intend to ensure that, through its continued excellence and outstanding service delivery, it is a destination for young athletes to live out their dreams for decades to come.”

O’Brien joins LakePoint at an exciting time in the life of the organization as it recently announced a joint venture with Prep Baseball Report (PBR) in late 2018. PBR operates hundreds of amateur baseball events in 41 states and Canada and runs the country’s largest and most respected independent baseball scouting service. PBR will hold events for some of the nation’s top youth talent at LakePoint’s state-of-the-art baseball facilities, which include eight Major League-sized fields.

With O’Brien at the helm, LakePoint will continue to integrate into other sports verticals, leveraging its operational expertise, brand relationships, owned real estate and extensive capital resources.

“We were very intentional and strategic throughout this search as we sought to find a leader who could combine the visionary leadership needed to take LakePoint to the next level while also providing the broad depth of experience in operations and marketing to lead this enterprise,” said Bemis. “Everything we were seeking kept leading us back to Mark. His experience with professional sports properties, Mizuno and the Boys and Girls Club of America gives him an invaluable perspective that will only enhance LakePoint’s status as the preeminent youth sports destination in the country.”

LakePoint is coming off one of its most successful years to date. In 2018, it hosted more than 1.25 million visitor days at its nationally recognized sports complex and generated nearly $100 million in economic activity for the region. Last year, LakePoint saw nearly $8 million invested into the complex by Rimrock Capital, leading to 10 percent overall growth and the commencement of a $29 million road-bridge project for future development.

LakePoint hosted a variety of premier sports events in 2018, including the Georgia Special Olympics Winter Games, USA Cheer camp, the Harlem Globetrotters training camp and national championship tournaments hosted by Adidas, Nike and Under Armour and will do so again in 2019. The 2019 calendar is filled with a wide variety of sporting events and activities. Every weekend from January through mid-September, the Indoor Pavilion is currently under contract with regional and national basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and cheerleading events.

New Warhol Print Market Index Reveals That Warhol Prints Outperform the Dow Jones

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 25, 2019

Revolver Gallery has released its premier Andy Warhol Prints and Multiples market report. The report synthesizes publicly available art market data with Revolver Gallery’s internal transactional data and industry expertise, as the largest buyer and seller of Warhol prints in the world. The result provides a nuanced, analytical understanding of the Andy Warhol print market, with a focus on both its drivers and its performance—past, present, and future.

Included in the report is the Warhol Print Market Index, which compares the performance of Warhols to that of the overall market for the past two decades. “The Warhol Print Market Index shows steady long-term growth, outperforming other major financial indices,” says Ron Rivlin, the owner of Revolver Gallery. “As Warhol’s popularity grows among younger collectors, the market shows signs of strengthening and accelerated growth not seen since 2007.” Mr. Rivlin cites the critically acclaimed retrospective exhibition at The Whitney, the Andy Warhol Foundation’s effort to keep Warhol’s name relevant, and overall market confidence as the key factors behind the continued growth in the Warhol print market.

The findings in the report provide original insights and help guide crucial decisions in the buying and selling of Warhol’s work. Novice and experienced investors and collectors will find all the information they need to proficiently navigate the Warhol print market in the coming year. Other highlights in the 2019 Andy Warhol Market Report include:

    • How the Warhol print market achieved a 30% return in 2018.
    • A precise estimate of the number of Warhol prints produced—and why the number in existence is declining.
    • The six variables that determine the pricing for a Warhol print in the current market.
    • A comprehensive overview of the demand drivers behind the Warhol print market.
    • The top 40 outperforming Warhol prints of 2018.
    • Why investors are turning to Warhols as an alternative investment vehicle.

New Jersey Schools and Non-Profit Educational Organizations to Compete in Video Contest

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 26, 2019

On Earth Day 2019, Pfister Energy officially announced the “Get Smart. Go Green” video contest which aims to find the most deserving accredited New Jersey (K-12) public or private school or non-profit educational organization that illustrates the understanding of renewable energy and the need to “go green” for a chance to win a Smartflower™ Solar System. This unique, blooming standalone solar system is 40 percent more efficient than standard solar panels. It is a highly visible symbol for “clean energy” and is ideal for demonstrating a commitment to combating climate change.

Earth Day evokes awareness for all to support advancing renewable energy technologies. Teachers, staff and students are encouraged to take action, inspire others and be part of a solution that promotes environmental literacy, year-round, for their school.

Pfister Energy’s President Wayne Pfisterer states, “Our future depends on educating new generations about renewable energy and sustainable environmental challenges. In addition, this will prepare them to help fill a wide range of jobs and opportunities in the renewable energy sector. By implementing renewable energy, particularly solar as well as storage, New Jersey schools will be less reliant on fossil fuels and kids will be able to see how this solar system operates, real time, in their own schoolyard.”

New Jersey Schools continue to lead the way in the application of solar energy. Based on a New Jersey schools study done by The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), there are approximately 500 (K-12) New Jersey schools with solar. According to New Jersey’s Department of Education, there are over 2,516 (K-12) private and public schools in New Jersey, thus, creating a tremendous untapped potential among the majority of schools in New Jersey still without solar.

“A typical green school in New Jersey, powered by solar, can save hundreds of thousands of dollars over a 20-year life expectancy. By implementing energy-saving solutions in addition to solar, schools free up monies to purchase supplies, reinstate a cut program, prevent layoffs – the sky’s the limit. Our goal for sponsoring the Get Smart. Go Green contest is to help educational institutions reduce operational costs, learn about solar and improve community sustainability.”

Pfister Energy will maintain a website devoted to the contest, www.pfisterenergy.com/getsmartgogreen/, displaying a gallery of participants’ sustainability stories and featuring across other public media outlets for viewing, sharing and voting. Final determination of the winning video will be made by the sponsor.

The Get Smart. Go Green contest begins April 29, 2019, and goes through June 17, 2019. The winner will be announced after the solar system installation on Sept. 16, 2019.

    About Pfister Energy:

Possessing over 25 years of experience, Pfister Energy is respected for its ability to design and build large-scale, complex solar projects as well as offering energy efficiency and energy management solutions. As a total solutions provider offering design, procurement, installation, commissioning, maintenance and financing, clients not only receive best-in-class, cost-effective and tailored energy solutions but will be contributing to a cleaner and sustainable future environment. Pfister Energy is a Smartflower certified technician and will provide complete delivery and installation.

    About Smartflower:

Smartflower, the world’s first all-in-one solar electric system, with its award-winning design, has debuted in the North American market after a very successful launch in Europe. Inspired by nature’s sunflower, Smartflower automatically fans out its solar panels at sunrise to face the sun at a 90-degree angle throughout the day, closing up as the sun sets. The optimization of the solar panels’ positioning is effected through GPS-based dual-axis tracking, maximizing the solar energy yield.
