ZERUEL (FFO: SUPERHEAVEN & SPLIT CHAIN) Release New Single, “Return By Dawn” – Metal Injection

Cinematic symphonic metalgaze artist Zeruel just released their new single, “Return By Dawn,” this past week, and the song lives up to the project’s description, and more. From Baltimore, Maryland, the project has been active since 2023 and released their first EP, Awakening, in 2024, blending shoegaze and ambient metal in one fell swoop.

For fans of Deafhaven, Superheaven, and all the damn ‘heavens,’ Zeruel‘s newest single creeps up on you. There’s a lingering eeriness at first that gently grows into more of a feeling of unsettledness as the instrumentals gently creep in from the background. At several points of the track, you’re deceived, half anticipating for that inevitable drop to happen. And for some, the drop in “Return By Dawn” might be a little too late – for others, it’ll be perfect. Incorporating some grungier elements into this song with its heavily reverberated guitars and whispering vocals, aspects that could also be attributed to the shoegaze genre, but are in such a tone to which chugs just a little harder than shoegaze normally allows for.

Zeruel‘s new track fits quite perfectly into the autumn season as the northern hemisphere grows colder and the nights grow longer, just the right of spooky and also… lonely. The song compels a sense of loneliness, but maybe that’s just the winter blues creeping in.
