WWE SummerSlam reaches fever pitch in Cleveland

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Professional wrestling fans in Cleveland are boiling over with excitement for WWE SummerSlam.

“This is my first paper view, I am excited,” Cleveland resident and WWE fan Ronald Balfour said. “I am so excited. All my favorite wrestlers are going to be here. I’m a huge wrestling fan, and I live in Cleveland, I had to be here, man.”

Lines to get into Cleveland Browns Stadium were very long when gates opened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, but fans say it’s been a fun-filled week, with little to no issues.

“I went to SummerSlam last year in Detroit as well, and it was the same type of environment,” WWE Fan and Dayton resident Steven Newberry said. “It was a great time. Everybody is so nice. Wrestling fans are the best people to be around.”

Lots of young fans could be spotted wearing their favorite wrestler’s gear, like WWE Legend John Cena. The new WWE superstars also have the young fan’s hearts.

“It’s awesome, especially it’s fun to see it through the eyes of him because he thinks he’s a walking Jey Uso,” Canton Mom Kelly Szink said of her son Campbell.

The fans are looking forward to the main events featuring Cody Rhodes and Solo Sikoa. They’re also hopeful to see the return of WWE Legends.

“I hear that Brock Lesnar is coming back, and Roman Reigns,” Olmsted Township WWE Fan Dan Wendt said.

Parma native Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin hosted the event in Cleveland Browns Stadium, and Westlake’s own Logan Paul lost the US Championship to LA Knight in a dazzling showdown packed with high-flying moves. Paul walked to the ring with Cleveland music Superstar MGK, wearing custom ring attire matching the Orange and Brown of the Dawg Pound.

The city of Cleveland hasn’t hosted SummerSlam since 1996, so fans are overjoyed to see the second-largest WWE event in the Forest City. Seeing how successful it can be, they’re hoping for more.

“WrestleMania needs to come to Cleveland,” Wendt said. “If WrestleMania comes to Cleveland, that would be the biggest thing ever.”
