WPUSD votes to take legal action over new homeless facility in Placer County

(FOX40.COM) — The Western Placer Unified School District made a unanimous decision Tuesday to take legal action over a new homeless facility coming to town.
On Aug. 13, The Gathering Inn purchased a building at 1660 3rd Street in Lincoln. To the surprise of city government officials, the organization had plans to use the property for a 50-bed facility and 60-bed medical respite for individuals experiencing homelessness. The City was informed the day after the sale was finalized because The Gathering Inn said the seller’s terms required them to keep their plans confidential until the sale closed.
At Tuesday’s board meeting, in closed session, the WPUSD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to pursue legal action against The Gathering Inn and the California Department of Social Services.
“The Board has significant concerns regarding the potential health and safety impacts on students related to the location of these facilities and the lack of community engagement related to this Project,” WPUSD said in a statement.
The facility is located near several schools in Lincoln such as Glen Edwards Middle School, First Street Elementary School, Creekside Oaks Elementary School and Lincoln High School.
Board President Jason Price added that the board recognizes the need for resources, compassion, and support for the unhoused individuals in the region. He said the district’s decision to pursue legal action “does not correlate to a lack of care or understanding, but rather a commitment to upholding transparency while ensuring the safety and well-being of our school communities.”
