    May 17, 2016

In a unique collaboration crossing the globe, Tina Gheisari and Michael Bender are debuting an inspirational novel “The Mystique of a Romance Between May and Me,” (appropriate for all ages) on Amazon.com. Michael Bender (editor) said, “Tina has managed to give all of us an opportunity to gain an understanding of the beauty of motherhood and mothers, our freedom to choose, the Eastern philosophy of love, and the spiritual being who protects us all. For those of us who are not mothers, Tina’s book gives us a greater appreciation for our own mothers and our roles in the world in which we live. All through following the life of a pearl!”

“The first word you must learn is “love” because this is the essence of me; the glittering flames from within the Creation has been started…After that I created a generous protector from the same species to ensure their survival. I called this support ‘Mother.’…Then Shell, the Mother spoke up and said, ‘Ah yes! You should promise not to forget this enamored love wherever you go, and whatever you become. ‘I promise, mother; I do, Pearl answered!”

(From the book: “The Mystique of a Romance Between May and Me”)

Tina Gheisari’s book, “The Mystique of a Romance Between May and Me,” which was originally written in Farsi, follows the life and rebirth of a pearl, in a beautiful, spiritual, and romantic novel. It describes motherhood in a profound and moving way, and includes thoughtful reflections on our choices in life, the meaning of life and death, how music is a universal language, the true meaning of childhood and even the mystery of sleep.

Tina Gheisari, the author, is an English teacher, coach, and translator whose native language is Farsi. She is the loving and caring mother of two grown children, a daughter and a son, Hanieh and Hossein, who were the source of the inspiration for her novel. She believes that children are truly the fruits of their mother’s labor and that we all must remember our mothers in our thoughts and prayers. By sharing her insightful concepts with her readers, Tina keeps the flames in her heart alive. Tina currently lives in Shiraz, Iran and has a TESOL degree with successful experience teaching general English to IT and high school students. She also worked as a manager of Reiki/Yoga in the United Arab Emirates.

Michael Bender, the U.S.-based editor who also wrote the Dedication and Introduction, said that Tina wanted to produce her inspirational book in English but was concerned about translating Persian sentiments about family into the context of a literal American framework in a way that readers would be inspired about the beauty of motherhood, life and the choices we all face as we proceed with our lives, no matter where we live in the world.

“Despite the physical separation of our lives, Michael not only captured the essence of my message, but clearly connected to my thoughts and philosophy as if they were his own,” Tina said. As a consequence, Tina asked Michael to write the Dedication and Introduction to her inspiring novel so his connection to the message was also conveyed to the reader.

Michael Bender is an American Language Skills Consultant working, since 2009, with First and Second Language English learners from grades one through adult in after school enrichment programs at Study Concepts Inc. (Ashburn and Chantilly, Virginia), Metropolitan Academy (McLean, Virginia), and individual American and foreign students and professionals. He recently joined the GIPEC Education Group based in Shanghai, China and Rockville, Maryland as Director of SAT Program for online and one-on-one test preparation. He has been a guest speaker at Virginia International University and the World Bank on topics relating to Culture and Language. He has traveled to more than 50 countries as an international executive, U.S. Foreign Service Commercial Officer, and on behalf of Project Hope, a non-profit organization which sought to establish a children’s hospital in a devastated part of the Middle East.

Michael has lived in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia. After turning to teaching and coaching, he created and published unique visual vocabulary writing and reading comprehension plans and visual flash cards to facilitate learning of English skills. Michael said that he is looking forward to an even closer collaboration with Tina on the sequel to “The Mystique of a Romance Between May and Me,” and working with writers from other parts of the world who have unique, story based inspirational messages.

National Scooter Day Helmet Giveaway by Micro Kickboard

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    May 16, 2016

On May 19th, Micro Kickboard invites schools, children, parents, and commuters alike to join them in a day of scooting in celebration of National Scooter Day, whether it’s riding to school instead of driving, commuting to work, or going for a quick cruise around the neighborhood to get some exercise. Micro embraces the ‘green’ lifestyle and encourages riders to scoot instead of drive, when the distances allow, to reduce our carbon footprint and keep the Earth green.

To celebrate this national holiday, the host, Micro Kickboard, is giving away 1000 of its Micro brand helmets. Micro Kickboard values the safety of scooter riders and says wearing helmets while scooting, especially for kids, is the most important scooter safety rule there is!

“The revolution is all about a new level of quality that enables scooters to be used for short commutes of up to a couple miles. The scooters are exceptionally smooth-gliding and comfortable to ride, and they fold up so they can be taken inside at your destination. And, they are more than twice as fast as walking and go places a bicycle can’t – sidewalks for example. A very convenient transportation option.”

    Geoff Hawksworth, Director

Micro says that National Scooter Day is a great day to celebrate the revolution that’s been taking place with scooters and kickboards being used as transport as well as fun, by adults and kids alike. Kids ride scooters to school and adults are riding Micro’s boards to the office from the train station. They recently introduced an electric hybrid scooter, the emicro one, that goes reaches speeds of up to 15 mph.

Micro Owners Geoff and Julie Hawksworth say “the revolution is all about a new level of quality that enables scooters to be used for short commutes of up to a couple miles.  The scooters are exceptionally smooth-gliding and comfortable to ride,  and they fold up so they can be taken inside at your destination. And, they are more than twice as fast as walking and go places a bicycle can’t – sidewalks for example. A very convenient transportation option.”

500 of the Micro helmets will be given away at the Great Big Play day to be held on May 22 in Los Angeles at Griffith Park, sponsored by So-Cal Moms. Micro will give away the children’s helmets to the first 500 people to visit their safety-zone section.

The other 500 helmets will be available at microkickboard.com on May 19th, while supplies last.

Financial Training Expert Tom Gentile Launches Global Distance Education Program for Survivors of Human Trafficking

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    May 14, 2016

This fall, Tom Gentile  – co-founder of Optionetics, founding editor of PowerProfitTrades, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on stock and options trading – will partner with Safe Port Initiative to combat the global slave trade by launching a distance education pilot program for 100 survivors of human trafficking in the United States, Mexico, Africa and the Middle East.

The Tom Gentile Distance Education Program, which combines the use of computer-generated avatars and video conferencing technology, is the newest project of Safe Port Initiative (SPI), a US-based human rights organization that provides advocacy and recovery services to survivors of human trafficking, displaced refugees, and victims of systematic persecution worldwide. To date SPI has conducted more than 60 rescue operations and awarded nearly three dozen college scholarships to survivors. According to SPI founder Christine Buckley, the new program will serve as the missing link in transitioning all victims, regardless of their geographic location or educational background, from merely surviving to thriving.

I’ve spent my career identifying high-probably, low-risk opportunities, and education is one of the best investments we can make to ensure a safer, more prosperous future for our children and our world.

    Tom Gentile, Co-founder, Optionetics

“We’re very proud of Safe Port’s college scholarship program and our amazing scholarship recipients, who consistently maintain a cumulative average GPA of 3.5,” says Buckley. “However, attending a traditional brick-and-mortar or online college is not always the most practical option for survivors. Many simply need help completing secondary school, improving their language skills, or honing their vocational skills. To address these needs, we’ve developed relationships with providers of more than 3,000 corporate meeting spaces to deliver customized, culture-specific, technology-driven curriculum virtually anywhere in the world without the need to build a school in every location. In this way, we’re able to provide life-transforming education to vulnerable, marginalized populations at a cost of just $10 per student per week.”

Through the generous sponsorship of Tom Gentile, 100 survivors on four continents will begin classes including secondary academic education, ESL, life skills training and adult vocational training in fall of 2016.

“I’ve spent my career identifying high-probably, low-risk opportunities,” says Gentile, “and education is one of the best investments we can make to ensure a safer, more prosperous future for our children and our world.”

Gentile is no stranger to distance education, having used that method to train hundreds of thousands of investors to navigate the complex world of futures and options. “For years, the financial services industry has used technology to help investors gain financial freedom,” Gentile explains. “I’m excited to partner with Safe Port Initiative to use that same technology to bring true and lasting freedom to survivors of human trafficking around the world.”

Librarian-led Correctional Facility Book Club and A Librarians on the Radio Podcast Take Home Two International Awards by American Library Association

    Press Release

    May 13, 2016

On May 4th, 2016, two librarians from Nanaimo, B.C., received notification from the American Library Association (ALA) that programs under their direction are recipients of the 2016 American Library Association (ALA) Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects.

The international award heralds from the largest Library Association in North America, which recognizes innovative contributions to international librarianship. The American Library Association awarded five projects in total. Two of those projects awarded belonged to librarians at the Nanaimo Harbourfront branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library.

“This recognition is a testament to the creative and out-of-the-box staff at Vancouver Island Regional Library who are busy doing incredible work in our communities. I am truly proud.”

Rosemary Bonanno, Executive Director, Vancouver Island Regional Library

The programs, Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Nanaimo Correctional Centre initiative, under the direction of Jennifer Seper, and the Vancouver Island Regional Library “Librarians on the Radio” co-hosted by Justin Unrau, Emily Orr and Patrick Siebold, received individual awards.

The 2016 American Library Association (ALA) Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects recognizes innovative contributions to international librarianship and is presented by the ALA President at the ALA Annual Conference in June, 2016 in Orlando Florida.

“This recognition is a testament to the creative and out-of-the-box staff at Vancouver Island Regional Library who are busy doing incredible work in our communities.” Says Rosemary Bonanno, Executive Director of Vancouver Island Regional Library. “I am truly proud.”

    About the Two Programs

The Vancouver Island Regional Library Correctional Centre program started in April of 2015, with a partnership between VIRL and the Nanaimo Correctional Centre. The project, initiated by Jennifer Seper, began with a simple plan to improve the existing library at the centre but then grew to include a book club and a pending agreement that will allow inmates to request specific materials directly from the library.

The Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) is a medium security prison that houses offenders from across the province. Under direction by Jennifer Seper, VIRL approached the centre with a partnership as a means of increasing access to materials and in effort to increase literacy levels in an otherwise marginalized area of the community. Statistics show that the vast majority of the incarcerated struggle with literacy and that those that increase their literacy rates while incarcerated have a lower recidivism rate, making literacyfocused programs essential

Book club discussion are a good match with the therapeutic values of the inmate program as it gives inmates the opportunity to learn how to discuss their feelings and opinions and to accept differing opinions from others in a no-confrontational way. Titles read so far include The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed (which all 9 members loved), and The Ocean at the End of the Lane which was universally loathed by all, but the facilitator. Feedback from the group and the prison wardens has been very positive. One inmate told Jennifer that “I asked my mom to guess what I was doing while I am away. She guessed a bunch of things and when I finally told her I was in a book club, she just could not believe it. She was so happy.”

Librarians on the Radio is an ongoing radio show and podcast hosted by Justin Unrau, Emily Orr, and Patrick Siebold, which partners Vancouver Island Regional Library with long running CHLY 101.7 radio show, Changes: The Show on Sustainability. The purpose of Librarians on the Radio is to discuss library and information issues in the wider Vancouver Island community. The show connects listeners to more than just their local branches: It showcases librarians with passions and interests and connects both library users and non-library users to the larger library world. Non-library users learn about issues librarians care about in their communities and hopefully find some connections and break some stereotypes. Library users learn about programs, events and tools some of which they never knew the library offered.

Librarians on the Radio goes beyond VIRL’s local service area to interview authors and librarians in the library world like Scott Bonner, the director of the Ferguson Public Library in Missouri; BC Civil Liberties Association expert Micheal Vonn on the 2015 Canadian federal election; and a Freedom to Read Week 2015 special with author Irvine Welsh. Making past episodes available as podcasts has increased the reach of the program beyond the community radio listener base.

The idea for the show was conceived by VIRL librarian Jason Kuffler in 2012 and was started with librarians Anthony Martin and Lara Wright in January of 2013. The show started out as a 15 minute segment but later moved to an hour once a month. In 2014, the current producer Justin Unrau joined the show and brought his radio journalism training in to modify the show’s approach. The biggest enhancement has been the creation of regular segments Beeps and Boops with co-host Emily Orr talking about information technology issues, and literary (/pulpy scifi) Bookfighting with Patrick Siebold. The team also offers Librarians Off the Radio which includes supplemental podcast content to the live radio show.

Tune into Librarians on the Radio at CHLY 101.7 FM or online at virl.bc.ca. Past episodes are available at http://virl.bc.ca/news/radio/archive.

DEAC 2016 Outstanding Graduate award winner Dusty Floyd earned her Master of Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine from ACHS in 2013, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Floyd holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Information Technology, and Spanish from Monmouth University. After watching many family members and friends struggle with severe health issues, Floyd was inspired to pursue an education in CAM.

“Many of my closest family members and friends, including my husband, mother, aunt, and dear friend were plagued with cancer,” Floyd says. “My own daughter, barely a year old at the time, faced severe medical challenges that I helped her overcome through proper nutrition. […] It was in this moment that I found ACHS. They were accredited, affordable, and approachable.”

Floyd now provides nutritional and fitness counseling at Premier Medicine and Wellness in Bordentown, New Jersey.

She chose the MS in CAM program to earn a quality education in the holistic health field so she could help as many people as possible struggling with debilitating health issues.

“The ACHS motto, ‘Learn well. Live Well. Educate Others.’ deeply resonated with me,” Floyd says. “I wanted to earn a quality education in the holistic health field so I could pay it forward and help as many people as possible with their own journeys toward health and wellness.”

“Dusty’s passion and dedication for helping others embodies the values we hold dear at ACHS,” says Dorene Petersen, ACHS president and founder. “She has helped many, many people overcome painful health issues through holistic and CAM modalities, and she is very deserving of this recognition.”

Infinix Global Meetings & Events participated in GMID by hosting students from Collin College’s International Meetings and Conventions class at their Plano corporate office.  The Infinix staff delivered an informative presentation to provide the students with a deeper understanding of the career paths available within the meetings industry.  Staff, including President Mike Roberts, represented various functions from sales, meeting planning, finance & business management.  Infinix has executed meetings in 35 countries and 5 continents over the past 25 years and brings a unique perspective to the global reach of our industry.

“What a wonderful opportunity to have students in my International Convention/Meeting Management class visit Infinix Global’s corporate office and learn from the team. The students gained valuable information and insight especially in dealing with the complexities of international meetings”

Linda Wee, Professor of Hospitality Management/Meetings & Events at Collin College

“What a wonderful opportunity to have students in my International Convention/Meeting Management class visit Infinix Global’s corporate office and learn from the team.  The students gained valuable information and insight especially in dealing with the complexities of international meetings,” said Linda Wee, Professor of Hospitality Management/Meetings & Events at Collin College

GMID marks the expansion of North American Meetings Industry Day (NAMID), held earlier this year in the United States, Canada, Mexico and parts of Latin America. NAMID included 88 events across the continent as well as robust conversations online and 3.2 million social media impressions. Proclamations of support were issued by the governor of Wisconsin and mayors of Toronto, Buffalo and Washington, DC. A NAMID billboard was featured all day in Times Square and Caesars Entertainment “Turned the Strip Blue” in Las Vegas with NAMID logos and signage. In Mexico, a collaboration agreement was signed between the federal government, the tourism board and all 11 Meetings Industry Associations.

Sunrise Hitek Prints Yearbooks for Schools of All Sizes

    [ad_1]

Sunrise Hitek offers fully custom yearbook printing https://www.sunrisehitek.com/product/books-and-catalogs. Their yearbook program is aimed at solving some of the common problems with school’s yearbooks – how to get top quality printing at an economical price on short-run jobs.

    Press Release

    Apr 28, 2016

Schools, especially small and private schools, face a common problem every year. While there are plenty of printing companies around, few are able to offer small quantity, high quality printing that at an economical price. The setup cost of an conventional offset printing press is just too much for small runs, and the cheap printers usually deliver inferior quality.

In recent years, in a measure to keep costs low, many schools have gone to digital printing to save money, but often have to settle for quality that’s barely “good enough”. As the saying goes, “good enough seldom is”. Parents and teachers alike are having second thoughts about the blurry photos, inconsistent colors, poor binding, and late deliveries on the yearbooks. Where can schools find a reliable source that offers the best image quality at a competitive price? What should a school look for in a printing company?

“Sunrise’s school yearbook program aims to solve the common challenge that faces every school…”for over 24 years, we always deliver the highest quality printing at the lowest cost, and with the best customer service in the industry.”

    Jimmy Sun, President, Sunrise Hitek

To achieve economy with small print runs, digital printing offers many advantages compared with conventional offset printing. However, not all digital printing is created equal. Important distinctions must be made when choosing the right technology, and the right company, to get the desired results.

Most of what’s so called “digital printing” in the market is actually done on color copiers, using dry toner and generally represent the low-end of the market. The resin used in fusing toner causes a unique sheen – the printed image doesn’t blend with the paper, either looks glossy on matte paper, or looks matte on glossy paper. Most people refer to this sheen as “the cheap color copier look”. Due to the toner’s large particle size, it’s not able to achieve the resolution required for the highest quality print jobs.

Only one digital printing technology uses true ink, and that’s the Indigo press from Hewlett-Packard. Since 1996, HP Indigo has led the way in producing the very best image quality on the market, in many cases even surpassing those produced on large Heidelberg presses. The Indigo’s ink blends nicely with the paper finish, giving it a consistent and professional look. Indigo’s ink particle are up to 10 times smaller than dry toner and and up to 5.5 times the resolution.

Chicago-based Sunrise Hitek has been providing high-quality printing service since 1988 https://www.sunrisehitek.com/product/books-and-catalogs. The company strives to produce the very best product in every market segment is serves, and it’s no different when it comes to digital printing. Sunrise Digital was one of the first companies in the US to invest in the Indigo printing technology. Today, the company runs two HP Indigo presses and specializes in book printing.

Another common complaint with color printing is the consistency of color – or the lack of it. Being a G7 Qualified Master Printer, Sunrise adheres to the highest standards in color accuracy and consistency. Presses are calibrated daily, sometimes multiple times a day, using digital spectrophotometers to ensure the most consistent colors. And because the company employs an all digital workflow, setup costs are minimal, lowering the cost for its clients.

Sunrise Hitek offers some of the most reasonable prices for school yearbooks. Schools can send finished yearbook designs by email or to the company’s FTP site. In addition to electronic PDF proofs, the company also includes hard copy proofs at no additional charge, a rarity in the print works. This gives the school an opportunity to preview the final product, ensuring complete customer satisfaction on every project. Sunrise also includes a satin UV coating on all yearbooks, which protects the ink from scuffing and scratching, and at the same time gives every project a high-end look.

“Sunrise’s school yearbook program aims to solve the common challenge that faces every school…” says Jimmy Sun, the company’s president, “for over 24 years, we always deliver the highest quality printing at the lowest cost, and with the best customer service in the industry.”

PS DANCE!, an inspirational film about dance education in New York City public schools, has been nominated for a New York Emmy in the Documentary category. The New York Emmy Awards will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

PS DANCE! showcases the profound effects of consistent and sequential dance education programs in five NYC public schools. It debuted on public television on THIRTEEN/WNET, WLIW21 and NJTV in May 2015 and has been broadcast on public television channels across the nation including stations in Denver, Tampa, Rochester, Miami, Boston, Albany, Orlando, Detroit, San Francisco, Phoenix, Cleveland, New York and New Jersey.

After the initial broadcast, the full film became available for online viewing at http://www.thirteen.org/programs/thirteen-specials/ps-dance. Hosted by veteran TV journalist Paula Zahn and filmed in the classrooms of five NYC public school full-time certified dance educators, this film reveals the impact that dance instruction has on students’ aesthetic, artistic and expressive development. While every child is born with the innate inclination to create, imagine and dance, PS DANCE! highlights how the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance, PreK-12, supports dance teachers in developing these qualities. The Blueprint, used by dance teachers citywide, frames this documentary created by Executive Producer Jody Gottfried Arnhold, Director and Producer Nel Shelby, and Dance Education Consultant Joan Finkelstein. The film was developed in collaboration with the NYC Department of Education Office of Arts and Special Projects.

The documentary captures a typical day in the classrooms of five extraordinary master dance educators: Catherine Gallant (Pre-K-5), Battery Park City’s P.S. 89; Ana Nery Fragoso (K-5), the current NYCDOE Director of Dance, P.S 315 in Midwood; Michael Kerr (6-8), Brooklyn’s New Voices School of Academic & Creative Arts; Patricia Dye (9-12), Science Skills Center High School for Science, Technology and the Creative Arts in Downtown Brooklyn; and Ani Udovicki (9-12), Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, in Long Island City.

After the film’s release, Arnhold, Shelby and Finkelstein launched an organization with the mission: Dance for Every Child. Dance education enthusiasts can submit their details at psdancenyc.com and join in advocating for more dance in schools. The movement will empower implementation of quality dance programs in schools across the nation.

PS DANCE! is available on DVD distributed by First Run Features and for rent or purchase on Vimeo. All proceeds from the sale of the film will go to The Fund for Public Schools for dance education programs in NYC Public Schools.

Armon, 7th Grade Spark student in North Lawndale

Since the launching of the Chicago program in 2011, Spark has served over 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students. Through dynamic apprenticeships, Chicago’s youth are exploring career fields including entrepreneurship, STEM, law, architecture, and more. These workplace experiences empower students to dream big and envision themselves working in some of the nation’s top industries and companies.

“I am working with my Spark mentor Jordan on a project to make Chicago a better city for all of us,” said Armon, Spark student from North Lawndale.  “I want to thank the City of Chicago for allowing Discovery Day to take place on Daley Plaza.  I hope a lot of people will visit my booth to hear my ideas for our city.”

What’s more, Spark students transition to high school at rates higher than their counterparts. Evidence shows that by combining project-based learning with engaging mentors in the workplace and a 21st century skill-building curriculum, Spark students enter high school engaged, on-track, and ready for success.

Announcing ParentSquare Translate: Communicate in Many Different Ways With Parents, Now in Over 100 Languages

    [ad_1]

To help teachers and parent leaders communicate with every parent in the classroom and school, ParentSquare launches language translation to over a hundred languages. Messages written in English will now be translated automatically and sent home in the language understood by parents, via email, text and app notifications.

    Press Release

    Mar 7, 2016

ParentSquare’s mission is to help schools communicate easily and effectively with parents.  Schools are encouraged to go beyond communication centered around logistics such as back to school night, early dismissals, forms and flyers that need to be completed, absences and late buses.  ParentSquare incorporates communication about everyday learning that happens in the classroom, on field trips, on the playground and after school.  Working with teachers across a diverse set of schools, ParentSquare learned that many hesitate to send messages home primarily because they are not effectively able to reach ELL families who do not speak English.  Although teachers understand the importance of communication, they do not want to leave any family behind.

To address the needs of ELL families, ParentSquare is happy to announce the addition of over one hundred languages to its intelligent content translation capabilities this month.  Now all stakeholders posting a message on ParentSquare can simply check a box to automatically include translated content.

ParentSquare is incredibly excited about providing multiple languages and what that represents: another step towards engaging every family and involving every parent.

    Anupama Vaid, President and Founder

    Here’s How it Works

A school can choose a default second language so that the majority of the second language population does not have to explicitly make that choice. Parents who desire a language different from English or the school’s default second language can select their own language from their accounts page. It’s that easy!! For schools that integrate with ParentSquare via their SIS, parent language setting is automatically picked from the SIS.

ParentSquare is incredibly excited about providing multiple languages and what that represents: another step towards engaging every family and involving every parent.

    Press Release

    Feb 18, 2016

ACCOMPANY is the latest classical music education app set to launch in May at accompanymusic.com. The app is the brainchild of violinist and writer Steven Maloney, a music teacher on a mission to share his love for both music and teaching, especially with the victims of war and poverty. The owner of Accompany Music and violinlessonschicago.com, Steven comments: “The idea of practicing along with recorded accompaniment certainly isn’t new, but my setup is innovative. Now the user can employ any mobile device or computer to access thousands of pieces for violin, voice, and other instruments. They choose a piece to work on, they adjust the tempo or repeat difficult sections using loops, and they learn to phrase musically and traditionally–all without any distortion in pitch or sound quality when changing speed.”

Part of Maloney’s zeal to create the ultimate mobile practice tool was his own experience growing up in a small, isolated Texas town.

“The idea of practicing along with recorded accompaniment certainly isn’t new, but my setup is innovative.

    Steven Maloney, Founder, Accompany Music

“Music instruction was frankly dismal and there were certainly no qualified accompanists to work with. You could mail order LP or CD recordings of karaoke-like background accompaniment tracks for a few things, but they were always too fast and you couldn’t adjust the tempo without changing the pitch or sound quality. It was like trying to learn to drive at 90 miles an hour. That was 25 years ago. Since then, digital changed everything and a few products have come out that semi-accurately slow down mp3 files, but the sound quality as a rule is not very good. Some of the newest apps even require “training” the app itself. Now theoretically, even if an app could actually follow–to the millisecond, like the most masterful human accompanist– (I’m talking about your every nuance and stylistic eccentricity warts and all), that might be useful for a very select population of extremely advanced and seasoned performers. For the remaining 99% – it’s best to learn to speed up and slow down in traditionally established places within the music the way a master musician like David Oistrakh or Pablo Casals or Maria Callas would. That requires listening to an accompaniment and following it; that itself takes discipline, not indulgence. In a nutshell: if you’re a kid or adult learning to play an instrument, you don’t need a toy; you need guidance and structure within a useful tool. That’s exactly what Accompany provides. Nothing in the app is automatic or metronomic, either; the piano sound is of the highest quality and sampled from a Steinway grand. The entire recording set up and app design was assisted by a former top-level Apple employee whom I consider a genius. In future we will have orchestral and ensemble accompaniments too. Finally, I’d also like to mention that unlike other apps where you’re paying a few dollars per piece, with Accompany, subscription is only a few pennies per day. Morever, for students in impoverished and war-torn nations, the app with all its content is absolutely free. For the moment, these countries with free service will include (among others) Colombia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Honduras, Syria, Haiti, Sudan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Bolivia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and North Korea.”

From a people perspective, such a concept is, as Bernie Sanders might pronounce, “Yuge“.

To date, ACCOMPANY features music for concertos, sonatas, short pieces, and student works. The product is unique in that it also features complete scale systems in different tunings. etudes, and drones for intonation practice – an idea inspired by noted virtuoso Ruggiero Ricci.
