Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes posted online in the aftermath: “Praying for Kansas City”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said the team was on buses returning to Arrowhead Stadium when a shooting occurred Wednesday at the end of the Super Bowl championship parade.

Burkholder said he was with coach Andy Reid and other coaches and staff members at the time of the shooting.

“Praying for Kansas City,” Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that also included three emojis of hands in prayer.

Offensive tackle Donovan Smith, defensive tackle Mike Pennel and safety Justin Reid were among the Chiefs players offering similar statements of support on social media.

“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s incidents — a huge thank you to the first responders who ran towards the sound of danger,” offensive guard Trey Smith posted on X. “You’re the ones who should be celebrated today.”

The parade was a celebration of the Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers that gave them their second straight Super Bowl title.

“Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act,” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill said in an X post. “Pray that doctors & first responders would have steady hands & that all would experience full healing.”

  • Rhiannon Giddens is a North Carolina treasure whose accomplishments go far beyond Beyoncé feature

Rhiannon Giddens is a North Carolina treasure whose accomplishments go far beyond Beyoncé feature

    [ad_1]

    By Cameron Lee

    February 14, 2024

North Carolina’s own Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens is featured on Beyoncé’s new single, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM.” The Greensboro native and MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” recipient (2017), revealed the news through social media.

I woke up yesterday morning to new music from Beyoncé, featuring none other than my banjo and viola playing throughout. On the heels of her Super Bowl commercial album announcement, her single “Texas Hold ‘Em” is the first off her new country record, #actii.”

Giddens, who is an advocate of music education and the teaching of history behind instruments such as the banjo, expressed her elation of a global superstar such as Beyoncé, featuring the instrument on the track.

“I used to say many times, as soon as Beyoncé puts the banjo on a track, my job is done. Well, I didn’t expect the banjo to be mine, and I know darn well my job isn’t done, but today is a pretty good day,” she wrote.

Giddens, who was a part of the old-time band Carolina Chocolate Drops, won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album for their 2010 release, Genuine Negro Jig.

Giddens started her music career in 2005 after meeting instrumentalists Dom Flemons and Súle Greg Wilson at the Black Banjo Then and Now Gathering, in Boone, North Carolina. The trio started a string band called Sankofa Strings, which translates to “retrieve” or “go back and get it” in the Twi language (spoken in southern and central Ghana). Giddens and Flemons went on to form Carolina Chocolate Drops shortly after with fiddle player Justin Robinson. The old-time band consisted of all members singing and playing instruments such as the banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, bones, jug, and kazoo– heavily influenced and mentored by legendary North Carolina fiddle player, Joe Thompson.

Carolina Chocolate Drops went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album for their 2010 release, Genuine Negro Jig, and Giddens has released five albums throughout her decorated solo career, winning another Grammy (Best Folk Album) in 2022 for her collaborative project with Italian multi-instrumentalist, Francesco Turrisi. Giddens’ latest release, You’re The One, finds the multi-talented artist tapping more into her rock, blues, gospel, and Cajun music influences, featuring Americana star Jason Isbell on the track, “Yet to Be.”

Giddens was also a member of the rock supergroup, The New Basement Tapes, which featured Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), and Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons). The group released an album in 2014 (Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes) produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, which consisted of a series of tracks based on lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967.

In 2023, Giddens won the Pulitzer Prize for Omar, an opera loosely based on the life of Omar ibn Said, who wrote the only documented memoir by a slave in America in Arabic, A Muslim American Slave: The Life of Omar ibn Said, in 1831. Giddens wrote the libretto and composed the music alongside Michael Abels, who is best known for scoring Jordan Peele films Get OutUs, and Nope

Giddens has also published two children’s books based on the lyrics to her songs “Build A House” and “We Could Fly.”

While many may be discovering Giddens nationally through her instrumental feature on Beyoncé’s “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM,” from the pop star’s forthcoming album (set to be released on March 29), Giddens has long been a North Carolina treasure.

  • 3 restaurants in the Triangle make Forbes list of the very best in the world

3 restaurants in the Triangle make Forbes list of the very best in the world

    [ad_1]

Three Triangle restaurants were named Forbes Travel Guide Star Award Winners in a recent report, highlighting the very best restaurants in the world.

One was ranked a five-star restaurant, earning that accolade from Forbes alongside only 77 other restaurants across the globe in 2024.

The Forbes Travel Guide’s 2024 Star Awards reflect the best hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruises, taking into consideration “destinations offering meaningful experiences, as well as smaller U.S. cities that are often overlooked.”

Six restaurants in North Carolina made the list, with restaurants in Charlotte, Asheville and Highlands.

This is FTG’s 66th annual list of Star Awards winners. To read the full list of 2024 winners, visit forbestravelguide.com/award-winners. You can filter the list to specific areas across the world.

Here are the three restaurants in the Raleigh area that received high praise.

Herons, located inside the Umstead Hotel in Cary, is an elegant, contemporary setting.

    Cary’s Herons named a 5-star restaurant

Forbes declared Herons — a nature, art and wellness-inspired restaurant within Cary’s luxury Umstead Hotel and Spa — a five-star spot.

“A passion for locally grown fruits and vegetables and farm-fresh meats and seafood is evident in the often-flawless fare. Fresh flavors, surprising combinations, and eye-catching presentations are the hallmarks of the dining experience here,” FTG wrote.

Herons is one of only 78 five-star restaurants in the world on Forbes’ 2024 Star Awards list.

Herons’ chef de cuisine Spencer Thomson, left, laughs with executive chef Steven Devereaux Greene in the Cary restaurant’s kitchen at the start of dinner service on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2019. Thomson and Greene have worked together for years at various restaurants including Devereaux’s.

Here are FTG’s Inspector’s Highlights from the restaurant:

    • The intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the wooded grounds.

    • You can choose a three- or four-course meal, or opt for the chef’s signature eight-course kaiseki dinner. Each course showcases Herons’ style of food in an intricate and artful form and creatively puts a regional spin on American cuisine.

    • There is generally a pleasant background murmur of voices from fellow diners, hotel guests and bar patrons. It allows for conversation without feeling stuffy. Plus, there’s piano music and live jazz on Friday and Saturday evenings.

    • The dining room is elegant and hushed with an open, soundproof kitchen that often mesmerizes guests as they watch Heron’s culinary masters in action.

    • A stellar wine list features more than 1,600 wines. Craft beer and signature cocktails are also available.

In 2019, The News & Observer named Herons the top restaurant in the area for the second time.

“[Executive chef Steven Devereaux] Greene, a James Beard Award semifinalist, returned to Herons as executive chef in 2014 and has never failed to deliver a memorable meal when I’ve eaten there,” wrote The N&O’s then-restaurant critic Greg Cox.

“But the last one was an experience that rose to the level of transcendent. I indulged in an eight-course tasting menu called The Art Tour, with each course inspired by a work of art on the premises of the Umstead Hotel.”

Pittsboro’s Fearrington House Restaurant named 4-star restaurant

Forbes declared The Fearrington House Restaurant — described as a charming dining room just a few miles south of Chapel Hill in Pittsboro — a four-star eatery.

“Dinner lives up to the lovely surroundings. The upscale menu is American, with techniques borrowed from France and robust flavors taken from the surrounding region. The thoughtful, seasonal menu is complemented by a deep international wine list that features close to 500 selections with a focus on California varietals,” FTG wrote.

Fearrington House Inn & Restaurant in Pittsboro announced this week that its longtime chef Colin Bedford would depart, and that sous chef Paul Gagne had been tapped to lead the famous kitchen.
Fearrington House Inn & Restaurant in Pittsboro announced this week that its longtime chef Colin Bedford would depart, and that sous chef Paul Gagne had been tapped to lead the famous kitchen. Krystal Kast

Here are FTG’s Inspector’s Highlights from the restaurant:

    • Removed from the city and sitting adjacent to grassy meadows, the restaurant and luxury inn exude peace and quiet. You’ll hear crickets and the trickling fountains when walking to the restaurant’s doorway at dusk.

    • The gardens surrounding the old 1927 farmhouse are worthy of a pre-dinner stroll. Take a seat in one of the Adirondack chairs under the ancient oak trees to watch the Belted Galloway cows make their evening migration from one meadow to the other.

    • Ingredients often hail from nearby farms, including eggs from Lu’s Farm, cheeses from Looking Glass Creamery and micro greens from Duckwood Farms — reminding you of the rural setting of this fine-dining locale. Some ingredients, like the honey, come straight from the Fearrington property itself.

Head chef Paul Gagne told The N&O in 2022 he was drawn to Fearrington because he found the kitchen to be a rare blend of artistry and cutting-edge techniques, then seeing fine dining in a whole new way.

“Building the plate, sure that’s artistry. But I always saw the cooking side as science,” he said.

Durham’s Fairview Dining Room among best restaurants in the world

Fairview Dining Room is located in the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, a premier hotel in Durham that Forbes says intertwines tradition with a high-end class.

“Executive chef Troy Stauffer’s menu is one that’s filled with New American cuisine done with subtle preparatory winks to the old South. Parties of all shapes will enjoy the seasonal dishes — and while a few of them will tap their feet to the nightly piano tunes, all will certainly leave with a smile,” FTG wrote.

Here are FTG’s Inspector’s Highlights from the restaurant:

    • Fairview has a more refined feel. Servers’ uniforms are clean, conversations are muted and window adornments are classic. But it’s not to be taken too seriously.

    • Many tables look directly onto the Duke University Golf Course.

    • At breakfast and lunch, the energy is quite bright. A lot of this is because the floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the greens.

    • At dinnertime, the mood is still easy, many thanks to the nightly piano tunes.

    Knikouyeh@charlotteobserver.com

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools on Tuesday released projected timelines for the first 12 of 30 projects approved as part of November’s $2.5 billion bond referendum, the largest of its kind in state history.

Billingsville Elementary, Marie G. Davis Montessori Secondary and Sedgefield Elementary are slated to be finished as early as August 2025. The latest projects on the list, including the new Second Ward Medical and Technology High School, are expected to be finished in August 2028, according to a report the CMS school board received Tuesday.

A timeline for the remaining 18 approved projects has not yet been announced. While some include renovation and reconstruction, others will only include design work.

The first three projects — Billingsville, Marie G. Davis and Sedgefield — will be renovated and converted into Montessori magnet programs to replace those at the older Chantilly Montessori and J.T. Williams and move a program from Park Road Montessori. Chantilly is slated to be demolished. J.T. Williams will be used for alternative education.

The first 12 projects with projected completion dates account for roughly $907 million of the total $2.5 billion bond package.

The full list of projects and their completion dates include:

    • Billingsville Montessori – August 2025
    • Cotswald Elementary School – August 2027
    • Dilworth Elementary School – August 2027
    • First Ward Middle School – August 2026
    • Marie G. Davis Montessori Secondary – August 2025
    • New Middle School #1 – August 2026
    • New Second Ward Medical and Technology High School – August 2028
    • North Mecklenburg High School – August 2028
    • Northwest School of the Arts – August 2026
    • Park Road Elementary School – August 2026
    • Sedgefield Montessori – August 2025
    • South Mecklenburg High School – August 2027

Superintendent Crystal Hill and staff on Tuesday also recommended partnering with firms LeChase, Jacobs and Leeper as managers for the entire set of bond projects. CMS Chief Operation Officer Brian Schultz said LeChase and Leeper have been involved with the district as project managers for over 25 years, including the district’s previous 2017 bond projects.

The recommendation is notable because the Black Political Caucus, an influential political group in Charlotte, said it would endorse the bond referendum if CMS committed to rewarding a minimum of 30% of the total bond package’s contracts to minority-owned businesses. Part of the group, R.J. Lepper is a well-known Black-owned construction firm in Charlotte.

Board members, such as Vice Chair Dee Rankin, called on the district to be intentional about bringing in minority-owned businesses as vendors for the various projects.

“Since we do need new schools, my hope would be that we could come up with a strategy to increase the number of companies, especially minority-owned businesses, locally and nationally, that we could work with on this,” said Rankin.

The board will vote on the manager recommendation at its next regular meeting on Feb. 27.

Love actually is all around in Charlotte

In advance of Valentine’s Day, we prompted readers:

“Did you and your sweetheart meet in Charlotte? Tell us where/how.”

We thought the answers might provide an informed map of where to look for love; offer some nostalgia for Charlotte establishments of the past; or maybe inspire a sense of hope in those looking for love. Turns out, your responses did all three.

    Here is a sampling:

“We met in the men’s bathroom @petrasbarone night. The women’s line was too long and I couldn’t wait any longer. No one was in the men’s so I turned to the group of people next to me and let them know what I was about to do so if any men did try to come in, I would be out soon. They said okay. So I went into the bathroom, locked the door, chose to use the stall instead of the urinal (duh), andddddd he was in the stall. Peeing. Andddd I reached out and tapped him on the shoulder (immediate regret lol) and then fumbled my way back to the women’s line (but not before he came out and found me with a huge smile). Been together ever since.” ❤️

“Freedom Park. Married with 2 kids now.” ❤️

“We met coaching volleyball at a CLT HS – just so happened to share the gym at the same time. She taught me nearly everything about a sport I knew little about. She took me on our first date to a @hornets game in 2016 but pretends she didn’t know it was a date.” ❤️

“Married a Charlotte native who took me to Lang Van on our first blind date. Feb 6, 2000. So that’s the date we celebrate the spirit of Valentine’s Day.”❤️

“I met my husband at O’Neils in uptown Charlotte at a Belly Up To The Bar happy hour. We have been married for 37 years!!” ❤️

“New Year’s Eve at Amos’ 22 years ago! Band was Jupiter Coyote.” ❤️

“Bennys Pizza on a not-so-special Monday night! The date went so well we went to solstice and jack beagles because we didn’t want it to end. Married 3 years now with a baby on the way and we still go to Bennys every year to celebrate.” ❤️

“2009 Rich And Bennett’s St Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl! ….. at Suite to be exact!” ❤️

“Meet at Amos’ Southend on St. Patrick’s Day 2001 seeing The Breakfast Club – been together ever since. This fall we will be married for 20 years.” ❤️

“At a habitat for humanity build in 1994. 27 years and 3 kids later.” ❤️

“We met in 2021 through mutual friends at the OG Sycamore (not a setup) and my jaw immediately dropped when he walked over and sat at our table. We both lived in South End and found out our balconies faced each other across the rail trail…hello Romeo and Juliet. I’d randomly throw some signals and a few months later he asked me out. Fast forward a few years and we just got married in December.” ❤️

“First date was at Open Kitchen! My husbands parents also had their first date there!” ❤️

“We met in 7th grade at Providence Day and “went out” for over a year. I switched schools in high school and we went our separate ways. Met again at Seaboard in Matthews – Dec 2016. We got married during the pandemic in Oct 2020.” ❤️

“We met online and our first date was at P Stone (used to be on corner of 7th and Caswell). Both of us from Charlotte and grew up not far from each other. Turns out he knew my brother and met my parents forty years ago. Been together 12 years now and engaged. It’s never too late to find your true love.” ❤️

“My summer job as a bank teller at (then) NationsBank in Myers Park while I was home from college. We chatted, I had my name plate up, he looked me up in the phone book and called me that night. This will be 30 years of marriage.” ❤️

N.C. florist encourages people to support local this Valentine’s Day

    [ad_1]

RALEIGH, N.C. — It’s Valentine’s Day and, according to the National Retail Federation, the average consumer expects to spend about $185 on gifts this year. That’s nearly $8 more than the average amount spent over the last five years.

Surging restaurant and chocolate prices are playing a role that rising cost.

    What You Need To Know

    • The average consumer expects to spend about $185 on gifts for Valentine’s Day this year
    • Flowers are among the holiday’s top three gifts with about 39% of people planning to buy them
    • Tierra George, the owner of TG Floristry, says they plan months in advance for the holiday
    • George also believes it’s incredibly impactful for the entire community when people buy from local shops

According to the January consumer price index, the price of food consumed at restaurants is up 5% year over year. That’s a complete reversal from last year when it was cheaper to dine out.

Additionally, cocoa prices are surging so high that even the biggest chocolate makers are struggling to stay profitable. Climate issues in west Africa, where more than 60% of the global cocoa production is, are damaging crop yields and causing prices to soar.

Meanwhile, flowers are among the holiday’s top three gifts with about 39% of people planning to buy them for their valentine, according to the NRF.

Tierra George, the owner of TG Floristry in downtown Raleigh, says they plan months in advance for the holiday and she believes it’s incredibly impactful for the entire community when people buy from local shops.

“We moved into this space about two and a half years ago. But we’ve been in business for about five years,” George said.

Valentine’s Day is like the Super Bowl for the flower industry.

“On what we do a day, we probably receive maybe four to five times that in this period,” George said. “I think that we have pretty steady day-to-day sales, but Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day definitely kind of blows those out of the water by a long shot.”

Within the last year, George has made flower arrangements for some pretty impressive people, including President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, as well as Gov. Roy Cooper and musical artist Lizzo.

She credits the success of her business to holding community workshops centered around the values they’re committed to.

“A lot of the farms that we do use, they’re either going to be small farms, we use a lot of like BPIOC-owned farms and things like that. All of our farms are like woman owned. So that’s something that we definitely like kind of pride ourselves off of there,” George said.

George says locally-owned shops might not be at the same price point as big box stores. However, she believes when people choose to support small businesses like hers, they’re investing in something much bigger.

“I think we’re trying to do something good. And so I think that any support that we receive in trying to do that, I think that we can do more good than, you know, even more,” George said.

George says she also plans for last minute orders as well as orders that come in tomorrow, the day after Valentine’s Day. She also says that good quality fresh cut flowers should last about two weeks as long as you change the water every couple of days and trim the stems.

  • Preview/Game Details: The Hawks and the Hornets on Valentine’s Day – At The Hive

Preview/Game Details: The Hawks and the Hornets on Valentine’s Day – At The Hive

    [ad_1]

What: Charlotte Hornets (12-41) (7-21 home) vs Atlanta Hawks (24-30) (11-15 away)

    When: 7:00pm Eastern

    Where: Spectrum Center; Charlotte, NC

How to watch: Bally Sports Southeast, NBA League Pass

    Outfitting: Hornets–Statement (purple), Hawks–Association (white)

    Game Lines: Hornets +6.5, O/U 237.5

    Injuries:
Hornets: LaMelo Ball-out (ankle), Mark Williams-out (back)

Hawks: Clint Capela-out (groin), Onyeka Okongwu-out (toe), Mouhamed Gueye-out (back), Wesley Matthews-out (illness)

It’s no coincidence that the Hawks and the Hornets (aka the Birds and the Bees) are playing on Valentine’s Day. Romance is in the air.

The Hornets will be looking for their longest win streak of the season, a whopping three games. They’ve won their previous two by nine points each, which is a larger margin of victory than any win the team had prior. The new players that were picked up at the trade deadline are working out pretty well.

The Hawks took the opposite approach to the trade deadline. Despite rumors swirling around guard Dejounte Murray in the weeks leading up to the deadline, the Hawks elected to stand pat. They completed exactly zero transactions in the days leading up to and following the deadline. They’re riding this thing out as the current ten seed in the East. Though it sounds like a major overhaul is coming this offseason.

For the here and now, the Hornets are in a slightly better run of form. They forced a players only meeting out of the Pacers with their win on Friday. The Hawks have won two out of three but lost to the Bulls in their most recent outing and have now lost another player to injury.

The Hawks barely have a center right now. Top two centers Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu have both been ruled out for this game while rookie Mouhamed Gueye has missed most of the season with a back injury. That leaves one Bruno Fernando as the only healthy center on the roster. Jalen Johnson (who’s probably a dark horse for most improved player this season) seems like the most likely bet to fill in the backup minutes at the five.

The key for the Hornets will be to replicate the success they had in the paint against the Pacers. They made 28-of-38 shot attempts inside the paint (73.4%). Without much rim protection on the other side, the Hornets have every chance to meet or exceed that efficiency around the basket. That’s especially true if they can get the very foul prone Bruno Fernando into foul trouble early in the game.

The Hornets get a whole week off after tonight. They’ll be trying to enter the all star break on the highest of notes.

How was filming ‘Love is Blind’ in Charlotte? Local couples reveal best and worst moments

    [ad_1]

“Love is Blind” stars Clay, Johnny and Trevor interviewing with CharlotteFive’s Chyna Blackmon.

“Love is Blind” stars Clay, Johnny and Trevor interviewing with CharlotteFive’s Chyna Blackmon.

    Netflix

    Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a new season of “Love is Blind” has dropped on Netflix, featuring dozens of Charlotte singles looking for love behind closed doors to date and getting engaged — all before meeting in person.

The dating experiment started with 30 local men and women in the pods, but (spoiler alert) five couples left the pods together.

Ahead of the season’s premiere and the release of the first few episodes, we got to hear from some of the local stars about their experiences on the reality show, including their best and worst moments of the experiment.

    Netflix

While they couldn’t give away all the details on how things turned out after the show, here’s what they told CharlotteFive about how they were feeling behind the scenes. Note: We spoke to the men and the women in separate interviews, and we’ve combined their answers here.

    Netflix

CharlotteFive: With Charlotte being such a small town, were you worried about potentially bumping into someone you already knew?

Johnny: “I feel, like, yes. But I don’t know, Charlotte is still like … it’s a small town in the fact that, like, you see a lot of people. But at the same time, it’s … what are the chances?”

Trevor: “I wasn’t worried it was gonna be someone I know very well, but I feel like it could’ve been someone I met one time and like, it probably really wouldn’t register if it was just someone you met ’cause you don’t get to see them right away.”

Clay: “I didn’t have that fear. I felt as though that I didn’t date around too much in Charlotte where I’ll see someone I’ve known, and plus, I just moved to Charlotte two years ago, so it wasn’t like I knew everybody there.”

Jess: “Yes. I’m from Charlotte and have lived there my entire life so I thought it was — I was almost certain that I would find someone I knew there.”

Amy: “I feel like that was my biggest fear, too. I feel like everybody knows each other in Charlotte so I was just scared that I would run into somebody from the past, but luckily that was not the case.”

AD: “I definitely had the same fear. I work in a very specific, well used to work in a very specific area and with the same people — very small town vibes — and I just knew for sure that someone I knew was gonna be on there, but they did their magic.”

CharlotteFive: Were there any contestants you later found out that you did know of or recognized?

For both the men and women, they all said they didn’t recognize any of the other contestants, but Clay did share one coincidence he later realized.

Clay: “I’ve heard of AD before. It’s actually funny. Someone showed me her Instagram, like when I first moved here. But, like, I never, like, put two and two together.”

CharlotteFive: What made you think you’d have better luck finding your person on ‘Love is Blind’ rather than the dating apps or meeting someone face to face?

Clay: “I never was a big dating app type of guy. And I will tell you, my mom was a big proponent of me joining this show. She was a big advocate. She said that, you know, ’cause I usually lean with trying to, you know, identify the physical features instead of building an emotional connection. So my mom thought it’d be a good opportunity for me to drop that and actually find some real love. It’s actually funny. She was actually talking about “Marriage at First Sight” not “Love is Blind” … so she actually gave me the wrong show to join, but hey it’s all good. It worked out.”

AD: “The dating apps, honestly, I think they should eliminate the bio, anything to get to know you ’cause none of that matters. It’s just, ‘What is that first picture, do you capture my attention, and if so, then now I wanna talk to you’ but only for a short amount of time. And so with “Love is Blind,” that eliminates everything. It’s like the opposite. It takes the photos out and now it’s just strictly bio, who you are, what you have to offer, and that’s where I’m judged. I think being able to do that in reverse changed the game for me.”

CharlotteFive: Knowing what you know now, would you do the experiment again?

Trevor: “Absolutely I would do the experiment again. I loved going through everything with the experiment, from like the lounge, like, getting to know, like, my best friends to getting to a know a girl before judging them by their looks or having them judge me by my looks. I would definitely do it again.”

Jess: “Absolutely. I would do it 100 times over. If I could somehow change that to be, like, my normal dating style, I would do that. Like AD said, having to lead with what honestly really matters and substance … like, that’s such a better plan for success and long-term relationships and marriage. So yes, I would definitely do it again.”

CharlotteFive: What were your highs and lows from the overall experiment?

Johnny: “I’d say high was, I mean honestly just going to the DR (Dominican Republic). I feel like that was a really cool experience just because I’ve never actually left the country before, so being able to do that with my new fiance was absolutely amazing.

“Lows was … so during production, like during the couple days in the pods, we’d always get talked to by the creator, Chris, and he’d say, ‘Hey, like you know the topic of the day is gonna be this specific topic.’ But he’d also bring into the fact, ‘Oh, by the way, so and so decided to leave.’ And I remember one day, ‘cause there’s two Amys, Amy Cai had left. And he said, ‘Oh, Amy left,’ and I felt this, like, my world shake ‘cause he just said Amy. And I was like ‘Oh my God. I lost her. This is not good. Last night, I talked to her and I was like, ‘I have to see you again. She was like, ‘Yes. I have to see you, too,’ and we were so, like, locked into seeing each other the next day.

“So that really affected me a lot, like, that morning and then, I don’t know, I realized on like the next date I had, probably like a couple hours later, that that was Amy (Cai) and I was like, ‘Oh thank God. You aren’t home. Like, I thought I lost you, but I didn’t lose her. It was really nice.”

Trevor: “I’m gonna say mine was the same scene, my high and my low. The scene where Chelsea had to end things with me in the pods. Obviously a low ’cause I was let down and I wasn’t expecting it, but I think it was a high for me because of how I handled it.

“I was really proud of myself to not, like, be upset with her. I was genuinely happy that she was happy, and I think the old me might’ve been a little hurt and said something I didn’t mean in the moment. So I was just happy and proud of myself, how I handled that.”

Jess: “Mine was definitely the relationships I made with the girls so quickly that are forever friendships now, and definitely the lowest point was probably realizing I wasn’t gonna get proposed to.”

AD: “I think mine was a steady right. I don’t think I had peaks and really deep valleys. I think that was life, and I experienced it the way I was supposed to experience it.”

Best Margaritas to Make at Home

    Classic Margarita

If you’re staying home but still want to celebrate the holiday, it’s easy to whip up a classic margarita. Add four ounces of tequila, two ounces of triple sec, and one and a half ounces of lime juice to a shaker, combine, and pour over ice. Garnish with a lime and salt rim, and you’ll have yourself a delicious drink in under five minutes.

    Jalapeño Margarita

For those that want a little spice in their life on National Margarita Day, a jalapeño margarita can be made in no time by just altering the classic margarita recipe a bit. Add four ounces of tequila, two ounces of triple sec, one and a half ounces of lime juice, and about half a jalapeño pepper sliced thinly (or more, if you like it extra spicy) to a shaker. Combine, then garnish with lime and additional jalapeño slices.

    Strawberry Margarita

This recipe from Love and Lemons teaches you how to make a strawberry margarita by using a strawberry puree. It instructs you to take about 10 strawberries, blend them, and strain. Then, combine two ounces of silver tequila, one ounce of orange liqueur, one ounce of lime juice, half an ounce of simple syrup, and two ounces of the puree in a shaker. Combine and pour over ice for a sweet cocktail.

    Skinny Margarita

For a lower calorie margarita option, try a skinny margarita. Take four ounces of a low-calorie tequila, like Espolon Blanco, two ounces of orange juice, and a splash of lime juice for all the flavor without the added calories of a traditional margarita.

    Frozen Blue Moscato Margaritas

If you want to try a recipe that’s a bit more complex this National Margarita Day, these Frozen Blue Moscato Margaritas from Delish are as incredible as they look (and extra boozy!) You’ll need sugar, salt, limes, moscato wine, blue curaçao, tequila, triple sec, and blueberries.

Traffic clogged for 6 miles on I-77 in SC. 3 vehicles collide near bridge repair

The area of congestion is near Chester from about Exit 62 south to around Exit 55 on I-77.

The area of congestion is near Chester from about Exit 62 south to around Exit 55 on I-77.

    The Wichita Eagle

Traffic is clogged for at least 6 miles on Interstate 77 south between Charlotte and Columbia after a collision that happened while one lane of the road was closed for bridge repairs, officials said.

The area of congestion is near Chester from about Exit 62 south to around Exit 55, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol. Miller advised drivers to seek an alternate route if possible. WSOC-TV also reported miles of traffic in southbound lanes.

The traffic slowed after noon when three commercial vehicles in the southbound lane of traffic collided on I-77 south near mile marker 61, Miller said. Troopers were en route to work the incident, Miller said.

I-77 is the main route between Rock Hill and Columbia. There are more vehicles traveling through Chester County on I-77 each day — at least 50,000, officials say — than the 32,000-plus people living in the county.

It remains unclear when crews will clear the crash.

The I-77 southbound bridge under repair is near mile marker 56, according to the S.C. Department of Transportation and the Richburg Fire Department Facebook page.

DOT crews started repairs Tuesday morning after the highway patrol notified them about damage to the bridge deck early Tuesday morning, DOT spokesperson Kelly Moore said in an email to The Herald.

The DOT said bridge repair is expected to be finished later Tuesday.

  • Charlotte baker sells a Mardi Gras classic to help Ukraine

Charlotte baker sells a Mardi Gras classic to help Ukraine

    [ad_1]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte baker is raising money once again to help the people of Ukraine. This time, by selling king cakes for Mardi Gras.

For the last 25 years, Manolo Betancur has been making king cakes for the Charlotte community.

    What You Need To Know

    •  10% of king cake sales will go toward Ukraine aid
    •  Manolo Betancur has been helping with humanitarian efforts in Ukraine for two years
    •  He says he knows the families there still need help
    • His baking helps fund his humanitarian trips overseas

“Since I bought a bakery, every year I donate them for several different nonprofits in Charlotte,” said Betancur.

But two years ago, while preparing for Mardi Gras orders, Betancur said a story in the news caught his eye.

“The invasion of Russia to Ukraine,” he said. “This story was the day before the day before Mardi Gras.”

Even though Manolo was born and raised in Colombia, he says he felt immediately connected with Ukrainians around the world.

“I worked for the military forces of Colombia,” said Betancur. “So that was what I left Colombia because I know how inhumane and bad any war is for any country. The suffering of the children, the suffering of the families.”

It’s a connection that pushed him to jump into action. So he turned to his business, finding ways to create fundraisers through his baked goods to fund missionary trips across the globe.

“My first year was a couple of months after the war. When we were in Poland, we went to the border to Ukraine,” said Betancur.

While it may seem like a big undertaking, for Betancur, he says it’s just his way to give back.

“This is just one human being. We’re doing something good for another human being. That’s it,” he said.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the king cakes sold from Manolo’s Bakery this week will go to his work in Ukraine.

He plans on returning to Ukraine next week to help on the front lines, feeding families and donating supplies.

Now, as we head into Week 4 of the reality dating show, Madina and 14 other women are leaving the infamous Bachelor mansion and heading overseas.

This week, we get two episodes of “The Bachelor,” with episodes on Monday and Tuesday. So how did things go for Madina on Monday night’s episode? Here’s a recap of what happened for the local model and therapist.

    Looking for love in Malta

This week brought another round of group dates, a 1-on-1 date, and a dramatic 2-on-1 date — all in Malta instead of sunny Los Angeles.

Though Madina didn’t get that romantic alone time with Joey in a private date strolling through the European country, she did get to spend time with the Bachelor in a very medieval group date — the largest one of the season.

    The fight for Joey

“The date card said ‘True love is worth fighting for.’ I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty intimidated. But I’m definitely ready to fight for love. I think, like, the other ladies should be scared,” Madina said.

Armed and suited up in true knight fashion, the ladies were put to the test to fight for special time with Joey — from a sword fight to a swinging sausage catching contest (yes, you read that right.)

    Opening up to Joey

She may not have gotten a lot of time with him on the group date, but Madina did get a chance to connect with Joey at the cocktail party — after she surprised him with a miniature knight as a nod to their group date.

“The capital is Mdina here. I did a little research and Mdina means a city that is, like, closed in by walls and so to share this with you, I thought it would segue into something I want to share,” she told him.

“I think, like, through this process, it’s been really difficult just because I have been vulnerable in a lot of areas. But like, if I’m being all the way honest, I don’t feel like I’ve been the most vulnerable with you. I just feel like I have a really hard time trusting because in high school, something between my parents happened that ultimately led to them getting a divorce that I think, honestly, like shattered my trust in both of them, but also in like the concept of love.”

Madina admitted that she has a hard time opening up, and Joey was very receptive and accepting of what she shared.

“I appreciate it 100 percent, whole heartedly. Trust is something that’s earned, and I want you to share things that don’t feel comfortable for you to share,” he told her. “I can tell with just your tone and how you’re talking about this that this is something that is difficult for you. That’s completely okay. So, I just appreciate you sharing these things with me and opening up this side of you because it definitely helps me to understand how I can make you feel more comfortable and how this can continue to grow.”

If his words weren’t enough, the two also capped off their conversation in a cute moment with a trust fall.

“He really saw firsthand, that he did earn my vulnerability,” she said privately.

Drama comes for Madina — again

After wrapping up a meaningful conversation with Joey, Madina found herself entangled in drama once again.

After Joey’s spicy 2-on-1 date (with a lot of tension) to settle the feud between Maria and Sydney that was fueled by Sydney “defending” Madina, Sydney was sent home.

Even though Madina was no longer really involved, she was still confronted by Lea at the cocktail party because she didn’t act sad enough that Sydney was gone.

“I’m so frustrated with how everything went down with Madina and Syd, especially when one second she’s you know ‘Team Syd’ and the second Maria walks in she’s voicing how she’s so happy for her,” Lea privately said.

Lea called Madina aside and told her how disappointed she was.

“I’m just honestly like a little bit frustrated and pretty confused about how, like, you’ve navigated this because last night you called Syd, like, one of your best friends and you were hoping she was gonna come home, but Maria walks in the door and you kind of like switch up,” Lea told Madina. “Your narrative changes a bit.”

But Madina defended herself, saying that she wasn’t doing anything spiteful.

“Maria knows that Sydney and I are close. I don’t have to be mean to Maria because Sydney is my friend,” she told Lea. “You act like I’m purposely doing this. I’m trying to navigate this situation the best I can.”

But the two women agreed to disagree.

Only time will tell what happens with the women in the cocktail party, and who will ultimately be eliminated in this week’s rose ceremony — which will be revealed tomorrow night as this week’s two-day Bachelor marathon continues.

    How to watch “The Bachelor”
