We get asked one question more frequently than almost anything else:
“Why is it called Stitch?”
Why did we choose Stitch as the name for a community built around the idea of forming social connections for people over 50?
After answering the question what feels like a thousand times since Stitch began, I realized I needed to write it down so members could get the question answered without needing to ask me in person.
That’s what I’ve finally done, and is what this article is all about.

We chose the name “Stitch” for a couple of reasons.
The first is one members usually figure out themselves.
We’re stitching people together.
In a world where our social circles are constantly under pressure to shrink as we age, it’s vitally important for us to find ways to build new social connections to replace the ones we have lost.
We created Stitch to be a community that helps build those social connections and stitch people together.
But there is a bigger, much more ambitious reason we chose the name.
More than simply helping individual members form social connections, our goal is to stitch the fabric of society back together.
Seriously!
If you’re not a member of the community yet, you might think that sounds a little grandiose.
But if you have experienced what being part of the Stitch Community is like, you’ll know that the foundation of everything we do on Stitch is devoted to nurturing and growing many of the things that have been lost in broader society over the last few decades: being kind, being welcoming to others, being friendly, being helpful, and doing your part to enrich the lives of other people.
These aren’t just vague goals, either: the Stitch Community Guidelines embed these behaviors and values into how the entire community operates.
Ever since the rise of the Internet and social media, many of the communities and organizations that used to play these roles in society have been lost. And there is overwhelming evidence that the algorithms that the big tech companies use to maximize profits are more likely to create loneliness, isolation, alienation, and social disharmony than any sense of belonging and community.
But just because the big tech companies have used technology to create negative outcomes, it doesn’t need to be that way.
I’ve you’ve been a member of an active Stitch community even for a little while, you’ll know there is a fundamental difference between how members behave in Stitch compared to what happens on any other site on the Internet.
We are creating a community where everyone looks after each other; where it’s not the loudest voice in the room that gets the most attention; where kindness and a sense of community wins.
Now, we’re not saying we’ve achieved our goal yet.
Far from it: we’re only just getting started.
But the name “Stitch” is there to let you know where we think the destination is, and we won’t stop until we get there.
