(Media News) Washington Post Declines to Endorse 2024 Presidential Candidate, Citing Independence

[ad_1]

The Washington Post announced it will not endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election, marking a shift after 36 years of endorsements. Publisher William Lewis stated that this decision reflects the newspaper’s commitment to providing “nonpartisan news” and independent journalism to help readers make their own choices. “Our job…is to be independent,” Lewis wrote, emphasizing that the Post’s focus will be on delivering unbiased news rather than supporting specific candidates.

The Post’s stance follows a similar move by the Los Angeles Times, which also chose not to endorse a candidate this election cycle. The LA Times decision led to several top editors resigning in protest. While abstaining from presidential endorsements, the Post has endorsed candidates in other races, such as Democrat Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland’s Senate race.

The Washington Post, owned by Jeff Bezos, has faced recent internal challenges; Lewis, appointed publisher earlier this year, encountered backlash over past controversies tied to conservative tabloids in the UK.
