Yuba County Sheriff’s Office disputes citations issued by Cal/OSHA

The citations come after a Marysville police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty in March 2025.

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office said Cal/OSHA has issued citations for a law enforcement action that the agency is calling “both unprecedented and unfounded.”

Cal/OSHA has open incidents with both the sheriff’s office and the Marysville Police Department, according to an online database.

The citations come after Marysville police officer Osmar Rodarte was shot and killed while serving a warrant in March 2025. It was the department’s first line-of-duty death in more than a century.

The sheriff’s office responded to citations issued by Cal/OSHA, strongly disputing the regulatory action. In a statement, the agency warned other law enforcement agencies about what it characterized as governmental overreach.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement:

“The issuance of these citations by Cal OSHA for a law enforcement action are both unprecedented and unfounded. The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office prides itself on meeting and exceeding industry standards in training and protective equipment for our personnel. These standards are set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) as well as long-established policy, procedures and guidelines for law enforcement action.

Following this tragic incident, many very experienced, highly trained law enforcement investigators spent countless hours looking into all facets of the incident, including tactics, equipment, planning and training.

California law enforcement agencies should take notice of this case as it sets a dangerous precedent for unfocused oversight by a state entity that has little to no knowledge in regard to public safety and law enforcement. This regulatory overreach by the state of California not only diminishes the heroic actions of our peace officers but also diverts responsibility from the murderer whose actions resulted in this tragedy.”

The specific details of the citations have not been disclosed.

ABC10 has reached out to the Marysville Police Department for comment.
