  • International Womens Day is Friday, May 8. Who Inspires Our @WomenofCLT Most?

International Womens Day is Friday, May 8. Who Inspires Our @WomenofCLT Most?

    [ad_1]

The global equality campaign that is International Womens Day is on Friday May 8th this year, so we asked the Charlotte women whom we have featured on our instagram account @womenofclt to tell us who was and is their inspiration to do all the fabulous things they do to make our community a vibrant and creative place. As always we received many wonderful nominations.* The Women of Charlotte really are quite inspiring.

Meet the Women Who Inspired Our Women of Charlotte

I am constantly inspired by the women entrepreneurs in and around the Charlotte area! The hustle. The drive. The grace. The tenacity of these women to forge thoughtful paths for the girls who will follow closely behind.  I am always profoundly amazed by the talent in this city! (photo by @taylorhelmsphotography)

~ Michele Morgan, Charlotte the Figgy

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered numerous remarkable women who have left indelible marks on my life. These extraordinary women, all fellow entrepreneurs, business owners, and Latinas, embody the essence of resilience, determination, and unwavering ambition. Together, we are on a perpetual journey of self-improvement, driven by a collective desire to offer nothing but the finest services to our beloved Queen City. It’s the mutual support, reminding me daily of the power of sisterhood.

~ Juliana Lievano, Alpha Lit Charlotte

    Arden McLaughlin, Definita Publicity

I’m pulling a Niecy Nash and thanking myself. Too few of us look at the hard work we’ve done to get to where we are and thank ourselves. I’m thanking my past self for taking the time, energy, and resources to work on who I want to be and what impact I want to make in this world. I work for the little girls who want to be heard, seen and loved. I work for the older girls who lost themselves along the way. I work for you, the women who simply need a cheerleader. True healing makes this possible.

    Bonika Wilson

I am profoundly inspired by and recommend Bonika Wilson for a feature. She is the owner of WCM Wealth Management Firm and The Business with B, an online platform where she champions the growth of resilient communities through nurturing stronger home relationships. Her insights have been shared in her Amazon BestSeller, “Marriage Business,” and featured in Forbes and Essence. Remarkably, Bonika balances these professional triumphs with her role as a devoted wife of 23 years and a proud boy mom.

~ Bridgette West, 79 West Creative

I love this question! Our Charlotte small business community is truly exceptional. The women owned businesses surrounding and supporting me, inspire me every day! Artists, other jewelry designers, gift shop owners, bakers and makers of all kinds make up a beautiful network of support and inspiration right here in our community. We rise by lifting others and you don’t have to tell the women of Charlotte that twice.. they’ve got it down!

~ Amber Brown, Charlie On Park

    Michelle Coffino

Michelle, some call her Mickey, is by far one of the most inspiring and positive women you will ever meet. She has 8 companies as well as a 501 c-3 non profit for returning citizens. A single mother of triplets and still makes time to help others. What has really inspired me and all of my friends is her drive and positivity to make a difference in everything she does. Her mantra has always been “at the end of the day people will always remember how you treat them”

    ~ Serena Coffino, Dale’s Recycling

Linda Warren, Past CEO of Community Health Charities

One of the most unexpected but influential woman in my life is Linda. Linda was my boss with my first professional job in my career at Community Health Charities. To this day, I remember Linda mentioning that I didn’t work at a potato chip factory and that the job entailed passion, drive, and commitment. This quote has stuck with me throughout my career and it currently is the culture within my own company. From Linda, I learned that you have to be passionated and to believe in your work.

~ Valerie Brooks, Xpressions Floral & Event Design

    Kendra T. Allison, Speechology Services

I am inspired by women who exhibit an unapologetic sense of authenticity. For this reason, I am influenced by many women in society, in my friend group and in my own family. Right now I am drawing inspiration from one of my closest friends, Kendra Allison. Her manifesting power is at an all-time high and I am thoroughly impressed with her growth in business as a fellow Black woman allied health private practice owner. She is doing amazing work and I am blessed to witness it.

~ Dr. Lisa Folden, Healthy Phit Physical Therapy & Wellness Consultants

    Jeanne Martin

Jeanne Martin, my mother, turns 80 on International Women’s Day this year, and she inspires me and everyone who knows her. A Type 1 diabetic for more than 70 years, she has never complained. Even when her heart started to give her trouble a few years ago. She still volunteers every week and works out almost every day – working in her garden, walking or exercising at the YWCA. She has taught me the importance of philanthropy, gratitude and positivity. I wouldn’t be anything without her.

    ~ Jessica Graham, Fionix Consulting

One of my greatest inspirations is my great aunt, Begum Rokeya. She was a trailblazing visionary, feminist, writer, educator, and activist. She is often cited as being central to the women’s liberation movement in the early 1900s in South Asia. Her legacy continues to have ripples today. She constantly inspires me to reflect on what kind of impact I would like to leave behind, and I hope that through my work and advocacy in the field of women’s sexual health I’m able to leave a legacy of my own.

    ~ Dr. Sasha Davenport

    Tori Mehciz

My friend Tori leads with love and has a lasting impact on every single person she meets. Her passion to make the world better influences the way she shows up in everything from friendship & community to church & her businesses. Tori’s commitment to God, boldness & seeing women win in life inspired me in the opening of my latest venture, the Unpause Your Dreams Creative Studio, a place for women to transform their dreams into reality via content creation, podcasting, classes and community.

~ Charlene Ridley, Unpause Your Dreams Creative Studio

Ohavia Phillips, The Oh Show LLC

One woman who inspires me greatly is Ohavia, a powerhouse in both media and sports. Her journey from homelessness to becoming a force in her respective fields is incredibly inspiring. What sets her apart is not just her professional success, but her impeccable heart for community and dedication to empowering young talent in media. Ohavia’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of chasing one’s dreams relentlessly. Her inspiration is global!

    ~ Khayla McCloud

    Ruth Goodwin

When I interned as a therapist while still in graduate school, there was a woman who worked there who’s name was Ruth. Ruth worked with some really tough cases, typically in-home, but she was always having the most fun. Ruth was crafty, always wearing something wild, but joy leaped out of her body and I loved being around her. After starting my own business, I decided that life was too short to not be like Ruth. To make life fun, to create for the heck of it, and to be unapologetically myself.

    ~ Nichole Eaton

    Chasse Bailey-Dorton, The After Cancer

The woman who has inspired me the most, and therefore who has changed my life is my doctor, Chasse Bailey-Dorton. After my cancer diagnosis I went to her broken and afraid. She encouraged me to make some dietary changes that would elevate my health to a higher level. That was the spark that I needed to ignite the fire inside me that ultimately led to me starting Pharmacy In Your Kitchen, where I now encourage people to make some changes in their diet to improve their health and fight disease.

~ Cheryl Hoover, Pharmacy In Your Kitchen

The women who continually inspire me on a daily basis, is the team that I get to work alongside at Hilliard Studio Method. As a business owner myself and trainer at the studio, I know how important it is to surround yourself with a group of females who continually push and drive each other to be better each day. I’ve been lucky enough to find that group of women at Hilliard Studio Method.

~ Abbey Bruggeworth, The All In Haus

Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long, The Southern C

First, I have to say Mother Nature inspires me to create so much of my landscapes and florals. She is timeless, authentic, and possesses true beauty! Mother Nature always restores my soul when I spend time with her.

The Southern Coterie’s co-founders, Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long who host an annual Summit to provide an authentic way for women owned founders to discover talent that meet their needs as they grow their businesses and be inspired as they connect, collaborate, and create!

~ Courtney Salton, Courtney Salton Fine Art

My Grandma Claire, my friends Robyn Vizzone, Sarah Fuller, Kim Daunis and my book club crew for giving me the encouragement to start my own business. Locally, Kelsey Moore; my friend, supporter & sounding board. SO many women artists/ business owners who inspire me here in CLT. To name a few, Jules from @grow.clt, Jacquelyn from @twineandtwig, the ladies from @houseofnomad, @barriebenson, Holly @hckeogh, @jengerenadesign, Megan @easterdaycreative but gosh so many more!

~ Natalie Papier, Home Ec Op

Shaleiah Sanders/ Life For The Hopeless Foundation

I am writing to recommend my daughter, Shaleiah Sanders, for recognition and feature on International Women’s Day for the outstanding work she is doing with her nonprofit organization, Life For The Hopeless Foundation. As her parent, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication, passion, and impact she has made in the community through her initiatives in continuing to break the stigma around mental health.
Shaleiah has created various programs to provide resources and services.

    ~ Andrea Grier

It’s hard to name just a couple but my Aunt Jenny Laird is one of my biggest inspirations – she is a playwright and published author but more so she’s a mother to my cousin Quinn who has severe autism and suffers from seizures regularly & in spite of all of that he is the happiest kid there is due to the love and light that is poured into him on a daily basis! I’m also inspired by Cathy Heller (check out her podcast) – her authenticity and compassion are unmatched & it’s very inspiring!

~ Kacey Johnson – Ladies Lifestyle Network

    Mckenzie Cunningham Queens Hand Collaborative

My client Mckenzie Cunningham. She is a force to be reckoned with – a single mother of 2, CEO of Queens Hand Collaborative, girls-girl to her core & one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. She started QHC because she was tired of having a boss, tired of the 9-5 corporate grind, & wanted to be an inspiration for her kids. She’s paving the ways for small businesses to shine; gives them a voice, brings them to the forefront of the hottest bars in CLT, & is your biggest cheer leader!

~ Jamie Price, Piper Fox Social

Khanh Mai – NC Nails Esthetics Academy

I would like to nominate my sister/business partner, Khanh Mai, as the woman who inspires me. I have never met a person who is more “whole” than Khanh. She somehow manages to be the best boss and shows up for her friends/family. She takes great care of her colleagues. She gives back to her community through many charity and fundraising events. But best of all, she always puts her family first, especially her kids. Whether she is a mom, a wife, a boss, or a friend, she is 1000% THE best person.

~ Vy Cunningham – NC Nails Esthetics Academy

Holly McLelland Delectables by Holly Catering

Holly McLelland, owner of Delectables by Holly, has shown me support and shared her years of experience with me to help me start and build my business. I will be forever grateful for her willingness to share her knowledge and for giving me the opportunity to share her space.

~ Mary Jayne Wilson, Thoughtful Baking Co

DeAnna Allen The Brown Sugar Collab

The women who inspire me most are the African-American entrepreneurs of the early 1900s who defied societal norms and overcame immense challenges to achieve remarkable success. In spite of them having limited access to resources and dealing with gender and racial biases, African-American women like Annie Turnbo Malone and Mary Ellen Pleasant managed to thrive as entrepreneurs. As I navigate my own journey, I draw inspiration from these remarkable women who dared to dream big.

    Martha Soule

The woman who inspires me is my mother, Martha.
She taught me to be super hard working, responsible, giving, and to never give up! My first job was working along side her and now we own multiple restaurants together. She has made me the woman I am today!

~ Rashel Limper, Rio 150 Mexican Restaurant

I’m inspired by the artisans we serve in Charlotte, as well as around the world, especially in rural villages in Rwanda and Uganda. Their resilience and bravery inspire me and motivate me daily. The inequities in our world are heartbreaking, and these women overcome trauma we can’t even imagine. I just got back from two weeks visiting our artisans in Africa to witness their bravery once again first hand.

    ~ Beth Bell, Braveworks

Cherise Walker, Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control Board

Cherise Walker is a great business leader, dedicated mentor, and tremendous friend. She was recently recognized by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte Steele Creek Center as the Diversity Inclusion and Global Ambassador for 2023.  Cherise currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control Board, where she’s helping foster and promote Meck ABC’s commitment to the community through youth awareness events, overseeing, and championing diversity.

    ~ Brittney Bogues, Bogues Group

    Melissa Carnegie, @MelissaChanel for @KicksandFros

Melissa Carnegie is the owner of Kicks and Fros, a Charlotte-based sneaker community that was just featured in the latest season of Love is Blind. She is constantly on the go and working towards building her business to new heights. I’m in awe of her ability to balance family, a personal brand, and an entrepreneurial career. I’m proud to be able to call her my friend.

    ~ Tomi Obebe, @GoodTomiCha and @InfluenceCLT

    Anna Tartak, Ashland Advertising

A woman who inspires me greatly is Charlotte’s very own Anna Tartak — Principal of Ashland Advertising and co-founder of Clutch Coaching. She’s not only a badass in her career — she’s a rockstar at home (where it matters most in my book) as a dedicated wife and mother of two young soccer stars. I’ve witnessed her commitment to her own personal and professional development over the years. This is one woman who practices what she preaches. Trust me, I know. We vacation together.

    ~ Carolina Marrelli, EquiBalance Health

NC man who threw flagpole-type object at US Capitol police on Jan. 6 headed to prison

    [ad_1]

    U.S. Attorney’s Office

A Rutherford County man pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges on Wednesday for his actions related to the breaching of the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, which included picking up a flagpole-like object and throwing it toward a line of police officers.

Anthony Mastanduno, 61, pleaded guilty to a nine-count indictment, including six felony charges, a release from the U.S. Department of Justice said.

    Those felonies were:

    • Civil disorder

    • Entering and remaining in a restricted area with a deadly and dangerous weapon

    • Becoming involved in physical violence in a restricted area or groups with a deadly and dangerous weapon

    • Two counts of assaulting

    • Resisting or impeding certain officers using a deadly and dangerous weapon

Additionally, Mastanduno pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges that included disorderly conduct in a capitol building, an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or building, parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

An image from the US Attorney’s Office shows Anthony Mastanduno, circled in red, with a pole-like object as he approaches a line of officers at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021.
An image from the US Attorney’s Office shows Anthony Mastanduno, circled in red, with a pole-like object as he approaches a line of officers at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021. US Attorney’s Office

Mastanduno at the Capitol building in Washington D.C.

The release said court documents showed that on Jan. 6, 2021, in the afternoon, Mastanduno entered the Capitol building via the Senate Wing Door, about four minutes after it was first breached by rioters.

He made his way to the Capitol Crypt, where he was at the front of a line of rioters who overwhelmed police officers in the area. Almost 20 minutes after he first entered, Mastanduno exited the Capitol building and made his way to the Lower West Terrace.

There, police formed a defensive line at the mouth of an archway leading to an entrance of the Capitol building known as the Tunnel. Rioters at the location “battled” with police officers for hours, the release said, in an attempt to storm the Capitol building.

The release said the Tunnel was the site of “some of the most violent attacks against law enforcement” on Jan. 6.

    Coordinated attacks on police

Later that afternoon, Mastanduno began participating in coordinated attacks on uniformed police protecting the tunnel after engaging with other rioters.

Picking up a blue, flagpole-like object, Mastanduno threw it into the mouth of the tunnel towards the line of officers “as if throwing a javelin or spear,” the release said.

He then got a police shield, stolen from officers, which he used to push against the same line of police at the mouth of the Tunnel. He also used a telescoping baton while pushing, the release said, to strike police officers multiple times.

The baton can be worn on the hip and expands in length. Mastanduno aimed for the hands and arms of the officers.

He abandoned his position in the Tunnel after being sprayed with a chemical irritant spray.

The FBI arrested Mastanduno on Aug. 23, 2023, in North Carolina. He will be sentenced by a judge on June 27.

  • Four GOP contests in North Carolina could go to a second election

Four GOP contests in North Carolina could go to a second election

    [ad_1]

There was no clear winner Tuesday in four statewide Republican primary elections, for two congressional seats, lieutenant governor and auditor. The seats could head to second elections to pick the party nominees on May 14.

    What You Need To Know

    •  Four Republican races could be headed for second elections to pick party nominees after North Carolina’s primaries
    •  Two congressional districts, 6 and 13, will have second elections. They are both heavily Republican districts, which means the winner of the primaries will most likely win the seat in November
    •  Second primary elections, which are technically not called runoff elections, will be held May 14
    • The GOP primaries for state auditor and lieutenant governor also appear to be headed to second elections

North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District. (NCGA)

The two congressional districts, 6 and 13, heavily favor Republican candidates after the latest round of redistricting. The winner of the GOP primaries in the two district will most likely win in November’s General Election.

District 13 curves around the Triangle and includes largely rural and suburban areas in eight counties. The GOP nominating contest for District 13 was crowded, with 14 candidates on the ballot.

Kelly Daughtry won more than 27% of the Republican vote for District 13. But she needed 30% to avoid going to a second election. Brad Knott came in second with almost 19% of the vote.

“The results make it clear that voters are seeking a candidate who will prioritize America first,” Daughtry said Tuesday night. “Trump won in a landslide here in North Carolina, and I will work with Trump when I get to Congress to secure the border, reduce inflation, and refocus our foreign policy.”

“We defeated 12 candidates and qualified for a runoff on May 14,” Knott said in a message to supporters Wednesday.

North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District (NCGA)

“We’re hitting the campaign trail again to secure victory in the NC 13 Republican Primary Runoff on May 14 so that I can fight for you in Congress to secure the border, stop the surge in crime and disorder, and reduce inflation by cutting wasteful spending. In the fall election, I will join with President Trump to take the fight to the Democrats,” he said.

In the 6th Congressional District, six candidates ran for the Republican nomination.

Addison McDowell, a first-time candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump, won more than 26% of the vote. He will face off against former Rep. Mark Walker, who won more than 24% of the vote.

Walker represented the 6th District from 2015 to 2021.

The Republican race for lieutenant governor was another crowded one, with 13 candidates vying for the seat. It’s an open race for lieutenant governor, with Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson winning the Republican nomination for governor on Tuesday.

Hal Weatherman won almost 20% of the GOP vote for lieutenant governor. Jim O’Neill can in second with almost 16%.

In the Republican race for state Auditor, Jack Clark and Dave Boliek were the two top candidates, but neither hit 30%.

Voter turnout for the Super Tuesday primary in North Carolina was about 24%. That’s down from four years ago, when about 31% of voters cast ballots in the primaries.

At Lexington Barbecue, a plate of course chopped barbecue is prepared in the kitchen on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 in Lexington, N.C.

    rwillett@newsobserver.com

A barbecue joint ranks as the best in North Carolina — again.

Lexington Barbecue is No. 1 on an annual list of the state’s top places to eat smoked meat paired with sauce, according to results Southern Living published March 6.

The restaurant won a South’s Best award after the magazine worked with researchers at Proof Insights to conduct an online survey. More than 20,000 readers voted on their favorite barbecue joints and other Southern destinations from July 12 to Aug. 23, 2023, the magazine told McClatchy News in an email.

“This time around, they seem to be in something of a traditional mood,” the magazine wrote in its report. “A parade of new, highly-acclaimed barbecue restaurants have opened all over the South in recent years, but the 2024 picks lean toward the tried-and-true.”

Lexington Barbecue, which got its start in 1962, said it sticks “with the true barbecue cooking tradition” of preparing meat over wood. The restaurant is in Lexington, a place synonymous with a regional style of barbecue.

The style — also called “Piedmont” or “Western” — uses “meat from the pork shoulder with a vinegar, ketchup and spice-based sauce.” Meanwhile, Eastern style barbecue incorporates the “whole hog” and skips the tomatoes, according to posts on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Visit North Carolina websites.

What makes the BBQ joint special?

As the latest rankings add fuel to the state’s age-old barbecue debate, Southern Living praised Lexington Barbecue for being “perhaps the quintessential practitioner” of Piedmont-style barbecue, which gets its start over wood or coals.

“The finished meat is chopped or sliced and dressed in the thin vinegar and tomato sauce that locals call ‘dip,’” the magazine wrote. “Pair it up with the region’s unique red-tinged slaw and some golden brown hushpuppies on the side and you have all the makings of a classic North Carolina treat.”

Lexington Barbecue received the statewide recognition for at least the second year in a row. In 2024, the runners-up are:

    • Wilber’s Barbecue in Goldsboro, at No. 2
    • Stamey’s Barbecue in Greensboro, at No. 3
    • Sam Jones BBQ in Raleigh and Winterville, at No. 4
    • B’s Barbecue in Greenville, at No. 5

Lexington is roughly 20 miles south of Winston-Salem.

Panthers Offseason Preview: Morgan and Canales head into first offseason with glaring needs

    [ad_1]

With the NFL season coming to a close last month and the Carolina Panthers new coaching staff and front office cemented, it’s time to turn the attention to the offseason.

It’s no secret Dave Canales has a lot to do ahead of his first new NFL season as a head coach. The former Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator was hired in January to take over as the Panthers seventh head coach (excluding interim coaches) in franchise history, replacing Frank Reich who was fired after a 1-10 start last season.

Dave Canales enters his first offseason as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Photo: Alex Cason / CLTure

Canales has hit the ground running alongside new general manager (and former Panthers linebacker) Dan Morgan, as the two have assembled a new offensive staff, attended the Senior Bowl, and the NFL Scouting Combine.

One advantage Canales has in Carolina is a fully intact defensive coaching staff. After the 2023 Panthers defense ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed per game (293.9) and third in passing defense, the Panthers opted to retain all of the coaches from last year’s team, led by defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Canales hired Brad Idzik to lead the offense and Tracy Smith for special teams, both of whom worked with Canales in both Tampa Bay and Seattle.

Now, with the foundation set, it’s time for Canales and company to get to work. Here’s what’s on their schedule.

    NFL Scouting Combine

The entire league locked in on Indianapolis to get a look at all the hottest prospects in this year’s draft. For a first-year coach, the combine (and subsequent draft) are all about building towards the future. For four days, athletes at all positions went through drills and testing to prove to NFL teams why they are worthy of a draft pick in April.

Carolina has quite a bit of building to do, particularly at wide receiver. They invested in a franchise quarterback last year with the first-overall pick, now they need to give him a weapon or two. The Panthers leading receiver last year was a 34-year-old Adam Thielen, who very much proved he’s still got it, but Bryce Young will need some more threats down the field if he’s expected to grow in 2024.

While not as flashy as wide receivers, other keys to Young’s success will be found along the offensive line and at tight end.

Panthers will need to improve offensive line and wide receiver position to help Bryce Young. Photo: Alex Cason / CLTure

    NFL Free Agency (March 13)

Before the draft, the Panthers will have a chance to find some of those weapons in free agency. Beginning March 13, players no longer under contract with their current teams will hit the market.

The biggest question mark for Carolina in free agency this year is Brian Burns. The edge rusher was set to be a free agent until the Panthers used the franchise tag to lock him in for another year. However, the Panthers used the non-exclusive franchise tag, which allows Burns to continue to negotiate with other teams, but should a team make an offer to sign Burns, Carolina would have the opportunity to match the offer. If the Panthers choose not to match, Burns’s new squad would have to send Carolina two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Alongside Burns, linebacker Frankie Luvu is a high priority free agent, seen by many as the top linebacker to potentially hit the market this offseason. However, Morgan has made it clear the Panthers have every intention of striking a deal with Luvu to keep him in Carolina.

Other notable Panthers set to become unrestricted free agents include edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos, safety Jeremy Chinn, and wide receiver DJ Chark.

Jeremy Chinn is one of the many free agents the Panthers will need to make a decision on during the offseason. Photo: Alex Cason / CLTure

As far as potential targets go, expect Carolina to address those same positions of need: wide receiver, offensive line, and tight end, as well as the defensive line and secondary.

The wide receiver market is relatively thin this year, but potential fits include Bengals wideout Tyler Boyd, Calvin Ridley (Jaguars) and Marquise Brown of the Cardinals.

    Offseason Workouts (April 1)

Once the 2024 Panthers begin to take form with new additions, the team is able to get together and start their workouts. Clubs that hired a new head coach after the end of the 2023 regular season (like the Panthers), may begin offseason workout programs on April 1, while teams with returning staffs begin April 15.

These workouts are “voluntary” and take place in three phases, the first of which consists of two weeks of team meetings, strength and conditioning, and rehab workouts. The next three weeks feature on-field workouts like individual and group drills, as well as walk-throughs. The third and final phase is made up of 10 days of OTAs (organized team activities) spread across four weeks, which include 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, but no live contact.

For a team like the Panthers diving headfirst into a new coach’s scheme, these workouts will be integral to setting the foundation before the preseason.

    NFL Draft (April 25-27)

The NFL Draft is significantly less exciting when your team doesn’t have a first-round pick. The Panthers of course gave up this year’s top pick (which would have been No. 1 overall) last season to snag Young.

What the Panthers do have are the first picks in the second and third round, as well as a fourth-rounder, two fifth-rounders, and one in the sixth.

Second-round speculation this far out from the Draft is difficult, considering so much will change with each team’s needs through free agency. Still, for the Panthers, the needs remain the same: wide receivers and offensive linemen.

When it comes to receivers at No. 33, quite a few names are in the mix, like Keon Coleman (Florida State), Adonai Mitchell (Texas), Ladd McConkey (Georgia) and Troy Franklin (Oregon), and Xavier Legette (South Carolina), among others. If Carolina opts to focus on the offensive line, Troy Fautanu (Washington), Tyler Guyton (Oklahoma), and Jordan Morgan (Arizona) are a few tackles that might be available at the top of the second round.

Rookie Mini Camp (May 3-6 or May 10-13)

After all is said and done at the Draft in Detroit, the newly selected Panthers will report to Charlotte to make their first impressions. The three-day program gives rookies a chance to meet with their new teammates, dive into their new playbooks, and get accustomed to life in the NFL.

For the third time in five years, hopes are renewed for the Carolina Panthers, with a brand new head coach and a clean slate. Canales seems better suited for success than either of his predecessors, inheriting the foundations of a team on the upswing– from a first-overall pick under center to a top defense with a returning coaching staff. The next few months will be key to determining the success of the 2024 Panthers.

  • Recap/Analysis: Hornets lose rough, scrappy game to Magic – At The Hive

Recap/Analysis: Hornets lose rough, scrappy game to Magic – At The Hive

    [ad_1]

Vasilije Micic scored 21 points while Brandon Miller and Tre Mann added 18 apiece, but the Charlotte Hornets lost a physical battle to the Orlando Magic, 101-89.

    Summary

Both teams got off to slow, sloppy starts. The Hornets, and Vasilije Micic in particular, were the first to get untracked and took an early lead. Turnovers and Miles Bridges missed shots stymied the Hornets offense and let the Magic go on a 16-2 run that lasted until the final seconds of the quarter. The Hornets turned the ball over seven times (five being live ball turnovers) and only grabbed five total rebounds. The sloppy opening frame put them in a five point hole.

The second quarter was largely uneventful. The Hornets briefly went on a small run thanks in part to a Davis Bertans layup and a couple of his threes that helped even the game. Brandon Miller added his own three off a curl in the last minute to pull the Hornets within one before a pair of Anthony Black free throws set the margin at three at the half.

The Hornets were gifted a 5-point play early in the second half when Jalen Suggs ran underneath Micic while shooting a three and was called for a flagrant. Micic hit all three free throws then Tre Mann made a floater after the Hornets retained possession. Brandon Miller gave the Hornets the lead a few moments later with a three from the wing. Miles Bridges briefly had to leave the game after getting his wrist hyperextended going for a rebound. The game got chippy after that. Brandon Miller got stripped and probably fouled by a Magic double team. Steve Clifford got in the face of an official and earned himself a technical foul. The Hornets got visibly frustrated by the lack of friendly whistles and the Magic capitalized with a run despite two technicals of their own that gave them a nine point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The teams alternated scores for the first couple of minutes before the Hornets went cold. A 10-0 Magic run put the visitors up 16. Grant Williams hit a pair of free throws and Brandon Miller hit a three, but the Magic answered each. The Hornets stabilized and played the Magic evenly, but they weren’t able to make up any ground as the final minutes ticked down.

    The Good

Vasilije Micic had a good bounce back game after a poor outing that ended with a game sealing turnover on Sunday. He led the Hornets in scoring with 21 points and filled up the rest of the box score decently well. He was much more decisive than he’s been in other recent games and did a good job scoring inside the arc despite his continued struggles from deep.

Davis Bertans has been fun to watch. He was firing shots off with nary a care in the world and hit a fair amount of them. He even hit a pull-up three off the dribble in a late shot clock situation.

Brandon Miller validated his second straight rookie of the month honor with a solid 18 point, five rebound, three assist performance. We’ve become spoiled by how easily he makes it look. His season would typically be a strong case for rookie of the year. He just happens to be in the same rookie class as Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren.

Tre Mann had a really good game and made a few really impressive plays. He seems like a good piece; he just needs to be more consistently aggressive. His talent was on display in this game. He had another pair of steals and some acrobatic finishes around the basket.

    The Bad

Miles Bridges had a really rough night. He made just one of his eight shots in the first quarter while the rest of the Hornets were 7-of-9. He struggled to get good looks and put up a lot of heavily contested shots around the basket. He converted two of his 10 shot attempts inside the paint.

Bryce McGowens flirted with an 18 trillion. He played 18 minutes and his only box score contributions were one assist, one turnover, and one foul. He was as invisible on the court as his box score numbers would suggest.

The Hornets struggled with the Magic’s defensive effort. The Magic generated nine steals and had a whole lot more deflections and near steals that disrupted the Hornets offense. It’s been a recurring for the Hornets all season, and those problems were extra noticeable against a scrappy Magic defense.

    What’s Next

The Hornets get two whole days off before visiting the Wizards on Friday. It’s the first of four straight ‘winnable’ games for the Hornets.

President Joe Biden’s Super Tuesday Focus Is On Donald Trump – WCCB Charlotte’s CW

    [ad_1]

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is choosing not to revel in his Super Tuesday nomination wins. Instead, he’s telling Americans it is time to defend democracy.

“My message to the country is this,” Biden said in a written statement from his campaign. “Every generation of Americans will face a moment when it has to defend democracy. Stand up for our personal freedom. Stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights. To every Democrat, Republican, and independent who believes in a free and fair America: This is our moment. This is our fight. Together, we will win.”

Biden is casting Republican Donald Trump as someone willing to reverse his policies on taxes and improve affordability for prescription drugs. But, mostly, a written statement from the president was an admonition to voters about Trump’s time in office and that he cares about “revenge and retribution, not the American people.”

  • How many delegates does a candidate need to be the party’s nominee?

How many delegates does a candidate need to be the party’s nominee?

    [ad_1]

Nobody in the presidential race can lock up the nomination on Super Tuesday, but each party’s frontrunner can get pretty close.

WASHINGTON — As the results from Super Tuesday are released, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are inching even closer to a rematch of their 2020 race.

While more than one-third of the total delegates available in both the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries are awarded on Super Tuesday, Biden and Trump still can’t officially clinch the nominations yet.

How many delegates does a candidate need to win the nomination?

A candidate must get the majority of their party’s delegates to win the nomination.

For Republicans, a candidate needs at least 1,215 out of 2,429 delegates to win the nomination.

For Democrats, a candidate needs 1,969 out of about 3,900 delegates to win the nomination.

ELECTION RESULTS: 16 states voted on Super Tuesday. Here are the results.

When can Trump clinch the Republican nomination?

Heading into Super Tuesday, Trump needed 971 more delegates to hit the “magic number” of 1,215. At that point, he’ll have won a majority of available delegates to the Republican convention this summer and will be considered the party’s presumptive nominee.

The earliest Trump can hit that number is March 12. Republican delegate rules vary by state, but their system generally makes it easier for frontrunners to quickly rack up large numbers of delegates because many states award all their delegates to whoever wins a majority of the vote.

When can Biden clinch the Democratic nomination?

Biden’s “magic number” currently sits at 1,968, though that could change depending on how the party decides to handle New Hampshire, which broke party rules by holding its primary in January.

The earliest Biden can hit that figure is March 19. Democrats award delegates proportionally everywhere, making it easier (in theory) for trailing candidates to pick up delegates.

    What is a delegate?

In the context of presidential elections, delegates are individuals who represent their state or community at their party’s presidential nominating convention. These delegates choose a presidential candidate to represent the national party in the November general election. They also approve the party’s platform and adopt rules governing the party. Delegates tend to be party insiders or activists or early supporters of a particular presidential candidate.

  • Preview/Game Details: Charlotte Hornets host upstart Magic – At The Hive

Preview/Game Details: Charlotte Hornets host upstart Magic – At The Hive

    [ad_1]

What: Charlotte Hornets (15-46) (8-22 home) vs Orlando Magic (35-26) (14-18 away)

    When: 7:00pm Eastern

    Where: Spectrum Center; Charlotte, NC

How to watch: Bally Sports Southeast, NBA League Pass

    Outfitting: Hornets–Statement (purple), Magic–Association (white)

    Game Lines: Hornets +8.5, O/U 208.5

    Injuries:
Hornets: LaMelo Ball-out (ankle), Cody Martin-out (ankle), Seth Curry-out (ankle), Mark Williams-out (back), Nick Richards-questionable (foot)

    Magic: Markelle Fultz-questionable (knee)

Yesterday, the Hornets announced that Seth Curry and Cody Martin would be reevaluated in two weeks as they recover from sprained ankles, so expect to see them join the injury report as mainstays.

The Hornets have crashed back down to Earth after their four game winning streak. They’ve lost their last four and five of their last six. The one win came over the equally despondent Trail Blazers. They’ve at least been competitive most of the time, which is more than could be said for a large stretch of the middle of the season.

Tonight’s opponent is a difficult match-up though. The Magic are on the ascent after a couple of lean years that coincidentally started with the last year of the Steve Clifford era. They’ve done a good job assembling talent, and it’s starting to pay off. They have a clear identity–they’re gritty and scrappy and give nothing away easily. They have the fifth best defensive rating in the league and are one of the better teams in the league on both the offensive and defensive glass. They play slow. They grind out games.

It’s a less-than-ideal kind of opponent for the Hornets. The Hornets are one of the worst teams in the league at scoring in the half court. They’ve been headstrong forcing up 2-point field goal attempts, and there’s little chance that works against a Magic team that’s going to contest every shot and bother the Hornets with their length. The Magic clean up the glass, so the Hornets aren’t going to have many chances to win there. On the other side of the floor, the Hornets have struggled to rebound, especially in recent weeks. The Magic are good at tracking their own misses.

The Hornets improved defense should be able to limit the Magic’s still developing offense, but it’s tough to see that being enough to give the Hornets a great chance of winning.

On paper, it looks like another one of those 108-98 type losses that have become somewhat common for the Hornets lately. It’ll be a slow, low scoring game that is sure to have it’s fair share of ugly moments and scoring droughts.

    [ad_1]

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a fresh stack of books to keep your entertained wherever this season takes you! The latest must-reads include a historical fiction novel set during the Vietnam War, twisty thrillers to keep you up at night and a paranormal romance about otherworldly love.

Pick up these titles at Park Road Books or Main St. Books in Davidson or shop via the Amazon links below (book summaries quoted from Amazon.com).

    Page-Turning Fiction

The Women by Kristen Hannah (‎St. Martin’s Press)

This is the book everyone’s talking about!

“From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah’s The Women―at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets―and becomes one of―the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.”

After Annie by Anna Quindlen (Random House)

“Anna Quindlen’s trademark wisdom on family, friendship, and the ties that bind us are at the center of this novel about the power of love to transcend loss and triumph over adversity, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Still Life with Bread Crumbs and One True Thing.

When Annie Brown dies suddenly, her husband, her children, and her closest friend are left to find a way forward without the woman who has been the lynchpin of all their lives. Bill is overwhelmed without his beloved wife, and Annemarie wrestles with the bad habits her best friend had helped her overcome. And Ali, the eldest of Annie’s children, has to grow up overnight, to care for her younger brothers and even her father and to puzzle out for herself many of the mysteries of adult life.

Over the course of the next year what saves them all is Annie, ever-present in their minds, loving but not sentimental, caring but nobody’s fool, a voice in their heads that is funny and sharp and remarkably clear. The power she has given to those who loved her is the power to go on without her. The lesson they learn is that no one beloved is ever truly gone.

Written in Quindlen’s emotionally resonant voice and with her deep and generous understanding of people, After Annie is about hope, and about the unexpected power of adversity to change us in profound and indelible ways.”

“1985. Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name has been all but forgotten―certainly by the time Raquel, a third-year art history student is preparing her final thesis. On College Hill, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color, like her, are the minority there, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret.

But when Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks. As she attempts to straddle both worlds, she stumbles upon Anita’s story, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist.

Moving back and forth through time and told from the perspectives of both women, Anita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive, witty examination of power, love, and art, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite.”

The Phoenix Crown by Kate Quinn & Janie Chang (William Morrow Paperbacks)

“From bestselling authors Janie Chang and Kate Quinn, a thrilling and unforgettable narrative about the intertwined lives of two wronged women, spanning from the chaos of the San Francisco earthquake to the glittering palaces of Versailles.

San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

His patronage offers Gemma and Suling the chance of a lifetime, but their lives are thrown into turmoil when a devastating earthquake rips San Francisco apart and Thornton disappears, leaving behind a mystery reaching further than anyone could have imagined . . . until the Phoenix Crown reappears five years later at a sumptuous Paris costume ball, drawing Gemma and Suling together in one last desperate quest for justice.”

Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange (Random House)

“The eagerly awaited follow-up to Pulitzer Prize finalist Tommy Orange’s breakout best seller There There—winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award, the John Leonard Prize, the American Book Award, and one of the New York Times Ten Best Books of the Year—Wandering Stars traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Industrial School for Indians through to the shattering aftermath of Orvil Redfeather’s shooting in There There.

Colorado, 1864. Star, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre, is brought to the Fort Marion Prison Castle, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Industrial School for Indians, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history, culture, and identity. A generation later, Star’s son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola, as the two envision a future away from the institutional violence that follows their bloodline.

Oakland, 2018. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield is barely holding her family together after the shooting that nearly took the life of her nephew Orvil. From the moment he awakens in his hospital bed, Orvil begins compulsively googling school shootings on YouTube. He also becomes emotionally reliant on the prescription medications meant to ease his physical trauma. His younger brother Lony, suffering from PTSD, is struggling to make sense of the carnage he witnessed at the shooting by secretly cutting himself and enacting blood rituals which he hopes will connect him to his Cheyenne heritage. Opal is equally adrift, experimenting with Ceremony and peyote, searching for a way to heal her wounded family.

Extending his constellation of narratives into the past and future, Tommy Orange once again delivers a story that is by turns shattering and wondrous, a book piercing in its poetry, sorrow, and rage—a masterful follow-up to his already—classic first novel, and a devastating indictment of America’s war on its own people.”

    James by Percival Everett (Doubleday)

“A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view • From the “literary icon” (Oprah Daily) and Pulitzer Prize Finalist whose novel Erasure is the basis for Cord Jefferson’s critically acclaimed film American Fiction

When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

While many narrative set pieces of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place (floods and storms, stumbling across both unexpected death and unexpected treasure in the myriad stopping points along the river’s banks, encountering the scam artists posing as the Duke and Dauphin…), Jim’s agency, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light.

Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a “literary icon” (Oprah Daily), and one of the most decorated writers of our lifetime, James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.”

    Mysteries & Thrillers

First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston (Pamela Dorman Books)

“Evie Porter has everything a nice, Southern girl could want: a perfect, doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence and a garden, a fancy group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.

The Fury by Alex Micheledes (Celadon Books)

“A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder ― from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

    But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.”

The Teacher by Freida McFadden (Poisoned Pen Press)

“A mind-bending, psychological thriller from Freida McFadden, the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Housemaid!

    Lesson #1: trust no one

Eve has a good life. She gets up each day, gets a kiss from her husband Nate, and heads off to teach math at the local high school. All is as it should be. Except…

Last year, Caseham High was rocked by a scandal involving a student-teacher affair, with one student, Addie, at its center. But Eve knows there is far more to these ugly rumors than meets the eye.

Addie can’t be trusted. She lies. She hurts people. She destroys lives. At least, that’s what everyone says.

But nobody knows the real Addie. Nobody knows the secrets that could destroy her. And Addie will do anything to keep it quiet.

From the New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden comes a story of twisting secrets and long-awaited revenge.”

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins (Poisoned Pen Press)

When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money―and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, his uncle’s death pulls Cam and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but the legacy of Ruby is inescapable.

And as Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will––and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

The Hunter by Tana French (Viking)

“From the New York Times bestselling author of The Searcher and “one of the greatest crime novelists writing today” (Vox), a spellbinding new novel set in the Irish countryside.

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Cal Hooper took early retirement from Chicago PD and moved to rural Ireland looking for peace. He’s found it, more or less: he’s built a relationship with a local woman, Lena, and he’s gradually turning Trey Reddy from a half-feral teenager into a good kid going good places. But then Trey’s long-absent father reappears, bringing along an English millionaire and a scheme to find gold in the townland, and suddenly everything the three of them have been building is under threat. Cal and Lena are both ready to do whatever it takes to protect Trey, but Trey doesn’t want protecting. What she wants is revenge.

From the writer who is “in a class by herself,” (The New York Times), a nuanced, atmospheric tale that explores what we’ll do for our loved ones, what we’ll do for revenge, and what we sacrifice when the two collide.”

A desperate murder committed by Angela Miller’s mother tore Angela’s life apart and brought her to Martha’s Vineyard to live with her wealthy grandparents. It’s where her cousin, Kiki King, was born and raised, and Kiki now wants nothing more than to see the world beyond its sandy perimeter. Kiki’s mother escaped it. She took a late-night swim off Tashmoo Beach and was never seen again.

Once bound by broken childhoods, Angela and Kiki have grown up divided―by their obsessions, their love for the same man, and their own conflicted journeys of motherhood. But when a small box of bones is unearthed in the woods, Angela and Kiki discover there’s so much more to learn about each other, their families, and the dark side of the picturesque island they call home.

It’s time for Angela and Kiki to expose their secrets, to finally end a cycle of family drama and anguish, and to forgive and make peace with the past on their own terms.”

    Riveting Romance

Leap years are a strange, enchanted time. And for some, even a single February can be life-changing.

Ricki Wilde has many talents, but being a Wilde isn’t one of them. As the impulsive, artistic daughter of a powerful Atlanta dynasty, she’s the opposite of her famous socialite sisters. Where they’re long-stemmed roses, she’s a dandelion: an adorable bloom that’s actually a weed, born to float wherever the wind blows. In her bones, Ricki knows that somewhere, a different, more exciting life awaits her.

When regal nonagenarian, Ms. Della, invites her to rent the bottom floor of her Harlem brownstone, Ricki jumps at the chance for a fresh beginning. She leaves behind her family, wealth, and chaotic romantic decisions to realize her dream of opening a flower shop. And just beneath the surface of her new neighborhood, the music, stories and dazzling drama of the Harlem Renaissance still simmers.

One evening in February as the heady, curiously off-season scent of night-blooming jasmine fills the air, Ricki encounters a handsome, deeply mysterious stranger who knocks her world off balance in the most unexpected way.

Set against the backdrop of modern Harlem and Renaissance glamour, A Love Song for Ricki Wilde is a swoon-worthy love story of two passionate artists drawn to the magic, romance, and opportunity of New York, and whose lives are uniquely and irreversibly linked.

    Bride by Ali Hazelwood (Berkley)

“A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast—again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange—again…

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It’s clear from the way he tracks Misery’s every movement that he doesn’t trust her. If only he knew how right he was….

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she’s ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf.”

“From USA Today and Amazon Charts bestselling author Meghan Quinn, comes a new marriage of convenience romantic comedy. This steamy, laugh out loud, enemies-to-lovers small town standalone delivers the perfect happily ever after.

    He proposed . . . and I said yes.
Normally a jovial occasion for a couple in love, but this proposal has a very different feel.
Because the man that I’ll be calling my husband blew into town with one thing on his mind . . . to make my life a living nightmare.

So why did I say yes?

Well, because we both need something from each other.

Namely, I want the farm land he currently owns, and he needs a wife in order to inherit his family cabin in his grandfather’s will.

So as he so eloquently put it, my hand, for his land.

At first, I thought the idea was nuts.
Who really gets married out of convenience?
    Apparently, I do.

And now we have to sell our relationship to the town. Meaning, we’re holding hands, he’s pinching my cheeks . . . upper and lower. We’re even forced to share the one-bedroom guest house on the farm where his monstrous body is taking up a large percentage of the bed.

But we’re so persuasive about our farse, that now I’m starting to think he actually might like me. Especially when he grabs me by the wrist and teases the shell of my ear as he whispers, “Mine.””

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he’s in the Asteri’s dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce’s fate. In this sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath, Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt’s world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.”

“Soledad Barnes has her life all planned out. Because, of course, she does. She plans everything. She designs everything. She fixes everything. She’s a domestic goddess who’s never met a party she couldn’t host or a charge she couldn’t lead. The one with all the answers and the perfect vinaigrette for that summer salad. But none of her varied talents can save her when catastrophe strikes, and the life she built with the man who was supposed to be her forever, goes poof in a cloud of betrayal and disillusion.

But there is no time to pout or sulk, or even grieve the life she lost. She’s too busy keeping a roof over her daughters’ heads and food on the table. And in the process of saving them all, Soledad rediscovers herself. From the ashes of a life burned to the ground, something bold and new can rise.

But then an unlikely man enters the picture—the forbidden one, the one she shouldn’t want but can’t seem to resist. She’s lost it all before and refuses to repeat her mistakes. Can she trust him? Can she trust herself?

After all she’s lost . . .and found . . .can she be brave enough to make room for what could be?”

Kate Bowler believes that the cultural pressure to be cheerful and optimistic at all times has taken a toll on our faith. But what if we could find better language than forced positivity to express our hopes and our anxieties?

Have a Beautiful, Terrible Day! is packed with bite-size reflections and action-oriented steps to help you get through the day, be it good, bad, or totally mediocre. This is a devotional for the rest of us—which is to say, the people who don’t have magical lives that always work out for the best. As she composed these meditations during a season of chronic pain, Bowler understands how every day can be an obstacle course. She encourages us to develop our capacity to feel the breadth of our experiences. The better we are at identifying our highs and lows, the more resilient we become.

Like modern-day psalms, Bowler’s spiritual reflections look for the ways we can expand our capacity for courage, love, and honesty—while discovering divine moments with God. With bonus sections to use during the seasons of Advent and Lent, this is an easy book to read along with other people too.

If you want to build your daily habit of spiritual attentiveness, this book is here to say: May all your days be lovely. But for those that aren’t, have a beautiful, terrible day!

Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere by Savannah Guthrie (Thomas Nelson)

“Mostly what God does is love you.

If we could believe this, really believe this, how different would we be? How different would our lives be? How different would our world be?

If you ever struggle with your connection to God (or whether you even feel connected to a faith at all!), you’re not alone. Especially in our modern world, with its relentless, never-ending news cycle, we can all grapple with such questions. Do we do that alone, with despair and resignation? Or do we make sense of it with God, and with hope? In these uncertain times, could believing in the power of divine love make the most sense?

In this collection of essays, Savannah Guthrie shares why she believes it does. Unspooling personal stories from her own joys and sorrows as a daughter, mother, wife, friend, and professional journalist, the award-winning TODAY show coanchor and New York Timesbestselling author explores the place of faith in everyday life.

Sharing hard-won wisdom forged from mountaintop triumphs, crushing failures, and even the mundane moments of day-to-day living, Mostly What God Does reveals the transformative ways that belief in God helps us discover real hope for this life and beyond.

A perfect companion to your morning cup of coffee, this incisive volume—not a memoir but a beautiful tapestry of reflections crafted as a spiritual manual—includes:

    • a fresh, biblically rooted look at six essentials of faith: love, presence, grace, hope, gratitude, and purpose;
    • an honest exploration of questions, doubts, and fears about the love of God;
    • a dose of encouragement for the faith-full, the faith-curious, and the faith-less; and
    • …and much more.

This deeply personal collection is designed to engage the practical ways that God loves you—not just the world, but you—and to inspire you to venture down a path of faith that is authentic, hopeful, destiny-shaping, and ultimately life-changing.”
