  • Editorial: Vote no on Santa Clara County Measure A sales tax increase

    [ad_1]

The Medicaid cuts in President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” will squeeze Santa Clara County health care funding. But raising local taxes is not the solution.

Instead, county supervisors should stem their rapidly escalating spending, which has doubled in the past eight years and ranks highest per capita by far of the 10 largest California counties.

And voters should reject Measure A, the five-year sales tax increase on the Nov. 4 special election ballot that has been in the planning stages since long before Trump won reelection.

The measure would add another five-eighths of a cent to each dollar of taxable goods, pushing the total rate to 10% or more in most of the county.

State data indicates that the average person in the county currently pays at least $1,700 a year in sales tax, which is distributed between state and local governments. Measure A would increase that by at least $113 annually.

  • It May Be Just a Formality, But Harris County Political Parties Are Backing Houston ISD Trustee Candidates

    [ad_1]

Regardless of who is elected to the Houston ISD board of trustees in November, they won’t have any power — but both major political parties are endorsing candidates in the nonpartisan race, with the Harris County Democratic Party doing so for the first time ever.

Due to a 2023 state takeover, HISD’s governing authority is a board of managers appointed by the Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath. The elected panel doesn’t have a vote and can’t sit in on executive sessions.

Nonetheless, officials with Harris County’s GOP and Democratic Party are making sure voters know which candidates espouse their party’s values when they go to the polls on November 4. The endorsements carry some weight but don’t guarantee victory, according to a Republican Party precinct chair, but the bigger picture is that it appears the religious right and the progressive left are attempting to take over all levels of government, starting at the most local races, where they say it matters most.

The Harris County Democratic Party’s picks for HISD include Felicity Pereyra (District 1), Maria Benzon (District 5), Michael McDonough (District 6), Dr. Audrey Nath (District 7), and Myrna Guidry (District 9).

The candidates “share a commitment to strong public schools, equity in education, and the democratic values that empower Houston families,” said Democratic Party Chair Mike Doyle.

“At this point, unfortunately, the Trumpsters have turned school districts into an ideological playground and parents, teachers, and families are in a position where, unless they have the most qualified folks identified, they’re not necessarily going to know who [to vote for], so we felt an important need to speak out,” he said.

Doyle acknowledged that HISD’s “puppet” board of managers has the authority, but said the elected trustees have oversight responsibility.

“At this point, because of folks basically trying to kill public schools in favor of vouchers, with the takeover, they don’t have the authority to do what they need to do to protect,” he said. “They’re basically just oversight, calling out the worst abuses, so they’re important positions for that.”

“I think local races are important to every family in Harris County and they have become the place where the worst of the worst in many ways have started to get involved in destroying education,” he added. “It’s reached the point where we’ve got to make sure that folks understand who the ones are who are not the crackpots.”

The Democratic values espoused by the endorsed slate, according to Doyle, include fully funding and supporting public education, properly paying teachers, and “not just trying to destroy the system in favor of billionaires pushing vouchers for profit.”

“I think endorsements matter in a school district that is predominantly Democrat-voting,” he said. “I think it matters because it gives voters a really strong guidepost for who the most effective, willing-to-fight-the-takeover candidates are.”

The Harris County Republican Party endorsed two Houston ISD candidates, Bridget Wade for District 7 and Robbie McDonough for District 5. Harris County GOP Party Chair Cindy Siegel said the party began endorsing school board candidates in 2021 and takes credit for flipping three school boards to a Republican majority.

“I thought having conservative representation on school boards and city councils — local government — was important because that impacts your life more than what goes on in Austin or D.C.,” said Siegel, a former mayor of Bellaire. “Our process has been fine-tuned and sometimes we’ve done a really great job and other times we’ve learned from it. We continue to try to refine the process.”

Siegel said the process is fair and transparent, and candidates are fully vetted through interviews and a series of public forums. If precinct chairs don’t like the bylaws, they’re welcome to submit a resolution to change them, she said.

“We have, more often than not, gotten it right,” she said. “Our job, as party officers, is to try to get Republicans elected, to make your case, whether you’re knocking on doors or talking to friends. Instead of making their case and participating, my frustration was that I felt like some of [the precinct chairs] were like, it’s not going the way I want it to, so I’m going to take my toys and go down the road.”

  • Beyoncé Officially Endorses Kamala Harris at Houston Hometown Rally: “It’s Time to Sing a New Song!”

Beyoncé Officially Endorses Kamala Harris at Houston Hometown Rally: “It’s Time to Sing a New Song!”

    [ad_1]

“It’s time to sing a new song, a song that began 248 years ago,” she continued later. “The old notes—of downfall, discord, despair—no longer resonate. Our generations of loved ones before us are whispering a prophecy, a quest, a calling, an anthem. Our moment right now—it’s time for America to sing a new song. Our voices sing a chorus of unity. They sing a song of dignity and opportunity.”

As usual, Harris entered the stage to the sound of Beyoncé’s “Freedom.” This time, she was greeted by Queen Bey herself along with her blaring song. Harris hugged Rowland and then Beyoncé, then took the podium to stump in a state with some of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws.

Until Friday, Beyoncé herself had kept mum on her choice of candidate. Rumors of a performance by Queen Bey on the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention back in August turned out to be greatly exaggerated, but, months later, in the final days before voters head to the polls, it came to fruition in Bey’s hometown.

The singer endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket back in the 2020 election, and in 2016, headlined a performance with her husband, Jay-Z, in support of Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid. Audiences have long waited for Beyoncé to speak out officially, though she’s signaled her support in other ways.

According to Billboard, the singer’s label sent a cease and desist letter to Donald Trump’s campaign earlier in the election cycle, telling the Republican candidate to remove a video using “Freedom.”

The singer’s endorsement is more than just symbolic—her stamp of approval could actually sway voters. A recent poll conducted by Newsweek found that some 40% of surveyed Gen Z voters said that they were “more likely” or “significantly more likely” to vote for a candidate who had earned Beyoncé’s endorsement.

Bey joins other powerhouse musical acts such as Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Bruce Springsteen, and more by voicing her support for Harris.

  • (Media News) Washington Post Declines to Endorse 2024 Presidential Candidate, Citing Independence

(Media News) Washington Post Declines to Endorse 2024 Presidential Candidate, Citing Independence

    [ad_1]

The Washington Post announced it will not endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election, marking a shift after 36 years of endorsements. Publisher William Lewis stated that this decision reflects the newspaper’s commitment to providing “nonpartisan news” and independent journalism to help readers make their own choices. “Our job…is to be independent,” Lewis wrote, emphasizing that the Post’s focus will be on delivering unbiased news rather than supporting specific candidates.

The Post’s stance follows a similar move by the Los Angeles Times, which also chose not to endorse a candidate this election cycle. The LA Times decision led to several top editors resigning in protest. While abstaining from presidential endorsements, the Post has endorsed candidates in other races, such as Democrat Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland’s Senate race.

The Washington Post, owned by Jeff Bezos, has faced recent internal challenges; Lewis, appointed publisher earlier this year, encountered backlash over past controversies tied to conservative tabloids in the UK.

  • Dave Portnoy Showed Everyone What a Taylor Swift Thank-You Note Looks Like, Including Her Stationery

Dave Portnoy Showed Everyone What a Taylor Swift Thank-You Note Looks Like, Including Her Stationery

    [ad_1]

It comes as no surprise that when Taylor Swift passes notes, they’re on custom stationery with a bespoke wax “13” seal. What is surprising is that the recipient of a handwritten note on that “from the desk of Taylor Swift” cardstock was Dave Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder who is known for being a Swiftie—and a supporter of Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential aspirations.

Portnoy, who attended the second show of Swift’s Miami leg of her Eras Tour Saturday night wearing his special sparkly jacket, shared that Swift’s younger brother, Austin Swift, hand-delivered the note to him in the VIP tent at the show, and that he shared a nice hug with Swift’s mom, Andrea Swift. The note (with its footer that describes Swift as a “songwriter/feline enthusiast,” by the way) thanked Portnoy for his longtime support, and hinted at some of the blowback she’s gotten since endorsing Kamala Harris for president.

“Dave, I’m so happy to have you at the show tonight!” Swift wrote. “I wanted to say thank you for always being so supportive, so loyal, and for having my back when a lot of people didn’t. I hope you have a blast tonight!! Love, Taylor”

Back in September, speculation about whether Swift would share her choice of candidate was at a high. Portnoy, a self-proclaimed Swiftie, was asked about it.

“I’ll never criticize someone for talking about politics,” he said in an interview on Fox News ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump, on whether he thought Swift would make an endorsement. As we know now, it was shortly after that debate ended that Swift released her statement voicing her support for Harris. “I don’t see the upside for her, but to each their own,” Portnoy said of whether Swift would speak out on the election. He also disclosed then that, “Yeah, I’m voting for Trump. I don’t know that I’d call myself a Trump guy.”

Whatever he’d call himself, he’s outspoken: As recently as last week, Portnoy posted a video of a six-minute-long rant about Harris.

“It’s the gaslighting that the left is doing with Kamala Harris, making it sound like she’s some great, groundbreaking candidate,” he said in part. “She is the worst candidate to ever run for president ever.”

However, the morning after Swift released her own endorsement, Portnoy stood up for her on social media. “As the king of the Swifties people are asking me what I think of her Kamala endorsement,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I don’t care at all. People can vote for whoever they want in this country. How somebody votes will never change my opinion of a person. I’m voting the other way but to each their own.”

Flavor Flav took issue with that “king of the Swifties” title, but Swift apparently appreciated the cross-aisle gesture, and thanked him for it this weekend.

  • Patriotic Millionaires Endorse Conor O’Callaghan Among New Tax and Wage Champions

Patriotic Millionaires Endorse Conor O’Callaghan Among New Tax and Wage Champions

    [ad_1]

Today, the Patriotic Millionaires announced three new endorsements of candidates for the United States House of Representatives. The organization limited its criteria to non-incumbent tax and wage champions running in particularly competitive House districts. Among the candidates included was Conor O’Callaghan, Democratic candidate in AZ-01.

In a release, Patriotic Millionaires said: These leaders come from a range of personal and professional backgrounds and include a veteran, small business owners and nonprofit leaders, an attorney, and a financial services professional. They are committed to fighting against the spiraling economic inequality threatening our democracy, lifting up America’s workers, and building a better, more equitable tax code. The Patriotic Millionaires offer their full and enthusiastic support for both their primary and general election campaigns.

Economic inequality has reached levels not seen since the Gilded Age; workers’ wages have stagnated and declined in real terms, and billionaires are buying policy outcomes in Congress. These three candidates understand the critical moment we are in, and the dire consequences of failing to raise wages, tax wealth, and defend our institutions from the corrupting influence of money. These candidates will especially play an important role in next year’s fight over the expiring provisions of the 2017 Republican Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Announcing these endorsements, Erica Payne, President and Founder of the Patriotic Millionaires, said,

“We need economic champions in Congress next year who are committed to reforming a tax code that gives absurd breaks to the rich and leaves everyday Americans holding the bag. In 2018, after Republicans rewrote the tax code, for the first time in history, billionaires paid a lower effective tax rate than every other income group in the country. That’s both immoral and economically unsustainable.

“Donald Trump is now selling even more tax cuts for billionaires in exchange for campaign contributions. The current tax code is a key driver of the destabilizing level of inequality that has brought our nation to the edge of social chaos. It must be fixed.

“These candidates will advocate fervently on behalf of working people against the interests of the ultra-rich and corporate America. They have demonstrated their commitment to unrigging the tax code and building an economy that works for all working people in this great country. We are eager to see them continue the fight in Washington.”

Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., said,

“There is a reason why laws like the 2017 Trump tax cuts overwhelmingly benefit the interests of the ultra-rich: wealthy Americans like me can invest in campaigns and lobby efforts which essentially compel politicians to do whatever we want them to do. People should be able to donate to candidates and causes that they care about, but there’s no reason why millionaires like me should have a hugely disproportionate say in who runs for office and who wins elections.

“I am confident that the candidates endorsed by the Patriotic Millionaires will work tirelessly to meet the needs of their constituents, and not just wealthy donors like me. The first step in getting big money out of politics involves electing people who are committed to changing our broken system, and we believe these candidates fit the bill.”

  • Donald Trump’s “BLM” endorsement draws loud applause from supporters

Donald Trump’s “BLM” endorsement draws loud applause from supporters

    [ad_1]

Former President Donald Trump drew cheers at a rally on Saturday after touting his endorsement from a “representative of Black Lives Matter” (BLM), despite the activist’s disputed affiliation within the decentralized movement.

Trump is currently among the packed field of candidates seeking the GOP nomination for president in 2024. In nationwide polling averages, he has consistently led the crop of candidates by significant margins, regularly garnering around 50 percent support from likely Republican voters, leading many to consider his nomination by the party next year inevitable.

Earlier this week, activist Mark Fisher appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss his endorsement of Trump, with the show touting him as a “BLM leader.” During his appearance, Fisher claimed that Trump has done “more for the Black community than any president I can think of in my lifetime” and decried the Democratic Party as “racist.”

BLM is a decentralized social movement focused on racism and other issues faced by Black Americans that has been more often associated with progressive politics, rather than the socially conservative policies embraced by Trump. While decentralized, the movement is represented by various prominent organizations at the national and state level, many of which have dismissed Fisher’s involvement with them and called his endorsement a “publicity stunt.”

Black Lives Matter of Rhode Island, which Fisher has touted his involvement in, told Newsweek in a prior statement that he was “no longer associated” with the group. Fisher is also the founder of an organization in Maryland called “BLM Inc.”

On Saturday, Trump spoke at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he touted Fisher’s endorsement, drawing cheers from the crowd of supporters.

“Did you see where a very respected representative of Black Lives Matter, new England?” Trump asked. “New England endorsed Trump, he said. He didn’t necessarily say the Republican Party, he said Trump because what we have done in terms of opportunity zones, and jobs and jobs, historically, if you look at the black colleges and universities, 10 year funding.”

Newsweek reached out to the national arm of Black Lives Matter via email for comment.

In a joint statement to The Providence Journal, BLM Rhode Island and the BLM Rhode Island Political Action Committee denounced Fisher as an “imposter.”

“This is a publicity stunt,” the statement read. “The right-wing continues to use and amplify fringe Black voices to create an idea of broad support for their corrupt candidates.”

It added: “Continuing to call Mark Fisher a Black Lives Matter leader is disingenuous and inappropriate. Both the founder of BLM Rhode Island and BLM Rhode Island PAC have denounced Mark and have made it clear that he is an imposter.”
