CLEVELAND (WJW) – Thousands upon thousands of eager WWE fan descended upon Cleveland for an action-packed weekend featuring Friday Night SmackDown and the second biggest calendar event – SummerSlam.
“The stadium is going to be packed full of WWE fans,” WWE Superstar Gunther said Friday. “And we have a stacked card and I think everybody is in for a treat.”
Gunther, Rhea Ripley and local hero Johnny Gargano met with the media Friday morning ahead of SmackDown at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
“SummerSlam 1996 was the first show I ever went to at the Gund Arena,” Gargano said. “It made me want to become a professional wrestler, and here we are 28 years later and I’m walking into SummerSlam weekend one-half of the tag team champions. This is living proof right here. I’m just a kid from Cleveland.”
Logan Paul and Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin are two more WWE superstars from Northeast Ohio who will be featured on home soil.
Over in North Olmsted, WWE superstars the Street Profits, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins met with fans in the parking lot of Giant Eagle.
“It’s exciting to see a lot of stuff going on right here in Cleveland,” Parma parent Kenneth Robinson said.
His son, Gio Robinson, is a huge wrestling fan and was meeting a couple of his heroes for the first time. He hopes to become a wrestler himself one day, and he’s already training.
“I do pushups, I do jumping-jacks, sit-ups, mountain climbers, chest stretches and get my abs right,” Gio said.
Seeing the Street Profits shows him that he can be just like them, and they even signed his belt.
“These are memories you don’t want to miss,” Kenneth said.
WWE SummerSlam is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Tickets are still available online.
The Undertaker is also hosting his 1 Deadman show at The Agora at 10 a.m. Saturday.
