Have you visited Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, GA? The large zoo is home to some amazing animals to observe, like giant pandas, elephants, rhinoceros and tigers. Add in a wide variety of birds, giraffe, otters and a special children’s zoo section with farm animals and attractions, and you have a pretty fabulous day trip.
My family visited Zoo Atlanta when we were in the Atlanta, GA area. Here’s everything we loved, plus some tips to help make your visit super enjoyable.
Animals at Zoo Atlanta
Let’s just start right with the best part: there are giant panda cubs at Zoo Atlanta. They kept my 4 kids and pre-teens entertained for quite some time. And then before we left the zoo, we had to circle back to see them again. Their super energetic play had quite an audience laughing great big belly laughs with every tumble and dive.
Watch a bit of the joy in a video of these panda cubs.
Besides the pandas, the zoo has a wide variety of the larger zoo animals (more than 1000 animals total!) that aren’t always at a local zoo. They have a very large elephant barn and outdoor space. If the elephants are indoors, you can observe them in an observation area of the barn. The same applies to the rhinoceros, they can be viewed in the barn or outdoors.
You’ll also be able to observe gorillas, lions, tigers, and sun bears at Zoo Atlanta, plus a whole heap of smaller birds and animals. My crew was very entertained by a variety of birds who treated us to some impressive displays of feathers and bird calls. The Southern Ground Hornbill even brought bits of mulch and food to the window as if he was trying to show us his prize. The zoo keeper in the area confirmed this particular bird has become quite social with guests and does indeed approach people at the window with bits of food and things. My kids enjoyed seeing his cache of prizes.
The Children’s Zoo at Zoo Atlanta
One area that we passed through quickly was the children’s zoo. There you will find alpacas, which is why we ventured down there, but also goats and sheep and farm-type animals. In this area, there are also a few attractions. There is a train to ride and a carousel, plus a Treetop Trail ropes and climbing course. These attractions are not included in admission and will cost an additional fee.
Additional Fees: The attractions’ cost is not included in admission to the zoo. The Treetop Tykes Trail is an additional $9.95 + Tax per person, while the giraffe feeding is $4. A wristband for unlimited rides on the carousel and train can be purchased for $9.
Staff at Zoo Atlanta
We have traveled to many zoos across the country. The thing that stuck out most to me at Zoo Atlanta was the number of staff available to speak to us about the animals. At almost every turn there was someone who could help you if you were lost or tell you about the animals in the area. From these folks we learned about individual animals at the zoo, their names and histories, but we also learned how their behavior or environment might contrast that of the animal in the wild. The staff members were all very friendly and happy to answer all our questions.
Tips for Visiting Zoo Atlanta
Pick weekday mornings for your visit, if you can! This will help you avoid crowds. We found most of the animals out and active, even though we arrived just as the zoo was opening.
If you are visiting in warmer months, visit early in the day. That sun gets hot.
Most zoos are back to honoring reciprocal membership pricing
If your family is large, buying a membership may even be cheaper than the admission cost for one day. My family of 6 would have saved $10 if we’d have purchased a membership instead of paying the gate admission price.
Places to Eat at Zoo Atlanta
The zoo has a number of small concession-style places to grab a bite as well as a burger restaurant, a café, and a place to get pizza. We did not purchase any food at the zoo, instead we brought snacks and swung by Starbucks for some coffee on the way to the zoo.

Have you practiced your putt and drive at Topgolf? Greenville golfers love Topgolf for the combination of entertainment venue, sports bar, and practice area. Though we aren’t golfers by any stretch of the imagination, we had a blast and we know you will too! The facility is incredible and we learned a ton of cool stuff about it, which we are sharing here because seriously, we can’t keep all this to ourselves. Perfect for a date night, or a family outing, Topgolf Greenville is the place to go if you are a golf lover!
1- Topgolf is for the entire family
You can bring your whole family for a fun time at Topgolf to hit balls around, eat, and enjoy the facility. They even have clubs for kids and toddlers, which are as adorable as you are imagining. Parents are encouraged to hang out on the lower level when they bring their kids.
2- Line Dancing was part of the interview process
This made us wish we had interviewed just to have fun and line dance. We heard it was a three-hour interview process and prospective employees had to line dance.
3- There are five huge TV screens at the bar/restaurant
The screens actually span from floor to ceiling in a two-story bar and restaurant. That’s 28-feet of video wall along with over 200 HDTVs throughout the facility. It’s amazing and perfect for anyone who loves watching their favorite team. Probably better than seats right on the field.
4- The golf balls all have microchips
Topgolf spared no expense to make sure their guests have a cool experience and microchipped all the golf balls so you can see on a screen how far you hit the balls and other stats.
5- The employees are ridiculously happy
They all seemed genuinely happy to be working at Topgolf and the smiles they all sported were contagious. We left happier than when we came. The Topgolf Greenville location is regularly hiring. Learn more about their careers at their site.
6- You don’t have to know how to play golf to enjoy Topgolf
They have instructors on-site if you want to learn how to play but the staff there can also give you a couple of pointers before you start whacking the balls. In fact, 51% of Topgolf guests aren’t golfers at all. Our editor, Bethany, can attest to this as her golf game is pretty terrible but she had fun!
7- Topgolf has other games you can play
They have an outside turf area where corn hole can be set up and they also have indoor foosball on every level of their bar/restaurant space.
8- Topgolf is an all-weather facility
It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny, raining, or snowing because you are sheltered when you play and they have heaters and fans to keep you comfortable.
9- There are 72 bays so a lot of people can play/eat
A bay is basically a separate place where up to eight people can hang out at a table and six people can golf. There is a turf launching pad and golf clubs at each bay and a hostess takes care of each bay so you can order drinks and food while playing.
10- The driving range is 215 yards long
Don’t worry, you’re not going to be hitting cars along I-85 with the huge driving range and enormous nets. And your car in the parking lot will be safe too.
11- There are more than 9 games at each bay
Scores are tallied through a touch screen at each bay and kept track of through membership cards (a one-time $5 cost for each golfer). Games can be played by anyone, novice to expert, and include 20 balls each.
12- You pay per hour for each bay, not per person
Pricing for Topgolfis done by the hour per bay, not per game or per person, and depends on the time of day. Before Noon daily, the cost is $30- $35/bay per hour, from Noon – 5 pm, it’s $40-$45/bay per hour, and after 5 pm, it is $50-$55/bay per hour. Friday – Sunday are always the higher of the price range, and Tuesdays offer half-price bay/hr deals all day!
13- Topgolf has summer camps for kids
Send your kid, ages 6-12, to summer camp at Topgolf for a week where they can learn how to play, or at least learn a respectable swing. It’s Monday-Friday from 9 am – Noon and costs $225/child.
14- Birthday parties are all the rage at Topgolf
You’ll probably be Parent of the Year if you have your kid’s birthday party at Top Golf.
15- Topgolf is three stories so you can see for miles when you’re golfing
Being up on the third level is pretty cool. You can see for miles on a clear day and it’s just a fun experience.
16- It costs nothing to rent golf clubs
Most of us non-golfers don’t have a full set of clubs in our garage. Thankfully all Topgolf bays have clubs you can use for free. You can bring your own though if you have them!
17- You don’t need to dress like a golfer to come to Topgolf
As long as you’re not dressed like you’re going to the beach, you’ll be fine. Bethany and I were both wearing cute dresses and we did just fine.
18- There’s an app for that
Topgolf has its own app, where you can track your score, reserve a bay, and even control what you watch in your bay (each one has its own TV).

Parenting styles play a crucial role in shaping a child’s development and behavior. Among the different parenting styles, uninvolved parenting is considered to be the least effective and beneficial for a child’s well-being.
Also known as neglectful parenting, it happens when the parent is emotionally distant and uninvolved in the child’s life.
Each of these styles has unique characteristics and can have different effects on child development and behavior.
Authoritative parenting is characterized by high levels of responsiveness and demandingness. Authoritarian parenting is characterized by high levels of demandingness but low levels of responsiveness. Permissive parenting is characterized by high levels of responsiveness but low levels of demandingness. Helicopter parenting is characterize with parents who are overly involved in their children’s lives. They hover over them, constantly monitoring their every move, and micromanaging every aspect of their lives.
In comparison, neglectful parenting is the least effective and most harmful for a child’s development.
While authoritative, authoritarian, helicopter and permissive parenting styles may have their own strengths and weaknesses, uninvolved parenting has no advantages and can lead to a range of negative outcomes for children.
Advantages of Uninvolved Parenting:
Well, there are no significant advantages of this type of parenting. In fact, it is considered to be the most harmful for a child’s development. Children who are raised by uninvolved parents lack emotional support, guidance, and attention from their parents. This can have long-term negative effects on their mental health, social skills, and academic performance.
Disadvantages of uninvolved parenting:
Uninvolved parenting is characterized by low levels of both responsiveness and demandingness. This style of parenting can have significant disadvantages and negative effects on a child’s development.
One of the main disadvantages is that children may develop emotional and behavioral problems. Children who are raised in this type of environment may feel neglected, unloved, and unsupported, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. These children may also have difficulty forming healthy relationships with others, as they may not have learned important social skills and may have difficulty trusting others.
Another disadvantage is that children may have poor academic outcomes. Parents who are uninvolved do not always provide the necessary support and resources for children to succeed academically. These children may struggle in school, have poor attendance, and will not have the necessary skills to pursue higher education.
Uninvolved parenting can also lead to behavioral problems in children. Without clear boundaries and rules, children may engage in risky or harmful behaviors, such as drug use or criminal activity. These children may also lack self-control and have difficulty regulating their emotions. This can lead to impulsive or aggressive behavior.
Finally, uninvolved parenting can have long-lasting effects on a child’s mental health and well-being. Children who experience neglectful parenting may be at greater risk for developing mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Just as well they may develop physical health problems, such as obesity and heart disease.
This type of parenting can also have serious disadvantages and negative effects on a child’s development. Children who experience neglectful parenting may have emotional and behavioral problems, poor academic outcomes, behavioral problems, and long-lasting effects on their mental and physical health.
It is important for parents to be emotionally available and responsive to their children’s needs to promote healthy development and positive outcomes.
Uninvolved parenting and computer misuse at home:
There is a growing concern about the relationship between uninvolved parenting and technology misuse among children and teenagers.
Uninvolved parents may not monitor their children’s use of technology or set limits on screen time, which can lead to excessive use and potential misuse of computers and other electronic devices.
Children who are raised in this style may turn to technology to escape feelings of neglect or boredom. They may spend hours on social media, video games, or other online activities. This is a contributing factor to addiction, poor academic performance, and social isolation.
Neglectful parents may also fail to provide guidance and education on the responsible use of technology. This will leave their children vulnerable to online dangers such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and online predators.
Furthermore, uninvolved parenting may contribute to a lack of supervision and guidance on children’s internet use, leading to potential misuse or illegal activities such as hacking or identity theft.
It is important for parents to be aware of the potential risks. Parents should monitor their children’s use of technology, set limits on screen time, and provide education and guidance on responsible online behavior.
By being involved and proactive, parents can help prevent computer misuse and promote healthy technology habits among their children.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, uninvolved parenting is a harmful parenting style that can have negative effects on a child’s development, behavior, and mental health. It is important for parents to be emotionally available, supportive, and involved in their child’s life.
Moreover, parents should set appropriate boundaries and rules regarding computer use to prevent computer misuse and addiction in children. By being actively involved and promoting responsible computer use, parents can help their child develop into a healthy, well-adjusted adult.
Permissive parenting is a parenting style that is characterized by lack of structure, rules, and boundaries. In this type of parenting, parents tend to be very lenient and permissive towards their children.
They do not impose strict rules or discipline and often avoid confrontation.
Permissive parents are typically very nurturing and supportive but are often criticized for their lack of control and setting boundaries.
Permissive parenting can manifest in different ways. Here are some examples of permissive parenting:
Lack of rules and boundaries: Permissive parents tend to have few rules and boundaries for their children. They do not set limits on behavior, and their children are often allowed to do whatever they want.
Lack of discipline: Permissive parents often avoid disciplining their children. They do not use punishment or consequences to correct behavior, and their children are not held accountable for their actions.
Overindulgence: Permissive parents may give their children too much freedom, too many choices, and too much material goods. This can lead to children feeling entitled, self-centered, and lacking in empathy.
Advantages of Permissive Parenting:
Permissive parenting can have some advantages in certain situations. Here are some examples of advantages of permissive parenting:

Positive parent-child relationship: Permissive parents tend to be very nurturing and supportive. They often have close relationships with their children, which can lead to positive outcomes such as increased self-esteem and emotional well-being.
Creativity and independence: Children who are raised in a permissive environment may be more creative and independent. They are often encouraged to explore their own interests and develop their own ideas.
Disadvantages of Permissive Parenting:
Permissive parenting can also have some disadvantages. Here are some examples of its disadvantages:
Lack of discipline and structure: Children who are raised in a permissive environment may struggle with self-control and decision-making. They may not learn how to regulate their own behavior or make responsible choices.
Lack of respect for authority: Children who are raised in a permissive environment may not learn to respect authority figures. They may have a sense of entitlement and be unwilling to follow rules or listen to instructions.
Poor academic performance: Children who are raised in a permissive environment may struggle academically. They may not learn the necessary skills to succeed in school, such as time management, organization, and study skills.
What are the implications of permissive parenting with technology?
Permissive parenting can have implications when it comes to the use of technology. Technology is a ubiquitous part of modern life, and it is important for parents to set boundaries and guidelines around its use.
Here are some implications of permissive parenting with technology:
Lack of supervision: Parents who are permissive may not supervise their children’s use of technology, which can lead to excessive screen time, exposure to inappropriate content, and even cyberbullying.
Inadequate filtering: They may not use adequate filtering software to block inappropriate content, which can expose their children to violent, sexual, or other harmful material.
No rules around technology use: Permissive parents may not set rules around when and how technology can be used. This can lead to children using technology during meal times, before bedtime, or even in school, which can affect their social skills, sleep patterns, and academic performance.
Addiction: They may also not recognize the signs of technology addiction, which can have negative effects on children’s physical and mental health.
The last word
In conclusion, permissive parenting can have both advantages and disadvantages. It is important for parents to find a balance between being nurturing and supportive while also providing structure and boundaries for their children.
Children need guidance and discipline to develop into responsible and well-adjusted adults. While this kind of parenting may seem appealing in the short term, it may have negative consequences in the long term.
It is also important for parents to set boundaries and guidelines around the use of technology, regardless of their parenting style. This includes setting rules around screen time, monitoring online activity, using filtering software, and modeling healthy technology use themselves.
By doing so, parents can help their children develop healthy relationships with technology and prevent negative consequences such as addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content.
I am the mom of two daughters, both of whom are now college graduates. I am sharing our story so that it may help future students.
My oldest struggled in school. My husband and I noticed this all the way back to elementary school. While she wasn’t a failing student, it was extremely difficult for her to get Bs and Cs, and getting her homework done was an ordeal not only for her but for the whole family.
We spoke to her teachers about this every year, but the response was always the same. They did not feel that she had any learning or attention difficulties.
The kids in the middle often slip through the cracks. (@maginnis via Twenty20)
We trusted the educational professionals
As we had no experience, we trusted what they told us.
This became an even bigger issue when she reached fifth grade. Her teacher that year would call her out in front of the whole class for “not paying attention” and had no problem embarrassing her. I know from friends that other children noticed this as well.
My husband and I met with the teacher on more than one occasion for treatment we thought was unfair and we also spoke with the principal on the subject. Nothing changed and neither one of them considered that she may have an attention disorder.
To this day, I believe the whole year affected her negatively as she moved forward.
Things just got worse in middle school and then high school
Things did not get better as she went through middle school and high school. My oldest was made to feel “dumb” because she could not focus and struggled with her grades. She was getting Cs and an occasional B but it was definitely “not good enough” in the town where we lived.
Sadly, when she was in 7th grade and her sister in 5th, their dad passed away. To say that this made things more difficult is an understatement.
By the time she got to 9th grade, she fell into a deep depression and was riddled with anxiety over the loss of her father and low self-esteem regarding her intelligence. Not one teacher reached out to me. I noticed her distress and took her to therapy and a psychiatrist where she was quickly diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder and severe ADD. By 10th grade, she was in therapy and on medication and everything changed. Her grades improved and she almost became a new person.
She graduated high school with decent grades and attended LIM College in New York City studying fashion merchandising. She graduated with honors, something that seemed impossible just a few years earlier. She now works in sales for a fashion brand and is a confident and happy young woman.
I look at her now and she is a completely different person than that insecure little girl I knew. Nothing makes me happier.
In contrast, my younger daughter was naturally “smart.” She was the kind of student who thrived in every class and all of her teachers adored her. She was even able to win over the same 5th-grade teacher who initially looked at her with disdain when she realized who her sister was. My youngest had the best grades in the class, so why wouldn’t she be well-liked?
She graduated high school with honors and was in the top 10% of her class. My younger daughter is now graduating from New York University and I am so proud of her as well.
The difference in my girls’ school experiences made me feel as if they were in different school systems
The difference in my experience with my two girls was as if they went through an entirely different school system. I learned a lot through watching two very different girls grow up. I also now know that being “school smart” is not the only smart there is.
I understand how important it is to not let a child slip through the cracks. Sometimes it is not the child who is ultra-hyperactive and failing every class who isn’t given the help they need. I noticed that the super bright kids thrive and the ones with severe learning disorders receive help. The ones in the middle sometimes get lost.
In our case, I was the one who invested a ton of time and heartache, not to mention money, to get her the help she needed. My daughter was lucky that I was able to do that. Some parents are not.
Social media is the master puppet that pulls our heartstrings. You are scrolling through social media and nostalgically liking pics of your friends cuddling with their young children. Then, your memories remind us that those moody and unaffectionate teens once snuggled on our laps and enjoyed our kisses.
Watching our kids grow up can be the battle of bitter versus sweet. On the one hand, we are proud of the people they are evolving into, and on the other hand, we miss the days when we were the biggest rock stars on the planet, and they ran towards us with open arms at pick up.
Parenting teenagers has perks and frustrations. Perks include the ability to clean up their messes, manage their own self-care and hygiene habits, and form their own opinions. Some of the biggest downers of teens include attitudes, raging hormones, and fear of poor judgment. Despite the hormones, attitudes, and lack of overt gratitude, they do still love and need us more than just as chauffeurs and ATMs.
Rather than mourning what was, celebrate what is.
Pay attention because their actions speak louder than words, particularly the little acts. Gratitude and love show up differently for everybody, but the little gestures are grander than meets the eye.
Teenage boys have different ways of expressing their love and gratitude (Twenty 20 @Svittlana)
7 ways teen boys show that they’re grateful to their parents
1. Teenage boys show their gratitude by asking for our help, advice, and opinions
Although the parent/child dynamic changes with time, our kids never stop needing us. Asking for help means acknowledging that you have the street credibility to guide them through their world. They might not follow our advice, but that’s okay because they are their critical thinkers who have to do what’s best for them. Celebrate that they even ask because they could leave you out of the loop and seek advice elsewhere.
2. Teenage boys show their gratitude by seeming relieved when we show up
Show up. They notice when we don’t show up. They probably won’t express it, but it comforts them to see us. They might say they don’t care if you miss their game or performance. However, when they have a big moment, regardless if it’s a hit or flop, they will need you to share the moment’s glory or help pick up the pieces.
3. Teenage boys show their gratitude by talking about their day with us
Whether it’s about a funny moment at practice or the incident in the lunchroom, they are opening up and communicating about something. If they are comfortable sharing the little things, they are likely to warm up for the confidential and important stuff.
4. Teenage boys show their gratitude by complimenting something we do
They are watching us when we don’t realize it because they are looking to see how to do this and that. Whether it’s how you make your grandmother’s lasagna or how you spoke to the restaurant server when the chicken was undercooked, you are modeling, and they are noticing. Be proud because nothing gives us a jolt of confidence like a compliment.
5. Teenage boys show their gratitude by noticing when you go out of your way for them and their friends
Hopefully, by this time, they realize that time is costly. A little goes a long way, whether it’s being the parent who picked up extra carpool shifts, buying their friends their favorite snacks, or being an additional set of hands on a project. Helping is part of what you do to show love, and they reciprocate by noticing, even if they don’t formally say “thank you.”
6. Teenage boys show their gratitude by asking us about ourselves
Nothing feels cooler than a teenager acknowledging some parts of us outside our role as parents. They are more interested in your journey than you think. Stories, photos, and IRL tours can help them understand who you were before they came along and who you are when you are not their parent.
7. Teenage boys show their gratitude with words: Thank you, I love you.
This is the ultimate double rainbow, pots of gold-unsolicited compliments, and expressions of love and gratitude without being prompted. Please don’t take it for granted. It might not be easy for them to say it, but they said it.
As they grow up and attempt to navigate the world and their place in it, they pay attention to us and how we handle ourselves and life’s boomerangs.
They might not ask for advice, but they are watching us on how we model the dos and don’ts of situations. Rather than mourn what they don’t do anymore, celebrate what they do. They will never want to cling to our legs again, but would you want them to anyway?
We need to coin a new word for the emotion of watching your children parent. One part sympathy, one part pride, and okay, a dash of schadenfreude. But whatever it is, I am here for it. Pass the popcorn.
My kids and their spouses are better parents than their dad, and I were. I’ll say it. It’s not that we didn’t work at it, but we were young and dumb and fresh-out-of-college poor. My kids had amateurs for parents. We were one hundred percent winging it.
As parents, we were amateurs
My main “resource” was a Dr. Know-it-all book that was light on helpful information and heavy on condescending heartiness. It’s okay, little mama! Teething happens! Colic happens! Relax! (super helpful at 3:00 a.m. with a screaming baby on your shoulder).
There were no mom blogs or internet communities; WebMD was not yet a glimmer in Jeff Arnold’s eye. Other than the occasional panicked long-distance call to Grandma, we were alone. The fact that my kids lived to be parents is a minor miracle.
The author, with her eight grandchildren. (Kirsten Macdissi)
By contrast, my kids are reasonably confident parents. They are older than we were. They’ve established their careers and are used to troubleshooting in other arenas. They are also used to having a plethora of information at their fingertips.
“Did you know that when a toddler throws a tantrum, his frontal cortex is completely disengaged?” my daughter asked me recently. I did not, although two decades of child-rearing and classroom teaching of adolescents have led me to suspect that brains stay immature for much longer than one might think.
Young adults have a lot of information at their fingertips, but that doesn’t make parenting easier
I don’t think having that knowledge makes it much easier when your tiny tot has a total meltdown. When it has happened in my presence, I have a weird, slightly out-of-body feeling of deja-vu. There’s the young dad/mom dealing with a Situation, and the little person who looks so much like they did at that same age…it’s a little bit funny, I’m not going to lie, but at the same time, I’m also having flashbacks of that parent’s momentary demonic possession in the middle of Target when he was a toddler. Sorry, kids. Parenting is not easy. Sending you the Katniss salute.
I no longer have to deal, to do the thing, because it’s not my job anymore. It was indeed the toughest job I ever loved, but I’m mostly retired from active duty. I’m in the reserves, usually in the spoiling division. My kids are the ones on the front lines now.
They couldn’t parent like we did, even if they wanted to
They don’t do things the way we did. They couldn’t, even if they wanted to, which I’m sure they don’t. The eighties/nineties were a primitive, Wild West era of no smartphones (hard to believe that once upon a time, phones were just…phones) when social media meant the local paper and the nightly news. We were homesteading in the woods, using our substandard car seats and microwaving things in plastic like barbarians.
They are kind about those years and not critical — at least to my face, which is all I ask —about how they were raised. Now that we’re past the age of teen and young adult antler-rattling, I feel I’ve achieved a certain matriarchal status. “You had four of us, Mom—how on earth did you do it?” they say, shaking their heads.
Parenting is just plain hard
Yes, I feel some karmic satisfaction in hearing that. They finally appreciate that keeping tiny humans alive and well is not always a stroll in the park. But I also feel genuine sympathy for the sleep-deprived nights, the hectic days spent putting out one fire after another, with seldom a moment to think a complete thought. Sometimes it’s just plain hard, and that’s a fact.
But there is also a lot of joy in parenting, and I think they have discovered that, too. I watch my son dance to “Let It Go” again with his little girl, his face tender. I watch my daughter cradle her heavy-eyed little boy, singing softly. I see the look of joy on my grandchildren’s faces when they see Mom or Dad and run toward them, arms open like wings. You are their person now; I want to tell my kids. I want to say to them this moment doesn’t last forever. But I think they already know. Maybe their dad and I did a few things right.
My daughter has one pair of pants that she really likes, so she wears them every day to school, to work in a deli kitchen, to band practice, all of which means sometimes those cargos are stanky. Since she’s 18 years old, it is far past time for me to have any input on her…
Young readers’ cognitive development and literacy skills are significantly influenced by language. From birth, children are immersed in the language, and their capacity to comprehend and use language develops with age. For young readers, complicated language can be challenging to comprehend and negatively impact their ability to read. Hence, it’s crucial to simplify language to help young readers excel in their literacy journey.

Using PenFellow for editing children’s books can provide several benefits. It includes expert writing skills, customized content, and improved readability and impact. These services can ultimately help authors accomplish their literary objectives
It’s important to use simple language when creating or choosing reading materials for young readers. This helps them understand and improves their reading skills. As caregivers and educators, we should provide them with texts that they can easily comprehend. This section will provide tips on how to simplify language to promote literacy, language development, and a love for reading in young children.
1. Use Simple Language For Young Readers
It’s important to use language in children’s books that are suitable for their age and easy to understand. Avoid using difficult words or terms that could be confusing. Instead, stick to using words that are familiar and simple for them to comprehend. Keep in mind the reading level of your audience when selecting vocabulary. You can also repeat certain words or phrases. It helps them remember and better understand the story.
2. Include Engaging Illustrations
To attract young readers, it’s important that illustrations are both visually appealing and relevant to the story. Using colorful and engaging illustrations can help kids better understand. They can enjoy the characters, settings, and events in the book. Working with a talented illustrator can bring the story to life and make it more interesting.
3. Create Relatable Characters
To improve kids’ engagement with a story, it’s essential to create relatable characters. They should be diverse and have qualities that children can identify with. These qualities can include emotions, fears, dreams, and experiences. The kids can understand and empathize with them. When children can connect with characters in this way, they become more invested in the story.
4. Incorporate Humor For Young Readers
Adding appropriate humor to your children’s book can make it more engaging. It makes reading enjoyable for young readers. You can include funny situations, wordplay, or jokes that are relevant to the story. But they should be appropriate for your target age group. This can create a sense of playfulness and fun, making the story more memorable and appealing to kids.

To make children’s books more appealing, it’s important to keep chapters brief. Long chapters can be overwhelming and exhausting for young readers. They can cause them to lose interest. But, shorter, well-structured, and engaging chapters can hold their attention. They can make the reading experience enjoyable and fulfilling.

To make books more engaging for kids, consider adding interactive elements. You can use puzzles, mazes, and activities for this. This will encourage young readers to participate actively in the reading experience. It will make the book more fun and educational. Additionally, interactive elements can provide opportunities for hands-on learning and creativity.
Incorporating characters from various backgrounds, cultures, and abilities in children’s books is an effective way. It helps to cultivate empathy, acceptance, and inclusivity in young readers. Using descriptive language with sensory details. This may include colors, sounds, smells, and textures in a story. It can make it more interesting for young readers. It helps create a vivid mental image of the story’s world. This makes it easier for children to immerse themselves in the story. They can imagine themselves within the plot.
10. Include Positive Messages and Life Lessons
Using children’s books to teach valuable lessons and morals can be very beneficial. It’s important to include positive ideas like kindness, perseverance, honesty, and resilience. Kids can relate to and apply them in their own lives. The level and age of your audience will determine if you should subtly integrate these messages into the story or explicitly state them. By including meaningful life lessons, the book can become both enjoyable and impactful for young readers.
It’s important to use language that’s suitable for young readers. This can help them to improve their reading abilities, and develop a fondness for reading. This makes the literature more inclusive for them. This can involve using words they understand and breaking up long sentences. It also uses fun storytelling methods. Simplifying language helps kids understand and enjoy the stories they read. Let’s focus on simplifying language for young readers as educators, caregivers, and writers. Authoritarian parenting is a parenting style that has been studied extensively by researchers over the years.
It is a style of parenting that is characterized by high levels of control, strict rules, and little to no room for flexibility or negotiation. There is always with little to no input from the child.
The authoritarian parent is often very strict and enforces rules with an iron fist. Children raised in an authoritarian environment may be punished harshly for even minor infractions, and the consequences of breaking the rules are often severe.
In this article, we will explore what authoritarian parenting is, its effects on children, and how it differs from other parenting styles.
Effects on Children:
The effects of authoritarian parenting on children can be profound. Children raised in an authoritarian environment may become anxious and depressed, as they are constantly living in fear of breaking the rules or displeasing their parents.
They may struggle with self-esteem and have difficulty expressing their feelings and opinions.
In addition to emotional effects, authoritarian parenting can also have negative effects on a child’s behavior. Children raised in an authoritarian environment may become rebellious, as they feel stifled by the strict rules and lack of freedom.
They may also struggle with social skills, as they may not have had the opportunity to develop them in a more relaxed, open environment.
There are many reasons why parents may become authoritarian in their parenting style. Some parents may adopt this style because they believe it is the most effective way to raise well-behaved and successful children.
Others may have grown up in an authoritarian environment themselves and may not know any other way to parent.
The most common reasons why parents become authoritarian:

Cultural Influences:
Some cultures place a high value on obedience and respect for authority figures. Parents who come from these cultures may feel that it is their duty to raise their children in an authoritarian manner.
Fear of Failure:
Some parents may become authoritarian because they are afraid of failing as parents. They may believe that if they are not strict enough, their children will not be successful in life.
Lack of Knowledge:
Some parents may become authoritarian simply because they do not know any other way to parent. They may not have had good role models growing up or may not have access to resources that can teach them more effective parenting techniques.
Personal Struggles:
Some parents may become authoritarian as a result of personal struggles they are going through. For example, a parent who is dealing with a lot of stress at work may become more authoritarian at home as a way to exert control over their environment.
Control Issues:
Some parents may become authoritarian because they have control issues. They may feel the need to control every aspect of their child’s life as a way to feel more in control of their own life.
It is important to note that while there may be reasons why parents become authoritarian, this parenting style can have negative effects on children. It is important for parents to understand the impact of their parenting style on their children and to be willing to make changes if necessary.
How Authoritarian Parenting Differs from Other Parenting Styles:
There are four main types of parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved, and permissive. Authoritarian parenting differs from the others in several key ways.
Authoritative parenting is characterized by a balance between rules and flexibility. Parents who use an authoritative style are firm but fair, and they encourage open communication with their children.
Children raised in an authoritative environment tend to be confident and independent, as they are given the opportunity to make choices and express their opinions.
Permissive parenting, on the other hand, is characterized by a lack of rules and structure. Parents who use a permissive style are often very relaxed and may allow their children to do whatever they want.
While this style can be beneficial in some ways, such as fostering creativity and independence, it can also lead to children who are spoiled and entitled.
In contrast, authoritarian parenting is characterized by a strict adherence to rules and little to no input from the child. While this style can be effective in some situations, such as when a child’s safety is at risk, it can also lead to negative outcomes for the child.
What experts have to say to authoritarian parents:
Authoritarian parenting can have negative effects on children, both in the short and long term. Children who grow up in an authoritarian environment may struggle with self-esteem, have difficulty making decisions, and may be more likely to engage in risky behavior.
Here’s what experts say:
Focus on Positive
Reinforcement: Rather than using fear and punishment as a way to control behavior, experts recommend using positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. This can include praise, rewards, and recognition.
Set Clear Boundaries:
It’s important for parents to set clear boundaries and rules for their children. However, these boundaries should be set in a way that is respectful and allows for open communication between parent and child.
Encourage Independence:
Authoritarian parents may have a tendency to micromanage their children’s lives. Experts recommend encouraging independence and allowing children to make their own decisions whenever possible.
Practice Active Listening:
Active listening is an important part of effective communication between parents and children. This involves really hearing what your child has to say and showing empathy and understanding.
Seek Professional Help:
If you’re struggling with authoritarian parenting and are finding it difficult to make changes on your own, it may be helpful to seek the support of a professional. A therapist or counselor can help you develop more effective parenting strategies and work through any personal struggles that may be contributing to your parenting style.
Experts recommend that authoritarian parents focus on positive reinforcement, set clear boundaries, encourage independence, practice active listening, and seek professional help if necessary. By adopting a more balanced and effective parenting style, parents can help their children thrive and grow into healthy, confident adults.
Conclusion
In conclusion, authoritarian parenting is a style of parenting that is characterized by high levels of control and strict rules. While this style can be effective in some situations, such as when a child’s safety is at risk, it can also have negative effects on a child’s emotional well-being and behavior.
Parents who use an authoritarian style may want to consider adopting a more authoritative approach, which balances rules and flexibility and encourages open communication with their children.
Parenting is the process of raising and nurturing children to become responsible and independent adults. It involves providing emotional, physical, and intellectual support through different stages of development. To do this correctly, parents may adopt different parenting styles, each with its own approaches and effects on children.
As parents, we all have our unique approaches to raising our children. Some may prefer a more authoritative approach, while others may choose to be more permissive.
At the end of the day, the way we raise our children has a significant impact on their development and future success. It will impact how they live, socialize, and work.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at these parenting differences and see how they can affect our children’s lives.

This type of parenting is often associated with a more relaxed and carefree approach to parenting.
While permissive parenting may be more enjoyable for children in the short term, it can have negative consequences in the long run. Children raised in permissive households may struggle with self-control, have difficulty following rules and may lack self-discipline.
3. Authoritative Parenting

Children raised in uninvolved households may struggle with emotional and behavioral problems, such as depression, anxiety, and poor academic performance.
They may also have difficulty forming healthy relationships and may struggle with self-esteem issues.

This approach is often seen as overprotective and can have negative consequences.
Children raised in helicopter households may struggle with independence and self-confidence. They may also have difficulty making decisions on their own and may be more prone to anxiety and stress.
What is your parenting style?
The way we parent our children can have a significant impact on their development and future success. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, it’s essential to be aware of the different types of parenting styles and their potential effects on our children.
By adopting a balanced and nurturing approach, we can help our children become confident, self-reliant, and successful individuals.
Are you looking for a family-friendly hike with a waterfall in the SC Upstate? KAG contributor Liene explores another one of the Upstate’s famed waterfalls, Spoonauger Falls! Part wilderness adventure, part waterfall magic, but entirely worth the drive to the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area!
True Wilderness: You Can Access Spoonauger Falls With A Short Hike
The Ellicott Rock Wilderness spans three states, the South Carolina portion measuring 2,859 acres in the Andrew Pickens Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest. Bordered on the west by the Chattooga River, there are three main means of access in SC: Chattooga Trail coming in from Burrells Ford, East Fork Trail from the Walhalla Fish Hatchery, and Fork Mountain Trail from Sloan Bridge Picnic Area. All three trails are strenuous treks into the backcountry.
However, on the south end of this remote area is a 50-foot waterfall reached by just a short trail from Burrells Ford Road – Spoonauger Falls. This hike embodies the spirit of the wilderness area, but is slightly more accessible; at just 0.3 miles to reach the base of the waterfall, it’s a perfect excursion for a family with small children!
We started our hike on Chattooga Trail from the trailhead on Burrells Ford Road. Parking is alongside the gravel road. Hiking north into the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River corridor, we passed several nice views of the Chattooga before coming to the Spoonauger Creek crossing.
The creek and the waterfall are both named for the Spoonauger family, which lived somewhere in the area above the falls. I’ve seen the waterfall called Rock Cliff Falls, as well as Spoon Auger Falls, however, the Forest Service maps indicate Spoonauger is the most commonly used name.
Immediately after crossing the creek look for the Spoonauger Falls sign, and follow the spur trail east. Just a short ascent later the waterfall is visible to your right – be cautious, as the trail can be slippery after a rain.
As always, exercise caution near waterfalls, and be aware that straying off the path can cause irreparable damage to sensitive plant communities, as well as allow for erosion on the steep walls of the gorge.
Things to See When You Hike to Spoonauger Falls
I have read that bats will roost in the rock crevices of the cliff, however, on our visit we didn’t see any bats, only salamanders in the pools below the falls. The waterfall is beautiful; in low flow it is a delicate lace, in higher flow a cascading veil.
Once you’ve taken in the falls, head back the way you came. The ramifications of the hemlock woolly adelgid are visible everywhere on this short hike, in the form of enormous dead and dying hemlocks, as well as egg sacs of the invasive insect, which resemble small tufts of cotton clinging to the underside of hemlock branches. The tiny brown-colored insect sucks nutrition from the tree’s stored reserves and injects a toxin while feeding, causing the tree to lose needles and not produce new growth. Death of the tree typically occurs 4 to 10 years after infestation, so although there are small hemlocks growing here and there, almost all the giants still standing are dead. While sad, it provides a good lesson to kiddos on how a small pest can take out a whole forest.
Chattooga River
Things to do Near Spoonauger Falls
Having returned to Burrells Ford Road, take a short stroll down to the bridge for a view of the scenic Chattooga River. Of course, make sure to cross into Georgia so that you can make this a two-state excursion!
Just a bit up the road you drove in on is another parking area, for the Burrells Ford campground. I often recommend this campground to friends wanting to get out for a weekend without the stress of reservations and fees: you can read about camping at Burrells Ford Campground here.
Another nearby waterfall hike is King Creek Falls hike – the 70-foot waterfall is under two miles from the campground parking area.
Plan your own trip to Spoonauger Falls!

This takes place among students and teachers as well.
But why has this happened, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of language?
In this article, we will explore these questions and more.
What is informal language anyway?
Informal language is a type of language that is casual, relaxed, and conversational. It is often used in everyday situations, such as social media, texting, and speaking with friends or family.
This language can include slang, idioms, colloquialisms, contractions, and other expressions that may not be used in formal or professional settings.
It is generally less structured and more spontaneous than formal language and may not follow strict grammatical rules.
Some examples include:
“Hey, what’s up?”
“That was lit!”
“I gotta go to work.”
“Wanna grab some food?”
“That’s so cool!”

In today’s digital age, technology has revolutionized the way we learn, and especially teach. As a teacher, you are always on the lookout for new tools and resources to engage your students and enhance their learning experience. One such tool that has gained popularity in the classroom is ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot designed to simulate human-like conversations. It can answer a wide range of questions on various topics, from history and science to literature and sports.
As a modern teacher, you can use ChatGPT to your advantage in many ways.
In this article, we will explore how you can use ChatGPT to explore its possibilities.
Should all teachers use ChatGPT in the classroom?
Whether or not to use ChatGPT in the classroom ultimately depends on the individual teacher and the teaching style.
Nonetheless, there are several potential benefits to incorporating ChatGPT into the 21st century classroom, such as personalized learning, 24/7 availability, interactive learning, language learning, and assessment.
As with any tool or resource, it’s important to use ChatGPT appropriately and effectively to enhance students’ learning experiences.
Teachers should also monitor their students’ usage of ChatGPT to ensure they are using it appropriately and provide guidelines if necessary.
See how ChatGPT works
Let’s say you want to know the answer to a question, like
“What is the capital of France?”
You might type that question as is into a chatbot or virtual assistant that uses ChatGPT.
ChatGPT would analyze your question and use its understanding of language to determine that you are asking for information about a specific topic, namely the capital city of France.
Using its training data, ChatGPT would generate a response to your question, which might be something like “The capital of France is Paris.” This response would be generated based on patterns that ChatGPT has learned from analyzing large amounts of text data, such as books, articles, and websites.
The response would be designed to sound natural and conversational, like something a human might say in response to your question.
Let’s also say you ask the question:
“What is the Laplace transform of f(t) = t^2 * e^-2t?“
ChattGPT will be able to understand the question and recognize that you are asking for the Laplace transform of a function. It will then its knowledge of Laplace transforms and calculus to calculate the answer.
Using the definition of the Laplace transform and some algebraic manipulation, it can find that the Laplace transform of f(t) is given by:
L{f(t)} = ∫[0,∞] t^2 * e^-2t * e^-st dt
Where L{f(t)} represents the Laplace transform of f(t), and s is the complex Laplace variable.
Applying integration by parts twice, it can find that:
L{f(t)} = 2 / (s+2)^3
Therefore, it will give you the answer:
“The Laplace transform of f(t) = t^2 * e^-2t is 2 / (s+2)^3.“
ChatGPT works by processing natural language input and generating natural language responses, using its deep learning capabilities to understand and respond to a wide range of queries and statements.
How can teachers use ChatGPT to enhance learning in the classroom?
Personalized Learning:
One of the most significant advantages of using ChatGPT is that it allows for personalized learning. Every student has a unique learning style and pace.
With ChatGPT, you can provide personalized learning experiences to each student. For example, you can assign different questions to different students based on their interests and knowledge level. This will help students to learn at their own pace and in a way that suits them best.
24/7 Availability:
ChatGPT is available 24/7, which means students can access it anytime they want. This is particularly useful for students who may not have access to textbooks or other learning resources at home. They can use ChatGPT to clarify their doubts and get instant answers to their questions.
Interactive Learning:
ChatGPT offers an interactive learning experience that engages students and promotes critical thinking. Students can ask open-ended questions and receive answers that encourage them to think deeper and explore new ideas. This can help to spark their curiosity and develop their analytical skills.
Language Learning:
ChatGPT can also be used to enhance language learning. Students can use ChatGPT to practice their language skills by asking questions and receiving answers in the target language. They also get the opportunity to read wide. This can help to improve their vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
Assessment:
ChatGPT can be used as a form of assessment to evaluate students’ knowledge and understanding of a topic. You can create quizzes and tests using ChatGPT and use the results to identify areas where students need further help.
When shouldn’t a teacher use ChatGPT in the classroom?
Image by Donate PayPal Me from Pixabay
While there are many potential benefits to using ChatGPT in the classroom, there are also some situations in which it may not be appropriate or effective.
Here are some instances when you may want to reconsider using ChatGPT in the classroom:
When students have limited access to technology:
If your students do not have access to computers or smartphones, using ChatGPT may not be feasible.
When students need direct interaction with the teacher:
ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot, which means it cannot provide the same level of personal interaction and feedback that a teacher can. In some cases, students may need direct interaction with the teacher to clarify doubts and receive personalized guidance.
When the curriculum does not align with ChatGPT’s capabilities:
ChatGPT is a general knowledge chatbot that can answer a wide range of questions, but it may not have the expertise to answer questions related to specialized topics or subjects.
When students become too reliant on ChatGPT:
While ChatGPT can be a useful tool to enhance learning, it should not be used as a replacement for critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students should be encouraged to think for themselves and not rely solely on ChatGPT for answers.
When ChatGPT is not used appropriately:
If ChatGPT is not used appropriately or effectively, it can actually hinder learning rather than enhance it. Teachers should ensure that students are using ChatGPT properly and provide guidance if necessary.
FAQs:
Q. Is ChatGPT only useful for high school students?
A. No, ChatGPT can be used by students of all ages, from elementary school to college.
Q. Can ChatGPT replace teachers?
A. No, ChatGPT is a tool that can be used to enhance learning, but it cannot replace the role of a teacher.
Q. Is ChatGPT free?
A. Yes, ChatGPT is free to use.
Q. How can I ensure that my students are using ChatGPT appropriately?
A. You can monitor their usage and provide guidelines on how to use ChatGPT effectively.
Conclusion:
ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance learning in the classroom. By incorporating ChatGPT into your teaching, you can provide personalized learning experiences, promote critical thinking, and improve students’ language skills.
However, it’s important to remember that ChatGPT is not a replacement for teachers. As a teacher, it’s your responsibility to guide and support your students, and ChatGPT can be a valuable tool to help you achieve this goal. Teachers should consider the specific needs of their students and curriculum before deciding whether or not to incorporate ChatGPT in their teaching.
So, why not give it a try and see how it can benefit your classroom?
