Redmond, Ore – A balloon launched in memory of a teen killed by a drunk driver is recovered 24-hours later hundreds of miles away, at an Oregon airport.
The star-shaped pink mylar balloon was discovered Sunday night at Redmond’s Roberts Field. “Our operations team does regular inspections of the airfield and removes any debris, and they found this balloon on the taxiway safety area,” says the airport’s Jodi Low.

The balloon included a handwritten note, “It says ‘if you find this balloon, please go to #JusticeForJaycee on Facebook and let us know where it landed.’” It also mentions being launched from Garberville, California, which is 432 miles from Redmond, Oregon. “And it says that it left there at 8:30 p.m. on the 8th of November,” says Low.
On the other side of the balloon, a note with the reason why, “Jaycee Lynn Willet, age 15, was killed by a drunk driver. Please think before you drink. We release balloons every year on 11/08 to remember Jaycee and to spread the message do not drive drunk.” The drunk driver responsible for Jaycee’s 2019 death is in prison for vehicular manslaughter.
Low says the airport called Jaycee’s family to tell them the balloon is safe. “We are exploring what we’re going to do with the balloon,” she tells KXL News, “Either some sort of digital display or some sort of framed display. We haven’t determined what the best way is to continue passing along this message.”
