New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday this year, and that usually means a few changes to how Fort Worth handles curbside collections.

The city has released its holiday schedule along with reminders about extra bags, missed pickups and where residents can take overflow trash.

With so many people traveling or cleaning up after holiday gatherings, knowing your pickup plan can help you avoid a surprise at the curb.

Here’s what to know about how trash collection will run during New Year’s week.

Will my trash pickup change for New Year’s Day?

Yes, but only for some routes. Fort Worth won’t collect residential trash, recycling, yard waste, or bulk waste on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

If Thursday’s your usual day, your pickup will move to Friday. Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday routes won’t change. All routes return to normal on Monday, Jan. 5.

What if I have extra trash after the holiday?

You can set out two extra bags of trash for free on your pickup the first pickup day after New Year’s.

The city says the bags should be placed next to your brown cart and can’t be larger than a standard 32 gallon kitchen bag.

If you’ve got more than that, there are a few other options. Bulk waste, recycling, yard waste, and additional trash can be taken to any of Fort Worth’s four Drop Off Stations.

Sites will be closed on New Year’s Day but will reopen Jan. 2.

You can also buy Pay Bags, which cost $15 plus tax for a bundle of five. They’re mailed to you and added to your water bill. To order, call 817-392-1234.

What if my trash isn’t picked up?

Extra bags are collected by a separate truck, so they may be picked up at a different time than your cart.

The city asks residents to give crews time before reporting a missed pickup.

Carts should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day and can go out after 6 p.m. the night before. They should be pulled back in by midnight after pickup.

If a full day passes and your trash still hasn’t been collected, you can report it within 24 hours of your pickup day.

Missed pickups can be reported through the MyFW app, by dialing 311, or by calling 817 392 1234.
