    I Don’t Have TikTok, But I Watch It Every Week With My Daughter

    I haven’t downloaded the TikTok app, but watching it is one of my favorite times of the week. Our teenage daughter and I watch her favorite TikTok videos from her phone at the kitchen table every weekend.  

    During the week, our daughter curates the best TikTok videos for us to watch together for thirty minutes to an hour on Sunday afternoons. She saves them to a dedicated TikTok folder during her allowed weekly screen time.

    My daughter has to ask us for TikTok time

    My husband and I manage her access to time-consuming apps. If she wants TikTok, then she must ask for it. We receive “more screen time” requests throughout the day. Often, she sends compelling texts about completed homework and finished chores.

    Sometimes, she rapidly fires her request until we respond with an offer of a time increment or a denial of additional time. When she is with friends and her time requests remain unnoticed, she calls us in a lowered voice to check our texts.

    Most of the videos she compiles center around old dogs and elderly people. She advises me when I will need tissues to watch some of them. I whine that I don’t want to cry, but we both end up in tears anyway.

    The puppy-to-old-dog transition videos always make us tear up. Our 15-year-old rescue dog often whimpers with empathy as we watch the videos. I pick her up to soothe her as she nuzzles to do the same. 

    Our daughter shares videos of grandparents’ birthday celebrations. She tearily explains how they remind her of Grams and Papa. I shed tears, knowing that her memories of my parents would comfort her someday.  

    To cheer us up, she shows bucket list travel videos. The TikTok videos showcase beautiful vistas, flower-lined streets, sprawling coasts, mesmerizing gardens, and white sand beaches. We fantasize about Santorini, Lake Como, Sicily, and Capri.

    Some of our favorite videos reveal over-the-top wedding weekends, from French lace wedding dresses to lush imperial tables. Most of the candlelit receptions are on countryside estates overlooking endless Tuscan vineyards. 

    We watch popular dance videos that unknowingly showcase bands from my college years. Afterward, I often play U2, Sarah McLachlan, and Erasure on our kitchen Alexa. She then plays the latest Taylor Swift and some eighties’ Hall and Oates.

    Her videos often reveal whirlwind dream jobs. They are day-in-the-life videos of women working in big cities. We watch in awe as the early morning coffee stop rapidly progresses to a tabletop toast at the busy night’s end.  

    She skips over the saved videos on must-have makeup, splurge-worthy products, recipe hacks, and the latest fashion. Sometimes, she uses those videos for wish lists and gift planning. I have TikTok to thank for my last birthday gift.

    Some of the most unexpected videos relate to childrearing. They show moms and dads up all night with colicky babies. Her eyes widen as she wonders how new parents manage the first weeks with their sanity intact. 

    The TikTok algorithm knows what we like to watch

    I share stories of sleepless nights with her sister. Born five and a half weeks early, she would fall asleep while feeding and then wake up hungry ten minutes later. We laugh that I checked on her every hour the first time she finally slept through the night at six months.

    She often relates that TikTok seems to know our tastes. She tells me I will love her latest file of video favorites. I smile, knowing that the algorithm has learned what appeals to both of us by monitoring what she and, sometimes, we watch thoroughly or repeatedly.

    As parents, we know that screen time can be all-encompassing and isolating. Once a week, we sit side by side as TikTok connects our past and present. By watching her saved videos together, we positively influence next week’s app experience one quick video at a time. 

    I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    When my daughter was little, I told numerous white lies: Chuck E Cheese is closed on Saturdays, the music means Mister Softee is out of ice cream, your fortune cookie says, “Be nice to your little brother.” 

    “Again?” she’d ask. 

    “Again,” I’d say. 

    I’d turn off the news when she entered the room and tell her, “They just said it’s time for bed.”

    My daughter convinced herself that we, her parents, could keep her safe

    But the lie she made up herself, was the one she believed most fiercely, that her parents could protect her from anything. These words are the longing of all parents everywhere and maybe that is why we have such difficulty accepting they can never be true. 

    It was easier to pretend for the first 10 years of our daughter’s life, when she was terrified of strangers and the dark, and always wanted to be next to us. If only we could return to those childhood fears. 

    As a baby, my daughter would cry when someone unfamiliar came too close to her stroller. As a toddler, every nursery school drop off was an epic saga. In preschool she carefully observed each student but didn’t speak to anyone for the first several months. 

    That pattern continued throughout elementary school when she had trouble making new friends and my husband and I just wanted a few hours to ourselves.

    My daughter needed to know we were nearby to feel secure

    In her college essay my daughter was finally able to articulate the attachment, “I needed that comforting feeling, knowing my parents were nearby, able to help whenever I needed, there to protect me from anything.”

    But we couldn’t. 

    No one can.

    There was a helpless feeling as I watched that realization dawn on her during adolescence, even though there is no other choice besides growing up.

    (No wonder Peter Pan refused.) 

    Her grandmother died when she was 10.

    By middle school my daughter was commuting to Manhattan on crowded subway cars, sometimes witnessing aggressive begging or the distress of the mentally ill. When she was 11, we got her a cell phone meant for safety, but likely opening a Pandora’s Box of the world’s evils, despite every single parental control.

    She gained independence, but also knowledge of the world

    Those were the years when she gained the independence every teen longs for: rushing out of the house early to meet friends before school, coming home late and having sleepovers every weekend. 

    Those were the same years she barely spoke to her dad or me, and we no longer wanted those hours to ourselves. 

    It was all messy, painful, yet meant to be.

    We only have children to let them go.

    She has pulled back the curtain and realized we are just people

    Now that she is a senior in high school and fully aware of current events, I often feel like the Wizard of Oz as Toto pulls back the curtain. Dorothy begs him to keep his promises, but it turns out he is not great and powerful, just an ordinary man who tried to maintain the illusion of a beautiful, magical world.

    The less time she spends at home the more I want what she once did: that comforting feeling, knowing my daughter is nearby.

    We spent last summer with cousins in Israel, this fall there are very few words left. My daughter is well past the years when she believed I had superpowers, or even that anything I said was helpful or made sense.

    But if she would listen one more time, the way she did when she was a child, I’d say this: It’s true. I cannot protect you from this world, no one can, but I can love you more than anyone. And I do. And I did.

    But as an adult, I absolutely loved it also. It’s just a view you don’t usually get and Phil was a great bike rider (even though he didn’t let me try to ride the bike, ya know, insurance and all that!). 

    I also loved it because it’s literally your own private tour. You aren’t squished in anywhere with strangers. You’re squished in with your loved ones and nice and snuggly while stopping to see all the cool stuff around town during the holidays.

    I love getting free food. (Who doesn’t?) The other week I was lucky, because after a local charity organization finished giving out the food they brought to the recipients, anyone was able to come take what they wanted, and my friend Ewa let me know that they had some great stuff. I’m so grateful that I have a car that going to pick up things is not even a question, it’s just an extra 10 minutes out of my time to get a lot of great stuff.

    They had a lot, and I mean a LOT, of quark cheese. It’s this soft cheese that I guess you can compare to Greek yogurt, both in terms of taste and texture, but not quite. I’m honestly not the biggest fan of it (in addition to it bothering my stomach) but my kids enjoy it somewhat. But in my opinion, the best way of all is using it in other recipes, which my kids do enjoy, so I got some. These were not sold in their usual tubs, and instead were sold in bags of 1.5 kg, which was a lot. I decided to take 3 of them.

    They had a lot, and I mean a lot, of avocados. Some were mushy and gross, but many were perfectly ripe, and if left at all, would become overripe and gross. So I knew that I could take as many avocadoes as I could either use within 2 days or figure out a way to process them to stop them from ripening.

    I grabbed some apples, onions, hot peppers, and a few sweeties as well, and brought them home to see what I could do with them.

    I decided to challenge myself to see how many things I could do with what I brought home before it goes off, knowing that I had a lot of foods that were more on their last legs.

    First of all, I made sure to wash all the produce I brought home and dry them very well, because they were touching spoiled produce (which is why they were free) and I wanted to get rid of any germs that might speed up spoilage. 

    Already that night I used some of the quark cheese to make a crustless cheesecake for my kids. I have no idea how it tasted because it was with gluten and eggs, but the kids seemed to appreciate it, even if it didn’t come out perfectly.

    I mixed the quark cheese with tomato sauce, spices, grated cheese, pasta, and water, and baked it together for an easy baked “ziti”. (I didn’t use ziti pasta.) (I slightly overcooked it. Oh well. Will do better next time.)

    I took some avocadoes that were ripe bordering on overripe, mashed them up, and froze them to make guacamole in the future. I put them in ziplock bags and divided them into two when freezing so I can remove just part at a time instead of defrosting it all at once.

    I took some of the hot peppers and boiled them up, the blended them with other ingredients to make homemade sriracha, using this as the base but obviously with changes since it was with fresh hot peppers instead of dried. 

    I used some of this sriracha to make spicy mayo.

    I made poke bowls using the avocado as one of the ingredients and used the spicy mayo as one of the sauces. 

    I slightly watered down the quark cheese and used that as the base in pancakes, which my kids loved and said it tasted even better than regular pancakes. (It took a few tries to get the texture correct because the thickness of the quark cheese made it hard to tell how much flour was in the mixture, but I played around with it after the first batch, and then it worked out great.

    I think I did alright.

    Sheriauna Haase won bronze medals in the women’s 100 and 200 metre races at the Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile in November. Sheriauna, 17, was born without her left hand. She only began training for the games about a year ago, as she attends a Toronto high school for musical theatre, where she studies dancing and acting. This summer she played Adele in the ninth season of The Next Step. We spoke about her passions and growing up with a limb difference.

    BLOOM: I know you’ve been dancing forever. When did you get interested in running?

    Sheriauna Haase: I started in elementary school and joined a club, but it wasn’t something I was focused on 100 per cent. I was close to quitting when the opportunity came, and I found the right coach and the right environment and said ‘Okay, I’m ready to do this.’

    BLOOM: What do you love about running?

    Sheriauna Haase: Running is very straightforward and black and white. I run really fast. I like seeing the improvements that you get from training, and when you go to a competition you see all the work you did paid off.

    When I dance I feel like I’m in my own world and I can do whatever I want in it. I feel there’s so much room to grow in dance, no matter what level you’re at. Dancing is a feeling of moving around and letting your body do what it wants to do.

    BLOOM: What was it like to wrap yourself in the Canadian flag, knowing you’d won two medals for Canada?

    Sheriauna Haase: Honestly, I was doing what I needed to do, and taking pictures with the flag. It didn’t hit until a bit after when you’re going back to the village or back home and you really understand that you just represented Canada, a whole country, while running. I felt so honoured and so grateful that God gave me this opportunity to run for my country.

    BLOOM: How did you train for the games while going to school?

    Sheiauna Haase: My coach was very supportive and he knows that dance and acting are a big part of my life, so he really bent the schedule of when I train. Last season I was doing two days a week, and now I’m doing three days a week. I train three days a week and dance three days a week and Sunday is my only day off.

    BLOOM: What was it like to compete with other athletes with limb differences?

    Sheriauna Haase: It feels fair. Everybody has a similar disability to you, so you’re actually keeping up with these people, and that’s not something that every para athlete has experienced when they always run with able-bodied people. We all had the same disability so we were all impacted in the same way.

    BLOOM: What’s been the greatest challenge growing up with a limb difference?

    Sheriauna Haase: I’d say people being curious, and sometimes in the wrong ways, and hearing ‘You can’t’ a lot. Always having the mental battle within myself of being comfortable in my own skin and not letting the voices of other people in my own head.

    BLOOM: When do you wear your prosthesis and when do you not?

    Sheriauna Haase: In most situations growing up I didn’t wear it, and I learned how to do things without it. But I wear it when I’m going somewhere, like an event, or if it’s ‘I feel like my arm today,’ I’m going to put it on. It makes me feel like my other arm is there and I can use it to help me.

    BLOOM: You seem very comfortable in your body. How did you gain that confidence?

    Sheiauna Haase: It was a lot of help from my family, especially my mom and dad, and a lot of mind strengthening. My mom always pushed affirmations, so I’d say daily affirmations like ‘I am beautiful,’ and ‘I am strong.’ She does this with my brothers every single morning as well. I think that’s something that’s good for all kids.

    I’m very grateful I got to find dancing when I was very little, because definitely having extra activities, and a good environment to do those things in, helps a lot. Now I get to go to school and do what I love, and I have other peers and friends with me that love the same things I do.

    There was also the blunt realization ‘This is my body. This is who I am. My body is not going to change. I can’t do anything that wouldn’t result in surgery, and obviously I don’t want to do that. This is just how I was made, and I have to be okay with that. I really can’t change it.’

    BLOOM: What role has Holland Bloorview played in your life? I know you’re an ambassador with us.

    Sheriauna Haase: They’ve played a huge role, and not only in providing my arms for me throughout the years. They helped me connect with other amputees and helped me make a difference in the world. They helped me be so much more confident in myself.

    When I hear Holland Bloorview I get so excited. One of my friends was volunteering there this past November and I was like ‘Oh my God. I love walking in there. It doesn’t even feel like a hospital. It feels like a second home.’

    BLOOM: For health professionals who work here, what kind of care do you value as a teenager?

    Sheriauna Haase: I really love the relationship I have with my prosthetist Neil. And Lisa also helps as well. I feel like I can talk to them about anything and it’s not only going there for my arm fitting, they ask about my life and vice versa. It’s very open and honest. They know how to talk to me now that I’m older, and they always ask me questions.

    BLOOM: I saw the video clip your mom posted of you introducing yourself to The Next Step fans. You play the role of Adele in this Canadian drama series about a studio of elite dancers.

    Sheriauna Haase: This is the ninth season of the show and for me to play that character and be in it is insane to me. I feel grateful that everyone on set was so supportive to the point that my disability wasn’t a big deal. When it needed to be it was, and they helped to make me feel comfortable and make me a person first.

    BLOOM: When did you start acting?

    Sheriauna Haase: I want to say three years ago I really got into it. I’ve always wanted to act. I really love that you can be different people—you can play different characters. I love how hard it is. Acting is not easy, but it’s so fulfilling at the end of the day. I love the experiences you have on set and I love the aspect of seeing yourself on the big screen.     Sheriauna Haase: I definitely want to go to the World Championships and the Paralympics, and to do a lot more acting and dancing. I’d like to make a name for myself and make myself happy with everything that I’m doing.

    Your Students Are Coming Home And It’s Going to Be OK – Really

    College moms and college dads, as your student’s first semester on campus draws to a close, I want to share in a little (admittedly one-sided) discussion with you. Think of it as a gentle heads-up about what may be in store when your student comes home for winter break.

    Over the last few months, you may have experienced tearful or frustrating phone calls home. You may have visited campus and heard about or seen what your child has been dealing with. But there are also kids who may have been suffering in silence or haven’t wanted to admit they are struggling. They may have been “taking things one week at a time” or “sticking it out until the end of the semester” to see if their situation improved.

    Students are coming home and families will face new realities

    But there are going to be some of you who may be surprised when your student comes home, and reality fully sinks in and needs to be faced. Those of us who have walked this path before and have come through it, need you to understand that no matter what you may face, it’s going to be OK.

    There will be students who got all A’s in high school who come home to find they’ve ended up failing a course. They may have worked really hard. They may have slacked off a bit. They may have struggled with newfound freedom and missed classes. Perhaps they didn’t take the initiative to reach out to their professor or to find a study partner. 

    It will be OK.

    There will be students who started out loving their roommates and end up desperately wanting to find a new roommate or another place to live. Eighteen-year-olds and nineteen-year-olds are still maturing and their brains are still developing. They aren’t the best communicators or compromisers. Some lack empathy and excel at apathy. 

    It will be OK.

    There will be students who want to transfer to a different college. Maybe they endured an entire semester not feeling like they truly fit in. Or they desperately miss their friends who went to a different school. Some felt homesickness that never fully went away, or they’ve discovered an academic major that their school doesn’t offer. Sometimes a place just isn’t the right fit, and it took some soul-searching for them to figure that out. 

    It will be OK.

    There will be students who have made the decision that college is just not the right path for them right now, or maybe forever. College can seem so alluring, especially when everyone around you is starting down that path. But it is truly not for everyone, and some kids hate to break that news to parents who they think will be so disappointed. 

    It will be OK.

    There will be students who speak up about mental health issues that they never experienced before and are struggling with. Living on your own for the first time can be scary. And after months of pandemic life, with so much more time spent at home, it was a shock to the system for so many students.

    Anxiety and depression have become struggles for countless college students. When undiagnosed and ignored, they can lead to addictions, eating disorders, and social withdrawal. These problems may only come to light when your student is back home, and you have eyes on them for an extended period. 

    It will be OK.

    For us parents, revelations such as these can cause feelings of despair, anger, and confusion. We may question our parenting and get overwhelmed thinking about who or what is to blame for these “failures” and dashed dreams. It’s natural and normal to focus on things like money lost, or substantial inconvenience, or even what family and friends will think about what has happened with your student.

    Important things to remember if you feel like your student’s college experience blew up this year

    Let your child talk, talk, and talk some more. And actively listen with love and empathy, and plenty of deep breathing. Imagine how you would react to a dear friend if they were coming to you with a similar issue. Think of this problem, roadblock, or resignation as an opportunity to grow closer to your child, through a partnership of working together on something significant in their life. 

    Practically every parent of older kids has been through something similar in their past if they are honest enough to admit it. There is no shame in your child being human, and in finding out what genuinely makes them unhappy or happy, and what makes them well and whole.

    “Everything is figureoutable”

    I recently saw a brilliant phrase on social media (and have since discovered it’s the title of a bestselling book) Everything is Figureoutable.

    No matter what your student and you may be faced with, there is always a next step, an action to start down a new path, and someone to offer direction or somewhere to go for assistance. 

    Keep the endgame in sight. Your goal as a parent is to have a loving relationship with your child for the rest of your life. This is a bump in the road, and they are still so young. We want to instill in our kids the belief that life is about progress, not perfection. They will figure things out.

    Becoming an adult is hard. We cannot expect our child’s experiences to be like ours. It’s simply a different world. If they end up with a different major, or a different roommate, or at a different school, or in a different career, it’s really OK. 

    They can regroup and recover, and you can be there offering support, guidance, and grace. 

    It will all end up OK. I promise.

    My son decided to move five hours away to live with his dad full time and I am still not over it. It was Thanksgiving break three years ago, during the pandemic when our kids were navigating online school. My son had been living with me full time for over two years while his dad worked on his health and well-being.

    His dad reached out to me to ask if our son could spend Thanksgiving through Christmas with him, given he was learning remotely anyway. I reluctantly agreed – my ex seemed to be doing better health wise and our son wanted to spend time with him. I pushed my reservations deep down into the pit of my stomach. As I watched him climb into his dad’s car I tried to focus on Christmas Eve when I would plan to pick him up again.

    A week before Christmas my ex texted me and informed me that our son was not going to be coming back to live with me. In fact, not only did my son not want to come back and live with me, he did not want to talk to me about it. I tried not to panic, but honestly it was like my worst nightmare was actually coming true.

    I wanted to run out of the door and drive up to see him right away but I was told he did not want to see me and I was expected to “respect his boundaries.” I did that, I respected his boundaries, and I have been for the last three years.

    I miss my son every day

    We finally did get a chance to talk a few months later and I have treasured the handful of times I have been able to see him since he moved in with his dad full time, but it’s not the same. He is not a great communicator and often goes months before returning any of my weekly calls, texts and messages. I know it’s not a death, but I find myself grieving this loss almost every day.

    I know he’s living a good life and is generally doing well as a senior in high school now but it feels like he’s gone to me. I don’t get to mother him. I don’t get to make him dinner or bring him breakfast in bed. I don’t know his friends or his interests.

    I don’t get to say “good morning sweetheart” or “drive safe”. He doesn’t come to me when he needs extra money for gas or wants to go to a party with his friends. I do get occasional updates from his dad but they are lacking in the detail this mother wants and needs.

    What eats away at me on a daily basis is not only did my son not come to me to tell me about his feelings or his decision, it felt like he abandoned me. I had no explanation, no reason, no warning. My heart and soul were literally ripped out of my body and I still weep over the loss. Does he even miss me? Does he even love me? What did I do wrong all of those years? Why did I let him go in the first place?

    I quickly realized that it would do me no good to focus on my loss

    Pretty quickly I realized if I focused on these negative thoughts I wouldn’t be able to function in life like I wanted to. The grief and sadness can be overwhelming at times and I knew if I didn’t learn to cope with it I was not going to be able to be productive at work, at home or in any of my other loving relationships.

    Three things that I have done that help me overcome the grief and fill my heart with other kinds of joy

    1. Write a letter

    My therapist actually suggested this and it is a great way to say everything you want to say without hurting anyone else. I wrote a letter to my son and his dad and then I burned it. It provided such a cathartic feeling of relief and allowed me to move forward. It is a very healing process.

    2. Spend time with others

    I am lucky enough to have a very supportive family with a step-daughter, nieces and nephews. Spending time with them and loving on them gives me the chance to express the nurturing side of me that I miss so much. Even if you don’t have relatives, spending time with friends, their kids or volunteering for kids and teens can be just as rewarding.

    3. Putting myself first

    I am very intentional about making sure that I include things in my day that bring me happiness and joy. There are always going to be things I have to do, but making sure I include some of those things I love like walking my dog, reading a spicy book or FaceTiming a friend is an important step in maintaining healthy mental space.

    Inevitably our kids grow up, move out, get a life of their own and many communicate less and less with their parents on a regular basis. It just happened way too soon for me. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t prepared.

    Maybe we never really are.

    Love to gift a good book? Here’s an excellent idea for how to give your kids the important gift of a book for Christmas without it being lost in the shuffle!

    I don’t think there’s a Keigley gene for Early Rising.  Sure, as very newborn humans the kids woke up early – but 3 am isn’t actually early.  It’s more like – late.  Or middle of the night.

    My dad was an extremely early riser.  Despite his hopes and his best efforts, the habit has never actually rubbed off on me.  And not on my children either.

    I have friends whose non-baby children routinely awake at o’dark thirty, full of energy and go-get-em.  I pity those parents.  (Just kidding.  They all seem happy about sunrises.  Good for them.)

    Our kids are mostly late sleepers and quiet awakers.  Hooray for me.  And, truly, Christmas morning is generally more of the same.

    (I bet you were wondering where this ramble was heading.  It’s heading this way.  I’ll show you.  I start my posts like I start my mornings – slow.)

    The tradition began

    We have never had a Christmas morning with children  bouncing into our bed at 4 am nor have we heard secret unwrapping sounds at 6 am.  However.  Since early on I was not certain how the Christmas mornings would find our children, I had prepared an idea to battle the potential Too Early Christmas Morning Woes.

    This tradition began when my oldest daughter, Riley, was small – and it’s been a steady family favorite since then.  Since those early years, there has never been a Christmas without this tradition.  (Even Christmas mornings on the road – this has been one easy tradition to take along with us.)

    While the kids are sleeping on Christmas Eve, I sneak to their rooms and place a wrapped book on the foot of their beds.  In the morning, when their golden slumber ceases, they open their eyes, spy the book and are allowed to open it all alone in their cozy warmth and to enjoy its treasure.

    It’s been a sweet way to encourage a quiet beginning to the Christmas holiday.  It’s a lovely way to ensure that the gift of a book doesn’t lose its value underneath shinier and louder options.  It creates an environment that says words have value and reading is special.

    I love picking their books each year.  I always include an inscription and the date on the inside front cover.

    One year my daughter was really into Nancy Drew.  This year my girls are loving the Warrior series.  I remember the year four-year-old Hawkeye received his own copy of Stellaluna after checking it out at the library weekly for the better part of that year. There have been cookbooks and comic books and a slow building collection of their own Lord of the Rings copies.  Also, a beautifully illustrated Hobbit.  The kids have pored over treasured Calvin and Hobbes books for years.

    I hope the Book on the Bed tradition is one our children will cherish and remember fondly – and even – find themselves sharing one day with their own children.

    Top 10 Gardening Trends for 2024

    The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society recently shared a press release with their top 10 gardening trends for 2024. Despite living in Ohio I follow the PHS closely on social media because they are the fantastic organization behind the Philadelphia Flower Show, which I have been honored to attend in the past. It is am amazing experience and a great way to get a new gardening season off to a fantastic start. They are a national leader for the gardening community and typically have an eye for trends. According to PHS…

    “These 2024 gardening trends are based on what we have seen by attending conferences, exhibitions, visiting countless personal and public gardens, and conversations with professionals. They are a fantastic way for gardeners to get inspired and get a feel for what professionals at the forefront of this industry are doing in their own gardens. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned expert, these trends and plant selections can breathe new life into your space in an approachable way,” said PHS’s Vice President of Horticulture, Andrew Bunting.

    You can read the full release here but I thought I’d share their trends for 2024 and give my own thoughts on each.

    1)    Considering the environment as you garden

    This trend includes gardening practices that put the environment first. As part of PHS’s ethos of “Gardening for the Greater Good,” gardening can promote environmental stewardship. This includes movements such as “Leave the Leaves” in the fall help reduce landfill waste (which I love), using battery operated blowers and mowers instead of gas, creating habitats for overwintering insects, turning lawns into meadows, opting for peat-free planting mediums, and buying native plants. I do all of this and more in my own garden and have for years, so I am thrilled that I was way ahead of this trend. I’ve even been known to take the bags of leaves my neighbors collect to save them from the landfill!

    2) Growing fruit at home

    Growing fruit at home has gained popularity for both those with yard space and container space. I currently grow apples, pears, paw paws, figs, serviceberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, honeyberries, lemons, limes, and currants. I love all the options you have with limited space. I only have half an acre. PHS gave some specific options for those with limited space below…

    PHS Recommends: For those with yard space, Asian persimmons like Diospyros kaki ‘Saijo,’ ‘Fuyu,’ or the native persimmons, Diospyros virginiana, and the native pawpaw, Asimina triloba have been gaining in popularity as alternatives to the more traditional pears, apples, and peaches. For gardeners who want to try container fruit gardening, new options include high producing, compact, ornamental, and self-pollinating plants for the home garden such as Bushel and Berry® blueberries, the Fignomenal® dwarf figs, and Sweet Kiss™ strawberries.

    3) Decorating with houseplants

    Houseplants continue to dominate as a source of décor while the term “plant parent” is now a common term! I’m not much on indoor plants unless they are seedlings that will eventually be taken outside but I do admire those who have thriving indoor collections!

    PHS Recommends: Popular houseplants in 2024 include the easy to care mother-in-law’s-tongue, Sansevieria (syn. Dracaena) and the popular low-light loving, unique foliage aroids (Monstera, pothos, AnthuriumEpipremnumAlocasia and Philodendron). The popular brand Proven Winners has introduced lifestyle house plant collections (Leaf Joy® Atrium™ Collection and Leaf Joy® Cocoon™ Collection) that take the guesswork out of figuring out ideal conditions for plants, offering easy-to-access information to ensure plants thrive.

    4) Achieving ecological certifications

    Several organizations recognize home gardens with ecological certifications. I myself have had two gardens certified as National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitats. It’s a fun way to ensure you are gardening with best practices for the planet and for wildlife and also be recognized for your small contribution. Most offer a cool plaque you can display to show your hard work and dedication.

    Monarch Watch Waystations Habitat Registration
    Penn State Extension Service Pollinator Friendly Garden

    5) Planting pollinator friendly gardens

    Pollinator gardens provide habitat and food for native pollinating bees, wasps, moths, and butterflies, including the iconic monarch butterfly. I love that providing them with food and water sources and places to overwinter has become the trend. I hope it also becomes the norm. I know there used to be a big disconnect in my own garden when I rarely grew flowers, just food. Once I started growing flowers on a massive scale, everything just thrived.

    PHS Recommends: Adding pollinator attracting plants such as Pycnanthemum, mountain mint; Eutrochium (syn. Eupatorium) Joe-pye weed; Liatris, gayfeathers; Echinacea, coneflowers and Asclepias, milkweeds will increase the diversity of garden pollinators.

    6)    Mitigating global climate change

    By planting more heat and drought tolerant southern native species, gardeners can help counteract the impacts of changing weather patterns, including increases in periods of drought and much hotter summers. Strategically selecting species for drought tolerance, as well as adopting waterwise gardening practices, as well as utilizing gravel gardens, rain gardens, or swale gardens are tools that can be used to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

    This just makes good sense too. No one wants a garden that is dependent on constant care and watering. Its expensive, time consuming, and no one likes a diva. Drought tolerant and native planting areas should be a huge focus.

    PHS recommends: Options include Mexican dogwood, Cornus florida subsp. urbiniana. Other good choices for likely heat and drought tolerant genetics include Magnolia grandiflora, southern magnolia, the willow oak, Quercus phellos and the Florida anise, Illicium floridanum

    7)    Using substitutes for boxwoods

    Boxwood blight is an ongoing fungal issue for many gardeners. I am also not a fan of the spider mites they attract. I have opted to get rid of my own boxwoods but if I do decide to add some in the future I will look into the resistant varieties they recommend.

    PHS recommends: Some great substitutions include alternate evergreens such as inkberry holly, Ilex glabra Strongbox®, Gem Box® and Proven Winners®, and Squeeze Box®. Additionally, boxwoods that are bred to be resistant to blight are being promoted by Better Boxwood® such as Skylight™, Renaissance™, Heritage™, and Babylon Beauty™.

    8)    Planting more grasses and sedges

    Still not a huge draw for me but I know they are VERY popular among many gardeners.

    PHS recommends: Some top performing sedges include the Wood’s sedge, Carex woodii; Cherokee sedge, Carex cherokeenis; common brome sedge, Carex bromoides; white-tinge sedge, Carex albicans and the ever popular Pennsylvania sedge, Carex pensylvanica. Some new grasses from famed grass hybridizer Brent Horvath at Intrinsic Perennials include two selections of the little bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Little Red’ and ‘Sandhill’ and the big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ and ‘Holy Smoke.’

    9)    Growing Hydrangea mania

    I adore hydrangeas and have 20 different varieties. My personal favorite is Hydrangea paniculata because they are more drought and heat tolerant and prefer full sun.

    Plant Options: Growers are responding by introducing several new varieties that emphasize stunning color variations and the ability to find a hydrangea for any garden space. Bailey Nursery’s First Editions® Hydrangea macrophylla Eclipse® features stunning purple-black foliage and contrasting pink flowers. From Star® Roses and Plants, Hydrangea paniculata Sweet Starlight™ is a new compact selection that is perfect for the small garden or container.

    10)  Enjoying a taste of the tropics

    Tropical plants are popular in the garden for their seasonal large and luxuriant foliage. This impact in the temperate garden creates a tropical-like feeling throughout the summer and into the fall, and offers up vibrant splashes of color, bringing a taste of the tropics home. I just started growing some tropicals myself this past year, elephant ears and cannas. They are currently overwintering in my basement.

    Plant Options: There continues to be many great tropical plants coming to garden centers including two new elephant ears, Colocasia esculenta Redemption™ and Pharaoh’s Mask™ from Plants Nouveau®.  There are a host of great new bold foliaged begonias with great leaf patterns including Jurassic rex begonias, Begonia rex Curly™ and the Shadow King® series. The Hollywood® Hibiscus, Sun Parasol® Mandevilla and Canna Cannova® Red Golden Flame and Bronze Peach are great new tropical plant introductions.

    “To simulate difficulty with focus, I have teachers read a short text on a screen and try to retain key points (like names, dates, and places) without taking notes and while loud, distracting noises (traffic, children playing, birds tweeting, and so on) play. The text also disappears off and on the screen during the activity, interrupted by intermittent thought bubbles that display questions like, ‘I wonder if it’s going to rain later’ and ‘Did I remember to switch off the gas?’ Without warning, the text abruptly disappears from the screen, replaced by a series of questions about the text. The teachers then have a few minutes to answer those questions.”

    It is only natural that many of us parents, caregivers, and educators routinely question the mistakes our children make. Sometimes it is because of our chosen parenting style, or simply, not knowing what else to do!

    Yes, we are constantly concerned about their actions and performance, and what they do right or wrong.

    Many children grow up in a society that pressures them to be perfect – to get the highest SAT scores, to land prized scholarships, to get into the best universities.

    The argument arises then – is constant questioning the key to their growth, or is there wisdom in allowing them the room to falter and learn?

    However differently you answer the question, how then do we, strike the right chord between guidance and allowing children the space to err and grow?

    The truth is, questioning every mistake may hinder their growth and development in so many ways. On the other hand, giving them the freedom to stumble here and there will help them learn the right things to do.

    In the following discussion, we look at the layers of promoting independence, building resilience, and cultivating a positive learning environment, all essential components for the future architects of our world.

    Why It Is Ok When Children Make Mistakes

    Making mistakes is a fundamental and crucial part of child development. It is important in shaping their character and lays the foundation for lifelong learning.

    Here’s why it is healthy and OK for children to make mistakes:

    1. Parents Also Make Mistakes

    The acknowledgment that we as parents are not infallible is a crucial aspect of understanding the dynamics of parenthood. Just as children make mistakes on their journey of growth, we, too, are susceptible to errors.

    In essence, recognizing that we make mistakes is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a testament to the complexity of the parenting journey.

    Embracing these mistakes, learning from them, and openly discussing them contribute to a healthy and nurturing family environmen.

    2. Mistakes Provide Learning Opportunities:

    Mistakes, far from being setbacks, serve as invaluable learning opportunities for children. During their development, errors and missteps are important in shaping their understanding of the world and honing essential life skills.

    Mistakes provide them with tangible, hands-on experiences that go beyond theoretical knowledge. Through trial and error, they actively engage with concepts to promote an understanding beyond rote learning.

    3. Mistakes Promote Independence and Confidence

    Allowing children to make mistakes encourages independence. Mistakes empowers them to make decisions, take risks, and learn from the consequences. This is a contributing factor to the development of a self-sufficient and confident individual.

    Children, like adults, crave a sense of independence. When we constantly question every mistake, we inadvertently send the message that their decisions are not trusted.

    When create room for errors, we provide them with the opportunity to learn from their experiences and develop a sense of autonomy. This, in turn, boosts their self-confidence, and encourages them to take on challenges with a positive mindset.

    4. Mistakes Can Build Resilience

    Mistakes are an inevitable part of life’s journey, and childhood is no exception. Rather than viewing mistakes as failures, we should embrace them as valuable learning opportunities.

    When children encounter setbacks, they develop resilience by overcoming challenges. This resilience becomes a powerful tool as they navigate the complexities of adulthood. Thus, refraining from questioning every mistake empowers them to face adversity head-on.

    5. Mistakes Fosters a Growth Mindset

    A growth mindset is the foundation of continuous learning and improvement. By refraining from excessive questioning, we create an environment that promotes a growth mindset.

    Children learn to perceive challenges as opportunities to grow, fostering a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

    This mindset not only aids in academic success but also forms the basis for a fulfilling and adaptable future.

    6. Appreciation of Mistakes Can Strengthen Parent-Child Relationships

    Constantly questioning a child’s actions can strain the parent-child relationship. Instead, we should prioritize open communication and trust. It is important to address parenting insecurities that charge up this belief.

    When children feel heard and understood, they are more likely to share their thoughts and experiences. This open dialogue establishes a foundation of trust, strengthening the bond between parents and children.

    A secure emotional connection provides the support necessary for children to navigate the challenges of adolescence and beyond.

    7. Room for Mistakes Can Nurture Emotional Intelligence

    An environment that allows room for mistakes not only aids in academic growth but also nurtures a child’s emotional intelligence. When mistakes are met with understanding rather than constant interrogation, children are better equipped to develop and express their emotions in a healthy manner.

    Questioning every mistake can unintentionally stifle a child’s emotional expression. It may make them hesitant to share their thoughts and feelings, fearing judgment or criticism. However, when mistakes are seen as part of the learning process and are met with a supportive attitude, children feel more comfortable expressing themselves emotionally.

    This environment also provides them with the space to identify and understand their emotions. It encourages self-reflection and introspection. It helps them recognize the emotional impact of their actions. This heightened self-awareness is a fundamental aspect of emotional intelligence.

    8. Room For Mistakes Prevent Fear of Failure:

    Creating an environment that allows mistakes is a powerful strategy in preventing the development of fear of failure in children. When children feel supported and understand that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process, they are more likely to approach challenges with confidence and resilience.

    In a good parenting atmosphere, mistakes are not stigmatized but viewed as opportunities for growth and learning. This mindset-shift shapes how children perceive failure. Instead of fearing it, they come to understand that missteps are stepping stones on the path to success.

    Acknowledging mistakes as part of the learning journey creates a sense of security for children. They know that even if they make errors, they won’t face harsh judgment or criticism. This safety net encourages them to take risks and explore new territories, both academically and personally.

    The Last Word: Should Parents, Therefore, Not Question Anything At All?

    The truth is, parents should not refrain from questioning their children’s mistakes, altogether, but rather adopt a balanced approach.

    The emphasis should be on creating a supportive and understanding environment that encourages open dialogue. Instead of immediate interrogation, we can encourage reflection, provide constructive feedback, and ask for their perspective.

    Using positive language and highlighting growth opportunities promotes a learning mindset. The key is to maintain open communication. We should be mindful of timing, and acknowledge the efforts children put in to rectify mistakes.

    This way, questioning becomes a constructive tool for guidance and learning rather than instilling fear or anxiety in children.
