  • Retro Tech: Meet The NeoFilm 100 Miniature Digital Film Roll Camera

    [ad_1]

The OPT100 NeoFilm 100, a new release from the brand Opt!, reinterprets the classic 35mm film canister as a fully functional miniature digital camera. This device aims to merge nostalgic analog aesthetics with modern digital convenience, catering to a growing interest in retro-inspired technology. Measuring only 47 x 25 x 25 millimeters ( inches) and weighing approximately 25 grams (~ ounces), the camera is designed for high portability, fitting easily into pockets or serving as a wearable accessory.

Despite its diminutive scale, the device possesses capable hardware. It can capture still images at a resolution of 3760 x 2128 and record full HD video at 1920 x 1080 at 30 frames per second. The rear of the canister features a small display screen that allows users to frame shots and preview images, which are automatically processed with retro-style filters. For storage, the camera supports microSDHC cards up to 32 GB, and files are transferred via a standard card reader.

The design emphasizes historical accuracy through its visual language. Available in colorways such as Yellow and Black or White and Orange, the external skins mimic the graphic design found on traditional analog film packaging.

The functional components are integrated subtly into the frame: the lens and a nearly invisible sensor are positioned at the center, with a small flash located directly above. The shutter button is placed on the side of the canister to maintain the cylinder’s ergonomics.

Additional features include a rechargeable battery that provides roughly one hour of continuous use. To further the vintage theme, each unit comes with a protective barrel case reminiscent of the silicone containers used to store physical film rolls.

This product reflects a broader trend of downsizing technology while referencing the tactile history of photography. Unfortunately, it’s not officially available in the U.S. but it can be bought in Japan via Rakuten Store or Sincere Store for 5,940 Yen (~$39).

Is the SnowSky Echo Mini Right for You?

The SnowSky Echo Mini is best suited for individuals who value a focused, phone-free music experience. It appeals to those who enjoy curating their own music libraries, appreciate retro-inspired designs, or seek to disconnect from the distractions of modern smartphones. Its features, such as USB-C charging, Bluetooth compatibility, and microSD expansion, make it a versatile option for users who prioritize simplicity and quality.

However, it may not be the ideal choice for users who heavily rely on streaming services or require seamless integration across multiple devices. If convenience, instant access, and innovative technology are your top priorities, the limitations of this device, such as slower navigation and manual file transfers, might outweigh its benefits. Ultimately, the SnowSky Echo Mini is a niche product that caters to a specific audience, offering a unique and rewarding listening experience for those who value intentionality and nostalgia in their music consumption.

  • WhatsApp For iOS Updates Design With New Liquid Glass Floating Chat Bar

    [ad_1]

WhatsApp is currently implementing a series of design modifications across its mobile platforms, with a recent focus on enhancing the user interface for iOS. The latest beta version for iPhone (26.7.10.74) introduces a significant visual overhaul of the chat input bar by integrating aesthetic elements inspired by Apple’s “Liquid Glass” design language. This update represents a shift toward a more modern and integrated look that aligns closely with the native styling of the iOS ecosystem.

The most prominent change in this update involves the structural positioning of the navigation and input elements; instead of the traditional fixed block anchored to the bottom of the screen, the chat bar has been transformed into a floating component. This detached design provides a sense of depth and fluidity, making the interface feel less rigid.

Within this new floating structure, the internal icons and interactive fields have also undergone a visual reorganization. The attachment button, the text input field, and the sticker keyboard shortcut are now more distinctly highlighted. Furthermore, the camera function and the voice recording shortcut have been separated into individual elements, moving away from the previous unified background layout.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the primary objective of this redesign is to provide a user experience that feels more organic to the iPhone while simultaneously minimizing visual clutter to keep the focus on the conversation itself. By adopting these floating elements, Meta aims to create a more immersive environment that mirrors the contemporary design trends found in other high-end iOS applications.

While these features are currently visible to beta testers, there is no official release date for the general public using the stable version of the app. In addition to these aesthetic changes, the platform is reportedly testing new privacy features and refinements to its polling system.

  • A Recent 3D Printing Breakthrough Brings Us One Step Closer to You Downloading a Car

    [ad_1]

Back when the movie industry had fewer legitimate existential threats, studios and theaters were utterly apoplectic about the scourge of film pirates supposedly robbing them blind. At the peak of this panic, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) released a controversial study claiming cam-wielding criminals had cost the industry a whopping $18.2 billion in lost revenue for 2005 alone.

The year before, industry-wide anxiety also compelled Warner Bros. and the MPAA to produce one of the most memorable PSAs of the new millennium. Titled “You Wouldn’t Steal a Car,”—and recently revealed to possibly have been made with pirated fonts—the commercials made the case that procuring a burnt DVD or torrent file of a grainy Meet the Fockers was, in fact, tantamount to a B&E robbery or grand theft auto. The two 45-second morality plays contained interstitial title cards insinuating that the presumably honest and law-abiding individual watching would never commit such real-world transgressions. So how come they’re OK with anonymously making or watching digital copies of media from the comfort of their own home?

Immediately, the public reacted to the ads with ridicule, not just at their pearl-clutching corniness, but the central premise itself. As many would point out in the years to come—sure, they’d pass on hotwiring a car in their neighbor’s driveway, but they’d be perfectly fine with downloading one. Once merely a meme, this fantasy is now one huge step closer to reality thanks to a recently reported breakthrough in the field of 3D printing.

A team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has recently developed a printer with four different extruders that outputs five different materials to produce a fully functioning linear motor in about three hours. Publishing their work in the industry journal Virtual and Physical Prototyping, the team explained how by retrofitting a printer with enough extruders to handle the various materials needed to make a working motor, they decimated the usual production time for such a device and brought the material costs down to around $0.50.

In a world where the usual cost of building such a prototype would be comparatively huge and turnaround time could take anything from weeks to months, the team’s proof-of-concept has the potential to change the manufacturing world. The linear motor they fabricated, which operates in a straight line rather than spinning like a car engine’s, is primarily used in automation and manufacturing. It’s hard to fathom the scope of impact if factories floors were someday able to print out complex replacement parts rather than be at the whim of a sluggish global supply chain.

While the linear motor is a far cry from the complexity of a V12 engine, the MIT team’s development is unquestionably a significant baby step in that direction. We’re clearly still a ways off from being able to download and slice 2026RangeRover.stl files, but you might be surprised to learn that there are already hobbyists successfully 3D-printing parts and even entire cars, one piece at a time.

Big Auto may want to get a head start on brainstorming their own PSAs while there’s still time.

  • The AI trend “create a caricature using everything you know about me” may open doors to digital fraud—Kaspersky

    [ad_1]

Kaspersky warns that sharing personal context with these tools can facilitate identity impersonation and social engineering attacks.

A new trend has gone viral on social media: users share a personal photo and ask Artificial Intelligence tools to create a caricature or illustration based on their life, their job, and “everything the AI knows” about them. The result showing animated versions of the person at the office, with their family, or representing their profession has become frequent content on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

While the trend may seem creative and entertaining, cybersecurity specialists warn that this practice can expose personal information and enable the creation of personalized, large-scale fraudulent messages, a very real threat today.

According to Kaspersky experts, this type of request does not work like a simple visual filter. To achieve more accurate images, people allow AI tools to access all the information associated with their profiles without restrictions, since the instruction itself is embedded in the command “create a caricature about me and my job based on everything you know about me.” In addition to the reference photo, extra data such as company name, corporate logos, job title, city, daily routines, hobbies, and other family details are often included and used to create the trend.

Each of these data points is a key piece in building a detailed digital profile. By combining image, text, and context, habits, relationships, frequently visited places, and professional responsibilities, information is revealed that cybercriminals can exploit to craft more sophisticated scams. As a result, a fraud attempt that mentions where someone works, their job title, or even a family member becomes far more convincing. It increases the likelihood that the victim will trust it and share sensitive information or money, especially considering that in Latin America, nearly one in four users admit they do not know how to recognize a fake email or message, according to Kaspersky’s Digital Language study.

This type of carelessness is not isolated. According to the same Kaspersky study, 27% of users in Latin America admit they do not review the permissions requested by an application before installing it, either because the information is too extensive or because they simply do not pay attention.

In addition, when interacting with these platforms, users are not only sharing the final image. Depending on the service and its privacy policies, the original photo, the text or instructions written by the user, usage history, and certain technical data such as IP address, device, or interaction patterns may also be stored. Part of this information may be retained to operate the service, improve performance, or train Artificial Intelligence models, meaning the content does not necessarily disappear after the caricature is generated and may remain longer than users expect.

“The biggest risk is not the illustration itself, but everything people reveal to obtain it. When someone shares details about their work, their family, or their routine, they are unknowingly providing information that can be used for highly targeted fraud or identity impersonation,” says Leandro Cuozzo, security analyst from Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team in Latin America. “In this context, the cumulative exposure of personal data can become a gateway to social engineering attacks, identity theft, or personalized scams.”

While these tools can be a fun way to experiment with digital creativity, experts recommend adopting more cautious habits when engaging with this trend. To reduce risks, Kaspersky experts recommend:

    • Avoid entering identifiable data in prompts, such as full name, job title, company, city, address, schedules, or routines—even if it seems “just to personalize” the image.
    • Do not upload photos that show logos, credentials, documents, license plates, screens, building façades, or any element that could help locate you or associate you with an organization.
    • Do not share information or images of minors, nor reveal family details that could be used to impersonate close contacts or design emotional scams.
    • Review the platform’s privacy policy and permissions before using it, especially regarding content retention and the use of data for training or service improvements.
    • Complement caution with active digital protection: solutions such as Kaspersky Premium help reduce risks from malicious links, dangerous downloads, and phishing techniques associated with these trends, while reinforcing the security of the devices used to create and share this content.

  • Epson ColorWorks C4050 empowers small businesses with on-demand color labeling

    [ad_1]

Epson ColorWorks C4050 is a compact, on-demand color label printer designed for the everyday hustle. Need new labels for a weekend special? A limited-run scent? A fresh compliance update? The C4050 prints beautifully vibrant, professional-looking labels the moment you need them — no long waits, no bulk orders.

Running a small business often feels like juggling a dozen things at once — new products to launch, prices to update, and labels that somehow never match what’s on today’s menu or inventory list. Pre-printed labels can’t keep up, but on-demand color printing can — giving owners the freedom to print only what they need and change things as fast as they grow.

As businesses expand their offerings, labeling becomes more than a finishing touch. It’s how customers learn what’s inside the jar, bottle, box, or package — and it’s often the very first impression. But minimum order quantities, storage limitations, and outdated label stock can slow things down. Small businesses deserve tools that work at their pace, not the other way around.

That’s where Epson’s decades of experience come in. With more than 50 years of trusted printing innovation, Epson engineers tools built for real people running real businesses — tools that are reliable, easy to use, and flexible enough to grow alongside them.

Because it prints in vivid colors, the ColorWorks C4050 helps brands stand out instantly. Bright graphics, clear text, sharp barcodes, and color-coded details make it easier for customers to recognize your products and for teams to quickly sort and organize items.

Best of all, it’s made for small workspaces. The ColorWorks C4050 fits easily on busy counters. Additionally, an optional Wi-Fi lets you print from virtually any device. A 2.7-inch color LCD screen makes operation simple with quick access to ink status, previews, and job controls.

Its UltraChrome DL pigment inks keep labels looking crisp and professional even after handling, refrigeration, or exposure to moisture. They’re fast-drying, fade-resistant, and smudge-proof — ideal for food, cosmetics, healthcare items, and anything that needs to stay readable over time. Meanwhile, Epson’s auto-maintenance features ensure print quality remains consistent without constant upkeep.

The ColorWorks C4050 is built for versatility. Whether you’re printing on glossy, matte, synthetic, or continuous labels, it adapts easily. That means one device can support multiple product lines, packaging types, or seasonal collections.

From cafés and home-based food sellers to online shops, small manufacturers, and boutique brands, businesses across industries can use the ColorWorks C4050 to keep their operations flexible and their branding polished.

“Small businesses operate in environments where change is constant,” said Masako Kusama, president and director of Epson Philippines Corporation (EPC). “With the ColorWorks C4050, we’re giving them the power to adjust quickly, look professional, and stay in control of their production — no matter where they are in their growth journey.”

Epson’s long-standing philosophy of efficient, compact, and precise design shines through in the ColorWorks C4050. It’s a tool that supports sustainability by helping businesses print only what they need, reduce waste, and avoid overproduction — all while keeping operations running smoothly.

At its core, the ColorWorks C4050 isn’t just another device. It’s a simple, powerful way for small businesses to stay nimble, stay creative, and stay ready for whatever comes next.

  • Powerhouse Tools strengthens support system for franchise owners

    [ad_1]

Powerhouse Tools opened its newest branch in Monumento, Caloocan City, on February 21, 2026. The milestone signals the brand’s approach to expansion in 2026: strengthening its support system for franchise owners through operational guidance and reliable infrastructure.

The company launched its franchise model in 2021. As the franchise network matures, the brand has shifted its focus from expansion to deepening support for existing and new franchise partners—enabling them to build businesses grounded in proven processes. Andrew Jason Go, a construction professional with no prior retail experience, represents the kind of entrepreneur the Powerhouse system was built to support.

Franchising appealed to the store owner because it provided structure, whereas independent entrepreneurship often requires costly trial and error. What set Powerhouse Tools apart from other franchise options was the depth of its operational framework, from product selection and supplier relationships to store layout and pricing strategy.

“Powerhouse Tools stood out because it wasn’t just selling products—it was selling a system,” Andrew Go explained. “Even without formal retail experience, I saw how structured the operations were. It was clearly built for Filipino entrepreneurs who want a real, sustainable business—not just a logo.”

The franchise system addresses barriers that often derail new businesses, including a lack of supplier access, inconsistent processes, and operational discipline. By providing standardized systems and established supplier networks, Powerhouse Tools allows franchisees to focus on growing their businesses rather than navigating avoidable mistakes.

    Powerhouse Tools

For the Monumento branch, with its high-traffic environment and strong concentration of contractors, builders, and homeowners, success will depend on efficiency, inventory management, and service quality. The franchisee aims to provide a well-organized hardware store that local tradespeople and residents could trust.

“I hope it becomes a go-to partner for builders and homeowners alike—a place where people feel confident buying what they need because they know it works,” the franchisee said. “Beyond sales, I want it to be a dependable part of the community that supports local livelihoods and small projects.”

As Powerhouse Tools enters 2026, it continues to refine its support infrastructure to ensure that franchise owners have the tools, training, and guidance necessary to operate in their markets. The Monumento branch reflects the brand’s belief that sustainable growth is built on strong partnerships—and that real success means standing beside franchisees as they build businesses that serve their communities.

  • Pag-IBIG backs precast housing with Megawide, targets over 7,000 units in two years

    [ad_1]

Pag-IBIG Fund highlighted the role of public-private partnerships and modern construction technology in accelerating socialized housing delivery as officials joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in the ceremonial launch of a precast manufacturing facility in Taytay, Rizal on February 16, 2026.

The facility, operated by Megawide Construction Corporation, will produce precast housing components for Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program (Expanded 4PH) developments financed by Pag-IBIG Fund, enabling faster construction of quality socialized housing units within reach of many Filipino families.

The launch, held in line with the anniversary of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, showcased how industrialized construction methods can help deliver more homes faster under the Marcos administration’s flagship housing program.

“In line with President Marcos’ directive to expand access to affordable, decent housing, we are pushing modern construction methods like precast so we can deliver safe, quality homes faster for Filipino families,” said Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling, who also chairs the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees. “By speeding up housing delivery, we not only provide more Filipinos with homes, but we also help create jobs, sustain construction activity, and stimulate the economy.”

During the tour, the President and housing agency officials viewed the precast production line and housing components being manufactured for Expanded 4PH projects. Precast construction allows major building elements such as walls, slabs, beams and columns to be produced simultaneously in a controlled plant environment, helping improve quality checks and shorten construction schedules at the project site.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta said that, consistent with the agency’s mandate, it provides long-term housing finance that helps stimulate the housing industry, including support for projects that enable developers to adopt faster, more efficient building methods while keeping home loan payments within reach of its members.

“Today, we witnessed a major step forward in strengthening socialized housing through the adoption of modern construction technology,” Acosta said. “In line with our mandate to provide sustainable financing for the country’s housing industry, we support projects like this to speed up construction, improve efficiency, and deliver quality homes that remain affordable for Filipino families.”

“Through our partnership with Megawide Construction Corporation, we expect to build more than 7,000 housing units in just two years—or even sooner—while ensuring strong returns that help protect and grow our members’ savings,” she added.

Pag-IBIG Fund said it invested PHP10 billion in Megawide preferred shares in 2025 to support the construction of 7,143 housing units in medium-rise residential developments under the Expanded 4PH in Cavite, with a robust 9% annual return intended to help sustain competitive dividends for its members’ savings.

The agency has also approved PHP27.12 billion in various housing development financing, of which PHP8.5 billion has been released. This is expected to support the construction of 21,022 socialized housing units, further advancing housing delivery under the Expanded 4PH Program.

In 2025, Pag-IBIG Fund released a record PHP140.54 billion in housing loans, benefiting 90,727 Filipino workers who secured new homes or improved their current homes, as the Expanded 4PH continues to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing nationwide.

GameZone transforms classic Pinoy games by introducing automated processes and digital functionality. This modern adaptation streamlines gameplay while remaining accessible on any device, creating an enjoyable and secure platform for all users.

Tongits: Competitive Pinoy Card Game with Tactical Depth

    Gameplay Overview:
Tongits features three players who aim to form sets and runs by arranging cards from a standard 52-card deck. By reducing deadwood or unmatched cards at the end of the round, players position themselves for potential wins. The turn-based draw and discard system brings calculated strategy into every move.

    Formats:

    • Three-player tables
    • Standard card deck
    • Turn-based progression

    Tips for Tongits:
Observing discarded cards helps in tracking opponents’ strategies and predicting their potential sets or runs. Discarding high-value cards as rounds approach their conclusion mitigates losses. The strategic use of “Draw” benefits players who suspect their deadwood count is lower than their competitors.

Pusoy: A Strategic Pinoy Card Game Based on Hand Arrangement

    Gameplay Overview:
In Pusoy, participants receive 13 cards and must arrange them into three hands: front (strongest three cards), middle (medium strength five cards), and back (weakest five cards). Arrievements depend on hand rankings placed in descending order of strength.

    Formats:

    • 2-4-player competitions
    • Simultaneous hand organization
    • Automated ranking systems

    Tips for Pusoy:
Balancing card strength across all hands prevents major losses when arrangements are revealed. Overloading one hand at the expense of others creates vulnerabilities during rounds. Familiarity with hand combinations and rankings prior to gameplay elevates decision-making effectiveness.

Pusoy Dos: Fast-Paced Gameplay with High Awareness

    Gameplay Overview:
Pusoy Dos revolves around shedding cards strategically to be the first player with no cards left. The player holding the lowest-ranked card triggers the first move, leading sequential rounds of combinations like pairs, straights, and flushes.

    Formats:

    • 2-4 players per session
    • Combination-focused play mechanics
    • Sequential round structure

    Tips for Pusoy Dos:
Maintaining early tempo through strong combinations asserts control over game pacing. High-value cards should be reserved for endgame moments to secure a strategic advantage. Observing cards played throughout ensures informed final moves.

Lucky 9: Simplicity and Quick Rounds

    Gameplay Overview:
Lucky 9 operates similarly to baccarat with the goal of achieving a hand value closest to nine. The player-versus-banker system keeps rounds fast and efficient, while card values follow straightforward scoring principles.

    Formats:

    • Player vs Banker structure
    • Automated correctness of card values
    • Brief round durations

    Tips for Lucky 9:
Learning card value calculations establishes a foundation for placing accurate wager. Consistent bankroll strategies prevent impulsive wagers rooted in emotional reactions. Lucky 9’s straightforward gameplay appeals to players preferring simpler table game formats.

    Baccarat: The International Industry Standard

    Gameplay Overview:
Baccarat allows players to wager on three options: player, banker, or tie, with wins dependent on reaching hand values closest to nine. Fast rounds powered by automated dealing mechanisms keep match progression consistent while a digital scoreboard tracks results.

    Formats:

    • Straightforward wagerting: player vs banker vs tie
    • Rapid gameplay progression
    • Digital tracking and scoring

    Tips for Baccarat:
Sticking to pre-planned wagerting strategies avoids unnecessary attempts at chasing gambling patterns. Familiarity with house-edge variations wagerween wagerting options enables smarter wager placements. Baccarat’s global reputation elevates player expectations, reinforced by the digital convenience of GameZone versions.

Blackjack: Structured Gameplay With Skill-Based Strategy

    Gameplay Overview:
Blackjack tasks players with building the strongest hand totaling up to 21 without exceeding that number. Participants compete directly against the dealer, utilizing options such as Hit, Stand, or Double during their turns.

    Formats:

    • Player vs Dealer engagements
    • Flexible actions for strategic card management
    • Non-applicable card counting due to automation

    Tips for Blackjack:
Basic blackjack strategy charts should guide gameplay decisions, helping players avoid excessive actions on strong hands. Uncertainty calls for conservative gameplay rather than overly risky choices. Among table games, blackjack remains one of the few where skill significantly influences outcomes.

  • NASA’s crewed Artemis II launch gets pushed back again, this time due to a helium issue

    [ad_1]

It looks like a March launch is no longer in the cards for Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed trip to the moon’s vicinity since the final Apollo mission over 50 years ago. While preparations were underway at the Kennedy Space Center for a launch as soon as March 6, the space agency says it ran into an issue with the flow of helium to its SLS rocket’s upper stage this weekend and it now has to roll the rocket from the launch pad back to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to figure out what’s wrong and fix it. A media briefing is planned for sometime this week to discuss the problem and what’s next.

But in a post on X, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman confirmed the rollback will “take the March launch window out of consideration.” NASA noted on its blog that the current effort “potentially preserves the April launch window, pending the outcome of data findings, repair efforts, and how the schedule comes to fruition in the coming days and weeks.” It’s a four-mile trip back to the VAB that will take hours to carefully transport the massive rocket and the Orion spacecraft. NASA says it’s eyeing February 24 for this trek.

The issue occurred overnight in the early hours of February 21, when NASA says it observed “interrupted flow of helium to the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion stage.” The space agency explained:

The upper stage uses helium to maintain the proper environmental conditions for the stage’s engine and to pressurize liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellant tanks. The systems worked during NASA’s Artemis II wet dress rehearsals, but teams were not able to properly flow helium during normal operations and reconfigurations following the wet dress rehearsal that concluded Feb. 19. Operators are using a backup method to maintain the environmental conditions for the upper stage engines and the rocket, which remains in a safe configuration.

The Artemis II crew — Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, Mission Specialist — had just entered quarantine a day before the issue arose. NASA says the astronauts have since come out of quarantine.

At the start of this year, NASA announced an accelerated timeline for Artemis II, which was previously set for April 2026 after experiencing delays in 2024. For this 10-day mission, which will be the first crewed flight of the SLS rocket, the Artemis II astronauts will take a trip around the moon in the Orion spacecraft. While it initially targeted early February, the launch was pushed to March due to issues that popped up during the wet dress rehearsal. Now, we’re back to the beginning with a possible April launch, but that’ll depend on the fix being a quick one.

  • AWS Outages Caused By AI Agent Errors: Kiro Deletes Critical Systems

    [ad_1]

Amazon has confirmed that configuration errors involving AI tools led to at least two significant disruptions within its Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. The most severe incident resulted in a 13-hour outage after an autonomous AI agent deleted and attempted to recreate a production environment.

The primary failure involved Kiro, a generative AI coding assistant launched in July 2025. According to internal reports, the agent autonomously determined that the most efficient way to complete an assigned task was to perform a total deletion of the software environment. This action severely impacted the AWS Cost Explorer service in mainland China regions, preventing customers from managing their cloud expenses.

AWS maintained that the technology’s autonomy was not the root cause. Instead, the company pointed to a permissions configuration error. A monitoring engineer reportedly granted Kiro administrative access without requiring peer review, allowing the deletion command to execute without human intervention.

    Broader Implications and Industry Trends

This event is not isolated. Sources indicate that the Amazon Q Developer chatbot was also involved in a recent internal service interruption. While Amazon officially classifies these events as “user errors,” the incidents have sparked skepticism among developers regarding the company’s internal goal of achieving 80% AI adoption for weekly tasks.

The push toward autonomous coding is an industry-wide trend, with Microsoft reporting that approximately 30% of its code is now AI-generated and NVIDIA also mandating the use of similar AI tools for its 30,000 engineers.

In response to the outages, Amazon has implemented mandatory safeguards, including specialized training and the requirement of human authorization for modifications to critical production resources. The incidents highlight a shift in cloud infrastructure risks, where the primary concern is no longer just AI “hallucinations,” but the execution logic of autonomous agents operating without redundant supervision.

  • Sam Altman: Know What Else Used a Lot of Energy? Human Civilization

    [ad_1]

At last week’s India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, industry leaders convened to discuss the future of artificial intelligence and how best to squeeze it into parts of your life you haven’t even considered. Notably absent was Bill Gates, who dropped out hours before his scheduled keynote over the ongoing scrutiny about his presence in the Epstein Files (though he continues to deny any wrongdoing). While the convention was reportedly a bit chaotic, what with the protests and all, the luminaries from around the tech world present nonetheless kept things upbeat and optimistic, declaring “full steam ahead” on the technological hype train carrying our species and planet off a cliff.

Also in attendance was OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who earned numerous headlines over the course of the event for his words and antics. His buzz blitzkrieg started on Thursday at a seemingly easy photo-opp layup with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other AI executives all raising their joined hands in a celebratory display of industry-wide solidarity. Altman and the former colleague and present CEO of Anthropic to his left, Dario Amodei, notably refused to complete the chain and hold each other’s hands, making for an all-too-poignant moment. Altman would continue to make news throughout the summit for his comments on the industry’s “urgent” need for global regulation and his sneaking suspicion that companies might actually be using AI as a scapegoat to whitewash their layoffs.

Ever the yapper, Altman has bagged yet another round of earned media for an interview with The Indian Express’ Anant Goenka, during which he posited some controversial rebuttals to concerns about AI’s environmental impact.

Altman started off by saying the claims about ChatGPT consuming “‘17 gallons of water for each query’ or whatever,” are “completely untrue, totally insane, no connection to reality,” before qualifying that, OK, maybe it was a valid concern when his company “used to do evaporative cooling in data centers.”

He went on to say that there is “fair” concern about the amount of energy data centers eat to crank out the most soulless slop you’ve ever seen, but suggested the onus of responsibility for dealing with AI’s ravenous appetite falls to the energy sector itself, which Altman feels needs to “move towards nuclear or wind and solar very quickly.”

Altman then stunned the crowd and firmly re-entered the discourse with a mind-blowing truth bomb for those who still felt AI was consuming too much energy.

“It also takes a lot of energy to train a human,” Altman rejoined euphorically. “It takes like 20 years of life, and all the food you eat before that time, before you get smart. And not only that, it took like the very widespread evolution of the hundred billion people that have ever lived and learned not to get eaten by predators and learned how to figure out science and whatever to produce you, and then you took whatever you took.”

It is true that every person and the sum total of human civilization have consumed a sizable amount of energy (and water) to get to where we are today. While the value comparison of a nascent tech industry and its models to the entirety of civilization and human beings may have elicited adulation at the summit, Altman got an icier reception from the internet. Social media quickly took to roasting the remarks as “dystopian” and “deeply antisocial and antihuman.”

Perhaps further illuminating the backlash, Altman’s energy comments butt up against the frustrating lack of transparency within the industry our collective futures now hinge upon. There are currently no regulations in place requiring data centers to disclose their water and energy consumption. Furthermore, center employees and business partners are typically muzzled by nondisclosure agreements. This has made reporting and research on the true expenditure levels a tricky figure to pin down.

At least we’ve got Sam to keep us informed while waiting for some clarity about what’s actually going on and being used in those centers.

  • Colorado is working on a bill that would make it illegal to 3D print firearms and gun parts

    [ad_1]

A collective of Colorado lawmakers wants to put an end to “ghost guns” and their rising popularity. Earlier this week, the state’s House Judiciary Committee voted in a 7-4 majority to pass the bill, HB26-1144, along for a decision with the full House of Representatives. The proposed law would “prohibit the use of a three-dimensional printer, or similar technology, to make a firearm or a firearm component.”

Ghost guns are typically made from 3D printers or similar machines without serial numbers, making them virtually impossible to trace and allowing users to skirt the federal requirements for purchasing a firearm. While the bill targets using a 3D printer to make guns, large-capacity magazines and other related components, it even bans possessing and distributing the instructions to manufacture guns in this way. However, these rules would be exempt for federally licensed firearm manufacturers.

“These ghost guns are increasingly found at crime scenes, making it harder for law enforcement to track down a suspect because the gun isn’t traceable,” the bill’s sponsor, Lindsay Gilchrist, said in a press release.

Prior to this proposal, Colorado passed a law in 2023 that banned owning ghost guns or making frames for them. While SB23-279 laid the groundwork, HB26-1144 can be seen as the next step since it’s much more encompassing by targeting ghost guns even before they’re made. According to the bill, first-time violations will be treated as a misdemeanor, while repeat offenses will be upgraded to a felony charge. Looking ahead, HB26-1144 still has to secure a vote from both the Colorado Senate and House of Representatives before being delivered to the governor to be signed into law.

  • Samsung is adding Perplexity to Galaxy AI for its upcoming S26 series

    [ad_1]

Samsung’s next flagship devices will offer Perplexity as part of an expansion to support multiple AI agents in Galaxy AI. Perplexity’s AI agent will work with apps including Samsung Notes, Clock, Gallery, Reminder and Calendar, according to the announcement. And, some third-party apps will support it, though Samsung hasn’t yet said which. The news comes just a few days before Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, so we can expect to find out more about that integration and how it fits in with Samsung’s revamped Bixby very soon.

What we know so far is that the Perplexity agent will respond to the wake phrase, “Hey Plex” (not to be confused with the streaming service Plex). It can also be initiated by quick-access physical controls. In a statement, Samsung’s Won-Joon Choi, President, COO and Head of the R&D Office for Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, said the expansion of Galaxy AI is aimed at giving users more choice and flexibility in getting their tasks done. “Galaxy AI acts as an orchestrator, bringing together different forms of AI into a single, natural, cohesive experience,” Choi said.

Samsung previously announced a partnership with Perplexity last year to integrate the company’s AI search engine into Samsung TVs.  Perplexity has been in hot water though over alleged content scraping and copyright infringement, and was even sued in September by Merriam-Webster — yes, the dictionary — and Encyclopedia Britannica.

  • Trump’s FCC Chair Wants Networks to Run Nationalistic Content and Pledge Loyalty for America’s Big Bday

    [ad_1]

Until now, current chair of the Federal Communications Commission Brendan Carr has mostly been in the news for his role in weaponizing the FCC to serve the aims of this administration.  In December, he testified to Congress that his office is, erm, actually “not formally an independent agency,” right before removing the word “independent” from the mission statement on the agency’s website. More recently, he continued his tradition of threatening late-night hosts by again harassing CBS about Colbert and desperately trying to make enforcement of the “equal-time rule” a cudgel worth fearing.

But Carr’s not always playing the heel. He wants you to know he’s got a fun side too and is showing that off by helping to plan what is sure to be this summer’s most legendary party. In a statement on Friday, he let his (proverbial) hair down and offered broadcasters strongly worded suggestions about what gifts the nation (and President) would most like to receive in commemoration of the “big 2-5-0.”

“As America’s 250th anniversary approaches, it is important to reflect on the ideals and events that have defined our past while keeping an eye towards our country’s bright future,” said Carr. “I am calling on broadcasters to pledge to provide programming that promotes civic education, national pride, and our shared history.” Who among us doesn’t want more civic education?

Demonstrating exactly why he’s a Tier 1 operator in President Trump’s Salute to America 250 Task Force, Carr went on to provide numerous suggestions for how networks could best hug the flag on this most momentous of occasions.

According to Carr, they could air “PSAs, short segments, or full specials specifically promoting civic education, inspiring local stories, and American history.” Ooh. Remember VH1’s Pop-Up Video? What about something like that for “daily ‘Today in American History’ announcements highlighting significant events that took place on that day in history? Or how about shoehorning in a highlight of one of our lovely National Parks “during regular news programming?” Would it be coherent? Maybe. Patriotic? Absolutely. And would it kill you guys to get back to starting each broadcast day with the ‘Star Spangled Banner?’” Heck, he’d even settle for the Pledge of Allegiance. Carr’s just that chill a dude.

But when Carr passes you the aux on July 4th, he doesn’t wanna hear none of that pinko Bad Bunny or Billie Eilish ish you usually play. This semiquincentennial bash is only bumping bangers by American OGs. I’m talking Gershwin, Copland, Ellington. And if you really wanna see Carr get sturdy with it, hit ‘im with the John Philip Sousa.

Carr closed out his statement by asking those networks down to patriotically clown on Independence Day to swear their fealty and commitment to the above requests by joining his Pledge America Campaign. Carr said he looks forward to broadcasters “taking the Pledge and fulfilling their public interest mandate” before noting that this is all completely voluntary, of course.

Time will tell what amazing displays of jingoism await us this summer. But it America’s birthday is anything like that lit parade they had last year to the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary—brought to you by Coinbase—we’re all in for an unforgettable experience.

  • ‘Face/Off 2’ Director Adam Wingard is Now/Gone

    [ad_1]

Do you remember when it was announced a Face/Off sequel was in development? If so, you’ll be displeased to hear the sequel’s hit a snag after its director dropped out.

First reported by Collider earlier this week, Adam Wingard has left the project he was co-writing with Simon Barrett. No particular reason was given for his leave, but Collider noted he was first attached to the project since its official announcement, and even hyped it up during the press run for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024. With this sequel now off his plate, Wingard’s focused on his upcoming A24 film Onslaught. It’s unclear how his leave affects Barrett, who he’s worked with on various films, Onslaught and New Empire included.

After Wingard was first attached to Face/Off 2, returning star Nicholas Cage indicated it’d be a face-swapping feast. Not only would he and John Travolta change faces again, so would the now-grown versions of their kids from the original film. “It becomes three-dimensional chess,” said Cage in 2023. “It’s four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex.” With new creative voices now able to take over, hopefully that part of the film stays in the changeover. It sounds amazingly dumb, and way too good of a premise to lose.

We’ll have more on Face/Off 2 as news emerges.
