  • Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’ star, dies at 53

    [ad_1]

Dane died nearly a year after announcing his ALS diagnosis.

WASHINGTON — Actor Eric Dane, known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” has died less than a year after announcing his ALS diagnosis. He was 53 years old.

His representatives said Dane died Thursday from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known also as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” said a statement that requested privacy for his family. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”

Dane was known for his “Grey’s Anatomy” role as Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, the role of Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria” and the lead role in Max’s “The Last Ship.”

He was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025. He told People at the time, “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

Dane was born on Nov. 9, 1972, and raised in California. His father, a Navy man, died of a gunshot wound when he was 7. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles to purse acting, landing guest roles on shows like “Saved by the Bell,” “Married … With Children,” “Charmed” and “X-Men: the Last Stand,” and one season of the short-lived medical drama “Gideon’s Crossing.”

His big break arrived in the mid-2000s, when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, a.k.a. McSteamy, on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” a role he would play from 2006 until 2012 and reprise in 2021. In 2019, he did a complete 180 and became Cal Jacobs, a troubled married man, in HBO’s provocative drama, “Euphoria,” a role he continued in up until his death.

Dane also starred as Tom Chandler, the captain of a U.S. Navy destroyer at sea after a global catastrophe wiped out most of the world’s population, in the TNT drama “The Last Ship.” In 2017, production was halted as Dane battled depression.

Dane is survived by his wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teen daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. Gayheart and Dane wed in 2004 and separated in September 2017. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, but later filed to dismiss the petition. In a December essay for New York magazine’s The Cut reflecting on Dane’s diagnosis, Gayheart called their dynamic “a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people.” She said they never got a divorce, but dated other people and lived separately.

ALS is a disease with no cure that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to the Mayo Clinic. ALS causes loss of muscle control and gets worse with time. When voluntary muscle action is impacted, “people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe,” according to the ALS Association

Its exact cause is still not known and anyone at any age can be diagnosed with ALS.

Other notable people who have been diagnosed with ALS include Stephen Hawking, American professional baseball player Lou Gehrig, American football player Eric Stevens, musician Roberta Cleopatra Flack and more.

NorCal forecast: Freeze Warning Thursday night as the weather dries out

A few days of dry weather will give crews in in the mountains some much-needed time to plow and restore power.

ALL RIGHT. NOW TO KCRA 3 WEATHER. IT IS AN IMPACT DAY. BUT LOOK AT THIS. A LIVE LOOK FROM STOCKTON. WE DO HAVE SOME BLUE SKY OUT THERE, ALTHOUGH WE STILL HAVE THE CLOUDS. LET’S GET OVER TO DIRK WITH OUR FORECAST. YEAH, THE BIGGEST IMPACT TODAY HAS BEEN IN THE MOUNTAINS. WE HAVE HAD SOME SHOWERS, WE’VE HAD SOME HAIL AND SOME PRETTY HEAVY DOWNPOURS. BUT THE SIERRA, THAT’S WHERE WE CONTINUE TO SEE A PRETTY GOOD AMOUNT OF SNOW STILL FALLING. NOW WE ARE SEEING SOME SIGNS OF IT BREAKING A BIT AND THAT’S GOOD. LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK HERE. BETWEEN HIGHWAY 50 AND I-80. THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE SOME OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW FALLING RIGHT NOW IN PLUMAS COUNTY AND EL DORADO COUNTIES, AND I-80, WHERE WE’VE BEEN SEEING A LITTLE BIT OF A BREAK. ACTUALLY, THE SNOW PLOWS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KIND OF CATCH UP A LITTLE BIT. YOU CAN START SEEING SOME OF THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD HERE FROM THE DONNER SUMMIT SKY CAMERA THAT IS ICE ENCRUSTED WITH SOME OF THOSE SNOWFLAKES. GOT A LITTLE BIT OF A WINDOW TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE ACTUAL I-80 DONNER SUMMIT AREA, BUT TEMPERATURE CURRENTLY 18 DEGREES WITH WIND GUSTS UP TO 16MPH. SO LET’S GO AHEAD AND TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE RAIN HITTING THESE SPOTS WHERE THERE’S THESE LITTLE HEAVY DOWNPOURS, THESE LITTLE CELLS THAT ARE POPPING UP. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING HAIL THAT’S BEEN FORMING. AND SO THOSE ARE SPOTS THAT’S BEEN COLD ENOUGH TO WHERE WE’RE SEEING HAIL HAS HAD SEVERAL REPORTS OF HAIL. AND THOSE ARE THE MOST LIKELY SPOTS HERE ALONG HIGHWAY 108. WE’RE SEEING SOME. AND THAT’S GOING TO BE PUSHING IN AND TURNING INTO SOME SNOW AS IT MAKES ITS WAY UP INTO THE FOOTHILLS, UP ABOVE 1500 FEET. ALSO, JUST TO THE SOUTH OF IONE. YOU’RE KIND OF COMING OUT OF THIS AREA OF RAIN AS THIS IS MOVING A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THE SOUTH TOWARDS SAN ANDREAS. IN JACKSON, YOU’VE BEEN SEEING SOME OF THAT RAIN. WE HAVE SOME RAIN NEAR CAMERON PARK CURRENTLY, AND AUBURN, WHICH EARLIER HAD SOME SNOW, IS NOW GETTING SOME LIGHT RAIN. SO SNOW THAT’S LAKE TAHOE SOUTH LAKE TAHOE PICTURE HERE SHOWING THE AREA BLANKETED WITH SOME FRESH SNOW. CURRENT TEMPERATURE AND TRUCKEE IS 25 DEGREES MODESTO 5154 IN STOCKTON AND 51 DEGREES CURRENTLY IN SACRAMENTO. SO ONCE WE GOT RID OF THE RAIN AND THINGS ARE DRYING OUT TEMPERATURES, THEY REBOUNDED A LITTLE BIT. EVEN WITH THAT COLD AIR THAT’S BRINGING OUT THOSE LOW SNOW LEVELS, CURRENT WINDS. WE HAVE WINDS 21MPH IN STOCKTON. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING SOME OF THE STRONGEST WINDS RIGHT NOW. 17 MILE AN HOUR WINDS IN FAIRFIELD, SAN FRANCISCO BEATS THEM ALL WITH A WIND COMING FROM THE WEST NORTHWEST AT 32MPH. SO WE HAVE THIS POCKET OF COLD AIR. IT’S MOVED IN AND WE’VE SEEN THE LOW SNOW LEVELS. AND THIS IS GOING TO MAKE FOR A COLD NIGHT TONIGHT, ESPECIALLY AREAS WHERE WE SEE THE CLOUD COVER STARTING TO CLEAR OUT. THAT’S JUST OPENING THE DOOR, ALLOWING THAT COLD AIR TO JUST SIT IN PLACE. ALTHOUGH ANY WARMTH IS GOING TO ESCAPE. AND WE’RE LOOKING AT A FREEZE WARNING THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT UNTIL 9:00 TOMORROW MORNING WITH SUBFREEZING TEMPERATURES. BUT NOT EVERY PLACE IS GOING TO BE THE SAME. WE’RE LOOKING AT THE NORTH END OF THE VALLEY, STRETCHING ALL THE WAY UP INTO SHASTA COUNTY. THIS IS WHERE THE COLDEST AIR IS GOING TO BE. ANYWHERE FROM 23 TO 28 DEGREES. AND THEN YOU GET MORE TOWARDS SACRAMENTO AND ON INTO SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY. AND THAT’S WHERE WE’RE EXPECTING TEMPERATURES TO RANGE MORE 29 TO 34 DEGREES. BUT STILL, THOSE ARE SOME PRETTY COLD TEMPERATURES FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE PLANTS OR ANYTHING THAT COULD BE AFFECTED BY THAT KIND OF COLD, TAKE CARE OF IT. TAKE CARE OF THAT BUSINESS SNOW THAT’S GOING TO BE DECREASING OVERNIGHT TONIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW MORNING. WE CAN SEE WE HAVE SOME BREAKS IN THE CLOUD COVER. WE’RE GOING TO SEE WIDESPREAD FROST TOMORROW MORNING BECAUSE OF THE RAIN KIND OF ICY CONDITIONS TO WAKE UP TO IN THE MORNING FRIDAY. AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON, WE WILL SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE THAT WILL BE NICE TO WARM THINGS UP. AND THERE’S ALSO THIS BOUNDARY OUT HERE BRINGING SOME RAIN ALONG THE NORTHERN COAST OF CALIFORNIA. NOW, WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS IS IT’S GOING TO HANG OUT. WE’RE LOOKING AT DRY SATURDAY AS WELL. SO DRY ON FRIDAY, DRY ON SATURDAY. BUT ALONG THE COAST WE HAVE THESE SHOWERS THAT ARE PICKING UP. IT’S EXPECTED TO SWING IN A LITTLE BIT ON SUNDAY. WE COULD SEE SOME OF THESE SHOWERS BASICALLY PARALLEL WITH I-80. AND SO WE’LL SEE THAT FROM SACRAMENTO NORTH ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY. AND THEN THE BETTER CHANCE FOR RAIN ROLLS IN ON TUESDAY. BUT FOR TOMORROW, TEMPERATURES STARTING OFF AROUND FREEZING, THEN DAYTIME HIGHS LOOKING AT MOSTLY MID TO LOW 50S SEVEN DAY FORECAST. GETTING A NICE BREAK FRIDAY SATURDAY AND FOR SOME EVEN SUNDAY AND MONDAY. IT’S REALLY GOING TO BE TUESDAY THAT WE HAVE THE BETTER SHOT FOR RAIN AND THIS IS GOING TO BE WARMER SYSTEM WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING UP. WE’RE LOOKING AT SNOW LEVELS AROUND 7000FT. SO THOSE AREAS THAT HA

NorCal forecast: Freeze Warning Thursday night as the weather dries out

A few days of dry weather will give crews in in the mountains some much-needed time to plow and restore power.

    Updated: 4:42 PM PST Feb 19, 2026

    Editorial Standards

The next few days will be dry in the Valley, Foothills and Sierra.

That will give plow and power crews some much-needed time to clear roads and restore electricity.

Temperatures will plummet Friday morning with many Valley spots at of below freezing at sunrise. Saturday and Sunday will gradually turn milder.

A couple showers can’t be ruled out Sunday and Monday, but most places will stay dry both days.

Rain is likely on Tuesday and the snow level will stay at or even above the Sierra summits.

    Cold Friday morning

A Freeze Warning is in effect Thursday night into Friday morning across the Valley.

Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing in some Valley spots Friday morning. The Foothills may have some icy side streets with temperatures in the 20s. Many Sierra roads will be covered in snow and ice.

    Sierra travel outlook

Snow will stop Thursday night and dry weather is in the forecast Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It will take plow crews a while to remove all of the snow that’s fallen this week, especially on narrow side streets.

Drivers should expect chain controls and long travel times on Friday and maybe Saturday even with dry weather.

    Friday’s high temperatures

Friday afternoon will be dry and chilly with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will be running about 10 degrees cooler than normal.

    Weekend forecast

The weekend will be warmer and mostly dry.

The only chance for a shower comes on Sunday. Areas east of I-5 including the Foothills and Sierra will stay dry while the west side of the Valley could see a few hundredths of an inch of rain.

KCRA 3 weather Impact Day Tuesday

The next round of widespread precipitation is in the forecast for Tuesday. This will be a much warmer storm system and the snow level will likely stay at or even above the Sierra passes.

The KCRA 3 weather team has issued a weather Impact Day for Tuesday because of how rain will affect travel and any outdoor plans.

    Valley 7-day forecast

A few showers are possible Sunday and Monday, but Tuesday is more likely to be wet all day.

Rain will clear for the rest of next week.

  • Police release former Prince Andrew 11 hours after his arrest following misconduct claims

    [ad_1]

The former prince was stripped of his royal title in the fall after his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.

OXFORD, UK — The former Prince Andrew has been released after his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The Thames Valley Police force said the former prince was released Thursday evening. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was photographed in a car leaving the station near his home in eastern England about 11 hours after his arrest.

He was released under investigation, meaning he has neither been charged nor exonerated.

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested early Thursday at his home by detectives investigating his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Police said they had finished searching Mountbatten-Windsor’s home but were still searching another property.

It was the first time in nearly four centuries that a senior British royal was placed under arrest, and it underscored how deference to the monarchy has eroded in recent years.

King Charles III, whose late mother lived by the motto “never complain, never explain,” took the unusual step of issuing a statement on the arrest of his brother.

“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,’’ the king said. “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter.’’

Mountbatten-Windsor, 66, moved to the king’s private estate in Norfolk after he was evicted from his longtime home near Windsor Castle earlier this month.

Police previously said they were “assessing” reports that Mountbatten-Windsor sent trade information to Epstein, a wealthy investor and convicted sex offender, in 2010, when the former prince was Britain’s special envoy for international trade. Correspondence between the two men was released by the U.S. Justice Department late last month along with millions of pages of documents from the American investigation into Epstein.

“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,’’ Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said in a statement.

“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time,” he added.

Police also said they were searching two properties.

Earlier in the day, pictures circulated online that appeared to show unmarked police cars at Wood Farm, Mountbatten-Windsor’s home on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, with plainclothes officers gathering outside.

Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his association with Epstein.

The allegations being investigated Thursday are separate from those made by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked to Britain to have sex with the prince in 2001, when she was just 17. Giuffre died by suicide last year.

Still, Giuffre’s family praised the arrest, saying that their “broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty.”

The family added: “He was never a prince. For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you.”

    A ‘spectacular fall from grace’

“This is the most spectacular fall from grace for a member of the royal family in modern times,” said Craig Prescott, a royal expert at Royal Holloway, University of London, who compared it in severity to the crisis sparked by Edward VIII’s abdication to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

“And it may not be over yet,’’ Prescott added.

Thursday’s arrest came a day after the National Police Chiefs’ Council said it had created a coordination group to assist forces across the U.K. that are assessing whether Epstein and his associates committed crimes in Britain. In addition to the concerns about Mountbatten-Windsor ’s correspondence, documents released by the U.S. suggest Epstein may have used his private jet to traffic women to and from Britain.

The documents also rocked British politics. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had to fight off questions about his judgment after the papers revealed that Peter Mandelson, the man he appointed ambassador to the U.S., had a longer and closer relationship with Epstein than was previously disclosed.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service has said it is investigating allegations of misconduct in public office related to Mandelson’s own correspondence with Epstein. Mandelson was fired as ambassador to the U.S. in September.

But it is Mountbatten-Windsor’s relationship with Epstein that brought the scandal to the doors of Buckingham Palace and threatened to undermine support for the monarchy.

The last time a senior British royal was arrested was almost 400 years ago during the reign of King Charles I that saw a growing power struggle between the crown and Parliament.

After the king attempted to arrest lawmakers in the House of Commons in 1642, hostilities erupted into the English Civil War, which ended with victory for the parliamentary forces of Oliver Cromwell.

Charles I was arrested, tried, convicted of high treason and beheaded in 1649.

Modern concerns about Mountbatten-Windsor’s links to Epstein have dogged the royal family for more than a decade.

The late Queen Elizabeth II forced her second son to give up royal duties and end his charitable work in 2019 after he tried to explain away his friendship with Epstein during a catastrophic interview with the BBC.

But as concern mounted about what the Epstein files might reveal, the king moved aggressively to insulate the royal family from the fallout.

Since October, Charles has stripped his younger brother of the right to be called prince, forced him to move out of the royal estate he occupied for more than 20 years and issued a public statement supporting the women and girls abused by Epstein.

Last week, the palace said it was ready to cooperate with police investigating Mountbatten-Windsor.

Charles was forced to act after Mountbatten-Windsor’s correspondence with Epstein torpedoed the former prince’s claims that he severed ties with the financier after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Instead, emails between the two men show Epstein offering to arrange a date between Mountbatten-Windsor and a young Russian woman in 2010, and the then-prince inviting Epstein to dinner at Buckingham Palace.

Additional correspondence appears to show Mountbatten-Windsor sending Epstein reports from a two-week tour of Southeast Asia that he undertook in 2010 as Britain’s trade envoy.

“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,” the statement said. “We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”

Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in his relationship with Epstein. Last fall, King Charles III stripped Andrew of his royal titles, including the right to be called a prince, as he tried to insulate the monarchy from the continuing revelations about his younger brother’s relationship with Epstein. Those revelations have tarnished the royal family for more than a decade.

Images circulated online appeared to show unmarked police cars at Mountbatten-Windsor’s home, Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, with plainclothes officers appearing to gather outside.

  • Valley wind & rain, Sierra and low elevation snow Thursday before the storm ends

    [ad_1]

The storm is almost over! Thursday sees wind, rain, and heavy snow once again before finally wrapping up in the evening.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One final push of moisture comes in Thursday morning, meaning we’ve got one more day with wet weather conditions forecast for the Sacramento region.

This will be the coldest part of the storm, with heavy rain and strong wind gusts in the valley. In the Sierra, foothills, and upper Sacramento Valley, heavy snow will fall with flurries at the low elevations down towards 1000 ft. A dusting is possible up in Redding as even Shasta and Tehama counties are in the Winter Storm Warning. Interstate 5 travel will be impacted with chain controls.

Continue to avoid Sierra travel. Chain controls will remain through the duration of this storm, and more traffic holds are possible on Thursday. Better driving returns on Friday.

    When

A stronger, final push of moisture arrives Thursday morning. This will be the coldest part of the storm. Snow levels drop back towards 1000 ft on Thursday morning, where a dusting of snow is possible at places like Colfax and Placerville.

In the valley, the heaviest rain we’ve had since Monday with a few thunderstorms are possible through the morning hours.

Wind gusts will accompany the heavy rain. In the valley, gusts are likely to be between 40 and 50 mph on Thursday morning as the center of the system moves inland. It’ll remain gusty in the valley for much of Thursday, but the strongest winds will be in the morning.

Scattered rain and a few thunderstorms are possible into the afternoon for the valley. Snow will continue in the high country into the evening, before it starts to wind down after sunset.

    Impact

Sierra roads will continue to be greatly impacted. Interstate 80 and Highway 50 will be under chain controls all day Thursday, and more traffic holds are likely as another 2 feet of snow is expected at the high passes, with very low snow down to 1000 feet.

We’ll also see snow on Interstate 5 in far Northern California Shasta. A dusting of snow is possible on the valley floor near Redding, with up to 6-10″ of snowfall on I-5 north of Shasta Lake where I-5 elevation ranges from 2000 to 3000 feet.

It’s very unlikely to get even a dusting of snow below 1000 ft in elevation; however, some mixed precip – rain with a few flurries – isn’t entirely out of the question below 1000 ft. Nothing would stick.

Strong valley wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible Thursday morning. These winds could lead to power outages as the ground is already so wet that trees and poles can more easily get blown over.

Rain will cause localized flooding issues in the valley. In other words, widespread flooding is not forecast, but flooding on some roads, in urban areas, and in small creeks and streams is possible.

    Need

Continue to avoid travel in Sierra until the storm passes. There won’t be a good time to travel until Friday, when the snow has stopped. In addition, be mindful of the weather in the Northstate as Interstate 5 will likely have several inches of snow on it from Thursday morning through the afternoon.

In the valley, avoid flooded roads if they occur. Mainly, this is about allowing extra time to get where you’re going due to the rain, and bringing a rain jacket and/or umbrella.

With power outages possible, charge devices! Widespread power outages aren’t likely, but with the strong winds, localized outages are possible.

  • Children of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson honor his legacy as memorial services set for next week

    [ad_1]

Jesse Jackson’s life was defined by *** relentless fight for justice and equality. I was born in Greenville, South Carolina, uh, in rampant radical racial segregation. Had to be taught to go to the back of the bus or be arrested. In 1965, he began working for Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. I learned so much from him, such *** great source of inspiration. Both men were in Memphis in April 1968 to support striking sanitation workers. King and other civil rights leaders were staying at the Lorraine Motel. He said, Jesse, you know, you don’t even have on *** shirt and tie. You don’t even have on *** tie. We’re going to dinner. I said, Doc, you know it does not require *** tie. Just an appetite and we laughed. I said, Doc, and the bullet hit. With King gone, his movement was adrift. Years later, Jackson formed Operation Push, pressuring businesses to open up to black workers and customers and adding more focus on black responsibility, championed in the 1972 concert Watt Stacks. Watts. The Reverend set his sights on the White House in 1984. 1st thought of as *** marginal candidate, Jackson finished third in the primary race with 18% of the vote. He ran again in 1988, doubling his vote count and finishing in 2nd in the Democratic race. At the time, it was the farthest any black candidate had gone in *** presidential contest. But 20 years later when President Barack ran, we were laying the groundwork for that season. In 2017, Jackson had *** new battle to fight, Parkinson’s disease, but it did. It stop him. Late in life, he was still fighting. He was arrested in Washington while demonstrating for voting rights. His silent presence at the trial of Ahmaud Arbery’s killers prompted defense lawyers to ask that he leave the courtroom. Jackson stayed from the Jim Crow South through the turbulent 60s and into the Black Lives Matter movement. Jesse Jackson was *** constant, unyielding voice for justice.

  • Did the US advance to the Winter Olympics semifinals in men’s hockey?

    [ad_1]

Like a shock to the system, hockey at the Olympics has gone from no one being eliminated in group play to a single-elimination knockout round.

MILAN, Italy — The men’s hockey quarterfinals featured a tense matchup between two medal favorites, the United States and Sweden, as the two teams fought for a place in the semifinals.

Team USA, led by Quinn Hughes, beat Sweden 2-1 in overtime.

The United States opened the scoring when Dylan Larkin redirected a shot from the point in the second period. That goal held until just under two minutes remained in the game, when Sweden’s Mika Zibanejad slammed home a shot off a great pass from Lucas Raymond.

Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, setting up 10 minutes of 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime hockey.

The overtime period was filled with “U-S-A” chants from the crowd.

Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in overtime, but no one was able to cash in until a Hughes’ shot clanged off the right post and behind the Swedish goalie.

Sweden had won three of its four games in Milan and was a formidable opponent on Wednesday for the unbeaten second-seeded Americans to begin the single-elimination knockout round. Sweden is the only European team at the Olympics with a full roster of NHL players.

The semifinals are Friday, and the gold medal game is Sunday.

Canada played against Czechia, and won 4-3 in overtime. Canada won gold in both the 2014 and 2010 Olympics with NHL players. This year is the first time since 2014 that the NHL has given the green light for hockey players to attend the Olympics.

Slovakia and Germany faced off earlier Wednesday, with Slovakia securing a spot in the semifinals. Finland and Switzerland also competed in the quarterfinals and Finland won 3-2, also in overtime, advancing to the next stage.

After Wednesday, it is looking more probable that the United States and Canada will face off in the final on Sunday.

Costco is offering refunds for some restaurant gift cards. Here’s why

From the food in your fridge to the appliances in your home to the car in your driveway, recalls touch everyday life, but the warnings don’t always reach us in time. It takes time for the investigators to kind of put the pieces of the puzzle together. Teresa Murray is the consumer watchdog for the US Public Interest Research Group. She walked us through the timeline of *** typical food recall. It can take several weeks between the time that somebody gets sick and goes. To *** medical provider and then the time that the CDC identifies the source and there’s enough information to say, Aha, OK, it’s that particular brand of that particular product. For things like vehicles and consumer products, Murray says it can take months, even years, as regulators and companies negotiate over fixes. The consequences of those delays can be deadly. Last week, the US government released *** warning about *** popular Fisher Price baby. In 2019, Fisher Price recalled its rock and place sleeper after more than 30 infant deaths since its 2009 release. *** House Oversight report found the company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission knew of fatalities and injuries as early as 2012. Since the recall, the CPSC says 70 more deaths have been reported, including eight after the announcement prompting *** re-announcement in 2023. Our recall notifications. I mean this country absolutely stinks, and unfortunately there’s not one single policy solution that would just fix everything. I mean, we all need to do better. So what can you do before you buy anything? Check safeerproducts.gov. That’s the CPSC site where you can file and read complaints. You can search by brand and search by kind of by product. You can say, gosh, there have been like dozens of complaints, and that might give you *** clue. Maybe you should try and look for *** different brand. Register big ticket items, especially baby gear like car seats and strollers, so companies can contact you if *** recall happens. For vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has *** tool on its website that lets you search for recalls associated with your vehicle identification number, otherwise known as VIN. Finally, sign up for recall alerts by visiting this site, recalls.gov. And Murray recommends making recall checks part of your weekly routine. Reporting in Washington, I’m Annie Lou.

  • Dog’s surprise Olympic debut at cross-country ski course results in epic photo finish

    [ad_1]

“We have a visitor. Maybe not a streaker, but we certainly have somebody who wants to be part of the Olympic action,” one of the broadcasters commented.

WASHINGTON — A surprise four-legged competitor became an instant fan-favorite Wednesday at a cross-country ski competition at the Winter Olympics

During qualifications for the women’s team sprint, a dog suddenly appeared toward the end of the course and even raced a couple of skiers to the line.

“We have a visitor. Maybe not a streaker, but we certainly have somebody who wants to be part of the Olympic action,” one of the broadcasters commented.

“The biggest cheer of the day is not for any of the skiers so far,” they added.

The dog, which had a collar around its neck, didn’t seem to impact any of the competitors, and it casually walked off the course after crossing the line. The event’s chief of competition later came over to wrangle the guest.

The broadcasters had a lot of fun with the moment, even showing a slow-motion replay and the photo finish image.

According to NPR, the dog was later identified as two-year-old Nazgul, who was staying with his owner at a nearby bed-and-breakfast. The owner told NPR Nazgul is a “stubborn, but very sweet” Czechoslovakian wolfdog.

    Plus, the puns wrote themselves.

“It’s not a canine calamity,” a broadcaster remarked.

“This is a real photo from the Winter Olympics,” one social media user wrote, alongside the dog’s photo finish image

“It was so fun. I like dogs, we have a dog at home,” said Sweden’s Jonna Sundling, who went on to win gold with teammate Maja Dahlqvist, according to Reuters.

But not all of the skiers were as excited by the new medal hopeful.

“I was cooling down on the bike, and I saw the dog, and I was like, ‘That’s crazy,’” Nadja Kaelin of Switzerland said. “I was just happy I wasn’t skiing next to the dog because I’m a bit afraid of dogs. I was happy I was already at the finish.”

The team event involves eight segments of competition: men’s short program, women’s short program, men’s free skate, women’s free skate, pairs short program, pairs free skate, rhythm dance and free dance.

Ice dancers Chock and Bates finished first in both rhythm and free dance.

Kam and O’Shea competed together in the pairs events, finishing fourth in free skate and fifth in the short program.

Liu and Malinin competed in the short program for women’s and men’s – both earning second place. Glenn placed third in the women’s free skate, and Malinin placed first in the men’s.

    Elizabeth Lemley

Lemley won gold in women’s freestyle moguls skiing and shared a podium with fellow Team USA athlete Jaelin Kauf, who took home silver.

Lemley, 20, is the youngest member of the American mogul team. She is from Vail, Colorado, and scored 82.30 points.

    Jordan Stolz

Stolz didn’t just earn a gold medal at the men’s 1,000 meters competition. He also set a new Olympic record.

The 21-year-old speedskater from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, completed his race in 1:06.28, beating the previous Olympic record time of 1:07.18 set in 2002 — before Stolz was born.

He previously competed in the 2022 Beijing Games.

    Silver medalists

    Ben Ogden

Ogden won silver in the men’s sprint classic, finishing just .87 second behind the gold medalist from Norway. The 25-year-old is from Landgrove, Vermont.

This is the first cross-country skiing medal the U.S. has won in 50 years.

    Alex Hall

The 27-year-old from Salt Lake City, Utah, won a silver medal in the men’s freestyle skiing slopestyle event. Hall was the defending gold medalist, but Norway’s Birk Ruud took that honor this year.

    Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse

Dropkin and Thiesse won the silver medal in mixed doubles curling at the Winter Olympic Games in Italy. It was the first time the U.S. had reached an Olympic curling mixed doubles final.

The pair lost 5-6 to Sweden in what was a narrow match.

Dropkin is from Southborough, Massachusetts, and Thiesse is from Duluth, Minnesota. Both are now based in Duluth and have full-time jobs outside of curling.

    Jaelin Kauf

The 29-year-old took home her second consecutive silver in the women’s freestyle moguls skiing competition on Feb. 11. She also won silver in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Kauf shared the podium with her first-time Olympian teammate Elizabeth Lemley, who won the top slot. Kauf is from Alta, Wyoming, and landed a score of 80.77.

    Ryan Cochran-Siegle

The 33-year-old athlete from Starksboro, Vermont, won his second consecutive silver medal in the men’s super-G event. He finished .13 seconds behind the Swiss athlete who won gold.

Cochran-Siegle is a three-time Olympian. He previously competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics and won his first silver medal in the men’s super-G event in 2022.

    Madison Chock and Evan Bates

The pair took home the silver medal in ice dancing on Wednesday, adding to the gold medal in the team figure skating event they earned earlier in the week. They fell 1.43 points shy of the French gold medalists.

Chock and Bates have been skating together for 15 years and were married in 2024.

    Chloe Kim

Kim — who won gold in the halfpipe in the past two Olympics — is taking home a silver medal this year. The 25-year-old Olympian from California ceded the top spot to a snowboarder from South Korea.

    Bronze medalists

    Jackie Wiles and Paula Moltzan

The pair took home bronze on Feb. 10 at the women’s team combined alpine skiing event.

Moltzan is a Minnesota native who now lives in Vermont. Her first Olympic Games were in 2022.

Wiles is from Aurora, Oregon, and competed in both the 2014 and 2022 Olympics. A serious crash before the 2018 Winter Games prevented her from competing that year.

    Ashley Farquharson

The luge athlete secured bronze in the women’s singles event on Feb. 10. Farquharson is from Park City, Utah. She is just the second woman from Team USA to medal in luge.

She also competed in the 2022 Olympic Games.

    Jessie Diggins

The 34-year-old from Afton, Minnesota, won bronze in the women’s 10-kilometer interval start freestyle event. Diggins finished with a time of 23:38.9, collapsing on the finish line as she crossed. The Swedish silver medalist was about three seconds faster.

This is Diggins’ fourth Olympics, and her fourth medal. She has one gold, one silver and now two bronze medals.
