Season 21 of “Top Chef” starts March 20 on Bravo.

    Bravo Media

For the first time ever, someone from the Triangle will compete on “Top Chef.”

Set in Milwaukee, Season 21 of the wildly popular Bravo cooking competition will premiere next month. Among the cast members will be Savannah Miller, the chef de cuisine of M Tempura in Durham.

Miller is only the fourth North Carolina chef to compete on “Top Chef” in the show’s two decades, joining Jamie Lynch of Charlotte, Keith Rhodes of Wilmington and Ashleigh Shanti of Asheville.

“Top Chef” is a coveted showcase for young and talented chefs and an appearance can catapult careers. The newest season will be the show’s first without longtime host Padma Lakshmi, who departed “Top Chef” after Season 20. Taking her place will be popular former winner Kristen Kish.

Miller has been among the Triangle’s most talented chefs since gaining notoriety in 2019 as the chef de cuisine of Michael Lee’s M Tempura. That restaurant earned raves from former News & Observer dining critic Greg Cox, who declared it Restaurant of the Year in 2020.

During the pandemic, Miller was the opening chef at Glasshouse Kitchen in RTP.

This season, Miller will be one of 15 chefs from across the country competing on the show.

  • Why Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center’s Allergists Should Be Your First Choice for Sneezing, Congestion – Charlotte Magazine

Why Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center’s Allergists Should Be Your First Choice for Sneezing, Congestion – Charlotte Magazine

    [ad_1]

Visiting an allergy specialist first is often a strategic approach when dealing with certain health concerns such as recurrent sneezing, congestion, post-nasal drip, cough, and/ or watery, itchy eyes. There are a few reasons why consulting an allergist first may be beneficial before going to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. Allergies can potentially contribute to a range of ENT problems, including nasal congestion, sinusitis, and ear infections. Allergists possess the ability to pinpoint precise allergic triggers through diagnostic testing, aiding in the determination of whether allergies are playing a role in your symptoms, which is often the case. These specialists conduct thorough assessments to uncover any allergens associated with your congestion and other symptoms. Addressing and prioritizing the treatment of underlying allergies can lead the way to improved overall health.

After an initial evaluation, our allergists at Carolina Asthma and Allergy Center can create a tailored treatment plan that targets all allergens. This may include prescribing antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, or allergen immunotherapy to effectively alleviate your symptoms. Additionally, our allergists can provide valuable guidance on making lifestyle changes and environmental adjustments to minimize allergen exposure.

This proactive approach may help prevent the recurrence of ENT symptoms related to allergies. By consulting an allergist first, you can efficiently determine if allergies play a role in your symptoms before exploring other potential causes with an ENT specialist and considering invasive surgery or other treatments.

Inside Rail Trail Lights 2024, Running Through Feb. 18 – Charlotte Magazine

    [ad_1]

Rail Trail Lights, presented by U.S. Bank, is once again illuminating South End with new, never-before-seen interactive light displays. Running through Feb. 18, the event is part of the I Heart Rail Trail initiative, a partnership between the Charlotte Rail Trail, Charlotte Center City Partners, and U.S. Bank. This year’s participating artists include Oliver Lewis, Hnin Nie, Anna G. Dean, and J. Stacy Utley.

In total, 10 artists submitted proposals to be part of Rail Trail Lights this year. “In the past, Charlotte Center City Partners has issued an open call to artists where anyone living or working in North or South Carolina was invited to apply,” says Monica Ponce, Charlotte Center City Partners’ Director of Programs and Events. “This year, the artists were curated by the Charlotte Center City Partners team in collaboration with a local panel of artists, community members, and art enthusiasts. We invited ten artists to submit a proposal, and four were selected from there.”

Installation name: “Fairy Ring” featured in Rail Trail Lights 2021, now a permanent installation at Atherton; Artist: Meredith Connelly; Photographer: Rebrand Medi

Though they’re not told specifically what to create, Charlotte Center City Partners gave a list of parameters to artists and required their creations to be interactive, light-based pieces. Below, learn more about the selected artists’ works this year:

    Oliver Lewis
    Display: “Up-Next”
Installation location: Atherton Plaza near Trolley Barn (2102 S. Blvd)
“Up-Next” is an interactive sculpture that resembles vintage TV sets from the 1980’s. This captivating installation boasts ten massive kaleidoscopes that generate mesmerizing light patterns. Visitors can easily interact with “Up-Next.”

    Hnin Nie
    Display: “Oyster Corner”
Installation location: Kingston Connection near the Rail Trail Chalkboard (108 E. Kingston Ave.)
Created in collaboration with Callender Baker, “Oyster Corner” is inspired by the beauty of nature, particularly the elegance of oyster mushrooms. The vision is to bring a touch of nature to the heart of the city through a monochromatic design featuring a pink tree. The oyster mushrooms will come to life through a play of lights, transitioning from soft pink to warm yellow and a radiant white glow.

    Anna G. Dean
    Display: “Fractal Energy”
Installation location: The Wedge Patio near Flower Child (1537 Camden Rd.)
This sculpture is based on the famous visual representation of a fractal pattern. “Fractal Energy” takes inspiration from two sources: “The Infinity Room” (made popular by Japanese contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama), and the “Sierpinski Triangle.” It is created using equilateral triangles that can be mathematically reduced so that it can be infinitely scalable.

    J. Stacy Utley
    Display:  “Leave the Light On”
Installation location: The Pavilion (next to Futo Buta at 222 E Bland St.)
Inspired by his recent series of paintings, In Transition, and in collaboration with artists Dani Delrio and Karl Hoffman, Utley’s installation titled “Leave the Light On” addresses the impact of gentrification in communities and urban spaces, and the resulting effects on various demographics. Using a simple shape that represents a house, the work represents the homes and lives that have been affected by redevelopment.  The LED lights, while perceived as colorful, are coded. In the 1950s and 60s, redlining maps used the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue as indicator markings to distinguish desired areas from those in decline due to a lack of resources.

Planning on checking out the 2024 edition of Rail Trail Lights? Make a date night of it with a slew of ideas on how to do just that here. Learn more about the entire Rail Trail Lights program here.

February’s the month of love, which means it’s a great time to splurge on an intimate dinner at one of Charlotte’s most romantic restaurants. Whatever the reason, this restored Victorian-era house sees someone on bended knee 40 to 50 times a year.

  • Farah’s Scarves: An Accessory to Freedom – Charlotte Magazine

Farah’s Scarves: An Accessory to Freedom – Charlotte Magazine

    [ad_1]

Farah Usmani was born in Pakistan, a country where women, on average, are paid 16% what men are. It’s a country where poverty, political and religious violence, and an extremely patriarchal culture contribute to a system where only 13% of girls attend school past the ninth grade. Women make up less than a quarter of the workforce. And rates of domestic violence are among the highest in the world—as much as 90% for married women, according to one survey of women in the Punjab region.

Today, Usmani lives near Ballantyne. She’s a full-time communications service specialist for Novant Health and a part-time real estate agent alongside her husband, Najam. She also has a “passion project,” born of her background: selling handmade scarves from her native country and using the money to help people break away from abusive partners.

We meet at Café Monte, near her home. Usmani is petite and unassuming, wearing little makeup and with her dark hair pulled back in a messy bun. “Would you like to go sit in the back?” she asks. “It’s a little more private.” She speaks quickly, but her voice is steady and soothing. We’ve hardly settled at our table before she’s talking about domestic violence: how it can be physical, emotional, or mental; how it can happen to anyone; how difficult it can be for others to spot.

Usmani orders lunch—a burger, because she’s hungry—and passes me a black cardboard box. Inside is a delicate, blush-colored chiffon scarf embellished with hundreds of dime-sized flowers and leaves in pink and green. It took a woman in Pakistan, she says, more than three months to stitch it by hand.

She’s been selling one-of-a-kind scarves like this through her business, Farah Usmani Scarves, since 2019. She buys them from women in Pakistan, which gives them some financial self-sufficiency. Then she resells them in Charlotte and uses the profits to help local victims of domestic violence.

Women in Pakistan often wear scarves for religious and cultural reasons. But Usmani knew women in Charlotte would appreciate the craftsmanship of Pakistani scarves as heirloom fashion accessories.

Farah’s Scarves – an accessory to freedom

Usmani was born in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, in the late ’60s. She, her mother, and her two younger sisters moved often with her father, Akhtar, a structural engineer, for his jobs in Pakistan, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia.  The family moved to Chicago at the start of Usmani’s senior year of high school so she could attend an American university.

After graduation, Usmani helped a friend of her mother’s launch a nonprofit and domestic violence shelter in Chicago called the Hamdard Center. “We were trying to spread the consciousness about domestic violence in the Asian, Indian, and Pakistani communities,” Usmani says. “In those communities, domestic violence is almost a rite of passage.” She worked with the center for a decade.

In 2005, Usmani, Najam, and their three kids moved to Charlotte so Najam could take over a group of tax franchises. But over the years, Usmani couldn’t stop thinking about the women she met in Chicago—and in her native country. “That image of those women and experiences,” she says, “that never leaves you.”

Around 2018, she joined the board of the Jamie Kimble Foundation for Courage in Charlotte, though she’s since left. “They’re doing great work, but their goal is prevention,” she says. “But I couldn’t stop thinking, What about the people who are already in it?

Women in Pakistan often wear scarves for religious and cultural reasons. But Usmani knew women in Charlotte would appreciate the craftsmanship of Pakistani scarves as heirloom fashion accessories. Through a broker in Multan, she began to purchase scarves women in her home country had made.

She buys the scarves for about $45 each, then sells them at Charlotte trunk shows and to word-of-mouth buyers for $200 to $300, depending on their intricacy and material—chiffon, velvet, or silk. The one-of-a-kind scarves come in a variety of colors and styles, each hand-embroidered with intricate designs, often florals. Occasionally, a customer requests a special order—a particular combination of fabric, color, and pattern—and Usmani works with her broker to have it made. She donates a portion of the proceeds from her sales to domestic violence nonprofits, then uses the rest to help strangers who call her.

Usmani has garnered a reputation in Charlotte for her willingness to show up for people abused by their partners. She doesn’t know how most of her callers find her number—though she’s not shy about sharing it—but always rushes to meet them wherever they are: hotels, roadsides, the kids’ shoe department at Target. She says she does whatever she can to help them on their road to escape, from feeding them to buying them plane tickets.

At Café Monte, Usmani tears up once as she talks about the people she’s met but gathers herself quickly—“I don’t want to cry”—and shifts right back to her message.

“I don’t want to be melodramatic, but I want to do this because of God—because if someone’s watching me, someone who’s not a human being, and one day they say, ‘What did you do with your life? When someone called you, did you turn on Breaking Bad and think, whatever, or did you show up?’” Usmani says. “I want to show up.”

  • Chapter 6 Spices Up South End – Charlotte Magazine

Chapter 6 Spices Up South End – Charlotte Magazine

    [ad_1]

The menu at Chapter 6 pulls inspiration from six different regions in the western Mediterranean: Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France, and Italy. It’s also the sixth restaurant for owner Jon Dressler, whose Rare Roots Hospitality portfolio includes The Porter’s House, Fin & Fino, and Dressler’s. Think of it as a spicier, more colorful take on the straightforward steak-and-seafood menus Dressler is known for.

You’ll still find plenty of meat and fresh fish, but it’s dialed up with basil, garlic, mint, preserved lemon, and chiles. The interior is a match for Chapter 6’s punchier flavor profiles, with Mediterranean tiles, rattan pendant lights, and a custom mosaic by local artist Denise Torrance. Much of the staff came from Dressler’s recently closed Dogwood, and Fin & Fino’s beverage director, Brittany “BK” Kellum, leads the cocktail program.

The 7,000-square-foot space opened in September on the ground floor of The Line, a 16-story tower that also houses Sycamore Brewing, Savi Provisions, and Gritbox Fitness. The restaurant is divided into three sections, which keeps it from feeling too big and impersonal. An all-season patio overlooks the Rail Trail and has seating for 80, the main dining room seats 90, and the lounge accommodates 70 with an additional 20 seats at the bar. If you come on a warm evening and don’t mind a bit of noise from the light rail, dine on the patio. On a cold winter night, opt for the lounge, where you can see the mixologists at work.

The Spatchcocked Branzino, topped with blistered tomatoes, zucchini, fennel, onion, and fresh harissa.

The beverage menu features all European wines by the glass, as well as imported beer, tea, and coffee. Cocktails include boozy and nonalcoholic slushies, three spritzes, and a lineup of colorful drinks with names like Amalfi Coastin’ ($15), Capri in the Sun ($15), and Last Night in Ibiza ($15). It’s clear Kellum put as much thought into the names as she did the presentation. Cocktails are served in exquisite flutes, tumblers, and highball glasses with precisely cubic ice and garnished with lemon twists, orange slices, and edible flowers.

Chefs Scott Hollingsworth and Jonathan Cox created the menu of mezze, tapas, skewers, and shareable plates. Start with a savory spread like Whipped Ricotta ($9) or Melty Nduja ($13), a spreadable pork sausage with a fiery kick. If you believe there’s no such thing as too much garlic, go for the Confit Garlic ($9) and ask for extra bread to soak up the herby drippings.

Of the five tapas, the Sherry Braised Pork Cheek ($17) is the standout. Scoop up the pork chunks with the housemade potato chips or slice into them with a fork. Just pace yourself, because this dish is a lot more filling than the modest portion would lead you to believe.

Don’t leave without trying: The Gnocchi & Lamb ($18), with an extra order of bread to soak up the savory sauce.

The Mushroom Toast ($16) is a thick slice of grilled sourdough topped with garlicky cremini mushrooms, creamy marsala sauce, and a fried egg. The Gnocchi & Lamb ($18) is a mix of pillowy potato dumplings and braised lamb in a bowl of sofrito, a Spanish sauce made of tomato paste, olive oil, onions, garlic, herbs, and peppers. Ask your server for more bread if you ran out after the last course because you won’t want to waste this savory sauce.

    Mushroom Toast

Large plates like the Spatchcocked Branzino ($55) and Seafood Feast ($79) are portioned for two to four people. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, opt for “The Treatment” and let the chef surprise you with multiple courses both on and off the menu. For every Treatment ordered, Chapter 6 donates $5 to a local nonprofit.

Desserts include Mom’s Cheesecake ($9), a Dressler family recipe that’s anchored the dessert menu in each of Rare Roots’ restaurants. It’s the most popular for good reason, but the Olive Oil Almond Cake ($14) is a close second. The dense slab of cake has notes of citrus and an airy mascarpone icing that balances the heavy base, while the dried fruit topping adds another layer of texture.

When flavors are this bold, it’s often because chefs are too heavy-handed with butter or salt, but that’s not the case at Chapter 6. That depth and richness comes from a thoughtful blend of herbs, spices, and citruses that won’t leave you parched like soy sauce or queso tend to do. That’s the beauty of Mediterranean cuisine. You can bypass the saltshaker and butter dish without even thinking about it.
