Helping Refugee Children Travel to Other Worlds: Bookwitty Donates Books for Children in Lebanese Refugee Camp

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Jul 27, 2016

In proportion to the size of its population, Lebanon hosts the highest number of Syrian refugees in the world. Bookwitty, a new digital content and book discovery platform, in collaboration with the UNHCR’s Save the Children, has donated books to supply a full mobile library in a refugee camp in the Bekaa Valley (https://youtu.be/gs2SUk5V5V0).

“Books are very important for children: they expose them to a variety of topics and enhance their knowledge, and help stimulate their imagination. Reading books is also fundamental to motivate children to go to school and learn,” says Save the Children Lebanon’s Award Manager Ahmad Halablab, who is working with his organization to ensure that refugee children are not out of school for more than a month.

“We didn’t have to think twice about helping the UNHCR launch a new mobile library considering that universal access to books is at the core of what we are about.”

    Cindy Carvalho, Director of Marketing

Over 800 books for children ages 6 to 14 were chosen by the UNHCR’s Save the Children educational advisors from Bookwitty’s extensive multi-lingual book catalogue to answer the pressing needs of a new mobile library. The mobile library concept is already present in other refugee camps in northern Lebanon, but there are none yet in the Bekaa Valley refugee camp.

The objective is to promote education and literacy by providing children, especially those who have not yet attended school, with a wide range of books. “We didn’t have to think twice about helping the UNHCR launch a new mobile library considering that universal access to books is at the core of what we are about,” says Cindy Carvalho, Marketing Director at Bookwitty.

Bookwitty has also used its digital content platform to bring awareness about the  refugee crisis by posting personal stories, interviews and articles written by journalists, authors and refugees themselves. The posts showcase a more personal side to the situation that goes beyond just facts and figures.

“As avid readers, the entire team at Bookwitty recognizes the importance of reading, not just from an educational standpoint, but also to allow children to be momentarily transported somewhere else; giving them respite from their current situation,”

Launched in 2015, Bookwitty.com is a unique knowledge-sharing platform that is centered around book discovery. It allows users to find, share and write content on books and a variety of topics, both specific and general. Through user generated-content, people can discover and purchase books, even the most inaccessible.  It was named Official Content Platform in 2015 for both the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in London, as well as for Book Riot Live, an event for book lovers in NYC.

  • A Saga of Freedom Culminates in Ideal Church Coming to Life in Budapest

A Saga of Freedom Culminates in Ideal Church Coming to Life in Budapest

    [ad_1]

Budapest’s Ideal Scientology Church opens July 23, 2016, to mark a milestone for spiritual freedom in Hungary.

Already there are epic tales about Scientology in Hungary—a country that for centuries has cherished its myths and histories. In the last days of the 1980s and the dawning of the 1990s, totalitarian, atheistic Communism receded from Eastern Europe, much of Asia and Russia. Long starved for spirituality, Hungarians—like all people who had suffered under the Soviet commissars—quickly sought truth and religion. In 1988, a single copy of L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health pierced the iron curtain and a movement was born.

Now, some 25 years after first planting the Scientology banner in Budapest, the religion opened an Ideal Church of Scientology Organization, in the historic city. The Budapest Ideal Org is the 52nd Ideal Org that has opened since 2003, and with an accelerating pace of inaugurations, another 50 are already in the making.

“It is said the whole world knows your city as a capital of freedom. Your fight to be free translates into every known language on Earth. It is also said that whenever people yearn for liberty, they become ‘citizens of Hungary.’”

Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center

“It is said the whole world knows your city as a capital of freedom,” said Scientology’s ecclesiastical leader, David Miscavige, in an address to some 3,500 Scientologists and friends at the July 23 opening of the Budapest Ideal Church. “Your fight to be free translates into every known language on Earth. It is also said that whenever people yearn for liberty, they become ‘citizens of Hungary.’”

As a country more or less situated in the middle of everywhere, Hungary has had its share of visitors. Nomads from the east a thousand years ago founded a kingdom and crowned King Stephen I. Then came Mongols and Ottomans, the Hapsburg Austrians, Germans and Russians. There have been wars and great upheavals, tremendous cultural surges and marvelous music, and don’t forget the cuisine. Even spicing history up in the 15th Century, a gent named Vlad (AKA Dracula) was sharpening his canines in the Transylvanian corner of Hungary.

So, as eddies and floods of civilization washed across Hungary, a great city was built on the hilly west side of the Danube, Buda. A slightly younger civic sibling, Pest, arose on plains on the east side of the great river. Budapest today is the cultural, political, and commercial hub of Hungary, and one of the great metropolises of Central and East Europe. Full of great, historic landmarks—Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, the Chain Bridge, and so many more—a new emblem of liberty has been added to the city, the culmination of work by thousands of Scientologists.

Scientology’s Ideal Org stands amidst Budapest’s bustling heart. Located on one of the city’s main thoroughfares, Vaci Street, in the thriving District XIII, the 64,000-square-foot Church is impossible to miss. Its 85-foot Scientology sign extends across its western elevation and announces its presence to the more than 100,000 commuters each day.

“A longing for spiritual independence” is how Mr. Miscavige described Hungary and the crowd at the opening. “Here stands what you built to proclaim it can be done—your new Ideal Church of Scientology of Budapest!”

The Church’s grand opening is the culmination of the religion’s rapid rise since its founding in Hungary a quarter century ago. In fact more than 33 missions now dot the Hungarian landscape and beyond into neighboring countries of Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. And representatives from each were among the 3,500 Scientologists and guests present at the grand opening ceremony.

Chief among the attendees were leading lights of Hungarian society welcoming the Church to its new home: Dr. István Komáromi, Brigadier General, Police Chief of Pest County Ret.; Dr. Ildikó Hekáné Szondi, Vice-Chair for Culture, Education, Tourism and Youth, City of Szeged; Ms. Agnes Debreceni, Board Member, Gardony Education Foundation of Hungary; and nationally renowned novelist Mr. István Nemere.

“It was 15 years ago when you first reached out to me. You wanted to run a marathon across Hungary and wake up our country to drugs,” Dr. Komáromi told the crowd. “And so together we launched the first Drug-Free Hungary Marathon in March 2002. And since that time you have swept this nation with our message. Reaching more than 400 towns and cities. Distributing over two million anti-drug booklets. And inspiring the youth of an entire nation to live drug-free lives.”

Ms. Debreceni described how Applied Scholastics, utilizing L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology, was transforming the education landscape. “Shortly after beginning my career I encountered problems in educating my students. Many kids were labeled ‘problematic’ or diagnosed with ‘learning difficulties.’ It’s heartbreaking for an educator to see these problems and not have the tools to help. Yet, in this accumulating darkness there are still people working, people bringing hope; unwilling to give up. And I met those people at Applied Scholastics Hungary.”

Hungary’s national character is defined in part by culture and a love of the humanities. Dr. Szondi recalled that she had first met Scientologists at her “civil coffee houses,” where citizens come to learn how they can be more civically engaged. “I always want to show everything good that is going on in town,” she said. “And that most definitely includes you and specifically The Way to Happiness. After all, who doesn’t want to be happy? But even more importantly, I believed others needed to know about it. I believe the Hungarian way should be Flourish and Prosper.”

Also speaking about cultural heritage, the author Mr. Nemere, referred to Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, also a preeminent writer of many genres. “Mr. Hubbard said he was just a man and yet he built a path to freedom and one that is not too steep to walk,” Mr. Nemere said. “Because of him, no matter how clever or lucky, how rich or poor—anyone can get into a higher place, beyond what they ever imagined. All of which is to say, L. Ron Hubbard is the greatest humanitarian of the 20th and 21st century.”

The new Budapest Ideal Org provides visitors with an introduction to Dianetics and Scientology, beginning with the Public Information Center. Its displays, containing more than 500 films, present the beliefs and practices of the Scientology religion and the life and legacy of Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The Information Center also offers a detailed overview of the many Scientology-supported humanitarian programs. These include a worldwide human rights education initiative; a far-reaching drug education, prevention and rehabilitation program; a global network of literacy and learning centers; and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program, now representing the world’s largest independent relief force.

Budapest’s Chapel provides for Scientology congregational gatherings, including Sunday Services, weddings and naming ceremonies, as well as a host of communitywide events open to members of all denominations. The Ideal Org further includes multiple seminar rooms and classrooms, in addition to an entire floor dedicated to Scientology auditing (spiritual counseling).

The Budapest opening continues an unrelenting growth period for the Church in the past 12 months. In fact, it caps a decade of Church expansion that out-powers the previous 50 years combined. Recent Ideal Church openings have occurred in Atlanta, Georgia; Milan, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; Bogotá, Colombia; and Basel, Switzerland. Also, the Church recently opened Scientology Media Productions, a five-acre, technologically cutting-edge studio in Hollywood, California, in which the religion’s message will be proclaimed via television and radio broadcasting, Internet and social media and every other media platform.

And more is on the way, with openings of more Ideal Orgs in the coming year planned for cultural epicenters in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America.

    Press Release

    Jul 13, 2016

Chattanooga, Tennessee student Lauren Sims has been named one of five finalists in LearningRx’s national competition celebrating real life changing stories across the country. Lauren’s parents enrolled her in personal brain training after they noticed she was having trouble sounding out words and reading out loud, as well as struggling with math, confidence and memory-related tasks.

Before LearningRx, Lauren avoided reading. Now her parents say she reads voluntarily! They also witnessed her confidence soar, her math and memory skills improve, and her nightly struggles with homework practically disappear. For the summer break, Lauren set a goal to read more than 26 books. “Before LearningRx, I didn’t want to go to college,” she says, “but now I think that could be another challenge that I could do for myself and that I could overcome.” Lauren’s mother says Lauren has talked about becoming a surgeon.

Meet a Scientologist—School Principal Fiona Milne, Helping the Next Generation Thrive

    [ad_1]

As the daughter of a minister, wanting to help people came naturally to Fiona Milne. But it wasn’t until she learned about Scientology that she found out how.

    Press Release

    Jul 11, 2016

New South Wales, Australia, July 7, 2016 (Newswire) -When Scientologist Fiona Milne of Sydney, Australia, learned about Study Technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, she also found her calling in life.

Milne grew up in a religious family. ”My father was a minister of religion and he was very interested in helping people lead better lives,” she says. “So for me, that was perhaps an inborn idea that you grow up to help people. And I still believe that an important part of growing up and your education is your ability to help others.”

I’m doing what I want to do and the rewards from that are amazing. I really, truly love seeing my graduates and hearing where they are around the world and the impact they are having. They go out from here knowing they can help someone else.

Fiona Milne, Scientologist and headmistress, Athena School, New South Wales, Australia.

Following her parents advice she studied nursing, but she ran into trouble.

“I was very distressed about my nursing exams,” she says. “I met a young man who was a Scientologist and he introduced me to the Study Technology and I was empowered as a student. From that point on I decided I wasn’t going to let children suffer how I’d suffered in the classroom. I went back to university and then studied my post graduate degree in education.”

Scientology also helped Milne as a wife and mother. “Being a Scientologist helped me raise my children with understanding,” she says. “It also led to us having a nice, calm household. Constantly busy, always very active, but very seldom was there an upset in the household because we also knew how to handle upsets very quickly.”

It was when her children were young that she became involved in establishing a school that uses Study Technology. “I have been working here at the Athena School for 25 years now,” she says.

Milne describes how using this technology gets miraculous results. One example was a young man who didn’t like science. She applied a simple technique of clearing words that he didn’t understand. “After sitting down with him for a few minutes and defining the word science and the purpose of science, he’s now one of our most enthusiastic young scientists.”

Milne finds her life very satisfying. “I’m doing what I want to do and the rewards from that are amazing,” she says. “I really, truly love seeing my graduates and hearing where they are around the world and the impact they are having. They go out from here knowing they can help someone else.”

Glass Art Center Lights Up Lives – Montgomery County’s Celebration Art Glass Thinks Being a Good Neighbor Is Key

    Press Release

    Jul 6, 2016

The glass studios at Celebration Art Glass were awash with color and filled with the chatter of teenage girls as they worked on their fused glass bowls. But while it seemed like just another day in this Rockville glass center, which can average as many as two thousand or more students per year in its fused and stained glass classes, this class had a special place in the Celebration Art Glass team’s hearts.  “When we were approached to provide free glass classes for Montgomery County teens in a program for ‘at risk’ students we jumped at the chance.  Serving the community – being a good neighbor – is a fundamental part of who are,” according to Celebration founder Missy Loewe.  Marilou Legge, an instructor at Celebration agrees.  “Bringing the arts to kids can open a door to lifelong creativity – not just artistically but in terms of how they problem solve and deal with challenges.  I loved watching these young people in these classes learn to try something new, gain confidence and frankly, just have some fun. And I love being part of an organization that puts their ‘good neighbor’ philosophy into action.”

Working with the teens was just the latest in Celebration’s outreach to the community.  During Montgomery County’s Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service, the team, under the auspices of Washington ArtWorks, provided materials and coaching to dozens of volunteers who assembled more than 200 glass sun catchers for residents of local low income group homes, including nursing homes and veterans’ facilities.  Virginia’s Fenwick Foundation partnered with Washington ArtWorks to deliver the works of art, and recently recognized Washington ArtWorks with the Fenwick Award for community service for the MLK event and other programs.

“When we were approached to provide free glass classes for Montgomery County teens in a program for ‘at risk’ students we jumped at the chance. Serving the community – being a good neighbor – is a fundamental part of who are.”

Let’s Go Robotics Patent on Robotic Gripper Increases Reliability in Unattended Operations

    [ad_1]

Let’s Go Robotics announces new patent on robotic gripper. Gripper handles microwell plates without dropping, crushing or mishandling. Product can retrofit most robotic arms and positioners.

    Press Release

    Jun 1, 2016

Let’s Go Robotics today announced that the US Patent and Trademark Office has granted patent #9,327,411 for a robotic gripper that eliminates common points of failure in robotics used in life sciences and other applications. The method is based on sensor-less force detection to avoid crushing and novel rack and pinion gears to avoid dropping. The patent is used in the Let’s Go Robotics electro servo gripper named The Gripster and used in a wide range of robotic systems. Let’s Go Robotics specializes in life sciences automation for the future.

“Our revolutionary gripper handles microwell plates without dropping, crushing or otherwise mishandling them,” said Brian Ganz, Let’s Go Robotics President. “These plates may contain drug discovery experiments worth thousands of dollars or drug trial testing materials that are irreplaceable. Our patented technology safeguards these experiments as plates are transferred between instruments.”

“Our revolutionary gripper handles microwell plates without dropping, crushing or otherwise mishandling them. These plates may contain drug discovery experiments worth thousands of dollars or drug trial testing materials that are irreplaceable. Our patented technology safeguards these experiments as plates are transferred between instruments.”

    Brian Ganz, President

The patented robotic gripper detects the presence of an object such as a microwell based on force rather than a sensor. Once force is detected, power is held constant, eliminating the risk of crushing. Only a small amount of current is required, avoiding common overheating problems. Force is created by a small stepping motor driving mechanical gears and is fully programmable for each environment. Grip forces are varied automatically based on plate width, and whether the plate is lidded or un-lidded, empty, full or partially filled. Objects can be gripped in landscape and portrait orientation.  Software is included to setup the gripper for unique applications.   No plastic is used, just all precise bearings and machined aluminum for quality and longevity.

The gripper uses rack and pinion gears with a worm drive to eliminate dropping risk. The worm drive turns the gears but the gears cannot turn the worm drive. As a result, the gripper cannot lose its grip on a microwell plate. A manual override button can be pressed to free a plate, at the gripper if needed. Other features covered in the patent include top and rear mounting options and collision detection to protect the microplate.

The Gripster can retrofit most robotic arms and positioners. Its built-in controller easily interfaces with robot controllers. Let’s Go Robotics regularly works with scientists and engineers to get the best fit for their laboratory automation needs.  Other features include a bar-code reader mounted on the gripper, along with additional I/O for future automation support.

“Grippers are an extremely important component in life science robotics and a common point of failure,” said Ganz. “This patent recognizes the innovative nature of our robotic gripper and represents a significant improvement in reliability in unattended laboratory operations.”

Patent #9,327,411 was issued on May 3, 2016. The patent claims the benefit of Provisional Application 61/422,571 filed December 13, 2010. Brian Ganz is a named inventor on this patent and more than 20 other US patents. Read the full text of the patent on the US Patent and Trademark Office web site.

LearningRx Reviews Complaints From Parents of Students With Dyslexia or Reading Struggles

    [ad_1]

Parents of dyslexic students surveyed on reading and school related improvements after LearningRx Brain training.

    Press Release

    Jun 1, 2016

A 2016 survey of 109 parents whose children had been previously diagnosed with dyslexia and later completed a LearningRx (www.LearningRx.com) personal brain training program, found that many of their pre-training complaints regarding academics—especially reading—were addressed. The results of “Mixed Methods Study of LearningRx Results for Students with Dyslexia” have been published in LearningRx’s 48-page 2016 edition of “Client Outcomes and Research Results,” which can be downloaded here: http://www.learningrx.com/our-programs/learningrx-results/.

Specifically, regarding their child’s school-related improvements, the parents responded that:

“With 95,000 students having graduated our brain training programs, we have plenty of data for independent researchers to study our unique cognitive training methodology and results.

Tanya Mitchell, VP Research and Development

    • 59% read faster

    • 56% completed homework more independently

    • 53% remembered details from reading

    • 52% understood what was read

    • 46% achieved better grades

    • 38% paid attention longer

In addition, one-third of respondents said their child was “eager to read” after going through LearningRx one-on-one brain training. Many parents also reported significant improvements in family and social relationships.

LearningRx programs are based on 35 years of research and input from a team of psychologists, educators, speech and language pathologists, and occupational therapists,” says Tanya Mitchell, Vice President of Research & Development for LearningRx. “With 95,000 students having graduated our brain training programs, we have plenty of data for independent researchers to study our unique cognitive training methodology and results. We not only encourage independent research, but we also actively seek it out. We are eager to share our results, and independent research helps validate our work among the scientific community in an industry that is still relatively young, and therefore under constant scrutiny. It’s part of the reason we created the Gibson Institute of Cognitive Research (www.gibsonresearchinstitute.org).”

LearningRx (www.LearningRx.com) has a network of 78 centers across the United States and locations in over 35 countries (www.BrainRx.com). The company’s average customer rating is 4.9 out of 5. In addition, when asked how likely customers were to recommend the company to someone, 19,000 of 21,836 customers rated LearningRx a 9 or 10. LearningRx specializes in identifying and correcting the underlying cognitive skill deficiencies that keep people from achieving their full potential in school, business, or life. Using a comprehensive skills assessment test and intensive one-on-one training, LearningRx certified programs enhance weak cognitive skills such as attention, memory, processing speed, and problem solving. The company has garnered countless awards, including Franchise Business Review’s Franchisee Satisfaction Award, and rankings on Bond’s Top 100 Franchises and Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 lists multiple years in a row.

LearningRx Reviews Research Study That Showed Brain Training Created New Brain Connections

    [ad_1]

LearningRx training showed significant changes in brain connectivity involved in cognitive processing following LearningRx cognitive training in an independent randomized control study.

A Randomized Control Trial (RCT) testing LearningRx’s (www.LearningRx.com) ThinkRx personal brain training program has been completed and analysis of the brains of the students found significant physical changes. The results of the analysis—“Analysis of Resting State Functional Connectivity in a Cognitive Training Intervention Study”—have been published in LearningRx’s 48-page 2016 edition of “Client Outcomes and Research Results.” http://www.learningrx.com/our-programs/learningrx-results/.

In the study, 30 high school students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: ThinkRx, digital training, or study hall (control) for a 15-week training period. All students underwent cognitive testing and MRIs pre– and post-training. Analysis of cognitive testing scores found that training groups scored significantly higher than controls on multiple tasks, with the most significant gains occurring in auditory processing.

“Using fMRI, we looked at underlying brain changes related to gains in auditory processing following LearningRx training,”

Dr. Christina Ledbetter , Neuroscientist and Research Fellow at LSU Health Sciences Center

Even more exciting: fMRI analysis of resting state connectivity with the auditory cortex by Neuroscientist and Research Fellow at LSU Health Sciences Center Dr. Christina Ledbetter revealed:

                    • Significant changes in the resting state connectivity with multiple cortical regions involved in cognitive processing occurred following cognitive training

                    • An increase in global network efficiency occurred following cognitive training

                    • Network changes in the brain correlated to auditory processing gains

“Using fMRI, we looked at underlying brain changes related to gains in auditory processing following LearningRx training,” explains Dr. Ledbetter. “We found that changes in brain connectivity occurred between the auditory cortex and cortical areas involved in cognitive processing, and that the degree of change correlated with gains in auditory processing.”

LearningRx programs are based on 35 years of research and input from a team of psychologists, educators, speech and language pathologists, and occupational therapists. “With 95,000 students having graduated our brain training programs, we have plenty of data for independent researchers to study our unique cognitive training methodology and results,” says Tanya Mitchell, Vice President of Research & Development for LearningRx. “We are eager to share our results, and independent research helps validate our work among the scientific community in an industry that is still relatively young, and therefore under constant scrutiny.”

Gifted Boy Inspires Subscription Box Boosting Accessibility of African-American Children’s Literature

    [ad_1]

Finding children’s literature featuring characters of color is now a lot easier for parents with the subscription box service, Little Buzz Book Club.

Inspired by a young boy who taught himself how to read at the age of two, the Little Buzz Book Club is a monthly delivery of exciting new and classic children’s books featuring African, Caribbean and African-American Cultures. But it’s not just African-American children’s literature that’s featured in the monthly subscription box. There are also games, a card from Little Buzz and educational tool kits for parents.  What’s more is that there is also an authentic African keepsake in every box.

Most African-American parents understand how challenging it can be to find books for black children and statistics from Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) attests to this. CCBC receives most of the trade books published annually in the United States. In 1985, only 18 of the 2,500 trade books that were published were written by African Americans. Although this number has improved over the decades, statistics still indicate that there is still a diversity gap when it comes to children’s book. CCBC’s 2015 statistics revealed that of all the children’s books received by the Center, only 7.59% featured people of color.

“I was disappointed that I had such a difficult time finding books for my son who loved reading but didn’t see himself in many books. Then I realized there were millions of other moms who wanted to inspire their children with stories about characters that looked like them as well.”

Dr. Hamidah Sharif-Harris, Founder of Little Buzz Book Club

Little Buzz Book Club is on a mission to promote books about people of color including African and Caribbean culture. The Little Buzz character was inspired by the Founder’s six-year-old son, Qadar. At the age of two, Qadar taught himself how to read. He has a rare condition known as hyperlexia – a natural ability to decode and understand words without the ability to speak in conversation. Qadar had a hard time communicating with others but eventually began to mimic conversations he read in the books. As a result, he has developed a love for reading and enjoys putting himself inside of books.

When asked about the motivation to start the subscription box, Sharif-Harris said: “I was disappointed that I had such a difficult time finding books for my son. Then I realized there were millions of other moms who wanted to inspire their children with stories about characters that looked like them as well.”
